La prairie skin caviar luxe cream ingredients: La Prairie Skin Caviar Luxe Cream Review

La Prairie Skin Caviar Luxe Cream Review

What makes a product iconic? That was the question we asked as we edited this year’s list of the 100 most iconic beauty products of all time. Though every lipstick, mascara, hair spray, and cleanser on the list deserves its moment in the sun, there are a few key beauty icons who have earned to have their stories (legends?) expanded on in greater detail. Ahead, the story behind La Prairie’s caviar-infused moisturizer.

Skin Caviar Luxe Cream

La Prairie

For as long as modern skincare has existed, there have been formulas that have broken convention with rare ingredients. We’ve tried them all: flowers plucked from the base of Mount Everest, olive extract from an ancient tree, a plant so rare it can only be harvested for five minutes a year. But there’s one such formula that has not only stood the test of time, but has reimagined what luxury skincare looks and feels like.

That’s La Prairie’s Skin Caviar.

“Caviar is an outstanding natural product that is able to support life, and its richness in nutrients inspired us to explore its potential as a skincare ingredient,” Dr. Jacqueline Hill, La Prairie’s director of strategic innovation and science, says. “We discovered that it nourishes the skin and offers a range of exciting benefits. This triggered the audacious idea to include a caviar extract in a skincare treatment.” The first iteration of Skin Caviar launched in 1987 using a technology that allowed skin-repairing actives to be encapsulated in the form of a caviar bead—hence the name. “Over the years, we have studied the composition of caviar and the actions on skin cells of a series of caviar-derived active ingredients developed by La Prairie,” Hill continues. “We have found actions on epidermal, dermal, and hypodermal cells, and this has encouraged us to continue exploring this fascinating source of skin care benefits.”

Though there’s an entire range of products containing the caviar extract—including a new Nighttime Oil—the Skin Caviar Luxe Cream is perhaps the most iconic of them all.

The decadent cream wraps skin in coddling moisture, while the formula lifts, tightens, and tones over time. The result is nothing short of transformative, so you can bet that it comes at a cost: $530 for 50 milliliters, to be exact.

Of course, it isn’t just the formula that makes a product iconic; it’s the packaging too. In this case, the jar’s Bauhaus influence and signature shade of cobalt blue. “The work of Niki de Saint Phalle has a particular resonance for La Prairie, as it was her striking use of cobalt blue that was the inspiration behind La Prairie’s iconic Skin Caviar Collection color,” Greg Prodromides, La Prairie’s chief marketing officer, tells “In 1982, Niki was developing her eponymous fragrance from her atelier in a shared design studio on Fifth Avenue in New York City, where La Prairie’s team would often engage in creative exchanges. When La Prairie encountered Niki de Saint Phalle’s cobalt blue—her favorite color, which she describes ‘as the color of joy and luck’—the link became clear: Only cobalt blue would do. It was a fortunate encounter that would spark a bond with the House of La Prairie and seal it forever.”

Icons are often masters of reinvention—it’s how they guarantee longevity. In the case of La Prairie, the Skin Caviar Luxe Cream, Skin Caviar Luxe Cream Sheer, and Skin Caviar Sleep Mask were reformulated with “Caviar Premier” extract in 2018 for achieving “new heights of performance,” Hill adds. This was followed by the remastering of Skin Caviar Luxe Eye Cream in 2019. “Caviar Premier is an advanced new caviar complex, where we have enriched our natural Caviar Extract with a blend of biomolecules (lipids, proteins, peptides, DNA, carbohydrates), their building blocks (amino acids, nucleotides, sugars), and minerals,” Hill says. “Caviar Premier allows us to fully capture the lifting and firming potential of natural caviar.”

The result is the perfect blend of art and science: rich, indulgent, effective products that make your nighttime routine feel like an act of luxury.

A 101 Guide to the Best La Prairie Products

La Prairie Caviar Cream Luxe Review

In our new series, Why Is This So Expensive?, we explore the luxury products we love and exactly what you’re paying for. Up first? La Prairie’s, Caviar Premier, which retails for $485 .

