10 Largest Ice Cream Companies In The United States – Zippia

The United States Ice Cream industry surged in 2020, with total sales reaching $6.97 billion, representing an increase of 13.4% over the previous year.

Much of this growth was due to increased demand for pre-packaged bulk ice cream products.

Many experts expect the ice cream industry to continue growing rapidly over the next decade, albeit at a lower rate than 2020. The current consensus seems to be a CAGR of 3.01% from 2021 through 2026.

This article will discuss the ten largest ice cream companies in the United States by annual revenue to provide greater insight into the industry.

We’ll briefly cover each company’s history, as well as examine their flagship products and production capabilities.

  • Private label.
    2020 Annual Revenue: $1.304 billion

The United States ice cream market is dominated by small private labels that sell their ice cream locally. Private label sales in 2020 alone amounted to 392 million units, more than double that of the top solo brand, Ben & Jerry’s.

Although not an actual company, we included this at the top of the list as it demonstrates a key aspect of the ice cream industry. Research and industry experts have all found that consumers value ice cream brands that they perceive to be local and homegrown.

As you’ll soon see, most of the largest solo ice cream brands try to adopt this same image in their advertising and branding efforts.

  • Ben & Jerry’s. Burlington, Vermont
    2020 Annual Revenue: $863.1 million

Ben & Jerry’s operates production facilities in three states, as well as the Netherlands and Israel. The company is well-known for its wide selection of 54 different flavors, with its best-selling variant being cookie dough.

Much of their early success has been attributed to this wide selection of flavors that customers could choose from, which was not common in the ice cream industry.

Ben & Jerry’s has also received a great deal of both criticism and praise for their various statements over the years on U.S politics. The company frequently engages in social activism, and its founders have stated such activities as part of the organization’s core values.

Blue Bell employs 2,800 workers across its three American-based production facilities. These facilities collectively produce over 100 pints each minute during operating hours.

Haagen Dazs markets itself as a premium brand. It sells many traditional ice cream flavors such as vanilla and chocolate and unique ones such as Bananas Foster and Vanilla Swiss Almond.

The list of names of ice cream brands resembles a geographical map: in each country they adhere to certain secrets and traditions of production, the symbol of which becomes a unique name.

    Italy

Italy is considered the birthplace of the classic creamy dessert, and Italian ice cream is the benchmark for many world producers.Cornetto, founded in 1959 in Naples, is one of the most recognizable Italian ice cream companies. Translated from Italian, the name means “little horn”, which indicates the shape of the dessert – a cone.

    France

Since 1954, the Berthillon family ice cream business has flourished in Paris, named after its founder, Raymond Berthillon. This name has been a symbol of delicious ice cream made from natural ingredients for many years.

French Carte D’or was established in 1977 as a supplier of ice cream for cafes and restaurants. From the very beginning, the brand positioned itself as the best dessert in European restaurants, distinguished by an exquisite combination of flavors, as indicated by the name itself – “golden card”.

    Belgium

Glacio is a brand originally from Belgium, founded in 1972 in the city of Beers. A distinctive feature of the company was that the assortment, in addition to standard sundaes and sorbets, included so-called “ice desserts” – real works of culinary art. This is also evidenced by the name of the brand: in Latin, Glacio means “I am made of ice”.

The Belgian ice cream company known outside the country – Magnum was founded in 1989. Initially, the product was produced in the form of popsicle, then – cones and sandwich briquettes. The name translated from Latin means “big”: the weight of the original dessert was 86 grams.

    Switzerland

The Swiss brand Movenpick was founded in 1948 in Zurich by the hotelier Ueli Prager, and in 1968 the first ice cream was released under the trademark.Today the assortment includes various types of delicacies: sorbet, classic ice cream in a bucket, ice cream. The name of the brand contains its philosophy, although it was born completely by accident. Once Prager was walking along the embankment and feeding the seagulls, the man drew attention to the fact that the seagulls very selectively choose their treats. It was this scene that gave birth to the name Movenpick (move from German “seagull”, pick from English – “choose”), turning into the concept of the brand – to choose only the best and natural ingredients for ice cream.

