Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common bladder infections to catch, especially for women. Most UTIs are caused by bacteria getting into the urinary tract and causing inflammation and pain. “The female anatomy is a set up for infections of the bladders,” explains Sherry A. Ross, MD, a women’s health expert and author of She-ology: The Definitive Guide to Women’s Intimate Health. Period. Dr. Sherry explains that because women have a shorter urethra, which is essentially the tube that leads urine from the bladder out of the body, bacteria can enter much more easily than it can through male anatomy. In fact, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, women are 30 times more likely to get a UTI than men and more than half of women will have at least one UTI in their lifetime. But as much as knowing you’re not in the minority may be reassuring, it doesn’t take away from the stinging, burning, and needing to rush to the bathroom every 10 minutes feeling you get when you have a bladder infection.

“A true UTI needs antibiotics to clear the bacteria responsible for the symptoms and infection,” Dr. Sherry explains, so call your doctor if you’re experiencing UTI symptoms. While you wait for your appointment, though, there are some home remedies you can try to help relieve some of the discomfort.

Avoid foods and beverages that will irritate your bladder

Drinking coffee and alcohol, and eating spicy food or foods with lots of added sugar will irritate the urinary tract. They can decrease the blood flow to the bladder, which will make it harder for your immune system to fight off the infection.

Drink lots of water and empty your bladder often

According to Chicago-based OB/GYN, Jessica Shepherd, MD, drinking lots of water when you are experiencing UTI symptoms can help flush away the bacteria. “Draining your bladder frequently is essential to getting rid of the bacteria,” Dr. Shepherd explains. The more water you drink, the more you’ll have to relieve yourself.

Use a heating pad

Dr. Shepherd and Dr. Sherry both recommend applying heat to your abdomen for relief from UTI cramps or the burning sensation. “A heating pad or hot water bottle over your lower abdomen can help ease some of the discomfort from a UTI,” Dr. Sherry says. If you’re using an electric heating pad, be careful not to fall asleep with it on or leave it on your skin for long periods of time. This can be dangerous and either burn your skin or worse, cause a fire.

Try an herbal remedy

Recent studies have shown that uva ursi plant extract, also known as bearberry, may help combat UTIs through the plant’s antimicrobial properties. However, there can be side effects, and uva ursi can be harmful if not taken properly, so be sure to consult your doctor before trying the supplement.

Avoid vitamin C if you’re already experiencing UTI symptoms

Vitamin C is known to help prevent UTIs by acidifying the urine, which can kill certain bacteria present in the urinary tract. But Dr. Sherry warns if you already have a UTI or are experiencing real symptoms of one, vitamin C will not be effective in killing off bacteria. This is because unless you know the exact bacteria causing the UTI, vitamin C—although helpful—may not be doing enough to kill the infection you’re experiencing.


How to prevent a UTI from striking again

Sick of dealing with urinary tract infections? Really, the best “natural remedy” is simple: just prevent one from striking in the first place! Here’s how:

Drink cranberry juice

Although it has often been thought of as a treatment option, cranberry juice can only help as a preventative measure. “Cranberry juice can be helpful in preventing UTIs by making the urine more acidic and preventing harmful bacteria from sticking to the walls of the bladder,” Dr. Sherry explains. “An acidic environment in the urine makes bacterial build-up more difficult and reduces your chance of getting a UTI. But even with this information, studies have conflicting evidence about cranberries being a reliable source for prevention.” So if you’re prone to UTIs, it won’t hurt to drink unsweetened cranberry juice. But it’s definitely not the UTI cure-all it has always been thought to be.

Practice good hygiene after sex and ask your partner to, too

“Overall health with increased water intake and exercise is the best way to improve health and help with decreasing UTIs,” Dr. Shepherd shares. This includes good hygiene and being diligent about cleaning all of your lady parts. And make sure your partner does, too. “Bacteria from sexual intercourse is one of the most common ways women can get a UTI,” Dr. Shepherd explains.

