Halloween Makeup Kits & Face Paint

Halloween Makeup Kits, Face Paint & Face Painting Kits to Complete Your Character

A costume is just a costume; a character comes to life only when you begin to apply the face paint that completes the transformation to clown, zombie, vampire, or ghost. Because the face is the focus, these character makeup kits and face painting supplies are what get you especially noticed; done right, the makeup fades into the background while you become the star.

So which type of face paint is best for you? Non-greasy cream makeup is an all-purpose foundation that glides on fast, covers thoroughly, and washes off with soap and water. Use this for broad areas of color: body art at ball games and all-over coverage that serves as the canvas for face painting details applied with a brush. Grease makeup is professional grade foundation color with a wax base. It won’t crack or peel, even with extended use, and is water soluble like cream makeup but is harder to remove, especially from fabric that comes into contact with it.

Because of this, we recommend grease makeup only for adults and teens with a steady and, but not for kids and face painting booths at fair. Halloween makeup kits and stacks are meant to create a particular character — complete face painting kits with makeup trays of color, brushes, sponges, and sometimes even accessories like fangs, dental putty, and false eyelashes.

Zombie kits, vampire kits, and pirate kits all have different color palettes and accessories specific to the look. For larger jobs or for total body coverage, kits can be combined with cream and grease makeup. As for the kids, body jewelry, lip gloss sets, and makeup sticks and stickers require no expertise at all but help a character shine. Use them for spot color, small details, and jobs that children can manage themselves. All face paint and Halloween makeup is non-toxic and water soluble; most packages come with instructions or basic how-to guides.

7 Best Face Paint For Cosplay, Kids, & Pros Reviewed [2020]

Whether you plan to do some cosplay for an upcoming convention, are a professional face painter, or simply want to have a bit of weekend fun with the kids, a quality face paint will let your imagination run wild and won’t deteriorate under tough conditions.

But here’s the deal:

Finding a top-rated face paint in the world of Chinese knockoffs, questionable ingredients, and lackluster results can be rather difficult.

In fact, some of the best face paints should not only go on effortlessly, but should also resist a moderate amount of sweat, not cause any adverse side effects (be FDA compliant, non-toxic, and hypoallergenic), while still looking great like this face paint from TAG.

While we will go over reviews of all the face paints we looked at in just a minute, we also want to teach you on how you too can spot a quality face paint from afar.

In addition to going over a few key considerations before you make your final purchase, we also go over a tips and tricks that the best face paint artists use in order to make amazing results.

Let’s dive in!

Comparing The Best Face Paints

To provide a bit more of an unbiased look at all the face paints we researched when making this article, here is a table that compares all the key aspects of the face paints we reviewed:

Before You Decide: A Few Things To Consider

When seeking out the best face paint, we kept seeing certain factors bubbling to the surface that were incredibly important when making a purchase.  Therefore, we wanted to share a few of our notes with you to help you with your decision.

Kids vs. Cosplay vs. Casual vs. Pros

The first thing that many people think of when they hear face paint will inevitably be Halloween, but we quickly found out that there are so many more occasions that face paint may be called for including birthday parties, themed events, sports games, anime conventions, general cosplay, theatre performances, etc. (and this was just scratching the surface).

All these events aside, we identified four main categories:

  • Kids
  • Cosplay
  • Casual
  • Professionals

Kids Face Paint

Face paints intended for kids will often have a much brighter palette, FDA compliant, and suited for sensitive skin.

In addition, we found that kids face paint usually came with stencils and starter brushes – making them great for even kids to play with.

So, if you have a budding artist in your family, or perhaps you are looking to get them a unique gift for their birthday or holiday, a face paint kit like this one from Snazaroo is a great way for them to express their creativity.

Cosplay Face Paint

Whether you are trying to recreate your favorite superhero or are creating something from your imagination, face paint for cosplay must have a wide color spectrum and higher quality ingredients to work with.

Should you be attending a convention, you may want to consider alcohol or oil activated paints to ensure they don’t come off easily when walking the convention floor.

This especially holds true if your costume is rather hot and you will likely be sweating (even just a little).

However, if ventilation is not a problem and you will be in a controlled climate, there is no beating the TAG face paint we reviewed – it simply was one of the best face paints for cosplay.

Casual Face Paint

If you plan on wearing face paint only once, or perhaps your need for it is rather minimal, know that some brands, such as Snazaroo, do sell their paints individually.

This can be great should you be heading to the stadium this weekend to cheer on your favorite team and only need a couple of colors at most.

In addition, when you do buy individually the amount of paint you receive in the pot will be much greater – allowing you to use it several times over (or of course to get your friends in the spirit as well).

Pro Paint

Organization and reliable results are key here.

If you are a seasoned face painter or thinking about getting into the hobby, one visit to a 3-year-old birthday will tell you that face painting is always a hit…

…and will typically have the longest line of all the activities!

Therefore, pro brands like Mehron and Graftobian are perfect picks as they not only have a bright palette (which of course will be a hit with the kids), but also have organized pans which help with productivity – especially if the kiddos are getting restless.

In addition, many of the brands on our list are FDA compliant, making them safe to use on kids without adverse effects should any get in their mouth – especially when the cake arrives.

Kids birthday parties aside, as you will see in our reviews in just a minute, brands like Mehron are used in Broadway performances such as The Lion King and Shrek The Musical – proving that they withstand even the toughest situations.

Added Effects

Depending on your desired look, you may want to go with a face paint kit that has additional effects included such as blood, glitter, gems, etc. or even unique application tools (more on this in a minute).

Most kits will only have a starter size amount of these effects (typically packaged as an extra item), however, if you want a wider selection, stores like FacePaint.com and SillyFarm.com will have a much wider selection of special effects worth checking out.

Plan Your Face Painting

No matter the subject, face painting is a tough skill to master.

