17 Simple Home DIY Projects That Will Save You Money

17 Simple Home DIY Projects That Will Save You Money

Is it better to DIY a project or to hire someone to do it for you? This is a question homeowners often find themselves asking. While it’s best to leave some projects to professionals, such as installing new windows or changing the location of your home’s plumbing, plenty of tasks are easy enough to do on your own.

If you want to reduce the costs of homeownership and feel a sense of accomplishment about a job well done, here’s how to save money by doing-it-yourself.

Home DIY Project Ideas for Inside the House

From the kitchen to the bathroom and from the laundry room to the living room, there are plenty of places where you can save money by taking on simple DIY projects to do at home.

1. Make Your Own Cleaners

The cleaning aisles at many big-box stores feature an array of colorful bottles, all of which promise to take on some tough cleaning jobs and leave your home smelling terrific. Although it’s convenient to buy cleaners, you can stand to save a considerable amount of money if you make your own at home. Plus, when you make your cleaning products yourself, you know exactly what ingredients are in them and don’t have to worry that you’re exposing your family to harsh chemicals.

How much can you save by DIY-ing your cleaning products? It all depends on the product. A citrus-scented kitchen cleaner can cost as little as four cents per ounce to make, while a store-bought version costs approximately 10 cents per ounce, depending on brand, store and location.

There are numerous DIY cleaning product recipes out there. If you’re not sure where to start, purchase some distilled white vinegar, a box of baking soda and some castile soap and you’ll be good to go.

Another thing worth considering if you want to save money: cleaning your home yourself. Nationwide, the average cost of a housekeeping service is $167 per session. In Central Pennsylvania, the average price is slightly higher, at around $171. Meanwhile, if you dust, vacuum or otherwise tidy up on your own, all you need to worry about is the cost of your cleaning products.

2. Install a Low-Flow Faucet

The average household spends around $1,000 on water use annually. If you haven’t already done so, replacing your house’s existing faucets, showerheads and toilets with low-flow WaterSense models can help reduce your water bill by around 20 percent.

The complexity of your faucet-replacing project depends on your preference. You can go all out and replace the entire fixture with a more efficient model, which has the EPA’s WaterSense label. A simpler, less expensive option is to replace the aerator at the tip of the faucet with a low-flow model.

3. Install a Ceiling Fan

Installing a ceiling fan in your living room, bedroom or elsewhere in your house can help you save money in a few ways. In the summer, if you use a ceiling fan along with your home’s air conditioning, you can set the thermostat up to four degrees hotter without noticing any difference in comfort. A ceiling fan can also help you keep your house warm in the winter, as long as you reverse the direction the blades spin.

You don’t have to be a DIY superstar to install a ceiling fan. The most important thing to remember if you’re trading a lighting fixture for the fan is that you need to change out the electrical box. Electrical boxes made for lights aren’t strong enough to support the increased weight of a fan.

4. Paint a Room

One simple DIY home improvement project for beginners is to give the walls a new coat of paint. If you hire a professional to paint a room in your home, the cost can be anywhere from $380 to $790. If you DIY, the cost is usually under $300. Multiple factors influence how much it costs to paint a room, from the quality of paint you use to the size of the room. Higher-quality or specialty paint usually costs more, but tends to have a longer usage life compared to low-quality paint. Paint is an outstanding way to refresh the interior of your home and make it feel brand-new without having to pay for a whole-room redecoration.

5. Do At-Home Dry Cleaning

Although the best way to save on dry cleaning costs is to buy machine-washable clothing, the occasional “dry-clean-only” garment is sometimes unavoidable. One easy way to cut the cost and hassle of bringing your clothes to the dry cleaner is to purchase an at-home dry cleaning kit.

Home dry cleaning kits let you clean up to five garments at once, using a special bag, a pre-treated cloth and your dryer. The kits also often come with a stain remover and a deodorizer to help you get spots or strong odors out of your clothing.

At-home dry cleaning kits can save you time and money, but remember, they won’t completely replace your dry cleaner. If you’ve spilled something greasy or grimy on your clothing, your best bet is to bring it to a professional cleaner.

6. Install a Water Filter Under the Sink

If you don’t like the taste of your home’s tap water and you’ve been buying bottled water to drink, installing a filter under your sink can help you save money. You’ll save both on the cost of the installation if you DIY and on the expense of bottled water. An under-sink water filter is also a bit more convenient than pitchers with built-in filters, as you don’t need to remember to fill up the pitcher every time you refresh your beverage.

Under-sink water filters vary in price considerably, but you can most likely find an option for less than $100. Filters that use a multi-stage filtering process can cost substantially more.

7. Re-Caulk Your Tub or Shower

Caulk creates a tight seal around your bathtub or shower, reducing water damage. It’s a good idea to occasionally recaulk your tub or shower to keep mold and mildew growth down and to protect the fixtures in your bathroom. Recaulking your tub or shower isn’t an expensive or difficult project.

To do it, you need some supplies, such as painter’s or masking tape, a caulk gun and caulk designed for use in the bathroom or other wet areas. You’ll also want a knife to cut away the old caulk. When applying the new caulk, place the tip of the caulking gun into the area being sealed and use light pressure to create a thin line of caulk. You can run a finger along the line of caulk once you’re finished to clean it up and give it a neat appearance.