    Finland

The Finnish brand Valio is the largest lactose-free ice cream brand. The company was founded in 1905 as an exporter of Finnish butter, and the Finnish word Valio was chosen for the name, meaning “selected, elite” – this is the kind of product the company produces.

    Turkey

Trying Turkish ice cream is a must on the program of guests of the country. An original and incredibly tasty version of a classic dessert with many fillings is presented by Mado ice cream. The brand originated back in 1850 in the city of Kahramanmaras: it all started with a small shop opened by Yashar Kanbur. The name Mado is an abbreviation made up of two Turkish words – Maras (the old name of the city of Kahramanmaras) and Dondurma (as ice cream is called in Turkey).

    Sri Lanka

Ice cream from Sri Lanka is represented by the brand with the original name Elephant House – “elephant house”. At first glance, this choice seems strange, but in fact there is nothing surprising in this: the elephant in Sri Lanka is considered a sacred and revered animal.

    India

India’s largest ice cream maker, the Amul brand, was created in 1946 by Tribhuvandas Patel. Amul is not a word from the Indian language, but just an abbreviation for a dairy company (Amul – Anand Milk Union Limited, Milk Anand LLC, Anand is an administrative district of the Indian state of Gujarat).

In 1975, in the Indian city of Mangalore, the production of ice cream with the pretentious name – Ideal Ice cream (“ideal ice cream”) was launched. The name really brought success to the product – today it is one of the most famous Indian brands. In general, in India, the “speaking” names of ice cream companies are often used: Mother Dairy, Natural Ice Cream.

    Canada

Canadian products from Cows Creamery are included in the list of the best ice cream not only in the producing country, but also in the world. The production, founded in 1983 in Cavendish, received a very telling name – “cow cream”, in honor of the main ingredient of the delicacy.

    USA

America is home to many world-famous ice cream companies. One of them – Rocky Road was founded in 1929 in the California city of Oakland by Joseph Edie and William Dreyer. After creating the chocolate chip dessert, the partners named their venture Rocky Road. In English, the phrase means “rocky path”: it is a symbol of the difficult path of people living during the “big depression” and at the same time personifies delicious chocolate chips.

The Blue Bell Creameries ice cream company (literally from English – “Blue Bell Dairy Store”), opened in 1907, was named after the Texas Bluebell bell flower of the same name. Blue Bell symbolized summer – the season of the bell blossom, and hot season for the owners of the ice cream business.

Many lovers of the American frozen dessert Dramstick wonder why the ice cream is made by a company whose name means a completely different product.Dramstick (translated from English – “chicken leg” or “drumstick”) was founded in 1928, but the history of the name began much earlier. At an ice cream exhibition in 1904, one of the participants used a rolled waffle as a dish for his product, later, in 1928, the Parker brothers supplemented this invention with chocolate and nut crumbs, and the wife of one of the brothers noticed that such a delicacy outwardly resembles a chicken leg. The comparison was so accurate that the extraordinary name under which the product is still produced was left.

Another brand has an interesting history of creation – the famous Haagen Dazs. Its founder was the Pole Ruben Matus, who immigrated to the United States and started selling ice cream there. In 1961, Matus decided to take a risky step – in the face of fierce competition, he makes an attempt to break into the luxuru segment. To do this, he chooses only high-quality ingredients and comes up with a new name for his product – Haagen Dazs, presenting it as Danish. For persuasiveness, a map of the country flaunted on the label. The entrepreneur rightly judged that the dessert, originally from Denmark, would find loyal buyers among Americans, moreover, this country was famous for its dairy products. But the name had only an indirect relation to the Danish language: it does not contain a combination of the letters zs and the letter a with dots at the top. Matus wanted to come up with an original and unique name with a “Danish” sound, and just came up with an untranslatable phrase that he liked. The calculation of the creator was fully justified – the “Danish” name brought the brand love and popularity not only in America, but also in many parts of the world.

