Foundation mac review: Best MAC foundation 2021 – Every single one tested on half a face

Best MAC foundation 2021 – Every single one tested on half a face

Let’s be real, foundation shopping is a right ‘mare. There’s nothing like handing over your hard earned cash, only to get home and find you picked completely the wrong shade, or that 3 hours later, your face has turned into an actual oil slick.

One of the biggest factors when it comes to what foundation you want, is the level of coverage and that’s where I come in. I thought (to help you guys out), I would test every single MAC foundation on half my face, so you know just how much, or how little coverage you’re getting, before you buy. You can thank me later.

Oh and let’s lay down some ground rules before we start. All foundations were applied with the same foundation brush (except one) and I didn’t apply any additional powder or concealer. But I did fill in my brows and apply mascara, to make the whole thing slightly less horrifying.

1. MAC Studio Face & Body Foundation

Shop now £24. 50

King of the Booth

Coverage: Light

Ngl, I’m slightly bias here because Face & Body is my fave MAC foundation. I was first introduced to it when studying makeup in college, and trust me when I say this is a staple in every makeup artist kit. This is the lightest coverage of all MAC foundations, but it’s buildable. I like it because it feels like you’re not wearing anything, and just evens everything out, whilst leaving your skin, looking like skin.

2. MAC Studio Sculpt Foundation

Shop now £27.50

King of the Booth

Coverage: Medium to Full

From my most favourite, to my least favourite. For some reason, my skin just doesn’t get on with Studio Sculpt. This is a gel based formula, which is incredibly hydrating for drier skin types, but on my combination skin, I find it sits on the surface and doesn’t sink in. This is a medium to high coverage foundation, with a dewy finish. Most heavy coverage foundations tend to be quite drying, so if you suffer with dry skin and want more coverage, this is a good option.

3. MAC Matchmaster Shade Intelligence Foundation

Shop now £29.50

King of the Booth

Coverage: Light

So clearly this isn’t a great shade match for me, but I was pleasantly surprised by this foundation. It’s a cushion formula, so I used the sponge that comes with it to apply, rather than a brush. This gives a similar amount of coverage to Face & Body, just with slightly less glow. If you like a light coverage and do your makeup on the go, this is one for you.

4. MAC Mineralize Moisture Foundation

Shop now £30

King of the Booth

Coverage: Medium

This was my first time trying Mineralize Moisture and I loved it. This is a medium coverage foundation that gives a dewy finish. I found this sunk into my skin a lot better than Studio Sculpt. You definitely need to powder this one, but if you like the finish of Face & Body, but want a bit more coverage, I’m sure you will love this.

5. MAC Studio Waterweight Foundation

Shop now £27.50

King of the Booth

Coverage: Medium

This is a very thin, serum-like foundation, which is pretty undetectable on the skin. I would say this gives a light-medium coverage and would be a good one if you hate the feeling of makeup on your face. I like the fact it took away my redness, without looking like a mask. It’s similar to Face & Body, but with more coverage.

6. MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation

Shop now £26

King of the Booth

Coverage: Full

If you don’t like heavy makeup, you will hate Studio Fix. It smells a bit like paint, it’s full coverage and there’s nothing natural about it. But if you want flawless skin, you can’t go wrong. This used to be my “party” foundation, because it makes your look skin look plastic fantastic in IRL, and in pictures, plus it lasts all day.

7. MAC Pro Longwear Foundation

Shop now £27.50

King of the Booth

Coverage: Full

High coverage, matte finish and budge proof. If those three things sound appealing to you, Pro Longwear has got your back. It’s definitely not a ‘no makeup’ look, but if you don’t want to worry about touching up your makeup throughout the day, this is fab. But be warned, if you have dry skin, this isn’t going to be forgiving.

8. MAC Pro Longwear Nourishing Waterproof Foundation

Shop now £27.50

King of the Booth

Coverage: Full

This is a more forgiving version of the original Pro Longwear. It has all the original benefits (plus it’s waterproof) but I just prefer the slightly less matte finish. If you want high coverage and long-wear, but have dry skin, this would be the one to go for.

