CSS Animated 3D Greeting Card

December 24th, 2012 — Foothill Ranch, CA

Instructional Demo

2012 Christmas Card

(Demos Require a Webkit Browser. Chrome is Recommended.)

Download Editable Card Sprite (Adobe Fireworks)

My wife has crafted beautiful handmade Christmas cards for the last 2 years. We would love to send them to all of our family and friends, but the supplies are expensive and they require a lot of time to make. I’ve seen nice animations of greeting cards on sites like punchbowl.com, but they are usually done in Flash, and we all know the problems with Flash, right? So I set out to make my own CSS-animated version.

I wish I could say that I flew through this project, but it took me at least 20 hours to complete. When I began I had no experience with CSS transitions or animations. The most challenging part was keeping my frame of reference when thinking about the transformations, especially the top-inside of the card. Another big challenge was the layering of elements. I began by using z-index positioning, however that had problems with layers flickering during rotation. Instead of z-index, the better alternative seems to be to use the translateZ property.

The code works as intended in Google Chrome, but Safari seems to have an issue with the envelope flap showing through to the front during the flip-envelope transition. I don’t know if this is an issue with my code or a rendering issue in Safari.

The current demo only uses CSS transitions to perform the animation, with the help of some JavaScript click events to trigger the animations. There are lots of variations that can be done with this, like using CSS keyframes to perform the entire animation sequence. I have done my best to make the example as stripped-down and semantic as possible. I am also providing the source artwork as an editable Adobe Fireworks file.

My wish is that you will find this a useful starting place for your own application, so please feel free to adapt this for your projects. If you do, please send me a link, I’d love to see it.

How To Make a Birthday Card on Word

A birthday card is a greeting card issued or sent to an individual for their birthday celebrations. Birthday card rituals differ from people’s preferences, almost like a birthday cake. The emergence of computers and the onset of the internet era and social media introductions have contributed to mobile birthday cards or even Facebook updates to deliver birthday messages.

To a lot of people, a birthday card is a sweet personal gesture. It is also well known as the most common way to express your care for those you care for.

Benefits Of A Birthday Card

  • When you’re going to someone’s birthday party, turning up with a birthday gift and a birthday card is a gesture of courtesy. • You are seeing someone on his/her birthday

  • If you’re visiting or meeting someone on their birthday, it’s smart to get a card to give them a gesture of courtesy. If you find yourself short of time, you can easily create a birthday card online.

How to Become a Greeting Card Creator | Small Business

By Flora Richards-Gustafson

Annual retail sales of greeting cards in the U.S. are more than $7.5 billion with individuals purchasing seven billion greeting cards per year, according to the Greeting Card Association. A national survey conducted for the association found that nearly 30 percent of greeting card recipients keep their cards “forever.” Greeting cards are a part of the American culture and someone has to create them. According to the “2011 Writer’s Market,” unless you work as a contracted artist or writer for a greeting card company, you can expect to earn $50 to $300 per card idea.

Work as a Freelance Writer or Artist

Sell your ideas to a greeting card company that purchases copy or art from freelancers. Some greeting card companies use materials freelance writers and artists submit.

Follow the guidelines. Each company has its own set of guidelines regarding copy, artistic media and submissions. Some companies offer a copy of their guidelines online, while others only offer theirs in trade publications. If you don’t follow the guidelines, a greeting card company may not consider your submission.

Wait patiently. It can take up to six months to hear back from a greeting card company about your submission. Most companies generally pay upon acceptance.

Create Your Own Line of Greeting Cards

Plan to create two dozen cards initially. In an article reprinted on the Greeting Card Association site, Kate Harper recommends that you start with a small number of cards so you can receive feedback and develop a theme.

Create 50 to 100 designs before submitting proposals to a greeting card sales representative or attempting to sell your work to gift stores. Harper states that publishers and store owners will have a better sense of your identity and skills with a greater number of creations. Moreover, developing a full concept will help you gain credibility.

Create a portfolio of your cards. Take quality photos or actual samples of your cards and arrange them neatly in a binder. Alternatively, you can create a digital portfolio on a CD. According to Harper, you should include a short, handwritten note on cardstock that introduces your line of cards. Label all the materials you submit to a company with your name, the name of your business, address, contact information and the theme of your card line.

