Gift shopping is hard. No matter if you’re shopping for a sibling, a longtime spouse, or a co-worker, the act of picking out the perfect gift can be overwhelming. What do they want? What do they not already own? What color would they want it in? Are they allergic to anything? Do they like to read? What is their favorite scent? So many questions, so little time to buy.

To reduce your gift shopping stress, we’ve come up with a list of 50 awesome gifts for all the different types of women—or whoever—in your life. From the home chef to the wine lover to the one you don’t know that well, we have you covered. Here are Reviewed’s picks for the gifts women want in 2021, including some of the best stuff we’ve tested, top-rated popular items, and things our editors own, love, and recommend.

1. For the one who deserves peace and comfort: Pajamas

Pajamas are always a great gift because people rarely ever buy them for themselves. Nordstrom sells pajamas that people—myself included—swear by. They are the Lingerie Moonlight Pajamas, and they have a 4.5-star rating from over 1,600 reviews. A few Reviewed editors own these, and we can confirm that they are comfortable and of great quality for the price.

Get the Nordstrom Lingerie Moonlight Pajamas at Nordstrom for $65

2. For the one who loves getting their hair done: Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer

The Revlon hair dryer brush was arguably the most popular product people bought in 2020, aside from toilet paper. With over 167,000 rave reviews on Amazon (yes, 167,000), it has achieved cult status in the world of beauty products—and it’s approved by our beauty editor, Jessica Kasparian. She tested the hairdryer and found that it absolutely does live up to the hype.

The influencer-approved kitchen item is not only stylish, but it does the job of eight pieces of cookware. It’s a fry pan, saute pan, steamer, skillet, saucier, saucepan, non-stick pan, spatula, and spoon rest. 4. For the one working out at home: Lululemon Yoga Mat

The pandemic has led many people to exercise at home rather than at the gym or in fitness studios. If you’d like to give the gift of a home gym upgrade, consider a yoga mat. Perfect for virtual fitness classes, ab work, stretching, and of course yoga, a yoga mat is a must. Even if they already own one, our top tested pick from Lululemon would be a welcomed enhancement. The mat also travels well for those who are heading into gyms and fitness studios—or those who plan to again one day soon.

Get the Lululemon Reversible Mat 5mm at Lululemon for $88

5. For the one who loves their couch: A cozy throw blanket

Doubling as home decor and personal comfort, throw blankets are a great gift for everyone. For a splurge, Barefoot Dreams sells a CozyChic blanket that Chrissy Teigen once recommended as the gift to buy in a tweet (she owns one and claims to use it ‘365’). Another great option is Anthropologie’s Sophie Faux Fur Throw Blanket, which has a 4.9-star rating from over 380 reviewers. For a less expensive blanket, this throw at Nordstrom is a wonderful option with a 5-star rating from over 2,000 reviews.

6. For the one still using wired headphones: Apple AirPods Pro

Apple’s AirPods Pro are the best true wireless earbuds our experts have ever tested. If you’re shopping for a lover of all things Apple, they would adore a pair of these—even if they already own the original AirPods. Who wouldn’t love an upgrade? For Zoom meetings, working out, and even listening to podcasts while loading and unloading the dishwasher, AirPods are a great gift for anyone.

Get the Apple AirPods Pro at Walmart for $197

7. For the fitness fanatic: Yoga pants

There has never been a better time to give the gift of leggings now that most people are wearing them 24/7. We love Lululemon’s Align leggings at Reviewed. They are the most comfortable leggings a couple of us have ever owned. When buying these as a gift, pay attention to sizing, as you want to get the right pair for your giftee. For example, I am 5″2 and wear the 25″ leggings as pants. The 28″ pants would be better suited for someone who is taller.

Another one of our favorites? Athleta’s Ultra High Rise Elation Tight, which come in a wide range of sizes and performed super well thanks to their soft, breathable fabric.  Not to mention, they have a 4.75-star rating from over 2,000 reviews, which shows just how much people love them.

8. For the jewelry lover: Kate Spade pendant necklace

If the person you’re shopping for enjoys simple and timeless jewelry, this Kate Spade pendant necklace is a perfect gift. It can be dressed up or down and is personalized with the initial of their first name displayed in the pendant. This necklace has over 890 rave reviews and our readers can’t stop buying it. Not to mention, necklaces with initials on them are very much on-trend right now.

The book lover in your life may already have a Kindle, but who doesn’t enjoy the latest and greatest technology the world has to offer? This is the best Kindle we’ve tested and over 94,000 reviewers on Amazon agree.  It has tons of storage space, is glare-free, and is waterproof.

Get the Kindle Paperwhite on Amazon for $149.99

10. For the one who likes being comfortable: Barefoot Dreams CozyChic Cardigan

This cardigan has over 3,500 reviews on Nordstrom and a 5-star rating. I own this myself and can confirm it is actually a comfortable blanket disguised as clothing. When it comes to cardigans and sweaters, the limit does not exist for the amount one can own. They make great gifts—especially when they’re this cozy (and chic).

Get the Barefoot Dreams CozyChic Lite Circle Cardigan from Nordstrom for $116

11. For the one who loves to cook: Staub Dutch Oven

You’ve probably heard of, seen, or owned a Le Creuset dutch oven. They are one of the most popular wedding gifts for newlyweds and, like KitchenAid stand mixers, a kitchen staple for adults everywhere. However, when we tested dutch ovens at Reviewed, our favorite overall was not Le Creuset—it was Staub! We’re not the only ones loving this brand, either. Their cookware is all over food blogs and Instagram. Clearly, these dutch ovens are hot right now, so get one for the person in your life who loves cooking.

12. For the one who should cook more: Home Chef gift card

For those who have busy schedules and order more takeout than they probably should, a meal kit delivery service would be an excellent gift idea. Our favorite meal kit delivery service at Reviewed is Home Chef. Cassidy Olsen, who tested meal kits for Reviewed, summed up the service perfectly: “High-quality ingredients, well-written recipes, and fantastic flavors make the Home Chef experience one you’ll want to integrate into your weeknights.” If you’re shopping for someone who enjoys home-cooked meals, but lacks time in their week to prep and cook, give them the gift of easy weeknight dinners with a Home Chef gift card.

Get a Home Chef Gift Card from Home Chef starting at $50

13. For the home entertainer: Capri Blue Volcano Jar Candle

If you’re shopping for someone who loves home décor, you can never go wrong with a trendy candle as a gift. We love Capri Blue’s Volcano scent at Reviewed. Not only does the scent smell amazing, but the chic jars double as pretty home decor. Anthropologie sells tons of styles for Capri Blue candles, but my go-to’s are the jar candles in blue and white. I have them all over my home.

Get the Capri Blue Volcano Jar Candle from Anthropologie for $22.40

14. For the one who has a lot going on all the time: Gravity Blanket

Weighted blankets are great—and not just because they’re warm, but because they can help you relax. The best weighted blanket we tested is the ultra-popular Gravity Blanket. Gravity claims their blanket is like wearing a hug. If you’re shopping for someone who could use a hug or another blanket to lounge on the couch with, consider getting them a gravity blanket. It’s great to sleep with at night, too.

Get the Apple Watch Series 6 at Best Buy for $399

17. For the homebody: Ugg Slippers

You can’t go wrong with the gift of slippers—especially during a time where many people are spending the majority of time at home. Not only are Ugg slippers and boots trendy again, but the popular Ugg Scuffette II Slippers are the best slippers we tested at Reviewed. It’s worth noting that these slippers are backless, so if you’re shopping for someone who might prefer something they can wear inside and outside, our best full-coverage slipper is the Ugg Ansley Water Resistant Slipper. For the trendy one, the Ugg Fluff Yeah Sandal slippers are perfect. These cult-favorite slippers have a nearly perfect 5-star rating from just about 5,000 reviews, are celebrity-approved, and our tester loved them too.

18. For the music lover: The best portable Bluetooth speaker

If you’re shopping for someone who loves listening to music or podcasts, consider giving the gift of our favorite portable bluetooth speaker, the JBL Flip 5 speaker. It’s the best portable Bluetooth speaker we’ve tested, and it’s waterproof, meaning it can be used anywhere, rain or shine. A portable speaker is always great to have to bring on hikes, use at home, or listen to outside. They’re especially great for outdoor socially distant gatherings.

