Best Buy & Staples Are Being Sued For Encouraging Piracy & Selling “Pirate Devices”

In recent years, efforts to crack down on piracy have focused heavily on stopping the sale of so-called “Kodi Boxes” and streaming apps that offer free access to movies and TV shows. Now in Canada, Premium TV network Super Channel is suing four retailers including Best Buy and Staples for “urging” customers to pirate TV shows, according to a CBC report.

According to the lawsuit, the four retailers “are advertently contributing to the creation of a culture of widespread infringement and theft.” The lawsuit went on to say: “Their actions are high-handed and unfair to their customers and causing damage to the plaintiff.”

According to the lawsuit, not only did the stores sell Android Boxes pre-loaded with software for piracy but the staff in the store also encouraged customers to commit piracy. In a video posted online by Super Channel, they found staff at several stores telling customers how they can get free TV with these devices. Many of these so-called “pirate devices” sold for between $60 and $200 and came pre-loaded with software to provide unauthorized content including movies and TV shows that Super Channel owns rights to in Canada.

This is one of the first significant lawsuits of this kind targeting a big box seller. In the past, companies like Amazon have always responded to complaints like this by removing the products. Now, big box stores may have to be more aggressive in preventing piracy devices from making it onto store shelves in the first place, or face legal consequences. Cord Cutters News will be following this case closely and will post updates as we learn more.

Grocery stores are out of some staples. Here’s how to make them yourself.

With so many people stockpiling for social distancing, self-isolation and self-quarantine, local grocery stores have been short on some of the staples of our diets — literally, our bread and butter.

Luckily, if your local grocery store is still stocked up on some key ingredients, you can make some of these common foodstuffs for yourself. I know, because I have done it. Writing Sam Tries Things has given me the opportunity to experiment with tried-and-true methods for making things like butter, bread and cheese, as well as more recently popularized items like almond milk. They are all easy, delicious and fun to prepare.

Here are 4 kitchen staples you can make if they are no longer available on grocery shelves.

If you have a little bit of flour (and a few other basic ingredients, depending on the type of bread you want to make), you can make your own bread if your local supermarket is out of loaves. Unless you want to make a quick bread, learning how to make bread from scratch is a multi-day process filled with fun observations and daily maintenance, so it is a great way to pass the time during the social distancing period.

I made sourdough starter from scratch and had pretty good luck with it. The loaf of bread that I made was a little bit spongy, but still delicious. It is also fun to experiment with sourdough starter. You can use all different kinds of flour (so don’t worry if your standard all-purpose flour isn’t in the grocery store) and funky mix-ins such as pineapple juice or raisin water.

Almond milk

Non-dairy “milks” are having a moment. This is not just due to current trendiness, but also because they are suited for consumers who are lactose intolerant or vegan, and they tend to keep for slightly longer than dairy milks (a tip, though: you can freeze milk to make it last longer). Many grocery stores have run out of almond milk, oat milk and the other popular varieties.

A few months ago, I made almond milk and had a great time doing so. Plus, the leftover pulp made an excellent facial exfoliant and baking ingredient. There are also recipes online to make your own oat milk ( I like this oat milk recipe from Minimalist Baker, a blog that I engaged with a lot during my week eating vegan) if you have a nut allergy or just prefer the oaty goodness.

Sticks of butter are in high demand right now. Folks need them for cooking, buttering bread and the influx of boredom baking (I, personally, can attest to that). If you can’t find any though, don’t fret. You can make your own butter easily if you have some heavy whipping cream.

I made my own butter in two different ways: by agitating it in a jar and by using a food processor. Using the “jar method” is a fun activity if you’re looking to keep kids entertained and teach them a quick lesson about fats and colloids, but it isn’t exactly efficient. The food processor method will give you fresh, creamy butter in no time at all. You can also use a stand mixer, if you have one. Butters can be made to be salted, unsalted or flavored in fun ways to make tasty compound butters that will add a little extra flair to your daily meals.

Ok, maybe cheese isn’t your top priority. Still, if you can find a source of rennet (specialty and health food stores are usually a good bet), milk and a little bit of salt, making cheese is a fun, interactive way to pass the time (with undeniably delicious results).

I made mozzarella from scratch with a few simple tools that I already had in my kitchen. Other easy cheese to make for beginners include chevre, feta and ricotta.

Amazon Streaming Adds Staples From MTV, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon

Amazon has announced a licensing agreement with cable television giant Viacom that will allow Amazon Prime members to instantly stream episodes of current and catalog TV shows from the company’s stations: MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, TV Land, Spike, Vh2, BET, CMT and Logo.

The agreement brings Amazon’s subscription video service closer to parity with streaming competitors Netflix and Hulu Plus, both of which have agreements with Viacom. It also gives Amazon Prime content coverage in a few key genre areas for video on demand: comedy, reality television and children’s programming.

According to Amazon’s release, Viacom shows will become available on Prime Instant Video “over the next several months.”

An Amazon representative was not able to immediately provide a full list of shows available under the agreement. However, the series listed in the press release show that while Viacom programming has generally been provided to streaming services on a nonexclusive basis, with the vast majority of shows available on one service available on all the others, there are some titles that wind up as de facto exclusives.

For instance, Amazon’s release touts “several seasons of The Real World” from MTV; Hulu Plus has all 23 seasons of the show, while Netflix Watch Instantly has none.

Hulu, on the other hand, doesn’t have children’s content from Nickelodeon, while Netflix has built a “Just for Kids” section, including a special user interface for some of its streaming devices, catering to parents of small children and built around its catalog of shows from Nickelodeon, Disney, PBS and other content providers.

