The City

Coventry is a historic city dating back to Saxon and Roman settlements as well as developing significantly during medieval times, and has a proud history in weaving, watchmaking, cycle manufacture and the automotive and engineering industries.

Following devastating bombing during World War II, the city became a symbol of hope and regeneration and was the first city to ‘twin’ with another city in the world: the city is now twinned with 27 other towns and cities internationally.

 


 

This also paved the way for the city to become a centre for peace and reconciliation and at its heart is the modern Cathedral designed by Sir Basil Spence, right next to the University campus.

Coventry also plays its part on the national and international stage; We hosted international football matches at the Ricoh Arena as part of the 2012 Olympic games, while artists and performers created an incredible 6 metre cycle-powered Lady Godiva puppet which travelled to London to take part in the opening ceremony.

The city also has a diverse range of activities to enjoy, including major concerts, ice hockey and football matches and theatre productions, in addittion to some interesting local attractions.

Conveniently situated in the centre of Coventry, the University enjoys excellent public transport links and close proximity to major road networks – London is just over one hour by train and the city is easily connected to the surrounding countryside of Warwickshire. Easy commuting to Coventry means that you will have a wide choice of areas to consider living if you need to relocate to join our team – there is the city itself with many multicultural suburbs, thriving towns and villages located in beautiful nearby countryside.

– How did Tottenham come into your life?

– A year ago, you talked about your desire to expand the group’s representation by acquiring clubs in Brazil and Senegal. Is there any progress?

– We have been working in Senegal since last year in partnership with the Tyunget club.In Brazil, we held several weeks of negotiations last February, but quarantine prevented, so we decided to postpone it until 2021. We are actively moving in this direction. – Here you need to understand that football is still in the process of formation, there are not so many real professional groups, plus different price categories and markets where we work. Our long-term goal is to grow players within the group, and not buy for big money, this is the main idea of ​​our event. I am convinced that football in general is underestimated.

– In what sense?

– Compared to American sports, football clubs are priced below real value. Clubs in the United States tend to have a more local history, they don’t have the same global coverage. The Dallas Cowboys (a Texas club from American football) are more expensive than Chelsea. It should not be! I think 99% of the world’s population has not heard what Dallas is …

– Take Tottenham: according to rough media estimates, its cost is about 2 billion, but how can this be, if only the cost of building a stadium is about 1 billion, a training base – 200 million, a squad – 500-600 million, guaranteed payments from TV in the Premier League – about 200 million? In general, the situation is changing, any normal sports club positions itself as an entertainment business, and this is a completely different assessment and potential. Therefore, American investors are actively buying clubs, they understand that the situation will change in the assessment of the club as a business in the direction of growth.

– Almost every football group has a main club: City, Leipzig. Which club can become the main one in yours? Will he be in Russia? Or England?

– We are thinking about it.It’s hard in Russia because of the limit on foreign players; in Cyprus, for example, we can play 11 foreigners. In fact, there are not many countries in the world where this is possible, although in Europe it is easier.

England, after leaving the European Union, does not seem to be the best option at all: the requirements for a work visa and movement make the process of working with young players difficult. Naturally, we want to have another team at a higher level of competition, but for now we need to put things in order in what we have.

– Is the variant with Spain, Italy, France possible? Are you considering the big league markets or are they not a priority?

– France and Italy – unlikely: a difficult market, difficult adaptation, a different philosophy of football, difficult tax nuances.Spain and Belgium are more interesting: the limit on legionnaires is softer, the immigration policy is simpler, but for now, I repeat, we need to figure out what we have and build all the processes as efficiently as possible within the system.

Taking into account the fact that Belgium and the Netherlands are going to hold a common championship, then, accordingly, this championship will be more interesting.

By the way, now there is a conversation that Cyprus, Greece and Israel will create a common league, and this would be a big breakthrough for the region, with a completely different level of income from the sale of TV rights.

– According to Transfermarkt, teams in your group make almost no exit transfers. Typically, this is a story about the quitting of free agents. Does the model need time to work at full strength?

– This is incorrect information. About 10 players were sold for money: Jander to Crvena Zvezda, Kuls to Eupen, Zachariu to Olympiacos, Mall to Apollo, Pedrinho to Portugal, Lulinha to Japan. Basically, these are transactions up to 300 thousand euros. Considering that we took players on the free market, these are good indicators.

