NASA-Enhanced Water Bottles Filter Water on the Go

Thanks to NASA bscience missions, researchers are finding that water may be more plentiful in space than we previously believed. The Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite mission confirmed the presence of water on the Moon, and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has returned images suggesting the flow of briny water in parts of the Martian landscape. Now that the Curiosity rover has landed on the Red Planet, it will search for the presence of water beneath the rust-colored soil.

Even so, space is practically a desert, where every drop of water is precious for the human explorers who brave that harsh environment. Complex systems onboard the International Space Station (ISS) collect and recycle moisture using powerful filtration technology developed by NASA and its partners—technology that transforms even urine and sweat into potable water for the ISS crewmembers. These systems are a model for those needed to make trips to distant destinations like Mars.

Even travelers here on Earth are benefiting from one such NASA-derived filtration innovation—part of a product that conveniently provides pure water for everyone from the international adventurer to the weekend warrior.

Technology Transfer

Mohssen Ghiassi, an entrepreneur with more than 30 years of experience developing products for the travel industry, was seeking technology that would enable his latest idea: a water bottle that would utilize an advanced filtration system, one that could be taken around the world, designed specifically for travelers. In selecting an effective filtration media, Ghiassi ran up against the problem of flow rate; water passed through the filter too slowly to provide convenient purification for consumers on the go. Soon, however, Ghiassi’s research led him to a NASA-derived solution—NanoCeram.

NanoCeram originated at Sanford, Florida-based Argonide Corporation. In 2000, the company partnered with Johnson Space Center through the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, with the goal of advancing the company’s unique filtration media for use in recycling water in space. With NASA support, Argonide developed the NanoCeram water purification technology, an innovation that won an R&D 100 Award and a place in the Space Foundation’s Space Technology Hall of Fame.

In 2006, Argonide exclusively licensed the filtration media to Ahlstrom Corporation, an international manufacturer that began mass producing the media for applications in countries around the world. Through Ahlstrom, Ghiassi found the key to his new product.

“We started purchasing from Ahlstrom and developing our product around this particular material because it really is the heart of the product,” says Ghiassi. He founded ÖKO, headquartered in Greenbrae, California, to market his spinoff technology.




The ÖKO water bottle employs two filters: a carbon filter and the NASA-derived media. The bottle itself is made of a thin-walled version of a material similar to that used in most food containers. By simply squeezing the bottle, the consumer forces water through the two-level filter system, resulting in instant purified water.

Ghiassi notes the ÖKO bottle’s NASA-enhanced filtration eliminates multiple contaminates, including disease-causing microbes such as cryptosporidium and E. coli.

The Ahlstrom material, he says, activates when in contact with water, creating an electro-adsorptive charge field that, in addition to the media’s two-micron-wide pores, traps particles as the water is forced through. In a layer less than a millimeter thick, a bacterium would have to navigate through about 400 pores—called the “tortuous path”— while eluding silver ions in the media that kill microbes.

Ghiassi makes it clear that, while the ÖKO bottle is broadly effective, it is not universally so—environmental conditions play a major role. “You can say a product is going to remove 99.99 percent of this or that, but what is the saturation of that contaminate in the water? What is the ambient temperature? What is the pressure you are applying to the bottle? All of those factors are unknowns,” Ghiassi explains.

Drawing on sources such as the United Nations and the UNICEF World Health Program Organization, ÖKO provides its customers with information on the effectiveness of its water bottle in various areas of the globe. This information allows travelers to assess when their ÖKO bottles provide sufficient purification and when additional measures may be needed. The bottle is currently rated effective in more than 120 countries.

Ghiassi says that the ÖKO water bottle is experiencing demand outside of the travel industry. Consumers are buying the product for camping, sports, biking, and for children to use at school. ÖKO has other innovations in the pipeline, including a campground unit that can also be filled from a lake or stream, and a flashlight attachment that converts the water bottle into a nightlight. The filtration material developed through the NASA partnership is the core enabler of all of these products.

“The materials that have been created for specific use by NASA are state of the art because of the extreme conditions they are subjected to when they come into use by NASA,” says Ghiassi. “They are superior to anything else out there.”

Yeti Rambler

The 36-ounce Yeti Rambler looks impressively beefy: Its very appearance promises to preserve your drink’s original temperature no matter what—and the Rambler makes good. Want to go backpacking for a few days and find an ice-studded bottle of lemonade when you return to your car? This is your vessel. We’ve successfully transported ice cream in this bottle (after chilling it with cold water).

