Water Pipes: How Does a Water Bong Work?

Whether you’re new to smoking or a seasoned vet, there are plenty of devices that you can use to enjoy a nice, smooth
drag off of your tobacco. One of those ways is by using a high-quality water pipe made from strong, durable glass.
Water pipes (which are often referred to as water bongs) are containers that are designed with a neck (or tube),
bowl to hold tobacco and a base which holds water. This water at the bottom of your pipe allows you to produce
great, clean hits of smoke when properly used, which makes it one of the most popular smoking devices on the market.
You can even add ice to
some stemmed water pipes to further reduce the harshness of your smoke.

Glass water pipes are awesome, but as a newbie, they may be very complicated to understand at first. If you’re
feeling overwhelmed when shopping for a water bong online, don’t fret — we have a thorough glossary which can help you
sift through the jargon and be a connoisseur of water pipes in no time.

How to Set Up and Use a Water Pipe

If you’ve thought about purchasing your first water bong for sale, the good news is that all pipes from Thick Ass
Glass are ready to use right out of the box. However, water pipes have removable pieces and still require careful
attention-to-detail when being used. So, how do you start? Let’s walk you through the process step-by-step:

1. Add Water to the Bong

You may be wondering just how much water to put in a bong. It’s surprisingly simple! All you need to do is add enough
water to produce bubbles without causing any messes from overflowing.

2. Pack the Bowl With Your Product

Do you see that open area at the top of your bong’s downstem? That’s the bowl, and it’ll be used to hold your
tobacco. It’s very important that your bowl stays firmly in your bong but can slide in and out easily to produce the
strongest hits.

3. Inhale and Relax

Once you have the right amount of water in the bong and a fully-packed bowl, it’s time to have some fun. Place your
lips on the mouthpiece located at the top of the neck, light the tobacco and start breathing in. Once you’ve reached
your lung capacity, pull the bowl out for an intense sensation of smoke and then breathe out slowly and chill.
Congrats, you’ve officially smoked out of a water pipe bong! One important thing to remember — if any of the water
that you added to your bong touches your lips, you’ve added way too much. It may take a couple of hits and emptying
or refilling the bong with water to get it just right, but that’s perfectly fine.

Water Bong Prices & How Much Does a Glass Water Bong Cost?

Water pipes come in a variety of shapes and sizes and, thus, have a wide range of price tags associated with them. We
at Thick Ass Glass strongly recommend that you purchase based on your
budget. After all, the last thing you want to do is purchase an expensive bong but have no money left over
for tobacco!

As history has shown, the smaller the size, the less expensive the product. For example, our TAG
6″ Bellow Globe Rig Sphere is available for under $30, making it an excellent choice for budget-conscious
buyers. But, if money isn’t a concern and you really want to ball out on a huge bong, we offer large water pipes
such as the 22″
Double Honeycomb to Fixed 29 Arm Tree bong.

What Are the Types of Water Bongs and Different Types of Water Pipes?

There are many types of water pipes available on the market to satisfy the unique needs of every person. Many smokers
love having all of these options to choose from, but those who are still new to using water pipes and bongs may feel
completely overwhelmed and confused when purchasing their first pipe. But that’s okay! Let’s look at the types and
shapes of water pipes you can
order:

Scientific Water Bongs

Remember those beakers that you used during scientific experiments in grade school? They can also be used to rip some
thick clouds after puffing on some tobacco! There are two types of scientific designs that you’ll find at Thick Ass
Glass: straight tube and beaker shapes. Straight tube water bongs are designed exactly how they sound — as a
straight tube with a level base. They’re extremely easy to use and produce efficient hits with every use due to
their simple design. Beaker water pipes, on the other hand, have a wider shape to hold plenty of water and air to
produce much more smoke than straight tube designs. Because they come in either a bubble or cone shape, beakers also
offer more stability as their lower center of gravity allows them to stay in one place.

Multi-Chamber and Round-Based Water Bongs

Multi-chamber water bongs are very similar to straight tube water pipes, except that the tube is split into two or
more chambers. These chambers all contain water which allow for a more thorough filtration process compared to other
types of water pipes. Unfortunately, while these bongs are very fun to use, they’re harder to clean and intended for
buyers with a higher budget.

Just how multi-chamber bongs are similar to straight tube designs, round-based water bongs are shaped like a sphere,
making them practically the same as a beaker. They offer the same level of stability and ease-of-use that you would
expect from beaker-shaped bongs.

Male vs. Female Water Bongs

Before you look at water pipes for sale, it’s important that you understand the difference between male and female
water bongs. They are very distinct from one another, and learning this will save you the headache
of accidentally ordering the wrong bong or accessory.

The first thing you should know is the type of joint and downstem that’s part of your water pipe bong. Male water
pipes require the bowl to be placed onto the joint, whereas the bowl is placed into the joint for female water
bongs. Depending on which bong gender you have, you will need to purchase accessories of the gender that is opposite
of your water pipe. For example, our 15″
Single Honeycomb to Spinning Guard water pipe will only be compatible with male accessories.

Bubblers and Glass Recyclers

A glass water bubbler pipe is, basically, a portable water bong that you can easily take on-the-go. There are many types of bubblers on the
market, including concentrate bubblers designed for oils and double bubblers with two chambers. But, ultimately,
what sets a water bubbler pipe apart from other types of water pipes is the fact that it’s small, easily
transportable and simple to use.

Glass recyclers offer benefits for individuals
looking to get cooler, less harsh draws out of their bong. Unlike typical water pipes, recyclers literally
recycle smoke through multiple chambers to properly filtrate, making each puff from your tobacco smooth and
enjoyable.

How to Clean Water Pipes

Learning how to clean water pipes is essential for keeping your piece working like the day you got it, and for
keeping you and your friends safe from spreading unwanted germs. Unfortunately, while water pipe cleaning is fairly
easy to do, some pipes are very intricate and may be more difficult to sanitize. But, all in all, the process for
cleaning is relatively the same and includes the following steps:

1. Have the Right Set of Tools Ready to Clean

First things first — make sure you have every cleaning product at your disposal before starting. Otherwise, you may
find yourself in the middle of cleaning and cursing after realizing that you’re missing a crucial item. You will
need the following products:

  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Water
  • Q-tips
  • Salt
  • Pipe cleaner

2.

Use the Salt and Rubbing Alcohol First

Once you have your cleaning items ready, slowly pour salt onto your water pipe’s bowl and stem. Then, proceed to add
the rubbing alcohol, seal the water pipe with the joint and mouthpiece and shake gently.

3. Rinse and Repeat

Now, you can rinse the water pipe with warm water to completely remove the alcohol and salt. If you have built up
residue, the Q-tips and pipe cleaners can be used to access and scrub areas that are difficult to reach. You may be
able to clean your water bong successfully on the first try, but if your bong is very dirty, you’ll need to repeat
these steps until it’s spotless.

What Are Some of TAG’s Favorite Water Pipes?

Our water pipes come in tons of shapes, sizes and colors, but one thing remains consistent across all styles: the
glass is always thick. Check out our top three models below!

A Straight Tube Water Pipe for “Cabin in the Woods”

A more recent horror film, “Cabin In The Woods” has become a cult classic and a favorite movie for many to pop in on

TAG – 8″ Multiplying Inline Sextuple Recycler – 14MM Female

Kicking off our coolest water pipe list is the Multiplying Inline Sextuple Recycler. At first glance, this piece is
completely insane! With crisses and crosses of tubes, this may not even look like a water pipe to the untrained eye.
With a plethora of recyclers, the hit gets smoother and smoother.

TAG – 8.25″ Faberge Egg Klein With Super Slit Puck

The design of this water pipe varies. However, it’s efficiency is the same across the board. The Faberge
Egg Klein water pipe is one of the coolest water pipes to come across your screen. Do you know what the
original “Faberge” is? It’s described as a jeweled egg that was created for royalty in Russia in the 1800s. And as
you can see, this water pipe is a jewel. Standing at just under 9 inches, it showcases dazzling percolators, and
it’s available in a variety of radiant colors.

TAG – 10″ Faberge Can Super Slit Donut With Bellow Base

It’s a little more subtle than the colorful Faberge water pipes, but this piece is just as artistic. Check out the
way the glass is formed in the middle and try to wrap your head around how it all connects. On top of its
wonderfully weird shape, this Faberge
water pipe also has a super slit donut perc, which creates a unique draw that sets this piece apart from the
rest. With a bent neck, bellow base (bell-shaped base) and quality glass — you can’t go wrong.

FAQ: What’s the Difference Between Water Pipes and Dry Pipes?

There are some pros and cons
associated with using water pipes instead of dry pipes, and vice versa. As the name suggests, water pipes utilize
h3O to keep your tobacco smoke nice and filtered, but can be more difficult to clean, more expensive and harder to
take small puffs off of compared to dry pipes. However, they’re extremely unique and allow you to take large rips of
tobacco per use. Dry pipes allow you to smoke your tobacco quickly and easily — simply load the bowl and you’re
ready to spark. They are smaller, easier to use and more portable, but they’re harsher on your lungs, especially if
you’re taking larger puffs.

FAQ: What’s the Difference Between Water Pipes and Dab Rigs?

When you hear the phrase “water pipes,” you’ll most likely also hear “dab rigs” in the same sentence. The main difference between water pipes
and dab rigs is that dab rigs are intended for concentrates or oils, whereas water pipes are the best water
bong for tobacco.

FAQ: What Kinds of Water Pipe Accessories Can You Buy?

There are many water pipe accessories available, including slides, ash catchers and percolators. But, before you
purchase, you must find the right
measurements for your water pipe accessories, as well as buy according to your water bong’s gender
(remember, male water pipes get female accessories and vice versa).

Recognize Types of Dry Pipes – Daily High Club

There’s more to dry pipes than just the typical bowl piece. While many see water pipes as the intricate items to understand and interpret, we forget how many different types of water-less hand pipes are out there, and how truly diverse these smoking supplies can be. Read through the following guide of Types of Dry Pipes to become an expert identifier and figure out the next addition to your smoking supply stash.

As the name suggests, these pipes are small enough for only one hit at a time. While all hand pipes are characteristically covert, these are popular as being top-notch in portability and discreteness – some even mimic a cigarette! One-hitters, or bats, are very easy to use, as they are typically just a skinny tube with a spot at one end for packing a single pull, with a mouthpiece at the other end. You really just light and pull like you would a standard cigarette or roll.

Some one-hitters even come with a dugout, or a portable box with 2 compartments: one for legal herbs or tobacco and one narrow compartment for the bat, providing easy loading on the go. One-hitters can be made of a variety of materials including glass, quartz, metal, acrylic or wood.