Often in the US, ice cream trading companies are named after their founders. Thus, the legendary Baskin Robbins ice cream parlor chain, opened in 1945 in Glendale, was named after entrepreneurs Burton Baskin and Irwin Robbins, who joined forces to create a joint business. Similarly, the names of firms Abbott’s Frozen Custard (translated from English – “Abbott’s frozen cream”) were formed – in honor of Arthur Abbott, Ben & Jerry’s – Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, Carvel – Tom Carvel, Breyers – William Breuer, Herrell’s Ice Cream (” ice cream from Herrell “) – Steve Herrell.

    Russia

The list of ice cream brands in Russia is quite impressive – a delicious delicacy here is one of the most common desserts.

The history of one of the most famous Russian companies began in 1992 in Novosibirsk, when two entrepreneurs – Pavel Shutov and Vadim Lyubimtsev decided to organize the sale of ice cream from street stalls. At that time, there was a shortage of this product in Russia, so street sales quickly grew into a large business. In 1993 the Inmarko trade mark was registered. The exact origin of the word is unknown, at that time it was fashionable in the country to give products names with foreign sounds, and the founders themselves said that this word was born by chance, during one of the feasts. After a while, the name began to be deciphered as “Investment Marketing Company”.

No less popular is the brand of ice cream in a bucket – Ekzo, released in 2006 by Inmarko. It was a completely new product with amazing and unusual combinations of fruits and berries, as the name spoke of – the abbreviated word “Exotic”.It is noteworthy that for a more vivid effect, the first letter of the name is written in Cyrillic, and the rest – in Latin. In 2008 Ekzo for the first time produces a convenient “home” ice cream format – in a bucket.

In 1996, a new brand appeared on the Russian market with an interesting name of 48 kopecks. While the younger generation thinks what this may mean, the older generation is nostalgic for the old days – after all, it was 48 kopecks that an incredibly tasty large ice cream cost in the USSR when they were children. The slogan of the company is also in tune – “ice cream loved from childhood”. For the same reason, another brand from the Iceberry company is called “Leningrad Ice Cream” – as an association with the most delicious ice cream once produced in the USSR.

The relatively young Russian ice cream brand Chistaya Liniya was founded in 2001. The name corresponds to the main idea of the company – the production of products only from natural and environmentally friendly components – cream, milk, honey, chocolate.

There are ice cream brands in Russia that have names associated with home, family values: “Family”, “Talosto”.Talosto is an ice cream and convenience food company founded in 1992 in St. Petersburg with the participation of Finnish investors. The name comes from the Finnish language and in translation means “hearth”.

The names of ice cream brands all over the world are as diverse and original as the tastes of the dessert, the methods of its preparation and serving. You can experiment endlessly, trying new products from the most famous and famous brands.

The largest ice cream producers have started a “cold war”

Khladokombinat No. 1, one of the leaders in the production of ice cream in St. Petersburg, intends to sue its Karelian competitor, the Kholod Slavmo company. The reason was the use of the last popular brand “Sugar Tube”, which accounts for about a third of the production volume of Khladokombinat No. 1.

Khladokombinat # 1 recently circulated an appeal to its partners, in which it announced its intention to sue the company “Kholod Slavmo”. The reason was the launch of an ice cream brand on the market by a Petrozavodsk manufacturer, which is similar to the degree of mixing with one of the main brands of Khladokombinat No. 1.

“There was a similar violation on the part of Kholod Slavmo in 2003,” says Dinara Gaifulina, head of the marketing department at Khladokombinat No. 1.- Then their product was already withdrawn from the trade, despite the fact that it was just like ours. Now they have released an almost complete copy of the design. At the same time, they actively offer their “straw” to retail at a lower price. ”According to Ms. Gaifulina, the“ Sugar tube ”, which has been produced by Khladokombinat No. 1 since 1986, accounts for about a third of the company’s turnover. a claim for copyright infringement, objections to the grant of a patent for an industrial design No. 56754 to the Chamber for Patent Disputes of Rospatent, as well as a statement to the FAS about unfair competition. The amount of damage is still being calculated, says Dinara Gaifulina. However, according to her, the company intends to achieve the cancellation of production. It was not possible to get a comment from “Holoda Slavmo” yesterday.