      La Prairie

When one thinks of La Prairie, they think of caviar. The luxury Swiss skincare brand capitalized on the intriguing ingredient back in 1987 with its debut caviar product, Skin Caviar Dermo Beads. The brand has since expanded into a whole caviar collection, including a sleep mask, body cream, and even a cushion compact foundation. Now, La Prairie is debuting Caviar Premier, a “remastered” take on the original caviar formula. The Skin Caviar Luxe Cream retails for $485 for 50ml or, if you really want to douse yourself, $880 for 100ml. Why does it cost so much? I asked the team who created it to find out.

The cream is made of caviar extract sourced from Siberian sturgeon that is sustainably farmed.

Dr. Daniel Stangl, La Prairie’s director of innovation who leads product development, says the company’s past 30 years of research has shown them caviar extract has “firming, lifting, volumizing benefits, and gives back that elasticity to the skin.” He continues, “It really works on the skin’s extracellular matrix, all of that ‘scaffold’ that really gives the firmness to the skin.”

On top of that, Jacqueline Hill, La Praire’s director of strategic innovation and science, once told ELLE that caviar extract also enhances production of both collagen and ceramides, the naturally occurring lipids that help skin retain moisture.

Caviar Premiere took a total of four years of testing and trials in the lab.

Stangl says,”We have a small team. 10 to 15 people working in formula packaging development, and then it’s a small team managing all the development of exclusive active ingredients.” Part of the what you’re paying for is all the research that goes into maintaining what he calls the “sensorics” of the product, a.k.a. how it feels.

“Caviar premier is a mix of many, many different molecules from a chemical point of view. It’s not easy to incorporate those ingredients into a formula and to keep, at the same time, the sensorics,” shares Stangl. The mix of active ingredients often contradicts the ingredients needed to make the cream feel indulgent to the touch. “This is why we do dozens, sometimes hundreds of trials to reach that balance that makes the right formula,” he explains.

      La Prairie

Premium packaging includes a glass jar and silver application spatula.

“It goes back to what our client is, because when somebody pays, just to be very concrete, $500 or $1000 for a skincare product, they do not expect just another skincare experience,” Greg Prodromides, La Praire’s Chief Marketing Officer, says of the pomp and circumstance surrounding the cream. “Notice the immaterial side of luxury, the emotions you spark through the experience you just discovered—unboxing a product is a way to it.”

As for the silver spatula? There’s a practical reason: “If you use a spatula, you do not introduce what you have on your fingers—germs, microbes—into the cream,” explains Stangl. “You could eat with your fingers—why do you use a knife and a fork? It’s a little bit similar, you know? I love the idea of a spatula. It pays a little bit of respect to the cream and also to your skin.”

The little tool is also meant to prompt you into taking your sweet time with your skincare routine. This feeling is what La Prairie CEO Patrick Rasquinet emphasizes is what you’re really paying for. “Luxury is about time, a moment when you just indulge yourself. In this world it’s really more and more difficult to get time, to get space, to get silence,” he says. “Because everything is so easy to access, so quick, so on, that in fact to get time is becoming luxury.

But is the product worth $400 to $800?

If you can afford Caviar Cream Luxe, it definitely performs. Even after just using the product for one night, it revived my tired, travel-ravaged skin. The look and feel of the whole package, plus the silky feeling of the cream and the little silver spatula made my regular ‘ol routine feel more like a spa treatment. That being said, it’s still expensive. If you prefer the finer things in…say, designer bags and shoes, five star hotels, and food with truffle on it, then yes, this cream very much makes sense in your life.

Sarah Rainey looks at science behind La Prairie skin cream

Ruby Wax described La Prairie face cream as ‘better than Botox’. But is it?

Brutal facials, tubs of vitamins and the scary option of the hypodermic needle and scalpel — for many women, chasing youth can feel infuriatingly elusive and complicated.

But comedian and writer Ruby Wax, 64, claims to have found it — at the bottom of a very expensive pot of moisturiser.

She described La Prairie face cream as ‘better than Botox’. But is it?

Sarah Rainey looks at the science behind this ‘magic’ skin cream — and speaks to the women who say no price is too high for eternal youth.