Air fryers have been one of the trendiest kitchen gadgets for a while now, as they offer a way to make home-cooked fried food that’s healthier than regular fried food. The Phillips Airfryer XXL is the best air fryer we tested and would make a great gift for anyone who likes to cook and eat semi-healthy, and of course, has extra kitchen counter space.

Here at Reviewed, we’ve tested all sorts of coffee makers. Drip, pour-over, cold brew, espresso machines, the list goes on. Because of this, we can safely say that if you’re looking to splurge on someone who loves their coffee, look no further than the best drip coffee maker, the Moccamaster. Not only does it make a great cup of coffee, its mid-century, retro design looks fantastic on countertops. 22. For the one who is always cold: Canada Goose Jacket

If you’re looking to splurge on someone who lives in a place where temperatures plummet to below freezing, a Canada Goose jacket is a great choice. Yes, they are expensive, but I can confirm that they are worth the price. I used to refuse to go outside unless I absolutely had to on extremely cold days, but my Canada Goose totally changed that. I purchased the Gabriola parka two winters ago and not only is it the warmest jacket I’ve owned, but it fits well and is comfortable to move around in. While my coat is low in stock, two popular options at different price points are the Shelburne parka and the Ellison jacket.

23. For the one with fabulous hair: The best curling iron

The one who loves beauty products and having fabulous hair would love the GHD Curve Creative Curl Wand. When we tested curling irons, it came out on top as our favorite. 25. For the lazy neat freak: Robot vacuums

We love robot vacuums at Reviewed and so do our readers. In fact, one of the things our readers continue to buy over and over is robot vacuums. The Eufy RoboVac 11s is the best affordable robot vacuum we’ve ever tested and would make a great gift for anyone, whether they enjoy cleaning or not. While the Eufy is definitely more of a splurge at over $200 in price, the best robot vacuum we’ve ever tested is a splurge multiplied by 10. For $799, you can give the gift of our favorite robot vacuum—the iRobot Roomba i7+. No matter what your budget is, a robot vacuum is always a good choice.

26. For the one who uses too much plastic: The FinalStraw

Give the person you’re shopping for the gift of a reusable straw—and give the environment the gift of one less person using plastic straws. Look at you, doing good things for humanity! Our favorite reusable straw at Reviewed is the FinalStraw. It’s easy to use, carry, and clean, and would make a perfect gift for the person who is still asking for a straw at Starbucks even though they have literally banned them (this is me; I am this person).

Get the FinalStraw with Case, Cleaning Brush, and 100% Silicone Tips on Amazon for $19.95

27. For the one looking forward to future travel plans: Away’s The Carry-On

You’ve probably seen this trendy luggage on Instagram, as it’s a travel blogger favorite. The brand is also one of our favorites at Reviewed. When we tested checked luggage, Away won as our best hard-sided suitcase. In addition to that, one of our writers swears by her Away carry-on. It comes in multiple and looks much different than your average suitcase.

Get Away’s The Carry-On from Away for $225

28. For the binge-watcher: Roku Ultra

The Roku Ultra is our favorite streaming device. If you know someone who is addicted to binging television shows, give them the gift of an enhanced Netflix viewing experience.

Get the Roku Ultra Streaming Device at Amazon for $87.05

29. For the one who lives where it snows: Winter boots

If you’re shopping for someone who lives where it snows, a new, warm pair of winter boots would make for a smart gift. Ugg sells a fantastic pair of boots named Adirondack III that I own, love, and recommend. They’re warm, comfortable, easy to put on and take off, and they go with just about every outfit. I’m not the only person who loves them, either. They have nearly a 5-star rating from over 870 reviewers on Nordstrom’s website. Other great options for winter boots include the extremely popular Sorel Joan of Arctic snow boots that have a 4.5-star rating from over 775 reviews and of course the cult-favorite Bean Boots from L.L.Bean.

30. For the bag lady: Madewell Leather Transport Tote

I have owned Madewell’s zip-top leather tote for a few years now and recommend it as a gift for any woman who is ever on-the-go. The classic tote is big enough to hold belongings for work and long weekends, and it’s stylish enough to use even when there’s not a lot in it. It’s especially great for traveling because of the zip-top—and the fact it fits way more than you would think. The bag comes in a few different colors, but the English Saddle color is the most popular.

Get the Madewell Zip Top Transport Leather Tote at Madewell for $188

31. For the one who still doesn’t have an Instant Pot: Instant Pot

For the past couple of years, Instant Pots have been all the rage for both advanced home chefs and beginners. What is an Instant Pot, you ask? It’s a multi-cooker, meaning it does all the things. It’s a pressure cooker, slow cooker, rice cooker, yogurt maker, cake maker, egg cooker, the list goes on. If they don’t yet have an Instant Pot (or they have an older model), consider giving them the best multi-cooker we’ve ever tested, the Instant Pot Ultra.

Get the Instant Pot Ultra 6 Qt 10-in-1 Pressure Cooker from Amazon for $139.99

32. For the plant parent: A plant from The Sill

The Sill is an online shop for both live plants and faux plants. If you’re shopping for someone who loves greenery, a plant from The Sill would make a great gift, whether they have a green thumb or not. Our editor, Meghan Kavanaugh, reviewed the service and loved it.

Get a real (or fake!) plant at The Sill

33. For the sentimental one: Printed pictures or a photo book

Nothing says “thoughtful gift” more than a book of meaningful photographs. Shutterfly is our favorite online photo printing service at Reviewed. We love its high-quality prints and the wide variety of photo-themed gift options that are available, including photo books. For high-end wedding and baby albums, modern custom calendars, and frames, Artifact Uprising is also incredible. After our wedding, my husband and I made our parents their own layflat wedding albums as gifts on Artifact Uprising, and they were stunning.

34. For the one who is always dehydrated: Yeti Rambler Water Bottle

Yeti products have a cult following, and this popular water bottle would be a welcomed gift for anyone who is good or bad at staying hydrated (I am bad; I guess I need a Yeti Rambler). When we tested water bottles, the Yeti Rambler was our top pick for the outdoors.

Get the Yeti Rambler 26 Oz. Bottle at Yeti or $39.99

35. For the one who walks a lot: Birkenstocks

Birkenstocks slowly made a comeback over the last couple of years, and now they are once again a summer footwear staple. I own three pairs of Birkenstocks (see my review of them here), and they are so comfortable that I no longer wear other shoes during summer. I recommend the Arizona sandals, as well as the less expensive Essentials Arizona sandals. Both are fantastic.

Get the Birkenstock Arizona Soft Footbed Sandal at Nordstrom for $134.95

36. For the carb lover: A pasta maker

If you’re shopping for someone who enjoys cooking and loves Italian food, a pasta maker would make for a fun gift. It’s not just a gadget. It’s also an experience! How fun would it be to learn to make your own pasta in the comfort of your own kitchen?! Our favorite pasta maker at Reviewed is the Marcato Atlas 150.

Get the Marcato Atlas 150 on Amazon for $79. 99

37. For the makeup aficionado: A lighted makeup mirror

If you’re shopping for someone who’s into makeup, it can be hard to get them actual products if you have no idea what they use and love. Something easy to get the makeup lover in your life, though, is an accessory that enhances the experience of putting makeup on: a lighted makeup mirror! The Deweisn Lighted Makeup Mirror is the best value makeup mirror we tested, as it provides perfect views and lighting for optimal makeup application. For under $25, you can help her look flawless every day with this unique gift idea.

Get the Deweisn Tri-Fold Lighted Vanity Makeup Mirror on Amazon for $18.38

38. For the one who is always on-the-go: Fjällräven Backpack

The Fjallravenn backpack is not only trendy and useful (with hundreds of 5-star reviews on Nordstrom), but they are also functional and of great quality. The brand makes our favorite casual use backpack out of all the ones we tested, so we can safely say this is a great gift. No matter their age, a backpack is always nice to have, for school, work, traveling, and commuting.

Get the FJÄLLRÄVEN Kånken Water Resistant Backpack from Nordstrom for $80

39. For the runner: Garmin Forerunner 245 Running Watch

After testing running watches, the Garmin Forerunner 245 took the top spot as the best one. Whether the person you’re shopping for Is training for their 10th marathon or just casually enjoys running, this watch would be welcomed with open arms—I mean wrists.