Limit antibiotic use

Although it can’t always be avoided, frequent antibiotic use can actually cause more harm than good and lead to UTIs. Antibiotics can cause diarrhea, which can allow unwanted bacteria to enter the urethra. When fighting off illness, antibiotics can wipe out good as well as bad bacteria, which can leave you more prone to infection. Dr. Sherry recommends taking a daily probiotic to help repopulate the good bacteria in your body, but more research is needed to test its effectiveness in treating UTIs.

Avoid feminine hygiene products with scents and chemicals

“Using feminine products that have perfumes and other irritating chemicals can introduce disruptive bacteria into your body,” Dr. Sherry says. Even more so, Dr. Sherry stresses that if you’re prone to UTIs, any products that will allow unwanted bacteria to enter your body should be avoided. “Avoid diaphragms, vaginal sponges, diva cups, and sex toys if you’re prone to UTIs,” she advises.

Wipe front to back

“Always remember to wipe ‘front to back’ to avoid bringing unwanted bacteria from the anus to the vaginal area,” Dr. Sherry says. A rule as simple as this make all the difference between frequent UTIs and not getting any.

Stay hydrated

“Drinking a lot of water will help keep unwanted bacteria moving out of your body,” Dr. Sherry says. “And, don’t hold in your urine for long periods of time—a general rule of thumb is to urinate every two to three hours or when you first feel the urge.”

Get Your Fill of Water and Water-Based Foods

One of the first things to do when you have a urinary tract infection is drink plenty of water. That’s because drinking water can help flush away the bacteria that’s causing your infection, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). (3) It puts you on the right track for recovery.

Most people can be assured they’re getting the water they need by simply drinking water when thirsty, according to the health and medicine division of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. (4) But to be safe, you may want to make sure you’re drinking at least six to eight 8-ounce (oz) glasses of water each day. (3) General recommendations have suggested that women get about 91 oz of water daily and men get about 125 oz each day, including water from food, as also noted in that group’s report. (4)

2. Load Up on Vitamin C for a Healthy Urinary Tract

Getting plenty of foods high in vitamin C is important because large amounts of vitamin C make urine more acidic. This inhibits the growth of bacteria in your urinary tract, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine’s health library. (5) However, if you have an active UTI, you may want to avoid citrus or other acidic foods. These foods are known to irritate the bladder, which is the last thing you need when you’re having pain urinating.

3. Soothe UTI Pain With Heat

Inflammation and irritation from UTIs cause burning, pressure, and pain around your pubic area, says Kandis Rivers, MD, a urologist in the Henry Ford Health System in Wast Bloomfield, Michigan. Applying a heating pad can help soothe the area. (3) Keep the heat setting low, don’t apply it directly to the skin, and limit your use to 15 minutes at a time to avoid burns.

4. Cut Bladder Irritants From Your Diet

When you have a UTI, caffeine, alcohol, spicy food, nicotine, carbonated drinks, and artificial sweeteners can irritate your bladder further, making it harder for your body to heal, according to the Cleveland Clinic. (6) Focus on healthy foods, such as high-fiber carbohydrates (including oatmeal or lentil soup), that are good for your digestive health, says Holly Lucille, ND, RN, a naturopathic doctor in private practice in West Hollywood, California, and the author of Creating and Maintaining Balance: A Woman’s Guide to Safe, Natural Hormone Health.

5. Go Ahead, Empty Your Bladder Again

Every time you empty your bladder — even if it’s just a small amount — you rid it of some of the bacteria causing the infection. (3) Keep making those bathroom runs, advises Dr. Rivers.

6. Consider Herbal Remedies

You may find some relief from taking the herb uva ursi (bearberry leaf), which is sometimes used as an herbal remedy for lower urinary tract infections. (7) But Rivers cautions that it should be taken only for short periods of time — five days or less — as it could cause liver damage.