See you at the MAC counter.

With thanks to King of the Booth.

REVIEW: MAC Studio Fix Fluid – Cherry Colors

I’ve been raving about the MAC Studio Fix Fluid for ages. And up until now, I never actually wrote about it.

Yes, I may have mentioned it several posts saying how good it is, but not a separate post.

Well, now it’s finally time. This MAC foundation finally gets its own post!

I bought my first bottle more than a year and a half ago when I was shade matched in their store.

Until then I only heard about MAC and never tried anything. It seemed so expensive and why would I buy something so expensive if I can get cheaper products?

Plus I’ve heard all about how the quality went downhill and that’s a bandwagon I didn’t want to jump on.

So, when I got myself into the MAC store I had quite a bit of opinion about the brand

I only tried their baked blush (and loved it) but other than that, the brand remained a mystery for me.

It was a hot summer day; I was sweaty and my original makeup melted. Probably off to hell.
I was offered a small makeover (foundation) to try and see how long it would last on me.
I got the whole shebang – primer, fixing powder etc. Everything.
In the end, I was so impressed by the foundation (how easily it applied and how evenly it looked!) that I just bought it. My idea was to get a sample or three before purchasing it. Well, I liked it instantaneously and needed it in my life.
That must have been the most I’ve ever spent in a makeup store. I got everything they used on my face. *shock*

Anyhow, off I went into the heat and I got so many compliments at the state of my skin. Like how perfect it looks! How well put together I look. Like a doll. What is this sorcery?!

My skin at the time wasn’t that great. It was pretty oily, with lots of blemishes and PIH marks. A bit of an unpleasant look but nothing too drastic (I can say that now, but at the time it was the end of the world).

Two bottles later I can say that I love this foundation. It’s perfect. Exactly what I was looking for.

I love it because:
  • It lasts the whole day
  • Has amazing coverage (medium to full)
  • Easy to use
  • Makes my skin look good
  • Survives practically anything (okay, maybe not rubbing!)

I’ve changed how I use the foundation since I started using it, but my love didn’t fade.

Back then I used 2-3 pumps because I was applying it with a makeup sponge and it would eat up the foundation (what a waste!). I got a full glam look.

Now my skin is in a far better condition so I use only 1 pump and I apply it with my fingers *gasps*. I get an even look that is more on the natural side.

  • Liquid finish
  • medium-to-full coverage
  • Long-lasting formula up to 24 hours
  • Gives a natural matte finish
  • Long-lasting formula
  • No need for top-ups
  • SPF 15

When purchasing the bottle you need to buy the pump separately. Why? I guess it’s marketing. 😛

With a pump, the application is way easier. I can’t imagine using it without one.

The MAC Studio Fix Fluid foundation will even your skin tone and cover any minor blemishes.

PROS

:

+ It will last you quite a bit (6-8 months, depending on use)

+ full coverage

+ great for combo to oily skin

+ stays put through the day and all-weather

+ lots of shades to chose from (mine is NW13)

+ can be applied using different techniques

CONS:

– the scent. It smells like paint. It’s something that I needed some time to get used to.

– the pump needs to be bought separately

– expensive (40-45€)

– it will cling to dry areas

OVERALL:

Despite the MAC Studio Fix Fluid being expensive, it remains one of my favourite foundations. It does exactly what I was looking for. It’s long-lasting, full coverage (or less, if I apply less of it) and I don’t have to worry about reapplication during the day.

To some people, it may feel like wearing a mask, and it does – if you apply too much of it. But even with it, you can get a natural-looking base. I apply it over my morning routine (the last step is sunscreen) and I don’t bother with primers. It, however, does work wonderfully with them. I did use it with the MAC primers (stick and cream) when I had some dry areas that I wanted to address. Now I don’t bother. Who’s going to look so closely anyhow? 😛

I’m all about time management so I’m happy that I don’t have to spend too much time thinking and doing my foundation. I love it and will keep repurchasing it! You can also find it on Notino.

