You’ve got a big test and you really need to do some studying. You head over to your favorite coffee shop, get an oversized cup of high-octane coffee, open up your book …

… and immediately get distracted.

You put on headphones and your favorite music but quickly find yourself grooving to thumping bass rather than focusing on your big test.

Or, let’s say you’re taking an online study course and also have small kids at home. As much as you love your kids, you need a space where you can get away from the noise for a bit and actually focus on knocking out this test.

Clearly, you need a dedicated study space where you can do some serious work.

Believe it or not, you don’t need to be an eccentric millionaire living in a castle on a cliff to have your own spot for studying. You can easily create one in your house or apartment as long as you follow a few simple guidelines when creating the space.

YOUR STUDY SPACE SHOULD BE QUIET AND DISTRACTION FREE

In his book “The Essays of Ralph Waldo Emerson,” Emerson wrote:

At times the whole world seems to be in conspiracy to importune you with emphatic trifles. Friend, client, child, sickness, fear, want, charity, all knock at once at thy closet door and say,—’Come out unto us.’ But keep thy state; come not into their confusion.

Okay, that may be a bit on the extreme side, but you get the point. There are a LOT of distractions out there.

First and foremost, you want your study spot to be quiet and free from distractions. This should be obvious, but these days, it’s pretty common to study in loud places with lots of background noise.

Or, many people will blast music or put on a movie in the background to “distract” them from the overwhelming quiet. They feel that having something happening in the background actually helps them focus. After all, nothing like “X-Men II” to put you in a calm, peaceful state of mind, right?

But what most people don’t realize is that a quiet, undistracted place really is the most productive when it comes to studying. Writing in Scientific American, Mark Andrews says:

Several studies have indicated that stress resulting from ongoing white noise can induce the release of cortisol, a hormone that helps to restore homeostasis in the body after a bad experience. Excess cortisol impairs function in the prefrontal cortex—an emotional learning center that helps to regulate “executive” functions such as planning, reasoning and impulse control. Some recent evidence indicates that the prefrontal cortex also stores short-term memories. Changes to this region, therefore, may disrupt a person’s capacity to think clearly and to retain information.

This means that, ideally, your study spot should be peaceful and free from noise. Your phone and email should not be buzzing, and you may want to consider using a white noise generator to create a pleasant background noise. Alternatively, you could run a fan to create the same time of background noise.

There have been studies that have shown that a little classical music in the background can be helpful, so don’t be afraid to gently pipe some Chopin through your stereo.

There are certainly times when it’s appropriate to study in a coffee shop or with your favorite tunes bumping in the background, but for the crucial sessions, keep it quiet. Have the dance party when you’re done studying.

YOUR STUDY SPACE SHOULD BE COMFORTABLE

This should be obvious, but your study space needs to be comfortable. If you’re going to be spending long hours with the books, you need to treat your body right. The temperature in the room should be cool, but not so cold that you’re shivering, and warm without putting you to sleep.

Purchase a comfortable chair that will give you adequate lumbar support and a desk that you can sit at comfortably. You may even want to set up a standing desk, which can save your back if you’re going to be hunched over for hours.

If you’re a fitness buff, you could try a treadmill desk, but that might be a little extreme.

Your goal is to create an environment that you will enjoy being in for an extended period of time. If your study room feels like a solitary confinement cell in Alcatraz, you’re really going to hate studying.

YOUR STUDY SPACE SHOULD BE WELL ORGANIZED

You don’t want your study spot to look like a scene out of “Hoarders. ” Everything around you should be well-organized and easy to find. Having notes scattered everywhere may give you that cool, “Beautiful Mind” feel, but it will kill your studying.

At the risk of sounding extraordinarily nerdy, we recommend keeping pens and pencils held together neatly, papers filed in appropriate folders, and study cards in the right stacks. If you’re a Post-It kind of person, stick all your notes on a piece of poster board.

Also think about organizing your digital files. You don’t want to lose a crucial paper or chart during finals. If you’re having trouble organizing things, consider using one of the following solutions:

These systems allow you to search for items, both by the name of the file and by words within the files themselves. Evernote can even handle OCR (optical character recognition), meaning you can put snapshots of handwritten notes in.

YOUR STUDY SPACE SHOULD BE PLEASANT

Not only should your space be comfortable, it should be pleasant. In other words, you should create a space that you simply enjoy being in. This will dramatically enhance the studying experience.