Whether you are a professional trying to paint extremely excited kids at a birthday party who are bouncing all over the place, or you simply want to put together your best Harley Quinn for a convention, painting on a moving target or in reverse (from a mirror) is tricky.

Therefore, you will always want to have a plan of attack and map out your artwork before you start.

So, before you sit down, make sure that you have all your tools cleaned and prepped while having colors readily accessible.

And for goodness sake, if you are thirsty, have a straw handy!

The Right Tools

While of course the face paint itself is important, it really means nothing if you have poor performing tools.

Just like when painting with oils or acrylics, the type of paintbrush you use can create unique effects.

Whether it’s the round (which is perfect for detailed work), filbert, or flat brushes (perfect for large patches of painting) – you can get much more precision in your face painting.

But beyond the brush, one tool that professional face painters love is the sponge.

Nothing fancy here – just a micro face painting sponge like this one will do the trick.

Why?

A dampened sponge can evenly spread colors across your face with absolute ease (also perfect for body painting as well).

This can create really smooth looking color blocks on your skin that make for beautiful results.

Lastly, a mirror.

Whether you are painting on yourself or someone else – a mirror is the obvious (yet mostly skipped on) supply when it comes to face painting.

While they do sell face painting mirrors, a simple vanity mirror should suffice (just use the non-magnifying side).

Budget

Like all art supplies, the amount you spend can vary greatly from one brand to another.

Typically, with face paints, the more you spend, the better the paint (but not always).

Higher end brands like Snazaroo and Mehron have higher pigment loads (which deliver brilliant results) and quality ingredients that can withstand a beating and still look great afterwards.

But here’s the deal:

If you go to mega online retailers, you may see many obscure brands as well.

Generally, we recommend steering clear of most of these for a few reasons:

One, typically the colors aren’t nearly as bright.

Second, the quality standards are lacking.

If you plan on using the face paint on children or you yourself have sensitive skin, you should go with a trusted brand instead of saving a few bucks.

As tempting as it might be to save $2 on face paint, breaking out in a rash after its been applied is never worth it.

So, make sure you go with one that discloses its ingredients directly on the package, is transparent in their production process, and has positive reviews (outside of online retailers and their own website) to support their claims.

Paint Form

Face paint can come in many different forms including pans/cakes, pens, and pots.

For the most part, all of these paints are nearly identical with their end results – however, there are certain physical advantages to each of them.

Wet pots are perfect for instant application – they don’t require water to activate (although water can be used to thin them) and are great for face painting on the go.

Pans and cakes are the most popular type of face paint.  Like watercolors, pans require a wet brush or sponge to activate before applying.

This type of face paint is also highly portable, making it the preferred choice by professional face painters as well.

Last but not least will be pens/crayonsPens are more suited for kids and beginners who simply want to put a few lines or marks on their face (think accented eyebrows, whiskers, etc.).  They are incredibly clean to use, don’t require any additional art supplies, and are easy to travel with.

Naturally, pens are extremely limited in their application – but depending on your planned painting, they may be more than sufficient.

Color Selection

As you will see with the brands we reviewed below, color selection can vary wildly.

Like watercolors, face paints can be mixed with each other (just make sure to do it on the lid of the case or on a separate palette) and then apply.

This can help you to create additional colors not already available within the pans of the set themselves.

Removal

Removing face paint for the most part is a rather straightforward process.

Simply jump into the shower and scrub away with your go to facial cleanser.

Depending how thick your application of the paint was to your face, you may need to scrub a couple of times in order to remove any remaining stains.

When it comes to oil-based face paints such as CCbeauty Professional Face Paint, it is advised that you use a makeup remover or another solvent that will breakdown the oils as water simply won’t work well here.

The 7 Best Face Paints Reviewed

After several hours’ worth of research, here we narrowed down our list of the best face paints that provide amazing results:

1. Snazaroo Face Paint Set

The most popular face paint brand on our list, and one that delivers when it comes to ingredient quality and vibrant results will be Snazaroo.

There is a lot to like about this U.K. based company.

First, their ingredient profile.

Each one of their face paints are fragrance-free and are made to adhere to both E.U. and US Toy Safety and cosmetic regulations (source).

In addition, their face paints are non-toxic as well – making them safe for use with children.

But as great as the ingredients may be, where it really counts is their vibrancy and color selection.

With 37 base colors (plus metallic and sparkle options), they have one of the widest color selections available.

This allows you to create stunning effects on your face that will turn heads.

One aspect that many artists loved about this face paint was the water-soluble nature.

In order to apply, you simply need a damp brush or sponge to activate and it will be ready to go.

While resistant to sweat, at the end the day, you can easily wash off the Snazaroo paint with warm and soapy water.

Depending on the color, there may some light staining that occurs, but typically a deeper scrub will be able to remove any signs of left-over pigment.

If you want a trusted brand that delivers terrific results and is safe for kids – you can’t go wrong here.

Bottom Line

Overall, Snazaroo is the go-to brand for those who face paint regularly. The wide color selection, safe ingredients, and easy to use nature make them highly accessible. At about $8 per cake, they are slightly more expensive than most, but worth it.

2. TAG Face Paint

Australian based TAG is another strong contender for those looking for a new paint to try in cosplay and professional applications.

With several different color palettes available (regular colors pictured above), you should have no problem finding the perfect paint for your intended application.

When compared to the Artiparty Face Paint Kit (also reviewed in this article), we did find that the tones for the paints contained in this kit by TAG to be a shade or two lighter in color.

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as lighter colors can look a bit more natural and allow your painting to feel a little more ‘real’.

As with any quality face paint, TAG uses cosmetic grade and FDA approved ingredients.

In addition, their products are also hypoallergenic and non-toxic making them safe for all skin types and even kids.

The water activated wells in this set will also make application and eventual removal easy as well.