MAC Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 • Foundation Review & Swatches

By Olivia 7 months ago.

At 34 years of age, this is my all time holy grail foundation! I just purchased this MAC foundation for the first time this year, and I can’t believe I waited so long to do so! I have heard all kinds of wonderful things about MAC makeup, especially their foundation. I wish I would have tried it earlier!
Ulta had this foundation on sale; I ended up paying $18,40 for it (between the sale & a coupon I had, could have paid even less if I used my points but I’m saving them). I have been needing new foundation, as I only had my drug store one left. It would have been stupid not to try it, at that price.
Due to COVID, I ordered it via the Ulta app. I was pretty nervous, not knowing what shade I was. Temptalia’s foundation matcher was a life saver here! I used my Double Wear & Huda foundation shades to match, to find my MAC shade – which it came up with NW20 (the number / no name shade, added to my nerves).
Due to COVID/holidays, my package from Ulta was extremely late. As soon as it arrived, I washed/toned/moisturized/primed my face then tore the box open. I was a little disappointed in myself for not buying a pump for it (NOTE: BUY A PUMP!!) The foundation is normally only $30 at Ulta; paying for a pump would make it about the same price as other high end foundations. I used a spatula to get the foundation out, but I definitely just ordered a pump bc I was afraid of wasting too much product if I didn’t.
I used a makeup brush (it cosmetics airbrush) to apply & blend it, then a beauty blender to finish blending. After 1 coat, I had perfectly flawless skin! It wasn’t too matte, nor dry. It just had this natural finish. I figured it was going to be much more matte than it was. I was very impressed with just the one coat. I didn’t use much product either. I had about half left, of what I got out with my spatula – which was wasted, so get a pump!! Lol
After the one coat, I applied cream contour & highlight, a little concealer under my eyes, set my face my ABH loose translucent powder & sprayed with setting spray. My makeup was still set & looked the same, when I took it off for bed. I have used it a few more times since & I’m just as pleased as I was the first day. I definitely recommend this MAC foundation!

MAC Cosmetics Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 Foundation Review

Product Description

MAC Cosmetics’ Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 Foundation has been around the block quite a bit, and maybe it’s not a holy grail, but it does keep beauty enthusiasts coming back. This product is easy to use and apply because of its creaminess, and unlike some foundations out there, it will not settle into fine lines and pores for a smoother, natural finish, unlike some other foundation products out there. Unfortunately, it does have quite a few downsides to its formula. First off, if the skin is very dry, and has not already been moisturized and primed, this product may look very cakey. It also does have a tendency to transfer onto fabrics like shirt collars or even towels. And when first applied, this product has an unpleasant, almost chemical-like scent. So if these are things you, as the wearer, think you can avoid, this foundation might be perfect for your makeup routine.

Positives:

Good for medium coverage

Does not settle into fine lines and pores

Negatives:

No pump

Looks cakey on dry skin

Not-too-pleasant fragrance

Tends to transfer

MAC Cosmetics is a stalwart in the world of beauty, with its wide, beloved range of products, and its ubiquity in pretty much any place where you can buy makeup. Thus, expectations are always high for their products. While the Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 Foundation might not be the brand’s shining beacon, it’s still reliable enough under specific conditions that it could gain a lot of good use in one’s makeup kit.

SUITABLE FOR: All skin types, but may look cakey on very dry skin.

MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation SPF 15: Review, Swatches – Vanitynoapologies

Review, Swatches, Price of MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation SPF 15 in Shade NC 43.5

I am super excited today as it is my first review on VNA. I am so happy to be a part of Team VNA. Today, I have my very first foundation from MAC on board to show. Mac is quite popular for their base products. Like any girl without thinking much I stepped into the Mac store. After trying several foundations from liquids to compact powders, I settled down to the popular Mac Studio Fix Fluid foundation which I will review and swatch today in shade NC 43.5. Did I find my right match? How much did I like the foundation? If you want to know more, then keep reading this blog. Please do share your thoughts about my review and encourage me to spend more.