As with many well-insulated bottles on the market, the Rambler is made with double-walled, food-grade stainless steel. But it’s tougher and hardier than most: You can drop this bottle from a first-floor balcony and find it undented from the fall. And unlike most double-walled bottles, which require hand washing, the Rambler is dishwasher safe.

The extra-wide opening is both a pro and a con: It means the lip won’t collide with your nose, but it does allow for a possible tsunami of drink should you sip in bumpy conditions. Wider (3.75 inches) and heavier (22 ounces) than most comparable bottles, the body is too big for most cars’ cupholders. But the simple screw-top lid is particularly comfortable to hold, in part because it accommodates three fingers, instead of one or two as other bottles do, and the rounded plastic doesn’t dig into your skin when the bottle is heavy with water.

The 25-ounce Aspen manages to pack impressive water-cooling properties into a streamlined shape. It slides easily into cupholders and the holsters on most totes and backpacks. But this bottle’s comparatively thin walls keep drinks cool (or hot, as you prefer) for an astonishingly long time: EcoVessel claims cold water and drinks will stay cold for 100 hours, making the EcoVessel Aspen one of the best water bottles for hot climates.

We haven’t fully tested that boast but can confirm that this bottle kept water icy for a full day, even in roastingly hot weather. 

That said, ice isn’t always easy to fit inside the relatively narrow, 1.5-inch opening—some larger cubes do get stuck. Once inside, though, they last a long time, thanks to a three-layer construction that sandwiches copper between two layers of stainless steel. It’s recyclable but also durable (with a 100-year warranty!), so you’re not likely to deal with this bottle’s end-of-life issues. Losing it is more likely—leaving some lucky finder to enjoy its sleek good looks.

Klean Kanteen TKWide

  • Highlights: Best for travelers who want to keep all their beverage options open

Sure, you can fill this 16-ounce bottle with water, and we do. But its four interchangeable lids make the new TKWide bottle from Klean Kanteen ready for anything. We like the Café Cap, which features a small opening perfect for sipping coffee that twists closed, saving you and your bag from spills. It also has a metal swing handle that makes it easy to tote along on hikes, but snaps to the side when you don’t need it. The Wide Straw Cap comes with a 10-millimeter, stainless steel–and-silicone straw that accommodates thicker beverages, like smoothies or frozen margaritas. 

The BPA-free, food-grade stainless steel bottle is insulated, keeping contents hot for up to 14 hours or iced up to 47 hours. It’s also treated with Klean Kanteen’s proprietary, chip-resistant Klean Coat finish and backed the brand’s lifetime “Strong as Steel” guarantee.

The bottles come in two sizes, a 21-ounce standard mouth bottle with a sport cap option, and a 32-ounce wide-mouth bottle with a straw lid option. And Hydro Flask’s double-wall insulation will keep your drinks temperature-stabilized for a full day’s hike—24 hours for ice-cold beverages and up to 12 hours for hot ones. 

Bindle Slim

You expect a water bottle to hold water, but because travelers tend to carry more than just that, the Bindle Bottle doubles as a wallet. Unscrew the bottom section of this vacuum-insulated vessel and you’ll find a small storage compartment.

It’s just big enough for a hotel key or a few bills, which makes it handy on the beach: You can swim while your valuables hang out in relative secrecy. The Bindle Bottle is also useful at the gym (you can stash your locker key in the bottle instead of a pocket, which many workout clothes lack).

It’s not, however, ideal for running. Even the new Bindle Slim, a tall, double-walled 20-ounce option that fits in most universal cupholders, is too large and bulky to carry while logging your morning miles. Short hikes are OK: The cap’s broad handle makes it comfortable to hold while walking.

The wide opening makes the Bindle Slim easy to fill and accommodates ice cubes and fruit chunks (for those who like infused drinks). The food-grade stainless steel ensures that no BPA or other suspicious chemicals contact your water. Its matte powder-coat finish even comes in multiple colors and a few patterns—which seems fitting for a bottle that can also serve as a handbag.

Vapur Anti-Bottle

  • Highlights: The collapsible water bottle alternative for people who pack light

The Vapur Anti-Bottle is one of the best travel water bottles for planes and an efficiency expert’s dream. When full, the water pouch holds almost 24 ounces of liquid, but empty, it weighs a mere 2 ounces and occupies about as much space as a wallet. The cap has a built-in carabiner for latch-and-go ease, and the body’s three-ply, BPA-free plastic is pliable enough to fold up into the clip. But don’t let the flexibility fool you—this pouch is durable enough to resist leaks, regardless of how many times it’s been rolled, twisted, or shoved in a full backpack. The Anti-Bottle can also stand on its own when full (or half full, or anything but empty, really).