DIY Projects to Save Money Outside the House

DIY projects don’t only take place inside your home. Some exterior projects are easy enough to tackle on your own and can help you save money.

1. Start a Vegetable Garden

Depending on how much outdoor space you have, a vegetable garden in your backyard can produce more than $650 worth of vegetables and fruits. The initial startup cost of a food garden is often less than $250, making it a cheap DIY project for your home that has a high return on investment.

If you’ve never gardened before, it’s a good idea to start small, so you can keep costs low and don’t take on more than you can handle. Plant one or two of your favorite vegetables and see how things go. If you get good yields, you can expand the size of your garden in future years.

2. Mow the Lawn

Lawn care service in Central Pennsylvania costs an average of $225, well above the national average of $136. You can easily save money by mowing the lawn yourself, even if you have to buy a lawnmower. Another way to cut the cost of lawn care is to split the expense of a lawnmower with a few neighbors. You can set up a schedule for sharing the mower and store it in a communal area.

3. Plant a Tree

Planting a tree on your property can help you reduce your cooling costs by up to 35 percent. Depending on the position of the tree, it can protect your home, yard or driveway from the afternoon sun. A tree that provides shade to your central air conditioning unit can also help lower energy costs, as it allows the unit to work more efficiently.

4. DIY Snow Removal

If you’re in good physical health, you can save money by taking on snow and ice removal in the winter, compared to hiring someone else to do it. Shoveling your walkway or the steps up to your porch can also give you a good workout.

Just remember to play it safe when removing snow. Only shovel lightweight, powdery snow and use your legs, not your back, to lift. Take your time while shoveling: It’s OK to take breaks or to stretch, especially if you’re starting to feel tired.

5. Paint Your Porch or Deck

Even if you’re not trying to sell your home, maintaining its curb appeal is essential. One easy way to refresh the exterior of your house is to repaint the porch or restain the deck. Repainting your porch also lets you express the personality of your home by choosing a new color.

It can cost more than $500 to hire someone to stain your deck, including the costs of labor, stain and supplies. Meanwhile, if you DIY, you only have to pay for stain, which often starts at approximately $20 per gallon, and supplies such as brushes and painter’s tape, which can cost around $20 as well.

Easy DIY Projects in the Garage or Driveway

If you own a car, there are some care and maintenance projects you can do yourself to help lower the total cost of ownership.

1. Change Your Car’s Oil

Your car needs oil to run, and that oil needs regular replacing and refilling for best results. Although the old recommendation was to replace your oil every 3,000 miles, newer cars can often go for up to 10,000 miles before needing an oil change.

Your vehicle’s manual will let you know how frequently you need to be changing the oil. It will also let you know what type of oil to buy and what filter you need.

Along with replacing your car’s oil as recommended, it’s also a good idea to check the level every month or so. Checking your car’s oil levels will let you know if there’s a leak or other problem that a mechanic should check out. Spotting any issues early on can help you save money on costly repairs.

2. Check Your Tires

How fuel-efficient your car is and how safe it is to drive depends in large part on the tires. It’s worth keeping your tires inflated to the recommended pressure to help improve its gas mileage. Checking the tires for wear can also let you know if it’s time for a replacement set.

You can evaluate the wear and tear on your tire treads using a penny. Place a penny into the tread of one of the tires on your car, so Lincoln is facing you and is upside down. If you can see the top of his head on the penny over the tread of the tire, the tire has worn down enough to need replacement.

3. Wash Your Car at Home

Taking your car to the carwash can be a way to save time. If you want to save money, though, the best option is to wash your car at home. You can also save money when you wash your car at home by using a hose with an automatic shutoff nozzle that will keep water from flowing out of the hose when you’re not actively using it.

4. Replace Your Windshield Wipers

The windshield wiper blades on your car can wear out over time and usually need replacing at some point. Maintaining your wiper blades is a vital part of keeping your vehicle safe to drive. The blades need to be able to remove snow and rain effectively, and they can’t do that if they get worn down.

You can bring your car to a dealer or auto parts store and have them replace the blades for you, but the project is easy to DIY and will save you the cost of labor. Usually, replacing the blades means sliding the old, worn ones out of the wiper and slipping in the new ones.

It is essential to buy the right wiper blades for your car, but any place that sells replacement blades should have a reference book on hand where you can quickly look up the model number that’s right for your vehicle.

5. Replace Your Battery

Your car battery is likely to need replacing after a few years on the road. Although you can take your vehicle to the dealer for a new battery, it’s an easy enough task to do at home, as long as you follow some basic ground rules.

When disconnecting the battery, take the black, or negative, cable off first, then the red, or positive, cable. Unclamp the battery, then use both hands to lift it out of the car. When connecting the new battery, connect the red cable first, then the black one.

What can you do with the money you saved by tackling several home repair and maintenance projects on your own? One option is to open a savings account and let the money you’ve saved earn interest. Cool and clever secret hiding places to keep your valuables safe

It happens that people become victims of burglary. How to keep your valuables safe? Where to hide your most precious items so that they are not exposed to potential theft? A home can be full of hiding places and we will show you some clever secret hiding places which may be useful and give you some ideas.