There are endless ways to customize your space. You can use candles or essential oil diffusers to add a pleasant aroma to the air. If you have dream of being a wealthy billionaire and literally rolling around in piles of money, there is actually a candle that smells like money!

Tasteful lighting can add a nice ambience to the room. Grab a few floor lamps or desk lamps and get rid of all the harsh, interrogation room lighting.

Don’t be afraid to add your own little touches. Are you a diehard Braveheart fan? Hang posters all over the walls. Do you have a weird obsession with Beethoven busts? Have him accompany you during your studies.

As mentioned above, you can also add pleasant background noise to drown out distractions. There are hundreds of apps and devices that create peaceful noises. If you want it to feel like you’re studying at the beach in a rainstorm, you can make that happen.

This is your opportunity to flex your creativity. Make a space that you actually enjoy spending time in. A space that you don’t dread. The more pleasant associations you have with studying, the more you’ll actually want to study.

YOUR STUDY SPACE SHOULD ALLOW YOU TO KEEP ON SCHEDULE

This requires a bit of explaining. The most effective studying happens on a very rigorous schedule. In other words, you know when you’re going to start and end, as well as when you’ll take breaks. Maintaining a schedule allows you to focus as well as providing you a sense of how much longer you need to study.

To take things even further, individuals who study best are those who break down their overall study time into blocks. Many people use what is called the “Pomodoro” method to focus for short bursts and then they take a short mental break.

For example, working according to the Pomodoro method, you could study for 25 minutes, then take a 5 minute break, then study again for 25 minutes. After 3 or so study sessions, you take a longer break of 15 or 20 minutes. Breaking up your sessions in this way allows you to laser focus for short amounts of time, supercharging your studying.

Writing about the Pomodoro Technique, S.J. Scott says:

In theory, this strategy works because you completely focus on one task (like writing) without shifting focus or multitasking. When the clock is ticking, you ignore the urge to check email, hop on Facebook, answer text messages or do any other distracting activity. You’re in the zone and completely focused.

To study in such a fashion, you need a simple time keep device in your study space, like an alarm clock or timer. It doesn’t need to be anything elaborate; just something that will let you know when to start and stop.

In addition to creating a schedule, you should also focus on studying during your prime time. This means studying when you are freshest and most able to focus. If you work best in the morning, that’s when you should be doing the bulk of your studying. Focusing on your prime time will double or even triple your efficiency, allowing you to remember more in less time.

CREATING RULES FOR YOUR STUDY SPACE

To make your study space most effective, you should create a series of rules that are in effect within that space. These rules aren’t designed to ruin all the fun but simply to make the most of your time. These rules could include:

  • No mobile phones.
  • No checking email or social media.
  • No snacking except during designated break times.

This may sound a little silly, but you could even put a, “Do Not Disturb,” sign on the door to inform people that you are deep into an important session.

Jim Rohn said, “Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment.” Freedom ultimately comes through discipline, and implementing these rules is one way to create that freedom you need.

ENJOY YOUR SPACE

Due to space or budget restrictions, you may not be able to create the spot of your dreams, complete with a plush leather chair, tasteful art on the walls and a high-end sound system. After all, this is a study space, not a man cave or something from Pinterest.

But, by implementing just a few of these rules, you can turn even the most drab, boring location into a place you actually want to go.

7 Ways To Create A Cozy Study Space In Your Apartment

One of the most exciting parts of entering college is moving out on your own. No parents mean more freedom — but it also means more responsibility. Did you know that the average college student spends nearly 20 hours per week studying? If you want to make the most of this time, you need to create a dedicated study space. Somewhere quiet, comfortable, and free from distractions.

While that’s not always possible, this article offers tips and tricks for designing an apartment space that’s study-friendly.

Location, Location, Location

Before we get into the meat of designing the interior of your apartment, it’s important to pick a desirable location. 

College students want to be where the action is. But if you’re planning to study hard and graduate on time, you need to balance your social life and schoolwork.

That’s why you want to choose a picturesque area that’s close enough to public transportation and activity, but far enough away that you can concentrate when you need to.

Find an apartment that’s nearby your university so that you’re not commuting too far. An apartment within walking or biking distance is ideal!

Many college students living in the city ditch their vehicles for less expensive, more eco-friendly ways of getting around. While studying is important, college life is an entire experience.

That’s why choosing an apartment near trendy restaurants and bars is as important as finding one near cultural museums and gorgeous parks.