Bottom Line

Overall, we really loved this face painting kit from TAG. It had one of the highest ratings at several online retailers and delivered stellar results. If you want an upgrade to your face painting kit and don’t mind paying a small premium, get these, you won’t be disappointed.

3. Mehron Paradise AQ Pro Face Paint Palette

A staple product for Broadway productions like The Lion King, Phantom of the Opera, Shrek The Musical, and many more, Mehron is what the pros use in order to create stunning effects.

So, whether you are purchasing a new face paint kit for professional use or even cosplay, it won’t get much better than with the Paradise AQ Pro Face Paint Palette.

What makes this so great compared to others on our list?

First the well design.

With 30 shallow wells total, you have an organized palette that is easy to use with either a brush or sponge repeatedly.

Helping to increase your productivity and ultimately generate better results.

As great as the organization may be, one aspect that many professional face paint artists loved about Mehron was its ability to blend.

Simply add a bit of water and the highly pigmented colors will mix with ease.

While the 30 colors included in this kit are terrific, the ability to generate just about any color in the spectrum through blending welcomed.

As with any face paint, safety is another key issue.

Mehron face paints are vegan (so no problem if incidentally ingested), not tested on animals, and FDA compliant (source).

To verify this, we headed over to the Mehron website and looked at the ingredient profile of the Paradise AQ Pro Face Paint Palette and saw a few of the following ingredients included:

  • Talc
  • Avocado Oil
  • Aloe Vera
  • Cocoa Seed Butter
  • Lemongrass Extract

And many more plant-based products (who would have thought a face paint could pull double duty as a face moisturizer as well!?).

While this set is rather pricey, it delivers uncompromising performance.

Bottom Line

Overall, if you want the same face paint that they use in Broadway productions, it doesn’t get much better than this. The colors blend well and are extremely vibrant. We just wish it was just a tad cheaper.

4. CCbeauty Professional Face Paint

With 24 different colors to choose from in 2 different sets – you have a color palette that rivals the Mehron Paradise AQ.

However, this face paint is starkly different from many of the others mentioned on our list as it is oil based rather than water.

Therefore, there will be no need for water in order to activate the pigment and apply it to your face.

You can simply dip a sponge or a brush into the well and then apply immediately – making this set perfect for travel.

However, given that these are oil-based rather than water, washing them will be much tougher and require additional products.

A waterproof makeup remover like this one should do the trick.

Given that this is oil-based, we would recommend that this only be used on adults and those who don’t have sensitive skin as allergic reactions may occur.

Secondly, before you do apply this to your face, we would recommend doing a patch test by applying a small amount to the inside of your elbow and let it rest for a couple of hours to ensure there are no adverse side effects.

While oil-based face paint may seem like a turn off due to the potential allergic reactions and removal process – there are definitely some key advantages as well.

Namely durability.

If you are a stage performer, heading to a sporting event or festival and may sweat profusely (or plan on drinking a few adult beverages), oil-based face paint can withstand wear and tear.

This paint won’t get runny if you begin to sweat nor will it crack either (just be sure to apply in thin coats).

Some people did mention that staining occurred on their skin even after washing. So, if you do plan on wearing this, make sure it’s not done a day before an important event as it may take time to get fully removed.

Bottom Line

Overall, this oil-based face paint by CCbeauty is perfect for long nights and high-performance situations. The waterproof nature of this paint will look great hours after initial application.

5. Graftobian Face Paint

Like Snazaroo and Mehron, Graftobian has been a fixture in the face painting world for years (est. 1978).

What we (and many others) loved about this particular face paint kit was the pigment concentration.

Each one of the 12 colors in the palette produced vibrant and brilliant results that will make your next painting stand out.

Furthermore, the even pigment distribution ensures that there will be no streaks along with predictable results when blending.

When it comes to performance, these paints won’t crack on the creases of your skin – even when applied to high movement areas (i.e. around the eyes and mouth).

The water-soluble nature makes their removal just as easy as application.

While a bit pricier, this face painting kit by Graftobian is a great set for those looking to take their face painting skill to the next level.

Perfect for both cosplay and pro applications, the bright results can make your characters come to life.

Bottom Line

Overall, we think the Graftobian face painting kit is a great step up from the intermediate brands and one that should generate terrific results we think you will be happy with.

BUY NOW

6. Artiparty Face Paint Kit

With 16 different colors and up to 120 paintings per well, it can get quite a bit of work done before needing to be restocked.

While not sold individually like the Snazaroo, Graftobian, or Mehron brands also mentioned in this article, this paint set is still nevertheless a great starter kit.

The Artiparty face paint kit is also non-toxic, paraben free, and FDA compliant which provides a little extra peace of mind.

Unlike the CCbeauty kit we reviewed, this face paint kit is water based, making for easy paint activation with a damp brush or sponge along with equally easy removal.

If there were any large concerns around this kit it would be the quality control. Some people did experience a small to moderate allergic reactions, therefore you will want to make sure you patch test before applying to your face.

Bottom Line

Overall, this is an affordable starter kit for those getting into the world of face painting but don’t want to pay the steep investment cost of the higher end brands. There have been some quality control issues mentioned about the product.

7. Blue Squid Kids Face Paint

This super casual face painting kit by Blue Squid is perfect for those looking to have a bit of creative fun either by themselves or with a friend.

While the 12 well color palette covers all the basis, what we really loved about this set is the included extras:

This allows kids (and even adults) to try various techniques with the different sized brushes while still having some help through the reusable stencils.

Of course, given that this product is aimed towards kids, the ingredient composition is important.

Blue Squid states that these paints are not only hypoallergenic but also paraben free, vegan, and non-toxic.

This will ensure that there are no adverse reactions should kids get a little crazy expressive with this paint set.

Finally, the return policy. While Blue Squid doesn’t have nearly the same brand recognition as say Snazaroo, Mehron, or Graftobian, they do stand by a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee.