Celebrity devotees include film star Angelina Jolie, Mad Men actress Christina Hendricks and model Helena Christensen

The cream takes its name from the famous La Prairie clinic, located on the shores of Lake Geneva, and founded by Dr Paul Niehans in 1931.

The ambitious young Swiss believed that molecular science held the key to preserving life and halting the aesthetic onslaught of time.

His approach was dubbed ‘live cell therapy’ and involved harvesting cells from cows and sheep embryos and injecting them directly into the buttocks of patients which he believed stimulated regeneration of their cells.

Nevertheless, his name and reputation grew and some of his earliest clients included actress Marlene Dietrich, Winston Churchill, several Popes and, later, Margaret Thatcher.

The clinic launched its skincare range in 1978, while the iconic caviar collection was debuted in 1987.

Victoria Beckham, who uses the £271 Cellular Radiance Eye Cream every night before bed

A 50ml pot of La Prairie’s trademark ‘skin caviar luxe cream’ costs a staggering £329 (or £597 for a 100ml pot) — and has some pretty wacky ingredients.

Chief among these is ‘caviar extract’, which comes from fish eggs.

The caviar we eat usually comes from mature sturgeon or salmon, but caviar for skincare can come from a much wider range of fish — and may be from unfertilised eggs or the fluid released when they hatch.

The extract is isolated in a laboratory, where scientists remove minuscule amounts of oil or cellular material from the eggs, filter it and add it to the skincare product.

La Prairie insists it ‘helps to st imulate collagen production in order for the skin to maintain its firmness and elasticity’. Bu t e xpe r t s a r e n’ t convinced.

Harley Street aesthetic doctor David Jack says the hype about caviar is unsubstantiated — and you’d be better off eating it than smearing it on your skin.

‘The results are most likely due to the moisturising and exfoliating effects of some of the ingredients — like shea butter and silicones,’ Dr Jack explains.

‘The claims of being “lifting and firming” are very non-specific. It would have to be used for a long period of time to have any lasting or significant effect.’

Also stirred into the La Prairie range are ginseng root complex, which comes from an Asian herb and is said to promote cell regeneration; horsetail extract, another herb dating back over 270 million years, said to strengthen the skin’s connective tissues and reduce fine lines; and algae extract, to keep the skin hydrated.

Some of La Prairie’s products even contain tiny quantities of precious metals, such as gold and platinum, which La Prairie claims give your face a ‘youthful radiance’ — and not just from the shock of the price tag.

But again, some professionals suspect that this is little more than an expensive hype.

      I’m a GP – and I’m convinced!

Dr May Jay Ali, 37, spends around £1,000 a year on La Prairie products

Dr May Jay Ali, 37, is a GP working in Birmingham. She spends around £1,000 a year on La Prairie products.

She says: Though the bad acne of my youth was successfully treated with medication, I had scarring, which I covered with heavy make-up.

In addition, when working as a junior doctor, I found that lack of sleep and dehydration during 12-hour shifts gave me terrible dark circles under my eyes.

I’m no skincare snob — I’ve tried everything from Clarins to Nivea — but nothing has quite compared to the results I’ve seen from a few select creams, including La Prairie.

It was sheer luck which led to my discovery of the products. My sister has a senior job in Duty Free and she gave me a gift set for my birthday five years ago. I never looked back.

After a few weeks, I noticed that I looked far more wide awake and my dark circles had faded. I attributed this to La Prairie’s Cellular Swiss Ice Crystal Eye Cream — it costs £181.

And after a few months I realised my acne scars were faded, which I believe was down to the £239 face cream from the same range.

As a doctor, with some knowledge of topical ingredients, I think I’m far too sensible to be taken in by high prices or swanky packaging. I search for creams containing such ingredients as nourishing oils, hyaluronic acid, vitamin E and retinol.

Acne sufferers can worry about over-moisturising, but dr y skin produces more oil, thus making acne worse, and the balance in La Prairie is just right for my skin.

I know it’s not superior to Botox — nothing can compare to an aesthetic treatment in terms of results, but it has certainly worked for me.

With caviar costing approximately £1.50 a gram — and gold at £30 a gram — it’s perhaps no wonder that La Prairie will set you back a small fortune.

