Thanks Dr Rocky for the wisdom teeth removal surgery. The whole process was fast and enjoyable. No pain at all, and the background music was nice! Has recommended him and the clinic to my friend. I will definitely come back for other dental treatment in the future!

Here’s another one from Richard Cheah, considered a local guide in Google:

Staff and dentists are all very friendly. Both the dentist that handled my oral hygiene carefully explained my situation so that i can be well informed before making a sound decision. They do not rush me into making any rash decision that may caused me to regret later.

Overall, with my tooth extracted, i do not feel any pain at all. I got no hesitation to recommend Casa Dental to anyone trying to choose a good dental clinic.

Looking for a trustworthy dentist in Singapore? Read this.

Whether you need Invisalign to straighten your teeth, teeth whitening or just teeth cleaning, you want to find a good dentist in Singapore that you trust and feel comfortable with. Like many people, I had one bad (read: massive rip-off) experience by a dentist in Singapore when I first arrived. I’ve also heard ‘on the grapevine’ that many dentists have a quota to meet per patient, so I was totally put off going for ages.  Not an ideal strategy when it comes to dental health, I’ll admit!

So, what’s my checklist for a potential new dentist? They need to be amalgam-free, and offer individual care and attention, with state-of-the-art equipment. And,  another thing – they need to take the time to really explain things and not be rushing off to their next patient. Basically, I’ve been looking for a dentist in Singapore I can trust.

Open wide- the philosophy at Aesthete is to create and maintain beautiful smiles

7 reasons to visit Aesthete Smilestudio

I’m happy to report that I’ve finally found a great dentist in Singapore who meets all my criteria: Aesthete Smilestudio, right in the heart of Raffles Place. I actually enjoyed my appointment with them (I know, who can ever say that about visiting a dentist?), and here’s why:

#1 They’re more than a dentist.

They’re kind of like a spa, too.

They combine the comfort and safety of a traditional clinic with the relaxing atmosphere of a modern contemporary spa. Subdued lighting and a fish tank in the waiting room, soft music and absolutely no flouridey-smell help create a beautifully calm environment. The team was friendly and attentive, and happy to answer all my questions.

#2 They want to change the way you feel about visiting the dentist.

They believe each visit should heighten your sense of sight, sound, smell, touch and taste. (Totally unlike the usual pain and anguish I’d expect from a dentist!) When I was filling in the obligatory new patient forms, I was asked which flavoured water I’d like for the cleaning (from a list of 23, I chose green apple) and which flavour I’d like for my fluoride treatment (orange, from a choice of eight).

You can personalise your experience with a choice of flavour for cleaning water and fluoride, I figured fruit was the way to go!

#3 They offer treatment and cosmetic dentistry in one place.

Aesthete Smilestudio’s aim is to create and maintain beautiful smiles, offering both dental treatments and cosmetic dentistry. I was just in for a check up, which included a full oral examination then cleaning, scaling and polishing (with the yummy customised flavoured water and fluoride treatment), but Aesthete does all the dental treatments you’d expect. This includes everything from implants, crowns, root canals, gum contouring and wisdom tooth surgery to Invisalign and other straightening solutions, and teeth whitening.

The clinic’s Aesthete Spa Whitening System is particularly popular; done in the comfort of the clinic’s Dentalspa room, the process is quick, efficient and comfortable. In fact, the special teeth-whitening formula from the US has proven to brighten teeth in just 30 minutes!

Check out Aesthete Smilestudio’s full list of treatments here.

#4 They’ve got some seriously impressive digital equipment.

Their x-ray machine is really quick (only 11 seconds!) and emits less radiation than you’d be exposed to flying from Singapore to NYC. These images are then available instantly in the examination room for you and the dentist to talk through together. They combine these with photos of your mouth taken using an intra-oral camera (once you get over seeing an enlarged version of the inside of your mouth on screen, it’s completely fascinating). Then they switch to a 3D-modelling programme, creating a model of your teeth from all sorts of angles. All of this info is then recorded in your digital file ready for your next visit.

I could see what the dentist could see, and he explained it all so well. (Have I just been unlucky with seriously-rushed-too-busy-to-chat dentists before?)

#5 They use a very snazzy air-polisher for teeth cleaning.

It’s called Prophy Max and it’s not like the old circular ‘car wash’ type cleaners (which actually scratch your teeth). It’s a frequency-controlled digital scaler, powered by air and water, which blasts salt to clean your teeth, removing stains from all surfaces of your tooth without stripping the healthy bits. Yes, you can taste the salt, but it feels sooo much better than the old way!

#6 They have clients, not patients.

‘You’re not sick, you’re at the dentist’, Dr. Thean reminded me. He encouraged me to make an excellent maintenance programme a way of life so that I don’t end up needing more invasive (and costly) treatments later on. He suggested x-rays once every two years (or once a year for a high-risk patient) and visits for scaling, polishing and fluoride every four to six months, but this varies depending on your lifestyle. For example, a heavy drinker and smoker would likely need to visit every two months to keep things fresh. (Yes, that’s going to add up in the cost department!)

#7 They don’t try and sell you treatments that you don’t need.

Dr Thean told me what was right with my teeth and also what could potentially cause problems later on. But that was it. No tutting about potential procedures – something that I’ve certainly experienced at other dental clinics.  No rambling pretence to try and sell me something crazily expensive. Being in a spa environment, I was absolutely waiting for the whole package thing to rear it’s ugly head. But nothing of the sort.

My next appointment is in the diary- finally, I’ve found my Singapore Dentist!

