Henderson County Life: Cards for a Cause helps nonprofits

Cards for a Cause helps nonprofits

Conrad and Kathy Wrobel turned her hobby into a nonprofit organization that makes greeting cards and donates the proceeds from sales to six nonprofits.

By ANDREW DUNDAS, Special to the Lightning, Published: July 27, 2020

Kathy Wrobel had made cards for 25 years as personal gifts for friends and family, a creative outlet while she managed a demanding corporate career in sales. When she retired June 30 of last year, she wanted to give back to community and her card making hobby seemed the perfect way.

“Once I kind of put that out there, that I was doing this, everything unfolded for me,” she said. She prayed about the idea for a long time, and things fell into place like it was meant to be.
Kathy and her husband, Conrad, formed Cards for HVL Causes, a nonprofit organization that gives 100 percent of the sales of high-quality, handcrafted cards to six local charities.

“We are not really selling the cards, per se, because we never get any money for them,” she says. “The money goes directly to the nonprofits.” When they buy one of the greeting cards, purchasers choose from among six local organizations where they want their money to go: the Blue Ridge Humane Society, Four Seasons Hospice Foundation, Interfaith Assistance Ministry, Open Arms, Safelight and St. Gerard House.

Because all funds go directly to the charities, Cards for HVL Causes relies on donations from the community to pay for materials and supplies. “Every dollar donated translates to $10 in card sales,” Kathy says. “When somebody donates to Cards for HVL Causes, it multiplies 10-fold in terms of the impact to these six organizations.”

Once the word got out about her organization, “volunteers came out of the woodwork,” she says. Cards for HVL Causes now has a group of over 20 volunteers, including a second designer working alongside Kathy. They always welcome more help.

When Cards for HVL Causes first started, volunteers came to the Wrobel’s house on the third Monday of every month. The entire home was transformed into a production area as the card makers split into teams, each turning out 50-60 of the pre-designed cards a day.

“One thing volunteers do as well, we actually do some of the deliveries with orders over $25,” Conrad says.

Personal delivery became much more important once COVID-19 appeared. Cards for HVL Causes could not sell their cards in stores or make them in person. “COVID kind of forces people to think out of the box,” Kathy says. “So, we were not going to be deterred.”

The Wrobels continued production by putting together pre-made kits full of supplies and leaving them on their doorstep for volunteers to pick up.
“Our front door has become like shipping and receiving,” Kathy says. After joining a Zoom call to learn how to make the cards, the volunteers work from home, then leave the finished product back on the Wrobel’s doorstep.

Cards for HVL Causes launched a website and online store last month. “We thought that everything was going to be hampered by COVID, but actually it has accelerated our program,” Kathy says. She said they can reach more people online than at thrift shops in downtown Hendersonville.

Cards for HVL Causes make two cards specifically for COVID-19. One is a “I miss you” card featuring a masked teddy bear and the other is for expressing thanks to health care workers.

Prior to retiring, Kathy was a national sales director for the commercial side of Staples, selling to other large businesses. Conrad had a varied career, working in IT and management information services in fields such as office supply, furniture and hobby and craft supply.

SHIRTTAIL

Cards for HVL Causes welcomes new volunteers and is specifically looking for someone with social media experience. To support the organization, people may donate on their website, she said, or support their work by buying cards at cardsforacausenc.com or at the Four Seasons Hospice, 215 N. Main St., Hendersonville, and 21 Long Shoals Road, Asheville.

Why did we create charitygreetingcards.com.au? It’s simple really – to spread joy, share well-wishes, and give to those that need it the most. We like to think of it like positivity wrapped in positivity, smiles that create even more smiles!

Most people want to give, they want to help, but modern life’s distractions and pace make it challenging. So we made the process of giving easier, by offering you a huge choice of fun, quirky, and cute greeting cards that you can send your family, friends, loved ones, coworkers, or business associates. Every greeting card you buy and/or send, a contribution is made to an amazing local or national charity.