It’s important to note that even though bearberry leaf may help some, there have been no large randomized controlled trials (the gold standard when it comes to proving the effectiveness of a drug or treatment in medicine) testing it as a remedy for UTIs. (7)

Some preliminary research, including as a study published in 2016 in the European Review for Medical and Pharmacological Sciences, also suggests that D-mannose supplements may help to prevent and treat UTIs. (8,9) Researchers think it might keep bacteria from attaching to the walls of the urinary tract. D-mannose is a simple sugar found naturally in fruits, including oranges, apples, and cranberries.

Always be sure to check with your doctor before an herbal supplement. Supplements, herbs, and other medication you might be taking can cause side effects or may interact with one another. The effects can sometimes be serious.

7. Change to Healthier Daily Habits

Lifestyle changes matter because they can help you recover from a UTI and might prevent another infection, according to the NIDDK. (3)

  • Quit smoking.
  • Wear loose cotton clothing and underwear.
  • Wipe yourself clean from front to back.
  • Choose only fragrance-free personal hygiene products.

8. Cut Back on Meat and Poultry

Some studies, such as one published in August 2018 in the journal mBio, have linked contaminated poultry and meat to E.coli bacteria strains that can cause UTIs. (10) These studies haven’t proven that eating meat or poultry causes UTIs. In fact, some E.coli can live in the intestines without causing any problems. However, bacteria from the gut can enter the urinary tract and cause infection. This risk is greater in women than men, because women have shorter urethras than men, meaning the bacteria has less distance to travel to reach the bladder.

Cutting back on meat and focusing on fruits and veggies may slightly cut your risk of UTIs. According to a study of Buddhists in Taiwan, published in January 2020 in Scientific Reports, compared with nonvegetarians, vegetarians had a 16 percent lower risk of UTI. (11)

A Note About Cranberry Juice and UTIs

Cranberry juice or cranberry extract in supplemental form has long been used as a home remedy for UTIs.

The thought is that “the proanthocyanidins in cranberries may help prevent bladder infections by keeping the bacteria from clinging to the bladder wall,” says Sonya Angelone, MS, RDN, a nutrition consultant based in San Francisco, and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Yet there’s scientific controversy over how effective cranberry juice is at preventing UTIs due to conflicting conclusions in studies on the topic, according to an article published in May 2016 in Advances in Nutrition. (12) Some studies have found it might work, while others have found no effect.

“Bottom line, there is some evidence it may help, and it doesn’t hurt to try it,” says Angelone. Just be sure to chose unsweetened cranberry juice (the sugar in sweetened cranberry juices can actually feed a bacterial infection). Mix this with sparkling water or plain yogurt, she recommends.

Another low-calorie option — choose a cranberry pill that contains d-mannose, she says.

Are Bananas Good for UTIs?

The American Urological Association calls bananas a bladder-friendly food. (13) That’s because bananas aren’t likely to irritate the bladder in most people. Other bladder-friendly fruits and veggies include: pears, green beans, winter squash, and potatoes. While eating bananas may help to lessen bladder irritation, eating bananas alone won’t make a UTI go away.

Can Onions Help UTIs?

Onions, especially raw ones, may cause bladder irritation in some people. (6) If you have an active UTI, eating foods that further irritate the already inflamed tissues of the urinary tract could make UTI symptoms worse.

Can Drinking Apple Cider Vinegar Treat UTIs?

Studies, such as one published in January 2018 in Scientific Reports, have shown that apple cider vinegar has some antibacterial and antifungal properties, but there’s no scientific or medical evidence that drinking apple cider vinegar cures UTIs. (14) Drinking large amounts of apple cider vinegar could lead to throat irritation and tooth decay.

Is Coconut Oil Effective at Alleviating UTI Symptoms?

Some studies have suggested that coconut oil may have antimicrobial properties. (15) However, there’s no research looking specifically at the effect of coconut oil on UTIs.

How To Relieve UTI Pain at Night

If you’ve ever had a urinary tract infection (UTI), you know they can cause incredible pain and discomfort.

