Read on below to find out what our take is on the best double-sided tape for fabric and our reviews!

#1: Best Overall Quick-Fix Choice: Dritz Stitch Witchery Fusible Bonding Web in White

Permanent: yes

Iron needed: yes

As the name says itself: with this fusible bonding web by Dritz, you are immediately able to do perform some stitch witchery! This hemming tape has a permanent application, and with that, it bonds two layers of material. For application, you will need an iron to finish off your seams with this iron tape. This means that – for the ones amongst us that do not prefer sewing, it is a perfect choice.

Dritz Stitch Witchery is suitable to bond many types of fabric and is next to that ideal for machine washing and dry cleaning. Not only for hemming but also to repair malfunctions in clothing, home accessories, and more, this hemming tape is your best choice. This package contains a roll of 5/8 inch by 20 yards of fabric tape for a very fair price in a plain white color. But, if you are seeking anything other than that, Dritz has many other options.

#2: Easiest in use: Scotch Essentials Permanent Hem Bonding Strips

Permanent: yes

Iron needed: no

The reason that Scotch Essentials permanent bonding strips are our chosen number two on the reviews list is that this tape for fabric is extremely easy to use. The pieces of double-sided tape are pre-cut, meaning no hassle when cutting the right size. You can simply take as much you need and even repair urgent clothing malfunctions on the go. The application of these bonding strips holds up through washing and dry cycles. The package contains no less than 30 strips of 3/4 inch by 4 inches.

Also, this tape works good on most fabrics but is less suitable for more delicate materials such as silk. Another great option when you are seeking a no-sew solution! Even though the tape is permanent, it doesn’t mean you can make slight mistakes; the consistency of the tape is comparable to gum that holds cardboard labels inside cookware when you buy it. It sticks strongly but can be peeled off.

#3: Best for Outerwear and Activewear: Gear Aid Tenacious Tape Fabric and Vinyl Repair Tape

Permanent: yes

Iron needed: no

We have mentioned earlier that different types of tape match different types of fabric. So, for the outdoor-enthusiasts, or just the ones that need a more strong solution to quick-fix their (winter) jackets, for example, Gear Aid Tenacious Tape is, according to us, the best choice. This tape is made to fix holes, bond tears, and other malfunctions on more advanced, technical materials. Most of these fabrics are synthetic and need some extra strength.

A big plus to this fabric tape is that it is weatherproof and easy to use: it is a simple peel-and-stick application. No iron is needed to apply this strong fabric tape, and it is not suitable for natural fabrics such as cotton or other more delicate materials. It is solely meant to fix heavy duty items, such as outerwear, tents, and even rubber or vinyl is fixed in a second using this Gear Aid tape.

Last but not least, Tenacious Vinyl Repair is available in seven different colors to match your project, on a roll with the measurements of 3 inch by 20 inches.

#4: Best Heavy-Duty Iron-On Tape: Singer Heavy Duty Iron-On Fusing Web, Fabric Adhesive

Permanent: yes

Iron needed: yes

In case you are on the hunt for a heavy-duty tape that can fix items such as your favorite pair of jeans, corduroy fabrics, or heavy fabrics used for curtains, Singer just might have the right product for you. This iron-on strip fuses two materials as a breeze, no-sew! The strips can be heat-pressed, and once the tape is securely applied, the fabric can be washed, dry-cleaned, and worn without the tape coming off – it is that strong!

Each package of fusing web contains an 8-yard long and 3/4-inches wide adhesive strip. Also for tears in the fabric, this is a great no-fuss option. The only thing to keep in mind when this tape is applied is to let it rest long enough before washing it, as the bonding might weaken when washing it too soon. All in all, this fusing tape is perfect for those running short in time and who wish to bond heavier fabrics together!

#5: Best Non-Tape Version: Aleenes Fabric Fusion Adhesive

Permanent: yes

Iron needed: no

Not only can you spice up fabrics with embellishment by using this adhesive, but it also works incredibly well for no-sew hemming and fixing any tears or holes in materials. When you are a fan of crafting, there are numerous other situations and projects you can use Aleenes Fabric Fusion as well. With its permanent application, you can rely on its long-lasting abilities. Another pro to this adhesive is that it is clear-colored, based on water, low-odor, and non-toxic formula. Which makes the product safe to use for children’s items as well.

Similar to the other four reviewed products, this one is also suitable to machine-wash and dry-clean. It works well on a wide variety of materials, such as cotton, (faux) leather, and jersey, and doesn’t stiff. Although, as this is a glue-type of application, it will need a little more time to dry in and let it sit. As for the price, that is slightly higher, but given the many applications, it is still a fair price for this kind of product.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below, we have listed a few commonly asked questions with an answer to guide you a bit more.

What does fabric tape do?

Fabric tape or hemming tape is a good and useful product that allows their user to melt seams (with an iron), hem seams, or different bond fabrics by sticking them together without using a needle and thread. Does Gorilla Tape stick to fabric?

Although Gorilla Tape (or similar duct-tape) is known to be extremely multifunctional and sticking to many types of surfaces, to stick fabric to fabric, it is recommended to use tapes especially designed to do so to avoid disappointment and achieve the best results.

Does masking tape stick to fabric?

Yes, it does, but it is more of a quick solution. Also, masking tape is often one-sided and makes it hard to stick and bond fabric to fabric.

Not all hemming tape is permanent. You can find out by carefully reading the packaging and user information on the fabric tape. Many tapes are temporary and can be adjusted and removed; others, often iron-on tapes, are permanent.

Why we love double sided fabric tape

Ever notice the celebrity walking the red carpet in a barely there dress, waving and sashaying while all the important parts stay covered?  Have you noticed how the button up shirts of your favorite male and female TV actors never gap to reveal a bit of skin in between?   Lastly, have you watched a dancer turn, flip and jump and notice the costume stays perfectly in place?

The entertainment industry has known for years how to keep a wardrobe in place using double sided fabric tape.  Whether you are in the spotlight or not, we recommend double sided fabric tape for temporary repairs and quick fixes.

Double sided fabric tape comes in a little roll that looks similar to a roll of scotch tape.  You can find this item at a fabric store, drug store, grocery store and online.  It’s inexpensive, clear, and won’t leave a residue or damage your clothes.  The application is quick and easy with no need to iron or sew.  Fabric tape can be used on a variety of fabrics including leather and denim.  However, be careful when applying to delicates such as silk.

Most common uses for double sided fabric tape:

Quickly repair a hem in your pants or skirt. Turn the garment inside out and lay it flat.  Cut the amount needed and place sticky side of tape below the hem stitching on the backside.  Fold over the fabric of the outside of the hem and smooth with your hand.  Press to secure.

Secure a bursting button down. Place one side of the tape right above the buttons.  Connect the other side secretly underneath the part of the shirt that loops over the button

Tape down the top of a gaping shirt. Tape along the top edge of a shirt that gaps when you bend over.  Connect the other side of the tape to your own skin so that it doesn’t reveal all when you bend down to pick something up.

Other uses for double sided fabric tape include:

  • Tack down a button down shirt collar
  • Fix a peek a boo bra strap to spaghetti strap tank tops & party dresses.
  • Secure a wrap dress
  • Secure a loose sling back shoe
  • Keep your scarves and belts in place

We recommend having double sided tape on hand now before you really need it.  It’s especially handy when traveling this season.

What have you used double sided tape for?  We’d love to hear your tips!

Got a Hole in Your Favorite T-Shirt? Here’s the No-Sew Trick to Fix It

TipHero

Did you know that you don’t have to say goodbye to your favorite t-shirt just because you’ve worn a hole in it? That’s right—there is actually a way to repair the garment to a wearable condition all without touching that sewing machine. It’s the absolute easiest way to extend the life of those shirts because — get this — the process won’t take you more than 10 minutes!