Refills are a breeze with a hard plastic wide mouth at the cap’s base, and a much narrower mouthpiece protected by a flip top makes for spill-free sipping. Active adventurers will appreciate the DrinkLink tube accessory that converts the Anti-Bottle into a hands-free hydration reservoir. This collapsible bottle alternative is dishwasher safe, so there’s no need to buy a special cleaning tool for the interior. It’s also freezable, meaning it can serve as an ice pack if necessary.

Katadyn BeFree

  • Highlights: The space-saving filter bottle for outdoor adventurers and germaphobes

When empty, this collapsible flask packs down to the size of an apple, yet it delivers huge benefits: Its drinking spout sits on top of a (replaceable) filter that effectively traps protozoa and other disease-causing organisms. That means you can fill the silicone flask from any suspicious source and immediately enjoy clean water wherever you are.

The hollow-fiber filter delivers a pleasingly fast flow that’s genuinely thirst-quenching during exercise. Whereas some filters (including the Lifestraw, below) limit the flow to smaller sips, the BeFree releases a big, mouth-filling gulp—which we appreciated on 14,000-foot Colorado peaks where exertion and altitude left us too breathless to work hard for small returns on water.

We’ve used the one-liter BeFree to drink from roadside streams, backcountry lakes, hillside springs, and airport bathrooms—and can report no resulting ill effects. And you can count on a cartridge to last for several trips: Each one filters 1,000 liters (says Katadyn) and replacements cost $25.

But the BeFree doesn’t filter out funky flavors. It’s designed to be ultra-light and compact, so there’s no carbon element to neutralize foul tastes or smells. The bottle’s squishy design has advantages (packability) and disadvantages (it can be clumsy to hold). Instead, the filter-as-you-sip system is perfect for trail running, backcountry trekking, long-haul flights (no need to trust the airplane’s grimy water tank!), and any trip where you’ll need plenty of water but don’t want to be burdened by surplus water weight.

Lifestraw Go

  • Highlights: The flip-straw filter bottle for off-the-beaten-path travelers

The 22-ounce Lifestraw Go is one of the best water bottles with a filter. It looks like a basic plastic bottle with flip-spout lid, but the “straw” inside is actually a two-stage filter. Its hollow-fiber membrane traps bacteria, parasites, and even microplastics. Then, an activated carbon capsule neutralizes unpleasant flavors and odors.

Yes, you have to suck a bit harder on this mouthpiece than you would from an unfiltered straw. But you’ll hardly grow faint: The hollow-fiber technology delivers a speedier flow than most other filters.

Replacement cartridges cost $15, and since one filter treats 100 liters, that’s generally less than the cost of buying a similar amount of bottled water. The large, bottle-length filter also displaces a significant amount of liquid, so the 22-ounce capacity is misleading. With the filter inside, the Go holds more like 15 ounces.

The trade-off is convenience. The Go is super-handy for city and country travel—especially in places where the drinking water isn’t always trustworthy. It fits tidily into bottle pockets on backpacks and in cars’ cupholders, and the BPA-free plastic is thicker and tougher than most: Lifestraw builds each bottle for a long life of service. Promoting reusable plastics is just one part of the company’s sustainability program: Lifestraw also provides clean drinking water to needy communities. With each Go purchase, the company provides one child with a year’s worth of water.

Larq Bottle

  • Highlights: The self-purifying bottle that makes clean water elegant

The 17-ounce Larq Bottle is expensive, but your money buys you a lot—including a germ-free water bottle. It’s not always easy to remember to wash your water bottle while traveling, but the Larq does it for you. The bottle’s cap is fitted with an ultraviolet light that disrupts the DNA in bacteria and viruses, rendering them unable to reproduce (which is how they cause diseases). And not only does the UV light kill waterborne microorganisms, but it also does so regularly, by automatically firing the UV beam every two hours to kill germs that may have been introduced from your mouth or a questionable water source.

Unlike UV pens, the Larq doesn’t use mercury, which causes environmental problems when it’s tossed into landfills. Plus, the Larq’s UV bulb has more stamina, lasting 40 times longer than mercury-based technology (according to Larq).

The bottle also uses a rechargeable lithium polymer battery that lasts one to two months on a single charge. Pressing the top of the cap activates the light: Tap once for normal purification, or twice for “adventure mode,” which is useful when you suspect your water may be loaded with harmful microorganisms.

Even if you never refill it with untreated water, the Larq is an attractive bottle that uses double-walled stainless steel construction to keep beverages cold for 24 hours or hot for 12. And if it also self-cleans between proper washes? That’s priceless.

