A’ Design Award and Competition

The primary aim of the award is to create publicity, PR push and advertisement opportunities for design award winners while supporting the global design culture, creating incentives for entrants to come up with superior designs for a better future. A’ Design Awards is a premier annual juried design competition that honors the best designers, architects, engineers, design studios, brands and design oriented companies worldwide to provide them publicity, fame and recognition.

A’ Design Award and Competitions are organized and awarded annually and internationally in a wide range of categories.

Every year, projects that focus on innovation, technology, design and creativity are awarded with the A’ Award. While realized projects find opportunities to get published, reach new markets and meet a wide range of buyers for their existing products, the organization also helps the creative minds and startups to meet with the business people to realize their product ideas.

The A’ Design Award and Competition has a very well developed methodology for choosing the best designs using rigorous evaluative criteria, blind judging processes, score normalization, cross matching and more, to reward only the best designers and firms that truly deserve special recognition. The Jury of the A’ Design award is composed of Academics, Professionals, Enterprise and Focus Group members and follow strict guidelines to provide a fair and ethical evaluation.

The A’ Design Award & Competition logo, awarded by international experts, is trusted worldwide and denotes solidly proven design quality. Companies and design studios use their A’ Design Award victory as a visible symbol in their communication. For potential clients, the A’ Design Award winner logo is a guideline for finding the best designs and creative services within the marketplace. Learn about the benefits here.

Participating in the A’ Design Award & Competition demonstrates the will to innovate, redesign, rethink and the courage to compare yourself to others in competition. The purpose of A’ Design Award is to highlight, advertise & advocate good design, and to provide its’ winners extensive and intensive publicity, fame and prestige.

A Designer’s Diary #1: things to avoid when trying to build a product | by Eugen Eşanu

Getting feedback for your idea is still a subject that not everybody gets it. You should not ask your customers “What do you want?”, “How do you feel about this feature?” or “What is missing?” because the answer will almost always be something in the area of “we want faster horses”. They don’t know because they are not building a product. They are not the guy behind the idea. They can tell you only what they feel but not what they need. You should know what is missing or what needs to be added. Try to take a step back, see where you are going, what is your vision and stick to it. If during a feedback session customers asked for a certain feature it does not mean you have to give it to them. Stop giving them faster horses, just build a great product.

We all have limited space in our apartment/house, and I don’t see you continually filling it with furniture until there is no space. The same thing refers to your product UI. Because then it becomes hard to get rid of it. Every time you add new elements, you get less and less space. So if you add a feature that is 5% of your product, you may lose 30% of space and that 30% of the area could have been your future feature that makes 20% of your product. I find myself falling into this trap a lot too. It is so easy to add a search bar or another button over there because it is too much white space. Saying no is an essential aspect of this, and it requires courage.

Product roadmaps are not like a bible that should be followed no matter what. But rather be like a guiding map. When you feel something is not working but you don’t want or can’t change your focus because of your roadmap, then it is a broken system. Let me tell you what could potentially happen:

    1. Your designers will start complaining behind your back that the PM is blind.
    2. Office politics will start increasing because, “hey the PM is in charge, I don’t care anymore”.
    3. Everything slows down.

It’s always embarrassing to talk with the designers on the client side and listen to these stories, meanwhile the CEO can’t see it for himself. A product roadmap should be like a to do list that can be changed at any moment in case a new priority appears. And not be rigid mechanism that doesn’t allow anything new to be implemented for the next 6 months.

It is a hard job to be a Product Manager because you have to juggle a lot of hats along the way. But some mistakes can be easily avoided to be a great PM. For example, if you have an idea that can improve the usability of the product but you say: “It is not what our customers are used to see. Let’s leave it as it was” then it’s a wrong way of viewing things. But if you say: “Hmm, that might work and be a good solution. Let’s test it” then it is a better way of looking at new ideas.