Attend industry trade shows. Greeting card trade shows provide a great way to showcase your work to card companies. Craft shows are also good places to meet publishers or sell your creations to individuals.

Showcase and sell your cards online. By creating a professional website, you can maximize your exposure as a greeting card creator. Your site can also serve as an outlet to sell your cards.

Create online greeting card maker | CSS | HTML | JavaScript | jQuery / Prototype | WordPress

Online greeting card maker

I want to make an online greeting card maker that will enable me to upload background images via the backend with text placeholder/s and image place holder/s. The user fills out his own text in the text placeholders and uploads an image to the placeholder and then prints or downloads the final image.

On the backend

I will create different background images (either jpg or PNG).

I will need to be able to add/remove text placeholders. Move them around and define the font, font size and font color.

I will need to be able to add/remove image placeholders and define the position and size of each placeholder. For each image placeholder I will choose if the user will upload an image or if there will be an image library of images (uploaded via backend) that user can just choose from.

There must be an option to add multiple image and/or text place holders.

I will need to be able to choose an option will send the user uploaded image “behind” the background image. If the background is a PNG image with a “hole” in it (i.e. a transparent section) then the user uploaded image will appear behind the PNG background image.

On the front end

The user can choose which template to use (from the selection that has been uploaded via backend).

The user can add text to the text placeholders. If no text is added then no text should appear on the final image. That means that the dummy text should not print if it is not changed.

In order to fill an image placeholder either the user uploads an image or chooses an image from an image library (uploaded via backend). The user should be able to move his uploaded image around / or to make it smaller to fit inside the image placeholder. See example of something similar: [login to view URL]

The user should see a preview of the final product as it is changed (i.e. as the text is added and as the image is uploaded).

Once complete the user must be able to:

Send image by image

Print image

Some comments

The final product needs to be installed on a WordPress site. It can be in the form of a plugin.

The final product needs to be fast. It cannot slow down the site. Performance is a MUST. Do not use a solution that will slow down the site.

See sample backend and front end. This is just a sample sketch to give you an idea of what I am looking for.

Inflation Beats Cards That Greet

Greetings. This is to advise you that greeting cards are also not immune to inflation.

Buyers of cards published by nearly 200 companies are finding things a little different at retail counters and in the mail order market. As an alternative to higher prices, the industry’s major companies are offering fewer low‐priced cards, less glitter, and less color.

The 5‐cent card has disappeared, and rising costs of paper, printing, salaries and transportation are now threatening the 10‐cent and 15‐cent cards. As for personalized cards, handled by some “of the nation’s department stores, those prices, especially when postage costs are added, are competing with a weekend telephone call.

“The same price levels are being maintained that we had last year,” said Dean Sampson, director of product marketing for Gibson Greeting Cards, Inc., based in Cincinnati. “What’s being done is that we are putting a different balance in cards on the racks, and today the consumer is likely to find fewer lower‐priced cards.

This “product mix” means a smaller selection of 10‐cent to 25‐cent cards on shelves with a broader variety of cards with higher prices.

“Five years ago 15 cents was the starting point, but ‘today it’s pretty much the 25‐cent card,” said an official at Hallmark Cards, Inc., of Kansas City, Mo., which is credited with selling at least one of every five cards marketed in the United States.

Hallmark, which also publishes the Ambassador and Snoopy card lines, pulled its 5‐cent cards off the shelves late last year. The same card is back this year but is “slightly larger in size, selling for 15 cents,” the Hallmark official said.

Estimates Difficult

Most greeting card companies are privately held, a situation that makes market estimates difficult. But industry and Government statistics suggest that the greeting card market, of which Christmas cards make up 22 per cent on the average, is worth more than $1‐billion. It is also estimated that more than three billion cards of all types are sold annually in the United States.

Although some in the industry said there had been layoffs by some companies in the effort to cut costs, representatives of companies questioned denied it.

At Hallmark, however, several steps have been taken to reduce costs, which have risen an estimated 15 per cent or more industrywide. Some 6,000 accounts that had been handled by field sales agents are now handled by telephone at a central point in Kansas City, cutting back costs on gas, company cars and time. The sales agents have been reassigned in many cases.