If you aren’t happy at all with the performance of these paints, you can return them with no questions asked – definitely an added peace of mind!

Bottom Line

Overall, these are great for playing around with kids. Their FDA compliant and vegan composition will help to reduce any chance of an allergic reaction. The liberal return policy is a nice touch.

Questions About Face Painting That You Were Too Afraid To Ask

How can (or should) I make face paint at home?

There are many online tutorials on how to make face paint at home.  While we are never one to discourage DIY applications (after all we are an art and craft centric site!) – we think it’s best to skip the DIY route and go with a proper face paint.

Not only will the pigments be evenly mixed which make for better results, but the ingredients have been tested to ensure there is no adverse skin reactions.

Secondly, the performance of professionally made face paints will nearly always outlast DIY solutions.

Where to buy face paint online?

While nearly all the products we mentioned above are found on large retailers like Amazon, there are many face and body paint retailers as well (who knew!).

A few that caught our eye were the following:

Now, its worth mentioning that we did publish a post recently that outlined the best online art supply stores as well.

There may be a few retailers there that also sell face paints that are worth checking out.

Can I use acrylic or oil paint instead of face paint?

No.

While both of these mediums are terrific in artistic applications, acrylic and oil paints aren’t well suited for body or face application.

Acrylic paints are susceptible to cracking and will have troubles with the creases of your skin.  Secondly, when applied to your face, acrylic paint may cause allergic reactions or pimples to appear – so don’t do this.

In addition, oil paints may take days to dry – so it really won’t be logical to use them.

Many of the face paints we reviewed in this guide are plant based, fast drying, and FDA compliant.

Don’t try to use your artists paints as a substitute.

Where do I begin with face painting?

Here were a few online tutorials along with tips and tricks that expert painters used to create stunning effects while face painting:

Best Face Paint: Selection Process

Finding the best face paint in 2020 proved to be rather difficult.  With so many brands available, it’s hard to cut through all the ‘fluff’ to find a face paint that not only will look and perform great, but also won’t cause severe skin reactions.

However, after all the research we did, we feel confident in our selection above – and we think you will too!

But as hard as we tried to find the perfect face paint for you, we do have limited resources and were unable to review every single one on the market.

So, if you feel like one should be added to the list, please get in touch with us, and our team can take a look at it and review accordingly.

We hope you enjoyed reading this guide as much as we did writing it – now go have fun and paint some faces!!!

The Best Halloween Face Paint & Makeup 2020

With the pandemic still under way, a lot of things look different right now, and you can add Halloween to that list. The CDC is advising against traditional trick-or-treating, crowded costume parties, and basically anything that you’d associate with Halloween, calling these activities “higher risk” for contracting and spreading COVID-19. But you don’t have to let that spoil all of your fun. You can still dress up — for a virtual party, or one with your roommates, or for Instagram. And since most Zoom calls happen from the waist up, doing a full face of Halloween makeup — like a vampire, or a dog, or even Bert and Ernie — saves you the trouble of putting on a whole costume.

But you shouldn’t just put anything on your face. Using the wrong products, like lower-priced makeup or even literal paint, can cause irritation and dryness that, depending on your skin type, could take a while to clear up. So, to find the best skin-friendly options, we asked four special-effects makeup artists — including a kids’ specialist and a full-body statue-style painter — for their top picks. And if you’re worried about taking it off at the end of the night, check out our roundup of the best makeup remover.

Nearly every makeup artist we spoke with mentioned Mehron Liquid Makeup, a professional-quality product that is “user friendly and performs very well,” as special-effects makeup artist Elly Supalo puts it. “With water-based makeup, once it’s dry, it’s set,” says Morgan Wells, founder of Jane Doe Makeup. She likes that Mehron’s paints, unlike some cheaper alternatives, are free of any alcohol-based ingredients, which, she says, “will dry out your skin more than any other makeup.” The colors are also buildable, so you can add as many layers as you need to get the perfect shade.

If you don’t want to mess with liquid makeup, you can try this palette, which also comes from Mehron. Supalo particularly likes this because it’s “very vibrant” when you apply it. Wells likes it too because it works for everyone, “from body painters to clowns and pro makeup artists.” And because the paints easily wash off with water, Wells likes that “you walk away from the night with your face intact and not left with 50,000 colors when you ‘remove’ it.”

Ben Nye Sr. worked as a stage makeup artist for 20th Century Fox, so when he founded his brand, he created it with stage and special-effects makeup artists in mind — so that means the makeup is particularly good for Halloween. His products are a touch more expensive than Mehron, but Supalo likes his Creme Palette because it’s “buildable upon application, which is great for blending into other colors.” To apply, she recommends using any makeup brushes — “or regular paintbrushes even” — and sponges. Then, once you’re done, apply some powder to make sure the paint won’t move.

If you’re going for gold (or silver, copper, or even metallic lavender) photographer and body painter Michael E. Allen likes Mehron’s powders for both detailing and bold, full-body looks. “It goes on dry [or] wet, and it stays,” he says. “I’ve never had any complaints from clients I’ve used it on.”

When it comes to children’s sensitive skin, Stacy Chen, artist and co-founder of kids’ face-painting company Silly Cheeks, cautions that “parents should avoid using markers or arts-and-craft paint that they already have at home. These are not meant to be used on the skin and have harsh chemicals.” Instead, she recommends choosing organic makeup, like these paints from Go Green, which are hypoallergenic, vegan, and free of fragrances and parabens.

If you’re “enhancing” your appearance with a crooked witch nose or a gaping wound, Wells advises against using the cheap adhesives — usually spirit gum — that typically come with props, as, she says, they’re “not fun to put on, and not fun to take off.” Instead, she likes Ben Nye’s liquid latex, which is both an adhesive and a blending tool. “That’s your best bet when applying a prosthetic,” she says.