If that t-shirt hole is one of those tiny-yet-annoying pinpricks, our no-sew method is the absolute best way to take care of it. No needle and thread, no bumpy stitches, and nearly no time at all.

No-Sew T-Shirt Repair

Materials

  • Damaged shirt (hole should be in the shape of a pinhole, measuring to 5 millimeters or less)
  • Iron
  • Ironing board
  • Fusible bonding web
  • Cutaway stabilizer
  • Pressing cloth (or any nontextured cotton cloth free of printing or embellishments can be used)
  • Spray bottle filled with water

Directions

  1. Heat it up.

Turn your t-shirt inside out and place it on the ironing board with the hole facing towards you. Iron the section of material on and around the hole until the area is completely wrinkle-free. Once cool, use your finger to bring together the excess pieces of string around the hole so that it is completely covered.

  2. Prepare the repair.

Take a 1-inch square of fusible bonding web and set it over the damaged area. Then take a slightly larger piece of cutaway stabilizer and place it directly over the piece of fusible bonding web.

  3. Bandage up that hole.

Switch your iron to the wool setting. (Don’t worry about any fabric damage; this method is safe for any cotton tee.) Gently place a pressing cloth over the fusible bonding web and stabilizer, and lightly dampen the area using a spray bottle.

Once moistened, take your heated iron and place it directly on top of the damaged area and the layers of bonding web, stabilizer, and pressing cloth. Without moving or pressing, leave the iron in place for 10 seconds, then carefully remove so as not to disturb the webbing.

  4. Perform the finishing touches

Remove the cloth and turn the tee inside out so that the “right” side is facing you. Take a look at the hole; if you notice that not all loose threads have merged, repeat step one and gather the area together by using your fingers. Then, press the side with the iron once again.

This process may take you a few tries, but once you get it, you will know—that unsightly hole will be completely gone! Simply repeat the the finger-pressing and iron-pressing steps until your shirt is as good as new.

What do you think of this no-sew patching technique? Have you ever tried this particular method before? How do you mend your t-shirts?

Hot melt tapes

Hot melt tapes – helpers in sewing!

In the modern world, many technological materials are used to create high-quality clothing! Their use helps to completely eliminate deformation of products, which, in turn, improves the quality of your clothes.

But if you are far from a professional sewing business, then we will reveal to you a few secrets, and we will prove that hot-melt adhesive tape should be in the house of every housewife!

Consider the following types of adhesive materials:

Glue thread-stitching tape

One of the types of technological tapes is thread-stitching tape.It is made on a coarse calico basis or from a thread-stitched non-woven fabric (more elastic and easier to fit along rounded lines).

The main application of such a tape is to strengthen the armhole, neckline and protect the seams from stretch marks. It is best used for rounded parts, as well as to strengthen the fold line of the lapel, bead, etc.

Thread-stitching tape bias reinforced with thread or soutache

Thread-stitching tape (edge) can be cut obliquely, reinforced with stitching (thread) or soutache.

Such tapes are more durable, therefore they are suitable for wrapping sleeves or cutting, things will be more wearable, the tape not only improves the overall appearance of the product, but several times facilitates the production process itself, helping to make the processing of edges and seams invisible.

For each type of clothing you can optimally conveniently and correctly select a sewing tape in width (10,15,20,25,30mm) and in color (black, white, gray). The use of adhesive tape guarantees not only the preservation of the shape of the garment during further wear, but also after washing it.

Cobweb Hot-melt

To glue parts in clothes, fix appliqués, loops or seams, reinforce edges use a cobweb – transparent, lightweight and thinnest material. It is the cobweb that is used to process the bottom of the product (for example, hemming trousers or skirts), but it is not suitable for all fabrics.

With the help of spider webs, you can attach any patch on the outside of the product or use it at home for minor repairs of clothes.

Externally, a cobweb is discreet, almost transparent strip from 0.5 to 5 cm wide, or a roll 90 cm wide – used to fix large applications on T-shirts, blouses, vests, as well as in needlework for various types of panels, bedspreads, tablecloths, napkins and much more …

There are two types of adhesive tape: regular and paper-based . A spider web on a paper basis, thanks to the mesh texture, makes the shape of things more plastic. That is why it is convenient to use it for knitted fabrics, i.e.because due to the mesh, the cobweb is stretched along with the fabric.

Adhesive tape is glued with a hot iron. The spider web is laid between two fabrics and the hem is ironed on the seamy side. Make sure that the iron does not touch the spider web, otherwise it will melt and leave a trail of glue on the sole of the iron.

Remember:

  • adhesive tape should not be used on fine fabrics, it may stiffen;
  • Jeans and thick fabrics are best hemmed becausej. over time, the cobweb may come off;
  • adhesive is not suitable for expensive products, because may damage the fabric. In this case, it is better to do the processing of the bottom with manual hemming stitches;
  • When using an adhesive spider web, do not lay it directly on the fold. Place it above the fold line, leaving a margin of about 0.5 cm to the edge;
  • wash clothes where glue was used at water temperatures up to 60 ° C or use dry cleaning services;
  • to glue fabric elements – use a tape about 10mm wide, as after processing the material will be harder and denser. If you have a wide tape, cut it into thinner strips for your convenience.

Grid on paper

Another type of hot-melt adhesive tape – grid on paper is a strip of some width where the glue is applied in the form of a grid to the paper. Such a mesh is used in the same way as a cobweb, but it has a difference in usability due to the paper. After heat treatment with an iron or a press, the paper can be easily removed.

To prevent stretching and shedding of the fabric, to reinforce a specific part of the garment along the edge of the bead or to simplify sewing work at certain stages, it is the mesh on the paper that is used.

The structure of the mesh allows you to maintain elasticity, and on knitted fabrics it allows you to easily stretch without weighing the material. It is also well used on lighter fabrics, in the processing of the lower edges, easily attaches small pieces of clothing to each other by attaching them to the main product, and if it is necessary to give rigidity to the fabric, this can also be done thanks to the mesh on paper.

Helpful advice !!! How to remove glue residues from fabrics?

It happens that you glued the spider web incorrectly. What to do then? There are several secrets that will help you:

Secret 1. Steam from the iron, without touching the fabric, steam the place where the cobweb is glued. After that, try to separate the layers of glued fabrics and carefully peel the cobweb from the product.

Secret 2. Between two layers of fabric, where there are glue residues, insert an unnecessary piece of material – iron with a steam iron. Remaining glue should be transferred to the underlying fabric. It may not be possible to remove all glue residues right away – it depends on the texture of the fabric.

Secret 3. Getting rid of the glue is easy thanks to regular alcohol. One has only to rub the place on the fabric where there was a cobweb or mesh, and the fabric will be cleaned of glue.

Adhesive spider web for repairing clothes and hemming jeans

By Sophia Read 5 min. Published

Adhesive tape is used for sewing and mending clothes. Let’s take a look at what types of ribbons are available for purchase and how to use them. Is it possible to hem jeans using a spider web and what is needed for this. The article provides step-by-step instructions for working with the material.

Types and method of application

The material is made from thin adhesive fibers, which randomly intertwine and create a weightless transparent fabric. The cobweb is produced in the form of a tape or a roll. The width of the tape varies within 5 cm. The roll available for purchase in regular stores is 90 cm.

Adhesive mesh can be two-sided and one-sided. If you need to hem in fabric where a seam is not desired, it is best to use the double-sided liner tape option. One-sided is good for reinforcing seams or stiffening garments.