Ribbons, bows, glitter and the shiny foil that used to be common on the 10‐cent, 15‐cent and even 20‐cent cards are missing from most of them now, and are just on the higher‐priced items today. Tighter controls have reduced the waste of paper in lithographing.

Even the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum, both in New York, which sell special reprints at Christ Mas time, have made some adjustments.

This time last year the Museum of Modern Art offered a card in color for 25 cents. This year the cheapest card in color is 30 cents. But one can find two cards in the 20‐cent range, both black and white prints. The highestpriced card in the 19‐card selection of the museum costs $1.

The Metropolitan Museum is offering cards selling at 15 to 50 cents. In 1973 the highest priced card in its catalogue of selected prints was 35 cents. This year it is 50 cents, and the “product mix” as commercial publishers refer to it, is concentrated in the 25‐cent to 35‐cent category. The Metropolitan expects to sell about five million cards this year from its catalogue, which offers 48 selections.

There are also other inflation effects. For example, some boxes that used to contain 25 cards may only have 20 this year, and some that had 20 cards last year may now have only 15.

The distress is not limited to those who buy cards off the rack. A woman who buys imprinted cards each year at Blommingdale’s in New York expressed amazement over the cost of a box of 25 cards.

“It was $23. 75, and I told the clerk I couldn’t believe it,” she said. “That’s almost the same thing it would cost to call 25 people on those weekend telephone rates.”

Despite her distress, the greeting cards were purchased. They will be mailed with 10‐cent stamps, 2 cents more than the postage rate a year ago.

Card for mom

Mother’s Day in Russia is celebrated annually on the last Sunday of November. Traditionally, for this holiday, the Russian Post offers to congratulate their mothers and grandmothers – send a postcard with the most sincere declarations of love.

It’s easy to buy a postcard – they are in every post office. But lately, many people prefer to send homemade postcards. To arrange the sending of non-standard postcards, it is better to consult with the postal operator: is it necessary to put a handmade postcard in an envelope or is it enough to stick the stamps on the card itself.

“A postcard is also a gift. Our family has postcards sent by my great-grandmother. This is a special value. It’s good that my daughter also maintains the tradition: from all my travels, and sometimes just like that, I get wonderful postcards, ”said Lina Tezina, a resident of the Sokolinaya Gora district.

Another popular service is sending postcards online. The service has been around for 4 years. This year the service was especially popular: many Russian Post clients liked filling out postcards “remotely”. Most often, residents of Moscow and the Moscow region delight their grandparents with beautiful postcards.

“I could not come to my grandmother for the May holidays, she lives in another city. Granny was upset that due to restrictions we did not see each other. I decided to please her with a postcard, like in childhood.Without leaving home, I picked it up with the inscription “For you”, wrote the text online. The grandmother liked the postcard and keeps it, ”said Alexandra Apanova, a client of the Russian Post from Moscow.

The dispatch process takes only a few minutes. On the website or in the mobile application, you can choose the design of the postcard, there are cards for a certain occasion and simply with beautiful pictures.

You can send a postcard anywhere in Russia. Payment is accepted online.Upon registration, the client sees the maximum delivery time for the postcard and receives a tracking number by e-mail to track the delivery. The recipient does not need to go anywhere for the shipment: the postman will deliver the postcard.

Information note

Macroregion Moscow includes the Office of the Federal Postal Service of St.Moscow and the Moscow region.

Standard Postcard Sizes – Postcard Sizes

You might think that no one uses postcards in the digital age.Congratulations and invitations are now sent by e-mail, SMS or using various instant messengers, but this is not entirely true. Classic postcards are still used by people for many purposes. Modern technologies have developed so much that they allow you to make cards with any technical characteristics (size, shape, etc.). However, the standard sizes of postcards have not lost their relevance.

Undoubtedly, everyone wants to surprise the recipient with a beautiful and original postcard, pop-up postcards or endless postcards are an excellent example, but this option is not always suitable for one reason or another. Then there are standard postcards that can be played up with a creative design or a number of post works, due to which they will look very original.

The advantage of standard postcard sizes is that they fit in standard envelopes. Often times, invitations or greeting cards need to be sent by mail, so as not to waste the budget on the right size envelopes. After all, it is much easier when postcards are of standard sizes, then they can easily fit into an envelope of the desired size.