DIY secret hiding places – original ideas

Some people say that it takes an average burglar maximum of 15 minutes to rob your home. You may have a security system, you may even have a home safe and yet, there is no guarantee that you will keep your cash, jewelry and important documents. Here creativity comes to aid. When you want to really hide something it should be hidden in an unexpected way or place. Here you will find some original DIY secret hiding places and although some of them may seem like fun, they actually work. The statistics show that master bedroom and living room are the first rooms that burglars scour for jewelry and cash. People tend to install their home safes in these rooms and experienced thieves know it. But you can use the kitchen, bathroom, mudroom, pantry or laundry room to create your hiding place and there are some really creative family photo wall ideas which you can use to arrange it.

Cool and clever secret hiding places

You know that something is hidden when it is placed on an obvious place. Cool and clever secret hiding places could be anything from a small storage safe disguised as a book, hidden in a pile of other books or desk papers. When you want to hide some cash, you can drill a hole in one of the interior doors and store small items. Pantry items are another good idea. Sea salt, flour, sugar – use the packs to hide your valuables. Household, kitchen and cleaning products are also a good spot, especially when stacked among real products.

How to Protect Cash From Fire (7 Easy Methods) – Survival Freedom

A lot of people choose to keep cash in their homes for many reasons. While you may argue that you feel the safest when your cash is closest to you, keeping your cash at home is prone to a lot of problems, one of them being accidental fires. So how do you protect your cash from fire?

There are many cool solutions and hacks to protecting the cash you keep with you at home from fire. You can get a safe, keep it in your car, get a fireproof bag, use the freezer, keep it in the toilet tank, bury it, or, of course, keep it in person.

We will discuss each of these methods in this article. We will also look at some alternative and indirect ways of protecting your cash from fire. Let us start by looking at 6 different ways you can protect the cash you keep at home from fire:

1. Get a Safe

The most popular solution to protecting your cash from fire is to invest in a nice safe. You can also use the safe to store your documents and other valuables. Most home safes are fire and waterproof, so if the worst should happen, you will be able to recover all of your cash and documents.

If you look in the market, you will find plenty of fireproof home safes of all shapes and sizes. I actually prefer to use a locking box since they are much easier to move around when necessary. Here is the one that I recommend, found on Amazon.

2. Keep It in the Freezer

A freezer is a popular place for storing cash, and it will protect your money from fires. You are better off storing your money in some sort of chest freezer away from the kitchen (since most fires start at the kitchen). Also, this method isn’t robbery-proof since using the freezer to hide one’s valuables is a very common trick. Most robbers will know just where to look.

3. Keep the Cash in Your Car

This will make perfect sense to some of you. But to those who live and drive in sketchier neighborhoods, this won’t come off as the brightest idea. For most safe and quiet suburban households, the simplest and the surest way to protect your cash from fire is to simply keep it in your car. This solution, however, is only effective so long as you keep your car parked outdoors.

If you’re worried about your car getting stolen, here’s a neat little mathematical illustration that could change your mind:

According to government data, in 2017, there was one house fire every 88 seconds, one general structure fire every 63 seconds, and one outdoor fire every 51 seconds. That roughly amounts to 2 fires every minute. In contrast, there was one car stolen every 40 seconds. That’s 1.5 cars per minute.

This illustrates that it is more likely that you will lose your money in a fire than lose it because your car gets stolen.

4. Get a Fireproof Bag

This is a cheap and simple alternative to a fireproof safe. You can store all of your cash and other valuables in a fireproof bag so that should the worst happen, you can run out and save yourself first and then simply recover the bag and its contents later. Here is the one that I recommend. It’s by far the best one I’ve ever seen.

5. Keep It in the Toilet Tank

We’re slowly getting to the more outlandish solutions. But this is a very effective solution, nonetheless. Toilet tanks don’t get damaged in a fire. So if you put your cash in a sealable plastic bag and then put the bag in the toilet tank, you can rest assured that your cash will remain safe.

This can be an everyday storage solution since your toilet tank is well within your reach and is easily accessible.

6. Keep It on Your Person

This is, of course, a no-brainer. But this method is not effective if you have a lot of cash you need to protect. Keeping small amounts of cash in your person ensures that it survives the fire when you run out to protect your life.

7. Bury the Money

Now, this may seem like a bit of an extreme thing to do. But the surest way to prevent your cash from burning from an accidental fire is to keep it buried underground. Of course, you can’t just bury it in the earth. Get a nice plastic bag with a good seal and put your money in it. Then bury the plastic bag on the ground.

Of course, this method would only be practical if you’re looking to save some money for later. You wouldn’t want to go digging every time you need some cash.

Do You Need to Worry About Fire?

If you think it is highly unlikely that you will ever experience a fire at your place, you are most likely correct. But that’s exactly how accidents work. They are very rare, so it is easy to believe they’re not real. But when they happen, they are very real.

It is reported that more than half of America has no place on how they will deal with a disaster. But in 2017 alone, there were 1,319,500 reported cases of fires in the United States. Let that sink in.

It is better to be safe than sorry. If you have a good amount of cash that you intend to keep with you in your house, you must take the necessary precautions to protect this cash in case there is an accidental fire. Perhaps this cash could serve as your backup after the fire. We shared several effective solutions in this article.