Face Painting For Kids & Adults

Getty Images

Face painting kits spell out summertime F-U-N, and face painting for kids (and adults!) is a trend we hope never goes away — even if you’re currently social distancing. While it’s a staple at any outdoor event like carnivals, festivals, school fundraisers, and zoos, consider bringing the make-believe magic to your own backyard. Watching little kids’ faces light up with excitement as they eagerly flip through the book of designs is like watching someone decide on their first tattoo. To tiny humans, getting their faces painted is a very big deal and requires careful thought. No costume or dress-up session is complete without face paint, a wild hairstyle, and some bright nail polish if you really want to go all out. And while face masks and face shields may interfere with their artistic expression for now, there’s no reason you can’t channel your inner arteest in the comfort and safety of your own home. They may mess it up a bit in the kiddie pool out back or by stuffing their face with ice cream, but hey, it wouldn’t be summer without it.

We narrowed down some of the most popular face paints on Amazon to our top 9 picks. Some kits are excellent if you’re on a budget and are only planning to use the kit once in a blue moon. Some others include high-quality paints you’d find the pros painting with at the festivals. In any case, every kit came highly reviewed by customers who praised the paint quality given the low prices. You won’t be finding expensive kits here — each paint set comes in under $25. And while most kits provide a couple of their own brushes, it’s never a bad idea to pick up a set of your own!

Face art. How to create an unusual makeup with

drawings

Share this article:

Makeup can be different. For everyday make-up, we use a standard set of cosmetics, with the help of which we mask skin imperfections, give the face a red tone and even texture, make the eyes more expressive, the lips more sensual. Highlighters and sticks architects allow you to model the shape of the face, hide excess volumes, visually narrow the forehead, and raise the cheekbones. But when it comes to event, thematic, fantasy make-up, completely different beauty products are used.A regular eyeshadow palette with a translucent texture will not cope with creative art tasks.

What is face art, what it is used for, what types of makeup exist, what to include in a professional makeup artist’s cosmetic bag. Everything in order.

Contents of the article:

What is face art

Drawing can be not only on canvas. The face is an excellent basis for art make-up, which can be performed in various styles, depending on the theme of the project, the situation for which it is being created.Graceful patterns, animalistic fragments, ethnic motifs, floristic compositions, contrasting geometry, horror, changing facial features, fabulous images. A professional make-up artist creates makeup clearly for a specific concept.

If for a classic make-up, with which women start their day, a simple set of foundation is enough. powder, blush, mascara and lipstick, then face art requires a serious arsenal of tools and beauty tools. Ordinary makeup has a light texture that gives the make-up a natural look. The task of face art is the opposite.

To create thematic, fantasy, stage images, dense makeup, acrylic paints, multi-colored glitters, additional decorative elements: rhinestones, sparkles, broths, feathers, false eyelashes, shimmering sand are used. For fixing, special adhesives and fine tweezers are required. The process is complex and requires high skill.

Face Art History

Art make-up came to us from the past. Face art was an integral part of the life of primitive people.Even in the Stone Age, brave warriors and tribal leaders adorned their faces with drawings that spoke of a person’s status and merits. Natural materials were used as makeup: white clay, henna, charcoal, fruit and herbal pigments. By the way, the ornaments and plots depicted on the face were repeated on dishes and household items.

Face-art was of particular importance for the Indians, who applied ritual symbols, mystical signs to the face and body. These images were not just a disguise – the drawings scared away or, on the contrary, summoned spirits, were used for rituals.

In the 17th-18th centuries, face art helped young ladies and gentlemen to create bright and unusual images for thematic balls, carnivals, and theater festivals. Traditions are still alive today – Venetian holidays convey the atmosphere that reigned on the streets of the city hundreds of years ago.

Today, art make-up is used in various fields. An effective addition to a wedding make-up, images for theme parties, fashion visage, stage direction, children’s face art. Each type has its own characteristics and nuances.Let’s get to know each of them in more detail.

Modern trends in face art

Let’s single out 5 varieties of art make-up that allow you to create unique images. Each of the directions has its own beauty subtleties and techniques for applying cosmetics.

Wedding face art

The makeup of the modern bride is not limited to the nude palette, pink lips and shimmering highlighter on the cheekbones. For the most daring girls who want to make their image unusual, effective and expressive, make-up artists offer such makeup elements as patterned arrows, miniature floral designs on the temples or in fragments above the eyebrow.Compositions look neat, elegant, not striking and at the same time bring graceful accents.

Thematic art make-up

Here we are talking about visage for events: parties, celebrations with a given color scheme and images. Japanese, oriental, Indian hen parties, pin up and anime parties, pirate, space birthdays, conceptual corporate parties, carnivals and festivals. When you are faced with the task of trying on a specific image, professional make-up artists come to the rescue, who will turn you into a duchess, an Amazon, a geisha, an Egyptian queen, a tribal leader.Fantasy, makeup, beauty tools, and friends do not immediately recognize you.

Halloween makeup is a prime example of themed face art. Come up with an image for yourself and the makeup artist will skillfully bring the idea to life. Witches, vampires, ghosts, corpses of the bride, skulls, goblin and brownies, kikimors, leprechauns, Frankenstein, broken dolls, evil dolls – with the help of art make-up you yourself will believe in your rebirth.

Art make-up becomes an additional tool in attracting attention.

Often, visage goes in parallel with the coloristic and compositional mood of the new clothing line. If the couturier used fabrics with animalistic motives, the faces of the models can turn into lionesses, tigresses, leopards and panthers.

Makeup artists create no less bright and unusual images for photo sessions. It all depends on the idea of the photographer or producer in charge of the project. Flower fairies, sorceresses, avatars, pagan goddesses, snow queens – the theme can be the most unexpected and even absurd. The talent of the make-up artist, the creative vision of the photographer and the interestingly constructed composition of the frame will create high-quality creative shots.