I agree, you can’t fit a proper job description under one shallow example, but hopefully you got the point. Closed minded people are a dead end for your product. They stick too much to the Roadmap, rather than being in the field and watching how customers interact with the product. A PM should be like a balance between the Dev, Designers, CEO, Customers and the company’s vision, rather than imposing her own beliefs into the product.

If you have a team of 1–3 designers and the rest are developers, you don’t need a project manager. For God’s sake why adding new layers of complexity when a senior designer can do the job efficiently too. But somehow this idea was sold to small companies. You expect things to go smoother, but then you realize it adds up mass to your product. This mass leads to slower decision making, office politics, and many other consequences.

Meanwhile, you should remove any complexities to move fast. As a quick general tip, when you hire a designer for a startup, it should be more of a generalist rather than a specialist. So this way any senior designer with a generalist mindset should be able to take the lead as a product manager and decide which features go into production or where is the product heading. We talked about this topic more in-depth with Anthony Armendariz, CEO of Funsize in a recent podcast episode. And the idea is simple, product managers only add layers of complexity in a small company, and a generalist designer can replace him easily.

If you are a small company and your people are thinking about their ass more than the success of your company, you have to fix the sink before it blows up. How much I would like to believe that most startups don’t have politics it wouldn’t be right. And it all comes from the top, from the founder of the company. The company will always be a reflection of the CEO and not the employees. In order to fix this, you can take a couple of steps. Get rid of these things:

    • Timelines that take months or even years
    • Toxic meetings
    • Roadmaps that predict the perfect future
    • Top-down hierarchy
    • Scalability debates
    • Adding endless “great” features
    • Doing incremental changes that shift the product vision

You don’t need tons of money or the best team in the world to build a great software product. You just need to get real about everything and stop wasting time on dumb stuff. When you are a startup or small company, you should do everything possible in order to avoid gaining mass when it comes to decision making and work environment. This will not only allow to gain competitive advantage but allow to take quick decisions on every level.

Top 3 Reasons to Keep a Visual Diary & Graphic Design Portfolio

Keeping some form of an inspiration source is part of being a designer. It may be a box filled with unique paper stocks and fancy gold foiling or a folder filled with clippings. So throughout our course, Shillington students are required to collect inspiration and keep a visual diary which you will use to eventually inspire your graphic design portfolio.

Simply put, a visual diary is a concrete way to archive inspirational reference material, critique designs that work (or perhaps don’t work), and help keep your design eye sharp. Throughout your career, your diary is a key resource to consistently hone your critical eye and broaden your design horizons. You’ll be glad that you have this as a resource when putting together your graphic design portfolio!

So, what’s inside this visual diary? Anything and everything to help inspire you during your design process—ideas, moodboards, inspiration clippings, critiques and dozens and dozens of thoughts.   Try to think into the future, what would your future self hope to have when putting together your graphic design portfolio?

If you’re still not convinced, here are our top three reasons to start creating your own visual diary:

    1. It makes you a better designer. Having the ability to critique and understand why designs are successful or unsuccessful helps us apply similar thinking to our own work. You’ll also develop a critiquing language helping you to advise fellow designers with design decisions.
    2. Keeps you up-to-date with industry. Looking at work that is currently happening and helps you avoid trend-driven design phases.
    3. Builds a library of aesthetics. Collects all your references in one place when you feel stuck with a brief. Plus, it’s rewarding to see all the theory we’re teaching you happen in real life. You’ll also get to use this as the building blocks to your graphic design portfolio!

    Happy journaling!

The World of Warcraft Diary – A designer’s insights into game development

When John Staats heard a news story that reminded him how difficult game development is, he thought it would be great if gaming enthusiasts knew what goes into creating an engaging multiplayer game. And then he remembered his extensive notes from his time on the design team of Blizzard’s wildly popular online role-playing game, World of Warcraft.

Over the next couple of years, Staats turned those notes into The World of Warcraft Diary, and he was gracious enough to spend time with us describing the project and why he selected Walsworth to manufacture the book.