And they’re extremely common: More than half of all women will experience a UTI in their lifetime, and though less common, men can get them as well.

UTIs occur when bacteria enters the urinary tract, infecting parts of the urinary system including the bladder, urethra, and kidney. 

The symptoms of a UTI can result in disturbed, restless nights with burning sensations, frequent urges to urinate, and sometimes abdominal or flank pain and cramping.

Home Remedies for UTI Pain Relief

​OTC pain medications like phenazopyridine (Azo), acetaminophen, and ibuprofen can all offer some relief for UTI pain.

There are also other effective home remedies you can try, most of which are likely already in your home.

Drink plenty of water

Drinking water and other non-carbonated, low-sugar fluids helps dilute your urine and flushes bacteria from your bladder.

Proper hydration can also prevent further bacteria growth.

Studies show that increasing your overall water intake can decrease your risk of recurrent UTIs.

On average, it’s suggested that women get at least 11. 5 cups (2.7 liters) and men 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of water per day, but that number varies from person to person, and about 20 percent of that water will likely come from food.

Your goal should be to see clear or light yellow urine, and to urinate at least every four hours.

Empty the bladder

It’s important to fully empty your bladder to prevent the further growth of bacteria, especially when you have a UTI.

Frequent urination is essential in helping to rid your bladder of harmful bacteria, and prevent the worsening of your infection. So don’t hold it! Go when you have to go. 

Avoid food and beverages that may irritate the bladder

The most common bladder irritants are alcohol, caffeinated drinks, carbonated beverages, and spicy dishes.

Both caffeine and alcohol have been found to increase bladder spasming, which can make UTI pain worse. And when men and women increased their intake of coffee or soda, they had higher chances of getting UTI symptoms.

Use a heating pad

Applying a warm heating pad or hot water bottle to your lower abdomen can help minimize bladder pressure and reduce abdominal and low back pain or cramping.

Herbal remedies and vitamins

No herbal remedy has been proven to treat or prevent a UTI, and not all are tested for safety, so it’s best to discuss any herbal treatments with a healthcare professional first.

There are some herbal supplements that may have anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties that can be helpful in treating UTI symptoms.

Studies have shown that certain herbal supplements, like garlic extract, have strong anti-inflammatory properties and may help reduce the growth of bacteria, including E. coli.

Other natural supplements like D-mannose, a sugar naturally found in foods like cranberries and apples, may have antibacterial properties which can help relieve UTI discomfort. Both can be taken in the form of a capsule. 

Cranberry extract or cranberry juice or a vitamin C supplement may also help a UTI go away faster by changing the pH balance of your urine to help keep bacteria from growing.

While not proven to treat a UTI, these may help you feel better faster.

Symptoms of a UTI

UTI symptoms may vary depending on your age and sex, the type of infection you have, and the severity of your infection.

If you have a UTI, you may experience any of the following: 

  • An intense, persistent, and frequent urge to urinate
  • A burning sensation or pain when urinating or just after urinating
  • Passing frequent, small amounts of urine
  • Cloudy urine
  • Blood in the urine
  • Strong or foul-smelling urine
  • Pelvic pain in women
  • Pain in the side, lower abdomen, or back
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Fever

Depending on the type of UTI you have, you may have more specific signs and symptoms.

Symptoms can be similar for a bladder infection or a more serious kidney infection, and in some cases, a vaginal infection or sexually transmitted infection can also cause similar symptoms.

This is why it’s best to visit a healthcare professional for a diagnosis and treatment. 

How to Prevent a UTI

While some individuals may be at higher risk for a UTI, there are plenty of lifestyle changes you can practice to prevent infections. 