The spider line can be made on a paper basis with a weaving in the form of rhombuses or without a backing. The cushioning material in the form of a mesh is more elastic, therefore it is recommended to use this option for knitwear. Adhesive tape in a roll is suitable for sealing curly cutouts and hems of thick fabrics.

Similar materials – non-woven and dublerin. They are used to seal and fix the edge of the product. All of them are glue-based. They differ in the composition of the canvas and in density. Dublerin is made on a fabric basis. Non-woven fabric is available with a continuous adhesive coating or in the form of dots. Both materials are denser than cobweb, but the strength of its adhesion is weaker.

How to use the adhesive pad

The principle of fixing the tape is to melt the adhesive and then harden. To do this, you need to use an iron.

The tape is placed between two layers of fabric and this place is ironed with a heated surface. When melting, the glue connects the parts and fixes them securely.

Adhesive strip is used in the following cases:

  • when it is not possible to hem trousers or a skirt, but the edge of the product is not finished;
  • for minor repairs of clothes;
  • to fix a patch or applique;
  • for sealing decorative cutouts;
  • when there is no other way to fix the order items.

When choosing a material, consider the density of the product and the color. The tape can show through transparent fabrics.

To work with the tape you will need scissors, pins, chalk and an iron.

Hem for light fabrics

If you need to trim the hem of a fine fabric or tulle dress, use a glue spider web to match the garment.

You can perform the work by following a simple instruction:

  • Place the product on a flat surface so that the edge is within your reach.
  • Take chalk or remnant and mark the line to be glued. Leave a small margin at the bottom of the hem, about half a centimeter.
  • Carefully apply the adhesive strip along the mark. If the tape is on paper, you need to put the tape so that the paper layer is on top. If not, use a piece of parchment by placing it on the spider web.
  • Run a hot iron over the paper to melt the adhesive.
  • Peel off the paper layer.
  • Fold as required. It can be fixed in some places with pins so that the fabric does not slide out.
  • Iron thoroughly.

Tip! If the heating temperature is too high for this type of web, use a layer of gauze or cloth. Iron the hem through it.

It is important to take into account that the adhesive material seals the fabric. Consider the possibility of using it before starting work.

Hemming Jeans

Step-by-step tutorials to help you quickly shorten denim pants without using a seam.Proceed as follows:

  • Try on the model and mark the fold with chalk or secure with pins.
  • Remove pants and mark on a flat surface.
  • Draw a straight fold line.
  • Step back 3 cm and cut off excess fabric.
  • Route the tape and iron it through the paper.
  • Remove the paper. Fold the fabric and iron again.

Done! Remember! The adhesive tape may lose its properties during washing. It is better to clean such products in dry cleaning or rarely wash with a gentle mode. Do not raise the water temperature more than 40 degrees.

Repairing torn clothes

To repair a cut web, you can use an adhesive spider web and a piece of cloth of the same size. To do this, you need:

  • If necessary, process the edge of the cut by removing threads and irregularities.
  • Align the edges and place the spider web and overlay on top. The overlay must be placed on the wrong side.If this does not hide the defect, it is better to use an appliqué or patch from the front.
  • Iron thoroughly, being careful not to move parts.

This simple method will help you make minor repairs to your clothes and save you the trouble.

Strengthening decorative cuts

The cut on the skirt, neckline or on the back can be beautifully finished with a gossamer ribbon. Allowances in the armhole or cut can be reinforced with the glue method. To do this, you need to:

  • Measure the length of the allowance and cut off the corresponding piece of tape.
  • Insert strip into armhole.
  • Iron thoroughly.

Advice! Pre-test the quality of the tape on any piece you don’t need. If the material is poorly glued even at high temperatures, it is better not to use it and buy another one. This glue will not stick. This can happen if the adhesive material has been stored improperly for a long time or is made from low-quality raw materials.

Let’s summarize! A glue web is a universal way to solve many everyday tasks related to sewing and repairing clothes. It can be used to replace the hem of trousers, to hide defects in outfits and to tighten the cuts.

Adhesive fabric is such a cushioning material, a feature of which is the presence of an adhesive layer on one side.

Adhesive materials are used for thermal bonding of garment parts (collars, cuffs, belts, shelves, bottoms and sleeves, pockets), as well as in many types of needlework. They are glued to the fabric to shape, for example, so the ears of the Tilda hare take an upright position. Typically, an adhesive tissue is inserted between the topsheet and backing of the products.

Adhesive fabrics, as a rule, consist of a base and a layer of adhesive applied to it. The base can be a non-woven (non-woven and spunbond) or woven material called dublerin, glue or thermal fabric.

For hemming a skirt or bottom of a trouser, double-sided fabric tape is more suitable, which completely relieves you of the need to hem these parts. Thus, the glue for clothing allows very quick and easy handling of the duplicated material.

Recommended

When dealing with an adhesive pad on a woven backing, consider the direction of the common thread to avoid skewing the finished product. This will not happen with non-woven pads, they can be cut in any direction, this is their advantage.

Production

Glue is applied to one side of the thermal fabric, it has a rough texture. Application can be continuous, but more often dotted. The location and size of the points vary. The choice depends on the characteristics of the fabric to be duplicated:

  • for thick wool, drape or leather, choose dublerin with large dots located far enough from each other;
  • for fine, take material with small, closely spaced glue dots.

Useful

The main advantage and distinguishing feature of adhesive fabrics from non-adhesive fabrics is that they do not need to be attached to the details of the product with pins and then sewn on. Their use in sewing is much more convenient.

Which glue is used

Synthetic glue can be used on different bases:

  • polyamide;
  • polyester;
  • polyethylene.

When heated to a temperature of 120-160 degrees and contact pressure, they first melt, then solidify. They have a good degree of adhesion to tissues and skin and resistance to mechanical stress. Also resistant to temperature (up to 100 degrees, some have heat resistance up to 160 degrees), microorganisms and fungi, oils. That is, during wearing of clothes, washing and simply storing in adverse conditions, the dublerin does not peel off.

Self-adhesive fabric is available in different weights and widths, black, white or gray. For translucent products, beige is also used.

Types and properties

The main properties and advantages of all types of adhesive fabrics over non-woven interlining materials are:

  • good drape ability;
  • strength.Not torn;
  • durability. They last much longer than non-wovens;
  • flexibility. Do not form rigid folds when the product is turned inside out.

And yet they all differ from each other in density and degree of elasticity and are divided into two large groups: elastic and inelastic.

Inelastic

Can be hard or soft. The base is polyester or cotton, does not stretch and is used to give fabrics extra strength and dimensional stability.
We advise you to read: what kind of polyester fabric.

  • It can be chiffon for completely transparent clothes.
  • For the manufacture of corsets, coarse calico is used, which gives the product additional rigidity and does not allow it to creep along the seams.
  • There is also a special thermal fabric for fur and leather goods.
  • Thermal collar fabric has a continuous adhesive coating, bending is much more difficult.

Elastic

Can be made of fine, lint-free jersey for duplicating fine fabrics, of nap knitwear for soft garments and dense garments (thanks to the nap, the glue base remains completely invisible).

When choosing an adhesive fabric, an important rule must be observed: it can be stiffer than the base fabric, but should not be denser.

The disadvantage of pads on a woven basis is their higher price (when compared with non-woven or spunbond).

What is adhesive tape

Tapes for gluing fabrics are of several types:

  • thread-stitched based on coarse calico or thread-stitched non-woven fabric. Used to reinforce rounded cut details such as armholes or necklines.
  • sewn on bias, reinforced with soutache or stitching. They are more durable, so they are great for decorating rounds or cuts. As a result, finished edges and seams are virtually invisible.
  • Fabric Adhesive Spider Web: This is the thinnest, lightweight, sticky, transparent material commonly used for the bottom of garments. It is also used to attach patches to the front of a product or for minor repairs. However, it is not suitable for all fabrics.