Base makeup is very important for any makeup look, be it a soft natural or a dramatic look. A foundation which is of good match and finish will win over a lot of hearts. I was very keen to get my perfect match ‘holy grail’ foundation after exploring the beauty world. Before starting my review, I would like to share a few points on my skin. I have a medium wheatish Indian skin tone. My skin is of combination type so I need products which would not accumulate oil or shine after application.

My Review of MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation:

Packaging:

The Mac Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 foundation comes in a solid glass bottle packaging. The bottle is transparent and comes with a black screw type cap. The cap is very sturdy but I dropped it several times and there’s a big crack in my cap. The shade number is printed at the bottom of the bottle. The foundation bottle has a wide opening and you need to buy a pump dispenser separately if you want to take out the product without any mess. I really wished the mac foundation was provided with a pump dispenser as it would be very convenient to take the right amount of product easily. Overall, the packaging is quite heavy but the cap being tight makes it comfortable for travel.

Shade:

The studio fix foundation is available in a number of shades and everyone could get a good match without much hassle. I picked up the shade NC 43.5. The shade is a bit dark for my face color which is quite disappointing. It makes me look slightly orangish, to make it look better I use a lighter colored compact to settle down the tint. I am currently NC42 which means I have yellow undertones to my skin tone. I highly recommend you to test the mac foundation for a good match really well before buying it. You can try the foundation in the store, then walk around the mall and check it under natural lighting before purchasing it.

Formula:

The consistency of the studio fluid foundation is quite thick. But it blends easily with a sponge, flat brush or with a fluffy stippling brush . I don’t like the finish I get by working the product with hands. I recommend you to moisturize your skin prior to application of the foundation as it is quite thick. It doesn’t feel very heavy on the skin. As I have combination skin, I like to set the foundation with a translucent powder or a lighter color powder to avoid oil or shine on my t zone area. The foundation has SPF 15 protection so it would not look good on photographs especially with flash. The formula is quite water-proof henceforth you would require a good makeup remover to get rid of the foundation completely.

Coverage:

The coverage of the spf 15 foundation is medium to full coverage. It does cover up light redness, blemishes and uneven areas of the skin quite well by building it up. If you have very deep scars you might need a concealer to get a flawless finish. The mac foundation doesn’t look cakey which is a great pro for a product with good coverage.

Staying power:

It lasts up to 5 to 6 hours and after that slowly fades away. Priming your skin prior to application of the studio fix foundation and also setting it with a compact powder after application can increase longevity of the product.

What are the pros of the Mac Studio Fix Fluid foundation SPF 15:

  • Sturdy packaging
  • Limited shade selection
  • It comes with spf 15
  • It does not look cakey.
  • Blends without leaving any patches.
  • It doesn’t feel very heavy on the skin.
  • It is long staying.
  • Shade range is really good.

What are the cons of the Mac Studio Fix Fluid foundation SPF 15:

  • It doesn’t come with a pump dispenser.
  • The foundation contains Spf so it doesn’t photograph well.
  • It might not suit very dry skin

Price in India: Rs.2500 for 30ml (I got it for Rs.1800 5-6 months back. An additional 500-700 if we decide to go for the pump)

VNA Rating: 4 /5

Final words: Overall, this is a good foundation and works best for normal, combination to oily skin. I would not recommend it for dry skinned beauties. If you are not on a tight budget and looking for a good coverage foundation then this product will be a good buy. The shade range is wide and excellent for Indian skin tone but picking up the correct shade is quite challenging!

Studio Waterweight Foundation Review – SaudiBeauty Blog

Makeup

It seems like I’m always on the hunt for the perfect foundation.  As my skin changes and with the seasons, My skin needs change and I find myself again looking for a new foundation again from time-to-time.  For me every girl needs 2 foundations, 1 for day 1 for evening and MAC has outdone themselves with the launch of their newest foundation: Studio Waterweight Foundation.