A single 100ml pot of La Prairie is meant to last a whole year, putting it at £1.64 a day.

The concentrated ingredients mean you only need a tiny blob of cream, and pots come with tiny spatulas to measure out the correct amount.

But when you consider there’s a very simi lar product, costing £3.49 at Lidl, it seems a scandalous waste of money.

Studies testing the efficacy of caviar skincare are few — and mostly carried out by the brands themselves.

La Prairie research reportedly shows that caviar extract enhances the production of collagen in fibroblast cells, which make and regenerate human tissue, as well as boosting the production of ceramides — the natural fats and oils which help skin retain moisture and make it glow — in the epidermis, the outer layer of the skin.

A study by a long-established Swedish cosmetics brand, Kerstin Florian, found that a cream containing caviar extract reduced the depth of wrinkles in participants by up to 27 per cent in two months.

And another study by Norwegian biotechnology company Aqua Bio Tech ASA, back in 2011, found that women between the ages of 40 and 65 saw an improvement in wrinkles over three months.

Unfortunately, independent experts don’t agree with these findings. For example, Londonbased cosmetic dermatologist Dr Sam Bunting says that the most effective components of La Prairie face cream ‘are readily accessible in a much more affordable format on the High Street’.

Basic suncream or moisturiser containing retinoids — derivatives of vitamin A, proven to unclog pores and minimise wrinkles — are far better anti-ageing products than caviar, Dr Bunting adds.

It’s an investment in my future self

Dalila Salgueiro Trillo, 31, is a freelance marketing expert and spends around £2,000 a year on La Prairie

Dalila Salgueiro Trillo, 31, is a freelance marketing expert. She lives in London and spends around £2,000 a year on La Prairie.

She says: I have a 52-year-old aunt back in Spain who barely looks in her 30s. She — and I — think her incredibly youthful complexion is down to decades of using La Prairie.

I began my own love affair with it aged 25, and I can’t see myself ever looking back. I’ve always been interested in beauty products; as a child I used to look with fascination through my aunt’s bathroom cabinets, admiring the mysterious glass bottles and vials, and especially the elegant silver La Prairie pots.

I probably have every single product, and stock up in Harvey Nichols department store every three months or so. I particularly like the neck cream (£162) — everyone my age is concerned about ‘tech neck’ — where you develop wrinkles from nodding your head over a laptop for hours on end.

I also love the Caviar Cream, which starts at £329, although it whiffs a bit, so I only use it at night. Yes, it’s expensive, but you don’t slather it on and I think it lasts a long time, and Latino skin has a tendency to pigmentation, which neither I, nor more importantly my aunt, have developed.

As to whether or not it’s better than Botox, well, I’ve tried both so feel qualified to comment. I had a little Botox in my forehead last year — just to alleviate one little frown line which had appeared between my eyes. It’s great, but given the choice, I’d go with La Prairie — I think that it’s great preventative skincare.

‘I began my own love affair with it aged 25, and I can’t see myself ever looking back’

Yes, and it’s certainly less invasive. Botox is a chemical which is injected into the skin to partially paralyse mus c l e s and inhibi t their movement.

Its effects are immediate and last from three to six months. The results are much slower — and more subtle — with face cream, which i s much more about ‘prevention’.

There’s also the cost — at between £150 and £300 per session, Botox is much more expensive.

Another difference is the areas they work on: Botox specifically targets fine lines, while La Prairie caviar cream works more generally over the whole face, but doesn’t penetrate as deeply.

Dr Bunting explains: ‘The ingredients in La Prairie moisturiser prevent water loss from the skin’s surface and plump its appearance, temporarily reducing wrinkles.

Botox is proven to reduce wrinkles by targeting over-active muscles in key trouble zones, such as the frown area. To compare the two is like comparing chalk and cheese.’

Celebrity devotees include film star Angelina Jolie, Mad Men actress Christina Hendricks, model Helena Christensen and Victoria Beckham, who uses the £271 Cellular Radiance Eye Cream every night before bed.

Husband David has admitted to stealing it from her, too.

Another male advocate is Rolling Stone Sir Mick Jagger, 74, who’s reportedly a fan of £300 La Prairie facials.