Let’s face it; The Jersey Shore probably isn’t going to persuade anyone to cut their cord or their Netflix subscription and sign up for Amazon Prime. 24/7 access to a solid catalog of kids’ programming that once required either a Netflix subscription or an on-demand cable box (and for Nick Jr, usually a premium cable tier) just might.

Finally, although Reuters and others reported earlier this week that an agreement with Viacom was “one of the last steps in a plan [for Amazon] to launch a standalone subscription service to compete with Netflix,” for now, streaming video remains part and parcel of Amazon Prime: $79 per year for streaming video, a free library of e-books, and free two-day shipping for most packages shipped from

Attack the Block

Image via Sony Pictures Releasing

Director/Writer: Joe Cornish

Cast: John Boyega, Jodie Whittaker, Alex Esmail, Franz Drameh, Leeon Jones, Simon Howard, Luke Treadaway, Jumayn Hunter, Nick Frost

If you’re looking for an action-packed, high-tension romp through the streets of South London, set your sights on one of the best original sci-fi thrillers in recent memory. Starring John Boyega in an outstanding performance that couldn’t be more caddy-corner to his best-known role in Star Wars, the 2011 film follows an alien invasion in the streets of South London, where a local teenage gang rallies to fight back against ravaging space beasts. In his feature directorial debut, Joe Cornish makes one hell of an impression, balancing the horror-comedy tone, social commentary, and some ripping action sequences, while still leaving space for an ensemble of characters you genuinely care about. – Haleigh Foutch

Image via Universal Pictures

Director: Steven Spielberg

Writers: Peter Benchley and Carl Gottlieb

Cast: Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss, Lorraine Gary, Murray Hamilton

An early calling card of Steven Spielberg’s greatness, and his ability to craft just about any genre into a crowd-pleasing sensation, Jaws remains one of the most flawlessly executed films of all time. A terrifying monster-hunting adventure with one of the most unforgettable scores of all time, courtesy of the great John Williams, the 1975 Oscar-winner is a bonafide classic. After a giant shark terrorizes the beach of Amity Island, an unlikely trio (Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss – all doing exceptional work) team up to hunt the creature down.

Every part of this movie just fires on all dang cylinders. The first act, where menace floats through every scene, makes you curl your own legs up beneath you even though you’re nowhere near the ocean. The quieter middle settles into the performances, inviting you to invest in the oddball trio of shark-hunters,. It all builds to the seafaring finale showdown, when all that threat of the unseen overlaps with your love for these characters, culminating in a bloody, emotionally gripping, holy-shit scary climax that never lets you off the hook. – Haleigh Foutch

Rear Window

Image via Paramount

Director: Alfred Hitchcock

Writer: John Michael Hayes

Cast: James Stewart, Grace Kelly, Wendell Corey, Thelma Ritter, Raymond Burr

You’d be hard-pressed to find a consensus on the best Alfred Hitchcock film, but Rear Window might just be my pick. A near-flawless example of Hitchock’s celebrated combination of high-concept hooks, technical wizardry, and bawdy crowd-pleasing humor, Rear Window is a masterful thriller with two unforgettable performances from leads James Stewart and Grace Kelly.

Stewart plays a professional photographer with a broken leg, who’s endlessly frustrated by his sudden confinement. To pass the time, he takes to spying on his neighbors, and when he suspects one of murder, he and his girlfriend (Kelly, giving a luminous and enchanting performance that will make you mourn the fact we didn’t get to see more before she went Royal) take it upon themselves to investigate. Keeping the camera firmly rooted in the apartment with Stewart, removed from the increasingly intense action happening outside, Hitchcock mines the universally frustrating feeling of being stuck, delivering one of the most stomach-turning, impeccably framed thrillers ever put on film. – Haleigh Foutch

Image via Magnolia Pictures

Director: Toby Wilkins

Writers: Kai Barry, Ian Shorr, Toby Wilkins

Cast: Shea Whigham, Paulo Costanzo, Jill Wagner, Rachel Kerbs

A true slept-on horror gem from the early 2000s, Splinter offers a little bit of body horror meets monster movie a la The Thing, a little of claustrophobic survivalism a la home invasion, and a whole lot of room for some fantastic performances.

Primarily set in a gas station besieged by an ever-evolving and infectious alien goo, Splinter stars Jill Wagner and Paulo Costanzo as a couple whose road trip goes off the rails when they’re car-jacked by an escaped convict (an early standout role from current character actor go-to Shea Whigham) and his drug-addict girlfriend (Rachel Kerbs). Things go from bad to worse when they wind up at that gas station, trapped and tormented by a vicious alien parasite.

Whigham is fantastic here, and his character’s journey from antagonist to no-choice ally provides the backbone for a lot of the film’s finest moments, but it’s also a heck of a creature feature with an original and genuinely frightening monster design. If you’re looking for a good scare that you might have missed, definitely add this one to your list. – Haleigh Foutch

Image via 20th Century Fox

Director: Ridley Scott

Writer: Dan O’Bannon

Cast: Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Ian Holm, Yaphet Kotto

About as perfect a movie as was ever made, Ridley Scott’s Alien is considered an all-out classic for all the right reasons. A terrifying horror movie, a contemplative sci-fi movie, and a gripping character drama all in one, the 1979 film is a masterclass in genre filmmaking. And it all holds up. Following a working-class crew on a standard mission in space, Alien unleashes one of the great movie monsters on them – H.R. Giger’s iconic Xenomorph – mining drama and terror from every move they make in their attempt to survive. From the inner-crew conflict to the overarching themes of capitalist cruelty, Alien is a movie that’s as smart as it is emotionally gripping as it is downright scary. Like I said, it’s pretty much perfect. – Haleigh Foutch

