Seriously talking about Chinese cuisine in America and San Francisco in particular is like talking about foie gras in Paris or borscht in Odessa.
China is everywhere here. “Made in China” – these words accompany almost all global brands from the shores of the Pacific Ocean to old Europe and the Siberian hinterland in Russia.
There are more Chinese than Native Americans in some areas of San Francisco.For many decades, they have been in the restaurant business, which requires a lot of love, hard work and everyday eye. Well, something, but the Chinese have plenty of love and hard work. It was they who made America love their cuisine. Moreover: they are not too concerned about her “purity”, as, for example, the Japanese are concerned. One copy goes to the kitchen, and in the other the waiter marks the brought dishes. Simple and tasteful. And fast. You can try 7-8 dishes and spend an hour, no more.
I must say that almost all Chinese restaurants in the city, as a rule, have dishes from different regions of China, for example, there is Beijing cuisine, Yangzhou, spicy Sichuan cuisine, in which chefs use red pepper, star anise, coriander greens, garlic and bean curd. – tofu.Perhaps the most popular is the Shanghai one with its many seafood and sweet and sour sauces. The Kwangtung cuisine is also very diverse, the delicacies of which are dishes from snakes and poultry.
So, we came to “May Flower” with a company of 5 people (four adults and a small child). Actually, we were invited to a tasting of the so-called “dumpling” Chinese dumplings. At 11 o’clock we were the only visitors. We were immediately given a kettle of chamomile tea, and we began to study the menu.The “study” ended very quickly: my friends just put a checkmark in front of their favorite dishes – and that’s it. And then the waiter began to “throw” dishes on the table, one after the other and with tremendous speed. Vegetables, sauces, seaweed, fried ribs – it was delicious and even somewhat recognizable, but when chicken paws appeared in a bowl of bamboo in front of me, as if slightly stewed in a sauce of some amber color, from under which there was relief real, like living, chicken claws peeped out, I was dumbfounded.I knew that the Chinese cook everything that flies, crawls, walks on the ground, but what can be eaten by a chicken paw? Can. And even very tasty. Chinese dumplings could be ordered with many fillings and we chose fish. They are served in the same bamboo bowls, which looks rather exotic.
In the center of San Francisco there is the famous Chinatown, where, in addition to souvenirs and typical Chinese exotics, of course, there are many cafes and restaurants, and everyone comes there: tourists, the Chinese themselves, and just the curious.For example, one such establishment is called Washington Bakery & Restaurant. Here you can have breakfast, lunch, order a cake and any sweets and convenience foods, and even watch how Chinese noodles are made and dim sum is molded. The menu is tailored to the needs of the unpretentious visitor, but, nevertheless, with a full set of famous Chinese specialties. Categories look something like this: Curries, Soups, Sandwiches, Snacks, Desserts, Rice and Spaghetti, Noodles and Pasta, Dim Sum, Vegetables, Rice Dishes, Porridge (chicken, pork, liver, shrimp, etc.)etc.). The most “fly away” I had to watch in another Chinese “buffet”, where the service is like a buffet. This is Moonstar restaurant.The title does not need translation. This pleasure costs $ 30 per person and I will say right away: it is unlikely that one person for this amount is able to try everything here.
You walk in and you see a huge hall with long rows of tables. By the way, on Saturday and Sunday it is better to book places in advance, otherwise you will have to stand in a long queue of those wishing to enjoy oriental cuisine. The restaurant first opened in 1991, is located in Daily City near the ocean and is considered the best Chinese restaurant.The sections look like this: appetizers, tapas, salads, sushi, cold and hot seafood dishes, noodle bar, wok station, grilled dishes, fruits and desserts. The people, in any case, on Saturday are so dark that they are amazed. Children run and shout, clowns walk, the lottery winners are broadcast on the radio, which you can buy right there and win some kind of toy, music is playing, a birthday is being celebrated somewhere or something else. Noise and din. The meaning is this: a meeting of friends, a family dinner, a child’s birthday, just a snack – eat quickly and leave.And make way for others. Everything here has to be done quickly, it’s just that the atmosphere itself and the rhythm of the establishment make you rush. Comfort, of course, is zero. And long tables, on which, willy-nilly, a kind of student disorder immediately turns out to be, do not dispose to intimate and long conversations. However, the restaurant even has a wedding service; the hall can easily accommodate about 500 guests and, in addition to a wedding, any event can be celebrated here. The company, of course, also deals with catering.
The kitchen is really excellent quality.It was impossible to find fault with any dish, even with desserts. For example, chocolate fondue with strawberries has invariably attracted not only children, but also adults. Apparently, everything here has long been adjusted and debugged. The chef’s team works perfectly, not a single second was there such a situation that something was missing. But you won’t sit here for more than two hours – your head will go dizzy.
So, the culinary “made in China” works quite well and everyone likes it.