Get the Garmin Forerunner 245 Running Watch on Amazon for $291.99

40. For the one who hates jeans: Madewell Jeans

I thought I hated jeans until I discovered Madewell jeans. They’re comfortable, they’re slimming, they never rip, and they’re a great price. Madewell also has sizes for all—petite, tall, curvy, etc. If you’re not sure what kind to get, I recommend the perfect vintage jeans or a classic 10-inch (not too low-waisted, but not too high, either) in a solid color dark wash, like Hayes Wash. Read more about why I’m obsessed with Madewell jeans here.

41. For the one who wants to upgrade from iPhone photography to actual photography: Panasonic Lumix LX100

Recommended by one of our tech experts, this camera is perfect for beginners. If you’re shopping for someone who is pretty good at taking smartphone photos, consider giving the gift of real photography this year. Though there is an updated model, the LX100 is still a great choice given the price.

Get the Pansonic Lumix LX100 on Amazon for $597.99

42. For the artsy one: Jiggy for Anthropologie Puzzle and Glue Set

Not only have puzzles become a trendy activity, but so have the options of puzzles to buy. Jiggy’s puzzles are works of art—literally. After your complete them, they become pieces of wall art you can proudly display in your home. For anyone who has been occupying time spent at home with puzzles, a Jiggy puzzle would be a perfect gift.

Get the Jiggy for Anthropologie Puzzle and Glue Set at Anthropologie for $39.95

43. For the wine lover: Corkcicle Insulated Stemless Glass

Corkcicle’s stylish stemless wine thermos is a perfect gift for wine drinkers. With over 1,500 reviews and a 4.5 star rating, this cute little thermos will keep their drink cold during socially distant outdoor gatherings and anti-social outdoor gatherings, in which a person spends time alone outdoors. It comes in a variety of colors, including one called “Unicorn Magic.”

Get the Corkcicle Insulated Stemless Wine Glass on Amazon for $27.95

44. For the health nut: Skinnytaste cookbooks

As a WW (Weight Watchers) member, I almost exclusively cook recipes from the Skinnytaste website and cookbooks. As a longtime follower of Gina Homolka’s blog, I can confirm her recipes are both healthy and amazing. Any of her cookbooks would make for a great gift alone, together, or with a kitchen gadget or small appliance that can be used with the cookbook.

45. For the one who loves being cozy: Lou & Grey Loungewear

Lou & Grey sweats are crazy popular and crazy comfy. I purchased a matching set back in March and have since ordered two more. While they are fantastic together, both the sweatshirt and sweatpants are great on their own, too. The fleece lining is comfortable and has remained that way after countless times in the wash. If you’re looking for a gift that screams comfort, look no further than a Lou & Grey loungewear set. Perfect for all ages and style preferences, you can’t go wrong here.

46. For the girl who has everything: La Mer Moisturizing Crème

La Mer is an expensive moisturizer with a cult following—and also a perfect gift if you want to ball out on someone. La Mer moisturizing cream has over 79,000 hearts at Sephora and over 1,900 reviews at Nordstrom with a 5-star rating. That is a lot of love. Why not spread it? (Pun not intended.)

Get the La Mer Créme de la Mer at Bloomingdale’s for $95.00 – $2,475.00

47. For the one you live with: Peloton (…because then you get to use it, too)

If you’re looking to splurge, a Peloton is truly an amazing gift if you’re shopping for someone who loves spinning. We recently tested exercise bikes and found the newest version of Peloton’s bike, the Bike+, to be the best one on the market. However, the regular bike is still great if you’re not looking to spend that much and want to join the Peloton club. As a proud owner of a Peloton (you can read my review of the original bike here), I think it is a perfect gift if you have the money. An important note: While Peloton bikes are expensive, they can be financed for a monthly price lower than many gym memberships (especially if you’ll be splitting the cost with someone!).

48. For the one who is always smiling: Sugarfina candy

Sugarfina candies are not like regular candies. They are cool candies. But really. With flavors such as bourbon, rosé, and champagne, it doesn’t get much fancier than this.

Get the Sugarfina Floral 3 Piece Candy Bento Box from Bloomingdales for $28

49. For the one you have no idea what to buy: Sephora Favorites Holiday Perfume Sampler

If you ever get stumped on what to give your wife, sister, girlfriend, mom, friend, etc, my go-to gift recommendation is a Sephora perfume sampler. Many years ago, my grandmother bought this for me as a gift. I knew nothing about perfume at the time, but I was able to dabble in a few best-sellers thanks to this kit. When I was done, I picked my favorite and redeemed the coupon in the gift set for a full-sized bottle. Even now that I know about perfume, I would still welcome this gift, as it’s not every day I get to try new fragrances.

Get the Sephora Favorites Coffret Perfume Sampler at Sephora for $75 ($128 value)

50. For the picky one: Gift cards

Shopping for some people can be hard. I get it. I am a person who is hard to shop for. Being this type of person, I can tell you first hand that gift cards are the way to go when shopping for a gift critic. If you’re looking for a gift for someone who loves to spend money, I guarantee they will love the gift of spending someone else’s money.

Gifts for the Impossible Man

We all have at least one on our list – that guy who seems to have everything. Don’t fear though – I’ve went straight to the source (men) and compiled a list of gifts for the impossible man. That’s right – here are over 25 gifts for hard to buy for men.

If you’ve been with me for a while, you may know that holiday gift giving is one of my favorite things in the world. I really love to pick out thoughtful, meaningful gifts for every person on my list and I relish in watching their faces when they open their gifts. Even us snarky gals have a soft side very now and then.

Let me tell ya though – picking out gifts for men can be hard. They can sometimes be just really hard to buy for, right?

So for this gift guide for men who you never really have any idea of what to get them, I went straight to the source – Grunt Labor.

I made him tell me the best gifts he’d received that he always uses over and over again, what items he’s putting on his list this year and what things he finds just really useful in life.

Gifts for Men Who Are Hard To Buy For

Gifts for Men Under $30

So they’ll never lose the remote again…

At just $10, maybe every guy needs to get one of these for Christmas this year. This is perfect for those guys who love leaning back in their chair with a drink close by. And maybe, you won’t get yelled at to help him look for the remote anymore either…. Find it here.

When they know best…

When they’re the best one for figuring out what they need, get them a Happy Guy gift card. You can get these in amounts as little as $20 and they can be used at multiple different retailers!

A Really Cool Bottle Opener

This is one of my favorite gifts for guys I’ve found this year. These are actual bullets that were discharged by the military and then made into bottle openers. You can get them engraved as well. I opted to just have my gift recipient’s initials put on the one I got, but you can do their name, commemorate a special event, or whatever else you can dream up. Find the bullet bottle openers here and use code LIFESTYLE to get 10% off the bottle openers or anything else in this Etsy shop.

Cigar Related Gifts

Both my man of questionable honor and Grunt Labor love a good cigar every now and then. If my education of cigars serves me correctly, a key to keeping cigars fresh is a humidor. Here’s a nice humidor for doing just that.

Your cigar loving man already has a humidor? Well then what about a personalized cutter or cigar travel case?

Sports Related Grilling Items

For the man in your life that has an undying love for his sports team, I’m sure he would appreciate any of these sports team grilling accessories. They’ll literally be able to serve up their team spirit using the meat brander and/or hot dog brander. Then let them show their team spirit and throw in another manly grunt as well when they fully clad their grill with their beloved sports team on the team logo grill cover.

Personalized Collar Stays

Both Grunt and my father-in-law have a set of these and both love them. My father-in-law has a set that says “I love you Pa” on one and my daughter’s name and birthdate on the other. Grunt Labor has one like that as well, but with Daddy. He also has one that says “Kick Ass.” You can seriously have loads of fun customizing these collar stays.

A Great Watch Case

If your guy is like mine and has to have a watch for various occasions (sporty, dressy, fun, etc.) then get him this watch case – it holds 12 watches and they can gaze at their lovelies through the glass top.

An Out of This World Phone Stand

This is another one of those little gems from The Apollo Box. I think this little guy is so cute, but useful too. While he’s getting ready, shaving or just sitting at the table, he can easily watch ESPN, the news or a crazy cat video without ever actually holding his phone. Find the astronaut phone stand here.

Give them a home base.

For their bachelor pad, man cave or workshop, get them a home base – doormat style. This one is especially great for those baseball fans on your list!

Make ’em snazzy.

For the more dapper fellow in your life, get them a bow tie in fun colors! This one comes in over 15 different colors.