Chillum

Chillums are similar to one-hitters, except they feature a larger bowl and have more options for artistry and size.  They’re made up of a small straight tube with one end used for holding a personal-sized amount of tobacco and the other end used for inhaling, but they differ from one-hitters in that they can hold more than a single drag.

Chillums are also seen as great starter pipes for beginners, since you only have to concentrate on loading, lighting, and inhaling, and they’re perfect for one-person smoke sessions. Most varieties of chillums are manufactured out of glass or titanium, but they can be made out of wood.

PRO TIP: Due to their size, chillums are best lit at a 45-degree angle to prevent dry herb from falling to the floor.

Glass blunts are quickly growing in popularity, due to their simplicity and the control of being able to load just the right amount of tobacco or legal herbs for the smoker’s needs, whether that be smoking alone or in a group. Glass blunts are made to replace rolling papers or hemp wraps, and most are constructed with an outer tube and an inner tube, held in place by some type of rubber casing. Instead of needing to become a master roller, or running the risk of having to smoke a whole wrap on your own, a glass blunt lets you easily load and smoke as much as you want. The glass construction provides a smoother hit and a durability that standard papers just can’t match. After the pipe is loaded to your liking, light the end and inhale through the mouthpiece. If you go too long between hits, you may have to relight the product to produce smoke again, like a normal wrap.

Most glass blunts are alike in the way they function, but some operate a little differently. Some glass blunts have a slide mechanism or an extending mouthpiece you can remove to load your tobacco, and then reinsert and push forward as contents burn to eject the ash. Others have an interior twisted structure that you can rotate as you smoke in order to empty. And some are simply a glass blunt! Or a glass tube that you pack and smoke like a normal roll and then gently tap to ash. But all designs alleviate the usual anxiety of burning ends dropping where they may, in the messiest or inconvenient of ways.

Added bonus: glass blunts are intrinsically wind-resistant, healthier than standard papers, and eco-friendly thanks to their reusability!

Good ol’ spoon pipes are the most widely known, quintessential smoking device used by smokers worldwide. These traditional dry pipes feature a bowl for tobacco and a carburetor, with a mouthpiece at the other end. Some vaguely resemble a spoon shape, hence their name, but others have evolved with the times and come in various shapes and sizes. For those who don’t know, a carburetor, or carb, is the hole usually found on the side of the bowl end that allows additional air to be drawn in. When the hole is covered with a finger or thumb, incoming air is lured through the bowl and its contents, moving smoke into the pipe.

When the hole is then uncovered, air enters through the carb opening, allowing all of the smoke in the pipe to be rapidly inhaled. Smokers generally agree that glass pipes with carbs produce fresher smoke than those without them (like the one-hitters, chillums or glass blunts above). Spoon pipes are commonly constructed out of glass but can also be shaped out of silicone, wood, clay, ceramic, or even crystals!

The most sophisticated. Named after the famous Sherlock Holmes pipe, Sherlocks capture a somehow traditional yet unique aesthetic, exhibiting a large bowl for tobacco and an extended, arching stem that often curves down and back up for quite a comfortable smoking experience. Gandalf pipes fall under the Sherlock classification but are distinct in that the stem is highly elongated, much like the one everyone’s favorite smoke-ring-blowing wizard used in LOTR.

These dry pipes feature a novel curved mouthpiece that presents a longer path for smoke to travel, thus creating a smoother hit. The bottom of the bowl usually has a flattened base or stabilizing “feet” that allow the pipe to stand freely when not in use. However, Sherlocks (and Gandalfs) may or may not have a carb, so be sure to check before buying if that’s something you want. These pipes are normally made of glass or wood, and sometimes metal.

PRO TIP: Sherlock Pipes can be larger and a touch more delicate than standard hand pipes, so they may be best for smoking at home instead of on-the-go.

This is another pipe that may initially look like a chillum in design…but is definitely not. Steamrollers traditionally feature a cylindrical design, capped by a mouthpiece at one end while a bowl is usually indented into the top of the opposite end. Steamrollers are typically made of thick glass, while some are even built with a nail instead of a bowl, for smoking oil. The cool thing is both ends are open, and the bowl end doubles as a type of carb. So, you light the tobacco or legal herbs, then cover the open end near the bowl with your hand, which fills the pipe with smoke for you to swiftly inhale all at once after you re-expose the end.

Steamrollers have a notorious reputation for consistently delivering heavy smoke that hits harder than the average dry pipe, although some steamrollers do have chambers between the bowl and the mouthpiece that allegedly cause smoke to be “rolled” to increase cooling. Because of their supreme, low-resistance clearing capabilities, steamrollers are not recommended for newbies. However, for seasoned smokers who know their inhaling capabilities, steamrollers can bring quite the experience.

Specialty pipes refer to any type of hand pipe that doesn’t quite belong in any other category, like a themed or novelty pipe, or one made with a unique design or function or is maybe even a mix between two types. They are often uncommon pipes that offer the user something different. Specialty pipes are traditional enough that you can simply pack the material into the bowl chamber, ignite and go, and most specialty pipes even feature a carb, letting you clear your smoke and alter your airflow.

Specialty pipes can come in an extremely wide array of shapes, styles, and colors, and can be made with glass, wood, silicone, metal or acrylic. But all variations offer something unique that will make for a stand-out piece in your smoking supplies collection!

What Is a Glass Bubbler a.

k.a Bubbler Pipe?[Fully Explained]

A bubbler is a single-piece water-pipe style device, typically made from glass. When you use one of these pipes, you benefit from a smoother hit. There is a lot more to marijuana than merely lighting a joint. Along with the thousands of strains available, various devices and accessories allow you to experience cannabis differently.

Rolling joints and blunts are the traditional methods of using weed. Bong hits also belong to the old-school, but there are new kids in town. Dabbing marijuana concentrates is one way to get very high. However, if you don’t want to mess around with nails and torches, a glass bubbler is an adequate substitute.

What Is a Glass Bubbler?

A bubbler is a cross of a water pipe and a bong. It features a bowl, stem, mouthpiece, and a water chamber, much like a bong. You can also purchase bubblers with a percolator. This is an extra water chamber that helps filter and cool the smoke.

While a bubbler and bong have similar features, the former resembles a one-piece water pipe.

Humankind has used the bong for millennia, and it comes from the Thai word baung. These first pipes were made from bamboo, and evidence of bong use stretches back to 400 BC, at least. Likewise, the humble pipe has been around for eons.

It isn’t easy to pinpoint the precise origin of the bubbler. However, the inventor likely wanted a portable version of a bong. Once glass blowing techniques were perfected in the mid-20th century, it didn’t take long for us to see the first glass bubbler.

Using a Glass Bubbler

If you are a novice, you might find the process of filling your bubbler with water tricky. The easiest way is to fill it through the bowl. We don’t recommend filling it through the narrow mouthpiece because it is hard to get the water in. Also, the shape of the mouthpiece provides a deceptive view of how much water is really in the bubbler.

There is an art to determining how much water can go into a bubbler. If there isn’t enough, it won’t filter the smoke and result in harsh lung hits. If it is too much, you can get stale hits, or else backsplash can become an issue. Ideally, you will fill the bubbler until half the stem is submerged.

Once you have filled the bubbler to the right level, follow these steps:

  • Pack the Bowl: Do this on a flat surface or else your marijuana could get wet. Pack the bowl somewhat loosely, or else you will restrict airflow. If this happens, you could find it hard to smoke. However, packing it TOO loosely results in burning your flower too quickly.
  • Light the Cannabis: Light the flower and inhale. Make sure you keep your finger on the bubbler’s rush hole to properly light the bowl and get smoke. It is recommended that you light the corners first.
  • Enjoy the Hit: Once you are satisfied, remove your finger from the hole and inhale.
  • Clear the Bowl: Make sure you clean the cannabis and also dump the water. Leaving water in the bubbler will result in a build-up of bacteria and mold, not to mention an awful smell. Ideally, you will clean the bowl pack after every use and rinse the bubbler.

Pros & Cons of Using a Bubbler

Pros

  • A glass bubbler is the ‘middle ground’ between a bong and a pipe.
  • As these devices are often one-piece models, they are easy to transport. Ideal if you like getting stoned while you travel.
  • A bubbler can act as a portable bong. It helps you enjoy refreshing, filtered smoke offered by a water chamber and a percolator. Pipes are also portable but don’t provide the same quality of smoke.
  • There are numerous bubbler pipe options, most of which are beautifully designed.
  • A bubbler is useful if you have difficulties using a bong.

Cons

  • One piece means portability and ensures that bubblers are extremely difficult to clean because you can’t take them apart.
  • As they are glass, they will break if you drop them.
  • While bong users can add new accessories, bubblers are not as customizable.
  • Bubblers have small bowls that burn faster than bongs on average. As a result, a bubbler is very much a solo device, whereas a bong is better for groups.

Types of Glass Bubblers

There is no shortage of variety when it comes to glass bubblers, although they all have the following in common:

  1. Each one has a bowl that varies in size according to the bubbler you purchase.
  2. Every bubbler has a water chamber, but once again, the size varies.
  3. All bubblers have a stem with an opening at the end. In this device, a stem is where the marijuana smoke travels through once filtered by the water.

Therefore, when looking at the wild and wonderful glass bubbler designs, remember that their goal is the same. They use water to filter the smoke and allow for smoother hits. Experienced smokers understand the difference between harsh hits and cool & smooth ones. Here are a few common types of glass bubblers:

  • Double Bubbler: This device has two chambers rather than one, which means the smoke gets filtered twice. The result is a smooth, clean, and refreshing hit every time.
  • Concentrate: This bubbler is for marijuana concentrates and essential oils.
  • Sidecar: This bubbler has a mouthpiece and stem attached to the side of the water chamber, which helps minimize the risk of splashback.
  • Sherlock: One look at this bubbler gives you a good idea of what to expect. It gets its name because it looks like the pipe used by Arthur Conan Doyle’s fictional detective.
  • Pendant: This bubbler option is usually small and has a tiny hole or ring. The design allows you to wear it around your neck like a pendant.
  • Hammer: This bubbler looks like a hammer but don’t use it like one!

Things to Consider When Choosing a Glass Bubbler

There is an impressive array of glass bubblers on the market. However, you can narrow down your search by focusing on the following:

  • A Solid Base: Ideally, your bubbler will stand up on its own. The design could feature a special base, or else it stands up because the base and mouthpiece are close enough together. When your bubbler can stay standing without assistance, it is easier to store. It is also less likely to leak water when you don’t use it.
  • Glass Thickness: Look for 3mm thick glass as a bare minimum.
  • Overall Size: In general, glass bubblers are 5-10 inches long and 2-5 inches tall. The difference in weight, portability, and storage is significant when comparing the smallest and largest in this range. Consider whether you want a bubbler that fits in your hand so you can use it when you travel. Alternatively, you may only want one for home use. As a result, you can buy a larger one.