If space is an issue, consider furniture that doubles as something else. For example, a lounge chair that you can use for work and relaxation. Portable ergonomic laptop tables can be used on any surface in your apartment!

Do you focus best when you’re really comfortable? Bean bag chairs, hammocks hung from the rafters or even an oversized pillow all make great study spaces. 

Just be sure to have plenty of coffee on hand so you don’t doze mid-study session.

Stay Organized

College living can get chaotic. This is especially true when you’re sharing your space with one or more roommates.

Not everyone shares the same work ethic, personal hygiene, or cleanliness routine. In order to stay on track with your studies, you need to keep your study space organized. 

Most college apartments are on the smaller size, so staying organized can be tricky. But with a little innovation, you’d be surprised at what you can accomplish.

If you’re using an office or corner as your study space, invest in a desk with drawers or plenty of shelves. Here, you can safely store your textbooks, notebooks, laptop, and other study materials.

No room for an oversized desk? No problem!

Hang some shelves on the walls nearby and store your items here. Label makers are college students’ best friend.

Don’t leave important papers or study guides laying around. They can get lost, accidentally thrown out, or ruined.  

Label everything — with either your name, the course you’re taking, or other words and phrases. This helps you remember what’s what and encourages your roommates to keep their hands off your stuff.

Avoid using your desk or chair as a catch-all for your stuff. Store purses, coats, and other items where they belong. The more cluttered your study space is, the less motivated you’ll be to actually use it!

Light It Up!

Straining to see your study notes won’t just give you a headache — it’ll make it pretty difficult to concentrate for long periods of time. Your study space needs adequate lighting. But not just any light will do.

Try to incorporate a mix of natural and artificial lighting for the perfect, inspirational area. What’s the difference?

Natural light (like the sunshine pouring through your open window) is said to keep you alert and lift your spirits! If possible, study near a window, door, or even outside.

Artificial light including lamps and overhead lighting helps you clearly see your notes and study materials. It’s also easier to view your laptop using artificial light vs. natural sunlight. 

Studying when it’s dark out? Artificial light can help here too, guaranteeing you stay alert and focused during your study session. 

Be sure to keep the lights bright. Dim light might encourage you to relax a little too much and cause drowsiness. 

Reduce the Noise

While this isn’t always possible in an apartment, try to reduce the noise around you as much as possible. There are a few ways to do this.

Work Together with Your Roommates

First, ask your roommates to respect your study time. Try studying at the same time every day. This way, your roommates know when to be quiet.

Better yet, see if your roommates want to collectively study together! Not only does this give everyone the peace they need to focus, but you can motivate each other to get your coursework done.

If your roommates aren’t agreeable to this, try studying when they’re not home or on off-hours. Does your roommate hit the gym every day at the same time? Utilize this alone time for studying.

Off-hours might be really early in the morning or late at night. Whenever possible, adjust your study schedule to eliminate distractions.

Noise-Reduction Techniques

Let’s face it. College life is busy — and if you’re sharing an apartment with more than one person, finding quiet time might be a challenge.

If your studies can’t wait, it’s time to hunt for creative ways to block out the noise around you. The easiest and most common way to do this is by using noise-reduction headphones.

These gems make it easy to turn on your favorite music, audiobook, or soothing sounds of nature and block out the world. Do you struggle to study with even music on?

No problem! Try recording your study guide or notes and then play them back to yourself using your headphones. Now, you’re reducing outside noise and reviewing your study material at the same time!

It’s easier to block out noise when you’re using a separate room or study space. While closing the door might not be enough, it will act as a barrier to some distractions.

Add a pedestal fan or sound machine for white noise that overpowers conversations happening in your apartment and other distractions.

The good news is, you only need to use these tips during your study sessions. On the regular, your college apartment should be a reflection of your college life — lively and fun!

Sometimes, Appearance is Everything

Finding the motivation to study is sometimes all in the presentation.

Look around your apartment and the study space you’ve created (or are thinking of creating). Does it inspire you? Is it fun, motivating, and welcoming? If not, you have some major decorating to do!

The good news is, this is the fun part of creating a study-friendly nook in your new apartment. 

Once you decide on your exact study space, you can start the decorating process. You don’t need to spend a fortune to design a creative, productive area. 

If you’re designing a room or small corner, find a desk that’s both comfortable and functional. Remember, you’ll need space for storing books and other materials. Choose a chair that’s comfortable and fits snuggly under the desk to save space.