The bottom line

Whether you’re looking to straighten your teeth with Invisalign, teeth whitening or get a full mouth makeover, Aesthete Smilestudio can do it all.

They’ve found a new client, and I’m raving about them!

I can honestly say that a trip to Aesthete was an enjoyable experience. I left with sparkling clean teeth, a thorough understanding of my oral health and a firm resolution to be back. See you in six months, Aesthete Team.

[AMA] I am a Dentist working in Singapore. Ask me Anything (Part 2)! : singapore

Amazing response and all great questions from SG redditors. Thank you. I think I was able to answer most of the questions but I think i’m gonna call it a day! For those who i didn’t respond to, most likely is because your question was already answered either in this AMA or the previous AMA, so please check it out!

Do share these AMA with your friends and family i think it would be quite educational.

If there is a demand, and if i’m not too busy with setting up my new clinic, I might do an AMA Part 3 some day.

Oh and I URGE other professional out there to do similar AMAs for the benefit of the community.

It’s been fun! Take care

Hi all,

3 months ago I posted an AMA over here at r/singapore as a public service for people to ask questions they would normally be too shy or embarrassed to ask their own dentist. And the response was quite overwhelming in a really good way. Link over here

Well, now i’m setting up my own clinic and understanding all these hidden concerns and queries would help me care for my own patients.

So I now invite the always inquisitive SG redditors to challenge my knowledge one more time, hopefully I could help raise public awareness of good dental health.

Disclamer: As with before, this is NOT for self promotion. I intentionally created this username to hide my identity. Please do not ask for my clinic name or location.

Rules: As with before, I cannot and will not give specific or personal dental advice or recommendations. Please direct those questions to your own dentist

Please do not bad-mouth professionals in this forum. If you have to you must NOT mention the name of the clinic or the dentist.

Also it would be a good idea to check out my PREVIOUS AMA right here as your question might have already been answered already.

So here we go! Ask me Anything 🙂

Our team at is committed to being a one-stop avenue to connect local businesses and consumers. We hope that our research efforts can help you save time and money by finding you the best deals without having to search around the vast world-wide-web.

Also, 56 per cent of them spent less than two minutes a day brushing their teeth and 18 per cent did not brush their teeth twice a day.

If these figures don’t sound alarming, you may be surprised to learn that poor oral health is actually linked to heart disease, cancer and diabetes.

In this post, we’ve gathered all the necessary details and testimonials to derive a list of the 11 best dentist in Singapore to improve your oral health.

Amoy Street Dental was formed with the hope of providing an outstanding dental service to the community based on honesty and responsibility. Situated in a classic shophouse on Amoy Street, we are a short walk from Tanjong Pagar (green line) and Telok Ayer (blue line) MRT stations.

The clinic prides itself in its prescriptive dentistry services, which revolve around the belief that prevention is better than cure. Having a half yearly dental check-up is a simple step to ensure the health of your teeth and gums. The following are some of the ways they can prevent dental disease: fissure sealants, scaling and polishing, oral hygiene instruction and x-rays to detect gum diseases.

The prices of their preventive treatment services are as follows: examination / consultation – short ($32.10-48.15), scaling & polishing ($96.30-160.50), fissure sealant ($42.80), x-ray – panoramic ($96.30), and x-ray – peri-apical ($32.10).

One of many wonders of living as an expat in Singapore is just how colourful and bright a city it is. The streets are dotted with boldly coloured shophouses and lush, green foliage pops up in the unlikeliest of places.

Even the expressways leading from the airport to the city itself are adorned with bright pink bougainvillea. Colours seem to zing all around you in a way that they don’t back home, wherever that home is for you.

In fact, it’s a city where everything just seems a little brighter than normal, including people’s smiles. Oh, wait a minute, that’s because they are a little brighter.

With one dentist to every 2,386 people in Singapore (according to the Ministry of Health’s 2018 statistics, which recorded 2,293 registered dentists practicing from 496 dental clinics island wide) it’s fair to deduce that a lot of pearly whites are being buffed and polished every day. No wonder everyone’s smiles look bright.

With so much choice available, how do you know where to start the next time you need to book an appointment in the dental chair?

Read the following article to know everything there is about choosing the best dentist in Singapore. This guide covers types of dentists, dental treatments, pricing, insurance, our top tips, and recommendations on visiting the dentist.

Why Singapore

Aside from there being an abundance of clinics to choose from, dentistry in Singapore also comes with a reputation for excellent quality and good service with aftercare.

Locally-trained dentists are highly qualified, with completion of a four-year course at the National University of Singapore Faculty of Dentistry being the minimum requirement for registration as a general practitioner with the Singapore Dental Council. Becoming a specialist requires a further three-year focused course that can only be taken after at least two years of practice following initial registration.

Foreign-trained dentists are required to have graduated from one of a limited number of approved universities globally, and to have practiced under supervision for a minimum of two years before being allowed to progress to full registration and independent practice within Singapore.

Couple this extensive training with the use of English as the common teaching and practicing language, as well as generally high levels of medical hygiene and sanitation, and it is easy to understand why dentistry has a strong and positive reputation in Singapore.

In short, have no fear if you need to see a dentist in Singapore. Following a bit of guidance on how to choose the best dentist for you, you will be sure to find yourself in good hands.

Type of Dentists

Before you rush off to book your appointment, let’s first understand what types of dentists and dental clinics there are in Singapore.

Dentists: General Dental Practitioners vs. Specialists

All dentists have to undergo three years of general dentistry training to become a registered GDP (General Dental Practitioner) and practice in Singapore.