Were they reading our minds, I wonder?  This foundation blows away competition with all its great features and most importantly true second skin like finish.

Waterweight foundation is an ultra-fluid. The beauty of this foundation is it looks completely natural and texture-less on the skin but at the same time gives coverage.  Your skin literally has this not made-up, velvety glow but it’s not dewy.  I loveee how my skin looks when I’m wearing this foundation and the most amazing part is how my skin feels.  It feels super soft and hydrated.   The added SPF 30, just makes it the perfect foundation for day, but it can also work if you want a natural coverage for the evening.

Since its a serum foundation, its best applied directly to the skin and then patted on.  You can use your fingers, a beauty blender (but you’ll end up using a lot more product) and the new #196 brush which was launched with the foundation.  The brush doesn’t absorb much product and it makes it so easy to pat it onto the skin.  You can wear less product and blend it out more for light coverage or pat on a bit more and build it up to a medium coverage.  For normal to dry skin, you can wear the product alone.  But if you have oily skin or are outdoors a lot set it with a powder.  I love the way it looks with MAC Mineralized Skinfinish powder, its beautiful!! So gorgeous!

If you need more coverage on specific areas, use the MAC Pro long wear concealer on top but under the powder.

Mac has a good range of NC & NW colors to match a variety of skin tones.

MAC Face And Body Foundation and MAC Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15: reviews

We all dream of perfect, or at least smooth skin without flaws, and then a pimple will pop up in the firm intention to attract attention!)

Well, have not come up with something more magical than a foundation.

When I find myself in Rive Gauche, I ask myself the question: “When did you just appear?”

It seems that each company produces one foundation a day. I would not be surprised if creams appear for a certain person’s character.

But at the moment I have only two of them and these are:

1. Foundation MAC Face And Body Foundation

“+” When you apply the MAC Face And Body Foundation to your skin, it almost speaks with you: “Can I slightly align?”

The fluid is so delicate and light in texture that it is not felt on the skin. The consistency is like water. The main advantage is that it will not end until you start pouring it on yourself. Such is the economical comrade!

“-” he will not wage war on imperfections of the skin. Its task is to even out skin tone. He will not deal with your enemies. If you have beautiful skin, then it will only emphasize its beauty. No more.

2. MAC Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 – just one of those who will fight against skin imperfections!

“+” So confidently copes with the task of masking that it is better not to interfere with it, but just watch how your skin becomes perfect. You can forget about the proofreader, as he takes on this task too.

“-” due to its dense coating, it can be seen in daylight. And not because it is visible, but because your skin will lead others to suspect that something is wrong here: “Someone helped her in such a result of perfect skin”.

In the end, what do we have? The choice that depends on the tasks that are in front of you: light toning or masking skin imperfections.

If you want to get rid of something and get a full result, then of course – this is MAC Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15

If you are lucky with your skin and you want an even tone, then this will be the MAC Face And Body Foundation.

MAC Pro Longwear SPF10 Foundation

My acquaintance with the tonal bases MAC began many years ago with their Face & Body Foundation, and then I did not understand at all why everyone around them was so enthusiastic about these brands.

Anyone who has tried the Face & Body Foundation knows that it is a very light, almost like water, foundation that gives a very invisible coverage. And for me, who loved to apply more and more foundation, the foundation turned out to be a complete disappointment.

But after getting to know MAC and their tonal base Pro Longwear SPF10 Foundation , I still understood why makeup artists and simple girls love it so much.

What I love about MAC Pro Longwear SPF10 Foundation – read on.

What the manufacturer promises

MAC Pro Longwear SPF10 Foundation is a long-wearing foundation that will last up to 15 hours in all weather conditions. Lightweight and creamy, foundation glides on smoothly and evenly for light to medium coverage.Even in hot and humid weather, the foundation controls oil production, leaving skin fresh, natural and flawless. The base also provides basic SPF protection.