Watch the video on how to use the adhesive cloth for the patch:

  • mesh: this is a strip of paper on which a certain width of glue is applied, where the glue is applied in the manner of a mesh. Tape is used in a similar way to spider web, but paper has certain advantages: it can be easily removed after heat treatment.

How to properly glue the adhesive fabric with an iron

  1. Before cutting, the thermal fabric must be rolled. It is enough to sprinkle it with water from a bottle with a spray bottle, spread it out on a flat surface and let it dry. If this is not done, after the first wash, it may shrink, then the thing will warp and folds will form on it.
  2. When cutting, the thread direction is taken into account, it must be the same as that of the main fabric. The seam allowance is not made, it is simply not needed, and if it is done, the edge (seam) will turn out to be denser and more voluminous.
  3. The part is applied to the workpiece (garment parts) with the rough side to the wrong side, pressed with an iron heated to 100 degrees. If the surface area is large, each centimeter of it should be pressed with a delay of several seconds. The glue melts and sets, the parts can no longer be separated from each other.

You can clearly see how to glue fabric to fabric with an iron in the video.

Product care

Garments containing adhesive inserts should be washed and ironed as recommended by the manufacturer and in accordance with the composition of the main fabric. From washing, even in hot water, the adhesive layer should not be damaged.

Useful

If the rules were not initially followed and the cushioning material did not adhere well to the main one and came off, you need to carefully straighten it and press it with a heated iron.

How to correctly identify non-woven fabric, dublerin, cobweb and where are they used?

Artist: Irina Bortnik.

How to correctly identify non-woven, dublerin, cobweb and where are they used? Let’s figure it out.

Flizelin, dublerin, cobweb, adhesive synthetic winterizer, spunbond are used as the number one cushioning material in sewing, various types of needlework. Choosing the right texture and buying a high-quality type of liner for a jacket, parka, raincoat, coat, suit, dress and even a simple dressing gown is quite difficult. Even experienced seamstresses, craftsmen and fashion designers, who embody the wishes of customers and the ideas of designers, find it difficult to choose among modern materials. This question becomes a real stumbling block for novice seamstresses who decided to independently select this material among hundreds of samples in the online store.

How many models of clothes are created, so many decisions are made about the use of non-woven and dublerin. Various types of edging, glue padding polyester, cobweb, simple edging, spunbond are also widely used. Unique qualities allow convenient use of water- and heat-soluble materials.A wide range of these textures provides the main, perfectly fitting jacket or coat that will look like a glove on the figure. What is the difference between non-woven fabric and dublerin, and other types of gaskets, adhesives?

Instead of an entry.

In fact, every type of creativity and handicraft in which fabrics are used involves the use of simple and adhesive cushioning materials. This significantly improves the quality, gives an aesthetic appearance to the texture.” Why is required?” – on a completely reasonable basis, a novice seamstress will ask. This method is necessary to impart rigidity, dense texture, and also to prevent stretching of the edges, to maintain an attractive appearance of the finished product. This question directly concerns different types of sewing and needlework:

– Light clothing in which collars, sides, cuffs are slightly thickened;

– Patchwork and quilting, using special materials at the same time as ready-made markings for stitching;

– Making toys for all types and purposes;

– Sewing bags made of leather and fabric, in which not only traditional adhesive materials are used, but also special types of adhesive for leather.

Believe it or not, the same range is used in scrapbooking and even in an industry such as soap making, which requires non-adhesive water-soluble interlining. In practice, there is only artistic woodcarving, here you can do without spacers.

Pay attention ! Especially for the craftswomen who are not very versed in such operations, but want to understand the essence, I emphasize the fact that all used adhesive are attached to fabrics using moistening, or a hot iron .There are exceptions, but very rarely. Otherwise, you might think that some kind of scotch tape or similar tapes is being used. In fact, similar products are produced by the type of adhesive tape, but they are intended for leather and are used in the leather industry when sewing leather jackets, raincoats, bags and other assortments.

“Yes, I agree that it is necessary! But how to find the best option and choose the right material in each case? ” another equally important question of a novice seamstress follows.Indeed, it is not easy to figure out this variety of textures on your own. One hope for help from the Internet, where you can find any necessary answer.

And you know, I can say with full responsibility that after reading the vast information on adhesives, even I felt uncomfortable after recommendations such as “soaking the doublerin in water and after a good removal of moisture residues can be glued.” This process appears to be necessary in order “to observe the desired shrinkage of the dublerin.”However, for this purpose, it is only necessary to sprinkle lightly with water from a spray bottle and that’s it, because after soaking in a basin, the material loses its adhesive layer.

Needless to say about the work of novice needlewomen who took advantage of similar advice and received the opposite result to what they intended to see. Therefore, it is rather difficult to find worthwhile recommendations, especially if you yourself cannot distinguish “which is which”. In this publication, I use only the most common and simple names for adhesive and backing materials, since there are different levels of translation of the names of the same source. Therefore, it is better to approach from the practical side of the issue and “touch-pick-buy” what is actually required to create your real masterpiece.

Let’s get down to the heart of the problem. According to technical specifications, cushioning materials denote a separate class of special textures used for sewing. These include different types of edges, non-wovens, doublerins, edging and others. They are used not only in sewing various types of clothing, but also in needlework, including scrapbooking, quilting, and patchwork.
Judging by the name itself, the cushioning materials occupy an intermediate position between the individual layers of the finished product, jacket and coat, shirt, raincoat, blanket, elements of tilde-hare ears. Usually the position of this layer is between the front side and the lining fabric, but it is applied differently. Especially for a compacted texture, it may be necessary to glue individual elements of the quilt, jacket shelf. The fixation of this cushioning layer is carried out on a permanent basis, it remains in the finished product. In addition, the cushioning material can be used as an auxiliary texture. So, for example, after embroidering a picture or ornament, the finished product is rinsed so that the interlayer dissolves in water, and the beautiful artistic embroidery remains.

How are lining materials made? Modern technologies for the production of cushioning materials provide for the use of the principle of a sandwich, which uses a base and an applied adhesive layer. It can be of 2 types, continuous application and in the form of separate dots over the entire surface, this type is called point. There are one-sided types of cushioning materials with an adhesive layer applied on one side of the surface. It should also be noted the production of interlining, which entirely consist of continuous glue, the so-called glue threads. But first things first.

Adhesive substrates can be subdivided into:
– Woven origin, using real fabric;
– Nonwovens, which include fabrics and textures of artificial origin, obtained in the chemical, synthetic industry and other industries. It is the combination of the base with the applied adhesive that directly affects the use of adhesive and simple cushioning without an adhesive layer.

I draw your attention again! Each of the aforementioned glue stays permanently in the finished product. As an exception, water and heat-soluble types of textures can be noted, which are more used as an auxiliary element, instead of sweeping. Thus, sewing or embroidery is greatly facilitated, after sewing or quilted seams, the material can be simply removed by soaking the fabric or ironing it with a hot iron.In my publication, I focus on the adhesive materials. However, together with the cushioning textures, at the same time, mention should be made of other types of these materials that are not related to the usual classification. So let’s get started and generalize a little what was mentioned above!

Part 1. All About Choosing Adhesive Woven Interlining – What You Need to Know? (type of adhesive coated fabric)

DUBLERIN

Any fabric can serve as the basis for this texture. From ordinary gauze to thickened cotton fabrics, knitted fabrics, stretch knitwear. There are also dublerin slightly fluffy, with the presence of a light pile, capable of giving attractive curvy, puffy shapes to finished products. The very name “dublerin” comes from the fact that the material is duplicated, which means the application of an adhesive composition on one side of the surface.