Banks, Digital Currencies & Gold

We simply could not do an article on protecting cash without mentioning banks. If you have some personal reason why you don’t want to deposit your cash in a bank, that is up to you. But this should be the preferred solution for most people as it is also the most effective.

Banks have always been a great place to store your money and other valuables. They have a better safety system than most homes, and even if the worst should happen, you will most likely be compensated for it.

Most banks even offer interests for the cash you deposit in them. Not only will you be protecting your cash, but you will also actually be adding to it over time.

Digital currencies are the future. The whole world is accelerating towards achieving a cashless economy. Most transactions today can already be done digitally. So storing your money in a digital format would not only be an effective way to protect it from accidents like fire, but it would also be a much more convenient option for you as you can have it in your person at all times in the form of a card or online account.

Finally, investing in gold is another indirect but effective way of protecting your cash from fire. You can always sell the gold back to receive cash. This is a very effective solution, especially if you’re looking to store cash for a long time. Cash will eventually lose value due to inflation. But this won’t happen with gold.

Closing Thoughts

While you should always try and keep your money in the bank, there are plenty of ways you can keep your cash safe in your own home. In this article, we looked at six practical ways you can protect your cash from fire. Some of the solutions may have seemed like they were a bit out there, but they are effective nonetheless. We hope you found them helpful.

90,000 Eligible for a pill. How is the coronavirus changing women’s access to abortion?
  • Anastasia Soroka
  • BBC

The coronavirus epidemic is changing healthcare delivery models around the world. This includes abortions. In some countries, abortion during the lockdown was declared not an urgent medical procedure, banning clinics from carrying it out and effectively cutting off women’s access to legal and safe methods of abortion. In other countries, governments that usually advocate abortion restrictions have, by contrast, accommodated women and their rights activists by temporarily making them easier to access.

One of the consequences of the lockdown was the growing popularity of “teleabortion” – a procedure that does not require a woman to visit the clinic. Like other types of telemedicine, it is a way to consult a doctor and get medical help – over the phone or online – without going to a clinic or putting yourself at risk of infection. Doctors and human rights activists fighting for women’s right to abortion insist that it is one of the safest methods of abortion available to even the most vulnerable groups of the population.

How does “abortion over the phone” work, how safe are they, and can they appear in Russia?

23-year-old Isa from Portugal learned that she was pregnant just in the midst of a pandemic. It was the beginning of spring, the countries of Europe, one after another, introduced strict quarantine measures to contain the spread of the virus. Isa was stuck in Germany, in a small town on the border with the Netherlands, due to border closures.

Upon learning about the pregnancy, Isa was frightened. She knew that she could not leave the child. Her partner is also stuck in another country – in France. A family in Portugal would not support her.

The airline for which she worked as a flight attendant stopped operating flights due to quarantine, leaving employees at the base rate and depriving them of allowances for flights. Even if flights resumed, the pregnant girl would still not be allowed to service flights . In addition, due to the losses that the coronavirus inflicted on the aviation industry, the company expected massive redundancies, under which, Isa is sure, it will also fall.

With the remaining money, Ise barely managed to find a room in a strange city. “If I had not had an abortion, I would most likely have to give the child up for adoption,” the girl says.

Isa is one of the millions of women around the world who faced this choice during the coronavirus pandemic. And the pandemic did not simplify this choice. According to the charity organization Marie Stopes International, 9.5 million girls and women were left without access to safe abortion procedures in the world during quarantine.

According to the UN Population Fund, the employment of medical workers in the fight against the epidemic, the closure of clinics, the ban or restrictions on movement, as well as the fears of women themselves in connection with the epidemic and the fear of visiting medical facilities in order not to get infected, have violated their access to reproductive health . ..

In many countries, with the beginning of quarantine, abortion, contrary to WHO recommendations, was declared not an urgent medical procedure, which means that it is not carried out in clinics whose resources are involved in the fight against Covid-19.

Having decided to have an abortion, Isa first wanted to fly home to Portugal to go through this procedure with her partner there – but the borders were closed. Despite the fact that abortions continued to be carried out in German hospitals, Isa was afraid to go to a German doctor: she did not know the language and did not want to face misunderstanding and condemnation. She also could not go to a private clinic – due to the financial situation in which she found herself in connection with the coronavirus. “I was alone, I didn’t speak German and I was embarrassed by this whole situation,” she says.

While exploring the options available to her, Isa stumbled upon Women On Web, which helps women have safe medical abortions without consulting a physician in person at home. Against the background of quarantine, the activities of such organizations are gaining more and more popularity.

As such organizations reduce the burden on health facilities, the ministries of health in many countries – for example, Britain, Ireland and Moldova – are willing to meet them in a health system crisis, simplifying legislation and temporarily lifting restrictions related to abortion. In other countries, such as Poland or the United States, telemedicine, which even at normal times makes it possible to circumvent strict legal prohibitions on abortion, during a pandemic is practically the only way to have a safe abortion.

Isa wrote on Women On Web. In response, she received a letter describing all the other safe abortion options available to her in Germany. The organization insists that women with access to more conventional abortion methods should only seek telemedicine as a last resort. When Isa explained her situation, which does not allow her to use any of the other methods, she was sent a questionnaire of 25 questions about her state of health – medical abortion is not safe for everyone.