The Lake Geneva location has played host to more publicity-shy royals and sports stars over the years — with their identities zealously protected by the discreet La Prairie staff.

While the caviar in La Prairie has been meticulously sterilised, experts say there may still be risks from some of the active ingredients in the cream.

First, some of the components are classified as irritants, and a number of users have reported red, dry and itchy skin after using La Prairie for the first time.

The company’s creams also contain parabens — preservative chemicals which prevent the growth of bacteria or mould, but which have also been shown to mimic the hormone oestrogen in the body’s cells.

Parabens have been found in breast tumours, so many beauty products are now made without them.

What’s more, Dr Jack says some of the ingredients in La Prairie moisturisers are derived from palm oil, the harvesting of which is destroying rainforests around the planet.

      English summary:

The Sleep Mask features a multi-tasking formula, to be applied at night time when skin is at its peak for absorption and can be repaired and renewed. It contains caviar extract to firm and lift; sunflower seed oil to replenish moisture; and Carica papaya to smooth and improve the overall appearance of skin.

Caviar extracts are coupled with a three-in-one active ingredient, which reinforces the skin’s barrier function and regulates moisture. It stimulates filaggrin synthesis and the production of aquaporin-3, to maintain the water balance within the skin cells. Willow bark extract exfoliates, while algae extracts and caffeine help to improve micro-stimulation.

In the Caviar Collection ( Caviar Collection ), the specialists of the brand La Prairie have embodied the exquisite pleasure of using cosmetics and unsurpassed care.

La Prairie Skin Caviar Luxe Cream Review, Swatch

Claims: The most elegant, richly textured, and most consistent performance ever achieved in a cosmetic moisturizer! It is the ultimate firming and lifting experience, leaving your skin looking radiant, feeling softer, silky and firm. Only a facelift will do more!

      Price : Approximately $ 375

Available at the Palladium Mall in Mumbai and most airports around the world.

      My experience with Lay-Lay-Lay-Lay-Lay-Live:

I absolutely love the whey from the La Pariri range of caviar. And I am totally in love with this cream. I use caviar cream at night along with a serum. And it showed brilliant results on my skin.

This is a thick moisturizer and I guess it works great for normal to dry skin. It is quickly absorbed, leaving the skin soft and rich. Through continuous use, the skin has made the skin soft and healthy. My skin looks like I have a mini face done at night when I look at my skin in the morning. 😀 And your skin only gets better every day.

It comes in a bulky blue bottle with a silver cap. There is also a small silver spoon that comes with it.I found it very comfortable to lose it, so I mostly use it with clean fingers. You only need a little for your face and neck because the cream is rich and nutritious enough.

It has never disturbed me even though the weather is so hot.

As I mentioned earlier, these La Prairie products have significantly changed the structure and appearance of my skin over the past few months. Even though the price was so steep, I would love to come back to these products over and over again.Caviar skin care is also an anti-aging skin care, so you get the benefits of getting that youthful-looking skin while also preventing skin damage.

It has its share of the journey of some of the bad ingredients like parabens. Considering this is such a luxurious skincare, they might find an alternative for the best skincare possible.

Regardless, it works, and it works so wonderfully that it will be difficult for me to use any other night cream.

Give it a try if you have normal dry skin and are looking for something powerful for your skin. It wouldn’t disappoint you. Fully justifies what he claims. :))

More than 30 years ago, La Prairie Caviar Extract was introduced for the first time, capable of quickly regenerating and tightening the skin. We will tell you what changes have occurred with the magic formula of funds and what the Skin Caviar collection inspires.

      – 1 –

La Prairie products are based on research that appeared back in the 30s of the last century in the clinic of the Swiss surgeon Paul Neuhans on the shores of Lake Geneva. The doctor devoted his life to the study of aging processes. Its developments were so successful that they became the basis for rejuvenation programs, to which celebrities from all over the world began to come: Marlene Dietrich, Charles de Gaulle, Winston Churchill.