  • Stay well hydrated: Drinking water will help dilute your urine and continually flush bacteria from your bladder. 
  • Try cranberry juice: Some studies suggest that cranberries contain an active ingredient that can prevent bacteria like e.coli from adhering to the bladder or urinary tract. Be mindful of the ingredients, as some cranberry juices can be quite high in sugar. Look for pure cranberry juice or take a cranberry extract supplement.
  • Don’t fight the urge to urinate: Urinating frequently can help flush bacteria from the bladder, and reduce your risk of recurring UTIs. Try not to hold in your pee for too long.  
  • Practice good personal hygiene: Always wipe from front to back after using the bathroom to prevent the transferring of unwanted bacteria to the urethra. While menstruating, women should change tampons and pads frequently. 
  • Use the bathroom immediately after sexual activity: During sexual activity, including masturbation, bacteria from the rectal area can get pushed towards the opening of the urethra. Peeing right after sexual contact helps to flush any bacteria out of the urinary system and prevents infections. 
  • Avoid douching or any internal cleansing of the vagina: Douching can not only irritate the urethra, but it can also change the natural protective pH balance and bacteria in the vagina. This can put you at risk not only for a UTI, but also vaginal infections.
  • Switch to breathable, cotton underwear: Bacteria thrives in warm, moist environments, so avoiding synthetic, tight-fitting underwear and thongs can help prevent infections.
  • Wear breathable clothing: Avoid tight fitting clothes that can trap moisture and encourage bacterial growth.
  • Change up your birth control: Certain forms of birth control, like diaphragms and spermicide, can change the natural bacteria that occurs in the vagina, making it easier for harmful bacteria to grow.
  • Avoid fragranced soaps and bath products: Highly fragranced bath and shower products, even those that are advertised for genital use, can cause irritation and can change the natural protective pH of the vagina which can lead to infections. One of the most common bacterial infections is a urinary tract infection, or UTI. If left untreated, a UTI can develop into serious health problems, such as a kidney infection. 

To treat the UTI, your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic, including: 

  • Bactrim (trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole) 
  • Keflex (cephalexin)
  • Monurol (fosfomycin)

However, antibiotics can also increase bacterial resistance, and in some cases, your doctor may recommend that you can safely and effectively treat a UTI at home, without

Here’s how to tell if you have a UTI and when it’s OK to treat one at home.

UTI symptoms

This painful infection occurs when bacteria, usually Escherichia coli (E. coli), enter the urinary tract through the urethra, the tube that carries urine out of your body. 

 These are some of the common symptoms of a UTI:

  • A constant urge to urinate
  • Pain or a burning sensation while urinating
  • Only being able to urinate small amounts
  • Cloudy or strong-smelling urine
  • Pressure in your pelvic area

It’s important to see a doctor if your symptoms persist for more than 48 hours, or if you have a fever, back pain, or blood in your urine. 

Both men and women can get a UTI. However, it’s more common in women because they have shorter urethras, making it easier for bacteria to reach their bladders. In fact, almost half of all women will have at least one UTI in their lifetime.

Can you treat a UTI without antibiotics? 

If you’re experiencing the symptoms of a UTI, you should always check in with your doctor first. 

Because they’re at higher risk for complications, men and pregnant women should never try to treat a UTI at home, according to Rena Malik, M. D., a urologist and director of female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

But for some women with no other serious health problems, it can be possible to treat a UTI at home, without antibiotics. For instance, mild or uncomplicated UTIs may clear out of the bladder naturally, as a strong immune system can help resolve these infections. 

To boost your immune system and help reduce your risk of severe UTIs, it’s important to stay well-hydrated and incorporate essential vitamins and nutrients into your diet. And while these methods won’t treat your UTI as effectively as antibiotics after it’s occured, they can help prevent future ones from occurring. 

Drink lots of water 

Drinking water and staying hydrated can help prevent and treat a UTI. This dilutes your urine so you’ll pee more frequently, helping to flush out the bacteria that’s causing your infection.  

“We recommend that all our patients who have recurrent UTIs drink about 2 to 3 liters of fluid per day,” Malik says. “This can include water, flavored water, and non-caffeinated beverages.”

For example, a study of 141 girls from three to 18 years old showed that inadequate fluid intake and infrequent urination were linked to recurrent UTIs.