A Specialist Dentist is one who has subsequently undergone an additional three-year course with a focus in one of seven different fields:

  • Endodontics: root canal treatment
  • Oral & Maxillofacial surgery: disorders of the mouth, jaws, face and neck
  • Oral Medicine: prevention of dental disease
  • Orthodontics: braces
  • Paedodontics: child dentistry
  • Periodontics: gum disease treatment
  • Prosthodontics: crowns, bridges and dentures

Dental Clinics: Public vs. Private

Singapore’s public healthcare system, including dental services, runs in tandem to and in competition with a private one.

Generally speaking, dental healthcare in the public sector is cheaper than private, not least because Singaporeans enjoy a reduction in costs through healthcare schemes and subsidies offered by the government.

As an expat, however, these won’t apply to you (unless you have taken Permanent Resident status and pay into a Central Provident Fund) but even so, public clinics will still be a slightly cheaper option for you than private clinics.

However, while public clinics might be slightly cheaper, the wait times to see a dentist will be longer.  According to Singapore’s public data, in 2017 there were 1,748 private dentists vs. just 477 public ones.

The wait time for a referral from a GDP to a Specialist in the public sector may take 4-6 weeks, whereas most private clinics can give you an appointment within 1 or 2 days. That said, some public dental clinics have a loose arrangement to offer some walk-in slots every day, and dental emergencies such as excessive bleeding or extreme pain will always be seen.

Singapore’s National Healthcare Group delivers public healthcare through a system of hospitals and polyclinics.  Polyclinics are government-subsidised healthcare centres providing good quality medical and dental care. Five of these polyclinics also offer subsidised dental care.

If you visit a polyclinic and subsequently need specialist treatment, they will refer you to a government hospital or the National Dental Centre (NDC), where you can still be treated with public rates. Should you get a referral to the NDC from a private clinic however, you will have to pay the private rate offered by the NDC.

Private clinics can easily be found island-wide and come with varying reputations and costs. More of that later, though it is worth noting here that some private clinics in local ‘heartlands’ (non-expat areas) often have very comparable rates to public clinics.

Within Singapore there tend to be two main types of private dental clinics, the single dentist practice, and the bigger group practice. The disadvantage of a single dentist practice being that if you need specialist treatment they are likely to have to refer you onto another practice, but equally, if you are being treated within a big group practice covering all specialities, you may feel that you are being held hostage to their proposed treatment plans and pricing.

Overall, people tend to choose between private and polyclinics depending on their budget and insurance, and between GDPs and specialists depending on their needs.

Dental Treatment

A GDP (General Dental Practitioner) is your starting point for all dental treatments. S/he will do a check on your overall teeth and gum health as well as offer advice and treatments for oral hygiene, and then suggest specialist treatment as required.

Specialist treatments can best be categorized under the seven recognized dental specialties that dentists train in.

These include treatments for toothaches, cracked or knocked out teeth, tooth abscesses, and infections.  For example:

Root canal treatment: the treatment of an infection in a tooth to prevent reinfection and save the natural tooth. Treatment is done under local anaesthetic and involves making an opening in the crown of the tooth to remove the infected tissue.

Oral Maxillofacial

Specialists in this field conduct more surgical treatments, such as tooth extraction and removal of tumours and cysts. For example:

Wisdom teeth removal: undertaken when the wisdom teeth have impacted or failed to come through into your mouth because of lack of space in the jaw. Removal of these teeth is done under general or local anaesthetic.

Oral Medicine

Oral medicine is, as the name suggests, the meeting of dental and medically related disorders. This can include diagnosing and treating chronic or recurrent problems such as the removal of pre-cancerous lesions or problems occurring due to autoimmune disorders. For example:

Oral cancer screening: running a biopsy on mouth sores that linger for more than 2 weeks.

This speciality treatment is most commonly associated with braces, but the conditions it treats are far wider than just the movement of the teeth. It actually covers all development of your teeth and bite, so that can include cleft lip and palate management, sleep apnoea or snoring problems, and other jaw abnormalities.

Treatments include fixed braces, aligners and removable retainers. For example:

Fixed braces: these use brackets made from either stainless steel or clear ceramic porcelain fixed to the teeth and varying width and strength of wires interlaced between them to encourage teeth movement.

Invisalign: a well-known system that is often referred to in lists of treatments offered by a clinic, this is a modern alternative to conventional fixed braces and involves a series of removable clear plastic trays moulded to your mouth to straighten your teeth or treat problems with bite or overcrowding.

As the name would suggest this is dentistry for children from birth through to adolescents. Treatments within this speciality include preventative services such as sealants and fluoride therapy, through to fillings, crowns, and extractions.

Paedodontic specialists also manage traumatic injury to developing teeth and jaws, and dental treatment for children with special needs. Treatments include:

Fillings: damaged teeth are restored using metal free, tooth coloured filling material.

Sealants: the use of non-invasive methods to protect teeth which may be prone to cavity formation.

The treatment of disease in your gums and surrounding tissues. Conditions can range from bad breath through to tooth sensitivity gum recession and full abscesses. Treatments include crown lengthening through to soft tissue grafting. Treatments include:

Deep cleanse: when a dental hygienist runs an advanced form of cleaning to remove bacteria, tartar and other debris that has built up under the gumline.

These specialists treat problems such as missing or discoloured teeth. Treatments include crowns, bridges, teeth whitening, veneers, laminates, and implants. Think of an old grandpa removing his dentures and placing them in a glass of water and you’ve got prosthodontics! Treatments include:

Crowns/Caps: used when significant tooth restructuring is needed. Aesthetic, high-strength materials such as porcelain and zirconia or another composite resin are used to rebuild, protect, and strengthen your teeth.