So, there are three types of standard postcard formats, which have their own subspecies:

  1. Single postcards (no folds) are the most common type of postcard, which is a fairly budget option. Standard sizes of single postcards are A4, A5, A6 and Euro format (98×210 mm).
  2. Postcards with one fold (in the form of a booklet) are the most popular type of postcards because they look more presentable than single postcards.Standard sizes of double postcards are (folded): A4 format, A5 format, A6 format, Euro format (horizontal and vertical orientation), square size 140×140 mm, and size 148×105 mm.
  3. Postcards with double fold (in the form of a window) are very original postcards that have an unusual type of folding. Postcards in the form of a “window” or “gate” are a type of postcards that have a wide back side and two short front sides, for example, an A5 postcard with double fold has dimensions: height 210 mm, width, it is also the back side 148 mm, front sides by 74 mm.Standard sizes of such postcards (folded): A5 format, A6 format, Euro format and size 148×105 mm.

The originality of postcards is given not only by their shape and size, but also by their design. If you pay due attention to the development of the design, then it is not necessary to spend a large budget on fancy cards. A beautiful design combined with suitable post work (for example, die-cutting, spot varnishing, etc.) can make even a single postcard very original.

A century of mystery: Tolstoy’s sound card to the American people

One of Edison’s favorite inventions, by the way, very deaf by nature, was the “talking machine” – a phonograph, patented by him in 1878. It made it possible to record and reproduce sound on wax rollers.

The first time Tolstoy tried to record on a phonograph was in 1895. Then, while visiting the ethnographer Yu.Blok, who received a batch of new “talking” typewriters from America, Tolstoy read the story “The Penitent Sinner”.

A few years later, in May 1907, the editor of the New York Times, Stephen Bonsal, came to Yasnaya Polyana to visit Lev Nikolaevich. As a token of gratitude for the warm welcome, he promised the writer to send him a new phonograph from across the ocean, which American journalists actively used in their work.

The promised package sailed to Russia almost a year later – in January 1908.Bonsal entrusted the delivery to his friend, New York Evening Journal journalist Arthur Brisbane, who in turn turned to Edison’s Edison Business Phonograph.

When the inventor found out to whom the phonograph was intended, he refused the payment and sent his apparatus to Yasnaya Polyana with the inscription engraved on it – “A gift to Count Leo Tolstoy from Thomas Alva Edison.” This phonograph is still kept in the writer’s museum in Yasnaya Polyana.

In the summer of 1908, Edison asked the creator of War and Peace to make some recordings for him in English and French.

“… It is desirable that you appeal to the peoples of the whole world, – wrote the American, – expressing any idea that could help humanity move forward morally and socially. My phonograms are now distributed in all civilized countries, and in the USA there are already about a million of them. Your glory is worldwide, and I am sure that your appeal will be listened to with eager attention by millions of people who cannot but be impressed by the depth and sincerity of your words, and thanks to such a “mediator” these words will be preserved forever… ”

The Russian classic agreed, and later, in December 1908, Tolstoy’s family doctor D. Makovitsky made a record “about the arrival of two Englishmen with a good phonograph”, who recorded and then reproduced the voice of Lev Nikolaevich.

From the doctor’s personal notes, we learn that Tolstoy “practiced before speaking into the phonograph, especially in the English text.” He prepared for the recording very carefully, was nervous, thought for a long time about what exactly should be addressed to millions of listeners “in all civilized countries of the world.”

Tolstoy’s friend and assistant, V. Chertkov, advised him to read in English an excerpt from the treatise On Life, written back in 1887. If in Russian and French the writer successfully uttered the text the first time, then, as personal doctor, in the English text he hesitated in a few words and decided to rewrite the next day.

However, in the end, the recordings turned out to be very good, they safely survived the voyage across the ocean and were received by Edison, who confirmed their high quality.

Edison’s gift and Tolstoy’s reciprocal gesture did not pass unnoticed by the press, although the journalists in this episode either confused something, or vice versa, historians confused something.