Purist Collective Maker

  • Highlights: A lightweight glass water bottle that looks and insulates like a stainless steel one
  • Buy Now: $40, puristcollective.com

Glass bottles are great at repelling flavors and odors, which makes them particularly versatile: You can switch among coffee, water, and wine without any whiff of the previous beverage infiltrating the next. And unlike some plastics and metals, glass doesn’t leach chemicals into your drink.

But glass is heavy. Most glass water bottles (like the silicone-wrapped ones made by Lifefactory) might be great for home but feel too burdensome for travel.

Purist Collective solves this problem by lining its high-quality, surgical-grade stainless steel bottles with an ultra-thin layer of nonporous glass. We filled the Maker with coffee and cream in the morning, then refilled it with water—and discerned no java aftertaste.

The glass veneer is so thin that the Purist weighs no more than other double-walled metal bottles, so it’s easy to tote around all day.

The three bottle models come with basic screw-top caps with carrying loops, but additional caps can be purchased, including a flip-top and a leakproof one that will rotate to let you adjust the flow and sip from anywhere around the top.

The reusable water bottle trend is at an all-time high (even becoming something of a status symbol). With an endless stream of bottles — at different sizes, made from various materials and carrying numerous technological claims — flowing into the market, it’s easy to get lost in the options. It’s also easy to wind up shelling out $40+ for a bottle that does the job no better than one half the cost.

So to determine which bottles are truly worth their price tag, we culled thousands of insulated water bottles down to 16 contenders, after reading through reviews and browsing best-selling bottles across the internet. We then put them through a litany of tests to determine which is best. (For more on our testing process, scroll down.) After two months of testing and a whole lotta water, we were able to narrow down our picks to the three standouts below; we’re confident you’ll find the one that’s best for you and be assured you’re getting your money’s worth.

We found the Healthy Human Curve to be the best overall insulated water bottle. It performed surprisingly well across our most important testing criteria — performance, durability and portability — all at a reasonable price tag.

Our runner-up pick is the 26-ounce Yeti Rambler. It’s a sturdy, customizable bottle that performed slightly better than the Healthy Human Curve in thermoregulation, but fell a bit short overall, especially considering the significant difference in price ($39.99 versus $24.99).

If keeping your drinks the hottest or coldest for the longest amount of time is most important to you, then the S’well bottle should be your go-to, as it performed the best in our thermoregulation tests.

Best Overall: Healthy Human Curve 21 ounces ($24.99; amazon.com)

Healthy Human Curve 21-ounce water bottle

Why we love it in a sentence: The Healthy Human Curve’s ability to keep water cold and its exceptional durability — mixed with its relatively low price — makes it the best choice in the world of insulated water bottles.

The Healthy Human Curve scored the highest overall across our testing categories, and even earned the top spot in durability. After dropping the Healthy Human three times from five feet above concrete on its bottom as well as on its lid, the bottle barely showed signs of abuse, aside from some paint chipping on the bottom. It was one of the only contenders that didn’t transform into wobbly vessels after the drops. Coming in at 21 ounces, its success during the drop test may have been due to it being one of the lighter options, but the 26-ounce Yeti and other smaller bottles we tested still couldn’t live up to the Curve.

Healthy Human also does a solid — though not amazing — job with thermoregulation. In cold-water testing, the temperature dropped 10.1 degrees Fahrenheit over a full 24-hour stretch, which was a bit above the average in our testing pool. The water was still cool and refreshing to drink, however, and we’re confident saying that most people will be satisfied with its ability to keep liquids cold throughout the day.

The bottle fared less well with hot water. It dropped 73.7 degrees Fahrenheit after a 12-hour stretch, ranking slightly below average. So if you’re looking for a bottle that will also do well with hot beverages, you might want to consider another option.

In terms of design, the Healthy Human Curve has what can be described as love-it-or-hate-it curves. Because of this nuanced look, we didn’t score it terribly high for design, but it was incredibly easy to hold. It also comes in 17 different color options, so you do have some aesthetic choice. If the flagship bottle’s curves aren’t your thing, Healthy Human offers a simpler design in the Stein bottle, but keep in mind we didn’t test that model.

The Healthy Human Curve also comes in recyclable packaging, which is nice for those motivated to buy a reusable bottle to reduce plastic waste.

While a dark horse in this race, we can confidently say that the Healthy Human Curve is the best insulated water bottle on the market, especially for its price.

Runner-Up: Yeti Rambler 26 ounces ($39.99; yeti.com)

Why we love it in a sentence: If you don’t mind paying more for a bigger mouth and customizable options, you get top quality with a Yeti.

The Yeti Rambler came just one point short of the Healthy Human in our testing, but its price is considerably higher. We’re still comfortable recommending it as another top option, especially for those who want more lids and customizations to choose from.