Walsworth: What was your vision for the book, and who is the intended audience?

John Staats: Honestly, I had students in mind, and anybody with an artistic inclination who might not think of a career in game design because they aren’t familiar with what goes into projects like that. In the book, I share how there’s really no magic. It’s just a lot of hard work and is more attainable than people realize. So, I wanted to show how human the process is in hopes of inspiring people to consider the career field.

Since it’s essentially an educational book, I’d ideally like to see it used as a textbook in classrooms as much as a coffee-table book for gaming fans who want to know how World of Warcraft came together.

When you decided to share your experiences, how did you determine it should be a coffee-table book?

Staats: Well, I had a lot of images and screenshots showing how a game comes together during development. A lot of people think it would be fun working at a game company, but the fun doesn’t really happen until the last five percent of the process when the game is actually playable. Before that, it’s fairly ugly and full of snags that stop you from progressing in the game.

I thought it would be interesting to readers to see how the pieces come together incrementally, so I included about 130 images with descriptive captions to visually describe that progression. For instance, I show stuff that is invisible to a player. If your character is walking down some stairs in a crypt, you’re actually walking down a ramp that slices midway through the stairs. It’s a simplified geometry, and an image showing what a player is actually walking on is enlightening.

Another example is showing what’s going on when a player collides with something like a wall. The player is in a box like a dreidel, so if you walk into a wall, the game doesn’t have to look at the geometry of your arm or toes. As far as the game is concerned, it’s using the geometry of a simple box to provide visualization of the collision. I think there’s a lot of beauty and elegance in what’s going on behind the scenes.

Does it have a diary feel?

Staats: I wrote the book with non-technical people in mind. I explain basic things, like what a game engine is, and how animation works. So, when I mention those things in the chronological narrative, readers know what I’m talking about.

It’s based on notes I took each month during the four years I worked on the World of Warcraft design team, but it’s not a diary. It’s like the anatomy of a computer game company and gives you a comprehensive understanding of the product and the process.

How did you get into a career designing games?

Staats: Back in grade school, I would make homemade Dungeons and Dragons novels for my cousins. They would buy a game and would read it and see all the spoilers of the little adventure we were supposed to play. So I’d make up my own stories.

Then, when I discovered that id software had released rendering engines for free to the public, I was one of the hobbyists who was super enthusiastic about turning those old Dungeons and Dragons modules into 3d spaces in order to walk through them visually. I was so into it that after four and a half years of doing that for long hours, I inadvertently built a portfolio that was professional level quality. That led to the opportunity to work at Blizzard on the World of Warcraft project.

When you were working on the World of Warcraft project, did you have any idea it would be so popular?

Staats: Yes. Absolutely. Blizzard had a sterling reputation even before World of Warcraft. All of their games had become mega-hits. They resolve all their mistakes and self-publish, which are key parts of producing super-polished products that get better over time.

I didn’t even know what the project was before I moved to work for Blizzard. I just knew it was a great company to work for.

Could you tell us about the fundraising process for your project?

Staats: I used Kickstarter to fund the project. In fact, it broke a record as the highest fundraiser for a non-fiction book.

How did you attain such success?

Staats: Everybody says you fail on your first Kickstarter campaign, and my first attempt failed miserably. I supported my second attempt with lots of interviews, promotional campaigns, chat sessions and the like – anything I could do to get in front of the right audience.

The big difference was I had many advisers during my second attempt where I made the first attempt entirely on my own.

Where in the process did you choose Walsworth to manufacture your book?

Staats: I felt strongly that I wanted to produce the book in the United States, so I solicited the top ten domestic book manufacturers.

The reason I selected Walsworth is because the quotes were so much more detailed and organized. And Walsworth’s representative, David Sutch, took the time to understand my goals and expectations. It was a collaborative process. David isn’t a gamer and he wasn’t familiar with crowd funding, but he took the time to understand the audience and provided ideas along the way to make the project better.

