Fitness First is a premium, “health-club” style gym with around 60 locations spread across all states in Australia. With over 240,000 members, Fitness First is a popular choice for people looking for something more than just a gym.
Fitness First can be a more expensive option than the large number of small, 24/7 gyms. Like with most things though, you get what you pay for. From a huge range of equipment, and group training options to “on-the-floor” staff support and premium amenities, you’ll quickly see why Fitness First is classified as a health club rather than just a gym.
Each Fitness First club is categorized based on the quality of the equipment, services, and facilities they provide. Passport clubs are the cheapest to access followed by Platinum clubs, Titanium clubs, and Black Label clubs.
Facilities and Services
All Fitness First clubs provide a large variety of equipment to suit most training styles and needs. Cardio zones have plenty of cross-trainers, bikes, rowers, steppers and treadmills. There are free-weights with dumbbells, barbells and various benches if you’re looking to do strength training. You’ll also find a variety of pin-loaded weight machines that are great for beginner to intermediate level weight training. Extensive open areas for stretching and bodyweight exercises are also available. Functional training zones are usually provided with TRX, kettlebells, medicine balls, bands, battle ropes, etc.
Some of the premium clubs come equipped with sauna’s and steam rooms as well as swimming pools for doing laps, aquatic based group classes and rehab. You’ll also find a creche service and on-site cafe at some locations.
For female’s looking to train in a less intimidating environment, some clubs also have dedicated Ladies Only training areas.
The number and types of group classes provided at Fitness First are extensive. You’ll find barre, boxing, LesMills, pilates, yoga, HIIT, tai-chi, Zumba and cycle to name a few. For a full list of class types, refer to the Fitness First website. A 30-minute freestyle group training class is also available and is a great starting point for new members. The type of classes and the timetable for each session can be different for each club. You need to make sure you find out what your local club provides before joining.
For an additional cost on top of your membership, you can access personal training services. Each club has its own group of Personal Trainers (PT) operating out of the facility and each PT can specialise in different areas. If using a PT is going to be a core part of your training, it’s best to do some research to see if the PT’s operating out of your preferred club meet your specific requirements. Unlike many smaller gyms, most Fitness First clubs have a large number of PT’s operating from the facility. As a result, finding one that meets you needs should be fairly straight forward.
Fitness First clubs provide water fountains, sanitising wipes and toilets. You’ll also find excellently appointed change rooms and shower facilities with lockers which make it easy to train either before work, after work or during a lunch break.
Opening hours can vary depending on the club but are generally 5 am-11 pm on weekdays and 6 am-10 pm on weekends. Selected clubs provide 24/7 access to members. Fitness First membership is open to anyone 14 years and up. All members under 18 years of age must have a parent or guardian sign the membership agreement and pre-exercise questionnaire.
14-15 year-olds are limited to using cardiovascular equipment and taking part in group classes that don’t use weights (including water-based classes). They cannot do circuit training or boxing-type exercises.
Members aged 16-17 can do unsupervised resistance training once a qualified staff member has assessed the pre-exercise questionnaire and written and supervised an initial training program.
Minors are not allowed access to 24/7 clubs outside of staffed hours.
Fitness First Pricing
Fitness First has 2 types of fee structures – contract and prepaid. Prepaid memberships are available in groups of 10 visits (expires after 45 days) and 25 visits (expire after 90 days) and are good for casual visitors or those looking to try out the facilities before committing to a long term contract. Contract lengths are available for 3, 12 and 18 months with the cost-reducing for longer contracts.

Ongoing costs vary considerably depending on contract length and the category of club you are looking to join but usually range from $74-$274 per month. The cheapest option only allows you to access your ‘home’ club and isn’t available at all locations.
There is a 14-day comfort guarantee that allows you to cancel your contract within the first 14 days. Your start-up fee is not refundable.
Discounted memberships are available if your place of work has a current corporate agreement with Fitness First. This can often be the case if your workplace is close to a Fitness First club. You can also get a discount if you are a pensioner, have a student card or seniors card. Fitness First also have deals with some health insurers that can provide discounted membership.
Family memberships are also available if memberships are linked to a primary, full-fee paying member who agrees to pay for all memberships.