Veneers: thin porcelain shells that are custom fitted to improve the colour, position and shape of your teeth.

Implants: these are used for heavily compromised or missing teeth, an implant is placed in the jawbone and fuses with your natural bone to form a strong foundation for replacement teeth.

Also falling within the above specialities, but deserving of their own individual mentions because of their popularity, are treatments such as aesthetics/cosmetic and sports dentistry.

More commonly known as cosmetic dentistry, aesthetics crosses oral surgery, orthodontics, prosthodontics, and periodontics. Treatments include teeth whitening, bonding, botox injections, and more. For example:

Whitening: a special light-activated gel is applied to your teeth and light applied to enhance and speed up the action of the agent which whitens and brightens your teeth.

Bonding: used to close a gap in the teeth or straighten uneven teeth, composite resin is used to bond the teeth in a pain-free and undamaging way.

Botox: used for improving facial aesthetics and in the treatment of joint and muscle pain in the face and throat.

Dermal Fillers: used to assist in the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles or transform thin, sagging lips.

Sports Dentistry

This is the fitting of specially moulded, protective sports mouth guards for children and adults.

Available Dentists

So you know what treatment you are after and you’re ready to make an appointment, let’s talk about where to go.

If all you are after is a good old clean and polish of your gnashers and time isn’t of the essence, then it’s well worth looking at one of the island’s polyclinics.

The National Healthcare Group and SingHealth both run polyclinics. Appointments can be made online through the National Healthcare Group booking system but do note, prices for foreigners are different to those quoted for Singaporeans.

If your child is in need of more urgent attention then the paediatric unit at the NDCS (National Dental Centre Singapore) offers a walk-in clinic for new patients between 8 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.

Adult emergencies can be treated at the A&E section of any hospital, but they will only actually treat truly urgent or painful cases – most of the time you will be handed some painkillers and advised to make a follow up appointment.

If what you are after is a bit more than just some sparkle, then you should probably be looking at one of the private dental clinics.  Finding these isn’t difficult. You can find a lot of them online at Dental Departure.

In addition, just about every local shopping mall has a clinic, and you can find clusters of clinics in the larger medical centres such as Novena Medical Centre and Camden Medical Clinic off Orchard Road.

The MOH (Ministry of Health) and Singapore Dental Council even have a search portal of all registered dentists in Singapore with listed fees (for those who have opted for inclusion).

But as usual, word-of-mouth (pardon the pun) recommendations tend to be the best so ask around. The really brave among you might spot the loveliest smiles on the street and ask for their recommendation.

For the rest of you, these are a few of our suggestions:

Dr. Penny Hall at Madeliene Gunaratnam Dental Surgery

Top of all expat’s ‘little black book’ of referrals is Dr. Penny Hall, a British dentist with 28 years of experience in family dental practice. Secretly known as the Nigella Lawson of dentistry, Penny is your go-to for all the family – from adults, teens, children, and babies.

Penny specialises in minimal intervention dentistry including cosmetics, and is a very sound and balanced dentist in what can often feel like being in a captive market for upsells. Penny offers prevention and general everyday dentistry alongside specialist treatments such as white fillings, whitenings, and sealants.

Penny’s own ‘little black book’ of specialist dentists for further treatment ensures you are only ever in the best of hands.

Dr. David Bell at International Dental Clinic

Another one of the expat’s, and locals, favourites, Dr. David Bell is renowned for his gentle, honest, and affordable dentistry for families. Established in 2008 and conveniently located at the Camden Medical Clinic, International Dental Clinic is firmly placed as one of the leading dentists in Singapore, sought out for its welcoming atmosphere and friendly approach.

Dr. Bell and his team offer a full range of dental treatments and methods, including general and cosmetic, children’s, orthodontics, and implant dentistry.

Dr. Robin Baek at Garden Dental

Located right in the heart of the expat family’s natural stomping ground of Bukit Timah, Garden Dental takes a holistic focus to oral health, believing that it is an important indicator of one’s physical and psychological health. The combination of high quality dental treatments and the tranquil and soothing environment of the clinic ensures its well-deserved recognition as one a top clinic for expats in Singapore.

Aside from the individually named dentists, some of the following dental clinics are also worth considering:

Expat Dental

Based in the Novena Medical Centre, Expat Dental is known for its dental excellence and patient comfort.  With a full set of specialisations on offer, from restorative dentistry to sports dentistry and even digital dentistry, you can be sure you’ll be on the receiving end of the latest techniques and highest quality care.

Smile Focus

One of the first clinics to cater for the expat client, Smile Focus has been going strong for over 21 years and continues to deliver trustworthy, quality dental care for the whole family, with a full range of services on offer from its Camden Medical Centre based clinic.

Unity Denticare

For those of you looking for a household brand for affordable dental care, then we recommend Unity Denticare, established in 1971 as part of NTUC Health – Singapore’s largest healthcare cooperative – and with 18 dental clinics island wide.

Pricing for dental treatments across Singapore is generally predictable and transparent.

The Ministry of Health even publishes a list of average fees paid by private patients in Singapore’s public institutions, which makes a great starting point for comparisons with private clinics.

Costs will vary according to whether you are seeing a GDP or a specialist, the type of procedure, its complexity, and your chosen dentist’s experience and training. Expect to pay more for those who teach at public institutions, are opinion leaders in their speciality, or sit on advisory boards.