In fact, it was Walsworth that helped me with ideas to provide a special edition for my Kickstarter backers, who were constantly asking for upgrades. That’s why we added things like book markers and gold foil. The biggest upgrade for the special edition is the spot UV on the images. The spot UV provides more dimension to the page, so I’m excited about that.

Walsworth extends its thanks to John for taking time to describe his project.

Pictures, drawings, prints for a personal diary

We are used to expressing our thoughts and dreams in words and sentences. We trust our diary with our joys and sorrows, share our innermost things with him and tell him about our plans. Some write in it every day, while others record only bright and memorable moments of life. What if you add a little visualization to the familiar texts and poems, quotes and funny stories? If, for example, you write in a diary about your hobbies and small passions, you can draw your favorite hobby or its paraphernalia: sports, handicrafts, travel, books. Instead of writing, “I love the sea” or “I love chocolate,” you can draw it! Believe me, when you return to your paper friend in a few years or even several decades, it will be much more pleasant for you to revise hundreds of pictures than to reread tens of thousands of words. The theme of drawings and pictures can be completely different, it all depends on you and your desires. Drawings for ld conditionally (we repeat, conditionally) can be divided into many headings and subsections, depending on the preferences, desires, tastes and even the mood of the lady of the diary.

    Themes for diary drawings

    • Travel
    • Hobby
    • Food, sweets
    • Drinks
    • Love
    • Gadgets
    • Social networks
    • Pets, animals
    • Cartoons
    • Unicorns
    • Wardrobe, fashion and style
    • Cosmetics
    • Seasons
    • Planets, celestial bodies

This list can be continued indefinitely, supplementing it with your drawings, fantasies, ideas. We offer several “delicious”, dynamic, cute, adorable and, as they say today, “ cute” drawings to decorate your diary.

As practice shows, it is much easier to make drawings by cells, however, you can use both line notebooks and standard A4 sheets.

If you are a fan or a fan of the animated series Gravity Falls , draw a funny donut Mabel on your diary page. She will bring you good luck.

In order to keep your diary, does not need to be able to draw and love. If you want to save time on drawings and concentrate, for example, on the presentation of the text, use the printouts for the ld for decoration.
You can print these templates on a color printer, cut out and paste in your diary, or make them black and white and paint yourself.

cute pictures, funny stickers, funny inscriptions or emoticons will help to decorate the pages of your diary. The beauty of printed pictures is that you can easily choose a beautiful font, choose a cool print and “settle” many new incredible characters on the pages of your innermost book.

A unicorn or owl can become a permanent resident / symbol / keeper of your diary. You can draw such a miracle with your own hands, or you can print a ready-made template on a printer.

    Formation of original pages

Select the optimal color gamut, the required number of sheets. The colors can be different – from light to dark tones; With the help of scissors, you can give various shapes to the pages, add them with delicate lace or round them; When choosing a title page for a diary, give preference to dense materials; A hole punch makes two holes on the left side, thread two rings through it to connect the pages. If there are no rings, then you can tie the pages with a beautiful ribbon; To create pages, purchase a ready-made notebook and create a creative design.

Ideas for designing a personal diary

So that the content does not get lost among the pages of an old and dull notebook, it’s time to think about the form.Consider Diary Ideas (Personal):

    • Record your thoughts with pens, pencils, markers and markers of different colors.
    • Supplementing handwritten text with pictures cut from glossy magazines.
    • Description of the events that took place using small drawings or comics of our own production.
    • Creation of thematic pages. For example, you can choose the topic “Plans for the fall”, “What do I want to learn this year?” and supplement them at any time.
    • Zoning sheets with different colors: mix shades and complement them with drawings. Against this background, the recordings will look especially interesting and expressive.
    • Manufacturing of pockets for storing things dear to the heart – notes, movie tickets and photographs.