Your study nook should represent you. Add a flare of personality! You can do this with colorful wall decor, a vision board, picture collages, and even trendy and fun office materials.

When you sit down to study, you should feel happy, at peace, and inspired.

Decorating a smaller area? Consider a bean bag chair or portable study desk. If your study space is in a common area (like the kitchen or living room), it may be difficult to hang decorations.

Instead, bring some of your favorite things into the space (temporarily). Stick Post-Its with encouraging words or phrases onto the edges of your laptop or books.

Does a certain candle smell or essential oil get your creative juices flowing? Place it on the table during your next study session. 

Just keep in mind that you (probably) share this apartment with other people, so be sure to respect their space and preferences as well.

Create an Effective Study Space Quickly and Inexpensively

If you follow me on Instagram (and you should), you’ve seen my less-than-glamorous workspace. I am currently typing this on a folded kitchen table that has served as my desk for the last 10 years. Fancy, it is not. Heck, it’s barely functional.

It is tiny – maybe 2×3. On top, I have one skinny lamp, a picture frame, and a mug with pens. Did I mention that my table-turned-desk doesn’t have any drawers for storage? To make it even better, for most of those 10 years, my desk was shoved into a small corner of my bedroom.

Nevertheless, I wrote trees worth of papers, studied for countless tests, and completed two Masters degrees on this desk. I managed to create a study space that worked for me, in a small space and on a tight budget. (Spoiler alert – new teachers don’t make a lot of money.) By getting creative, you can, too.

How to Create an Effective Study Space

An effective study space is a necessity, a place where you or your teen can work in peace and quiet. That quiet allows the brain to focus on studying.  Study spaces don’t have to be elaborate or expensive. You really only require a few things:

A private or semi-private space.

As an adult, I have the luxury of a private bedroom. However, growing up my room was too small to even put in a desk. I studied in the living room when I was home alone. When other people were home, I retreated to the basement.

The main reason you need your study space to be at least partially private is to get rid of distractions. Trying to study for a test in the middle of the kitchen while surrounded by family is a bad idea.

Think outside of the box –do you have a closet that isn’t really being used? What about a strangely large landing at the top of the stairs? The end of the basement great room? A formal living room that is never used? These are all possible places to set up a small desk and chair. If there is no private space in your house, figure out times when certain rooms are at least quiet.

Side Note: Speaking of distractions, you have a major one in your pocket. In fact, you might be reading this post right now on it! Your phone, my friend. TURN IT OFF when you study!

The constant pinging and buzzing of text messages, Snapchats, and comments on your Insta profile will take your focus away every single time. You can be in the quietest room ever, but if your phone is on, you won’t get work done. Set the phone to airplane mode and get to work. Check it every 30 minutes if you must.

Good lighting

Trying to read a textbook in low light is almost impossible. Low lighting also leads to naps. Even if the space has no natural light (think basement or closet), bring in some lamps!  A girl (or boy or gender neutral person) needs to see.

Comfort

Your space should be comfortable, but not comfortable. (There is a scene in Breaking Bad when Walter is about to meet Saul Goodman, his corrupt ambulance-chasing lawyer, for the first time. Jesse, Walter’s partner-in-crime brings Walt to see Saul. Walter asks, “Why would I want a bad lawyer?” Jesse responds, “You don’t want a bad lawyer. You want a bad lawyer.” I totally thought of that when writing the previous sentence!)

Your bed is a bad place to study – a bed covered with pillows is just an invitation for a nap. Too dang comfy. The couch? Same problem. All you need is a flat surface to write on, a chair that doesn’t kill your back, and the room needs to stay at a decent temperature.

Supplies

If your teacher expects you to draw or color something (Yes, that happens in high school. I assigned that type of homework all the time!), you will waste precious time hunting for markers all around the house. Instead, corral those supplies in your study space.

The dollar store can be your friend for bins and caddies. Or look around your house for boxes or plastic containers to store items. (Don’t underestimate the power of an aluminum can covered with pretty paper.) Supplies to include: filler paper, printer paper, pencils, pens, markers or colored pencils, a pair of scissors, ruler, calculator, and glue.

Keep it Inexpensive

Creating an effective study space doesn’t need to cost a lot of money. In fact, it can be done for free by shopping your own home. Sad desk in the basement that’s never used? It is NOW. The lamp in your sister’s room that she hates? Guess who it belongs to now? You.