Gifts for Men Under $50

For the Sneaker Collector

I think we all know at least one guy who is a bit of a sneaker fanatic. He’s ready to hit order as soon as the latest, trendy style is released. He has boxes of mint condition Jordans. While other’s sneakers look worn within the first month, his are always pristine. For him, there’s this book.

Anything Yeti

If your guy has yet to jump on the Yeti train, then here is the perfect gift for him. These are the real deal at keeping things cold. Both Grunt and I swear by them. The coozie is of course perfect for keeping cans cold. The lowball is great for cocktails on the deck. If you’re looking for a bigger ticket item, the Yeti Tundra Cooler will literally hold ice for days without melting.

So they like beer?

If they are really into craft beer and trying new kinds, then they might love you extra for signing them up for a monthly craft beer club. This craft beer club will send twelve beers a month in four different styles. It’s a gift that keeps on giving throughout the year.

A great knife.

I grew up with men who always carried a pocket knife on them. They used it to cut pears straight from the tree, clean their fingernails and often as a tool. The value of a good pocket knife should never be underestimated. This zebra wood pocket knife can also be personalized.

Personalized Cooler Bag

If they are heading out to go fishing, golfing or any other outdoor adventure, I’m sure they would appreciate a good cooler bag to take along with them. You can get this one in three different colors.

A wallet and a phone case

If they seem to often lose their phone and/or wallet, then this is the perfect gift for them. It puts the two into one and you can personalize it on top of that! Find this little gem right here!

For the baseball enthusiast…

For those guys on your list who love baseball and feel it their life’s mission to visit every MLB stadium, get them this baseball stadium map.

Gifts for Men Under $75

For the Golfer

Get the golfer on your list organized and maybe even give him some room to grow with this two bag golf organizer. It also has pull-out baskets for storing tees, balls and gloves.

A Good Set of Sawhorses

There are few things worse than rickety sawhorses. Grunt Labor and I have had our share of them. Finally getting good solid sawhorses that wouldn’t buckle when something was put on them was one of the best investments we made. This set of two sawhorses includes a cool clamping feature.

A Great Turntable

As we’ve previously discussed, vinyl is back. I’ve already bought myself this Crosley turntable – and it hasn’t stopped playing since I got it – except when I’m sleeping. This is perfect for those guys on your list who love vinyl.

Personalized Wallet with Hidden Message

This wallet is one of my favorite finds this holiday season. First off, it’s leather. I’ve never met a man who didn’t appreciate something leather. Secondly, you can have their initials put on the outside of it, but then also a special message on the inside. Think outside the box for the special message – I had song lyrics put on the wallet I got. Find this wallet here!

Gifts for Men Under $100

A Good Pair of Wireless Earphones

Grunt Labor is a runner and wanted new earphones for a really long time. He got these Beats headphones earlier this year and uses them non-stop. He says they of course have great sound, but are really comfortable as well, which many in-ear headphones aren’t.

A Great Weekender Bag

Every guy needs a good weekender bag. One that’s durable, but not too “pretty” looking. Grunt Labor has one and as I’ve said before, he uses it all the time. These bags are the perfect size for weekend trips.

Gifts for Men Under $125

Help him start the day off right…

I’m on a mission to bring back valets. These are just so handy and perfect for organizing your next day’s attire. Everything you need, all in one place. Find this valet here. This one even has a lidded storage compartment and pull-out drawer for added storage – what a great place to store watches too!

The trendiest gift for men this season….

A professional shave at home…

If you really want to win them over this holiday season, then a great gift option is the new Gillette Labs Heated Razor. It’s warming bar distributes heat throughout the shave to give that feel of a professional hot towel shave at home. Both he and his face will thank you.

How Hard Is It To Buy A House In California?

It’s Harder to Buy a House in California Than Any Other U.S. State

First-time homebuyers just got some bad news: California was tied up as the toughest state in the U.S. to buy a home.

This report is from an analyst with Bankrate.com, Claes Bell. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Bell said the rank of California can be partly due to the high percentage of Californians’ income spending on housing – at 35.2 percent, compared to the 19.4 percent national average. Bell said the cost of housing should generally be less than 28 percent of the gross income of an individual.

By Basil D Soufi – Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=22023379

Gary Painter, a USC public policy professor focused on homeownership and housing markets, said the peculiar situation in California pushes home prices up, thus restricting development opportunities.

“[In California] there are environmental amenities – the beaches and the mountains – that actually make developing housing in every direction impossible, and also makes living in California a premium,” Painter said. “So there’s a lot of people from around the world who want to live here, either full-time or part-time, and that places extra demands on the housing market.”

High housing prices could cause young people and even families to rent out residences instead of buying them outright. A recent study found that almost 54 percent of residents are renters in Los Angeles. It is the nation’s fourth-highest average, and families occupy more than 60 per cent of those rented homes.

“In the Los Angeles region in particular, it is becoming more and more expensive to have close access to the amenities that everyone wants, such as access to jobs and cultural amenities,” Painter said. “Young adults have to make some trade-offs. Their incomes are not as high when they first enter their career, so they either are going to have to buy less housing or they’re going to have to decide to live further away from the kinds of amenities they prefer.”

Some of the young people who can afford to purchase a house end up regretting it. NerdWallet, a website that provides free financial resources and advice, recently released its Home Buyer Reality Survey, which states that about 60 percent of millennial and Generation X homeowners expressed regret and “would do things differently the next time around in the home-buying process.” Just 38 percent of baby boomers said they regretted doing the same thing.

Painter states that the problems facing young would-be homebuyers are not all that different from their older counterparts – in fact they all have to choose what they want, larger spaces or better places.

Real estate agent Andy May says millennials are more interested in living in good, walkable neighborhoods in smaller houses, rather than fancy homes with high-end fittings. However, in the areas they are searching for, such as Silver Lake, Echo Park and Los Feliz and similar communities, it is hard to find accessible properties that go for less than $500,000.

When inventory declines and rates increase, one of the most important variables in the home purchasing process may be the down payment on a home itself. So, May says, he’s witnessed millennials purchasing condos as an alternative, because for young adults straight out of college, those prices are too hard to reach.

“If you want to put down for a house, the average home in Los Angeles County sells for about $550,000 so if you’re going to put 20 percent down, that’s almost $100,000,” May said. “If you have student loans, that impacts your ability to purchase a home, so very few millennials are putting 20 percent down. You can still buy a house with as low as 3 percent, but loans are harder to get.”

Anthony Amorelli used to live in Los Angeles but relocated to San Francisco only recently. Los Angeles also has more affordable housing, he said, than San Francisco, where there is a considerably more crowded housing market.

“It’s kind of intimidating going out there and not being able to afford something,” Amorelli said, “[especially in] an area that you think you should be able[to afford to] to live in.”

Do You Want to Buy Less Stuff? Three People Tell Us How

In an article she wrote for The Soapbox Project about sustainable holiday gifts, Ms. Achanta did not list a bunch of eco-friendly products people can put a bow on, instead writing, “The best way to be sustainable is to stop buying stuff.” Her gift suggestions include digital subscriptions and educational resources, along with some products that replace single-use versions. (This is also a practical matter: Ms. Achanta went from a six-figure paycheck to making a few hundred dollars a month and living off her savings.)

Through The Soapbox Project, Ms. Achanta aims to educate readers about practical ways to decrease their impact on the planet, whether or not they are strapped for cash. For example, she’s writing a lot about buying things secondhand. “Now I’m really following through on that advice, because it’s environmentally and financially responsible,” she said.

Cynthia Tina, the communications director of the Foundation for Intentional Community, sees another option for guilty consumers: joining intentional communities where goods are often shared, made and traded among members. “Not everyone needs to own their own lawn mower or washing machine,” she said.

Intentional communities range from economically self-sufficient communes with their own systems of income to city-based apartment complexes with shared living space. But sharing resources almost always means sharing germs, too. So while some smaller, rural communities have benefited from the safety of isolation and a closed-off pod of social interactions, others have struggled to balance differing expectations of social distancing among members.

Nevertheless, Ms. Tina, 27, has noted a surge of interest in communal living this year — particularly around sharing resources. She herself moved into the intentional community Headwaters Garden and Learning Center, an eco-village in Cabot, Vt., this year. She said she is in the process of building her own home there — solar-powered, made of straw and clay — surrounded by land on which she and fellow community members grow and share food.