The Rambler held up better than most of the bottles we tested in our drop tests and had solid thermoregulation results, actually beating our top choice in keeping water cold and hot. We rated the 26-ounce Rambler higher than the 36-ounce one because it’s skinnier and easier to hold.

In addition to its stellar technical abilities, another great feature is the Yeti’s ultra-wide mouth. You’ll never have trouble filling it with ice, and washing it is much easier than most others (though we still recommend getting a bottle brush — it makes a world of difference). The downside to that huge mouth is it’s difficult to drink out of quickly without splashing water on your face. That cost the Yeti some points in our testing, and knocked our tester’s pride a little bit when he came out of the drinkability test with a soaked shirt.

Thankfully, Yeti offers tons of lids that fit all their bottles, including a straw lid and a chug cap for $12.99 extra, solving the splash problem. Our favorite pairing is the 26-ounce Rambler with a straw lid, though that brings the grand total up to $52.98.

You can also customize your Yeti with engravings of your name, your company’s logo, or even a design from a National Park for up to $10 extra.

Yeti is considerably pricier than the Healthy Human, coming in at a $39.99 base price, and upwards of $50 with customizations. But if you love the different lid options, always remember the family trip to Yosemite or prefer a more standard design, it’s a great choice.

Best for holding temperature: S’well 25 ounces ($45; swell.com)

S’well 25-ounce water bottle

Why we love it in a sentence: Though we had issues with the small mouth and lack of durability, the S’well is the best option for keeping your drinks hot or cold for the longest time.

The S’well bottle really set the standard for thermoregulation, outperforming the rest of the bottles in all of our temperature tests. Over a 24-hour period, cold water (without ice) only rose 7.1 degrees Fahrenheit; after 12 hours, nearly boiling water dropped a measly 43.1 degrees. That might sound like a big drop, but the next-closest bottle dropped 54 degrees.

Though it dominated in temperature, S’well’s downsides are its small mouth and lack of durability. The small opening makes it tough to clean, and not all ice cubes fit (the ones that do, you’ll have to drop in one at a time). Plus, after drop tests, it got so banged up that it wouldn’t stand up straight — particularly disappointing given its $45 price tag.

For some, the real selling point of the S’well is its many interesting design choices, like teakwood and geode rose. If you want a bottle that looks like marble or has a photo of the turtles you’re trying to save, then the S’well bottle is for you. And even if you’re less enamored with the design options, the amazing thermoregulation makes the S’well a good choice — so long as you don’t drop your bottle often.

We tested these water bottles to make sure they meet the demands of everyday use. That meant testing how long they keep water cold, how long they keep water hot, and how they fare during a drop, both on their body and their lid.

Here’s a breakdown of what we tested and how we did it:

  • Hot water test: We poured water just after it had finished boiling (starting temps all measured within a few degrees of each other; ranging from 202.4 and 206) into each of the bottles and measured the temperature with a liquid thermometer immediately after the pour, then after 6 hours and 12 hours.
  • Cold water test: We poured tap water from a sink on its coldest setting directly into the bottles and measured the temperature (starting temps all measured within 1.4 degrees of each other; ranging from 47.5 to 48.9) with a liquid thermometer immediately after the pour, then after 12 hours and 24 hours.
  • Drinkability: We drank from the bottles’ standard caps both while standing still and walking, noting how prone each bottle was to spilling and splashing.
  • Leak test: We shook the bottles, held them upside down and threw them in a backpack for a commute to see if any water leaked.
  • Drop test: We dropped each bottle three times from five feet above concrete on its lid and three times from five feet above concrete on its body. We noted if the bottle was still usable (if the insulation or lid broke), then assessed the amount of dents and other damage.
  • Cleanliness: We tried to clean each bottle with a normal sponge, then with a bottle brush. In this test, we also considered how quickly we could add ice to the bottle.
  • Weight: We weighed each empty bottle in pounds on a food scale.
  • Carrying options: We noted any loops on the bottles, how many average-sized fingers fit inside and how comfortable it was to hold.
  • Grip: We felt the paint on each of the bottles and ordered them from least grippy to most.

We split our testing process into a few different categories to rate each bottle. We weighted thermoregulation and durability heavier than other categories (such as color options) because most of all we wanted to identify sturdy products that do their job for as long as possible.

Under performance, for a total of 60 points we had ratings for both hot and cold thermoregulation, drinkability and the leak test. Durability, worth 50 points, contained the drop tests for both the lid and the body, plus ease of cleaning. Design and aesthetics was worth 15 points, comprising the number of color options, general look and customizability. For portability, worth 20 points, we measured the weight, size, carrying options and the grip of each bottle. And to reach our grand total of 155, we set aside 5 points for any X factors and 5 points if the bottle had a lifetime warranty.