On February 20, 1908, the reputable publication Russkoe Slovo reported that Leo Tolstoy “uttered” several of his interpretations of the Gospel text. Tolstoy delivered his speech to the phonograph in English, which he knows perfectly. ” It is logical to assume that these were the famous rollers. Moreover, a day later, on February 21 of the same year, the American “New York Times” came out with an article “Tolstoy’s gift to Edison: he will send a recording of his voice to the inventor who gave him a phonograph.”However, the fate of these rollers is unknown to Russian “fat scientists”, moreover, everyone doubts their existence, and the facts set forth in the publications of the beginning of 1908, and the obvious inconsistencies in the dates of the recording are declared to be fiction or distortion of the accounts of eyewitnesses of this event.

In January 1909, the inconspicuous Moscow newspaper Rul wrote about the visit of Edison’s closest associates (in fact, sound recording directors) to Tolstoy: “L.N. told four passages: in Russian, English and German. The voice transmission with these rollers is amazingly clear. As we have heard, these rollers will not be distributed. ”

In 1911, after the death of Lev Nikolaevich, the New York Times provided material that his son, Count Lev Lvovich Tolstoy visited Edison, who made an exception for the descendant of the great Russian writer and opened room 12, where he kept everything necessary for their experiences. The sign on the room said it was “closed to all visitors regardless of the circumstances.”

Edison’s album, which included the responses of famous people to his inventions, preserved a note by Tolstoy the father, in which he wrote: “The most powerful force in the world is thought. The more forms it finds for its expression, the more this force can manifest itself. The invention of typography was an era in human history. Another such era will be the emergence of the telephone and especially the phonograph, which is the most effective and impressive means to capture and preserve not only the words, but also the shades of the voice that utters it. ”And the signature:“ Leo Tolstoy ”.

What is the fate of the rollers with the voice of the writer sent overseas? In the State Museum L.Tolstoy was told that, most likely, they died during a fire in the office of Edison’s company in 1914.

However, in his book “The Voices of Writers. Notes of a sound archivist ”, a historian, a sound archivist, Lev Shilov claims that one record has survived. To clarify this in the late 80s. The famous American writer Bel Kaufman, an employee of the New York Public Library Edward Kazinets and curator of the Edison Museum Mary B. Bowling contributed to the last century.

In a letter to the State Literary Museum in Moscow, archivist Mary B.Bowling wrote: “In the past, the question has been raised more than once about what happened to the rollers that Tolstoy recorded for Edison, especially with two entries in English … not the rollers themselves. However, in response to your email, we have again undertaken a thorough examination of some of our unmarked rollers. I am happy to inform you that we have found a roller with Tolstoy’s recording in English. “

Bel Kaufman then came to Moscow, where she met and allegedly showed this roller to Lev Shilov. Unfortunately, L. Shilov soon died, and there rolled the “roaring nineties” and the authenticity of the finding is still in question.

Even before receiving the apparatus, Tolstoy was going to dictate his memories to it. But, the test of the phonograph in action showed that its technical features exclude the possibility of long-term continuous dictation: the wax rolls in the apparatus had to be changed every 10-12 minutes. Therefore, Tolstoy decided to use the phonograph, first of all, to slander the texts of small parables, fairy tales and letters. Phonographic recordings have preserved for us not only the voice of the writer, but also the waltz he composed.

Most of the rollers with recordings of the writer’s voice, which, by the way, were later published on CDs, are now in the Leo Tolstoy State Museum. What happened to the legendary recording, addressed to the civilized peoples of the world and sent to America, remains to be seen.

FANTASY: Master class: “Postcard accordion” (schemes and options)

Girls, hello! Today I am with you, Maria MelMari .

Recently I found in my inventory a Sizzix Bigz Die punching knife – Accordion Flip 3-D Album, which can be used to create postcards, mini-albums, photo frames, etc. – I decided to try it at work. I liked the result, but I came to the conclusion that it is absolutely not necessary to spend money on expensive knives, because you can easily make various options for the shapes and sizes of such works, using only a stationery knife and a ruler :))

So, to create such a postcard, we need:

– transparent plastic for internal parts

1.We take a template. We cut out 8 blanks for the base frame and 4 blanks from transparent plastic from thick scrap paper (as shown in the photo).

2. We glue the plastic blanks to the paper base. To make the card fold freely, we make a double crease on the outer folds (about 2 mm).

3. We connect the resulting 4 parts in series (with glue or 2-sided tape), and glue the remaining 4 frames on the opposite side.