Decoration of the first and subsequent sheets

On the first page, you can put a date that allows you to remember when you started keeping your diary, draw a picture, stick an applique or a clipping from a magazine. There are now many printouts for a personal diary that can be easily used as a decoration.

It is best to divide the rest of the diary sheets in such a way that you get one page for each day. On them, you can describe the events of the past day, make sketches and create coloring pages with your own hands.

Do not forget about the plans. For them, you also need to leave a few sheets. After their implementation, it is necessary to make a note about this in the diary by signing a topic, for example, “My achievements”.

Having prepared a delicious salad, you must not forget to leave a description of its preparation on the pages of your diary. In order not to remember for a long time about the ingredients included in it, it is enough to open the desired page and refresh your favorite recipe in your memory.

Going on vacation, you must definitely take the diary with you, and in order not to lose anything interesting from your memory, you need to make notes about your impressions in it every day. It is imperative to leave a few pages in order to stick on them hand-made crafts, for example, from colored paper or autumn leaves. If you store such things on the shelf, they are likely to get lost anyway. And glued to the pages of the diary, they will not go anywhere and will delight their owner with each viewing of the diary.

Free spaces on each page of the diary can be sealed with small homemade envelopes, in which it is good to store small photographs of loved ones. So every dear and beloved person will always be there. Even if not himself, but only his image, but still close by.

Keeping a personal diary does not take up much free time, but it is reassuring and allows you to keep enough information in one place. In addition, rereading his notes after a while, a person will receive great pleasure and joy. It’s so nice to remember the moments of fun and happiness.

90,000 10 events in Moscow that are worth your attention

    HPP-2

Already in early December, the House of Culture “GES-2” will open in the space of the former power plant on Bolotnaya Embankment.Despite the fact that it, together with the Tretyakov Gallery, the Pushkin Museum and Garage, is a member of the Museum Four, its founders, the V-A-C Foundation, in every possible way emphasize that this is not a museum, but a House of Culture, a generator of creativity and ideas … Its opening was postponed several times, but not so long ago the final date was announced – December 4.

In the first few years, there will be a cycle of projects consisting of five seasons – two a year. The leitmotif will be the Russian culture of recent decades and everything that influenced it.HPP-2 will open with the project of the artist Ragnar Kjartansson “Santa Barbara. How not to succumb to colonization?” – reshooting of the cult soap opera. Among other exhibitions – “I dismantle the gondola motors into parts”, the name of which is inspired by the song of the group “Mumiy Troll”, and “To Moscow! To Moscow! To Moscow!”

During the breaks between exhibitions, when some spaces will be closed for re-assembly, common areas will remain open – a library, a training center, creative workshops, a transforming hall, a cafe.Entrance to “GES-2” will be free, except for film screenings, concerts and performances. Even before the opening of the new space, it transformed the cultural landscape around – in front of the building they installed the composition “Big Clay No. 4” by Urs Fischer, which caused an ambiguous reaction, and next to the birch grove appeared “Space of Light” by Giuseppe Penone. The renewed building of the power plant with the iconic blue pipes, reconstructed according to the project of the famous architect Renzo Piano, also attracts attention.

History of Russian Design at the New Tretyakov Gallery

The Moscow Design Museum and the State Tretyakov Gallery open the “History of Russian Design. Selected Works” exhibition. This is the first large-scale exhibition exploring domestic design over the past century.Curators draw parallels between promising developments of Soviet and Russian designers and mass-produced products. In four sections of the exposition (avant-garde, art-deco and Stalinist empire, post-war design, modern design), objects will be presented that illustrate the innovative ideas of designers and mass-produced products. These are models, sketches, drawings, reconstructions of famous non-embodied projects, conceptual developments from the collections of the Moscow Design Museum, the Polytechnic Museum, the Museum of Art Textiles and Costume of the Russian State University.A.N. Kosygin, State Scientific Center of the Russian Federation FSUE “NAMI”, private collections.