All correspondence with the Women On Web doctors lasted three days, she recalls. For another two weeks Isa was waiting for the pills sent to her by mail. The package arrived by mid-March.

“Try not to get pregnant”

Women On Web provides services in 22 languages, including Russian, in dozens of countries around the world.”Teleaborts” is just one of the areas of their activity. They also help women gain access to emergency contraception, advise on other abortion methods, and conduct community campaigns.

“Telemedicine allows us to help the women who need it the most,” says Hazal Atay, Women On Web Coordinator.

The problem with women’s access to safe abortion largely depends on her social status, human rights activists say. “For example, being able to travel or knowing a language are all socio-economic factors,” explains Atay.

In countries where abortion is legal, abortion often remains inaccessible to those who cannot afford it. For example, a woman in a village may not have the money to go to a clinic in the nearest town, where a doctor would prescribe the necessary medications for her; she may have no one to leave her children with, or she cannot take time off from work for this. Conversely, even in countries where abortion is illegal, women can find a way to terminate a pregnancy if they have the means to do so.

This is exactly what happened in Poland before the coronavirus: many women who wanted to have an abortion, if they had money, went to neighboring Germany for it.

“But when the borders closed, it also hurt the rich,” explains Atay. During the coronavirus epidemic, the number of requests to Women On Web has increased significantly.

Hazal Atay compares the coronavirus situation in many countries with the Zika virus epidemic in Latin America in 2015-2016. In an infected pregnant woman, the Zika virus could cause fetal malformations – thousands of children were born with microcephaly and irreversible neurological disorders that affect quality of life.

Abortion was (and still is) illegal in most of the region. For example, in Venezuela, Brazil and Argentina, abortion at the request of a woman – unless pregnancy threatens her life – can lead to imprisonment. In some countries (notably El Salvador), even contraception is illegal. “Back then, all governments could do was tell women, ‘Try not to get pregnant,’” says Atay.

“This is a very similar situation. I do not think that Europe in terms of sexual and reproductive rights copes with the coronavirus better than Latin America coped with Zika, “the human rights activist is sure.In mid-April, a statement condemning the failure of European countries to ensure women’s access to safe abortion during a pandemic was signed by 100 human rights groups.

“You have to understand that abortions happen every day,” explains Laura Hurley from the international organization SAAF (Safe Abortion Action Fund). Her organization helps others find funding; their pool includes dozens of organizations to help women – in Eastern Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and South America.

According to Hurley, human rights defenders are deeply concerned about the fact that lack of access to safe abortion often pushes women not to continue their pregnancy, but to unsafe methods of termination. “People in desperate situations will find a way to terminate their pregnancies,” she says. “They will try to get these pills somewhere or go to someone who will perform some version of a surgical abortion. And this is what is really dangerous.”

According to human rights defenders, 47 thousand women around the world die every year from the consequences of unsafe abortion.”And these are only those who die. Many more women cause permanent harm to their health,” said Khazal Atay.

“Basically what we are doing is harm reduction,” she adds.

Two tablets

Rodica Commandant, PhD, Associate Professor of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the State University of Medicine and Pharmacology named after Nicolae Testemitanu and Director of the Educational Center for Reproductive Health (CIDSR) in Moldova, has been implementing the practice of medical abortion in the country since 2004 . ..

As in other post-Soviet countries, at the legislative level, the attitude towards abortion is very liberal here: abortion at the request of a woman is legal and available for up to 12 weeks, a woman herself can choose a doctor and a method of abortion. In addition, the country has prepared a legal framework for the launch of the abortion procedure through telemedicine.

The launch of the teleabortion program for women who cannot come to the clinic for this procedure has been planned for a long time by Dr. Komendant and her team, and the start coincided with the start of the quarantine imposed by the coronavirus.

“We [long] thought of this idea: to provide women who find it difficult to come to the clinic, this telemedicine service,” says the Commandant. “When the epidemic hit, all clinics were closed, none of the women could go anywhere, at home, and people were afraid to even approach hospitals, we were already ready to launch this project. We immediately realized that in this situation, the availability of abortion would be very difficult. ”

In three weeks from late March to mid-April, when the most stringent quarantine measures were introduced in Moldova, almost 60 women applied to CIDSR.“We have never had such an influx of patients. And even today, when the restrictions have already been lifted, women continue to turn to us,” says Komendant. The Moldovan Ministry of Health has publicly supported this program.

According to the Commandant, medical abortion, among other methods of termination of pregnancy, is “a lifesaving method, especially during the lockdown period.” “This is a method that can be delegated to women themselves, because they are able to understand how to take pills, how to take care of themselves,” the doctor said.

There are two drugs in the treatment: mifepristone and misoprostol. Together with them, the woman receives by mail a detailed step-by-step instruction on the sequence in which to take the drugs, and what to do if they do not work. In addition, she receives pain relievers and antiemetics and two highly sensitive pregnancy tests.

Numerous medical trials have shown that mifepristone without misoprostol provides an 80-90% guarantee that an abortion will go without complications.Misoprostol raises this guarantee to 98-99%.