It doesn’t relieve her of having to buy things or employ people to undertake services, especially when it comes to building her home, but she said, it helps her live life “peripheral to the capitalist, nine-to-five reality.”

90,000 House for € 1 in Europe: what’s the trick

Together with an expert, we figure out how the programs for the sale of houses in Europe for € 1 are arranged and how much such a purchase will cost in the end

Photo: frantic00 / shutterstock

“Sale of old mansions in Sicily for € 1” – many might think that this is some kind of prank or joke.In fact, it is quite possible to buy a house in Italy for the price of a cup of cappuccino.

There are special programs in Europe where you can buy houses for € 1. However, in order to become a full-fledged owner of such real estate, you need to put it in order. Most of these houses are sold in a deplorable state, and the villages themselves are empty.

Together with Anastasia Faly, a leading foreign real estate analyst at Prian.ru, we understand how the programs for selling homes in Europe for € 1 work and what is the catch.

How the sale of houses for € 1

Today you can buy a house at a symbolic price in many countries. Such actions are periodically arranged in Greece, France, Great Britain, Spain, Croatia, Austria and Norway. But Italy is the undisputed leader. For example, houses for euros can be bought in Bivona, Bisacce, Mussomeli, Molise and Abruzzo.

“Every year, several local communes, usually from the southern regions of the country, announce a € 1 house promotion. Now they have gone even further – they offer not only at home at the price of a cup of coffee, but also an allowance for those who agree to live there – € 8-10 thousand a year, ”said Anastasia Faley.

In Bisacce (a commune in Italy in the Campania region), you can become the owner of a house for € 1

(Photo: CNN Travel)

The authorities are taking such measures to revive life in the commune and attract a young population – most settlements with houses for € 1 are empty. As a rule, the property itself is in disrepair and requires restoration – this is what future owners will have to do.

Local officials collect a pool of such properties (many of them are owned by private owners who cannot or do not want to manage them), advertise this offer and accept applications from potential buyers. Usually, you can find out all the information and apply on the website of the local municipality. News about such sales is often posted not only by local media, but also by Russian ones.

To take part in the program, you need to write an appeal to the municipality with a motivation letter with a story about yourself and why you want to buy such a house. Further, the administration considers the applicants. If approved, the traditional process of buying real estate is launched in the country.

Program Requirements: Repair, Deposit & Jobs

Houses for euros are usually sold subject to certain requirements. A prerequisite for almost all programs is the restoration of a property for a certain period (from one to three years).Absolutely all houses for € 1 are in need of major repairs.

These houses are usually sold subject to certain requirements. A prerequisite for almost all programs is the restoration of a property for a certain period

(Photo: CNN Travel)

Further, depending on the country and region, the requirements may vary. For example, it is often necessary to leave a security deposit in a bank account (usually several thousand euros), which will be returned to the buyer only after repairs. Or it is necessary to invest a certain amount in the restoration – also in the region of several thousand euros.

Some programs have a commitment to move to the region, live there and operate for a period. Sometimes houses for € 1 are sold at auction, in which case the value can increase many times over.

Often, buyers of houses at a symbolic price are obliged not only to renovate the house, but also to create jobs that will be assigned to the local population. This is how the administration stimulates the local economy.

At the same time, there are no special restrictions on applicants for houses for € 1 – they can be citizens of any country, including Russians. At the same time, it is important for foreign applicants to remember that a real estate transaction in itself does not give the right to settle in another country on a permanent basis. More compelling reasons are needed to obtain a residence permit. For example, formal employment or starting your own business.

Nuances of buying a house for € 1

The only plus from participating in such programs is moral satisfaction.Pride that you own a unique property, that you have helped revive a picturesque village somewhere in southern Italy. But it will not be possible to get any financial benefits from such a purchase, the expert warns. The cost of restoring the object will be comparable to or even exceed the amount that would be required to buy a similar home on the secondary market.

The main pitfall – these objects are illiquid. It will be extremely difficult to sell a house in a remote village even after renovation.

As a rule, houses for € 1 are illiquid – it will be extremely difficult to sell such a house even after renovation in a remote village

(Photo: CNN Travel)

“If it were not so, the municipalities would sell them, and not give them for a pittance. The global reason is urbanization. Villages are dying out not only in Russia, but also in Italy, Spain, Portugal and other countries. Perhaps the coronavirus pandemic will give an impetus to the reverse processes – people will again want to live in the provinces, in nature. But in any case, the fracture will not happen quickly, ”says Anastasia Faley.

In addition, if the clauses of the contract are violated (for example, the owner does not have time to restore the house on time), then there may be fines or even termination of the transaction. For example, buyers of houses in Mussomeli (Sicily) are required to carry out the restoration within a year, otherwise they will lose a deposit of € 5,000.

How € 1 becomes tens of thousands

Almost always, the final cost of a house for € 1 turns into a tidy sum – tens of thousands of euros. It all depends on the state of the house, what encumbrances are imposed on it and what repairs will have to be done.

According to experts, only the registration of property will take about € 3-7 thousand – a notary’s fee (without which transactions are impossible in many countries), various administrative fees, translations of contracts and documents, agent commission (you can usually do without it, but it is difficult for a foreigner), flights abroad and back.

Purchase and maintenance taxes are often charged on the cadastral value, which is unlikely to be € 1. All this must be taken into account before the transaction.

Further – restoration. Most of these objects require major repairs (strengthening of the foundation, roofs, replacement of all communications), just cosmetic repairs are indispensable. In addition, there may be aggravating circumstances in the form of the historical significance of the building, and therefore, restrictions on redevelopment and the use of materials.

Most of the houses that are for sale for € 1 require renovation and high costs

(Photo: CNN Travel)

According to the most optimistic calculations, it should be budgeted from € 500 per 1 sq.m. This means that a 100-meter house somewhere in a remote village in Italy will eventually cost at least € 50 thousand. Sometimes a square can cost € 2-3 thousand, depending on the materials, technologies, complexity of the work. It is also worth taking into account the costs of furniture and equipment – and this is another € 10-20 thousand.

Subsequently, when the house is renovated, it will still require annual expenses – taxes and utility prices in Europe are much higher than in Russia.

Expert CV

In resort European countries (Italy, Greece, Spain) and without programs “houses for € 1” there are thousands of inexpensive real estate in the provinces – up to € 50 thousand., € 30 thousand and even € 20 thousand. They are sold freely on the open secondary market without encumbrances in the form of mandatory repairs for a certain period. There, too, may require repairs – but already cosmetic and without obligations. If the task is to buy an inexpensive summer cottage in Europe, it is better not to create unnecessary trouble for yourself and just buy what you like. All the same, you will not save on the € 1 home program in the long run.

In any case, a transaction with foreign real estate should not be carried out with the last money. There will always be additional costs – both at the stage of purchase and during maintenance. And as a rule, the cheapest private houses in the provinces are far from the most liquid ones.

Rituals for falling asleep
What are the rituals for falling asleep?

Sleep is an important part of life, so it should be regular and of high quality 1 .But often the first year of a child’s life becomes a real test for parents. Even such a seemingly simple action as putting a newborn to sleep sometimes turns into a task of increased complexity.

The difficulty is that in infants sleep is still being formed, and the circadian rhythms differ from those to which the parents are accustomed 2 .

Baby sleep rhythms

Before birth, the alternation of sleep phases in the fetus obeys circadian (daily) rhythms and fluctuations in the hormonal background of the expectant mother. After giving birth, it takes time for the child to mature its own regulatory system 2 .

A full-term newborn sleeps on average 16-17 hours 2 , and the total duration of sleep is not affected by the dark and daylight hours 3 .

In infants up to 2 months, 2 sleep phases are distinguished 2.3 :

  • Active sleep. Begins after falling asleep. This phase is important for the stimulation and development of the central nervous system. During active sleep, one can observe the infant’s mobility, rapid eye movements and weakening of reactions to external stimuli (light, sound, touch).
  • Restful sleep. Follows the active phase. During restful sleep, the heart rate slows down, the movements of the eyeballs stop, and the baby stops moving the arms and legs.

Together, these 2 phases form a cycle. Each cycle begins with active sleep, followed by a restful sleep phase. The duration of such a cycle is approximately 45-60 minutes 3 .

But the sleep-wake cycle lasts longer. In breastfed children, it is approximately 1-3 hours, and for “artificial” – 2-5 hours 3 .