All clinics start with an initial consultation fee, which is on average between SGD $40 and $65 for public clinics, and more like $90 – $160 for private specialist consultants.

Costs for treatments can also vary according to the quality and associated cost of materials used.

For example, if you go for the full bling option and choose gold for your dental crown you can expect to pay more than if you use a non-precious metal; dental implants manufactured in Europe tend to cost more than those made in Asia, while clear ceramic braces are more expensive than metal versions. So before you whip out your credit card, it is worth doing a bit of research to see what a clinic charges for whicht treatment and product.

We have put together a starter table for you to use as a comparison.  Prices are in SGD $.

Dental Treatment Details Average Cost: Public Clinic Average Cost: Private Clinic
Polishing & Scaling $46.90 – $89.50 $72 – $140
Braces Double Arch Non-surgical $3,221 – $6,500 $4,500 – $10,700
Impacted Wisdom Tooth Surgery Per Tooth $381 – $998 $400 – $2,500
Dental Implants Per Implant $1,600 – $1,944   $2,000 – $5,350
Crowns Per Crown $750 – $1,284 $850 – $2,750
Root Canal Treatment Per tooth – Anterior Tooth $294 – $493 $400 – $1,450
Full Dentures Per Arch $555 – $1,627 $640 – $2,140

*Please note, these costs are correct at time of going to press and have been referenced across a wide variety of private clinics.

Dental care in Singapore is not going to be cheap, especially if you choose a private clinic and need ongoing specialist care, so it would be prudent to get some insurance in place to assist should you need it.

Generally speaking most expats’ health insurance doesn’t automatically cover dental care. It might cover you for emergency dental treatment for accidental damage caused (as might your travel insurance when an accident occurs on an overseas trip), but not much beyond that. At the same time, dental insurance can be difficult to secure as a stand-alone policy in Singapore.

The solution then is to ‘upgrade’ your existing health insurance to include a fully comprehensive plan with dental care.

It is generally straightforward to add dental benefits to your medical insurance and the majority share the same features as follows:

  • Coverage for routine cleaning through to dental surgery and orthodontics.
  • Coverage limits up to SGD $8,000 / year.

If you have insurance in place it is worth checking with your dental clinic whether billing can be managed directly between your insurer and the clinic.

Not all clinics enable this direct billing, but most will assist with your filling of forms should you need to do it yourself. Some clinics may require a ‘Letter of Guarantee’ from your insurer prior to your treatment.

If you have taken Permanent Resident status then you can benefit from subsidies under the Government’s MediSave and CHAS (Community Health Assist Scheme) schemes. After treatment, fill in a medical claims authorisation form and your dental clinic will help you to submit the claim.

Once approved, the claimable amount will be sent to your clinic. This process usually takes no more than 2 weeks.

There are many different options for insurance. Here are a couple to look at:

Chubb Dental Care Plus: offers a comprehensive set of coverage for dental treatments and check-ups, with up to 80% coverage on emergency and routine treatments and x-rays, across a network of clinics. There are also benefits on offer, such as SGD $150 worth of dental vouchers with two years of continuous coverage, and up to 25% savings on dental treatments for up to 4 nominated family members.

Medical International: offers comprehensive insurance plans through partners Allianz, Bupa, Cigna, and others, enabling dental health wherever you are in the world. Covering maintenance care, restorative treatments, and surgical procedures, policies also come with benefits such as “no waiting time” service plans.

Pacific Prime Singapore: one of the few insurance providers which offers the option to create a stand-alone policy comprised of mainly dental benefits at a very reasonable cost.  Alternatively they can also help you add a dental rider to an existing healthcare policy.

Other major insurers which the majority of dental clinics accept direct billing from include:

As with all things insurance, pre-warned is pre-armed so read up on your policy and your clinic’s payment terms ahead of committing to any treatment.

Choosing the Best Dentist

Visiting the dentist is a highly personal experience. For some the mere thought of the dental chair incurs cold sweats amid memories of poor childhood experiences, for others it may be a mixture of excitement and relief to be dealing with perceived oral flaws.

Within this guide we have given you an overview of types of dentists available, dental treatments on offer, pricing, and insurance, but how do you actually decide which dentist to choose?

Start by asking yourself a number of questions:

  • Is time of the essence? If you are in pain now, you don’t want to wait a few weeks for a referral, so a quick phone call to a private clinic to be seen today is your best option. If it is just for a routine clean and polish, then check out the many polyclinics across the island and save your pennies for the hot date you plan to secure with your future shiny smile.
  • Do you prefer an individual personal experience for an immediate need, or is it more important to find a centre that covers all specialities and treatments for future potential needs?
  • Is location important? You might be able to find cheaper dentists outside of the expat areas, or if it is convenience that is important, finding a recommended dentist in the CBD near to work or tourist areas near to home might override the price increase.
  • Is it important to you that the clinic offers a direct billing option with an insurer to save the headache of endless form filling?

Word of mouth recommendation is always highly advised so perhaps ask around your colleagues, friends, or other parents (if the treatment is for your child).

What you are looking to hear in a recommendation is as follows:

  • That the dentist has good communication skills and objectivity.  That they listen to you and advise on treatment options clearly while also addressing any concerns you have.
  • That the dentist in question has the specialist training and extensive experience with the treatment that you or your family member is likely to need.
  • That the clinic itself can offer the range of procedures that you or your family member may require, or has a referral program in place to other recommended clinics.

Visiting the Dentist

So you’ve selected the dentist, now for the appointment. What do you need to do ahead of your first visit to the dentist in Singapore?