This method, however, has a number of serious contraindications. For example, drugs should not be taken by women who have problems with blood clotting, who have had an ectopic pregnancy in the past, or who use an intrauterine device. All this is discussed at the stage of consultation with a doctor online or by phone.

In addition, this method is so far approved for use only in the first trimester – for a period of up to 12 weeks (although in some countries this period may be less at the standard level – 7 or 10 weeks).

Isa recalls that the experience with medical abortion was far from painless. In her case, the first pill, mifepristone, did not work, and three hours later, Isa took the second pill, misoprostol. “It hurt a lot. It was like the worst spasm imaginable. And it lasted 24 hours. But everything went away without complications,” she describes. She had to go through this painful day alone.

First a week later, and then three weeks later, Women On Web contacted her to find out how she was feeling and to double-check for complications. In case of complications, the girl would be helped to go to a real clinic – in many countries it is easier to get help after an abortion than to have the abortion itself.

Is it possible in Russia?

Director of the Russian Association for Family Planning Lyubov Erofeeva does not believe that “tele-aborts” are possible in Russia in the foreseeable future. “It is unlikely that this will work out any time soon. Although I think there would be a good chance to expand [access to contraception and medical abortion],” she says.

According to the law, non-governmental organizations in Russia do not have the right to provide services related to abortion. “In Russia, these are only commercial structures licensed to carry out this activity, and government agencies,” explains Erofeeva. In addition, only a gynecologist in a certified clinic can provide drugs for medical abortion in Russia.

“In the usual standard [state] antenatal clinic, I don’t see any perspective on that.It is unlikely that revolutionary changes will affect such an extent that the civil service will switch to this, “she said, noting that private clinics can still go for it – to prepare the appropriate equipment and train gynecologists in remote consulting.

At the same time, according to the law on telemedicine, which entered into force in Russia in January 2018, such technologies can only be used when consulting on the prevention, diagnosis and monitoring of the patient’s health status, as well as in order to make a decision on the need for face-to-face admission.Prescribing medication or drugs in this way is not permitted by law.

At the end of March, in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, Russian deputies, led by the Chairman of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin, introduced a new bill that would give doctors the right to remotely prescribe treatment and diagnose “in an emergency and (or) when there is a threat of the spread of the disease, posing a danger to others “. So far, the bill has passed the first reading.

The right to choose

In many countries, the coronavirus and the quarantine introduced in this regard have heated up disputes between supporters and opponents of abortion, including those related to the spread of telemedicine.

In the UK, in early spring, the government temporarily allowed women (with the exception of Northern Ireland residents) to have abortions at home for up to 10 weeks’ gestation and subject to consultation with a doctor by phone or online.

The conservative religious group Christian Concern contested this decision in the High Court of London. She insisted that by this decision, the government “usurped power” and put pregnant women in an unsafe position. Government officials insisted that they had sufficient proof of the safety of such a method.Christian Concern lost the lawsuit.

In France, the authorities allowed women to undergo medical abortions at home for a period of nine weeks instead of seven with a telephone consultation with a doctor – previously, during this period, drugs for abortion could only be taken in a clinic. According to Le Monde, French doctors continue to insist, based on evidence, that this period should be extended at the legislative level to 12 weeks. At the same time, opponents of abortion in the country also criticized the government’s decision.

In the Netherlands, a court in The Hague denied women the opportunity to carry out abortions during quarantine without a visit to the clinic.

The International Planned Parenthood Federation notes that many countries have taken advantage of the pandemic to control women’s access to abortion.

For example, opponents of abortion in eight states in the United States tried to use the coronavirus pandemic to prevent women from accessing legal abortion procedures.

Governors of Texas, Ohio, West Virginia, Tennessee, Iowa, Arkansas and Alabama have added abortion to the list of non-urgent procedures by banning clinics and doctors from providing abortion services and threatening them with “full force of law” in case of disobedience.Doctors have accused the state authorities of “exploiting” the pandemic. In Texas, human rights defenders challenged the authorities’ decision in court, but lost.

The Polish government has also tried to use the pandemic to tighten already stringent laws on women’s access to safe abortion. After violent protests, the bill was returned for revision.

Hazal Atay expects that temporary relaxation of access to abortion laws that some countries have adopted will be rolled back after the pandemic.

“I think that the first impulse of governments after the coronavirus will be to reverse these concessions,” she notes. “But we know that if the right is given, it is difficult to take it away. , and you once allowed it, then on what basis are you taking this [right] away? ”

“After all, restrictions of this kind are not medical, not scientific. They are political decisions,” she said. “[The problem] is that we do not trust women. There are still too many taboos around abortion. “

” I don’t think telemedicine abortion should be the only option [available to a woman]. Because that also deprives you of choice. Ideally, people should have a choice – whether they want to have a surgical abortion or a medical one, in the clinic or at home, “says Laura Hurley of SAAF.

Abortion – in itself, without legal restrictions – is a difficult decision for a woman, says Human rights activist She believes that the opportunity to consult a psychotherapist, see a doctor twice or take time to think should not be necessary circumstances for an abortion, but options available to a woman.

Isa is still going through what happened. Despite the economic situation in which she found herself, this choice was not easy for her. She says that going through it, she most lacked moral support.

In the future, the girl says, she wants to have children.