Bottles all got a rating for each test under each category, then we added up those numbers for a total score. We then layered price consideration into the equation to determine the best bottle at the best price.

With our favorites out of the way, here are the other bottles we looked at in our testing pool.

CamelBak Chute Mag ($36; camelbak.com)

This bottle performed quite well, especially with thermoregulation. The lid has a little magnet so it doesn’t hit you in the face while you drink. Its biggest downside: The cap broke off when we dropped it.

CamelBak Carry Cap ($36; camelbak.com)

If you’re considering CamelBak, go with the Chute Mag over the Carry Cap. The lid on the Carry Cap has a big loop, which is nice to hold, but it snapped off pretty easily during the drops.

Hydro Flask Wide Mouth ($44.95; hydroflask.com)

It’s a great looking bottle, but its performance just wasn’t on par with many of the other bottles. The biggest warning we’d give is not to drop it on the lid because it will pop right off and spill water everywhere. The first time this happened we thought it could be a faulty lid, but after a second one had the same problem, we decided to pin it on poor design.

Hydro Flask Standard Mouth ($34.95; hydroflask.com)

The Standard performed equally if not better than the Wide. Plus, it’s smaller, which means less weight to carry around. You can’t pour ice in as fast, but if you’re looking for a Hydro Flask in particular, go with the standard. Just be careful about drops. After our tests it got so damaged it lost its insulation abilities.

Klean Kanteen Classic ($29; amazon.com)

Klean Kanteen had stellar performances with thermoregulation, coming in with the second-highest total performance points. The biggest downsides were the small mouth (with a weirdly tiny lid), and the fact that the body got so damaged it caused the insulation technology to fail.

Klean Kanteen TKWide ($39.99; amazon.com)

The wide-mouth version of Klean Kanteen solves the small-mouth problem on the original bottle, touting a large lid and what seems like a sturdier body. It performed amazingly in the cold-water test, coming in second behind the S’well, but didn’t do well with hot water, which brought down its score. If you want a Klean Kanteen, we recommend this one with the TKWide chug cap.

Miir Bottle ($29.95; miir.com)

The Miir also did well in thermoregulation, outdoing both the Yeti and Sigg. It lost a lot of points during the drop test, during which the lid broke on the first drop. We didn’t test wide-mouth Miir bottles, only the standard. If you’re careful, Miir is a great option for a smaller, portable bottle.

SIGG Hot and Cold ONE Thermo Flask ($31.84; amazon.com)

This bottle performed well during the temperature tests, just about matching the Yeti Rambler. It’s a good-looking bottle featuring a lid with a locking mechanism and a built-in tea filter. Where it really fell apart was when we dropped it on that lid. It broke on the first drop. You can normally order replacement lids (though they’re out of stock now), but compared to the other bottles it just wasn’t sturdy enough.

Snow Peak Kanpai Bottle ($79.95; amazon.com)

This bottle is beautiful, scoring the highest in pure design. But it’s also expensive and scored the lowest in our testing, especially in thermoregulation, where it had the third worst score after the Takeyas. The lid shattered on the drop test.

Stanley Easy Clean ($30; amazon.com)

This bottle performed rather well in keeping water cold, but not nearly as well with hot water. The lid also fared really well during the drops, but the body got large dents on the bottom. What brought its score down were the little things: not as many sizes, lids or color options, it was on the heavier side, and it wasn’t as easy to carry.

Takeya Standard ($29.99; amazon.com)

The Takeya bottle underperformed in our most important test: thermoregulation. It scored the lowest in our pool in the performance category. Their caps feature a nifty little spout for fast drinking that unscrews to reveal a wide mouth, but it just wasn’t enough to overcome the poor insulation.

Takeya Active ($34.99; amazon.com)

The Active is basically the same as the Takeya Standard, with a few nice improvements. Most notably is the rubber boot on the bottom, which is well worth the extra $5 if you want to buy a Takeya. While it didn’t completely eradicate dents, it made a big difference and prevented any paint chipping on the bottom.

Bottle rockets: water could propel tiny satellites of the future into deep space

Since the CubeSat specification was developed in 1999 by Stanford and California Polytechnic, low-cost satellites have become a reality for academic institutions and companies around the world. Their standardized dimensions and off-the-shelf components make for simpler design and production, but there’s a problem: these 10-centimeter cubes, used widely in fields such as meteorology, communications, and aeronautics, are limited by Earth’s orbit. Now, a team of researchers wants to change that — making interplanetary exploration more affordable by crowdfunding the development of a novel thruster that uses water as its propellant.