4. Now you need to connect the inner plastic parts. My plastic turned out to be quite thick, it did not bend well and therefore did not hold the glue, I used transparent tape.

5. As a result, we should have such a base for the accordion postcard, which needs to be decorated.

Butterflies flew through the “tunnels” of the postcard 🙂

But for this particular postcard, I used the Sizzix punching knife. And now I want to share options for how to easily make various forms of accordion cards from scrap materials.

For example, using corner hole punches, you can make various variations from a simple square blank. Most importantly, do not forget to leave the side tabs for gluing the parts.

And there can be many such options, depending on your imagination :))

Below I give several template schemes that can be used both for postcards and for mini-albums or photo frames (the first form of the Sizzix knife itself, the rest I drew at random).

Here are more examples of similar works of foreign needlewomen:

I hope I inspired you 🙂

In any case, enjoy your creativity! :))

Scrap Products: “Postcard for you”

Hello, our dear readers and blog guests!

“Vovka looked sadly at the postcards laid out on the table. And why did he buy them! All postcards are, of course, very beautiful. You can’t take your eyes off! But not one, not one of them was suitable for congratulating grandmother on her birthday! It’s a pity that they are all addressed to anyone but grandma:

FAVORITE GIRL

CUTE AUNT

DEAR MOMMY

SPECIAL DAUGHTER

There were no other postcards in the store. Vovka and scored in the heat of the moment such as they were. Birthday is tomorrow! I also grabbed the postcard “TO THE ADORED CHEF” just in case.Painfully good! And now you sit and wonder what to do with them all.

– Invented! – at last Vovk happily slapped himself on the forehead. – I’ll add something, and order!

He grabbed a felt-tip pen and sniffed diligently over the first postcard. A couple of minutes later, the card read: “TO MY GRANDFATHER’S FAVORITE GIRL.” Vovka thought a little more and resolutely added: “… who became his wife.”

Marina Druzhinina “Postcard”

So we decided to devote our new task to postcards ! Anyone! With or without reason, for family and friends or just colleagues!
Let’s just agree that we DO NOT accept chocolate bar ! Tags are allowed.

Works of our invited Designers:

Hello everyone!

Do you often step out of your comfort zone? From time to time I try to try something new and unusual for myself. I think that postcards are not my strong point. Therefore, this time I decided to create it exactly, and even in an unusual palette.

I used black cardstock and scraps of paper from Prima from various collections.

A bit of accents with your favorite sewing stitch, a splash of black ink and dots.

I wish everyone inspiration in completing the assignment “

Hello everyone and thanks for the invitation. For me, one of the signs of the coming autumn is the fact that orders for New Year’s cards are beginning to arrive. And with trepidation you take out the New Year’s collections of materials that were postponed in the spring in order to touch the magic again … For our assignment, I made two New Year’s cards-stars. One of them – with a wooden house, cozy cotton lace and alder cones, seems very cozy to me, and the star with candles and a shaker filled with rustling sequins – is more solemn and festive.I wish all blog readers a festive mood and creative victories!

Thank you very much to the girls for such beauty and for that. what they shared with us and our readers! We are waiting in our assignments!

And now the work of our team:

I don’t know how to make cards one at a time, so I have two at once! This is how I asked the customer the problem, because it took me a long time to choose “what kind”!

Since the postcards were made for Mom’s birthday, I wanted to do something magical and cozy, but at the same time solemn! I think I did it!

For our task “Postcard to you” I decided to make a gentle and airy postcard. For whom? Most likely for a romantic girl who loves lace, ribbons, flowers, butterflies and tea or coffee with cakes.

On assignment, I made a birthday card for my son’s first teacher. It was a very demanding job, because I represented the whole class! Therefore, I chose a win-win theme – flowers)) I added gold embossing on napkins, gold splashes and gold cutting. How difficult it was to photograph this felling .. The main thing the teacher liked)

My postcard for a wonderful person – my husband’s mother))) Soon it’s her birthday and she loves very much when I please her with such trifles))) Well, who doesn’t like things made with soul and especially for you? !!!

Based on the results of the task, TOP and PD will be selected.A PRIZE will be drawn between the participants who are in the TOP!

We are waiting for your work until October 25 inclusive ! Before adding your work, please read our rules.