“Most likely, the violating company deliberately took such a step, and the goals could be very different,” says Alexander Elizarov, general director of the Mir advertising agency. the company did not defend its brand in the segment of spirits, and as a result received compensation for refusing to produce it.Perhaps, in this way, Kholoda Slavmo will be able to find some weak link in its competitor. ” Trust. CJSC “Holod Slavmo” was founded in 2000 in Petrozavodsk, a subsidiary of the dairy plant “Slavmo”, and is one of the twenty largest ice cream producers in Russia

Meanwhile, this scandal among ice cream makers is not the first. So, recently, ice cream producers complained to the Prosecutor General’s Office and the Federal Antimonopoly Service about the Milk Union. The reason for the indignation of Russian ice cream makers was the speech of the head of the Dairy Union, Vladimir Labinov, on Channel One, where he urged consumers not to buy ice cream with vegetable fats. The Union of Ice Cream Manufacturers of Russia (CMP) considered that such a statement could undermine the entire ice cream market, in which products with vegetable fats account for 65%, and asked Prosecutor General Yuri Chaika and FAS head Igor Artemyev to sort out the situation.

90,000 Owner of the leading enterprise in the production of ice cream in Ukraine: Petr Rud about the benefits of ice cream, longing for an ice cream and a 14-ton cone

    Marina Smagina

    executive editor of “Rubric”, writer

On the first day of spring, the perfect time to be inspired again and set your sights on great things, Rubric begins a series of stories about people whose experience motivates them to achieve more. “Business people” are representatives of different professions and their histories, in which they will share the secrets of their crafts with the readers of “Rubric”. And first we decided to visit Zhytomyr to the main ice cream producer in Ukraine – Peter Rudy, the founder of the Rud company. At his factory in Zhytomyr, more than 150 types of ice cream are produced, and not only for Ukraine – this ice cream is exported to almost 30 other countries. If you imagine the work of the head of an ice cream company as a constant holiday – ice cream for breakfast, lunch and dinner, then you are mistaken only that the whole day is also loaded with tasks and work meetings.

For Petro Rud, it seems, it has always been like this – having headed the Zhytomyr creamery after graduating from the Ukrainian Agricultural Academy, the entrepreneur received it without his own raw material base and without constant suppliers. And even when the question of suppliers was resolved, another problem arose: whole milk in Ukraine was always considered a social product, the trade margin for which could not exceed 10%. This margin did not pay off the cost of collecting and storing milk in the least. This prompted the company to look for a more marginal product. Therefore, the attention of the businessman was attracted by the ice cream market, which was only gaining momentum in Ukraine at that time. However, we all come from childhood, and our love for ice cream is also. Petr Rud is no exception here.

    – How did your “ice cream” path begin?

    – Since childhood, I really love ice cream. I constantly remember the ice cream of those times. Such an assortment of ice cream and sweets, which is now on sale, could not even be imagined then. I remember that the guys and I stood in line, watching the seller lay out such an expected delicacy from the can into the glasses.Everyone was waiting for their turn. And then the real pleasure began …

    – Remember the moment when you first tasted ice cream? Did you like it right away?

    – As a child, I had a dream to eat ice cream to the bone. I remember how my older brother bought us ice cream with the first money he earned during the summer holidays. My record was 7 packs of ice cream. I remember these sensations and my soul becomes warmer. Such happy moments are never forgotten.

    – Do you often eat it now?

    – I eat ice cream often. We have a lot of tastings at our company. In addition, when visiting international exhibitions, you also have to try many types of ice cream.

    – There are many types of ice cream in the world: as many countries as there are types of ice cream. Which of them do you like the most?

    – I really love ice cream as a product. Therefore, in every country I visit, I try local ice cream.I love Italian gelato very much – it’s hard not to love it. I also always buy dondurma – this is a unique Turkish ice cream made from goat’s milk, with the addition of sugar, fruit or fruit syrups.

But, of course, most of all I love ice cream from our factory (laughs) .

    – Even now one can still hear sighs of nostalgia for the “Soviet ice cream” in Ukraine. What can you say about the “longing” for the ice cream of those times?