The next window will be more productive, we have offers for 5-6 players. Finnish national team player Valakari has the highest offer in the history of Cyprus. – I think that Rodina is the first club in PFL history to train in the UAE.Is this the correct story in terms of economics for the PFL club?

– From a preparation point of view, this is a fairly correct move. The difference in cost between Turkey and the UAE is not catastrophic, given that we did not come with one team (there was also “Riga” there), but the conditions and infrastructure of a completely different level. Plus, the Emirates is perhaps the only country where it was possible to fully train without looking back at the coronavirus.

You asked about competitive advantages – how we try to convince the guys.This is just about that. Working conditions, infrastructure, holidays, human relations are excellent competitive advantages. Let me remind you that the base in Cyprus is used by Rodina for almost 3 months a year, and no club or academy in Russia has such conditions for growth.

By the way, one of the results of our training in Dubai is that 5 Rodina players will spend the next season on loan in the Emirates Championship team. It may not be the top division, but it is both an opportunity for us to strengthen our marketing potential and an incentive for the guys to compete for a place in Rodina.

– In your interview with The Athletic, you predicted that the government funding model in Russia will collapse in the next 10-15 years. What is it based on?

– On how the whole world lives and how realities are changing. No matter what we say, the main processes are smoothly changing in Russia. Ten years ago, no one would have understood what this was all about: TV rights, income on match days, business around the stadium, the academy … Now everyone understands that changes are needed, that clubs and the league need to live differently.Of course, we will not give up government funding at all, but it seems to me that it will decrease.

Already now there are clubs in the PFL and FNL with private capital, simpler models of monetization are emerging, the world is becoming more global. I personally think that one should invest in the league, as does La Liga or the Premier League: big TV rights and big prize money create competition and growth prospects. It is also an excellent investment environment.

– Can you decipher? What does it mean to invest in a league?

– If you make a prize fund of at least $ 300-400 million in the RPL and distribute money depending on the result (conditionally 70, 60, 50 – for the first places and 15-20 for the last one), then there will be a line of people who want to invest in football.

Money for the fund can be raised at the expense of the same state-owned companies that today are voluntarily-forced to subsidize clubs: Gazprom, Lukoil, VTB, VEB, Rosneft, Sberbank, and so on + some regional payments. They will sponsor the league or become its shareholders with transparent management, accountability and governance. Then there will be less corruption, and the level of management in the competition will become clear.

Then you can make tax holidays or big breaks for the league and clubs for 5-10 years.I am sure that 100 million can be earned on TV rights (even if in Cyprus, where the population is 800 thousand, TV rights cost 30 million euros a year). Everyone gets used to paying for content.

– There is a persistent opinion that if tomorrow the state is prohibited from giving money for professional sports, it will collapse. Do you agree with him?

– It will not collapse, but is transformed. Someone will disappear from the map, someone will become more modest, and someone, on the contrary, uses the situation as an opportunity. On the whole, it is obvious that the current state of affairs is not the most correct one. It seems to me that some steps should be taken to reduce the influence and dependence on public money.For example, only investments and subsidies in academia, infrastructure and logistics could be allowed. At the same time, it is forbidden to finance players’ salaries by more than a certain percentage. It is not necessary to go to extremes and completely prohibit government funding of football; this can be done gradually or the form of this funding can be changed.

– Another cliche: private business is not interested in developing football in Russia. There will not be enough volunteers or resources.

– There are not many incentives to invest at the moment.The rules for using state objects are incomprehensible and inconvenient, there are no financial indulgences and motivation. Take the same Brazil: any company can give a part of this amount to a professional club instead of paying quarterly VAT. In many countries, local and city taxes can be paid directly to the club. The state sees benefits in the development of professional football and gives benefits to those who invest in it.

– Do I understand correctly that in our region only Shakhtar is working for profit? All the rest are a hobby for wealthy private owners or a social mission of the state, behind which, as a rule, ineffective use of the budget is hidden.

– In fact, there are many profit-making clubs in Eastern Europe, where the owners are fundamentally underreported. It all depends on the model and business. Take the same Bulgarian “Ludogorets” – a constantly profitable club with an understandable business model, with the sale of players and money from European cups. Trencin, Ferencvaros, Midtjylland. There are many examples, so everything is more than real.

– Your quote from an old Sports.ru interview: “The English Championship, League 1 and League 2 have signed a financial Fair Play agreement – clubs cannot have losses in excess of £ 2 million a year.If the loss is greater – sanctions. ” Considering how the Premier League has grown since then, is this a good copyright initiative?