There’s something immensely satisfying when you know that every smile you’ve given with your well-wishes, gives a little bit more.

And we like to think that everything we do goes towards supporting charities within our community, nationally and internationally.

About charitygreetingcards.com.au

Our small team started this business in 1999, with the explicit purpose to give as much as possible to those in need. To date, we have worked with dozens of Australian charities, including Amnesty International, the Australian Cancer Research Foundation, the Australian Red Cross, and many more.

40 cents of every single birthday, Christmas, and thank you card sold on charitygreetingcards.com.au goes to charity. A little can go a long way.

At the moment our customers can contribute to more than 85 amazing charities every time they purchase a greeting card from us.

What started out as a small idea with a big heart, grew to exceed even our wildest expectations. With the help and support of our generous customers, we have managed to give millions to these great organisations!

But our mission isn’t even close to being accomplished, in fact, we like to think that it’s just starting. Yes, we’ve helped a lot of people, but we know we can help even more. That’s where you come in dear customer, because every purchase you make goes to a good cause of your choice.

Show Your Social Responsibility

Do you want a way to show your business’ social responsibility? Charitygreetingcards.com.au is a great way for small and medium-size businesses, that don’t have the ability or capacity to set up a perpetual social responsibility program, to say, ‘hey we care too’. Send your customers, business partners, employees, and suppliers beautiful cards, with the charity of your choice proudly displayed.

With the ability to set up personalised messages, add a logo, and professional printing, it can help your business convey its professionalism and most importantly communicate that you and your organisation are passionate about helping others.

Are you an artisan or online seller that sends their crafts and products around the world? Consider charitygreetingcards.com.au for your thank you cards to not only show your appreciation but also that you care about important social issues.

How are contributions used?

We work with some truly wonderful organisations that are active in a multitude of fields. From medical research to human rights and animal welfare, the people that make up these charities are all contributing to a better, brighter future and more humane world.

Some of these people fight hunger like the Foodbank South Australia, some are doing cutting edge research to fight illnesses like the National Breast Cancer Association. We are humbled by the work they contribute and we are elated that we can help them continue this work with what we do.

A Brief History of Greeting Cards

You might be surprised to find out that greeting cards date back to the ancient Chinese and Egyptians! It was customary in ancient China to give greeting cards to commemorate the beginning of the New Year. Ancient Egyptian greeting cards were made out of papyrus, which is admittedly fancier than today’s paper cards, but much more difficult to put in a mailbox. In Europe, paper greeting cards became popular in the 15th century and they were given for New Years’ and Valentine’s day.

An Interesting little fact here, the Manchester Metropolitan University has a collection of 32,000 cards that date back to the Edwardian and Victorian period and 450 Valentine’s day cards some dating back to the early 1800s. Who would’ve thought that our great-great-grandparents were so romantic?

Christmas cards became widely popular in the 1850’s due to printing becoming widely available, the invention of the postal stamp and the introduction of more affordable postal rates. And since then billions of 5 dollar notes have been sent in Christmas and birthday cards by grannies across the world to their little snookums (I can’t corroborate that last fact, but it sounds about right doesn’t it?).

Christmas Cards

Season’s greetings, happy holidays, merry Christmas! Let your family, friends, loved ones, and coworkers know you are thinking about them during the jolliest of seasons!

Birthday Cards

Do you have a loved one that has completed yet another full rotation around the sun? Let them know you are happy to have them in your life, with a special and personalised birthday card!

Thank You Cards

Sometimes, you want to give a little more gratitude and a Thank you card that gives to charity too, couldn’t be a better sign of appreciation!

Send a holiday card, support a worthy local cause

Even with some people turning to electronic holiday greetings, sending cards by mail is still a treasured tradition.

Americans purchase approximately 6.5 billion greeting cards each year, including 1.6 billion Christmas cards, according to the Greeting Card Association, an industry trade group.

That makes Christmas cards the most popular type of seasonal card.

Overall, holiday greeting cards made up about 43 percent of all U.S. household personal correspondence in 2018, according to a study sponsored by United States Postal Service.