Final Thoughts on Glass Bubblers

When purchasing a glass bubbler, make sure you invest in one made from high-quality glass. Borosilicate glass is a popular material for the water pipe. Bubbler manufacturers use it because it is heat-tolerant, heavy, and extremely tough.

Occasionally, you may see a bubbler made from ‘scientific’ or ‘lab quality’ glass. This is usually a roundabout way of saying it is made from borosilicate glass.

Pretty much everything else boils down to preference. You may want a plainly-designed bubbler or one that looks as if Tommy Chong designed it while incredibly stoned. You can have deep or shallow bowls, long or short stems, or big/small water chambers.

As long as high-quality glass is involved, it should do the trick and last you for a long time in the bargain.

Best of all, you can easily find glass bubblers online for as little as $20. If you want something from the top-end of the market, expect to pay up to $200. While it seems like a lot of money, it is probably the equivalent of under an ounce of weed. Remember, your glass bubbler can give you years of high-quality smoking sessions. Therefore, it is worth investing in something substantial.

Incidentally, there are also wooden bubbler pipes on the market. Some people prefer wood because it is less fragile than glass. However, it is essential to note that the vapor produced by wooden bubblers is not as clean as what comes from a glass version. If you don’t care about this issue, look for a bubbler made from a hardwood such as rosewood or maple.

However, our MOB Biohazard Water Pipe features a triple arm recycler outfitted with CFL design (color changing glass), which makes for an extreme difference compared to ordinary straight tubes. Needless to say, the versatility of water pipes is exactly why they remain so popular in this day and age, and it’s considered to be one of the safest smoking methods!

How to Use a Water Pipe

At first glance, it may seem challenging to use a water pipe. There is a technique behind using water pipes, but after a few seshes you’ll be a professional! A water pipe’s anatomy consists of a base, inner chamber, neck, downstem, slide, and mouthpiece. Not too intimidating, right?

The first thing you’re going to do when using a water pipe is to begin packing your slide with your favorite dry herb. If you’re looking for top-tier herb, our CBD Hemp Flower selection is out of this world! To make the most out of your hits, start by packing your herb lightly at the bottom of the slide and add density as you make your way toward the top of the slide. This will prevent clogging and ash taste as you burn through your herb!

As you light your herb, put your mouth into the mouthpiece and begin to suck. As you suck, you’ll notice smoke beginning to fill the chamber of your water pipe. You should also see bubbles forming! This gives you a clear indication that you’re using your water pipe right. When you have enough smoke in your water pipe, get ready to inhale!

Remove the downstem, or slide if the downstem is fixed, and inhale. Keep inhaling until all the smoke has cleared the chamber, or until you feel like your lungs have had enough. We don’t judge! This is where you’ll feel the smoothness of your smoke coming into play. This is all due to your water pipe filtrating and diffusing your smoke to make it easier to inhale and consume!

The final step: exhale! As you exhale, you may begin to cough. That’s 100% okay! A good rule of thumb is to keep water nearby. That way you can remain comfortable and cough-free (well as much as possible) during a sesh!

What’s the Best Water Pipe to Buy?

Cloud 9 Smoke Co has a vast array of water pipe styles, designs, and functionalities, so this is completely up to your lifestyle and preferences! Whether you’re looking for a glass water pipe, silicone water pipe, percolator water pipe, straight tube water pipe, beaker water pipe, or a mini water pipe, we have the best options ready for you.

Straight tube water pipes: These are commonly known as straight-shooters due to their direct nature. The narrow design of a straight tube’s chamber gives you direct hits sent straight to the dome! Plus, they’re easy to care for and maintain.
Beaker water pipes: These are the iconic, traditional style of water pipes. Their wide, flask-shaped base allows for your smoke to come into more contact with water for filtration and diffusion.

Recycler water pipes: This type of water pipe is also known as a multi-chamber water pipe. Recycler water pipes allow your smoke to go through the filtration process more than once and will create smooth, concentrated hits.

Silicone water pipes: These water pipes are perfect if you’re looking for a water pipe that’s virtually indestructible. Silicone water pipes are made from food-grade silicone that’s non-toxic and BPA free. They’re usually more lightweight than glass water pipes, and can be easily stashed for on-the-go lifestyles.
Mini water pipes: These water pipes typically range in height from 5” to 7” tall. Mini water pipes are also great for portability and can be discreetly stashed if you have roomies that aren’t familiar, or fond of, your hobbies.
Heady water pipes: Heady water pipes are unique to one another and are made from highly-skilled glass blowers! With heady pieces, you’ll usually find that they’re more artistic in nature and take on nontraditional shapes and designs. Once you buy a heady piece, you’ll be rest-assured that nobody else will have a water pipe like yours. Every heady is one-of-a-kind.

Materials

Borosilicate glass: Borosilicate glass is the golden material for glass water pipes due to its nature of being able to withstand high temperature changes and conditions while remaining strong and sturdy! As you’re smoking from a water pipe made from borosilicate glass, you’ll be able to witness all the magic that’s happening inside. Glass water pipes are perfect for visibility, so you know when to rip the final inhale or when it’s time to clean.

Silicone: Food-grade silicone is the top choice for making silicone water pipes. Food-grade silicone is non-toxic, BPA free and 100% washable, which means that these water pipes are safe to smoke from and easy to clean. Their durable and flexible bodies make for the perfect water pipe to stash and bring with you on-the-go!

Accessories and Features

Slides: Water pipe slides come in a variety of sizes, joint styles, and shapes. Slide sizes typically come in 10mm, 14mm, and 18mm, which will complement the joint size of your water pipe and downstem. Slides also have the ability to be female or male jointed. A good way to remember the joint styles is to see how the slide fits into your water pipe’s joint piece. If the slide fits into the joint, it’s a male slide. If the slide fits on top of the joint, it’s a female slide. Slide shapes can range anywhere from the OG martini-style slide, to bubble-shaped slides, all the way to unique slides that have features such as handles or built-in screens.
Downstems: Fixed downstems will make a water pipe easy to transport and handle. However, it is common for a water pipe to have a removable downstem. Typically, removable downstems are diffused downstems, which gives mild percolation to your water pipe. The outer stem of a water pipe is used to hold your slide if the downstem is fixed.

Ice pinches: This feature is also known as ice catchers. Ice pinches are the little indentations located at the base of the neck. This allows for your water pipe to hold ice so your smoke can be refreshing and thick!

Percolators: There are a wide range of percolators you can choose from, but they all work to increase the rate and exposure your smoke has with air and water. Percolators diffuse the harmful byproducts that come from combusted dry herb! Popular percolator styles include honeycomb percolators, tree percolators, showerhead percolators, inline percolators, matrix percolators, and faberge egg percolators. You can also find water pipes with more than one percolator!

Ash catchers: This accessory works to trap fallen ash and dry herb before it enters your water pipe. Having an ash catcher is a huge help for your smoking experience, because the ash catcher prevents ash from clogging your percolators and will keep your water clean.
Cleaning supplies: Having the right cleaning supplies will keep your water pipe in tip-top shape! Before you reach for the rubbing alcohol and salt, let it be known that there are special cleaning supplies made to sterilize and clean water pipes without being as abrasive as rubbing alcohol and salt. Cloud 9 Smoke Co’s favorite cleaning supplies for water pipes are Resinate Green and Glob Mops.

Joint Sizes and Degrees for Water Pipes

Just like our bodies, water pipes contain joint pieces that connect the slide to the downstem. By keeping the size of your joint in mind, you can choose the right slides and ash catchers to snugly fit inside your water pipe. The standard water pipe joint sizes are: 10mm, 14mm, and 18mm. Joint degrees are the angles that the joints and downstems are placed into the water pipe. Knowing your joint degree is helpful to pick out the right accessories and attachments for your water pipe! The standard water pipe joint degrees are 45 degrees and 90 degrees.

Why Should I Use a Water Pipe?

Water pipes are considered to be one of the healthiest ways to consume dry herb. This is due to their ability to filter, diffuse, and cool your smoke. Joints, blunts, and hand pipes don’t have this ability! Exposing your smoke to water and air helps to reduce the amount of tar, ash, and harmful byproducts you’re exposed to. This will protect your body from damage, prevent lung irritation, and create a comfortable smoking experience.

After you’ve finished a sesh with a water pipe, you may see that the water inside has changed color with ash and resin floating around. This is what water pipes are protecting us from! Sure, it’s not 100% effective, but water pipes are able to protect us from elements hand pipes and wraps aren’t able to. The water and ice-pinch features in water pipes allows our smoke to cool to a comfortable temperature, so our lungs and throats remain in tip-top shape.

What Is A Glass Water Bong?

A glass water bong, or water pipe, is a pipe that uses water to filter and cool the smoke that passes through it. This feature provides a cooler and smoother hit for smokers to inhale through the straight tube of the glass water bong.

How Do Glass Water Pipes Work?

A glass water pipe works by filtering smoke through water as you inhale through the mouthpiece.

The parts of a glass water pipe include:

  • Glass bowl: small, removable glass basin that holds marijuana in place
  • Downstem: glass tube that holds the bowl in place, and filters smoke into water
  • Base: hollowed bottom of the glass water pipe that holds the water (usually round or beaker shaped)
  • Chamber: straight tube for smoke to travel through that connects the base to the mouthpiece
  • Carb: a small hole that allows smokers to control airflow by covering or uncovering it

Here’s how to smoke with a glass bong:

  1. Grind your medical marijuana
  2. Fill glass bong with enough water to submerge half of the downstem
  3. Pack the glass bowl with ground weed
  4. Use a lighter or hemp wick to spark up the bowl
  5. Inhale as you hold the flame over the bowl until it’s lit
  6. Turn off the flame and continue inhaling until the chamber fills with smoke
  7. To take the hit, remove the glass bowl or uncover the carb hole, and inhale

Some models of big glass bongs feature a more complex filtration system, made of several layers of percolators and diffusers. Common modifications, like gas-dispersion frits, or diffusers, break up the smoke into extra fine bubbles and work together with percolators to increase the contact area of water. The more contact area with water, the smoother and cooler the smoke gets.

Other popular features of thick bongs include:

  • Ice catchers: coned shaped indents within the chamber for holding ice cubes in place
  • Bent necks: curved chamber tubes that tilt the mouthpiece at an angle
  • Showerhead percs: a modified version of circ percs, with an extra opening in the middle for increased water contact
  • Circ percs: rounded, hollow donut-shaped percolator with slits/holes along the sides and bottom
  • Honeycomb perc: flat, circular percolators containing several small holes and resemblance a honeycomb
  • Tree perc: a cylindrical percolator with multiple “arms”/diffused tubes around the sides for increased diffusion
  • Diffused downstem perc: classic straight tubed downstem with angled slits at the bottom
  • Inline perc: built-in slits holes featured in straight tube glass bongs

What Are Thick Bongs Made Of?