Image via Peace Arch Entertainment

Director: Mabrouk el Mechri

Writers: Frédéric Bénudis, Mabrouk el Mechri, Christophe Turpin

Cast: Jean-Claude van Damme, Sidonie Dumas, Fiszman Marc, Patrick Quinet, Jani Thiltges, Arlette Zylberberg

An unusual entry on Jean-Claude Van Damme’s resume, and indeed, an unusually self-critical film for any actor to make, JCVD stars the iconic 80s martial arts star as an alternative, down-on-his-luck version of himself that moves past self-parody and straight into self-evisceration. Strapped for cash with his career and personal life in shambles, Van Damme makes a retreat to Brussels, only to wind up a hostage in a bank robbery. With a legacy of film heroics hanging over him, Van Damme struggles to step up to his image; with the police, who believe he’s the robber; with his fellow hostages, who expect him to play the hero – even with the actual robbers, one of which is a huge fan.

In the film’s most audacious moment, Van Damme delivers a single-take minutes-long monologue that takes a scalpel to his public image as he reflects on his career, failed relationships, fear of death, and all kinds of grim existential musings. JCVD doesn’t always rise to the challenge of its aspirations, but it’s a fascinating and unique film about celebrity, persona, and deconstructing the myth of the macho movie star. – Haleigh Foutch

Burn After Reading

Image via Focus Features

Writers/Directors: Ethan Coen and Joel Coen

Cast: George Clooney, Frances McDormand, John Malkovich, Tilda Swinton, Richard Jenkins, Brad Pitt

I’ve rarely turned around a film quite as drastically as I have on Burn After Reading, but that’s a Coen Brothers comedy for you! A deeply dark but equally funny reimagining of an espionage film, the 2008 gem stars Frances McDormand and Brad Pitt as two vapid and dangerously stupid gym employees who find a misplaced CD they believe contains government secrets and wind up getting in way over their head when they decide to sell it to foreign powers.

With an ensemble of unforgettable characters and equally enduring performances from players like George Clooney, Richard Jenkins, Tilda Swinton, and J.K. Simmons, Burn After Reading shows the Coens at both their funniest… and their cruelest. The film never goes the way you expect it to – sometimes it’s a laugh-out-loud surprise, sometimes a deeply upsetting one, and more often than you’d expect, both are true at the same time. I didn’t love it when it first hit theaters, but the passage of time has proven it to be a strikingly prophetic comedy about the age of disinformation; a fact that makes the jokes that much funnier while making its scathing streak of cynicism that much more cutting. – Haleigh Foutch

Image via Sony Pictures

Writer/Director: Guillermo Del Toro

Cast: Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, Doug Jones, Rupert Evans, John Hurt, Brian Steele, Jeffrey Tambor, Karel Roden

You can’t really go wrong with Guillermo Del Toro! The champion of genre enthusiasts brought his love for fantasy to the superhero genre with his ambitious adaptation of the beloved Mike Mignola comic Hellboy. Part creature feature, part timey-wimey fantasy epic, part superhero actioner, Hellboy takes Del Toro fave Ron Perlman and puts him in some killer prosthetics as the titular demon baby turned Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense agent. A pulpy romp that never looks down on its flamboyant genre side, Hellboy is witty and heartfelt, coming alive when Del Toro leans into his knack for warm-hearted family tales and creative otherworldly creations alike. — Haleigh Foutch

30 Days of Night

Image via Columbia Pictures

Director: David Slade

Writers: Steve Niles, Stuart Beattie, Brian Nelson

Cast: Josh Hartnett, Melissa George, Danny Huston, Ben Foster, Mark Boone Junior, Manu Bennett

30 Days of Night is one of those movies I always think of when it comes to horror movies that just weren’t appreciated in their time. An absolutely ruthless take on vampire horror, set over the course of a brutal month-long fight for survival, the 2010 film holds up as a gripping and grim film. On a base level, 30 Days of Night thrives thanks to an excellent core concept – an Alaskan town that spends a full month in darkness once a year is besieged by a feral pack of vampires who recognize they’ve got the makings of a 30-day free-for-all buffet on their hands. But the performances and filmmaking are all impressive in their own right, as well.

Danny Huston is a screeching, sinister nightmare and the most horrifying blood-sucker to hit the screen in decades, while Ben Foster gives another one of his wonderfully weasely performances as the wretched stranger who leads the murderous pack to their prey. Josh Hartnett, who was facing a bit of “teen heartthrob turned serious actor” backlash at the time, makes for a commanding and understand lead, which makes an excellent counter to the frantic energy of his vampire assailants. Directed by Hard Candy and Hannibal‘s David Slade, the horror actioner runs into problems pacing out the lengthy standoff at times, but when 30 Days of Night lands the beats, it’s a visceral, take no prisoners siege thriller punctuated with moments of Slade’s signature stylistic flourishes. — Haleigh Foutch

Director/Writer: James Cameron

Cast: Sigourney Weaver, Michael Biehn, Paul Reiser, Lance Henriksen, Carrie Henn, Bill Paxton, Jenette Goldstein, Mark Rolston

Look, it’s freakin’ Aliens. We all know this movie rules. It’s one of the best sci-fi films, one of the best action films, a definitive James Cameron movie, and considered by many the best film in the Alien franchise – which is really saying something when you consider how perfect Ridley Scott’s original movie is. We all know all that, and yet I still can’t help but be blown away by the film’s impeccable construction and execution every dang time I watch it. Sigourney Weaver is phenomenal, cementing herself an iconic figure of cinema as a wiser, more hard-edged, but still achingly human version of Ellen Ripley, who once again has to face down the Queen Bitch of Space, H.R. Giger’s inimitable Xenomorph. But this time, there’s more of those pesky Aliens, everything bigger and more explosive, and she’s accompanied by a team of hard-ass marines to unleash all-out battle.