    – Ukrainians love ice cream, and for older consumers this is a real standard of ice cream. The adherence to the ice cream has developed historically. Therefore, we have always had many different types of ice cream in our assortment. For us, it really is such a “trick” – remember our “100% ice cream” or creamy “Children’s desire”. By the way, the brand “Children’s Desire” has become a trend-setter in the Ukrainian market of the “children’s” segment. And 10 years after the release of “100% ice cream”, the company created the “Eskimo” brand. By the way, the company’s experts made a new line of ice cream in accordance with GOST 1961 – speaking of the legendary ice cream.

Now one of the trendy directions of the company’s production is organic products. We brought to the market the country’s first organic ice cream “Eskimo-Organic”. Milk for the new product of the company is supplied by the Zhytomyr company Organic Milk, which is certified in accordance with the EU Regulation on organic production. And then there is “Cream-ice cream” with a fat content of 15%. In general, no matter who likes the sundae, everyone will find their own!

    – We know that you are making your Ice Cream Party.Tell us a little about this.

    – Our Ice Cream Holidays is a project that was created for children and for the sake of children. It is a family event that allows families to have fun and exciting time together. Since 2004, the holidays have been held annually, we have never suspended them. This year alone, we cannot yet hold the holidays due to the quarantine associated with the pandemic. But we well understand how important it is not to deprive children of joy, happy emotions, companionship and family comfort. What we can as a socially responsible company is to give happiness and delicious ice cream helps us with this.

    – Those who managed to visit your plant speak most of all about the excursion to the plant. Are you conducting them now? How can you get on such an unusual excursion?

    – After a comprehensive reconstruction, we made corporate excursions. In 2018, 623 excursions were held, which is more than 18 thousand visitors. In 2019, the enterprise was visited by more than 16 thousand people and more than 646 excursions were conducted.Students and schoolchildren from different regions of Ukraine, representatives of organizations – residents of Zhytomyr and guests of the city, ambassadors of different countries, visitors from abroad had the opportunity to learn the secrets of making ice cream No. 1 in Ukraine and enjoy ice cream to their fill. However, in 2020 and now, due to quarantine, excursions are not held. And when it will be possible to restore them is also still unknown.

    – The largest ice cream in the world weighs 14 tons, and its height reaches 3 meters. You can see this miracle in the center of Zhitomir. Please tell us what makes this monument special.

    – We opened the Ice Cream Monument on April 17, 2013. The sculpture is made of granite and, according to the architects, is capable of withstanding even an eight-point earthquake. The monument even got into the Ukrainian Book of Records as the first ice cream monument in Ukraine! By the way, it was created according to the drawings of a resident of Zhitomir Artem Mikitenko, who won the sketch competition. The work of Artyom was chosen from among one and a half thousand of submitted works. And the monument itself was created by Stanislav Krinitsky.

All elements are made by hand from four types of granite – this is not an easy material, therefore the work is unique.

    – What’s new to expect for consumers in the next “ice cream” season?

    – Now we are preparing for the ice cream season. We prepare a lot of new ice cream products, frozen semi-finished products. We keep it a secret for now – but there is something to surprise you with (smiles) . We always try to be the first to enter the market with innovative products, improve quality, improve business processes – to be a leader, you need to constantly develop.

    – What do you think is the success of “Rud” ice cream?

    – Teamwork and commitment.

    – Like everything sweet, they treat ice cream with caution. Can ice cream be beneficial?

    – I will name the main arguments in favor of this delicious dessert:

Firstly, ice cream gives the body energy to boost immunity.

Secondly, it is a valuable source of calcium. You know, children are not very willing to drink milk. But ice cream is eaten with great pleasure!

Thirdly, ice cream contains about 100 substances valuable for the body: more than 20 amino acids of protein, 25 different fatty acids, 30 mineral salts, 20 vitamins, as well as enzymes very important for metabolism. Ice cream is characterized by high nutritional value and energy capacity.

And also, according to many scientists, ice cream stimulates the body’s production of a special substance – serotonin, or “the hormone of happiness”, which is able to protect us from stress and raise our mood.

In addition, ice cream has been proven to strengthen bone tissue, lower blood pressure, boost immunity and stimulate mental activity.