Borosilicate glass, silicone, acrylic, and ceramic stand as the most common materials used to make water pipes. Glassblowers make the majority of bongs with borosilicate glass and use a high temp blow torch to soften and shape the glass. Most bongs start similar to pipes, as thick bubbles which glassblowers hollow out and mold into glass water pipes for sale.

The History of Hand Blown Glass Bongs

Water pipes have served as a cannabis community favorite for over 2400 years — that’s almost 2.5 millenniums ago. According to records, a 2013 excavation of a kurgan (a mound of earth and stones raised over a grave) in Russia revealed that ancient Scythian tribal chiefs used golden bongs to smoke opium and cannabis.

Beyond that, it was the Chinese during the Ming Dynasty (around the 16th century) who introduced the use of water pipes for smoking. But it wasn’t until the Qing Dynasty that using water pipes became the most popular way to smoke tobacco. At that time, the majority of pipes comprised either homemade bamboo bongs, or luxury metal bongs, which were used by nobility and merchants.

From that point on, the glass bong experienced several innovations, until it became what we know it as today.

What Types Of Glass Bongs For Sale Are Available?

Glass pipes and bongs come in a wide variety of shapes, colors, and styles. And choosing the best bongs comes down to knowing what kind of smoking experience you want.

Different Types Of Bongs By Material

Glass Bongs

A plain glass bong stands as one of the most popular styles of water pipes, offering a hybrid blend of functionality and aesthetics. Most glass hand blown bongs include a diffused downstem, built-in ice catcher, and upgradeable glass bowl, with some models featuring built-in percolators.

Thick glass bongs offer the cannabis community a smooth and convenient smoking experience, with an attractive and sturdy build, at an affordable price point.

Silicone Bongs

A silicone bong offers all the core functionality of the best glass bongs but adds extreme durability and portability to the mix. These flexible bongs feature a shock-proof, food-grade silicone frame that’s dishwasher safe, foldable, and lightweight. Feature-wise, most silicone bongs are small in size and include a standard downstem with either metal bowls (not recommended) or silicone wrapped glass bowls (recommend).

Silicone bongs work great for stoners who want all the basic features of a water pipe, but want a piece that’s easy to transport and won’t break when it falls.

Ceramic Bongs

Before glass blown bongs became the standard, ceramic bongs reigned as king. These bongs function and feel similar to glass bongs, but offer superior temperature change resistance, which makes tokes a little bit cooler. Ceramic bongs include all the standard features of water pipes, like a downstem and removable bowl, but lack the ability to accessorize with percolators, ash catchers, and diffused downstems.

At a similar price point to most glass water bongs for sale, ceramic bongs stand as a great choice for smokers who prefer a more artsy and vintage aesthetic paired with a classic bong smoking experience.

Metal Bongs

As mentioned earlier, metal bongs are some of the oldest types of bongs and were used by Scythian tribes over 2,400 years. And these days, they’ve mostly been replaced by smoother and more innovative styles, like glass bongs.

Metal bongs work similar to standard water pipes but lack upgradeability and filtration in favor of durability. So while a metal bong won’t break when it falls over, it’ll also never hit as smoothly as your glass bong. This is why you’re better off grabbing a silicone bong.

Acrylic Bong/Plastic Bong

An acrylic bong is the cheap, clear, hard plastic bong that nearly every young stoner buys at the beginning of their cannabis career. These water pipes stand as the predecessors to silicone pipes, but with less flexibility and quality control when it comes to materials.

While they work and function like standard water pipes, the tokes they produce just aren’t as smooth as glass water pipe or silicone bongs. Plus, they’re not built to last, and quickly degrade and crack through regular use.

Acrylic bongs are the most basic types of water pipes and work best for smokers who aren’t ready to upgrade to a smoother and higher-quality glass bong.

Other types of bongs include:

  • Bamboo
  • Fruit
  • Wood
  • Plastic

If you’re curious to learn about the different types of bong designs, keep reading — we cover that in the next section.

Is It Better To Smoke Cannabis From A Glass Water Bong?

Here’s the question nearly every stoner has asked at one point or another:

Is smoking with glass bongs better for your lungs?

Well, yes…and no. Let’s break it down.

Smoking with blown glass bongs helps to reduce the dry heat experienced from smoking joints or bowls, which provides a gentler, cooler, and smoother smoking experience. At the same time, the diffusion of the smoke through water helps create “cleaner” tokes by filtering out some of the burnt plant matter, ash, and tar that would normally go straight to your lungs.

However, neither of those features of glass bongs stop the smoke itself from filling up your lungs. In fact, when smoking a bong, you may inhale WAY more smoke since it’ll feel cooler and smoother. Because of this, you often end up exposing your lungs to more C02 than if you had smoked a joint or bong bowl.

At the same time, it may surprise you to know that wholesale glass bongs actually filter out some of the psychoactive components in marijuana smoke — specifically, THC. Since THC is not water-soluble and can’t bond with water molecules, smoking weed through a bong removes a small amount of it from the smoke you inhale. That said, the amount of THC removed is fairly small, and often unnoticeable — in most cases, only veteran smokers can feel the difference.

Beyond this, there’s no hard science yet that proves smoking with even the best glass bongs is any “safer”. But if you want cleaner and smoother tokes when you smoke, unique glass bongs have you covered. You can find plenty of glass water pipes for sale and hand blown glass bongs here at Marijuana Packaging.

Frequently Asked Questions About Glass Bongs
How To Clean A Glass Bong

The best method of cleaning a glass bong requires some type of cleaning solution. There are many bong cleaners for sale. If you don’t have access to one, you may use a mix of salt (one teaspoon), Isopropyl alcohol (4 oz), and warm water (4 oz). Empty your bong of the dirty water and replace that with the cleaning solution. Cover the mouthpiece and the bowl insertion hole. Now shake the bong with the cleaning solution inside well for about 30 seconds. Make sure to turn the bong upside down, and all around while you shake it. Now pour the solution out, rinse, and repeat if necessary! You may use a cotton swab or pipe cleaning tool to reach those hard to get areas.

Are Glass Bongs Better Than Blunts?

It all depends on your personal preference. Those who do not enjoy the taste or smell of tobacco products can opt for glass bongs, which are a healthier way to smoke. However, some consumers enjoy the aesthetic and feeling of smoking blunts.

Can I Buy A New Downstem For My Glass Bong?

Yes, every piece of your bong that is removable can also be replaced. The bowl and downstem are two of the most commonly replaced pieces of a glass bong.

Can I Smoke Dabs Out A Glass Bong?

Are Glass Bongs Recyclable?

You may recycle your glass bongs in the same manner you dispose of any other glass items in your home.

The 11 Most Expensive Cannabis Pipes and Bongs

Marijuana paraphernalia is definitely an interesting part of the cannabis club culture. Some smokers even value their paraphernalia even more than smoking itself. While owning some sort of paraphernalia can be illegal in some spots, some smokers have dished out some seriously impressive cash for a wide range of crazy and luxurious pipes and bongs.

As a smoker, sometimes it gets a bit tiresome of smoking joints and you need a new little spice to your weed intake. “Some people collect crazy bongs and pipes that help to give an even higher high…and others just like to collect cool artifacts that are associated with weed,” says Anne Lisa, founder of Online Dispensary Canada and a passionate cannabis paraphernalia fan as well. Without further adieu, here is a list of some expensive and out-of-this-world types of pipes and bongs.

LECTURE ON INSTRUMENTATION
WALTORN

( it. – corno; fr. – cor10 – ; ger. – cor10 – German. – french horn)
Part I

Despite the abundance of books, textbooks, dictionaries and reference books devoted to the instrumental culture of the Baroque and Classicism, the history of brass instruments contains a lot of incomplete and insufficiently accurate information. However, relying on historical evidence and studying the interpretation of copper instruments in the artistic practice of that time, one can judge with a high degree of certainty about their structure and performing technique. ( Unfortunately, we will probably never know how copper sounded three centuries ago. )

So: in the 18th century, the so-called natural French horns were used (like trumpets). ( The trombone has a fundamentally different structure, and this term does not apply to it.)

These were bent copper (or from special alloys) tubes, ending with a bell and equipped with a mouthpiece (see Fig. 1). Other devices – holes, valves, valves, etc. etc., these instruments did not have. Only the lips of the performer, resting on the mouthpiece, were the source of the sound and controlled the entire performing technique.

Fig. 1

Strictly speaking, this is not quite a French horn yet. In the scores of J.S.Bach, such an instrument is called corno da caccia – a hunting horn or tromba da caccia , sometimes referred to by researchers as a baroque trumpet.Either we are talking about the same instrument, or this indirectly indicates the possible interchangeability of trumpets and horns in the first half of the 18th century.

The sounds produced on old French horns (trumpets) were limited to the overtone range, the main tone of which depended on the length of the instrument. It follows from this that each particular French horn could play only in one specific key, and for the performance of any piece, several instruments of different sizes were required.Over time, the so-called crowns began to be used – tubes twisted into a ring, inserted between the mouthpiece and the main body of the French horn. They increased the length of the air channel and thus lowered the fundamental tone of the instrument. It became possible to switch to a different tonality without resorting to a whole “copper arsenal”, but simply by changing one crown to another or by combining them. It was much more practical. Even more successful was the invention of the Dresden French horn player Anton Gampel .Instead of bulky rings that interfere with the performer, he proposed Invention – arc-shaped tubes inserted into the middle of the air channel and placed inside the circumference of the instrument. French horns, on which this design was used, received the name of the Invention (later, the Inventions were also called crowns).

Fig. 2

French horns parts are always recorded without key signs. This tradition goes back to the times of removable crowns and inventions. The French horn player played in C major, and the key in which he actually found himself depended on the crown he chose.

The polyphonic structure of musical thinking at the beginning of the 18th century contributed to the search and development of the melodic resources of all instruments, without exception, including brass. The limitations associated with the inability to extract anything other than the overtone range brought the natural French horn (and trumpet) to a very high register. The fact is that the close arrangement of the upper overtones (see.rice. 3), allowed to play not only “golden moves” , but also more diverse melodic constructions.

Fig. 3

The upper register technique is called “clarino” . On average, the range of instruments ranged from the second to the twentieth and even the twenty-first overtones (although some musicians could extract the main tone, while others even reach the twenty-fourth)! It is difficult to imagine how the performers of that time, relying only on the capabilities of the labial apparatus, could accurately hit this or that sound, especially if it was not prepared by the previous text.