The adhesive layer is applied in dotted or continuous film. The first application method has two characteristics:
– The adhesive composition is applied in the form of small dots in size no more than semolina;
– The splash is slightly larger in size, not exceeding boiled millet.
The continuous adhesive coat is applied in the form of a thin, slightly glossy film.

Dublerin is produced in a width of 80 – 150 cm, which directly depends on the type of fabric used for the base and the application of the glue layer.
When placing the material, the direction of the share threads must be taken into account, as for each type of fabric.

What are the benefits of dublerin? Similar to good fabric, the texture drapes perfectly, does not form tears and hard folds after turning out the elements as it is observed with non-woven fabric, but we will talk about this material further.Dublerin is more durable and durable.

What are the negative qualities of doublerin? In my opinion, there is only one thing, a more expensive texture, since this material is based on fabric. What are the properties of dublerin of different density and different adhesive layer? This should be dealt with in detail. To this end, you can consider examples with opposite qualities in order to understand the principle and logic of comparison.

Imagine the texture of very dense cotton fabrics with adhesive applied in the form of a film. When you take such a dublerin in your hands, you feel the subtle texture of real plastic. Undoubtedly, when using such a material, the fabric is not inferior in rigidity to real plywood. This type of doublerin is widely used for men’s shirt collars. Therefore, it is no coincidence that it is called collar. When bending, the material does not want to bend and you have to use pins.
Another common example in practice is the thinnest gauze with a dotted type of adhesive coating. This kind of doublerin on gauze is able to bend easily under its weight. It is used for sewing fashionable cotton blouses. As another example, you can select a monoelastic with a spot adhesive coating. It is a popular cushioning material for stretch yarn fabrics as well as stretch knitwear.

Tip: Feel the dublerin, decide on the criteria, as a last resort, buy a small piece and test the material, and then it’s worth buying a large piece. To make the picture more complete, it is also worth noting the properties of the glue border. This material is not a doubler, it is a specially designed texture that is used in sewing men’s clothing and jackets. I believe that it is also suitable for sealing individual elements of bags, shoppers, backpacks and other products.

In addition, non-adhesive beads are also used in practice.
Therefore, before buying adhesive cushioning materials, you should decide on the main selection criteria:
1. For what fabrics this type of cushioning materials is needed;
2.What is the density of the main material for sewing or needlework;
3. What kind of appearance should be given to the finished product.

Part 2. What is the distinguishing of adhesive interlining materials made on nonwoven backing? (non-woven fabrics with adhesive coating).

Typical representatives of this group of materials are non-woven , spandbond . If you take a closer look, you can note the family ties between them, and, moreover, very close ones.
They are both non-woven structures, that is, they are not fabrics.
The group of non-woven materials is available with an adhesive and non-adhesive texture.
Spandbond refers exclusively to non-adhesive materials.

FLIZELIN

According to the definition of Wikipedia, interlining from the German Vlieseline is a class of paper-like interlining materials of non-woven texture that is made using cellulose fibers, to which polyester fibers can be added. They are produced with different thicknesses and densities, can have the finest weightless texture, and are very dense, not inferior in these qualities to thin cardboard.

Manufacturers produce non-woven fabric with a dotted and continuous adhesive coating. The material width parameters depend on the technological equipment used by the manufacturer, and can be 80, 90, 100 cm. What is the direction of the common thread? There is an opinion that if non-woven fabric does not belong to fabrics, then it can be cut in any position, lengthwise, across, diagonally. However, it is better to stick to the cut “along the length”, the lateral direction can lead to slight stretching of the material.

Tip: In each case, it is better to test the non-woven fabric before buying. To this end, a piece of material is glued to the main textured fabric and they see how the resulting texture looks like, what density the finished product will be. Only then can you buy a large cut.

FLIZELIN thread-stitched.

This type of non-woven fabric has a quilted seam for strength on the machine, which is why it is called that. It occupies an intermediate link in the chain between dublerin and non-woven fabric. I believe that such a technology is capable of providing increased strength, the ability to drape, because, like a paper surface, it easily breaks and wrinkles.

In terms of its properties, this type of non-woven fabric is closer to dublenins, with good drapery and the absence of fractures when folded, and in terms of cost it belongs to its group.Depending on the method of applying the adhesive layer, a point and continuous method are distinguished. The width parameters of this non-woven fabric directly depend on the technological lines used, and reach from 80 to 100 cm.

What are the advantages of non-woven fabric over other materials? It is cheaper than a traditional dublenine, and in my opinion, this is the main plus of non-woven fabric.
It should be noted separately special types of interlining, designed for patchwork, quilting with ready-made markings. It is more expensive than similar offers, not for special purposes. However, this is my personal opinion, in fact, the difference is only in marking and conducting large-scale promotions. If there are other opinions, I will listen to them with pleasure.

What negative qualities are seen in non-woven? In my opinion, there are more than enough of them. First of all, the delicate texture is characterized by a flimsy and unreliable texture that tears, it seems, from the very touch, similar to napkins. On the contrary, thick non-woven fabric is very dense and tough, and in its qualities resembles plywood. And in general, non-woven fabric can easily break in case of bending of parts, when twisting, form folds, it easily wrinkles like a crumpled sheet of paper.

An equally important disadvantage of non-woven fabric can be a fluffy surface that forms after wearing and washing in the absence of a lining fabric. The fluffy and disheveled texture quickly loses its practical qualities. However, this is also my subjective opinion and I would like to listen to the fans of this material.
What are the qualities of non-woven fabric with different densities and methods of adhesive coating? The selection of a suitable material density is carried out in the same way as the selection of dublerin. Preferring a dense texture, we get a fabric with the properties of plywood. By picking up a thin material, you can combine the fineness and strength of the finished product.
Advice: in the absence of a doubler at hand, this type of interlining is often used. And vice versa, if you need a thread-stitched interlining, you can use a doubler, these materials are considered interchangeable.

What properties does a non-woven edge with a thread-stitching and plain texture have?

Adhesive and non-adhesive. In accordance with the manufacturing technology and the outer surface, the edging and non-woven fabric are similar materials. Only, unlike the canvas, the edge is designed for individual parts and elements, it strengthens well those parts in clothes that are more than others exposed to different loads. An example would be the edges of the sides and lapels, at the bottom and top of the products, and other elements. Other interlining also differ in non-woven texture, these include adhesive corsage tape and synthetic winterizer.

What is the difference between an adhesive bodice tape?

In accordance with the purpose, the corsage tape is designed for the tightness of the belt when sewing trousers. Online stores offer products of different widths and types. Are you tired yet? In this case, let’s continue. There are 2 more popular types of universal cushioning material with an adhesive texture that differ in non-woven texture. The stitched edge is a strip of non-woven fabric measuring 1-4 cm in width with a stitched elastic and durable texture.

Manufacturers produce a stitching edge with a special soutache cord that provides excellent strength. Available in simple non-woven edges without or with soutache edging and reinforced stitching.
Tip: if you do not have the necessary adhesive edge at hand, you can simply prepare strips of non-woven and dublerin.

GLUE SYNTHEPON.

This highly sought-after material resembles a regular material, but with a less subtle puffy texture. In my opinion, it is only produced with a dotted and solid coating.
Part 3.

The common point for all mentioned adhesive cushions is the application of adhesive coatings on one side.
However, there is a bulky group of interlining products literally woven and bonded from adhesive fibers. They differ in different thicknesses and are called a cobweb, which resembles a natural cobweb that spiders weave during the warm season. The mesh made from thicker fibers has a larger texture. They cannot be made like real textured fabrics, but are produced by chemical plants.