Rule number one: Don’t procrastinate! If you are due for a routine appointment or you have a concern, then get on it and make the appointment. Delays lead to problems escalating, which will ultimately cost you in further treatment being required.

Rule number two: If you are on a tight budget, let your dentist know upfront so that they can consider how to prioritise procedures. Ask for the estimated fees before booking the appointment and if you are using insurance, check your policy for coverage details.

Rule number three: Once you find a dentist you like, stick with them. Building a relationship with your dentist builds trust and minimises the risk that they will advise unnecessary treatment. It is not unheard of for dentists to criticise previous work you have had done and unnecessarily (and unethically) suggesting it is re-done through them.

Rule number four: If its aesthetic procedures you are after such as teeth whitening, don’t think you can be clever and skip the dentist for your local beauty salon instead. Their lack of qualification in specialist oral hygiene and healthcare will simply lead to more expensive dental treatment needed to rectify their poor work later on.

And last but not least:

Rule number five: Keep up the regular check-up appointments and hygiene routines recommended by your dentist. Ongoing maintenance and care of your teeth will minimize the number of subsequent visits and painful costs.

What to Look for in a Cosmetic Dentist?

Are you looking to find a cosmetic dentist in Singapore? You may unsure what to look for and how to determine if you’ve located a quality provider with all the services you need. Here are some key points to look for when you’re searching for an aesthetic dentistry clinic.

Variety and Customisation of Dental Services

Unfortunately, some cosmetic dentists are what you might call “one-trick ponies,” meaning that they tend to use the same favoured type of treatment for every issue. Avoid this kind of “one size fits all” dentistry, and instead find one of the best dental clinics in Singapore that offers a broad range of services and customises those treatments for each patient.

Well-Qualified Staff of Singapore Dentists

Of course, a top dental clinic needs to be led by well-trained, qualified dentists. When you’re investigating a particular dental clinic, check the background, qualifications, honours, and degrees attained by its dentists. One of the principal dentists at Orchard Scotts Dental is Dr. Ronnie Yap, who also serves as an executive committee member of the Aesthetic Dentistry Society of Singapore. Dr. Yap serves the patients at Orchard Scotts Dental along with other award-winning, experienced dentists.

Invest in Technology

A good aesthetic dentist in Singapore has access to modern technology, along with up-to-date supplies and equipment. Choose a dental clinic with well-designed facilities and newer equipment like how Orchard Scotts Dental adopted the iTero Element Intraoral Scanner for customers undergoing Invisalign treatment in Singapore. Using fresh innovations alongside time-tested treatments is one hallmark of a high-quality cosmetic dental team.

Teamwork and Excellent Service

In addition to qualified dentists with a great track record of success, a dental clinic needs support staff that are skilled at communicating with patients and handling the details of everyday business. When you’re looking for the right dental clinic, take time to talk to the front desk staff. Are they friendly and helpful? Are they knowledgeable and organised? Even the best dentists in Singapore need the support of a strong team in order to serve patients well.

Industry Leaders

Not every dental clinic has respected industry leaders on staff, but it’s definitely a bonus if you find one like Orchard Scotts Dental. Two of the dentists from Orchard Scotts Dental, Dr. Jerry Lim and Dr. Ronnie Yap, are recognised and respected leaders in their field of cosmetic dentistry in Singapore. In fact, the two of them founded the Aesthetics and Digital Dentistry Academy (ADDA), with the goal of advancing the “art and science of professional dentistry in Singapore through education, research, and development.” These men bring that same level of expertise and dedication to the examination room as they treat individual patients.

Aesthetic Dentistry – Unique Singapore

Orchard Scotts Dental (OSD) stands for non-invasive therapies and unconditional professionalism that allows OSD doctors to take aesthetic treatments far beyond conventional bite correction. The clinic’s specialists, widely recognized and respected for their skills and knowledge in their field, also actively participate in teaching, passing on their vast experience to young professionals in Singapore and abroad.

What’s more, OSD is Straumann’s premium implant partner and is authorized to provide Invisalign dental services throughout the country.

Eight Reasons For Comfortable Invisalign Alignment At Orchard Scotts Dental:

  • Invisalign Clinic

In 2014, the clinic received permission from Align Technology, a leader in invisible orthodontic solutions, to pioneer Invisalign technology in Singapore. The clinic’s specialists have been trained and have gained extensive experience in using the dental alignment system and can now help patients of all ages. All this, as well as a personal approach to clients and the desire to make their smiles as natural and attractive as possible, makes OSD stand out from the background of all other clinics.

  • Diamond Craftsmanship

Align Technology has awarded Orchard Scotts Dental the Diamond Doctor status – a sign of excellence, experience and ability to solve even the most difficult orthodontic problems.

Just imagine: from 2006 to September 30, 2016, OSD doctors gave new smiles to 1528 clients, each of whom left the clinic with perfectly straight teeth.

  • Beautiful natural smiles

At OSD, the art of aligning teeth is made to make sure your corrected bite and new smile look as natural as possible and blend in well with your facial features.

A beautiful smile is a subtle combination of the shape of the teeth, gums, lips and the shape of the face.Ideally, when you smile, the edges of your front teeth should lightly touch your lower lip. As true architects, OSD doctors take these factors into account when planning your bite correction so that as a result you get not only straight teeth, but also a beautiful harmonious smile.

  • Without tooth extraction

The priority of the clinic is the preservation of your natural teeth. More than 90% of OSD patients keep small molars intact and are pleasantly surprised that doctors were able to solve their problem without removing anything. These results are achieved through careful planning and utilization of the full potential of the Invisalign system.