In the Brandenburg Concert No. 1 I.S. Bach used two French horns (more precisely, corni da caccia). The fourth movement of this piece (Concerto consists of four movements ) includes two minuets and a polonaise in between. In fact, there is one minuet, which is repeated twice, but with different trios. The trio of the “second” minuet is entrusted to two solo French horns – the rest of the instruments only accompany. Here is an example of using the clarino technique at corni da caccia.

For a number of reasons, the clarino style is always associated with the Baroque era. It is generally accepted that the music of classicism, which is already based on a different structure of musical thinking, interprets the possibilities of brass instruments in a different way. This opinion is true in relation to the classical symphony, but at the same time the huge amount of concert literature of that time, calculated on the capabilities of virtuosos, is overlooked. It is clear that the French horn parts in Haydn’s or Mozart’s divertissements differ significantly in style from Bach’s corni da caccia, but a lot of them are based on the use of the clarino technique. The fluency exhibited by French horns in the virtuoso literature of the Classicist era seems unsurpassed even thanks to improvements in the instrument undertaken at a later time.

Staccato French horn can be quite swift, double and triple are possible on it.True, with a very fast movement, the sounds acquire a somewhat viscous, “cooing” character and lose their distinctness. I must say that this makes a rather touching, but still comical impression, and you involuntarily agree with the statement that “fluency is not in the nature of this instrument” (W. Piston).

Here is a funny competition of four French horns arranged by J. Haydn in one of his divertissements.

Haydn wrote a lot of concert pieces especially for the French horn virtuoso Karl Franz, who served in the Esterhazy Chapel. The fact is that Prince Nikolai adored the French horn.

If you listen carefully, even in the absence of a score, you will notice that some of the sounds played by the horn player are not included in the overtone range. And they sound, these “illegal” notes, a little strange.( Details of the origin of such sounds will be discussed a little later. )

Meanwhile, French horns in classical chamber-concert music and French horns in classical symphony are completely different from each other. Of course, these are the same tools, but they have completely different purposes. The fact is that in the classical symphony the function of the brass instruments has radically changed. From melodic voices, they turned into voices that form harmony. Since the upper register is practically not needed to provide a full-fledged harmonic base, the clarino technique in symphonies was also not needed. The problem of modulation comes to the fore, without which a sonata-symphonic cycle is simply impossible. As a rule, composers chose several differently tuned instruments to solve this problem.Suppose, in the first part of the work, French horns of one system were played, and in the second – another and. etc. Even within the framework of one movement, instruments in different scales could be involved: one pair was responsible for the tonic, the second for the dominant or subdominant (Beethoven, Symphony No. 2, II movement – horns in E and in A). This was especially true for minor symphonies, since the overtone series does not contain a minor third in the middle register. For example, in the G minor symphony of W. A. Mozart, the French horns in G and in B are played in the first movement; in the second, both are in Es, i.e.j. this part is written in E flat major; in the third movement – in G and in the fourth again in G and in B.

The French horn was and remains an instrument of transposing . It must be remembered that French horns (unlike trumpets) are always transposed downward. The only non-transposing instrument is the now obsolete French horn in C-alto – apparently, it is a French horn without crowns. Correspondingly, the in C instrument transposes an octave down, the in B-alto French horn a large second down, and the B-basso a large non.( This is probably the largest French horn. Its main tone lies in the subcontroctave. )

The Baroque era preferred instruments of medium and low tunings, because their highest overtones sounded in the second octave. Remember Haydn’s divertissement in E flat major – the French horn in Es, which has a fundamental tone on the E flat of the controctave, got to A flat (!) Of the second octave, which corresponds to its twenty-first overtone. ( The French horn playing in the third octave is rather difficult to imagine.) The instruments of high tuning, which came into use in the era of classicism, were not suitable for the Clarino technique, but they felt light and comfortable in the middle register. For example, the “F” sound of the second octave for the in F horn is the sixteenth overtone, and for the in B-alto instrument it is only the twelfth. It is clear that it is much easier to play the twelfth overtone than the sixteenth, because the lips of the performer are less tense. Thus, the high-pitched French horns freely played their “golden moves” up to the second octave. Due to this, they not only provided a full-fledged harmonic accompaniment – sometimes they were entrusted with small thematic constructions. The beginning of the main part in the first movement of L. van Beethoven’s Heroic Symphony falls on the sounds of the overtone row, and later this music sounds several times on French horns. At that time, such a timbre solution within the framework of the symphony was a real find. In the scherzo from the same symphony, the ensemble, made up of three horns in Es, plays the theme of the trio almost unaccompanied. ( Although the instruments reach the sixteenth overtone, their playing, built on the same “golden moves”, has nothing to do with the technique of clarino.)

If you trace the French horns to the end of the trio, you will find a note that is not part of the overtone series. We have already encountered similar sounds in Haydn’s divertissements. But if in the chamber and concert works of the era of classicism this was a very common phenomenon, then in symphonies it was used quite rarely. We are talking about the so-called “closed sounds” . In 1753, Anton Gampel (already mentioned above) developed a technique for lowering or raising the natural sounds of a French horn. The essence of this technique is that the performer, placing his right hand in the bell of the instrument, partially blocked the air outlet and thereby could change the pitch. The degree of change depended on how deeply the hand sank. Unfortunately, the quality of the closed sounds left much to be desired – they were dull, squeezed, squeezed and, at times, did not at all resemble the sounds of a French horn. Doubtful sound and unreliability of intonation became the main obstacle to the widespread use of the technique of closed sounds in symphonic music.

One of the exceptional examples is the beginning of F. Schubert’s symphony in C major. The intro theme, assigned to two French horns in C, contains sounds that are not included in the overtone series (see Fig. 4).

Fig. 4

Notes that require insertion of a brush into the bell are marked with *.

However, the amazing possibilities that Gampel’s French horn technique opened up to natural horns could not leave indifferent either composers or performers of the late 18th century.- the beginning of the XIX century. Therefore, in applied music, designed for chamber ensembles and the skill of virtuoso soloists, closed sounds are used almost more often than open ones.

Here is what G. Berlioz writes in his “Great treatise on modern instrumentation and orchestration” about the use of closed sounds: “Old masters usually limited themselves to open sounds <>.Even Beethoven himself is extremely careful in the use of closed sounds, if he does not entrust solo French horns. Examples of them are quite rare in his orchestra, and if he resorts to them, it is almost always for the sake of some outstanding effect. <> Undoubtedly, such a course of action is infinitely better than the opposite, which is now assimilated by most French and Italian composers and consists in the fact that for French horns they write exactly the same as for bassoons and for clarinets, regardless of the huge difference between closed and open sounds and between one part of the closed sounds and the other. They do not care that it is difficult for the performer to take one or another note after the previous one, and that as a result of this difficulty, the sounds obtained with the bell closed by two-thirds or three-quarters become doubtful in their purity, weak or acquire a squeezed, completely unusual character. Finally, these masters, apparently, do not even suspect that a deeper knowledge of the nature of the instrument, good taste and common sense could help to understand the use of sounds that they, like schoolchildren, randomly throw into the orchestra.Even the very scarcity of our forefathers should certainly be preferred to this ignorant and disgusting waste. If closed sounds are not written for any special effect, at least those that sound too weak and are very different from other French horns should be avoided. ” Berlioz himself, despite the amazing boldness of his orchestral decisions, preferred, like the authors of classical symphonies, to combine instruments of different tunings. This provided a reliable and sound quality result. In Romeo and Julia, the author of the Big Treatise … used four French horns with different crowns in order to build a melodic line from their sounds. Even being forced to use closed sounds (to preserve the musical phrase), Berlioz always duplicates them with open sounds (see Fig. 5).

Fig. 5

Notes that require insertion of a brush into the bell are marked with *.

Nevertheless, the technique of closed sounds was used in playing the French horn until the last third of the 19th century.Concert literature of the first half of the century testifies to the excellent command of the French horn players of that time in the Gampel technique. In Concertino for French horn and orchestra K.M. Weber’s soloist plays any chromaticism absolutely freely (adjusted for the sound quality), and in cadence he demonstrates already completely unthinkable effects. At first, he manages to play and sing at the same time (!) – the result is a two-part voice. Then we hear the intervals only on the French horn (which is probably some kind of acoustic effect), and the performer’s voice turns them into chords (!!!).

Although Anton Gampel’s technique has been lost by performers of our time, the tradition of keeping the right hand in the bell of the instrument has survived to this day. This makes it possible to perceptibly adjust the pitch, thereby achieving purity of intonation. In addition, “locked” sounds were renamed “locked” and began to be used as a special timbre effect (see.Part II). 90 020 90 000 how to choose a pipe, how to smoke a pipe

Introduction

Welcome to the fascinating world of pipes and pipe tobacco! Despite the fact that each of us develops our own ideas about certain life situations and our own attitude towards them, I will nevertheless say with some degree of certainty that if pipe smoking is not your momentary hobby, then your life will never will be what it was before. For some, this hobby proceeds calmly, others devote their lives to this …

My path to the pipe was not thorny, but it was long. I can’t even formulate for myself what exactly pipe smoking attracted me. Perhaps it was inspired by images in literary novels, or maybe the aroma that good pipe tobacco exudes in my performances painted images of courageous heroes – I don’t know. One way or another, the pipe drew me to it. And every time, before starting, I read the existing materials and every time, except for the last, “horror stories” about the terribly complex and incredibly responsible rituals of smoking a new pipe and other delights accompanying pipe smoking, frightened me away.If I knew at least a tenth of what I know now, everything would be much easier …

In order for you to imagine how much my words can be trusted, I will say that my experience of smoking a pipe at the time I started working on this kind of FAQ is seven years. Of course, there are a lot of people who are much more experienced than me, but my words are based not on the systematization of what I read, but on specific, my own experience. So let’s start, perhaps.

1.Anatomy of a smoking pipe

First, let’s find out, what is a tube and how does it work.

“Classical” anatomy of briar and foam smoking pipes includes a mouthpiece and a stammel (stem and bowl). The most popular materials used in the manufacture of mouthpieces are acrylic and ebonite, but there are also mouthpieces made of wood, horn, and amber.

In the mouthpiece, you can distinguish mouthpiece and trunnion .In the filter tubes in the stem of the mouthpiece there is a chamber for replaceable filters. However, it should be emphasized that a careful fitting of the stem of the mouthpiece and mortise in the shank is one of the determining factors for high-quality and dry pipe smoking. And in filter tubes this factor is absent as a class.