Here, I might surprise you, but ice cream is also useful in case of a tendency … to sore throat! For acute sore throat, after removal of tonsils, with stomatitis and other inflammatory processes, when any food is not possible, doctors often recommend ice cream.

By the way, scientists have developed a formula for the correct eating of ice cream.

90,000 Mars launched ice cream production in Russia

MOSCOW, Aug 21 – PRIME. The American company Mars has launched the production of ice cream in Russia – the products are produced at the facilities of the Unilever company in the Tula region, Mars said in a statement.

“The Mars company is launching in Russia the production of two types of ice cream in chocolate glaze under the Snickers brand and ice cream under the Snickers and Mars brands in buckets. The product will be produced at the Unilever factory in the Tula region,” the release says.

Production was launched at the beginning of July – 13 thousand units of portioned ice cream went on sale.At the end of August, it is planned to start selling ice cream in buckets. The company points out that in recent years, the market has seen an increase in demand for these product formats, and there may be a shortage of imported products.

“Therefore, Mars decided to establish production in Russia and go along the path of localizing raw materials. The share of raw materials from Russian suppliers in ice cream produced domestically reaches 80%,” the manufacturer adds. President of Mars LLC, general director of Mars Wrigley in Russia Maher Batruni noted that ice cream in buckets or briquettes is a very special format for Russia.

“The decision to launch local production of the bucket format is also connected with the peculiarity of ice cream consumption by Russians. For Russia, the so-called spoonable consumption is typical – consumers historically like to buy a large volume of ice cream, so that they can then put it in ice cream bowls and share with loved ones. “, – said Batruni, whose words are quoted in the release.

Mars is one of the world’s largest food manufacturers. Mars is a family-owned company founded in 1911 and headquartered in McLean, Virginia, USA.The corporation’s turnover in 2019 is $ 40 billion. The company’s brands include Mars, Snickers, Twix, Bounty, Milky Way, Orbit gum, Whiskas and Pedigree pet foods.

Russian ice cream accidentally became famous in China thanks to Putin: Food: From life: Lenta.ru

Ice cream of Korenovsky Milk Canning Factory accidentally gained popularity in China thanks to Russian President Vladimir Putin. This was announced in a conversation with RIA Novosti by the general director of the enterprise Igor Moskovtsev.

According to him, it was the ice cream of the Korovka Iz Korenovka trademark that Putin bought at the MAKS-2019 air show in Zhukovsky and treated his Turkish colleague Tayyip Erdogan to them. In addition, in 2016, the president brought Russian ice cream as a gift to Chinese President Xi Jinping at the G20 summit in Hangzhou, as well as in 2019, on the day of the 66th anniversary of the Chinese ruler.

Moskovtsev claims their brand name was not mentioned when Putin presented a box of ice cream to Xi Jinping. According to him, the Russian president himself did not know which ice cream was in the box, but probably someone from the Chinese side paid attention to the label and remembered the brand.

“We have been dealing with ice cream since 2011, we are still young producers in this market. But the brand “Putin’s favorite ice cream” was used for us, “Moskovtsev said. Some time later, a delegation from the PRC arrived in the Krasnodar Territory and asked the regional administration to show the plant where the “Cow from Korenovka” is made. Once there, the guests first of all asked why their president was presented with Russian ice cream of this particular brand.

They thought the ice cream was made on purpose, even by hand. They examined our production, asked where the cows were, what hay they ate, whether they were giving real milk. And then they began to find out what kind of ice cream they gave. I didn’t know what was in the box, but I assumed it was in the glass. They were delighted, immediately sorted out the cups and began to taste

    Igor Moskovtsev

The general director of the Korenovsky Milk Canning Plant

Moskovtsev complained about the other side of popularity in China – product counterfeiting. Over time, Chinese entrepreneurs opened an office in Shanghai and began producing ice cream from natural milk powder, using photographs of Putin, Medvedev and Moskovtsev in their advertising.“It took an effort to bring the Chinese partners to their senses,” the agency’s source said.

Earlier it was reported that the United States almost quadrupled purchases of Russian ice cream, becoming its largest buyer in the world. In second place (in value terms) is China, where ice cream worth $ 2.6 million was delivered in January-March.