  • 90,000 Smartphone fingerprint scanner: additional security or vice versa?

Fingerprint scanners can now be found in almost all top smartphones. Manufacturers claim that biometric technology is not only convenient, but also very secure. Is it so?

Not really. For starters, these sensors are imperfect. Old-style capacitive scanners do not recognize wet fingerprints well, and in general they often do not work the first time. If your hands are sweaty in the summer or during sports, the phone may become stubborn. Scars, scratches and other defects also affect the recognition quality. In addition, many sensors do not distinguish between an impression and a real finger, and this is already a security threat.

Part of the problem is likely to be resolved when Qualcomm launches its new development on the market – an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner. You can’t take a snapshot, and wet fingers are not a hindrance to the new sensor. But there are other threats as well.

A smart bottle of whiskey and four trends that we felt at MWC 2015 and which are very encouraging for us:

    – Kaspersky Lab (@Kaspersky_ru) March 10, 2015

New technologies are vulnerable simply by virtue of their novelty – it is not enough just to build something innovative into the phone, you must also do it competently. Not everyone succeeds in this, and certainly not right away.In August 2015, a way was discovered to steal fingerprints – remotely and on an industrial scale.

Experts have found that HTC One Max and Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphones store images with user fingerprints in the general section of the file system as an unprotected file with the bmp extension, that is, as a regular picture. Any application that has access to files and the Internet on the phone can steal this picture. In addition, in many smartphones, the sensor itself is not sufficiently protected – a malicious program can read the image directly from it.

At the same time, the iPhone coped with this task much better than its competitors: Apple smartphones encrypt these files, so if a hacker gets an image, he cannot read it without a cryptographic key. Manufacturers have released patches, but there are no guarantees that new “holes” will not be found in the next flagship with the new OS.

By the way, about Google. Fingerprints on HTC Android smartphones, as it turned out, are available to almost everyone:

    – Kaspersky Lab (@Kaspersky_ru) August 11, 2015

To protect data, some vendors (for example, Huawei) use ARM TrustZone technology, which analyzes scanned fingerprints in a separate operating system running on a dedicated virtual processor that the main system does not have access to.As a result, third-party applications and developers cannot access critical information like fingerprint scans. Unfortunately, due to implementation specifics, this technology is also imperfect.

The assertion that a fingerprint is not a password and cannot be “peeped”, forgotten, or accidentally passed on to someone else does not work in practice. This year, the researchers also clearly showed that it is very easy to steal a fingerprint, and without coming into contact with the victim – it is enough to take a high-quality picture of her palm or even print a suitable photo from a magazine.By the way, this method is also suitable for faking the iris of the eye.

I need your face, fingerprint and iris

    – Kaspersky Lab (@Kaspersky_ru) October 28, 2015

A password that has got into the network can be changed in a couple of minutes, but stolen fingerprints cannot be changed in a lifetime. Therefore, you should not recklessly trust the loud advertising statements of manufacturers. In the meantime, for all users of smartphones equipped with fingerprint scanners, we recommend the following.

Smartphone fingerprint scanner: additional # security or vice versa?

    1. Despite the recommendations of the manufacturers, you should not use a biometric scanner for authorization in payment services and banking applications. This may not be safe. Now you have the phone – tomorrow the thief may have it. It will not be difficult for him to copy your fingerprints directly from the phone and buy himself something expensive for your money. It is much more difficult to get passwords, if, of course, you know how to use them correctly.

We turn out to be very predictable when we create graphic # keys for #Android:

    – Kaspersky Lab (@Kaspersky_ru) August 21, 2015

    1. Most often, the index and thumb are chosen for authorization. This is convenient, but wrong, since we primarily use them when working with a smartphone. Having received a “swiped” smartphone, a criminal will be able to make a fake fingerprint in a couple of hours – since there are plenty of instructions on the Web.Thumb and forefinger prints are likely to be found on the body of the device, and in fair condition. Therefore, it is worth focusing on the little finger and ring finger of the left hand for right-handers and the right hand for left-handers.
    2. A fingerprint scanner is not sufficient to protect your personal information. If you are concerned about privacy, consider using dedicated software. For example, Kaspersky Internet Security for Android has built-in Anti-Theft and Privacy Protection functions – with their help you can track a stolen phone, remotely erase all data from it, and hide your favorite contacts, call and message history from prying eyes …

How to hide personal data and contacts on the phone from prying eyes and scammers:

    – Kaspersky Lab (@Kaspersky_ru) December 4, 2015

In general, the fingerprint scanner is a good invention, and in smartphones it is more useful than harmful. But don’t think of it as the solution to all problems — use this technology wisely and don’t neglect other security measures.

90,000 Make your snowboarding safe for yourself and others

The world of snowboarding is divided into two sides – the first is very fun and exciting, and the second is the world of bloody snot on the slope, avalanches and rock discharges, titanium parts of the body.

At the beginning of your interesting and hopefully long journey, just follow the rules of behavior on the slope – in practice, these are generally accepted rules, which I commented a little.

The most important rule on the slope respect others

You are on the slope and there are people around you – if you do not know something, they will always tell you, do not hesitate to ask. However, on the mountain there are also those who like to skip the line on the lift and brake effectively 10 centimeters from you and your favorite snowboard (more often in you).If a person is a beginner (this is always visible), I personally endure, and explain that this rudeness is not accepted anyway. If it doesn’t help, I act according to the circumstances, usually the circumstances are in my favor.