Technical developments allow doctors to make the treatment process more comfortable and effective. Orchard Scotts Dental was one of the first clinics in the country to introduce the iTero laser scanner, with which the doctor can accurately determine the contours of the patient’s teeth, gum structure and occlusion, as well as create a 3D model that can then be used for various procedures and activities, including planning treatment with the Invisalign system and creation of dental impressions for subsequent restorative treatment.

  • Minimum time spent

The clinic understands how important time is for some patients (especially those who flew to Singapore for a short time). In most cases, doctors can plan treatment so that the smile of joy on your face is flawless by the day or departure date.

  • Feedback system

It is very important for the clinic to know the opinion of each patient, therefore, it was decided to create the Invisalign Reward System feedback program, in which patients can receive teeth whitening gels and other products in exchange for opinions and recommendations.

  • Bonus procedures

As an OSD patient, you can get two beauty treatments absolutely free. Campaign applies to all Invisalign services except Invisalign Lite and I-7. This is a great bonus, especially if you need to correct small errors in the position of the teeth.

This information is for general information only and should not be construed as medical advice from the Med-Turizm All decisions about treatment, action after treatment and action during recovery should only be made after appropriate consultation with a qualified physician.

Reasons for tooth extraction

Although permanent teeth can last a lifetime, teeth that have undergone caries or have been damaged, must be removed.

Among other factors:

Extra teeth

Risk of infection

Periodontal disease

What to expect from the removal procedure tooth?

Before a tooth is extracted, your dentist will give you an injection of topical anesthetic that numbs the area from which one will be removed or multiple teeth. If you need to remove multiple teeth or a tooth is damaged, your dentist may apply general anesthesia, which will stop pain throughout the body, so that you will sleep during the entire procedure.

If a tooth is damaged, the dentist will cut out the bone and gum tissue that covers the tooth, and then grabs the tooth with forceps and gently wiggles it, to loosen its attachment to the ligaments and jaw that secure it. Sometimes a tooth that is difficult to remove must be removed piece by piece.

Once the tooth has been removed, the dentist will place a gauze pad in the cavity formed and asks you to bite it to stop bleeding. Sometimes the dentist will put several stitches (which are usually dissolve on their own) to close the gingival edges above the removal site tooth.

What to tell your own dentist before removing a tooth

Before removing a tooth, tell your dentist about your condition health, past and present illnesses, medications and supplements that you accept, and also if you have one of the following factors:

Artificial or affected heart valves

History of bacterial endocarditis

Congenital heart disease

Weakened immune system

Liver disease (cirrhosis)

Artificial joint, e.g. hip prosthesis

When to contact dentist

If bleeding does not stop, or acute pain lasts more than 4 hours after tooth extraction, you should call your doctor. You also need to contact your doctor if you have any of the following symptoms:

Vomiting or nausea

Signs of infection such as chills or fever

Chest pain, cough or shortness of breath

Excessive discharge, redness or inflammation in affected area

After treatments: Here are some tips on how to reduce pain, reduce the risk of infection and speed up healing.

Gently bite down on the gauze pad you put on your dentist to stop bleeding and allow a clot to form blood in the cavity where the tooth was. Follow your dentist’s recommendations for how long to leave the gauze pad after tooth extraction and what to do if the pad will get wet with blood.

Take pain relievers or available medicines prescribed by your dentist, such as paracetamol, ibuprofen, or aspirin.

Apply an ice bag to the extracted tooth area shortly after surgery to avoid inflammation. Apply ice for 10 minutes. Talk to your dentist about how to do this safely.

Do not spit or rinse your mouth for 6 hours after tooth extraction to avoid removing the blood clot that formed in tooth cavity.

Rest for at least 1 day after tooth extraction.

Minimize your activity for the next 1-2 days.

After 6 hours, dissolve a teaspoon of salt in a glass warm water and rinse your mouth with the resulting solution.

Do not smoke, as this may slow down healing.

Don’t drink from a straw for another 24 hours.

Eat soft foods (yogurt, soup) the next day after tooth extraction. Gradually include solid foods in your diet as needed. wound healing.

Continue to use your toothbrush and floss and do not forget to brush your tongue; however, do not touch the extracted tooth site. This will help avoid infection. Place a pillow under your head while lying down. Lying without a pillow prolongs bleeding.

Two months without deaths. How they fight coronavirus in Singapore

I first heard about the coronavirus in Dubai, where I flew to visit friends during the Chinese New Year celebrations. At the same time, on 23 January, the first case of the virus was reported in Singapore. It was a Chinese tourist who had come to town for the holidays. Singapore is historically a favorite vacation and shopping destination for upper-middle-income residents of the Middle Kingdom (those who are simpler go to Malaysia and Thailand).

And the period of the Lunar New Year is the traditional time of holidays in China, many Chinese are accustomed to traveling abroad at this time, so Asian countries were among the first where the coronavirus began to spread.

Useful experience SARS

Since the end of January, isolated cases of infection in Singapore began to occur every day, and I flew home already wearing a mask that I managed to get at the Dubai airport. Taught by the bitter experience of the SARS epidemic in 2002-2003, Singaporeans quickly realized that the case smelled like kerosene (in this case, a disinfectant), and all arriving passengers at the airport were already met by a thermal imager. Well, something, but the ability to follow instructions, regulations and rules from Singaporeans can be learned. For this, they need to thank their first prime minister, Lee Kuan Yew, who led the city-state from the third world to the first thanks to his political foresight and tough, if not draconian, methods. Punishment with canes, by the way, is still used in Singapore for certain offenses.