But Cameron’s real magic here is how he manages to expand the scope and scale of the franchise, without losing the signature ingredients that made it so special (something every subsequent sequel, most of which I genuinely like, failed to do). Cameron makes time for white-knuckle tension and breathless moments of horror amidst his stunning action set-pieces, he maintains the themes of corporate indifference and bodily violation, and similarly, his script amplifies everything we loved about Ripley while evolving the character. It’s a flawless chef’s kiss of a film you can never watch too many times. – Haleigh Foutch

One Night in Miami

Image via Amazon

Director: Regina King

Writer: Kemp Powers

Cast: Kingsley Ben-Adir, Eli Goree, Aldis Hodge, Leslie Odom Jr.

Regina King makes a commanding directorial debut with One Night in Miami, an understated historical drama set during a meeting of extraordinary minds, when Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir), Muhammad Ali (then Cassius Clay, Eli Goree), Sam Cooke (Leslie Odom Jr.), and Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge) spent a night in a quiet Florida hotel room. Based on Kemp Powers’ play of the same name, King’s film digs deep into an imagined discourse spun from those historical events, a celebration of the young black men who carved a space in all avenues of public life during the civil rights movement and an intellectual investigation into their individual methods of activism. The performances are stunners, especially from Ben-Adir and Odom, whose conflicting approaches to their shared ideologies make for the film’s most moving dramatic heights. And King, who would know a thing or two about great performances, just directs the hell out of all of it. – Haleigh Foutch

Director: Darius Marder

Writers: Darius Marder and Abraham Marder

Cast: Riz Ahmed, Olivia Cooke, Paul Raci, Lauren Ridloff, Mathieu Amalric

Don’t sleep on Sound of Metal, the touching new drama might just be Amazon’s best original movie of the year. Starring Riz Ahmed as a metal drummer who rapidly loses his hearing and has to re-learn how to live his life, the film originally debuted at Toronto International Film Festival in 2019 and was poised for a splashier summer release before the pandemic turned the film industry upside down. The film’s arrival on Amazon feels a lot quieter than it should, because it’s a beautiful and phenomenally well-acted story about empathy and rebirth, with yet another outstanding performance by the always-reliable Ahmed. He’s well-matched by Olivia Cooke as his girlfriend and bandmate, as well as Paul Raci as a man who runs a community for deaf recovering addicts in one of the most memorable supporting performances of the year. Sound of Metal is a slow, steady, and compelling portrait of addiction, the sneaky and insidious tolls you pay for its false relief, and why it’s worth the much more obvious tolls you have to pay to take back your life. And it’s a striking glimpse at human grace, reminding us that just because challenging, even devastating new circumstances can alter the texture of our lives forever, that doesn’t diminish the beauty those lives can have. — Haleigh Foutch

Coming 2 America

Director: Craig Brewer

Writers: Kenya Barris, Barry W. Blaustein, David Sheffield

Cast: Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, Jermaine Fowler, Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan, KiKi Layne, Shari Headley, Teyana Taylor, Wesley Snipes, James Earl Jones

Do you love Coming to America? Good news, so do the folk who made Coming 2 America, the new sequel arriving exclusively on Amazon Prime Video this month. Nearly the entire original cast reunites, led by Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall as Prince Akeem and his right-hand-man Semmi, in a slim, but cheerful and vibrant follow-up that sweeps audiences back to the kingdom of Zamunda (and of course, back 2 America) for a new take on the fish-out-of-water comedy that sees Akeem unite with his unexpected heir (Jermaine Fowler), while learning how to be a good king. Directed by Craig Brewer, who previously teamed with Murphy on the magnetic Dolemite Is My Name, Coming 2 America isn’t quite as funny or groundbreaking as its predecessor, but it maintains the sweetness and spirit of the original, even if it sometimes feels like more of a celebration of the 1988 classic than a cohesive comedy in its own right. But guess what, the original is worth celebrating, and Murphy and Brewer make sure you have a dang good time doing it. – Haleigh Foutch

Knives Out

Image via Lionsgate

Writer/Director: Rian Johnson

Cast: Ana de Armas, Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, LaKeith Stanfield, Toni Collette, Christopher Plummer, Jaeden Martell, Don Johnson, Katherine Langford, Noah Segan

From Brick to Looper to The Last Jedi, Rian Johnson has made a career as a filmmaker who brings his singular touch to familiar genres, reenvisioning them with panache while honoring the hallmarks of their respective cinematic staples. With his Oscar-nominated ensemble powerhouse Knives Out, Johnson brings that touch to the old-fashioned murder mystery, staging a twisy tale of death and inheritance through the lens of one fractured, fabulously over-the-top family. Knives Out is funny and breezy, but it’s also gorgeously composed, with some supremely sly performances from its killer cast. It’s honestly worth your time just to watch Michael Shannon scream about cookies, but fortunately, that’s just one of many, many moments that make Knives Out such a delightful and unusual film. —Haleigh Foutch

Director: Steven Spielberg

Writer: Melissa Mathison

Cast: Henry Thomas, Dee Wallace, Drew Barrymore, Peter Coyote, C. Thomas Howell, and Robert MacNaughton