Children’s face painting

Kids love transformations, especially when they themselves become the main characters. Children’s face art is a trend especially popular at street carnivals, theatrical festivals, celebrations in kindergarten and school.Makeup artists use paints that are safe for the skin of children, which are evenly applied, bright and dense and at the end of the holiday are easily washed off with water.

The most popular topics are cartoon characters, comics, fairy tales. For boys: Batman, Superman, Spiderman, Pirate, Fixies, Iron Man. Among the hits for girls are Catwoman, Barbie, Rapunzel, Forest Fairy, Thumbelina, Little Kitty. The images of animals, birds and insects are universal. Wings of butterflies, muzzles of kittens, dogs, tigers, zebras, giraffes, frogs, hippos, colorful bird feathers look bright and original on the face.

When working with children, it is important for a make-up artist to establish contact with a child. The face painting process takes 10-15 minutes. It is important that the child sits still and does not try to escape.

Stage Face Art

Theatrical make-up is used to create stage images. Actors get used to their roles thanks to skillfully applied art make-up. Old men and women, medieval knights, dukes and duchesses, men become women, and women become men, grown-up children, and children become adults.Stage face art is capable of miracles. Especially when make-up artists use 3D overlays, a volumetric application that allows you to make wounds, cuts, bruises, abrasions, burns, bullet wounds as realistic as possible.

Now about what kind of beauty materials and tools you can use to create bright, creative face art.

Means and methods of art make-up

In order for the face art to last for a long time, during the entire fashion show, photo session, celebration or themed party, make-up artists use special cosmetics and make-up that are not sold in mass markets.Textures, shades and the necessary tools are selected for a specific task. Let’s single out 8 methods that professionals use in their work:

  • Henna. This material is used for stock art make-up. Often, young ladies adorn their face and body with compositions in brown tones in the summer – it looks spectacular on tanned skin, the paint is waterproof, does not fade and does not blur in the contours within 2 weeks. The tradition came from India, where ladies of different classes made mehndi on all parts of the body: legs, arms, stomach, back, face, neck.Previously, the drawings were symbolic, today, in most cases, they are decorative.
  • Mix of gouache and glycerin. The advantages of paint are that it looks bright and rich, clearly keeps boundaries, has a rich palette of shades, is affordable and can be purchased at any stationery store. Among the minuses – it crumbles, cracks appear, crumbles. To avoid this, make-up artists resort to a simple trick: they add glycerin to the gouache. The mix becomes elastic, dense, evenly applied and holds firmly throughout the day.
  • Professional make-up. The material has a thick texture. It requires skill in application. Beginners are faced with problems such as paint rolling, fixation difficulties, uneven distribution over the skin, bumps and gaps. It should be borne in mind that the makeup is not suitable for children’s face art – the skin does not breathe under it, it can cause irritation and an allergic reaction.
  • Acrylic paints.Makeup artists love this stuff. It fits well, does not require additional mixing with other products, rich colors, rich palette, there are shades with effects of shimmer, mother of pearl, metallization, etc. Among the disadvantages – they can cause allergies (itching, skin rashes).
  • Markers and markers for tattooing. These tools are very easy to work with – just like ordinary felt-tip pens on paper. The main thing is not to go beyond the lines of the drawing, follow the sketch clearly. Such art make-up lasts up to three days, retaining the richness in color and clarity in the graphics. The downside is that it comes off fragmentarily, in spots.
  • Pencil for painting. Super-resistant stick is most often used for modeling the shape of eyebrows, permanent eye makeup. But make-up artists use it for art make-up. It lasts 3-4 days, you can draw thin lines, graceful patterns, carefully shade the elements of the composition, the palette of shades allows you to use both muted pastel colors and saturated bright colors. To make the drawing on the face last longer, make-up artists cover it with special fixing compounds.
  • Airbrush. Suitable for screen printing. For miniature compositions, pencil technique or markers for tattooing, thin brushes with acrylic paints are more suitable.
  • Face painting. It allows you to perform both simple drawings and complex ones – with a multi-palette, smooth transitions from one shade to another, smoky shading or vice versa with clear lines defining the boundaries of the patterns. The peculiarity of paints is their fragility, they last up to 3-4 hours, they are easily washed off with water.Ideal for kids’ face art. Absolutely harmless to health, hypoallergenic.

Art Makeup Tools

The basis of the process is the material that the makeup artist applies to the skin. But in many respects, the result depends on the tools used in the work. If your task is to create a patterned composition, sponges and stencils will not work. Graceful lines can only be drawn with brushes or ultra-thin tattoo pencils. So, let’s take a look at the makeup artist’s makeup bag.We complete a desktop for a face art session:

  • Disinfectants. Sprays, gels with antiseptic properties are needed for surface treatment before applying a pattern. They will improve the durability of the pattern and ensure safety.
  • Sponges and sponges. Used for applying a base for art make-up, filling stencils with acrylic paint, face painting. The shape can be different: round, triangular, oval.
  • Puffs. They are used at the final stage for matting the composition with a translucent powder.
  • Feathers, applicators, brushes of various calibers. Essential face art tools to create professional graphic designs.
  • Tweezers and scissors. With tweezers, the master captures the decoration elements: rhinestones, broths, false eyelashes. Scissors adjust the shape if necessary.
  • Covers, stands, containers for consumables – allow you to streamline the workflow, make it as convenient and comfortable as possible for the makeup artist.
  • Cotton pads and art makeup removers.

Face art is a direction that requires a creative approach, creative ideas, high skill and careful preparation. Feel free to bring your beauty ideas to life and do not forget to correctly complete your cosmetic bag. The result often depends on even the smallest detail.

What is fancy makeup?