Your snowboard safety is up to you.

    0. All equipment is adjusted and checked in the locker room – it is warmer and more comfortable there. The very first thing you do is check your snowboard bindings, position your phones so that they don’t break your ribs if dropped. If someone has long keys, also hide them away and close the pockets with zippers.

    1. You have come to the slope for the first time. If you cannot afford an instructor for financial reasons, then ask others where the training slope is located, on which you can learn yourself – they will show you. Do not confuse it with the paid slopes, where you can only train with a park instructor.

    2. On the way up the slope, stay away from the lifting gear and do not walk in the center of the tracks – only on the edge, both up and down.

Hold the snowboard firmly, so that it does not leave the slide on its own, without you. The weight and speed of a snowboard rolling down the mountain is enough to kill a person if it hits the neck or head, especially a child. Also, your expensive board can be stolen by unknown persons already below.

    3. You have come to the slope and are eager to fight. Take your time, put the board to the side (with the bindings down), do a simple warm-up, and look at the slope – where people repent, where they fasten their snowboards, how this slope ends (maybe with a springboard of 8 meters high)

4.If you have already watched the videos on teaching snowboard – there is an exercise called “scooter”, so, you do not need to do it . The fact is that in the movies it is made by people who already know how to ride or beginners under the supervision of an instructor who chooses a safe section of the slope.

You yourself do not choose such a site, but it will turn out as follows – with one foot you will ride a snowboard, with the second you will run along the slope faster and faster, then most likely you will fall. As a result, at best, you will stretch the ligaments in the knee and miss the season.

    5. The main cause of injuries and fractures is speeding (as in an accident), and therefore if you do not know how to brake, do not hesitate – sit on your ass, this is also braking. This should be done in the following cases:

    · Ahead is the danger – a man, a support, a stone, a ravine, etc.

    · You are extremely scared, you have already started to panic.

You do not control the process by at least 50% (and a bag of sand will travel on a snowboard to the bottom of the slope in a straight line, but he will never learn how to turn the board and brake – and this is your main occupation)

It is necessary to brake several meters before the obstacle, it is advisable not to hit the booty on the slope, but to sit down.At first, it is better to ride slowly – in the event of a fall, it will not hurt so much, and you definitely won’t break anything.

    6. Us slope is always wrong the one who knocked down the person below .

It is also not necessary to go on a “parallel” course with a person at a close distance depriving him and himself of the possibility of maneuvering (including falling or stopping)

    7. Do not sit on the slope unnecessarily (and in no case lie like a seal)

You can be run over by the same newbies

You interfere with those who know how to ride

A snowboard released by those who have not read this article can come to your head or back (as well as a snow scooter with a child and anything)

    · If you fall and it hurts so much that you cannot continue to ride – do not expect sympathy, unfasten your snowboard and crawl to the edge of the track, come to your senses there.

    · If everything is really bad and seems to have broken down, ask for help from others and call rescuers.

    8. Always look at the top of the slope before driving.

    9. Do not try to surprise anyone or anything – there are always people on the slope who skate much better than you, skate for your own pleasure, and not in public.

    10. If you hit someone, it is very, very bad, and you are guilty on all counts.Do not be lazy to apologize and stop if you need help than you can. Otherwise, you always run the risk of getting a well-delivered blow in the eye from that little boy’s angry father, or that ugly girl’s boyfriend.

    11. Protection for a snowboard, it does not guarantee 100% safety, but it reduces the risk of fractures and injuries, and of course it is worth wearing it.

    12. Never ride fast for the first time, even on a familiar slope, during your absence, springboards, stones and anything else could “grow” on it.

    13. Do not ride on slopes that are closed – the driver of the snowcat (such a tractor, the slope is equal) may not notice you and roll you into the snow in the literal sense of the word, sometimes they can build something on these slopes, etc.

    14. Learn to fall correctly – you can read and watch how it is done on the net.

    15. If you are lucky and for the first time you learn to snowboard in the mountains, and not on the hills near Moscow, find an instructor, at least for a couple of times. He will show you where to practice safely and where to try to move out.

    16. Try not to drink alcohol while riding, at least in the first 10 years, then figure it out for yourself. It’s better to have a drink after- at the bar

    17. When you can already do everything on the pistes, be careful when skiing off-piste – this is a completely different topic, it requires an investment in additional equipment and many years of experience. If you want to live a long and happy life, do not ride without local guides in dangerous areas.

The mountains are full of places where one mistake in orientation or one accidental fall will lead to injuries incompatible with life. Such skiing has nothing to do with freestyle in the park or beautiful “cut” turns.

Do not skimp on your protection and equipment – treatment is more expensive.

Almost 80% of snowboarders and skiers who died in the mountains saved 1500r-2500r. for their family and friends on a local guide or instructor, 10% on protection, 5% on avalanche equipment and navigation and communication aids, 4% were drunk, and only 1% were really unlucky.

We are sure you will make the right decision regarding the purchase of protection and if you follow even half of the recommendations that you have read, snowboarding will bring only positive impressions year after year.