A greeting card is a great way to let someone know you’re thinking about them — and it’s also a great way to show support for a worthy cause. Following are some greeting card options that benefit organizations across Western Pennsylvania.

And once you have your cards, remember this — the USPS recommends mailing them by Dec. 18 for delivery by Christmas Day.

Make-A-Wish

A quartet of young artists designed the vibrant, full-color cards that will benefit Make-A-Wish Greater Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The four winners were chosen from dozens of designs submitted by wish kids.

Ellie, 16, of Moscow, Pa., is awaiting her wish to go to Hawaii. Dahlyn, 11, of Great Cacapon, W.Va., wished to go to the Florida theme parks. Ivy, 14, of Pittsburgh wished to see a Broadway show in New York City. Veanna, 15, of Sarver is awaiting her wish to go to Hawaii.

Ellie, 16, from Moscow, Pa., designed this holiday card for Make-A-Wish Greater Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

A message on all cards reads, “Proceeds from this card will help Make-A-Wish Greater Pennsylvania and West Virginia make wishes come true for more children like (child’s name). If you know of a child living with a critical illness, please refer them at wish.org/refer.” The back of the cards have the designer’s name, hometown, age, medical condition and wish.

Each design is available in a package of 15 cards with envelopes for $15 plus shipping and handling. Proceeds benefit the regional Make-A-Wish chapter’s efforts to grant wishes to children, ages 2½-18, with critical illnesses. The chapter is one of the most active in the country, having fulfilled nearly 20,000 wishes.

Cards will be shipped to a preferred address; no office pickups are allowed this year because of covid-19 restrictions.

To view color samples of the cards or to place an order, visit wish.org/greaterpawv/holidaycards2020. Customers also can call 800-676-9474 for information and to place an order.

Little Sisters of the Poor

This year’s card depicts Mary holding baby Jesus, in a blue sketch on a white background created by Sister Martha. The previous year’s cards also are available.

All proceeds from card sales help to support elderly poor residents in the Little Sisters’ care.

Cards can be viewed and ordered online at littlesistersofthepoorpittsburgh.org.

They also can be ordered by phone at 412-307-1100, or by sending a check made payable to Little Sisters of the Poor to 1028 Benton Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15212. Arrangements can be made for pickup at the main entrance of the home.

Pittsburgh Yinzer Greetings

For a dose of humor mixed with Christmas cheer, Pittsburgh Yinzer Greetings has released four new Christmas and holidays cards featuring the work of Pittsburgh stand-up comedian Jim Krenn, radio personality Larry Richert and cartoonist Rob Rogers.

“While Christmas can feel like chaos, connecting with loved ones close by or across the United States is what truly gives meaning to the season,” Krenn said. “So why not do it in a way that is super fun … and is uniquely Pittsburgh.”

This year’s selection features Rogers’ hand-lettering and illustrations in a mix of traditional and retro looks.

Pittsburgh Yinzer Greetings

Pittsburgh Yinzer Greetings pokes fun at the Pittsburgh parking chair with this holiday card.

One card shows Pittsburgh’s iconic parking chair on the roof next to the chimney “saving a spot for Santa.”

Another pokes fun at PennDOT for closures of the Liberty Tubes in a spin on “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.” In a third, Santa tells the elves about his “buddy Ronnie up ‘er in Butler” whose venison stew recipe will “knock your socks off” — as apprehensive reindeer listen from outside the window.

The fourth acknowledges Pittsburgh’s love for the black and gold in Christmas tree decorations.

At $4.99 each, the cards will be available in greeting card departments of Pittsburgh-area Giant Eagle and Market District stores or online at yinzercards.com.

With each card purchase, 10% of net proceeds goes to Animal Friends, a charity long-supported by Krenn.

Westmoreland Historical Society

A box of 10 note cards bearing the script message, “Peace,” depicts the Hanna’s Town stockade on a clear, snowy night with one star shining. The inside is blank to accommodate personal messages.