Many exhibits will be shown for the first time. For example, in the first part, the minimalist kitchen for the house of Narkomfin, one of the most famous monuments of constructivism, is contrasted with simple wooden stools. A replica of the kitchen was created especially for the exhibition. In the post-war design section, viewers will see a 3D model of the Belka small car designed by V.A. Aryamov – he, as the magazine “Krokodil” wrote at that time, was tortured to death in the “bureaucratic wheel” and was never released.Instead of “Belka”, “Zaporozhets” appeared on the streets. In the last section, the curators show, without contrasting, the two main directions in modern Russian design – innovative projects and those that have already been successfully implemented.

90,000 The first volumes of the collected works of the researcher of the Far East Arseniev were published

The future 2022 can be called the Year of Arseniev – it will be 150 years since the birth of the author of “Dersu Uzala”, the great Russian traveler and scientist.

The other day in Vladivostok, the Rubezh publishing house published four volumes (in six books) of the first Complete Works of Vladimir Klavdievich Arseniev. Today these books can be seen at the non / fiction fair that opened in Moscow at Gostiny Dvor. Here I met with the general director and editor-in-chief of the Pacific publishing house “Rubezh” Alexander Vladimirovich Kolesov.

In the Far East, the name of Arseniev is surrounded by a real cult – in the kindest sense of the word.

Alexander Kolesov: This is true, but at the same time in Russia they know him much less than he deserves. The legacy of Vladimir Klavdievich has not been fully published until recently.

A huge layer of Arseniev’s scientific and practical research first entered the collection that you are publishing …

Alexander Kolesov: The general reader is practically unaware that Arseniev was also a researcher, a scientist of the broadest profile, in the first turn – an ethnographer.Unfortunately, the main ethnographic work of Vladimir Klavdievich, a two-volume monograph about the Udege “Country of Udekh”, was lost, materials for which he had been collecting for more than 25 years.

Vladimir Arseniev – researcher, traveler, ethnographer and photographer. Photo: From the archive of Dmitry Shevarov

I remember that a couple of years ago here, on non / fiction, you introduced me to your young colleague. The conversation was in progress, and I only remembered that his name was Nikita.

Alexander Kolesov: Yes, this is Nikita Sergeevich Vorobiev – the executive editor of the Complete Works of Arseniev, a graduate student of the Far Eastern Federal University. It was he who, over the past two years, has done a truly tremendous job of searching for previously unpublished texts and photographs of Arseniev, preparing notes and indexes to him.

The most interesting thing for me is to rummage through the index of names – every name mentioned by Arseniev takes on its fate here. Alas, often tragic …

Alexander Kolesov: Yes, many people close to Arseniev have been repressed. The very same Vladimir Klavdievich “saved” from arrest death from pneumonia, which he fell ill on the expedition.

Shortly before his death, on July 27, 1930, Arseniev wrote: “If it were not for these people close to me, if I were alone, I would have long gone far into the mountains, away from the city, from the crowd, from falsehood, lies, envy and anger, which have now permeated our entire life … “

In the first Complete Works of Vladimir Arseniev, for the first time, many of his scientific works, travel diaries and letters will be published

Today, statesmen do not know what else to come up with to lure people to the Far East.Or maybe you just need to give each school graduate a gift of Arseniev’s books, and then the bravest and most purposeful will rush to the Far East?

Alexander Kolesov: The Governor of the Primorsky Territory, Oleg Nikolaevich Kozhemyako, apparently thought so when he warmly supported our project and financed it. And today the Complete Works of Arsenyev is in all municipal and primarily in school, university and rural libraries of the region.

What awaits us, readers, in the next five books of Arseniev’s collected works?

Alexander Kolesov: These will include the diaries and letters of Vladimir Klavdievich. The remaining volumes of the Complete Works will be published in the first half of 2022, on the eve of V.K. Arsenyev.

    P.S.

On December 10, Moscow will host the ceremony of presenting the All-Russian Prize “Far East” to them. VC. Arsenyev.