Nobody brings wonder to the suburbs quite like Steven Spielberg, and his 1982 family sci-fi adventure E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial might just be the most beloved and emotionally effective of his whole white-picket-fence bunch. When a little raisinet-looking space goober lands in California and befriends a young boy named Elliot (Henry Thomas), the pair spark up an otherworldly bond and embark on a mission to get “E.T.” back to his home planet safely. Spielberg is really a master at work here, delivering all the awe, emotionality, and preternatural filmmaking ability that have made him a directing legend. Throw in a painfully cute Drew Barrymore as Elliot’s younger sister and partner in covert alien opps, and you’ve got a movie that pulls at every possible heartstring. – Haleigh Foutch

Director: Lorcan Finegan

Writer: Garret Shanley

Cast: Imogen Poots, Jesse Eisenberg, Jonathan Aris

If you like Twilight Zone inspired contained tales of horror and existential dread, boy does Amazon have the right horror movie streaming for you this month. Lorcan Finegan‘s Vivarium is dark as hell and a walloping bummer, but it’s a very good bad time. Imogen Poots and Jesse Eisenberg star as a couple on the hunt for their first home and wind up trapped in a surreal suburban neighborhood from which there’s no escaping. No matter how many streets they drive through, how many fences they hop, they just can’t get out. Then the nightmare baby shows up. On the surface, Vivarium is an effective portrait of the horrors of getting trapped in a white-picket-fence life you never wanted, but the scarier, much more effective undercurrent comes from the way the film embraces the cruel indifference of nature’s life cycles and the helplessness of being stuck in them. — Haleigh Foutch

The Vast of Night

Image via Amazon

Director: Andrew Patterson

Writers: James Montague and Craig W. Sanger

Cast: Sierra McCormick and Jake Horowitz

The indie sci-fi film The Vast of Night is hands down one of the best films of 2020, and a wonderful surprise. Set in 1950s New Mexico, the story basically follows a switchboard operator (Sierra McCormick) and a radio DJ (Jake Horowitz) investigating a strange sound coming through the radio during a big high school basketball game. That premise could go wrong any number of ways, but at every turn Vast of Night pleasantly surprises. It’s Spielbergian in that it clearly draws influence from films like E.T. and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, but also has a voice and style all its own. The wildly compelling screenplay is full of delightfully crackerjack dialogue that evokes screwball comedies of the 40s and 50s, while Andrew Patterson’s direction favors long takes and unique shots that lay the intrigue on thick as the story plays out entirely in real-time. Add in a layer of Twilight Zone-esque terror, and The Vast of Night is a film you won’t soon forget, announcing its writers, director, and cast as new talents to watch. – Adam Chitwood

The Lighthouse

Image via A24

Writer/Director: Robert Eggers

Cast: Robert Pattinson, Willem Dafoe

The Witch filmmaker Robert Eggers earned a whole heap of critical acclaim, instantly held the attention of cinephiles, and helped cement the A24 horror brand with his debut movie. So how could he top it with his second? With an absolutely bonkers, brutal and bizarrely hilarious mythological tale of two men driven to madness on a tiny little island with only each other and their farts to keep them company. A two-hander with sublime performances from Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe as its engine, The Lighthouse affirms Eggers as a singular voice and force of innovative formalist filmmaking that builds new nightmares from the technical tools of classical cinema. What a treat. Genuinely unique, surreal, and ballsy as hell from all involved, The Lighthouse is the pirate-talking, bean-snacking, gods and monsters isolationist nightmare of a movie nerd’s dreams. And once you’ve been thoroughly confounded, be sure to read Vinnie Mancuso’s excellent analysis of the wild ending. — Haleigh Foutch

Writer/Director: Ari Aster

Cast: Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, William Jackson Harper, Vilhelm Blomgren, Will Poulter

There are few up-and-coming filmmakers out there who have delivered the technical mastery and emotional savagery that Ari Aster one-two punched with his first two films. First with Hereditary (see below) and now with Midsommar, his sun-drenched folk horror ode to classics like The Wickerman that sends the audience to gorgeous a summer solstice hellscape of grief, anxiety and codependence. Florence Pugh gives a knockout performance as a young woman dealing with an insurmountable tragedy when she journeys abroad with her checked-out boyfriend (Jack Reynor) and his friends, and winds up smack in the middle of a terrifying pagan ritual. Gorgeously shot, scored, staged, etc., etc., Midsommar isn’t just a deviously elegant spin on a classic horror subgenre, it also packs a wicked sense of humor and pitch-black comedy. — Haleigh Foutch

The Farewell

Image via A24

Writer/Director: Lulu Wang

Cast: Awkwafina, Shuzhen Zhao, Diana Lin, X Mayo, Tzi Ma, Becca Khalil

Lulu Wang‘s Golden Globe and Spirit award-winning gem The Farewell may not have received the Academy attention it so deserved, but that doesn’t make it any less an essential, cathartic watch. Based on her real-life experiences, Wang crafts a nuanced and deeply emotional journey through the highs and lows of loving someone with your whole heart. And the seemingly impossible task of saying goodbye with grace when the time comes.

Awkwafina stars in her best performance to date as Billi, a young Chinese-American woman who returns to China when she learns her grandmother (a truly extraordinary Shuzhen Zhao) is diagnosed with terminal cancer. And her struggles only intensify when she realizes her family intends to keep the diagnosis a secret from her grandma so that she can live the rest of her life in peace. The result is some of the best happy-sad filmmaking this side of Taika Waititi with wonderful moments of wit layered into the rich emotional story and a thoughtful examination of what happens when cultural values clash in a moment of crisis. And if you’ve ever had to say goodbye to someone you love, you won’t find a lovelier or more honest depiction of the crushing weight of mortality when that person is still right in front of you but you know it might be the last time. — Haleigh Foutch

On Thursday, President Biden announced several executive measures to tackle the spread of gun violence – which he called “ international shame ” – across the country.