Their CubeSat Ambipolar Thruster, or CAT, works in a similar way to existing rocket thrusters — by heating up a propellant and expelling it through a nozzle. In this case, however, the CAT will heat its propellant “to millions of degrees instead of thousands of degrees,” says project leader Ben Longmier from the University of Michigan. That heat turns it into plasma, which is then guided with a magnetic nozzle to where it needs to be. “This extremely high temperature,” Longmier says, “allows for the high efficiency of the engine.” That efficiency, combined with its small size and simple components, also makes it very cheap.

That’s important because leaving the safety of Earth’s orbit has traditionally been an expensive task. India’s recent mission to Mars, widely referred to as “low-budget,” cost the country $72 million. NASA’s Mars Observer cost 10 times as much when it launched in 1992. Longmier and his team are seeking just $50,000 to develop their thruster, which can then be attached to a regular CubeSat to send it far beyond Earth’s orbit. “It would usher in a whole new capability for small satellites,” Longmier says.

There are hundreds of potential uses for the technology. A fleet of satellites observing the atmospheres of other planets could be as dense as those tracking Earth’s. Scientists could gather far more data on solar flares, making space weather more predictable. A proliferation of CubeSats would also help identify and tag objects in the asteroid belt for mining or exploration, not to mention the search for life on the watery moons of Saturn and Jupiter or even the creation of an interplanetary internet.

“Space is a risky business.”

However, there are plenty of things that could go wrong between then and now. “Space is a risky business,” Longmier acknowledges. “Things will break. We are pursuing this model of research and development and using space as our new laboratory. In the lab, things break and arc and melt. It’s easy to fix and you’re off running again. This isn’t so much of a problem with the CAT thruster as with a billion-dollar craft, as another model can be launched at low cost. But running out of funding before the engine becomes operational is a real risk, Longmier says. That’s why the team has taken to Kickstarter to raise funds for its endeavor.

A first attempt at raising $200,000 for the project failed this past August, managing to gather just $68,000 before the deadline. Now, the team has launched a second crowdfunding drive with a lower target of $50,000 that’ll allow — with the help of some private investors — for the creation of a minimum viable thruster. The idea is to get the project moving, then worry about the rest of the funding later.

Of course, if the team surpasses that figure, this preliminary thruster can become more advanced. Raising $80,000 means increased efficiency of the nozzle, while $500,000 will allow the team to increase the throttle range. And if funding reaches $1,750,000, topping the funding gathered for the Arkyd Space Telescope, then the team will send CAT into deep space, allowing backers to vote on its destination.

“We should be developing space technologies with ambitious goals.”

These goals may sound ambitious, but Sara Seager, a professor of Planetary Science and Physics at MIT, applauds the team for its ambition. “As a society we should be developing space technologies with ambitious goals,” says Seager, who isn’t involved in the project. “This is a highly credible team and a sound concept. By giving interplanetary capability to small satellites, they’ll open up interplanetary space to a wide variety of people [including] traditionally non-space-faring nations.”

“Getting a plasma thruster small enough to propel a CubeSat would be very useful,” adds Lucy Rogers, project coordinator at the British Interplanetary Society and the author of It’s Only Rocket Science. Rogers was surprised by the choice of water as propellant, however. “Xenon, the heavy inert gas which is the industry standard for electric propulsion, is 1.7 times more dense than water,” she says. “It takes up less volume for the same amount of oomph. Longmier plans to start out with xenon, using it to benchmark the thruster’s performance. He says it’ll take around $300,000 in funding to complete the development of a water-propellant system. “Water is everywhere in the solar system,” he says in defense of the tactic. “Long term, we could refuel at asteroids or depots. Short term, water is easy to store and launch. We can even have astronauts launch our little engines from the ISS without any safety concerns.”

For their support, backers of the Kickstarter drive can secure anything from a silk bow-tie to having their name laser-etched onto one of the spacecraft. Pledge $10,000 and the team will fly you from anywhere in the US to press the button that triggers the first firing of the thruster in space. “With this technology, we can explore deep space and other planets faster and cheaper than ever before,” Longmier says. “First, we would like to make space exploration affordable and sustainable. When I returned to Leningrad and told Pavel Vladimirovich about this, he was indignant, he was shaking, it was scary to look at him.

Pavel Vladimirovich believed that our future belongs to cosmic history.With relocations, with displacements, with the construction of a new life. He was, of course, a dreamer. On the one hand, a lyricist, and on the other, a brilliant engineer, technician and physicist. And Pavel Vladimirovich can sleep well, his dreams will come true.