You should also avoid drinking fluids that could irritate your bladder and worsen symptoms, such as alcohol and caffeinated beverages.

Consume cranberries 

There is some evidence that cranberries may help prevent UTIs. That’s because they contain proanthocyanidins (PACs), which may stop bacteria from sticking to your urinary tract lining.

One study found that it’s most effective to consume 36mg of cranberry PAC daily to help prevent a UTI. 

“You can drink a very concentrated juice that’s 100% cranberry with no sugar added, or you can take a capsule or tablet that has that dosing in it,” Malik says.  

However, she warns that many cranberry juices contain a lot of sugar but not enough PAC, and many cranberry supplements don’t contain enough PAC to be effective — so make sure you know what kind of cranberry products you’re consuming. 

For reference, an 8-ounce (240-milliliter) serving of an Ocean Spray cranberry juice drink has about 33 to 36mg of PACs, according to a 2017 article in the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) Journal.

Get vitamin C 

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) may increase the acidity of your urine, which can help kill the bacteria causing your UTI. There have been few studies, with mixed results, on whether vitamin C is effective for preventing UTIs.

In one study, pregnant women who took 100mg of vitamin C daily for three months had significantly fewer UTIs than pregnant women who didn’t take vitamin C. However, in another study, participants with spinal cord injuries who took 2,000mg of vitamin C daily did not have fewer UTIs than participants who didn’t increase their vitamin C intake.

“[Vitamin C] certainly won’t hurt you in a short period of time, but if you’re taking it over a long period of time, you should discuss that with your doctor,” Malik says. 

Fruits and vegetables especially high in vitamin C include oranges, grapefruit, and red bell peppers. You can also take a vitamin C supplement.

Try probiotics 

Probiotics are microorganisms that help balance the “bad” bacteria that can cause infections in your body, such as E. coli, with the “good” bacteria that assist in digesting food properly. 

In addition, the probiotic strain lactobacillus may help prevent UTIs by stopping the bad bacteria from adhering to your urinary tract. That’s because lactobacillus produces antibacterial hydrogen peroxide, which makes it difficult for certain bacteria to survive. 

Lactobacillus is available in supplements. It’s also found in yogurt and fermented foods such as kimchi, miso, and sauerkraut.

In one small study, lactobacillus was found to be effective in preventing UTIs in premenopausal women. But another review didn’t find enough evidence to recommend its use.  

Malik says “the jury is still out” on how effective probiotics are for preventing UTIs, and you should talk with your doctor to see if using them could be right for you.

Most people with a kidney infection can be treated at home with a course of antibiotics, and paracetamol if needed.

See a GP if you feel feverish and have pain in your tummy, lower back or genitals that will not go away.

Medicine

Antibiotics

If you’re being treated at home, you’ll usually be prescribed a course of antibiotic tablets or capsules that lasts between 7 and 14 days.

Usually, you’ll start to feel better quite soon after treatment starts. Most people who are diagnosed and treated promptly with antibiotics feel completely better after about 2 weeks.

People who are older or have underlying conditions may take longer to recover.

If your symptoms show no sign of improvement 24 hours after treatment starts, contact a GP for advice.

Painkillers

Taking a painkiller such as paracetamol should help relieve symptoms of pain and a high temperature.

However, anti-inflammatory painkillers (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen are not normally recommended for a kidney infection – they may increase the risk of further kidney problems so should not be taken unless advised by a doctor. A doctor may only prescribe these in certain circumstances.

Things you can try yourself

If you have a kidney infection, try not to “hover” over the toilet seat when you go to the loo because it can result in your bladder not being fully emptied.

It’s also important for most people with a kidney infection to drink plenty of fluids (water is best) because this will help to flush out the bacteria from your kidneys. Aim to drink enough so that you’re frequently passing pale-coloured urine.

If you have kidney failure, get advice from your doctor on how much to drink.