Fantasy makeup is an art make-up that goes beyond everyday and even evening. This is not just a correction of facial features that allows you to create the best version of yourself, but a full-fledged reincarnation. Fantasy Makeup Styles

It is impossible to list all the styles of fantasy make-up – the list will never be complete, given that anyone has the opportunity to create their own variation of such a make-up and add it to the existing ones. However, you can still highlight the main directions of fantasy makeup.

This make-up will help to adopt the appearance of an animal – any of those that only exist.True, it is better to choose those who have pronounced, recognizable features – it will be easier to convey them on their face, “painting” with beauty products for makeup.

  • Regular cat eye makeup can turn into an animal-style art make-up if you allow yourself a little grotesque. Longer arrows, sharper contouring, and the addition of colored lenses, whiskers and nose are elements that will make you look like a feline.
  • Of course, you can create makeup for any other animal. Most likely, in this case, you cannot do without special cosmetics for make-up.

Makeup can be classified as “vegetable”, when stalks and shoots, leaves, buds and flowers that have opened in all their beauty are used as elements of face art.Turning their plexuses into patterns, girls get a spring-like delicate makeup for a charming and feminine look. But how to find a use for it and in what specific situation it will be appropriate, you still have to think carefully.

In abstract fantasy makeup, as a rule, there is no leading theme – everything is built on lines, figures and their outlines. You can add more graphics, or, for example, focus primarily on a color-filled shape. When creating such a make-up, it is best to be inspired, of course, by abstract art – it will tell you what ideas could be brought to life.

  • Thick, long-lasting foundation. Elements of face art – that is, drawings – will remain on the skin only if the tone holds well, does not roll, does not smear and does not “float”. Therefore, choose a proven foundation. Desirable – with a waterproof effect. Check out All Nighter from Urban Decay.

  • Colored shadows. It would be nice to have a set of professional makeup on a greasy basis, which is used in theaters and on the set in the cinema, – it will provide the most reliable result. But you can do without it if you have a good palette of eyeshadows, loose pigments or, on the contrary, multifunctional products with a creamy texture like Eye & Brow Maestro from Giorgio Armani.

  • Colored pencils. If your cosmetic bag is only black or brown for eyeliner, you will have to replenish your beauty arsenal and add pencils of brighter colors to it. For those who are not good at using brushes, it will be much easier to draw with pencils.
  • Decor. A fantasy make-up will turn out to be much more interesting if the drawings are supplemented with such decorative elements as sparkles, feathers, rhinestones.False eyelashes are also useful – if not whole strips, then at least bunches.
  • Means for fixing. You need either a fixative spray like L’Oréal Paris’s Infallible Fixing Mist, or a colorless HD powder that can also provide long-lasting makeup.

  • Brushes. If you have a good set of brushes for every day, this may well be enough. In fantasy makeup, for the most part, thin brushes are needed (like those with which the arrows are drawn) – they are used to draw small details and other elements of the drawings on the face.

Apply primer, then work a long-lasting foundation all over the skin.

Sculpt the cheekbones with the help of the sculptor. You don’t have to worry about shading as in regular makeup. The main thing is to achieve an expressive visual effect.

Draw in the eyebrows, adjusting their shape using color.

Make smoky eyes using a color combination that you would not dare to in an everyday make-up. Create unusual transitions between shades. Add arrows with a graceful curve and try to “extend” them so that they become part of the pattern at the temples, which either goes down to the cheekbones or rises above the eyebrows.Decorate the drawing with glitter or rhinestones. Get creative – the image can be anything.

Spray the finished make-up with fixing spray.

Carnival makeup – Chocolate face

In this master class, we will tell and clearly show you how to perform carnival make-up – chocolate face-art for a creative photo shoot or for a masquerade. By the way, we will use improvised means, namely: shadows, pencils for eyes and lips, rhinestones and false eyelashes, because not everyone in the house has a professional set of paints and brushes for face art.
First of all, we will carefully even out the tone of the face using foundation, so that all layers lay down evenly smoothly.

So, starting with chocolate carnival make-up – chocolate face-art, let’s start by drawing the main form – in our case it is a mask. We carry it out with a brown lip pencil: these lines, in the end, will not be visible, however, this serves as the main basis so that the shadows and drawings superimposed over it do not soak into the skin and withstand their brightness for many hours. We carry out the mask of any shape, but you can repeat the shape behind us.

chocolate face art photo 1

Next, we process the inside of the mask frame with liquid brown shadows – which we will paint over with pearlescent ones, but this is a little later.(This move is also done so that the pearlescent shadows are not absorbed into the skin, but, thanks to the liquid shadows, remain in their contrast for a long time). We will also treat the movable and lower eyelids with a brown lip liner.

chocolate face art photo 2

Now our task is to outline, on both sides, the mask with black liquid eyeliner for the eyes, and evenly paint over the inside of the mask itself with matte brown shadows. On the inside of the frame, we will then apply golden shadows from the mother-of-pearl palette, which were mentioned above.

chocolate face art photo 3

Our chocolate mask is almost done, Just a few more strokes left. On a white face, such a mask does not look impressive enough, but it’s another matter when our face is completely so “sweet” and “chocolate” shines. We will achieve this with the brown eyeshadows from the pearlescent palette, but remember that the tone of the face needs to be toned, not only evenly, but also not too dark.

chocolate face art photo 4

Now that our mask and face tone are ready, we need to make the mask brighter and more expressive.
To do this, with the help of a black neon eyeliner (you can use a regular black felt-tip pen, which will give the same effect), we will outline the black outlines of the frame, since they, after applying all sorts of shadows and processing, have lost their original brightness. At the place where we have a downward-fluffed corner drawn on the bridge of our nose – we glue a couple of rhinestones in order to refresh the whole creation.