6. Klushantsev revealed the secrets of his film tricks to the Oscar winner for special effects for Terminator 2

It was Robert Skotak – in the early 90s he specially came to Klushantsev to figure out how he was made films. What he learned, Skotak told in the Danish documentary “Star Dreamer” (2002). Its director Sonia Westerholt emigrated to Denmark from Leningrad in 1969. In the 90s, she again ended up in Russia, where she met with Klushantsev.

For the first time I heard about Pavel Vladimirovich in 1998, she told Fontanka. – My colleague and joint producer of my films from St. Petersburg, Viktor Bocharov, told me about it. I was struck by the biography of Klushantsev, and I remembered how as a child I saw his film “The Road to the Stars” (1957). He impressed me a lot. The fact is that our era, the sixties, was “bitten by space”. I have been living in Denmark for 50 years already – I left when no one else went anywhere.For me then leaving was like flying to Mars. When I found out about Klushantsev, I asked if I could meet this person. I contacted his relatives, they said, of course, come, but Pavel Vladimirovich is already very old and contact with him is almost impossible. I said, “I’ll try.” The first thing that Klushantsev said when I arrived with the operator: “Forgive me, please, I speak very badly. I have no one to talk to. “It was an almost blind, motionless person. But with an absolutely clear head. We recorded a short interview, I went to Copenhagen and started looking for opportunities to make a film.

7. To shoot the first full-length documentary about Klushantsev, he needed to leave

The very first documentary about Klushantsev was the short “Pavel Klushantsev – To the Stars!” (2000) Alexandra Tkali. But the first “big” movie about the director was filmed in Denmark. True, the funds for the shooting were obtained only after the death of the protagonist.

Imagine that you are looking for money for a film about someone else’s aunt – no one knows who Pavel Klushantsev is, – complains Westerholt – Several months passed, they called me from St. Petersburg and said that Klushantsev had died. Then I told Bocharov: “Take the cameraman and film the funeral. I will pay for everything, find the money, most importantly, take it off. ” And he shot – remember, there are these shots in the film, as if a look from the sky? They have become a “calling card” – with them I began to go to international pitches, continuing to look for money for the film.It so happened that my movie about Klushantsev began with his funeral.

I was trying to get international funding for a film – this is a serious undertaking. Now, most of the big documentary projects are funded by the joint production of many countries, and then, twenty years ago, it was all very new. And the condition was for the first money to be allocated by the national television. Therefore, first of all, I had to interest the Danes. I had my own small film company, very young.Therefore, in order to somehow control the process, television offered me one of the editors as co-directors – therefore, all sources indicate that the film has two directors: me and Mads Baastrup. In fact, he really helped me a lot. We traveled to America together, he took a great part in the editing of the film.

8. In the archives of Sonya Westerholt there is a video interview of Klushantsev more than an hour long. It has not yet been made public

On YouTube you can find interviews with Klushantsev of different years, but they are all small.The existence of a long video conversation can be called a sensation for all connoisseurs of the director’s work.

– Viktor Bocharov played a huge role in the making of the film, – shares Sonya. – He provided a huge interview with Klushantsev, filmed on an amateur camera. Fragments from it are in the “Star Dreamer”. But not all of them.

I’m thinking about [making the materials public]. I am pleased to know that there is again interest in both Klushantsev and my film.

9. George Lucas wanted to show Star Dreamer in the United States. But I changed my mind

– When movie Star Dreamer came out, at some point I got an email from Industrial Light and Magic, recalls Sonya. “They asked me if I wanted to come and show them a film. I replied, “Fine, just pay for the ticket.” They write, “We usually don’t do that.”I thought, “Well, don’t.” And then time passed, and someone told me that this company belongs to George Lucas.

I don’t know [what is the reason]. Probably, the secretary wrote to me, who did not know that I was from Denmark, that it was not so easy for me to get to the USA. In general, it did not work out.

10. During the lockdown, the Danes signed up to watch a film about Klushantsev in the queue

– Last year, in the spring, when we were all experiencing a lockdown, I decided that I would do a film lecture at my home, – says Westerholt.- I decided to start with the “Star Dreamer” – showed, told about Klushantsev. The next day people started signing up at my house. And so for several months they came to see and hear about Pavel Vladimirovich. When the borders are open, I want to return to “Star Dreamer” again.

Unfortunately, to say that Klushantsev is popular in Denmark is a huge exaggeration. He has separate fans in every country. But the Danes who watched the film, Klushantsev is not as interesting as a director – more as an inventor, as a talented person with an amazing destiny.