GLUE WEBS, NETS, FLIZOFIX.

A unique feature of openwork cobwebs is the presence of glue on each side of the fibers, they themselves consist of an adhesive composition. Therefore, it is important to properly glue the cobweb so that you do not accidentally attach one side to the surface of the iron.

Cobwebs are used for especially thin materials, they are placed on dress fabrics, thin cotton, satin.
Unlike delicate cobwebs, glue nets are distinguished by greater rigidity, which can be determined by touch in a regular store. They have a denser texture and are well suited for suiting fabrics, in them the mesh is not noticeable and is not printed.

FLIZOFIX.

In accordance with the definition of Wikipedia, flizofix comes from the German word Vliesofix, and is the texture of 2-sided adhesive sheets. Its texture resembles a glue mesh edge. In contrast to the mesh structure, it is produced in the form of a web, not an edge, and is made with a maximum width of 90 cm.Like attaching the edge in the form of a mesh, the flisofix can be purchased in the form of a web fastened on one side to a paper surface.

Tip: The presented edges, as well as non-woven fabrics, are used not only for sewing clothes, but are excellent for gluing appliqués, on which elements can be seated before stitching.

Part 4.

What are the specialty cushioning materials?
These include spunbond, emit water-soluble, heat-soluble cushion textures.

SPANBOND .

In accordance with the definition from Wikipedia, spunbond from English means a technology by which nonwovens are produced from a molten polymer using the spunbond method.

In fact, this method is the following:
– The molten polymer is passed through special dies with the formation of continuous thin filaments, which, under the influence of air, are drawn and placed on a moving conveyor belt. This is how canvases from bonded threads appear.
– Depending on the fastening technology of the obtained polymer fibers, the type and quality of the material, as well as the area of application, are determined.
– It should be noted that spunbond is not available with a ready-made adhesive coating.
– It differs in its dense texture, while only a few grams of polymer is required to make meters of canvases.

Spunbond is produced in a wide range of colors and all kinds of shades.Due to its increased strength, spunbond is suitable for cushioning materials and is used in the manufacture of bags, backpacks. This material serves as an excellent raw material for the production of disposable promotional items.
I am opening an important secret! The material is widely known in our country and is used under a different name. These are coverings. Yes, this is the same spunbond, but with less thickness and density. Black and other spunbond colors can be used to easily make lining pockets.

Water- and heat-soluble types of interlining interlining. Where are these auxiliary materials used?

As a complete information, it is worth mentioning the group of water and heat-soluble non-woven materials. These are non-woven interlining textures designed for good fixation of the fabric when sewing. After the manufacture of products, it is worthwhile to carry out a hot iron or wash the product and this cushioning material disappears. Non-wovens, soluble in water and disappearing during ironing, are widely used in quilting, patchwork, and complex machine embroidery. For example, a similar work with a water-soluble interlining is shown in the picture.

Quality and long service life are the main selection criteria for this range. The development of technologies in the textile, chemical industry, and the production of artificial materials makes it possible to create cushioning materials of amazing quality with unusual properties. Delightful qualities do not go unnoticed in a wide circle of sewing specialists and various types of handicrafts, these textures are used in fashion ateliers, sewing production associations, for home sewing.

However, in the application of this large assortment, there are some exceptions to the rules that must be taken into account when using. At the same time, special attention is paid to the appropriate selection and methods of application, the appropriate type of pad for sewing various products. These questions will be the topic for a separate publication in a series of articles that make it easier to choose in such a rich assortment of cushioning materials. This information will be useful for the daily work of seamstresses, needlewomen, milliners and is intended to solve all problems with the choice of materials used in sewing, different types of needlework.

How to use glue tape or cobweb correctly and glue fabrics together with an iron?

Modern materials used in sewing business greatly facilitate the work of tailors and improve the quality of sewn products. Glue, adhesive tapes and webs for fabric are indispensable for sewing, repairing clothes and in various types of handicrafts. What are they? What are their varieties? How to use them correctly?

When is it necessary to glue fabrics rather than sewing together?

Adhesives are used when it is necessary to fasten textile parts without seams. Also, the need for gluing fabrics often arises when sewing, repairing clothes, creating crafts and toys, applying patches, applications and decor to fabrics, performing work in patchwork, quilting, decoupage, scrapbooking techniques. Adhesive materials are indispensable for joining parts made of difficult-to-process, thin and loose fabrics. They are often used for hemming trousers and skirts, and are especially appreciated by those who do not sew often.

Bonding of two layers of fabric with adhesive tapes and spider webs is often used in sewing clothes, especially shirts, jackets and coats. These materials are used as cushioning materials, which allows you to increase the density and rigidity of individual parts – necks, straps, collars, cuffs, armholes. They also fix and protect seams and cuts from stretch marks, which is especially important when processing knitwear and other elastic fabrics. Thanks to this, sewn items become more durable and better retain their shape when washed.

Adhesive tape and cobweb

Among the adhesives, the most popular and convenient to use are adhesive tape and cobweb. With their help, you can hem the edges, strengthen the seams, glue the fabric to give density to some elements, repair the product without applying patches. This will take a minimum of time and effort. To glue the fabric with them, you only need an iron.

What is it?

An adhesive web is a thin translucent nonwoven fabric made of polyamide fibers, which melt when heated and firmly connect the fabric layers to each other. It is produced in the form of strips 0.5–5 cm wide or solid sheets, rolled into rolls, which can have various sizes (5–70 mm) and thicknesses (0.17–0.2 mm).

Adhesive tapes and cobwebs are single-sided and double-sided. The former contain an adhesive on only one side; these are usually used to seal parts, fix and strengthen seams. The latter are used for gluing two layers of matter.

Sometimes the adhesive web is applied to a paper backing with a mesh structure. It is convenient to work with such tapes – they can be easily laid out on the fabric and glued in the right place. They are also used to work with elastic materials, since they tend to stretch.

How to use?

Adhesive tape or spider web is placed between two layers of fabric and ironed for a few seconds. The size of the spider web must match the size of the fabric. An adhesive spider web on a paper basis is applied to the seamy side of the canvas and ironed on. Then the paper is peeled off, another layer of fabric or detail is applied on top of the wrong side and ironed. If the gluing is not strong enough, the iron is reused, setting a higher temperature (but not higher than that allowed for the type of fabric used) and sprinkling the product with water.

Adhesive tapes and cobwebs are not used for gluing very thin or, conversely, dense fleecy fabrics such as flock, velvet, velveteen. Using them when working with expensive materials in the absence of sufficient experience should also not be due to the risk of damage. These adhesives are often used to secure lace. Despite the fact that lace requires additional sewing by hand or on a typewriter, it is much more convenient to work with an already fixed openwork detail.

Glue spider web or tape is glued, positioning 0.5 cm above the fold line.No one is immune from mistakes, so sometimes it becomes necessary to remove the excess or the entire sticky layer. This is done in the following ways:

  • Steam the junction. Steam treatment is carried out for 2 minutes, usually after that the glue is easily removed from the surface.
  • Use alcohol. The liquid is applied to a cotton pad and moisten the problem area.
  • Take an unnecessary piece of fabric, attach it to the sticky layer and iron it with steam, the glue will stick to the new fabric.

Use of glue for fabric: varieties, composition and method of application

You can glue the fabric not only with an adhesive spider web or tape, but also with a special textile glue that does not leave marks. Manufacturers offer a wide range of adhesives with different compositions. The selection of glue should be carried out taking into account the type of fabric and the conditions in which the finished product will be used, therefore, before use, it is imperative to read the information on the package.