Lips must be chocolate-colored , however, you do not always have a chocolate shine, and we, taking this into account, recommend, in this case, use a lip pencil (paint over not the borders, but the lips completely) and golden shadows ( apply them over the pencil application, which will keep them there for a long time).

The look will be completed with spectacular false eyelashes with extended hairs at the ends. Chocolate face art, and our chocolate lady is ready to seduce and enchant!

If you want to diversify your makeup skills, pay attention to face art. This specific direction will help create a unique look for a special occasion. Let’s figure out what face art is, what techniques are there, and when it is advisable to use it.

Face Art History

Face art is a kind of body painting, only on the face. This is not a new direction, face art has very ancient roots. It goes back centuries, because even in the Stone Age, people applied special drawings to the skin of the face to emphasize their status.

War paint of ancient warriors, drawings on the faces of shamans, patterns on the faces of rulers – all these are examples of face art.

We drew pictures on the face using natural pigments – fruit and vegetable juices, clay, plants, and of course charcoal.

Face art has been widely used as a make-up technique since the mid-60s of the last century. It is clear that this is not a make-up for every day, but it has its own areas of application.

What is face art used for

Drawings on the face will help you transform into anyone – from a predator to a fabulous creature. It is clear that at first they began to use face art in the theater – as a make-up for performances. However, the scope is not limited to this.

Where face art is applied:

  • Advertising. Remember all those brand slogans and trademark symbols on the faces of models during a fashion show? This has become one of the ways for the brand to declare itself, its sponsorship or participation in a major project. Daring, interesting, unforgettable – this is how you can characterize advertising on faces. The boom in advertising face art came in the 90s of the last century, when the next dawn and body art experienced with it.

Face and body art in make-up

  • Sports. Fans all over the world paint faces in their team’s colors – this is a classic example of face art.
  • Competitions and fashion shows. How else can you evaluate the skill of a makeup artist? Of course, with the help of face art. Now this discipline is taught in the courses of makeup artists, and final exams in such educational institutions are turning into a real show.Face art is widely used at fashion shows and thematic events. Drawings on the face make the appearance of models on the catwalk even more spectacular.
  • Military targets. The camouflage on the faces of the military, imitating the colors of the terrain, is another example of face art.
  • Theme parties. It is with the help of face art that people turn into zombies at Halloween parties.
  • Children’s activities. The faces of animals on the faces of children are another manifestation of face art.

In general, the scope is unlimited.Face art can be used wherever it is appropriate.

Views and directions

There are the following types of face art.

  • Makeup. Essentially, it is a dense makeup that accentuates and / or changes facial features according to the role. It is used in theater and cinema.
  • Wedding. Do you want an unforgettable wedding makeup? Pay attention to the face art. This direction involves the creation of complex, but not bright, patterns on the face, immersion in the style of the wedding.
  • Artistic. This is a separate area, part of body painting. In this case, the face acts as a kind of canvas on which a real picture is created.
  • Children. Aqua make-up is one of the face art trends that is loved by children all over the world.

  • Themed. Any “transformation” into animals, evil spirits, fantasy creatures with the help of makeup is face art.
  • Target. Face art that has a specific purpose, be it a photo shoot, a video for a blog, a social action, etc.d.
  • Religious. For obvious reasons, it is now practically not used, but it used to be widespread among the pagans. Echoes of religious face art can still be found among some ethnic groups.

In fact, any deviation from the classic make-up can be called face art. And if you have ever drawn curly arrows, painted your face with shadows and bright eyeliners, congratulations, you are already quite familiar with face art.

Face Art Tools

Various devices are used to paint the face.

  • Wedding face art is made with permanent cosmetics and special paints. Rhinestones, beads, glitter, feathers are widely used in this technique. It is unstable, designed for one day, so it does not require special acrylic or other paints that can stay on the face for several days.

  • Make-up is used in theaters. This is a specific very dense cosmetic paint, with which you can visually add years, correct facial expressions, and change facial features.
  • Paints are used in body painting, including acrylic paints. To create complex patterns on the body and face, artists use airbrushes – special devices for spraying paint.
  • To create thematic face art, special paints are used for painting the body. They last for a long time, do not cause allergies and allow you to create complex patterns with a multi-level color transition.
  • Aqua make-up – special paints for painting on the face, widely used at children’s events. With the help of aqua makeup, animals and cartoons are painted on children’s faces, since the paints are safe, easily washed off and do not cause skin irritation.
  • Henna – used in religious face art and mehendi. Lasts for several weeks.

The most affordable tool is a set of cosmetic pencils, markers, eyeliners of different colors. Add a variety of shadows here and you get a starter kit for home face art.

DIY face art

With the help of ordinary cosmetics, you can create simple but memorable drawings on the face, for example, various patterns around the eyes and lips, curly arrows, ornaments on the forehead and much more.

Photo by the author of Dazzle Jam: Pexels

True, for such experiments, persistent and dense cosmetics with good pigmentation are needed. You can master the basic techniques of face art on your own. Here video tutorials on YouTube, free master classes and good imagination will come to the rescue.

Here’s a universal cheat sheet on how to create a vivid image without drawing skills:

  • Prepare the skin: apply foundation, concealer, highlight the cheekbones as much as possible.
  • Apply makeup glitter liberally instead of highlighter.
  • Apply bright eyeshadow with shimmer. Draw large arrows with neon eyeliner, stretching out the corner of the eye from the heart.
  • The entire space from the corner of the eye to the temple is pasted over with rhinestones, feathers or imitation scales – it all depends on what image you want to get. Experiment with the shape however you want.
  • Nasal stage eyelashes – lush feather, curly or with rhinestones. In general, such that you would not use in everyday life. Long green eyelash feathers are a great option.

At the end, highlight the lips and fix the makeup. This is how you can create an unforgettable look with cosmetics. True, rhinestones or scales will have to be looked for in specialized stores, but buying them will not be difficult.