Gradually the periods of wakefulness are lengthened, and most of the sleep falls on the night 2 :

  • By the end of 3 months of life, uninterrupted night sleep can be about 5 hours 3 .
  • From 2 to 12 months, children sleep 9-10 hours at night 3 , while the daytime sleep is divided into 1-4 episodes, which can last from 30 minutes to 2 hours 3 .

The regularity of sleep and its disturbances can be assessed after 6 months, when circadian rhythms are formed in the child 3 .

Although the night’s sleep becomes longer, each cycle is still accompanied by micro-awakenings (awakenings) 2.3 , after which the baby can fall asleep quite quickly. This is a short-term activation of the central nervous system, which must be distinguished from full awakening 2 . It will be good if at this moment mom will be there and help the child fall asleep again.

How to properly put a baby to sleep

The American Pediatric Association has developed guidelines for safe infant sleep.Below are some of them (a full list of recommendations can be found at the link) 4 :

  • The best sleeping position is on your back.
  • The mattress must be firm enough, and the bed must not be cluttered with things, blankets, pillows.
  • No smoking in the nursery.
  • If your baby sleeps in a cool room, it is best to dress him up warmly or put him in a special sleeping bag for babies. He should be warm, but not hot, so it is not recommended to wrap him up with a blanket. And in order for the baby to breathe freely, in no case cover him with a blanket with his head.

Babies under 12 months still need night feeds, so sleeping with mom in the same room may be necessary to optimize breastfeeding and closer contact 4 . Sleeping in the same room with the parents does not imply that the child will sleep in the same bed with them, since it does not meet safety requirements 4 .

Before putting your newborn to sleep, also remember that:

  • It is not recommended to swaddle the baby tightly 4 . There are babies who are soothed by this, but swaddling in such a way can make it difficult for the baby to breathe because the chest is compressed and the baby cannot take a deep breath 4 . Swaddling tightly also increases the risk of a lung infection and can worsen hip dysplasia. Do not swaddle a child who is already rolling over on his own from back to stomach 4 .
  • There is no consensus on the use of pacifiers. Some experts believe that they negatively affect breastfeeding and interfere with the formation of a correct bite.Other reports suggest that pacifiers help reduce the risk of respiratory and cardiac problems in infants up to 12 months 4 .
  • Do not encourage falling asleep on your hands or while feeding. Older toddlers do not need to be allowed to fall asleep when watching a movie, after the set time or in their parent’s bed 4 .

How to help your child fall asleep

As the baby develops, fears, anxiety, anxiety may appear when he refuses to sleep separately from his parents and resists falling asleep 2 .The maturation of biological rhythms is facilitated by the child’s environment, the behavior of the parents, adherence to the regime and rules of sleep hygiene 3 .

To ensure quality rest and proper development, parents need to follow the recommendations. Experts advise to adhere to these rules 4 :

  • To put the child to bed in the evening and wake up in the morning at about the same time, despite weekends and holidays 4 .
  • Avoid physical activity before bedtime 4 .
  • Restrict actions in bed that are not related to falling asleep (games, feeding), as this violates the baby’s idea of sleep 4 .
  • Provide comfortable conditions in the bedroom – moderate temperature, low lighting, minimal noise level, comfortable pajamas 4 .
  • Form a laying ritual 5 .
  • Observe the diet – the baby should not have either hunger or overeating. Before going to bed, you can feed him a little. 5 .
  • Keep an activity diary so that you can analyze and understand what interferes with children’s sleep 4 .

How to teach a child to sleep in his crib?

There are various methods that help a child fall asleep on his own, without the help of parents. They are often used as a non-drug treatment for insomnia (sleep disorders) in young children – from 1 to 3 years 4 . Examples of such techniques are described below. The choice of the right one for your baby should be discussed with a baby sleep specialist.

One way to overcome sleep disorders is behavioral therapy. With its help, incorrect associations and sleep settings in a child are changed 4.7 . Behavioral therapy uses the abandonment method. With him, the parents immediately leave the child in the crib and leave the nursery. At the same time, they do not return, having heard his cries or calling, giving him the opportunity to fall asleep on his own 4 .But psychologists do not recommend using this approach if the baby is not yet 6 months old, and he is breastfed 4 , as this can negatively affect the condition of the baby.

In addition, the abandonment method is not suitable for all parents. For those wishing to be near or to calm down a crying baby 4 experts recommend other methods – “check and hold” or “gradual repayment” 4.7 .

Up to table of contents

“Checking and holding”

In preparation for bedtime, the parent spends some time with the child, then puts him in the crib and leaves the room or goes to bed if she is in the nursery. At the same time, within 15-20 minutes, they do not approach the baby and do not react to his crying or screaming. This period is called “exposure” 7

When the allotted 20 minutes have passed, the parent walks up to the child, straightens his bed and returns to himself again. This part is called the check 7 .

It is very important not to take him out of bed or feed him when he wakes up. The exception is children who require night feeds for age or medical reasons. In all other cases, the parent simply comes to the crib for a short time, performing a check, and then leaves again for 15-20 minutes “exposure” 7 .

Gradually – over several nights – the “holding” interval is increased to 30 minutes 7 .

Up to table of contents

“Gradual Maturity”

This technique is designed to “extinguish” the protests and manipulations of the child 7 . There are 2 options for “gradual repayment” – with and without a parent 4 .

The classic option is to leave the baby in the bedroom alone for a certain time, gradually teaching him to fall asleep on his own. Unlike the test and hold method, the child can be reassured. But you need to return to his crib not at the first call, but after a certain time. After the child calms down, you need to leave again, increasing the intervals when he tries to fall asleep without you 7 . This option is suitable for babies over 6 months old 4 .

Until the age of six months, use the “gradual repayment” method in the presence of a parent. It is performed in stages 4 :

  • The parent puts the baby to bed and sits down next to her. If the bed is large, you can lie down next to your child.
  • In the following nights, mom or dad still stays with the baby, but gradually reduces the number of touches, communicates less with him, showing him that they are busy with some business, for example, reading or cleaning the room.
  • When putting the child to bed, the parent does not lie down next to him, but sits on a chair near the crib, about 5 meters from it, continuing to sit until the baby falls asleep.
  • In the next step, the distance between the bed and the chair is increased, gradually moving it back.
  • A little later, you can leave the nursery for a short time, but be sure to return before the child cries.

If the child wakes up, repeat the same steps that you perform at this stage of the method. The stages can be stretched over several days so that the baby has time to get used to each 4 .

Up to table of contents

Laying Rituals

Formation of a laying ritual is considered to be an effective method. 4 . It can complement the “repayment” methodology, but sometimes it works quite well on its own. Suitable for any age, but the earlier you start it, the less likely babies are to develop sleep problems – they fall asleep faster and sleep longer 4 .

The ritual begins when the child is sleepy. Before putting the baby to bed, you need to perform a number of actions. They should be predictable, regular, relaxing, and positive. The total duration of the ritual is 20-45 minutes 4 . If it did not work out at the set time, most likely you need to shift the ritual to another time and wait for drowsiness. It can manifest itself as a loss of interest in surrounding toys and people, redness of the eyelids, rubbing of the eyes, yawning 4 .

Up to table of contents

What are the rituals of falling asleep?

Experts recommend preparing for sleep, which consists of sequential, daily repetitive actions, the so-called routines 5 . They help to speed up falling asleep, improve the quality and duration of sleep, reduce the number of night awakenings 5 .

Most typical nightly rituals 6 :

  • Bathing in warm water with your favorite foam or bath product, light massage.
  • Soothing sounds – “white noise”. This is a monotonous noise that does not carry a semantic load, soothes and helps to forget, for example, flowing water, a metronome, the ticking of a clock or recordings of sounds of nature.
  • Lullabies and fairy tales.
  • Wishes “good night”, “sweet dreams” or other phrases that are uttered only before bedtime.

Sleep experts recommend a three-step ritual that includes bathing, massage and quiet time in the crib 8 .

  • Bath foam can be used during water treatment. For babies from 6 months old, JOHNSON’S ® Foam is suitable. It has a soothing scent to help your baby get ready for bed 8 .
  • Immediately after the warm bath, lightly stroking the skin onto the skin with milk, eg JOHNSON’S ® Bedtime Milk 8 for children over 6 months of age. This massage will further calm your baby and prepare him for sleep, especially thanks to the pleasant scent of milk 8 .
  • At the third stage, you need to dress the child in pajamas, read a bedtime story or sing a lullaby 4.8 .