90,000 Scribe for Christmas :: Society :: Newspaper RBK

Special greeting cards are becoming fashionable in Germany

Photo: ERA

On the eve of Christmas, German firms are sending partners from 50 million to 80 million greeting cards.Especially appreciated when the Christmas wishes are written personally by the head of the company. This year, an unusual startup appeared in Berlin, which fulfills orders for writing greetings by hand. At the same time in Germany there is a growing demand for high-tech robotic machines imitating various handwritings.

German company bosses can breathe a sigh of relief. The trend, which has spread in Germany in recent years, when a top manager congratulates a business partner with a handwritten postcard, pushed the Berlin entrepreneur Thorsten Petzold to create a unique company Schreibstatt this year. She accepts orders for any handwritten work. Mr. Petzold has 57 calligraphers on his staff, who carry out up to two thousand orders every day. Recently, 500 Christmas cards with handwritten greetings in gold were made here for one bank. Depending on the complexity of the order, the cost of one postcard ranges from 3―5 to 30―40 euros. The specificity of this business is that an increase in the volume of an order has practically no effect on a price reduction. “After all, the thousandth postcard should be written with the same care as the first ten,” the businessman explains.By the way, even professional scribes cannot work more than three hours in a row.

Only robot scribes Universelle plus can help here. “November is the hardest month of the year for us. This is the time when we are pushing our limits, ”says Jan-Markus Karl to Die Welt. He is the head of Signascript, which makes the device worth 14,000 euros. It is the only company in Germany that, back in the 1960s, began assembling machines that copy the user’s personal signature. The main buyers were those who are usually tormented by requests for autographs, such as show business stars and politicians. To date, more than 500 celebrities use such robots. The current generation of automatic scribes Universelle plus owns eight different handwritings and, if necessary, can copy the customer’s handwriting as well. Mr. Karl’s company produces 2 million pages of “handwritten” text a year using this equipment, including 300,000 Christmas cards.

It is very dangerous to underestimate the importance of a Christmas greeting card for business, ”says Stefan Zschaler, managing partner of the Leagas Delaney advertising company in Hamburg. This manager has more than once dealt with clients who have corrected their orders almost twenty times, because an unsuccessful text or design may well ruin relations with partners. This is especially true now that new anti-corruption laws prevent business people from sending expensive Christmas gifts to each other. “What remains? Only a postcard, ”explains Mr. Zschaler.

The traditional greeting card business in Germany is also growing rapidly. Thus, the printing house of the publishing and mail-order company Kallos Verlag und Versand began to carry out Christmas orders in the summer. It is one of the largest companies in the country that produces Christmas greetings for various businesses. The number of its corporate clients reaches several tens of thousands – from giant concerns that order 30-40 thousand postcards for Christmas, to companies that need only 50 postcards.

“Our clients focus on unique design and original greeting text.A corporate Christmas card must have its own individuality, and not look like a mass product from a newsstand, ”emphasizes Karl-Theo Welshoff, head of Kallos Verlag und Versand. According to him, customers are now increasingly preferring a group photo of smiling marketing employees in red Santa Claus hats instead of the traditional winter landscape or stylized snowflakes. By the way, Mr. Welshof himself always writes Christmas greetings to his business partners only by hand.

GT – Greeting cards were handed to women drivers

Today, greeting cards were presented to women drivers in one of the central squares of the city. This is how the action took place on the eve of Mother’s Day, which is celebrated in Russia on the last Sunday of November. Young traffic inspectors, together with the traffic police, congratulated all mothers, including future ones, on the upcoming holiday and reminded them of the road safety rules.

“No documents needed. Can you give us a minute? We are holding a Mother’s Day event today. The guys have prepared wishes and gifts for you, please, come literally for a minute. ”

This reason for the stop is quite unexpected for many female drivers. But having found out what was the matter, the ladies behind the wheel break into a smile and gladly go to meet the guys. Young traffic inspectors from school # 10 prepared words of congratulations and parting words for them. We also made greeting cards with our own hands.