Rubber-based adhesive

Rubber-based adhesive is a solution of rubber or its mixtures and synthetic resin in a solvent. It has great elasticity and resistance to low and high temperatures. Suitable for working with dense fabrics, adheres well to fabric and leather. After application, the glue based on natural rubber remains in a liquid state for several hours, so it is suitable for joining large parts – at any time you can straighten the fabric and smooth out the wrinkles. It is applied to the fabric, allowed to dry a little, apply another layer of fabric or part and press.

Perchlorovinyl glue

Perchlorovinyl glue is a solution of perchlorovinyl resin in organic solvents. It is moisture resistant, oil and gasoline resistant. Suitable for gluing materials of different composition – fabrics, leather, rubber. Operating temperature range – from -20 to +100 degrees. It is widely used in the shoe industry. The glue is applied in 2 layers with a break of 10 minutes, then the surfaces to be glued are pressed and left under load for 2 days.

Transparent glue in the form of a liquid thread

Glue in the form of a liquid thread can quickly glue various materials, therefore it is widely used for creating appliqués, gluing decor, patches, lace. The glue is applied evenly with a thin layer on the surface of the fabric, after a minute, the detail that needs fixing is applied and pressed firmly for 10-15 seconds. If a thick fabric is glued, it is additionally ironed with an iron.

Nitrocellulose glue

Nitrocellulose glue is a solution of nitrocellulose in organic solvents.Has increased flammability. It provides a tight connection that is not afraid of moisture, sunlight, detergents. Possesses high efficiency when gluing fabrics and leather, therefore it is often used in the manufacture of shoes. The composition is applied to both surfaces, which are immediately connected and placed under the load.

Polyvinyl acetate glue

PVA is a non-toxic universal glue, suitable for gluing many materials, including fabrics. Stationery is not used for textiles. The “SuperPVA” and PVA-MB (universal) varieties work best with matter. The glue is water-soluble, so if you plan to wet and wash the product, it is better to refuse in favor of another, waterproof one.

Homemade glue

Homemade glue:

Dextrin

  • Dextrin glue. At 2 st. l. dextrin take 5 tbsp. l. cold water and heated to a warm state, after which 1 tbsp. l. glycerin. The composition can be prepared from starch, but this will take longer. The powder is placed in a porcelain or enamel dish and placed in the oven for 2 hours, setting the temperature to 160 ° C. After this time, the starch will turn into dextrin, from which the glue is prepared as described above.
  • Casein glue. The main component is casein milk protein. You can prepare a composition based on it as follows: 1 part of casein powder is placed in a container and 2 parts of water are added, pouring it in with a thin stream and stirring thoroughly. The glue must be used within 1–2 hours. It is not afraid of moisture, it adheres well to fabric, wood, leather, ceramics.

Can I wash items that are glued together?

The washing ability of the garment with glued fabrics depends on the adhesive composition. Adhesive tape and cobweb are not very resistant to moisture and high temperatures, therefore, after several washes, they often begin to peel off.

The special fabric adhesive is resistant to water, powders and other detergents, but the manufacturer’s instructions should be consulted before purchasing and using it.The things in the manufacture of which such gluing was used can usually be washed, but this should not be done within the first 3 days after gluing – the composition must be completely fixed.

How to properly glue the edge to the countertop with your own hands at home

Furniture manufacturers use different materials to protect the ends of products. The edge for the table top is fixed at the last stage of the assembly of the furniture structures.Without this part, the ends of the chipboard, chipboard will quickly become unusable, since it is not a moisture-resistant material. Consider all options for furniture edges, the way they are installed. Below will be instructions on how to update the countertop at home.

Why furniture is trimmed

In addition to its beautiful appearance, the edge is applied to furniture for the following purposes:

  • Protection against moisture.
When wet, chipboard quickly swells, loses its shape and strength. The sidewall prevents the penetration of moisture and dirt from the side of the ends. This is true for the kitchen, dining room, bathroom.
  • Protection against mold and insects.
The porous surface of the boards is a good breeding ground for microorganisms. They destroy the structure of the material. If you stick a protective film on the edge, then the service life of wooden products will increase.
  • Fight against harmful vapors.
Formaldehyde is used in the production of chipboard. Its vapors can penetrate through uncovered end sections. The tape helps block harmful fumes.

An additionally glued border allows you to avoid puffs and injuries on clothes. Sawed-off pieces of the slab are sharp, often spoil clothes, and you can easily injure yourself. They are especially unsafe for the children’s room and kitchen. Therefore, it is essential to close the countertop without fail.

TIP!
Depending on the selected edge material, you need to glue the material with an iron with a special temperature regime. As a result, the base will adhere firmly to the worktop without bubbles.

Where to make an edge

Furniture manufacturers often process furniture from visible areas of end surfaces. This allows you to reduce the production costs of the headset. This approach can turn into problems. The edge should be glued on all sides.

If you bought wooden products with unprotected ends, then you can repair the tabletop on your own.To do this, you will need a regular iron or a hair dryer. The process of renewing the countertop in the kitchen will take a few minutes. But this will extend the life of the headset.

Varieties of furniture edges

The most popular material for the production of furniture from the budget series is chipboard. The disadvantage of the slabs is the non-aesthetic edges that appear after the part has been cut. They will be hidden by the furniture edge. They make it from various materials. Some of them are fixed with glue, others have a glueless composition.

Board made of paper or melamine

The most inexpensive option is melamine-impregnated paper tapes. To do this, use paper of increased strength, impregnate it with melamine and glue papyrus paper. Use 2-layer and single-layer papyrus.

To prevent the melamine coating from rubbing off, varnish is applied on top.On the back of the side there is glue. In order to glue the edge on the chipboard, you need to warm up the composition, press the border well against the countertop. The thickness of the tape is 0.2-0.4 mm. The material is resistant to bending, but is afraid of moisture.

The service life of the melamine edging is short, even with respect. It is better to use a side on surfaces that are not subject to stress – on the back of countertops, shelves.

TIP!
You can get rid of the remnants of the edge with a sharp knife. The ends should be cut first. Be careful not to damage the corners of the furniture. The direction of the knife should be towards the inside of the part.

Polyvinyl chloride

The front part of the edge can be smooth plain or textured – with imitation of wood. It comes in a variety of sizes. The thickness of the products is 0.4-2 mm, the width is 19-54 mm. Thicker sides are used for the outer ends, and thin ones for processing the cuts on the back of the furniture.

Properties of PVC tape:

  • Mechanical resistance.
  • Chemical neutrality.
  • Protection against moisture.
  • Elasticity. Curved surfaces can be easily processed.

The gluing of the material is carried out both in production and at home. There is material with and without adhesive. Both can be glued at home. The disadvantages of the PVC sideboard include – temperature conditions (from -5 ° C to + 45 ° C).Therefore, it is undesirable to update the kitchen countertop outdoors during the cold season. When working with the iron, be careful not to melt the polymer compound.

ABS plastic

The tape does not contain heavy metals, has high strength and long service life. The material is resistant to low, high temperatures. Any glue with any melting point can be used during the restoration of the countertop. It should be remembered that there is a slight shrinkage during processing – 0.3%.The disadvantages of the polymer include the high price. The border for the ends is produced in glossy, matte or semi-glossy. There are options that mimic the texture of wood.

Veneer

This is a thin cut of wood, which is painted in different colors, molded in the form of a tape. The material is expensive and requires skills to work with it. A veneer edge is often used in manufacturing to process furniture cuts. The advantages include the environmental friendliness of the material.

3D acrylic edging

They also produce a border of transparent acrylic. The front part can be printed. Above is a layer of polymer, which will give the strip bulk.

The most popular manufacturers of edging tapes are Tilit, Energofloor, Uponor, Viega fonterra, Teploflex.