      – 2 –

Scientists from La Prairie laboratory have discovered that the resulting caviar-based extract formula has a firming, moisturizing and regenerating effect thanks to the Vitelline nutrient, which is composed of phospholipids and phosphoproteins. In addition, the Skin Caviar collection is based on a secret cellular complex, amino acids, algae and malt extracts, and marine proteins. Gradually, the caviar collection was supplemented with all the new innovative achievements. This is how “Caviar Water” appeared, which, due to the process of steam distillation, possesses rare and hard-to-reach caviar molecules, and a little later the “Caviar Absolute”, rich in lipids and caviar proteins, was discovered. Today is the time for the Caviar Premier complex – it has further enriched caviar extract with beneficial properties.

      – 3 –

Using the resulting renewed formula and the innovative Caviar Premier complex, scientists have created Skin Caviar Luxe Cream, a moisturizing cream with an airy and silky texture that works to strengthen the cell structure and accelerate the regeneration process. All thanks to patented caviar peptides, ribonucleic acid, ceramides, natural polysaccharide and caviar and sea grape extract.

The company believes that the process of creating cosmetics is similar to the work of an artist. La Prairie has long and actively supported exhibitions, biennials and festivals, and also attracts artists and sculptors for collaborations. Each of them is inspired by La Prairie products.

At the exhibition held in Basel, a young Swiss artist Manon Vertenbrock presented her works, who entered into a “creative dialogue of generations” with one of the most famous feminists of the past – Niki de Saint Phalle.

In early September, the brand took part in the Moscow art fair Cosmoscow for the first time. The design concept of the stand and lounge revolved around 4 components of the process of creating Skin Caviar Luxe Cream and Luxe Cream Sheer: masterpiece, design, science, pleasure. La Prairie also prepared a surprise for Cosmoscow guests: the Art of Indulgence facial treatment, which works to strengthen the face contour with a lifting effect and to give the skin a fresh look and healthy glow.

How La Prairie cosmetics stop time

Dr. Paul Niehans, a scientist and graduate of the University of Zurich, opened the La Prairie clinic right on the shores of Lake Geneva in Switzerland. He was looking for an answer to the eternal question “How to prolong youth?” – and was convinced that only science can give him the answer. In 1931, after years of research, the doctor made a discovery at the clinic La Prairie, developing a cell complex, the use of which gave amazing results.

His approach was notable for originality, which served as the source of rumors throughout Switzerland and far beyond its borders, that time can be stopped at La Prairie. So, in 1978, the La Prairie brand of cosmetics appeared, and the very cellular complex developed by Niehans formed the basis of the molecular formula.

The complex itself is a truly unique product: La Prairie has taken heightened security measures to keep its formula a secret. In addition to patented discoveries and manufacturing processes, the company uses three separate laboratories to ensure that the exclusive cell complex is kept in the strictest confidence. One laboratory is designed for yeast fermentation processes, the second for the fermentation of microorganisms, and the third for mixing various components. Thus, the specialists who work on the creation of the product do not know its full recipe.

Continuing research, La Prairie began to add the most precious ingredients to their cosmetics – caviar extracts, the rarest platinum and luxurious gold. These ingredients are included in the main – and perhaps the most popular – of the brand’s lines: Platinum Rare Collection, Skin Caviar Collection, White Caviar, combined with other natural elements, such as stem cells of forest tobacco and raspberry extract.

The legendary Skin Caviar collection is aimed at combating the loss of the natural volume and density of the skin. By the way, quite recently, in August last year, in honor of the 30th anniversary of the line, the brand presented a new product – Absolute Filler cream, which fills wrinkles and smoothes the skin. Absolute Filler is based on caviar absolute, which contains the maximum concentration of caviar oil and caviar proteins. Together, they stimulate collagen production to nourish and moisturize the skin.

The effect is enhanced by extracts of brown algae and peony root: they smooth the skin and increase its elasticity. The complex of these components stimulates the strengthening of the extracellular structure of the skin, filling, as if nourishing the skin from the inside, providing smoothing of wrinkles. In addition to the cream, experts advise using a caviar extract lotion from the same series – Skin Caviar Essence-In-Lotion. The main feature of the Skin Caviar line is also the method of their production: the active components of caviar are extracted by steam distillation.