The internal structure of the stammel – is a smoke channel and a tobacco chamber. At first glance, everything is simple, but how the pipe will smoke depends on the quality of alignment and execution of these parts of the pipe. This is called tube engineering. The smoke channel should exit exactly to the center of the bottom of the tobacco chamber without any displacement either vertically or horizontally. Otherwise, the tobacco will burn unevenly and the pipe will not finish smoking. You can check the alignment of the channels with a pipe cleaner by inserting it from the side of the mouthpiece into the assembled pipe – it should effortlessly pass through the pipe and exit into the tobacco chamber of the pipe. The diameter of the smoke channel in the shank should not be too narrow or too wide.It is believed that the optimal channel diameter is 4-4.2 mm, but on factory tubes it is usually somewhat narrower. I can only notice that during the seven years that I have been smoking a pipe, I had neither the need nor the desire to measure the diameter of the channel, and even more so to change it. However, when buying, you should pay attention to the pairing of the smoke channels of the mouthpiece and the shank, especially when choosing curved pipes. If the fit is not good enough, the pipe will become wet when smoked and the mouthpiece may whistle.

2. How to choose a smoking pipe

Questions “how to choose a smoking pipe” and “what is the right pipe” – are some of the most burning questions of the initial stage. I chose my first pipe very simply – I just went and bought it. It was an inexpensive briar bent apple with no filter and a small camera. Despite the fact that before buying, I gathered a lot of useful information from various sources, an important factor still influenced my purchase – I had to choose from what was in the store and at the same time fit into my budget.

2.1. First pipe budget

We are all different and each of us has a different attitude towards things and objects. Someone can afford an expensive pipe without thinking about the price, for someone the budget issue is quite acute. There is an opinion among the people that it is better to buy the cheap from the expensive than the expensive from the cheap, and I am inclined to agree with this. The handset should be purchased from the price range that is acceptable to you. Plus a little more. But, again, what this “plus” is equal to in monetary terms is up to you to decide. The only thing that can be said unequivocally is that the pipe must be briar. If for some reason you cannot purchase a briar pipe, then it makes sense to postpone the purchase for some time. Why? I will try to explain.

Pipes made of fruit tree species are not durable in themselves, pear, cherry, etc. wood does not possess the properties of briar, including such an important property as resistance to temperature influences. A short-lived thing, with rare exceptions, cannot be expensive and therefore it is simply inappropriate to invest expensive labor in an inexpensive thing. This means that technically such pipes will never be performed at the proper level and will literally be a double-edged sword. It seems to me that this alone is enough not to take seriously offers to buy such pipes. And the question of the taste of such pipes is not even worth it.

The appeal of foam pipes lies in only one thing – is considered, that they can be smoked several times in a row without damaging the pipe. Let’s try to make out this very “without prejudice” in words. What is the “damage” to the tube in this context? What can happen to a briar pipe if it is smoked several times in a row? Besides the fact that the walls of the tobacco chamber can burn, the pipe will lose its taste. Foam cannot burn, as well as lose taste, which it simply does not have. In addition, the wooden pipe has a certain charm, the lack of which, upon first acquaintance with the pipe, can lead to disappointment.

I want to draw your attention to this a little. “counts” I do not have enough experience with foam smoking pipes and myself was for a long time captivated by the myth that foam can be smoked several times in a row. However, one of my good friends says that meats need a longer rest than briar pipes. These are the words of an experienced pipe smoker and a good person, and I have no doubts either in his experience or in his words.

“… Look what happens to the foam if you don’t let it rest: Foam is a hygroscopic material that readily absorbs moisture, like a sponge. After smoking, the pipe is saturated with moisture, and if you do not let the pipe rest, it will start to warm up due to the accumulated moisture – the same effect as grabbing a hot frying pan with a wet cloth. “

Tubes made of ceramics, metal and other materials – are more decorative things than utilitarian ones.
Summing up the above, we can conclude: the pipe is worth buying for the maximum price you can afford to pay, plus a little more. And it should be a heather pipe.

2.2. Purchase. How to choose a smoking pipe?

After we have more or less decided on the purchase budget, it’s time to talk about those details that are worth paying attention to, both when buying your first pipe, and when buying pipes in general.

The first pipe has a very important role – its qualities will largely depend on whether you continue to smoke the pipe further or, disappointed, leave this business. And if you are on a budget, then there are a number of details that should be given special attention.

Tube shape

There are a large number of pipe shapes and indirectly, of course, the shape of the pipe affects smoking, but at the first stage, you can limit yourself to the criterion “like / dislike” when choosing the shape of the pipe. However, some shapes dictate a certain internal arrangement of the tubes, such as, for example, conical tobacco chambers, where the chambers taper towards the bottom. Such pipes require a little more attention to themselves when smoking, therefore, when buying the first pipe, you should get by with forms with a classic cylindrical tobacco chamber.

Straight or curved

Although curved tubing looks particularly attractive initially, I would recommend purchasing a straight or slightly bent tubing as your first tubing.Slightly curved tubes are easier to grip than straight, straight tubes are easier to clean. The bend of the pipes hides the pitfalls and the greater the bend of the pipe, the smaller the angle between the smoke. channel and adjacent bowl wall. The heavily curved pipes have a part of the wall at the entrance of the smoke. the channel into the tobacco chamber is very thin and it is quite easy to burn through it. In the future, this can lead to uneven combustion of tobacco due to uneven draft and, as a consequence, uneven heat distribution, which sooner or later will lead to burning of the walls of the tobacco chamber. So it makes sense to leave the purchase of strongly curved tubes until you gain experience.

Slightly curved and straight pipes are great for your first introduction to the world of pipe smoking.

With or without filter

In fact, this is one of the most controversial issues and, covering this issue, I will rely on my own experience. My first pipe was a pipe without a filter. Then it happened by chance and it was also luck. Why? A significant proportion of people begin their acquaintance with tobacco with flavored blends. And I was no exception here. Flavored tobacco blends, especially in the lower price range, are often flavored with not the most natural ingredients. These mixtures can leave an uncomfortable sensation on the tongue. The filter smoothes the taste, hides it a little. It also affects the manifestations of discomfort in the tongue. On the one hand, this is good. On the other hand, it lowers your threshold for the sensitivity of the combustion temperature of tobacco. Thus, to avoid burns to the tongue, you will have to smoke a pipe without a filter willy-nilly, rather than a pipe with a filter. Thanks to this “Brazilian system”, my first pipe was well-smoked and avoided possible suffering, and I quickly developed the right rate of smoking. So as the first tube, I would recommend a tube without a filter.

Finish: smooth, sandblast, rust

By and large, the finish of a pipe is an aesthetic component and the finish does not affect the quality of smoking. So here you can be guided by your own taste when choosing. However, among inexpensive pipes, varnished pipes are often found – these are best avoided.Although at the first stage I had a varnished pipe and I see nothing catastrophic in purchasing it. By the time I began to perceive the taste of pipes, I was already smoking other pipes, while the lacquered pipe was in circulation, I did not feel the taste of the pipe so well as to feel the effect of the lacquer on it.

On budget pipes with a smooth natural finish, you can often find sandpits and putties. And although they do not have a big effect on smoking (if not end-to-end), their presence can be considered hack.Such tubes should go under the blast. Expensive and handmade pipes shouldn’t have them at all.

Brands

It is difficult to advise any particular brand, new pipes in the $ 100-250 range are roughly similar in quality. It is important that it is a more or less well-known brand and that NoName pipes are best avoided.

New or used

There is nothing wrong with buying estate pipes. Buying and exchanging smoked pipes among pipe smokers is a common thing. If you trust the seller, if you like the pipe, if you have no preconceptions about used things, then why not? Often, when buying such pipes, you can save a little, this is important when you are on a tight budget. However, “the right of the first night” is also an important factor when purchasing the first pipe, and here your own “I” will serve as the best advisor.

Buy

Directly in the store, determine the circle of pipes of interest to you from three to five pieces.Turn them in your hands, feel how they fit in your hand, take a closer look at the uniformity of the finish. Feel the weight of the tubes – the lighter the tube, the better the briar it is made of and the easier it is to hold it in your teeth. Take a closer look at the pairing of the mouthpiece and shank – they should match completely and there should be no protrusions. Disassemble the pipes by rotating the clockwise mouthpiece – mouthpieces should not fall out and should not be excessively tight. The pins of the mouthpieces should be well fitted and the mouthpieces should be twisted with some, but not excessive, effort.Try to pull air through the mouthpiece on the assembled tube – the air should pass freely and silently. If you hear a whistle, then moisture will accumulate inside.

If you are inspecting tubes with a filter, ask for one filter and check its fit in the filter chamber – it should not dangle and should be inserted with a slight click. A new dry filter should be removed without much effort, it should be remembered that after smoking, the moisture filter swells a little and if it fits too tightly, then when removed it may tear and remove the remnants, although it will not be very difficult, but still with a similar regularity procedures, the joy of shopping will be replaced by disappointment.

Pay special attention to the inspection of the smoke outlet. channel from the shank to the tobacco chamber – the groove from the drill should go exactly to the center of the bottom of the tobacco chamber. There should be no displacements either vertically or horizontally. In other words, smoke exit. the channel should not stick out above the bottom, should not be buried in the bottom, should not go either to the right or to the left of the center of the bottom of the tobacco chamber.

Check the alignment of the smoke. channels of the mouthpiece and shank by inserting a brush from the side of the mouthpiece – it should freely pass through the entire pipe and exit into the center of the tobacco chamber.Condensation will accumulate in places where the ruff clings.

Often, tubes in a store are stored in a shop window, and not infrequently under the open rays of the sun. This can harm the ebony pipe mouthpieces, they can begin to oxidize and change their color. If the pipes you choose from have ebonite mouthpieces, pay attention to their color – it should be even, black, without any enlightenment.

So, by the method of elimination, you will have one pipe in your hands.

Purchase in the online store.

If you are going to buy the first / or first / handset in an online store, then you should choose trusted stores that value their authority. There are not many of them. Since you will have to choose a tube from a photograph, make sure you have the correct size for the tube. Good shops pay special attention to specifying all pipe dimensions: length, weight, dimensions of the tobacco chamber, the presence or absence of a filter, etc. Print a photo at a 1: 1 scale and take a closer look. Reputable stores do double sampling of pipes. The first is when the products are selected from the supplier and the second is before shipment to the buyer. So, when purchasing a smoking pipe remotely, it is more important to pay attention to the choice of a store.

It is better to postpone shopping on eBay and from unknown sellers until you have a clear idea of what to watch, where to look and how to look.

What else?