“We wish you happiness, safety on the roads, and always follow the traffic rules. This is for you. Happy Mother’s Day. ”

“Didn’t you expect to be stopped for this? – Honestly, no. – Do you know about such a holiday? – Of course I know. – Do you mark, congratulate your mothers? – I certainly congratulate you. I give some nice things. I definitely do it. ”

Young inspectors withstand bad weather. They try to find warm words for each car owner. The latter, in turn, even try to thank the guys.

“In order to avoid accidents on the roads, always wear your seat belts. We wish you all the very best. This is for you. “Thank you, and you have a good study.”

“What an impression! Cool! But the guys are probably frozen. ”

Angelina Kholina, curator of the detachment of young traffic inspectors, secondary school №10:

“When they found out, they gladly began to think of what we would do, how we would do it, and offered their ideas. We were very glad that we were again invited to participate by traffic inspectors. We did it all with great pleasure. ”

The employees of the state traffic inspectorate also joined the congratulations. Traditionally, they hand out road traffic regulations to drivers.

Tatiana Bushueva, inspector for the promotion of road safety UGIBDD Yaroslavl:

“Mothers are associated with life, health, safety. All the same, mothers try to protect their children from all problems. Therefore, I think it is not a bad idea to hold such an action, specifically on the topic of road safety.Because there are a lot of women drivers who transport their children. I think they are more responsible road users. ”

Mother’s Day has been celebrated in Russia for over twenty years, since 1998. And of course, a lot depends on the safety of the most important person in the life of each of us. Including on the roads.

90,000 How to make life easier and not buy trash

Over the years I got so used to sending them out that at first I was terrified that I would not live up to expectations.

Postcards are a good reason to restore communication with old acquaintances, a way to express respect and attention to elderly loved ones who cannot be found on social networks. Thanks to the cards that come by mail, you will find out how distant relatives have changed. The trouble is that both the production of postcards and the methods of their delivery significantly add greenhouse emissions to the atmosphere. Unfortunately, photographic paper is not yet recycled, and therefore, sooner or later, it is destined to be buried in a landfill.

E-cards are a good alternative, especially for those looking to reduce their eco-footprint.But it is also true that such congratulations are devoid of charm and impersonal, especially when they are sent automatically to a huge mailing list. But if you get down to business wisely, a postcard can be both special and harmless to the planet.

A congratulation becomes personal when it is personalized, no matter how it is sent. Of course, a long list of recipients does not help the recipient to appreciate your attention. In the chapter “The Workplace and Spam,” I said earlier that it is better to have a few close friends than to waste energy simulating friendships with many people.Take a critical look at your mailing list and refuse to send greetings to those you don’t feel close to. If you reduce the number of addressees, then an individual approach becomes a doable task. Here it is not important whether you use real mail or e-mail. It is important that you can write a few words personally to everyone, for example, why this friendship is so important to you. And it will make the message meaningful. If you are an adherent of modern methods of communication, double-check if you forgot to attach the postcard to the shipment (a postcard, not an annoying link to it), and send each message separately, and not in a list or, even worse, a “blind copy”.

In an effort to reduce the eco-trail, together with our sons, we spent weeks learning how to create personalized videos and pictures for each of our friends and relatives, along with personal wishes. But this is probably not for everyone, so here are some tips for traditional mail and paper card aficionados.

How to choose

• Use old postcards to create new ones.

• Make torn paper cards by adding seeds.

• When buying new cards, make sure they are recyclable and that the paper is made from recycled materials, not new wood.

• The stamp should be small.

• Buy or make a card that can be sent without an envelope – and save on postage as well.

• You can make a double card with glue and a strip of paper.

How to do without envelopes

• Buy or make a postcard suitable for sending without an envelope. This will also save you on postage costs.

• Seal a regular double postcard with a small piece of duct tape or a drop of homemade glue and sign the address on the back.

What to do with the postcards sent to you

• Set them aside for shipping next year.

• Remove the photographs from them and place the rest in a waste paper container.