His statement was made on the same day that the shooting occurred in South Carolina, which killed 5 people.

New measures include steps to tighten regulations on improvised weapons and additional resources to prevent gun violence.

Biden plans to tighten the rules for buyers of “ghost weapons”: homemade firearms, which are usually assembled from separate parts. Such weapons often do not have serial numbers by which they can be traced.

Making a weapon at home or in a workshop is now legal and there are no federal requirements for background verification. According to the White House, the goal is “ to help limit the circulation of such firearms to .”

The second rule will tighten the rules for pistol retainers. The rule would define pistols used with stabilizing braces as short-barreled rifles, requiring a federal license to possess, as well as a more rigorous application process and a $ 200 tax.

During his reelection campaign, Biden pledged to prioritize new firearms controls as president. Among other things, he announced his intention to introduce universal background checks, a ban on the online sale of firearms, as well as on the production and sale of assault weapons.

In his White House address today, Biden called on Congress to urgently pass new background verification laws, close gun fairs and the Charleston loophole, re-approve the Violence Against Women Act he was working on, and renew the ban on assault weapons and shops. large capacity.

  • Gunshows / fairs are public events where weapons are sold in public places such as fairgrounds or community centers. The “loophole” in gun shows is that in many states, private sellers are not required to conduct background checks on gun buyers.
  • The Charleston Loophole allows the automatic transfer of weapons to the buyer within three days if the background check has not been completed.

In addition, President Biden said that the issue of producer responsibility will be high on his list of legislative priorities for gun control.

“This is the only industry in America, a billion dollar industry that cannot be sued,” he said.

“Imagine how different it would be if the same exemption were available to tobacco companies?”

The President said that he “ will use all the resources at his disposal as President to keep the American people safe from gun violence .”

Throughout his speech, Biden insisted that the new measures would not contradict the Second Amendment. He also said he wants to see a national red flag law.

“These laws allow the police or a family member to go to court with a request:“ I want you to temporarily withdraw from the following people any firearms they may own because they are dangerous in a crisis, ” – explained the president …

Small arms

The invention relates to the field of small arms, in particular to small arms for shooting from the shoulder, such as rifles, carbines, smooth-bore guns.

At present, high requirements are imposed on modern small arms, among which special attention is paid to improving the reliability of the operation of both the weapon as a whole and its main assembly units and individual structural elements, as well as improving the ergonomic qualities.

One of the most important tasks in the design of hunting weapons is to reduce their weight and dimensions while maintaining properties such as a detachable magazine, while ensuring the convenience of using the weapon for its intended purpose.

Known patent document WO 2006/048054 A1, F41A 17/36. He describes a bolt-action box for a magazine rifle with a magazine chamber for a detachable magazine, which is closed on the underside by a hinged cover in the form of a plate. There is a trigger on the lid. In the open position for removing and attaching the magazine, the trigger is disconnected from the trigger, and in the closed position, it is connected for subsequent operation of the weapon. The trigger guard is located directly under the magazine shaft.

This solution was implemented in the MERKEL KR 1 carbine, however, it has a number of drawbacks, the main of which is the use of a folding safety clip, which rotates in a vertical plane around a horizontal axis placed on the lower surface of the forend, while the trigger folds back together with the clip … Such a solution has low ergonomics, makes it difficult to change the magazine and reduces the reliability and safety of the trigger.

Known sample of small arms: hunting carbine Blaser R8, having a trigger guard connected to the magazine, described in patent document DE 102006009895 B3, F41A 9/65, F41A 19/10, F41A 17/38.

The disadvantage of this design is its high cost caused by the placement of the trigger on the detachable body of the store, which leads to a constructive complication of this unit and its rise in price, as well as reduces its ergonomics by increasing the dimensions of the store. The use of this solution entails the need to use a mechanism for automatic weakening of the mainspring on the carbine and the removal of the striker from the cocking in order to ensure safety when changing the store.

The closest analogue is a small arms that includes a trigger guard described in patent document WO 102008052729 A1, F41C 7/06, F41A 17/38. A bolt box for a multiple-shot rifle with a magazine shaft for attaching detachable magazines and a bottom surface with a trigger located on it, moving between the closed and open position on the magazine cover for attaching or removing the magazine. The trigger mechanism is located on the guide with the ability to slide along the bottom of the bolt box. This invention has not been implemented in weapons.

The disadvantage of this solution is the long stroke of the movable bracket, required to remove its block from the groove of the magazine cover, the need to additionally press the magazine latches to remove it from the shaft after the bracket is moved to the front position, and the need to manually repeat all these actions in reverse order when inserting the magazine into the shaft.

The objective of the invention is to improve the ergonomic qualities of a weapon with such a trigger guard, in particular, to reduce the overall dimensions, to increase the safety and reliability of the weapon, as well as to eliminate the disadvantages described in the described analogs.

The designated problem is solved using the proposed invention, according to which, in a small arms containing a central supporting frame with a trigger and a shaft for attaching a detachable magazine, a trigger guard movable in the longitudinal direction located on the lower surface of the frame and moving along the guide bracket with the possibility two different positions for fixing and removing the magazine, the trigger mechanism contains two fixed on the slide box and located symmetrically relative to the longitudinal axis of the body, spring-loaded levers made to interact with the magazine and a hook for fixing the trigger guard when removing the magazine, and a latch for stopping the clip when fixing the store. The levers are pivotally connected to the hook with the help of spring-loaded rods, while the trigger guard is also spring-loaded relative to the body. The latch has a latch to block the removal of the magazine.

In the forward position of the caliper, there is a gap between the pressure surface of the trigger and the rocker of the trigger.