Make sure you get plenty of rest. A kidney infection can be physically draining, even if you’re normally healthy and strong. It may take up to 2 weeks before you’re fit enough to return to work.

Treatment at hospital

The GP may refer you to hospital if you have an underlying problem that makes you vulnerable to kidney infections.

It’s standard practice to further investigate all men with a kidney infection because the condition is much rarer in men. Women do not tend to be referred unless they’ve had 2 or more kidney infections.

Most children with a kidney infection will be treated in hospital.

Hospital treatment may also be needed if:

  • you’re severely dehydrated
  • you’re unable to swallow or keep down any fluids or medicines
  • you have additional symptoms that suggest you may have blood poisoning, such as a rapid heartbeat and losing consciousness
  • you’re pregnant and you also have a high temperature
  • you’re particularly frail and your general health is poor
  • your symptoms fail to improve within 24 hours of starting treatment with antibiotics
  • you have a weakened immune system
  • you have something inside your urinary tract, such as a kidney stone or a urinary catheter
  • you have diabetes
  • you’re over the age of 65
  • you have an underlying condition that affects the way your kidneys work, such as polycystic kidney disease or chronic kidney disease

If you’re admitted to hospital with a kidney infection, you’ll probably be attached to a drip so you can be given fluids to help keep you hydrated. Antibiotics can also be given through the drip.

You’ll have regular blood and urine tests to monitor your health and how effectively the antibiotics are fighting off the infection.

Most people respond well to treatment. As long as there are no complications, you should typically be well enough to leave hospital in 3 to 7 days.

Treatment will usually switch to tablets or capsules after you stop receiving antibiotics through a drip.

You may need further investigations if you get more than one kidney infection. A GP or hospital specialist would arrange these tests for you.

What Is a Urinary Tract Infection?

A bacterial urinary tract infection (UTI) is the most common kind of infection affecting the urinary tract. Urine, or pee, is the fluid that kidneys filter out of the bloodstream. Pee contains salts and waste products, but it doesn’t normally contain bacteria. When bacteria get into the bladder or kidney and multiply in the pee, a UTI can happen.

There are three main types of UTI. Bacteria that infect only the urethra (the short tube that delivers pee from the bladder to the outside of the body) cause urethritis (pronounced: yur-ih-THRY-tis). Bacteria can also cause a bladder infection, which is called cystitis (pronounced: sis-TIE-tis). Another, more serious kind of UTI is infection of the kidney itself, known as pyelonephritis (pronounced: pie-low-nih-FRY-tis). With this type of UTI, a person often has back pain, high fever, and vomiting.

The most common type of UTI is cystitis. These mostly just cause discomfort and inconvenience. Bladder infections can be quickly and easily treated. And it’s important to get treatment promptly to avoid the more serious infection that reaches the kidneys.

What Causes Urinary Tract Infections?

UTIs usually happen because bacteria enter the urethra, then make their way up into the bladder and cause an infection. Girls get UTIs much more often than guys, most likely due to differences in the shape and length of the urethra. Girls have shorter urethras than guys, and the opening lies closer to the anus (where poop comes out) and the vagina, where bacteria are likely to be.

Bacteria can get into the urethra several ways. During sex, for example, bacteria in the vaginal area may be pushed into the urethra and eventually end up in the bladder, where pee provides a good environment for the bacteria to grow. This is why females who are sexually active often get UTIs. (UTIs are not contagious, so you can’t catch a urinary tract infection from someone else.)

Bacteria may also get into a girl’s bladder if she wipes from back to front after a bowel movement (BM), which can contaminate the urethral opening. The use of spermicides (including condoms treated with spermicide) and diaphragms as contraceptives also may increase the risk of UTIs.

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) may cause UTI-like symptoms, such as pain with peeing. This is due to the inflammation and irritation of the urethra or vagina that’s sometimes associated with chlamydia and other STDs. If untreated, STDs can lead to serious long-term problems, including pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and infertility. Unlike UTIs, STDs are contagious.