As a rule, a few days are enough for the association between the evening routine and falling asleep to form 4 .

As you can see, pediatricians and psychologists have developed various methods for healthy children’s sleep and fast falling asleep. But you need to use them, taking into account the age of the child, his habits and features of the nervous system. The task of parents is to organize the baby’s day regimen and prepare him for sleep, calming him down and creating positive associations with the process of falling asleep. With the correct implementation of the recommendations of a specialist, the child will gradually learn to fall asleep on his own and faster, he will sleep longer and stronger.

90,000 Photophobia – causes and treatments

What is photophobia?

Squinting from the bright sun or closing your eyes for a few seconds when leaving a dark room on the street is a normal reaction of the body. Typically, a few minutes are enough to adapt to different lighting conditions. But people with photophobia do not get used to bright light even after a while. Discomfort can be caused not only by the sun, but also by the light from fluorescent and other lamps, as well as normal lighting, in which the eyes of a healthy person feel comfortable.

Sensitivity to light can be chronic, or it can be temporary, associated with some phenomenon, such as trauma.

Contrary to the opinion of many patients, photophobia is not an eye disease as such, but a signal that a person has an eye pathology or diseases of the nervous system.

Often the following symptoms can occur with photophobia:

  1. Cutting, burning, pain or other discomfort in the eyes.
  2. Lachrymation.
  3. Desire to squint even in dim light.
  4. Increase in the diameter of the pupils.
  5. Redness of the eyes.
  6. Decreased visual acuity.
  7. Dry eye syndrome.
  8. Eye fatigue.
  9. Flashes, flies, floating dots, a veil before the eyes.

Fear of light can also be accompanied by other symptoms (they depend on the disease that provoked the photophobia).Among them:

  • headache, migraine, dizziness;
  • shortness of breath;
  • nausea;
  • pressing chest pain;
  • Abrupt mood swings, irritability, depression, aggressive behavior.

Regardless of the number of symptoms, we recommend that you see a doctor. Only a specialist can make the correct diagnosis, find the cause of photophobia and prescribe the correct treatment for the disease that provoked it.

Causes of photophobia

Fear of light can be caused both by some pathology and by external conditions. The following reasons are distinguished:

  1. Congenital features of the eyes. For example, the lack of coloring pigment in the iris, which occurs in albinism.
  2. Taking medication, for example, treating eye diseases with drops that dilate the pupils.
  3. Hours of work at the computer, especially without interruptions.Additional symptoms include dry eye syndrome, eye pain, decreased visual acuity, lacrimation, etc.
  4. Regular and / or prolonged work in a poorly lit room.
  5. Injuries to the organs of vision. Sensitivity to light after injury develops only in the damaged eye. Often the situation is not limited only to this symptom, it all depends on the type of injury.
  6. Heliophobia. It is a panic fear to go outside when the sun is shining there. This is a psychological problem in which patients consider the sun to be the cause of skin cancer, fires, burns and various diseases, so they do not go out into the sun without a hat, sunglasses, short sleeves, etc. Heliophobia often turns into social anxiety, as patients can go out on the street only at night and are forced to be alone for a long time.
  7. Work indoors with air conditioning or simply with dry air. As a rule, patients note in these cases not only photophobia, but also symptoms of dry eye syndrome.
  8. Prolonged eye strain. This usually happens if the work is related to reading, construction, the need to consider small details.
  9. Keratitis (inflammation of the cornea), keratoconjunctivitis, inflammation of the iris and other ophthalmic diseases. Usually, the fear of light in this case is accompanied by lacrimation, redness, pain and pain in the eyes or other symptoms characteristic of each specific diagnosis.
  10. Infectious diseases: influenza, enterovirus, encephalitis, meningitis, measles, etc. These infectious diseases can be accompanied by symptoms of body intoxication: lacrimation, fever, nausea, vomiting, etc.
  11. Damage to the nervous system and various diseases of the central nervous system: depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, psychosis, bipolar disorder, panic attacks, etc.
  12. Anomalies of the development of the eyeball.
  13. Other pathologies: cerebral stroke, abscess, etc. With such a pathology, in addition to photophobia, there is an increased body temperature, headaches, nausea, etc.

Photophobia can be eliminated simply by removing the cause that caused it, for example, sometimes it is enough to start using computer glasses, remove from the eye a particle of dust, a grain of sand or something else that comes into contact with the eye, regularly humidify the air in the room, etc. If the cause of the pathology is deeper , then the treatment of fear of light is directly related to the treatment of the disease that caused it.

Diagnostics and treatment of photophobia

It is impossible to treat eye photophobia without identifying and eliminating its cause.Ophthalmological specialists do not recommend self-diagnosis and self-medication, since the source of photophobia can be a serious illness that requires specialist intervention.

Diagnosis of fear of light

  1. Diagnostic conversation. The doctor determines at what moments the photophobia of the eyes manifests itself, whether this lesion is associated with exposure to sunlight, whether the eyes react to artificial lighting. In addition, the ophthalmologist clarifies the presence of concomitant diseases, finds out whether the patient is taking medication, instills drops, etc.
  2. Ophthalmic examinations. Depending on the symptoms and general health of the patient, the doctor performs biomicroscopy, ophthalmoscopy, tonometry, gonioscopy. The specialist can prescribe additional examinations: ultrasound of the eyes, culture for bacteria, etc. Thanks to thorough diagnostics, he can detect the source of infection, assess the condition of the anterior segment and the fundus, patency of the retinal vessels, etc.
  3. Neurological examinations. If photophobia is not associated with ophthalmic diseases, the patient is advised to visit a neurologist, who can refer the patient for an MRI, Doppler or other examination.

Additionally, the ophthalmologist may recommend that the patient be examined by an endocrinologist, phthisiatrician or other specialist.

Treatment of fear of light

Photophobia can be treated immediately after diagnosis. Therapy usually includes:

  1. Treatment of the underlying disease. For example, a specialist can select medications for the treatment of migraines, panic attacks, etc., prescribe drops to combat conjunctivitis, scleritis, dry eye syndrome, etc.
  2. Refusal from drugs that provoked the fear of light, if it does not harm health.
  3. Wearing sunglasses or photochromic lenses. The optometrist may recommend wearing them until the treatment is effective.

How to avoid fear of light?

Hypersensitivity can develop for a number of reasons. If you want to reduce your risk of photophobia, follow these simple guidelines:

  • Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from bright light, while choosing optics, trust only an ophthalmologist and give preference to high-quality lenses;
  • Wear a hat with a large brim, it will also help hide your eyes from the sun;
  • eye drops help to avoid dry eye syndrome;
  • also use computer glasses and do not forget to take breaks while working at the computer;
  • Wet cleaning also helps to cope with photophobia: it is noted that if there is little dust in the house, then the light does not scatter, the likelihood of developing allergies and dry eye syndrome is reduced.

Which houses should be avoided in the secondary market

“Buy, move in and live” – this is how sellers of apartments in dilapidated Khrushchev lure buyers. At the same time, buyers hear statements that the life of the Khrushchevs is already coming to an end and they are about to fall apart. Similar conversations are going on around the stalinkas, panel houses … In fact, everything is not so simple. If, for example, you are interested in buying> an apartment near the metro, you need to pay attention not only to the location of the house, but also to its condition, regardless of the year of construction.

The age and condition of the house is much more important than the construction technology

The maximum service life of concrete and brick buildings with concrete slabs usually exceeds 100 years. The same applies to houses called Stalinist. So, most of the houses on the secondary market, subject to good construction and normal operation, can provide conditions for a normal life for another 30-60 years. But unfortunately, not everything is going smoothly with the construction and operation.

Not all Khrushchevs and more modern brick and panel houses were built conscientiously. Poor quality building materials and non-compliance with technology were common. The most obvious sign is curved walls that do not fit into any building codes. Bricks falling out of masonry and cement that looks more like caked sand are not extraordinary either.

If you don’t want to level and insulate crooked walls, you can buy an apartment in> Novy Tushino from the developer

You need to pay attention to such nuances when buying both secondary and primary real estate. But if all these problems are hidden under a beautiful renovation, it is difficult to “get to the bottom” of them. But if you decide, for example,> to buy a one-room apartment from a developer, you will have the opportunity to look at the bare walls and evaluate the quality of the builders’ work.