There is a trigger guard with a wedge surface that interacts when the trigger is moved with a mating wedge groove on the trigger guard guide.

In addition, the guide of the trigger guard is located at an angle to the axis of the magazine shaft, and the magazine shaft has a trapezoidal cross-section.

This design allows the clip, when the magazine is in the shaft, and the trigger guard in the forward position, to press the magazine from below through the interaction of the surfaces of the clip and the magazine cover using springs attached to the guide clip. In this case, the levers with their protrusions go into the grooves of the store and press the store down with the help of springs. The bracket is locked in the forward position with a latch, the stops of which go beyond the folds of the guide bracket.

To remove the magazine, it is necessary to press on the latch surface, turning it clockwise until the pressed surface is immersed in the trigger guard body, while the latch stops are disengaged from the bends of the guide bracket, and the clip is able to move back. This solution allows you to lock the clip in the forward position during firing and prevent accidental removal of the magazine.

With further application of force to the front of the bracket in the rearward direction, with the latch pressed, the bracket begins to move along the guide, overcoming the force of the springs. In this case, the latch stops pass inside the guide bracket, and the latch remains in the pressed position. When the bracket moves back, the magazine, under the influence of the force of the springs transmitted through the levers, will begin to move downward from the shaft, sliding its inclined surface along the inclined surface of the bracket. The forced movement of the mechanism will last until the levers reach the lowest point when resting on the frame. At the moment the levers reach the lowest point, the front dimension point of the bracket is located behind the rear point of the magazine shaft, so the magazine, due to the trapezoidal shape of the shaft, falls into the shooter’s hand without biting. The hook is pivotally connected to the levers through the rods, therefore, when the levers move to the lowest point, it turns counterclockwise around the axis and rises to the lower position. At this moment, the carriage with a bracket is behind the hook, the magazine has left the shaft, therefore, when the arrow is removed from the trigger guard, the bracket will select the gap between the carriage and the hook under the influence of the springs and remain in the rear position. This allows simple, reliable and safe magazine removal with a relatively short clip stroke.

When the shackle moves back, the safety catch slides along the wedge groove of the guide and moves the safety catch to the “On” position, blocking the trigger from turning. This makes it possible to ensure that there is no accidental release from pressing the trigger by foreign objects when the bracket is retracted or when the magazine is rammed, as well as when preparing for a shot.

When the magazine is sent into the shaft, its grooves interact with the protrusions of the levers and turn the levers counterclockwise, overcoming the force of the springs. The levers, by means of rods, turn the hook clockwise, and when the store reaches the stop in the frame, the hook reaches the upper position, disengaging with the bracket stop – the carriage. The bracket, under the influence of the springs, begins to move forward, pressing the magazine upward with its beveled surface. When the bracket reaches the front position, the latch stops go beyond the guide rail, and the latch turns counterclockwise under the influence of the spring, pushing the stops behind the guide bends. So the mechanism comes to its original state, the bracket is locked in the forward position, the store is in the shaft, the trigger is on the safety catch. Placing the safety button behind the trigger allows you to quickly remove the safety from the weapon just before firing a shot.

The inclination of the guide bracket relative to the shaft axis, together with the inclination of the surfaces of the bracket and the magazine, allows the magazine to be reliably pressed against the frame stop when reloading the weapon.

Turning the latch allows you to close the groove in the latch, blocking the possibility of pressing it and retracting the bracket back. This allows you to provide protection against accidental removal of the magazine when carrying the weapon.

The invention is illustrated in more detail by the drawings, which show the following:

FIG. 1 – Longitudinal section of the trigger: the bracket is in the forward position, the levers are raised;

fig. 2 – Longitudinal section of the trigger: the bracket is in the rear position, the levers are lowered;

Fig. 3 – Trigger bracket on the rail in axonometric projection;

Fig. 4 – Section of the trigger along the axis of the latch retainer at the location of the trigger guard;

Fig.5 – Longitudinal section of the trigger at the location of the fuse.

The trigger mechanism shown in (Fig. 1, 2) includes a bracket 1, which is installed in the guide 2 of the trigger guard with the possibility of longitudinal movement; the case 3 of the trigger, connected to the bolt box 4; two levers 5, fixed on the bolt box 4 and symmetrically located relative to the longitudinal axis of the body 3 of the trigger. Two rods 6 with springs 7 are also arranged symmetrically relative to the longitudinal axis of the trigger body 3.The rods 6 and springs 7 are connected to the levers 5 and allow you to remove the magazine 8 from the shaft 9a of the magazine of the frame 9 of the weapon. The magazine shaft is trapezoidal in cross section for easy attachment and detachment of the magazine. The hook 10 is fixed between the rods 6 and installed in the housing 3 of the trigger. The guide 2 of the staple is located at an angle to the axis of the magazine shaft for securely pressing the magazine 9a against the frame 9 of the weapon and is a U-shaped piece with the lower edges concave inward (Fig.3). In the upper part, the bracket guide 2 has a window 2a for placing and functioning of parts of the mechanism, and a hole 2b for fastening the bracket guide 2 to the frame 9 with a screw (Fig. 1). In the lower “open” part (Fig. 3) of the guide 2 there is a bracket 1 with a carriage 11. The carriage 11 is a reinforcement of a plastic bracket 1. A trigger 13 is installed on the axis 12. a wheel 15 is installed. An axle 16 is installed in the hole in the housing 3 of the trigger mechanism, on which the rocker arm 17 is located. The rocker serves to connect the trigger 13 and the sear 18. In the “Brace in front” position (Fig. 1), the magazine 8 rests with its surface 8a against the surface 1a of the brackets, and a gap is maintained between the contact surface of the wheel 15 and the rocker arm 17. In the upper part, the magazine 8 has two grooves 8b located symmetrically relative to the longitudinal axis of the frame 9, on which the protruding hooks 5a of the levers 5 are pressed.