Some people seem to get frequent UTIs, but they often have other problems that make them more likely to get an infection, like a problem in the urinary tract structures or function. The most common functional problem of the urinary tract is vesicoureteral reflux (pronounced: veh-zi-coe-you-REE-tur-al), a condition in which some pee flows backward, or refluxes, from the bladder into the ureters and even up to the kidneys.

What Are the Signs & Symptoms of UTIs?

UTIs can cause such signs as:

  • pain, burning, or a stinging sensation when peeing
  • an increased urge or more frequent need to pee (though only a very small amount of pee may be passed)
  • fever
  • waking up at night a lot to go to the bathroom
  • belly pain in the area of the bladder (generally below the belly button)
  • foul-smelling pee that may look cloudy or contain blood

If you have any symptoms of a UTI, you’ll need to go to a doctor right away. The sooner you begin treatment, the less uncomfortable you’ll be. Call your doctor’s office or clinic. If you can’t reach your doctor, you can visit an urgent care center or hospital emergency room. The most important thing is to take action as soon as possible.

How Are UTIs Diagnosed?

Only a health care provider can treat urinary tract infections. The first thing a doctor will do is confirm that a person has a UTI by taking a clean-catch urine specimen. At the doctor’s office, you’ll be asked to clean your genital area with disposable wipes and then pee into a sterile (bacteria-free) cup.

The sample may be used for a urinalysis (a test that microscopically checks the pee for germs or pus) or a urine culture (to grow and identify bacteria in a lab). Knowing what bacteria are causing the infection can help your doctor choose the best treatment.

How Are UTIs Treated?

UTIs are treated with antibiotics. After several days of antibiotics, your doctor may repeat the urine tests to be sure that the infection is gone. It’s important to make sure of this because an incompletely treated UTI can come back or spread.

If someone has a lot of pain from a UTI, the doctor may recommend a medicine to help relieve the spasm and pain in the bladder. This will turn pee a bright orange color, but it’s harmless and will usually make a person much more comfortable within hours. In the case of a kidney infection, a doctor may prescribe pain medicine.

If you’ve finished all the medicine or if your symptoms aren’t much better after 2 to 3 days of treatment, contact your doctor.

Drink lots of water during and after treatment because each time you pee, the bladder cleanses itself a little bit more. Cranberry juice may also be helpful. Skip drinks that containe caffeine (which can irritate the bladder), such as soda and iced tea.

People who get a doctor’s help for a UTI right away should be clear of symptoms within a week. Someone with a more severe infection may need treatment in a hospital so they can get antibiotics by injection or IV (intravenously, given into a vein right into the bloodstream).

A doctor may tell people with UTIs to avoid sex for a week or so, which lets the inflammation clear up completely.

Can UTIs Be Prevented?

A few things can help prevent UTIs. After peeing, girls should wipe from front to back with toilet paper. After BMs, wipe from front to back to avoid spreading bacteria from the rectal area to the urethra.

Also, go to the bathroom when needed and don’t hold the pee in. Pee that stays in the bladder gives bacteria a good place to grow.

Keep the genital area clean and dry. Girls should change their tampons and pads regularly during their periods. Bubble baths can irritate the vaginal area, so girls should take showers or plain baths. Avoid long exposure to moisture in the genital area by not wearing nylon underwear or wet swimsuits. Wearing underwear with cotton crotches is also helpful. Skip using feminine hygiene sprays or douches, as these can irritate the urethra.

If you are sexually active, go to the bathroom both before and within 15 minutes after sex. After sex, gently wash the genital area to remove any bacteria. Avoid sexual positions that irritate or hurt the urethra or bladder. Couples who use lubrication during sex should use a water-soluble lubricant such as K-Y Jelly.

Finally, drinking lots of water each day keeps the bladder active and bacteria-free.

UTIs are uncomfortable and often painful, but they’re common and easily treated. The sooner you contact your doctor, the sooner you’ll be able to get rid of the problem.