• In the United States, postcards can be sent to St. Jude Ranch, an organization that rescues abused children. The address is in the Resources section.

Everyone has their own ideas about how best to express feelings and attention. For example, my elderly relatives like to bring gifts in person. This is, of course, much more difficult than sending a postcard or an email, but if there are fewer queues in shopping centers, then you can find time for this. In addition, postcards and emails can be replaced with phone calls or video chat.

How scammers steal data during the holidays

“We give 5000 bonuses for gifts by March 8”, “We have sent you a greeting card. Click on the link to watch.” It would seem that these are just congratulatory messages, in which there is nothing wrong. However, bulk shipments are a good reason for scammers to realize their insidious plans. Alexei Drozd, head of the information security department at Searchinform, says that such messages are just a way to deliver malicious content. It can be in the video itself or be available for download via a phishing link in an email or messenger message.

Malicious content is an encryption virus (a fraudster encrypts all files, and then demands a ransom for the decryption code), a spyware or stealer that will not manifest itself at all, but will collect information about passwords to mail, accounts in social networks, to the banking application, – explained Alexey Drozd.

Greetings with a supposedly gift certificate for a certain amount of funds are common. To receive it, scammers require you to provide card details. As a result, there was no gift, no money on the plastic account, noted Dmitry Sysoev, analyst of Brobank.ru service.

At the same time, more sophisticated options can be used. For example, to get acquainted with a congratulation, seemingly harmless information is requested – a phone number. After that, social engineering begins to work – when the fraudster calls on behalf of the bank and asks for the identification data of the card under various pretexts. It is important to remember that scammers do not sleep and become active just during the holiday periods, – said the analyst.

Fraudsters can steal user data by connecting to a public Wi-Fi network or installing a spyware that is a clone of a well-known application, warns Anatoly Sazonov, a leading specialist of the consulting unit at Infosecurity a Softline Company.

According to Alexey Rybakov, General Director of the IT-company Omega, stores are constantly tightening requirements for mobile applications that could somehow steal the user’s personal data.

In fact, users open access to data on their own. Everything is very simple here: when the device asks if the new application can be trusted, the user confirms. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully monitor which application is given access to data and whether these accesses are really necessary for the effective operation of the application, – said Alexey Rybakov.

In general, a successful hack requires a number of conditions to be met. This is the presence of unpatched vulnerabilities, and the technical equipment of the attacker, his skills, as well as how responsible the user himself is in ensuring the security of his smartphone. According to Doctor Web service expert Alexander Goryachev, it is important to remember that outdated smartphones are more vulnerable than modern ones. Depending on these and other factors, different hacking approaches can be used, and there is no guarantee that the attempt will be successful.

It is important to note that two-factor authentication does not always help protect personal information.Any authentication mechanisms are very vulnerable.

Building good authentication mechanisms is quite difficult: they require the user to have a certain kind of tokens, which can also be stolen. With biometric authentication, the situation is even worse: if you have some data used for authentication, then if such a database is stolen, there will be nothing to replace them, – noted the professor of the information security department of the VMK Moscow State University named after M.V. In order to prevent information theft from personal devices of users, expert Alexander Goryachev advises not to use USB hubs to charge a smartphone in public places. Through them, attackers can compromise the device. In addition, he recommends using the data encryption function built into the operating system.

Even if your device is stolen, random thieves will get a “brick”: without a password they will not be able to read personal or business correspondence, view photos, documents and other confidential data stored in the memory of your smartphone, – explained Alexander Goryachev …

Doctor Web’s expert noted that confidential and especially valuable information should be stored in a secure encrypted storage built into the operating system and under a password. In addition, there are specialized third-party applications that also allow you to encrypt files. Access passwords are best stored in specialized programs – password managers. However, they do not give a 100% guarantee of the safety of information. For greater security, the password manager itself can be kept on a separate device (for example, on a USB flash drive specially prepared for this), which will not be used for other purposes.Still, it is better not to consider mobile devices as a means of storing secret or simply important information, warned Goryachev.