TIP!
After ironing the tape with an iron, you can start trimming and processing the protruding edge with a file or sandpaper.

Profiles instead of furniture edges

Closing the countertop in the kitchen can be done with more than just tape. There are also furniture profiles that are mechanically attached to the products.

Profiles are produced in two sections:

  • T-shaped

It is rarely used in large industries, but it is available for sale. It is a durable material, unlike the furniture edges above. The material has a large thickness and a solid base. The side is usually made of laminated chipboard. Available in widths of 16 m and 18 mm, and wider models.

A groove is milled under the T-shaped profiles in the end face to be machined. A side is hammered into it with a rubber mallet. The edges of the furniture are cut at a 45º angle to make the corner look nice, and sanded with sandpaper. These edges are made from PVC or aluminum.

  • U-shaped (C-shaped)

This is an inflexible chipboard tape that is put on the sawn part of the board and is attached with liquid nails. The disadvantages include appearance. The tape protrudes a couple of millimeters beyond the countertop. This increases its size. Dirt builds up on the ledges.

Profiles are soft and hard. The latter are worse to bend, so it is difficult to handle curved edges with them. But the strip has great strength. If you need to close up a kitchen countertop with a rigid U-shaped profile, then it is preheated with a construction hairdryer. Then you need to give the material the desired shape. Next, the side is fixed with masking tape until the glue dries.

Tools for the job

There is no need to invite specialists to glue the edge banding tape. Everything can be done on your own.

Prepare the following tools in advance:

  • Sandpaper.
  • Rubber roller.
  • Iron or hair dryer.
  • File.
  • Scissors.
  • Felt.
  • Heavy gloves.
  • Sponge for removing glue residues.

If you adhere to the rules, then the processing of the ends will be neat (without scratches, minor defects and glue residues). You can use a utility knife instead of scissors to trim off excess tape. It is easy to glue the material with an iron. But it is better to use a special construction hair dryer. It has a heating temperature up to 250º.As a result, the glue quickly melts, and when solidified, it adheres tenaciously to the surface of the furniture.

TIP!
If the edging tape has come off the surface of the furniture, use a hot iron. Otherwise, replace the old side with a new one.

Preparatory work

It is important to prepare the work surface of the worktop before gluing the edging tape.To do this, clean the ends of the plate. The surface should be free of sawdust, “burrs” and other defects.

If you do not perform site preparation before repair, the edge will not adhere well. The adhesion of the material to the table should be maximized. Use a wood cutting machine to keep the end of your furniture looking perfectly straight.

How to glue the edge on the chipboard at home

You can update a kitchen countertop with your own hands only with melamine tape or a U-shaped PVC edging.Consider the technology of how to glue edge tape at home. This tip will help you decorate new or restore old furniture.

Instructions for action:

  1. Unwind the roll of melamine border.
  2. We apply the material to the end of the countertop.
  3. We mark the length of the tape with a slight increase in trimming.
  4. We apply a side, which we align along one edge.
  5. Iron the product with an iron in small sections of 10 cm.
  6. Next, roll with a roller or rub the heated areas with felt.

The edgebanding process is complete. The tape can be used to cover the edges of worktops of different configurations.

Removing the seam when trimming the paper edge

The melamine flat is composed of paper. A white seam will certainly appear if you cut off part of the material. To remove the defect, use a special stain. The product is absorbed into the side, it becomes a uniform color with it.For each chipboard board, a specific color is selected. If you want to paint the border in the shade “cherry”, then take a stain of color “mahogany”.

TIP!
There are water-based stains on sale. If you rub a fresh cut with the composition, then its color will change.

Use a thick-bladed knife to make the seam less visible (a boot knife will work as well). It should be held at a 40 ° angle. In hardware stores, there is a special device for trimming strips.

How to remove excess edge

If it was not possible to glue the self-adhesive tape the first time, then the procedure can be repeated again. To do this, glue is applied to the end section, and then the profile is pressed down with your hands.

The width of the PVC side is usually taken with a margin, so it is important to remove excess material around the edges. To do this, take a clerical knife or file. The edge is taken with both hands, pressed with a knife along the edges on the protruding fragment. Excess parts break off. There remains a strip that coincides in width with the end. All irregularities after work are processed with sandpaper.

TIP!
The presence of micro-gaps between the U-profile and the chipboard surface does not allow it to be glued in the kitchen and bathroom. Therefore, this material is used for processing office furniture.

Tips for Processing Countertops with Adhesive Edging Tape

The border should be attached to the work surface.Using an iron, a building hair dryer, you need to warm up the tape, and then press it tightly against the tabletop. For convenience, you can partially warm the side, in 20 cm segments. Keep the temperature of the hair dryer at 250º. The adhesive melts quickly under the influence of the hot air flow.

Other recommendations for gluing the edge with your own hands:

  • To understand that the adhesive has completely softened, you should look at the condition of the edge. If it has ceased to be bent, straightened, then the workpiece can be used.Click on the end of the strip so that it fully adheres to the base.
  • Do not forget about safety precautions. We put on gloves during work, as the edge gets very hot during the repair process. The hairdryer should not be directed at your hands and face, otherwise you may get burned. We work carefully.
  • We glue the edge on the chipboard in a heated room. Then the glue will harden more slowly. There is time to correct any inaccuracies on the tape.
  • Melamine rim adheres better to the end of the countertop if it is heated in 20 cm segments. While the glue cures, defects can be quickly repaired.
  • If you need to glue a 60cm edging, then divide the work into 3 stages. First, the initial segment is glued, then the middle one. At the end – the rest of the tape.
  • When the surface of the side board cools, it is important to ensure that it does not swell. The strip must not move during polymerization.

Some people at home use an iron to process the edge with their own hands. Professionals advise against doing this. There is a risk of spoiling the technique, as the glue spreads outside the tape when heated.

Attaching ABS piping

Plastic sides can be fixed to the edge of the furniture (in the grooves), but this is an unreliable design. Better to fix the ABS edging with glue. To mount the T-shaped profile, a recess should be made along the end to be machined.

This can be done using a milling machine. If you have a little building experience, then all the manipulations can be carried out using a drill with a circular nozzle.

When working with a border, it is important to calculate the sequence of work in order to avoid seams. The corners should be bent around the profile so that they are rounded. If we are dealing with ordinary corners, then the thick polymer will not go around them, and the melamine rim will break. In this case, we make joints. After gluing the edging tape, the ends must be sanded to remove irregularities from the surface.

TIP!
You can check the quality of grinding the ends by hand.Run your fingers along the edge of the part, if you feel any roughness, work again with sandpaper.

Do-it-yourself glue for updating countertops in the kitchen

Furniture factories use special hot melt adhesives for tape to glue the edge to the countertop. It is convenient when production is on stream, the quality of the result and speed are important. The formulations are thermoplastics. When products are heated, they become elastic, and when cooled, they quickly harden.

Such properties to the sides are provided by ethylene with vinyl acetate included in the glue. For the manufacture of decor, special equipment is used (hand pistols or machines), which help to apply the adhesive to the edge.

In domestic conditions, ordinary PVC glue can be used to restore the countertop. It adheres well to paper materials to different surfaces, but is afraid of moisture. To work with the composition, no additional equipment is needed.

To repair the chipboard countertops, you can use ordinary glue “Moment” or “88-lux”. They will firmly fix the material at the ends. After 3-4 hours the worktop can be used. The formulations are safe, affordable, and have a low price.

Professional – Kleiberit. The company produces special hot-melt adhesives for cladding. During the repair, the soft-forming method is used (if the ends have a relief structure).

To fix the material, you can watch a video that shows a simple way of gluing a strip to a chipboard tabletop using a clerical knife and an iron.