Composition : Water, Cyclopentasiloxane, Trimethylsiloxysilicate, Butylene Glycol, Trimethyl Pentaphenyl Trisiloxane, Phenyl Trimethicone, Polyglyceryl-3 Diisostearate, Magnesium-Sulfate, Dribehenin, Peg-10 Dimethic-14 , Sodium Hyaluronate, Dimethicone, Phenyl Methicone, Polyglyceryl-4 Isostearate, Cetyl Peg / Ppg-10/1 Dimethicone, Methicone, Tetramethyl Hexaphenyl Tetrasiloxane, Glycerin, Ethylhexylglycerin, Silica, Disteardimonimon, Gum, Propylene Carbonate, Alumina, Polymethylsilsequioxane, Dimethicone Silylate, Phenoxyethanol, Sorbic Acid, Chlorphenesin [/ – Mica, Iron Oxides (C) 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), Titanium Dioxide Green (C) 77891, Chromium Oxide Green28 )

What we really have

In short, this foundation is the perfect foundation for combination / oily skin that won’t let you down even in 30-degree heat.

Base very adheres well – even, does not strip or roll on the skin. I prefer to apply with foundation brushes, but she is also friends with her fingers (I tried it on purpose :))

Coverage is closer to medium without looking like you’ve applied tons of tinting on your face. He has excellent pigmentation, due to which, with a sufficient light texture, the cream hides absolutely all redness, traces of acne and other troubles.Sometimes it can sink into the pores, so if your pores are pronounced, it is better to use a primer. My pore size is larger or smaller, so this problem does not bother me too much.

What I really liked about it is finish – it is just like it was specially created for combi leather. The face is not shiny, but also not flat-matte. The base, as it were, balances the shortcomings: where the skin is fatter – it mattes, where it is drier – it gives shine.

I tried to convey the finish of the cream in the photo. For comparison, there is a MAC concealer next to it, which looks very dry compared to foundation

with artificial light

natural light

At the same time, such an effect lasts long enough – 15 hours I did not observe him, but after 10-12 hours on the face his appearance practically does not change. Yes, the T-zone may start to shine a little (just a little), but no more. And even in very hot weather, it does not flow and does not turn yellow (I have such a problem in the area of the bridge of the nose, when after 6-8 hours the tonal base begins to oxidize and smoothly slide from the forehead to the nose. And then my bridge of the nose becomes a bright orange hue, which is not so easy to eliminate :()

Well, another big plus of MAC Pro Longwear SPF10 Foundation – a very large selection of shades, both warm and cold. The main thing is to contact MAC consultants when you first buy a cream, because they know how to choose the perfect color for foundation and concealer. I am at least lucky with MAC consultants 🙂

Whoever I do not recommend this foundation is for owners of dry skin and, possibly, normal skin, because their cream will most likely accentuate dryness and flaking without showing itself properly.

My Verdict : The foundation is perfect for combination to oily skin. Fulfills all stated promises, including excellent holding and matting

Mac OS X: Basic Fund

Possibly, Mac OS X would “take off” without the Core Foundation – but not a fact. I have never seen anything like this object-oriented layer in pure C.Even if there is something similar in the world, CF deserves a separate consideration.

When this layer was designed and implemented, I do not know – I first encountered it in early 2001, when there was no detailed and intelligible “proprietary” documentation yet, Core Foundation development continued, there were a lot of bugs in it – and the tasks of porting in Carbon, an application of almost a million lines has become vital.

Probably, its management and its engineers are most to blame for the resurrection and revival of Apple – but hundreds of third-party developers who transferred their programs to this new unknown world are also involved in this.