In addition to the tube, you will need to buy some accessories for it. First of all – a set of pipe cleaners. The choice of them is not too large and the most popular are the Big Ben sets for 100 ruffs in a package and “Tobacco shop” rigid sets for 200 pieces in a package. I also use such ruffs. The first ones are a little softer and collect moisture well. The latter are tougher, they are good for cleaning the tobacco chamber after smoking.

You will also need a “tee” – an awl, spoon and tamper in one set. At the initial stage, only a tamper is needed from this kit to trample tobacco. We’ll talk more about this later when we touch on where these items are used.

If you settled on buying a tube with a filter, then you will need to buy filters of the corresponding diameter. Most of the tubes in Russian stores are made with a filter chamber diameter of 9 mm; the range of filters for such tubes is relatively wide. At one time I used Stanwell charcoal filters and Savinelli balsa filters.

You can light the pipe with both matches and a lighter. No special matches are required, and if everything is clear with them, then pipe lighters are a separate and rather large line of accessories for the pipe. The choice here is incredibly large – from budget plastic to gold, gem-adorned exhibits. The peculiarity of pipe lighters is that the flame burns at an angle to the lighter. This helps keep your fingers from getting burned. Don’t be distracted by turbo lighters – they can damage your pipe. I now prefer to use silicon lighters, as my experience has shown them to be more durable than piezo lighters. Although I have used matches for a long time, I saw my special charm in this. Also, a simple foldable pipe stand and case will do the trick if you will not only smoke your pipe at home.

3. Is there a “right tobacco”? How to choose tobacco?

Tobacco, tobacco, tobacco … Everything began with him, everything rests on him and everything can end with him. Many people come to pipe smoking through the aromas of tobacco that they have felt at one time or another. Most, but not all, start out with flavored blends, and for sure when you decided to buy a pipe, you imagined exactly what you would like to taste from your pipe. Isn’t it nice when clouds of fragrant smoke spread throughout the room, carrying pleasant smells of vanilla, wild cherry or freshly roasted coffee to its corners? People around turn in your direction and respectfully nod their heads: oh, this person knows a lot about good tobacco …

So what exactly is the right tobacco?

It’s simple. The right tobacco is the tobacco you like. Here and now. Be guided when choosing both the first tobacco and subsequent ones, your own taste and your own desires. Want to taste cherries? Try it! Want to impress others with a pleasant vanilla scent? Forward! Do you think that tobacco should not have introduced aromas? It is your right! A huge number of good unflavored concoctions are waiting for you.
On the modern Russian market there is a considerable amount of tobacco blends for almost every taste. The choice can be difficult, but the mixture with which character to choose no one but yourself can tell you. Some stores can provide you with samples – open pouches that you can smell when you smell the mixture. But more often you have to choose at random.

Remember that a pipe is not a hookah, but good pipe tobacco is first of all tobacco, and then everything else. If you are choosing a flavored tobacco blend, remember that the flavor of the tobacco itself must be different behind the added flavor. And this scent should be pleasant. The more powerful the aromatization, the, most often, the worse the tobacco raw materials used to create these mixtures. You should not chase cheap tobacco, as most often it is no longer tobacco, but technology. Pipe tobacco must retain its moisture and you should be careful when buying tobacco in plastic pouches – this tobacco is not intended for long-term storage and may turn out to be dry.

When choosing tobacco you shouldn’t rush anywhere, you shouldn’t buy dozens of mixtures, because most of them can expect a sad fate to become a remedy for fighting moths in your wardrobes.Tobacco is a huge and fascinating world, try to learn how to smoke the acquired tobacco mixture to the end. If you do not like tobacco, then before putting it aside, try to fully understand what exactly you do not like in this tobacco. This will help you gain experience faster and help avoid similar repetitions in the future, saving both time and money.

Over time, you will learn how to navigate in the assortment of tobacco, knowledge about the manufacturers, about the components of the tobacco mixture will help you get a general idea of the mixture even before buying it.But this is later, but for now, when choosing the first mixture, be guided by your own taste and your own ideas about what the aroma should be, poured out of your pipe when smoking.

4. Pipe smoking

Now you have purchased your first pipe, accessories, and selected tobacco. All this splendor lies in front of you, pleasing to the eye and pleasing your vanity. You did everything right and it makes your soul even warmer. And what to do next with all this?

4.1. How to fill a smoking pipe

The root of most pipe smoking problems is wrong stuffing. Too loose packing allows air to pass at a higher speed during puffs, and too tight packing increases the force of the puffs themselves. Both cases lead to an increase in the smoking temperature, which, in turn, can lead to the formation of burnouts. Not to mention the fact that pipe smoking turns from pleasure into the pursuit of it.

If you feel a lack of experience, then first you should follow a number of simple rules:

  • Make sure the tobacco is at the correct moisture content. To do this, squeeze a pinch of tobacco between your fingers – after releasing, the tobacco should smoothly straighten. If the tobacco crumbles and falls apart right away, it is too dry. If the pinch remains compressed, the moisture content of the tobacco is too high. It is better not to stuff such tobacco into the pipe.
  • Before stuffing the tube, thoroughly, but not dust, knead the tobacco until the fractions of the same size are obtained.
  • Pour the tobacco into the bowl up to the top and apply it over the entire surface to 1/3 of the bowl. Add the tobacco again and crush it down to about the middle of the pipe. Pour the tobacco back up to the top of the bowl and crush it, leaving a gap of about 5 mm from the top of the bowl.
  • When falling asleep to tobacco the second and third times, check your cravings periodically. After filling, the tube should be pulled with only a little effort, and this effort is similar to drinking juice through a straw.Do not forget that in the process of smoking tobacco expands and, at first glance, the packing “a little denser than usual” can eventually lead to the loss of traction altogether.
  • If you are in doubt about the correct filling, it is better to empty the tobacco completely and fill the pipe again.
  • Always fill your pipe with as much tobacco as you intend to smoke.

All this only at first glance seems complicated and too time consuming. A little experience and the question “How to fill the pipe?” you will no longer be bothered – you can do it with your eyes closed and in any position.

  • First, I knead the tobacco in the same way until I get uniform fractions. I am focusing again on this point, because this point often goes unnoticed. Even warming up the tobacco will allow the tobacco to lie flat in the bowl, without the formation of voids, burn evenly and without the appearance of pinpoint foci of increased temperature. So this point is quite important when preparing tobacco for packing and smoking.
  • In the same way, I pour tobacco into the bowl up to the top and, lightly tapping on the bowl, let the tobacco settle evenly in it.
  • Then I take a pinch of tobacco, equal in volume to about half or even 2/3 of the bowl, and already crush the tobacco poured into the bowl with it. Do not squeeze a pinch of tobacco with your fingers; the tobacco in your hand should be somewhat “airy”.
  • After inserting the cork into the bowl, with my thumbs from the edges of the bowl towards the center, I begin to gradually crush the tobacco. Not with one pressure at once, but with light movements in a circle. By the way the tobacco springs under your fingers, you can understand how dense the packing is. If it is too dense, then the excess tobacco protruding above the bowl can be removed at any time. There is no need to knock out all the tobacco from the bowl and start all over again. With experience, you will gain an understanding of how tobacco behaves under your fingers and how to interpret its elasticity, and until that moment, control the thrust by sipping air through the mouthpiece.
  • The surface of tobacco stuffed into a pipe should recede from the top edge of the bowl by 4-5 mm – when smoking, the top layers of tobacco rise and when stuffed under the edge of the bowl, burning tobacco can scorch the edges of the bowl or even spill out of the pipe.

Basically, this method is a cross between Frank’s method, air-cushion tube packing and three-hand packing. What is the beauty of this method? It lacks the disadvantage that is inherent in the “three-handed” method – there are no density boundaries in the packing. In those moments when, in the first method, we trample the tobacco first up to one third, then again and again, dense areas are formed on the surfaces of the pressed boundaries. Very often in these places the tube goes out. It’s not scary, but if you can avoid it, then it makes sense to try? When stuffing in this way, the density of tobacco is gradually discharged from top to bottom, which minimizes the appearance at the bottom of coked “cakes” of half-burnt tobacco.

I understand that at the initial stage I want to know the exact numbers: what to take, how much to take, how and with what force to trample, but, alas, there are no such recipes. Different tobacco is stuffed in different ways, you can also say: how you knead the tobacco, so it will smoke.

It is worth noting the fact that tobacco expands during smoking, and at the bottom of the bowl it can become saturated with moisture. This is especially true for tobacco stuffed into a tube from a freshly opened can. It will not be superfluous to leave some margin in the packing density, so as not to lose traction later while smoking.

Correctly filled tube pulls easily, without much effort. The closest comparison I’ve come across is sipping juice through a straw. With a similar force, air should be drawn from a properly filled smoking pipe.

4.2. How to light a pipe

The ritual of preparing the pipe for smoking is complete and it is time to start smoking. Now we will need the tamper, which we talked about above, as well as matches or a lighter and, of course, a pipe properly filled with tobacco. Lighting a pipe is one of the most unpleasant procedures for a pipe – at the moments of lighting, the temperature in the tobacco chamber reaches its maximum. No, of course, when smoking, you can reach much higher temperatures by setting such a goal, but we will not consider such situations.

The fact that the moments of lighting up can become unpleasant for the pipe does not mean at all that you have to tremble over the pipe, covered with a perspiration of cold sweat. No. Enough simple accuracy and attention. Do not try to light the pipe the first time and at any cost smoke it to the end from the first lighting. It doesn’t make any sense.

With the first lighting, we lift a pile of tobacco from the surface. In fact, this is the meaning and purpose of the first pass of fire over the tobacco surface.Bring a lighted match or lighter to the tobacco, keeping the fire 2-3 mm above the tobacco surface, start driving over the tobacco, making short and light puffs. Start lighting from the center and spiral towards the edges of the tobacco chamber. However, when approaching the edges, be careful and careful – the fire should not touch the briar. Light and brief contact with the fire on the briar will not do much harm, but the edges may darken and the appearance of the pipe will lose its attractiveness. During lighting, you should not pull the air into yourself, trying to draw the fire deep into the tobacco, the fire should only touch the surface, raising the particles of tobacco during the first pass.Four to five seconds is usually sufficient for the first pass.

Now we take the tamper in our hands and, removing the pipe from our mouth, without applying any effort, we crush the reared tobacco. The tamper’s own weight is sufficient to perform this operation, and there is no need to exert efforts to level the tobacco surface with the tamper. After that, just like the first time, we pass the fire over the surface of the tobacco, while making short, light and not sharp puffs – the tobacco begins to engage. Then I, without removing the pipe from my mouth, holding the cup with one hand, walk the tamper, which I hold in the other hand, over the surface of the tobacco.Taking short puffs, I crush the tobacco also in a spiral and crush it with my own tamper weight or with a little effort. With very little.