Repairs and communications

In residential buildings periodically (once every several decades) major repairs should be carried out. Therefore, if you are going to buy an apartment in a house that is already, for example, 40 years old, ask when it was overhauled. If it was not carried out at all and is not planned in the near future, it is worth looking for other options.

Even if everything is done perfectly in your apartment, worn out communications and a leaking roof will not let you enjoy the comfort. By the way, communications are not as durable as brick or concrete walls.

Those who decided to buy> apartments in Kuntsevo appreciated the advantages of modern parking from the developer

The service life of water supply and heating pipes depends on the material used and usually does not exceed 30 years.Electric wiring is not eternal either. Depending on the material – copper or aluminum, it should be replaced after 40 or 20 years, respectively.

Problems may not be visible, but sooner or later they will make themselves felt. A leaking riser may not bother you if the water flows directly into the basement. But the fact is that dampness will gradually destroy the foundation, lead to improper shrinkage and cracks in the walls. This process is slow and imperceptible, but it can lead to very unpleasant and difficult to eliminate consequences.By the way, you’ve probably noticed that dampness in the basements of old houses is not such a rare occurrence.

When choosing an apartment in the secondary market, you need to be interested in the condition of not only the purchased apartment, but the whole house, including its communications.

Pay attention to weak points

As for panel houses, their weak point is the numerous seams. Behind them are the joints of the panels. And if in civilized countries it is customary to make embedded elements from stainless steel, then in our country they are simply painted with anti-corrosion paint.Combined with poor quality and inadequate seam maintenance, this can lead to a shorter life span for homes. Therefore, when buying an apartment in a panel house, you should pay special attention to the condition of the joints between the panels.

You can> buy an apartment in Odintsovo in a monolithic building from FGC “Leader”, which will calmly stand for 150 years

One of the reasons for the durability of houses built using monolithic technology is the lack of connections in their load-bearing structure.Curtain walls and insulation not only contribute to comfort, but also protect the house from environmental influences. Insulation and concrete walls of such a house always remain dry and do not freeze. But it can be quite difficult to determine the quality of the construction of such a house, so it is better to focus on the developer’s reputation here.

90,000 Rhinotracheitis in cats: symptoms and treatment. Feline herpesvirus infection

The means of etiotropic, pathogenetic, symptomatic and substitution therapy are used.Particular attention should be paid to the fight against secondary bacterial microflora. Antiherpetic drugs for humans are not effective for feline herpesvirus, therefore interferon remains the most common means of etiotropic therapy today. There are known cases of the production of antibodies to human interferon in the body of cats. Knowing the pathogenetic process of herpes viruses, it is important to take into account the specificity of interferon.

In 2015, the drug Feliferon was developed on the basis of the Scientific and Technological Center “BioInvest”.

Feliferon is a unique species-specific feline interferon with antiviral and immunostimulating effects. Available in the form of a solution for injection. It is used at a dose of 400,000 IU, once a day, per animal.

The mechanism of action consists in suppressing the reproduction of DNA and RNA-containing viruses in infected cells, increasing the resistance of healthy cells of the body to infection with viruses, increasing the phagocytic activity of macrophages and increasing the specific cytotoxicity of lymphocytes.

When adding Feliferon to the scheme of complex therapy of herpesvirus rhinotracheitis in cats, it is noted:

  • early improvement in clinical condition compared to animals not receiving interferon;
  • a more favorable course of the disease in comparison with animals that did not receive interferon, characterized by a rapid normalization of clinical parameters;
  • recovery in the experimental groups in comparison with the control occurs faster by 2-4 days;

It is recommended to use the drug Feliferon in the scheme of complex treatment of feline herpesvirus rhinotracheitis at a dose of 400,000 IU intramuscularly, once a day, the course of treatment is 5-7 days, depending on the dynamics of the course of the disease. In severe cases of the disease, the dose and frequency of use should be doubled.

The use of the drug Feliferon does not cause side effects and complications in animals.

90,000 Is it worth taking a car loan

Not all car enthusiasts have the necessary amount to buy the selected car model. The solution for many in this situation is car loans. But is it worth borrowing a car? On the one hand, this is a real opportunity to divide a large payment into several feasible parts. On the other hand, during the time that the motorist will pay off the loan, the car may fail and the fees will not be canceled.

Advantages of a loan agreement

  • Banks often give loans without guarantors and additional collateral – on the security of a new vehicle. This increases the security of the car loan: if you are unable to make payments, you will only lose the purchased car.
  • Most banks require the borrower to take out auto insurance. This ensures that the machine stays on track and functions perfectly.
  • Thanks to the loan, you can choose from a large number of both new and used cars of various prices.
  • Many car dealerships have partnerships with banks. This will allow you to receive discounts and bonuses, low interest rates or even a zero rate when applying for a loan.
  • The loan will help you buy a comfortable expensive car with an average income.
  • A variety of car loan programs allows you to choose the most beneficial cooperation scheme.
  • You can repay the loan ahead of schedule, restructure it, etc.

Disadvantages of car loans

  • Loan overpayment for 5 years is on average 50% of the value of the car. At the same time, cars are getting cheaper every year.
  • The amount of the monthly installment can only change as a result of restructuring, which is quite difficult to achieve. This situation may arise if you lose your job or have to pay, for example, for repairs or medical treatment.
  • The Bank has the right to increase interest on loans or restructure debt at its discretion.
  • Applying for a loan takes time and effort: you need to collect documents, submit them for consideration, wait for a decision and sign many documents.
  • In fact, you do not fully own the car until the end of the loan payments. You cannot donate or sell it.
  • A penalty is charged for every day of delay in payment.
  • Payments cannot be skipped.
  • While paying off the loan with an average income level, you will have to give up entertainment and recreation – travel, trips to other cities, excursions, holidays, etc.
  • If you have not paid off the debt, the bank may begin the procedure for the alienation of property. As a result, a car enthusiast may be left without a car and without money. Some financial institutions charge a penalty fee that must be paid even after the alienation of the property. This is due to the fact that fines are not included in the body of the loan.

All penalties apply only to careless payers. Borrowers who make timely contributions and take a responsible approach to lending will not have such situations.

Lending pitfalls

  • When buying a vehicle on credit, you need to issue a CASCO policy. The cost of insurance is approximately 8% of the value of the car per year. If you were offered a special price or an interest-free loan at a car dealership, then you will not receive any benefit due to CASCO.And you will also have to issue an OSAGO.

Each bank promotes the services of a partner insurance company. As a result, you may be offered a program that is not the most democratic in terms of cost.

It is also worth considering that many banks provide a commission for opening and closing an account, its maintenance. This also amounts to a few percent of the value of the selected vehicle.

  • Buying a car for cash is more profitable than car loans. But often the car owner makes a decision based on the timing of receiving the car.If you save money, you can spend a couple of years, and if you take out a bank loan, you can get behind the wheel in a few days.
  • An interest-free loan in practice often turns into high interest rates, expensive insurance, a short repayment period (no more than 2 years), and a 50% down payment. With such lending, the choice of car models is rather poor.
  • Express loans, loans without income certificates and down payment should be on the alert. Loans on the most favorable terms for the borrower are issued with proof of income, a decent down payment and full insurance.

When should you take out a loan?

You can safely buy a car on credit in the following cases:

  • For business (e.g. taxi). The car you use will bring you permanent income and pay back the cost of the loan.
  • Sharp rise in prices. In such a situation, it is much more profitable to take a loan and get a car now than to endlessly save up cash.
  • Solution of the transport issue. This applies primarily to residents of the suburbs, where public transport runs irregularly or does not run at all (at night).
  • Purchase of a unique car. You can take a loan if by chance you come across a car that you have been looking for for a very long time: for example, a limited edition car that is not available for sale.

The loan is also justified if:

  • Your income is high, but you also spend a lot. You plan to repay the loan in a few months.
  • You have a significant amount (70% of the amount) and take out a loan for a short term (a year).
  • You have a sum for the purchase of a basic set of cars.A small loan is needed to purchase an additional set of options.

We can draw the following conclusion: it is most profitable to take a loan for a short time – this will avoid thousands of overpayments.

When is a loan not needed?

It is worth thinking several times before taking a loan if:

  • You have a single source of income;
  • Loan payment is equal to 30% of monthly income;
  • You buy your first car.