This is the sixth installment in a series about turning Apple into a NeXT Apple. Previous Parts:

  1. NeXT Apple.
  2. Apple chooses the path.
  3. Carboniferous (Carbon) in Apple history.
  4. Honeymoon carbonation
  5. A monster named Mac OS X

And we had a hand in this …

Competition and rivalry did not disappear, evil and implacable competitors transferred their products to Carbon, but problems and misunderstandings were common, and people shared what they found out, sometimes through trial and error. And they did it (hiding their names with pseudonyms and not naming their place of work) from the bottom of their hearts, realizing that they all need the platform’s success.

The environment has changed, information has become obsolete very quickly – especially the hacks. Over time, on the forums (there were several of them), Apple engineers began to report their affiliation with Apple, apparently Steve decided that this was necessary and important, and officially lifted the ban. Much of what was reported on these forums would be trade secrets if it were not for the gravity of the situation. It was still hanging by a thin thread.

Problems, an acute lack of detailed documentation and inaccuracies in the one that existed – all this concerned not only the Core Foundation, in my case the most difficult part was IOKit – and there were always people who were ready to answer all the questions – and over time I became help others. That was great. Something like Stack Overflow, but … something subtly different.

We all (a relatively small Mac community of the early 2000s) dreamed of an unimaginably beautiful and fabulous time when the world finally loves Apple, as we do.It happened, very soon, Apple is now all in chocolate – and something that cannot be expressed in words is gone. It was an incredible time, disturbing and unusual.

It’s funny: for 20 years Core Foundation, I understood what it was about, but for the first time I decided to look – and how these phrases translate into general civil Russian. What if the intuitive term has some other meaning?

Yes. This is the “main fund”. And so it was, in fact. The Core Foundation, and the libraries derived from it (Core Graphics, aka Quartz 2D] 6 and others) were and remain the main fund of the system.

They are still alive today. Swift changes them beyond recognition, and it looks like they are waiting for another high point, and again I really want to look there, into this future …

Core Foundation – basics and principles

Calling things by their proper names, without bothering about the inevitable inaccuracy of “their names ”and other variants of analogies, it is neatly rewritten in pure C (ANSI C, mostly) a rather large fragment of the Foundation Kit, one of the two main frameworks NeXTSTEP / OPENSTEP, inherited first by Rhapsody, then YellowBox, and finally, as soon as everything began to settle down which became part of Cocoa.

The transfer of the Foundation part to a pure C environment required a revision of the concepts and essence of the original complex and the ruthless cutting off of everything that could be done without, there was no time for fundamental errors and their correction. In fact, everything was written from scratch, the goal was compatibility and, oddly enough, ease of use.

The role of classes in CF is played by “opaque types”. From the perspective of a CF user, these are references to data types with a hidden structure. Hidden away? But no.The system was still being created, there were not many changes, but an awful lot – and, as a rule, all these changes were unpredictable. An entity that special functions interact with is a good compromise.

The data of these opaque types were called objects – in fact, they were. These were value types, in Swift terminology. Opaque types were combined into a hierarchy, with a base type for which basic functions were defined that are available to all other “classes” of the hierarchy. The role of the base type was played by CFType, for which the functions CFRetain, CFRelease, CFEqual and some others were defined.

In descendant types, all these functions could be used, but usually each of them defined their own, taking into account the characteristics of their “clients”.

CFRetain and CFRelease are similar to the retain and release methods of the base Cocoa class, NSObject are the main tools for allocating and freeing memory for objects. The principles are the same as in Cocoa, somewhat simplified, based on object reference counting.

Since 2012 in Cocoa ARC (Automatic Reference Counting) has been involved in links and counting them, and those who have come to any of the current incarnations of Cocoa with the esoteric practice of “retain / release / autorelease” are unfamiliar – which is a pity. In our time, only those who have learned to take this aspect of reality into account accurately and without much thought could be considered to have mastered Cocoa, and it took several months to master this esotericism. Probably due to stress, the rest was mastered easily, quickly and imperceptibly.

I got to CF ARC in a couple of years.

Cocoa and CF had (and still are) mutually compatible pairs of classes and opaque types, for example, NSString and CFString, data of any of these types could be converted to data of a related type from another library by type casting (type casting ).