I will try to illustrate my actions with words: I cover the tobacco with the heel of the tamper and take 2-3 short puffs. This allows you to slightly increase the combustion area. And here you do not need to make sudden movements, everything is done smoothly, calmly and without haste.

If, after such a passage, the tobacco still goes out, it’s okay. After these actions, from the third lighting, the tobacco is occupied evenly and over the entire surface. There is no need to limit yourself to one, two or three approaches to lighting a cigarette – we are not in a competition. Our task is to smoke tobacco evenly and over the entire surface. Light the cigarette as many times as you need to achieve this goal. Just avoid prolonged temperature exposure to the tobacco surface and the walls of the tobacco chamber. If you didn’t manage to smoke two or three times, just increase the pause between bringing the fire to the tobacco.Do not let the briar heat up.

Well, that’s all. The pipe is lit, fragrant smoke is pouring from the bowl. Congratulations, we’re finally getting to the very beginning! 🙂

4.3. How to smoke a pipe

Smoke temperature

People knowingly came up with the term “cool smoking” – the pipe should not heat up when smoking. As absurd as it sounds, it really is. Our task is not to smoke a pipe, but to keep the tobacco smoldering. Tightens should not be frequent and they should not be harsh. They can be long, but you need to draw in the smoke slowly and at the same time your cheeks should certainly not be drawn in from the effort. Everything should be smooth and calm. No rush. Pay attention to the temperature of the smoke pouring from the mouthpiece onto your tongue – you shouldn’t feel it. If you feel the warmth of the smoke, you should moderate the pace. And certainly the smoke should not leave unpleasant sensations on the tongue, and even more so should not burn it. Some tobaccos / and most often flavored tobacco blends / slightly tingle the tongue when smoking, but these sensations differ from temperature effects. The temperature of the smoke intensifies the tingling sensation and hot smoking of the tweezers can be very unpleasant. You should feel the smoke in your mouth, but not the temperature.

Tube temperature

I compare the temperature of the pipe bowl while smoking to the temperature of the human body. If you pick up the phone in your hand and feel a living warmth comparable to your body temperature, everything is in order. If you feel the temperature of a child with a cold with your palm, then there is no reason for panic, but peace is necessary.Just slow down a little. If you feel a fever with your hand, at which you would call an ambulance for a person, then it’s time to intervene in the process. Reduce the pace to a minimum, only occasionally inhale to maintain smoking. You can put the pipe aside for a while. Complete cessation of smoking is not necessary here, but a significant reduction in the rate – yes.

Of course, such a comparison is somewhat arbitrary, much depends on the thickness of the walls of the bowl, but the general direction is correct. There are no rules for six seconds. If you can hold the pipe in your hand for six seconds and by the seventh it burns you, it’s a disaster. This means that the briar is already on fire and you are literally smoking your pipe, not the tobacco in it. The pipe should not burn for the first second, nor for the seventh, nor for the tenth, nor at all. The pipe may be warm, but not hot. And if you called a doctor for a person with such a temperature, then intervention is required in the smoking process. In the form of slowing down the pace or even cooling off on the sidelines, depending on the “neglect of the case.”

Trampling while smoking

From time to time, while smoking, it becomes necessary to slightly crush the tobacco. This must be done so that the pipe does not die out completely. This trampling is similar to the second step of lighting up – covering the light with the tamper heel, light up the dying light with short puffs and achieve uniform smoldering on the surface. And in the same way – no effort, no sudden movements and trample the tamper with our own weight, crushing the ashes. It is not difficult to catch the moment – the smoke flowing out of the mouthpiece becomes very little and the influence of the air admixing to it and its slight coolness is noticeable.Take the ash and light the pipe a little. You should not bring the combustion back to its original form when you just lit the pipe. Just get back into the mainstream of smoking, smoldering tobacco. Unhurried and cool.

After smoking, after a slight trampling, has returned to its normal course, I lightly tap the bowl with my finger and drop the ash that has accumulated in the bowl by this moment into the ashtray. I do not turn the tube over, but simply tilt it. Together with the ashes, several smoldering tobacco flakes can fall into the ashtray – it’s okay.If the pipe is filled correctly, then the main coal together with tobacco will remain in the bowl without any inclinations towards the exit.

5. How to smoke a pipe

Fumigation of a pipe can hardly be called a process, is rather a period of time. The period during which the walls of the tobacco chamber are covered with carbon deposits formed from the combustion products of tobacco. Does this impose any restrictions on the smoking process itself during this period? No. You should always smoke calmly, slowly and coolly.Regardless of whether your pipe is stoned or not. Even the most superbly stoned pipe with a diamond hardness carbon deposit is not difficult to burn through. I realized a long time ago that there is no smoking process, you just need to be a little more careful about smoking and controlling the temperature until the tobacco chamber is covered with a layer of carbon of sufficient thickness. Now I think that all the time you need to smoke as if I were smoking a pipe. And it is right. (c) If you pay attention to the details from the very beginning, you will quickly develop the desired smoking rate and soon the need to constantly monitor the temperature, as well as the need to pay increased attention to the pipe, will simply disappear.

If you are just getting acquainted with the world of pipe smoking, then advice on phased smoking will not be superfluous, when the first few times you smoke a half full, or even 1/3, pipe and then gradually bring to smoking a pipe with a full filling. In addition to the fact that carbon deposits will gradually begin to build up from the bottom of the tube, from the bottom, which, in general, is also important, you yourself will gradually get used to the tube. The smoking process cannot be called difficult, however, for a beginner, it can be fraught with surprises in the form of its duration and the need for constant concentration throughout the entire process. And until your actions have reached full automatism, try to start smoking in stages – this will help you gradually merge into the process without having to make any efforts on yourself.

Most of the new pipes sold today have a tobacco chamber coating. It is believed that this coating is designed to protect the pipe from burning during the period of smoking. You should not rely on him too much and you need to smoke the pipe gently, leisurely and calmly all the time.

Separately, I would like to talk about the methods of “accelerating” and shortening the smoking period: smearing the tobacco chamber with honey, soaking it in cognac or smearing it with ash – I tried everything or almost everything. The only thing it led to was that I had to clean off the carbon deposits and start all over again. Believe me, you shouldn’t waste your time on this. The carbon deposits will be loose, dirty, and the taste of the pipe will be spoiled.

6. Which tobacco to choose for smoking a pipe?

I deliberately placed this section not under “Choosing Tobacco”, but placed closer to “Smoking a Pipe”. And just as there is no “process of smoking a pipe,” there is no special tobacco for smoking. However, there are some guidelines you can follow when choosing the flavor group for your first pipe and the next. The essence boils down to smoking during the period of smoking the pipe, the tobacco of the flavor group, the mixtures of which will be smoked from this pipe later. In other words: the pipe for Latakia is smoked with Latakia, for Virginia – with Virginia, for flavored tobacco blends – flavored tobacco. That’s all, actually.

Would a Latakia pipe be smoked better if smoked by Virginia? Will the pipe become sweeter when smoked with vanilla? No.The pipe first absorbs the aromas of tobacco smoking from it, and then begins to return it. This process is cyclical and after a couple of cycles no one will remember what and how was smoked from it for the first time. So smoke what you like with the pipe, but stick to the flavor group you choose for the pipe and the pipe will reward you with a mild and pleasant taste. You can also visit the section of our website: “Pipe tobacco – descriptions and reviews” and choose your own tobacco to your taste.

In the second part of “Tips for Beginners” we will talk in more detail about pipe care, cleaning, storing pipes and tobacco and other interesting things in our pipe-smoking life.

Varieties of swimming tubes

The snorkel (breathing tube) is one of the main elements of diving equipment, it allows the swimmer, who is in the near-surface layers of water, to breathe atmospheric air without raising his head above the water to inhale.

The size of modern tubes is standardized and is: length 350-450 mm, and inner diameter 18-22 mm. Attempts to improve the tube by increasing its length and inner diameter have led to little, because the main limitation for this was the physiological capabilities of a person. Already when diving to a depth of one meter, the swimmer is exposed to a hydrostatic pressure of 0.1 atm., And the total force of water pressure on the chest area is about 60 kgf. To overcome this pressure, the respiratory muscles have to expend a tremendous effort, while the swimmer will be able to breathe in such conditions for a short time (according to the results of the experiments of the German physiologist Stiegler, about 30 seconds). In addition, in the elongated tube after exhalation, there remains old air with a high content of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), which, upon repeated inhalation, will again enter the swimmer’s body, and can cause Hypercapnia.

Breathing tubes are used in diving, snorkeling, spearfishing, as well as for training in the pool. When choosing a tube, consider the purpose for which it will be used.

Plain tube (without valves)

The simplest and usually inexpensive option.Has the widest range of applications among tubes. Such tubes are more often used by experienced swimmers, since strong lungs are required from the water that fills it to blow.

Advantages:
+ Low cost.
+ Wide range of applications (diving, spearfishing, snorkeling).

Disadvantages:
To purge the tube from water, full lungs are required.
For beginners, this tube will be difficult to use.

Tube with bottom (drain) valve

The most common type of tubing, used by both beginners and professionals. The drain valve is located at the bottom of the tube. Structurally, it is a non-return type poppet valve. It facilitates the removal of water by breathing lightly into the tube. Also, in the upper part of the tube, a wave breaker can be located, which prevents overflowing water and the ingress of splashes into the tube when sailing in windy weather or when the sea is slightly rough.

Benefits:
+ Ease of use (great for beginners).
+ Wide range of applications (diving, spearfishing, snorkeling).

Disadvantages:
With intensive breathing, part of the air rushes through the bottom valve into the water and a characteristic grunting sound is heard, frightening the fish, which is critical for spear hunters.

Tube with two valves (dry tube)

Two-valve tubes are most often used by beginners in snorkeling, or by underwater hunters in the winter season (to avoid contact of cold water with their teeth).A shut-off valve is located at the top of the tube, and a drain valve at the bottom. The shut-off valve is a simple mechanism, in the form of a float at the top of the tube, which, when immersed in water, floats up, shutting off the flow of water into the tube.

Advantages:
+ No water enters the tube.
+ Ease of use (great for beginners).

Disadvantages:
Grains of sand or algae can enter the mechanism of the shut-off valve, disrupting its normal operation.
It is impossible to dive to a depth of more than a couple of meters, as a vacuum is created inside the tube and begins to suck the tongue into the tube.

Front tube (center tube)

For pool training, it is best to choose a tube with a frontal (center) rather than a lateral position in relation to the face. Manufacturers of sports equipment for swimming produce such tubes specifically for training swimmers.

Advantages:
+ The use of a front tube reduces water resistance, which allows for faster swimming speed and reduces tube vibration.

Disadvantages:
Narrow scope.