Let us consider in more detail the fastening and interaction of parts of the magazine extraction mechanism 8.In the bolt box 4, a transverse axle 19 is installed, on which levers 5 are pivotally mounted. Axles 20 located in the levers 5 serve to fasten the rods 6. Opposite ends of the rods 6 are fixed to the hook 10 by means of the axle 21. In this case, the hook 10 itself fixed to the trigger body 3 by means of the axis 22. The springs 7 of the rods are attached to the body 3 of the trigger, clinging to one of their ends for the support 23, the second end of the springs 7 of the rods is connected to the levers 5.

Springs 24 returning the bracket 1 to the front position, located symmetrically relative to the longitudinal axis of the guide 2 of the trigger guard. One end 24a of the springs are attached to the protrusions Pa (Fig. 1) of the carriage 11, and the other 24b – directly to the edge 2c of the guide 2 of the bracket (Fig. 3).

On the trigger guard there is a latch 25 installed by means of an axis 26 (Fig. 1) in the holes of the carriage 11. The latch 25 interacts with its stop 25a with the guide 2, and is also spring-loaded by a spring 27. In the lower part of the bracket there is a latch lock 28, which interacts with the cutout 25b, depending on the angle of rotation. A fuse 29 is installed in the rear part of the trigger guard with the ability to move along the wedge surface 1b of the clip.Depending on its position, it can block the trigger 7 (Fig. 5).

When you press the latch 25 of the staple, the stop 25a of the latch of the staple is disengaged from the guide 2 (Fig. 3). Brace 1 (Fig. 2), under the influence of the muscular effort of the hand directed to the back of the butt (back), overcoming the force of the springs 24, moves back and stops supporting the magazine 8. The traction springs 7 begin to compress, lowering the levers 5, which are pressed by their hooks 5a magazine 8 to the inclined surface 1a of the clip, and after the clip 1 and magazine 8 come out of contact, push the magazine 8 out of the shaft 9a.Lowering under the action of the springs 7, the levers 5 lower the rods 6, forcing them to turn the hook 10 counterclockwise around the axis 22. The trigger 13 is fixed on the carriage 11 and is retracted together with the bracket 1, creating a gap between the wheel 15 and the rocker 17, making it impossible to accidentally shot. The hook 10, rotating about the axis 22 connecting it to the body of the trigger 3, takes a position in which the carriage 11 abuts against it with its protrusion 11b and does not allow the bracket 1 to return to its original position under the influence of the springs 24 (Fig.2).

When the store 8 is placed in the shaft of the store 9a, the levers 5, clinging to the protrusions of the store 8, rise. The rods 6 and levers 5, interacting through the axes 20, 21, turn the hook 10 clockwise. The hook 10 disengages from the carriage 11, and the bracket 1 returns to the front position under the action of the springs 24. The bracket 1, coming into contact with its inclined surface 1a with the inclined surface 8a of the magazine 8, brings it up to the working position. In this position, the protrusion 11b of the carriage abuts against the protrusion 2 g of the bracket guide 2 (Fig.3), stopping the bracket 1 in the forward position. The latch of the staple 25, pivoting about the axis 26 and being pressed by the spring 27, engages with the guide 2 of the staple, blocking the bracket 1 from accidental movement back (Fig. 2). When the latch 28 (Fig. 4) is rotated around its axis, it is possible to block the latch 25 of the staple from being pressed in the backward direction, thereby blocking the removal of the magazine 8.

Operation of the fuse: when the staple 1 moves back, the fuse 29 is automatically turned on (Fig.5), moving along the wedge copying surface of the guide 2 of the staple, blocking the trigger 13 from being pressed to ensure the impossibility of an accidental shot after displacement of the magazine 8.

The proposed technical solution was implemented in the manufacture of prototypes of weapons (hunting carbine KM.1) containing parts and assembly units according to the present invention, which have been subjected to combined tests under various conditions in order to determine the guaranteed product life. The tests consisted of firing a weapon under various climatic conditions from minus 50 to 50 ° C, in conditions of dust and sprinkling. All tests of weapons samples ended with a positive result. Samples of products functioned without failure, no breakages or defects were found.

Details of the claimed small arms are quite simple in design, and can be made according to the traditional proven technology using known technical means.

Thus, the design of the trigger guard of small arms allows for a reduction in the size of the weapon, the necessary reliability and high ergonomic requirements.

90,000 Rosgvardia gives the residents of the NAO recommendations on the safe handling of firearms
  • January 26, 2021 4:46 pm

Compliance with safety rules protects the owner of the firearm and the people around it.Neglecting the requirements of the law and the recommendations of specialists leads to accidents, injuries and death, bringing the perpetrators to criminal responsibility. The main rule is to perceive any weapon as loaded and ready to fire. Safety is also important when handling objects that are structurally similar to weapons, for example, dummies and mass-sized copies. It is unacceptable to use such samples for rallies.

“It is forbidden to point a weapon, even if it is not loaded, in the direction of people and in places of their possible appearance. It is especially important to observe this rule when moving, loading and unloading. An accidental shot can be caused by placing the index finger on the trigger before aiming the weapon at the target. A safe position is to keep your finger out of the trigger guard. Before you shoot on a hunt, during sports training and in other cases stipulated by law, you need to check what is in front of the target and behind it, as well as around the shooter, ”said the center of licensing and permitting work of the Rosgvardia Directorate for the Nenets Autonomous Okrug.