Until the end of February, Singapore lived as usual, tourists continued to come / Reuters

The country lived as usual until the end of February; the Chinese continued to arrive, the locals avoided them.I remember how I got into a taxi and the driver said: “Ma’am, right in front of you I gave a lift to the Chinese who coughed and sneezed, and if you want to cancel the trip, you will not be charged a penalty.” He had not yet had time to finish, it seems to me, as I jumped out of the car in horror.

But after the first cases of infection of the local population with the virus were recorded without a history of travel to China, the authorities began to act more actively. First, air traffic with China was closed. Further on the list were South Korea, Japan, etc.

The propaganda of clean hands was everywhere, leaflets were posted everywhere with step-by-step instructions on how to protect yourself in a pandemic, the circle of contacts of the sick was tracked with detective accuracy, as a result of which several clusters of infection were identified, including a business meeting at the Grand Hyatt hotel, whose participant then flew to France. Temperature measuring devices have appeared in all public places – from simple infrared thermometers to thermal imagers, as, for example, at the entrance to our business center.

Nevertheless, the infection spread quickly – it could be tracked on the state portal, where data on each new case is published. Also, if you wish, you can join the official WhatsApp group and receive all updates online.

Life in quarantine

On March 16, at 23.59, Singapore introduced a mandatory two-week quarantine for all local residents returning home. Our friends flew on vacation to Bali on March 13, and the government announced a new measure on March 15.They had a day to go back. But due to the excitement, they were able to exchange tickets only for a flight that arrived at 0.30 on March 17, that is, they were late by 30 minutes, for which they were quarantined. Upon arrival, they filled out a four-sheet document and were ordered not to leave their residence for two weeks. The Ministry of Labor monitored their geolocation via a mobile phone, and they could be called at any time to check that the phone was with them. If you are an employee, this form of involuntary leave is called LOA (Leave of Absence) and your employer receives a subsidy of 100 Singapore dollars (SGD) per day.

During the epidemic, Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Xianglong appealed to fellow citizens three times / Reuters

Although mandatory quarantine was introduced only on the night of March 16-17, due to the increased incidence of diseases, on March 26, we also came to the attention of the Ministry of Labor – due to our day trip to the neighboring Indonesian island on March 15th. They began to send us sms twice a day with a request to follow the link and confirm our location. We only had an hour to respond to this message.Believe me, it was a lot of stress: having a work visa in Singapore, you cannot be light on any information coming from the Ministry of Labor, since for violating the quarantine regime, the authorities deprive not only visitors of work visas, but also permanent resident status and even the passports of their citizens! Fortunately, two days later we were left behind, as two weeks had elapsed since our trip.

The government urged companies to move their employees to teleworking mode wherever possible. If the work still involved being in the office, then it was necessary to maintain a safe distance of at least 1 m between workplaces.

Control and Panic

Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Xianglong, son of Lee Kuan Yew, delivered a live speech on March 12 to remind once again the rules of hygiene and that the government has everything under control. But as soon as the citizens found out about the planned broadcast, they took it as an unkind signal and together ran to supermarkets to buy rice, noodles and vital toilet paper.Fortunately, there were no fights and self-harm.

The prime minister appealed to the nation twice more: to declare an orange level of danger in the country and to introduce partial quarantine in the country – from April 7 to May 4. And every time people rushed to empty the shelves of grocery stores.

Two months without deaths

Singapore treated the sick well, and until March 21st we had not had a single death out of 432 cases. At first, the treatment was free for everyone. Then it was decided to treat free of charge only law-abiding residents of the state. The rest (tourists and those for whom the law is not written) had to shell out a tidy sum to get access to the ventilator in case of trouble. But then they even asked tourists to look for help elsewhere.

From April 7 to May 4, the city-state is in partial quarantine. Everything is closed except for essential facilities such as pharmacies, grocery stores, banks, dentistry (for emergencies only), post office, dry cleaners, hairdressers (for regular haircuts and styling only). We are allowed to leave the house for groceries, for a run, for a walk with children. Any contact with friends and even relatives is prohibited if you do not live together. The Ministry of Labor has allocated about 3,000 employees who move around the city and record all cases of violation of the self-isolation regime. The first time you get off with a written warning. The second time – a fine from SGD300 to SGD10,000 and up to 6 months in prison (yes, everything is harsh here), for the third time completely dull ones face a fine of up to SGD20,000 and up to 12 months in prison.

State concern

As far as business is concerned, not everything is so sad here, and the state really cares about its own people, does not give up. SGD59.9 billion was allocated to support the economy, which is equal to 12% of Singapore’s GDP. The president, prime minister and the entire cabinet have given up some of their one-month salaries in favor of medical workers on the front lines. And the salaries of the Singapore government are among the highest in the world.

The space at the checkout is divided taking into account the “social distance” / Reuters

Singapore historically lives off the tourist flow, in the vast majority from China, and without guests it was getting worse.Revenue from hotels, restaurants, taxis, airlines, duty-free shops, fashion boutiques and jewelry and watch brands fell 50–95%. Only the grocery stores were doing well.

While movement in the city was still unrestricted, hotels and restaurants tried to stick around, offering discounts and promotions to somehow cover the rent and staff salaries. By the way, duty-free shops were the first to get relief on rent. Next came the turn of the rest of the retail, bars, restaurants, offices. With persistence, it was possible to negotiate a 20-40% discount on the monthly fee. From April 7 to May 4, retail stores are free of rent.

The watch business in which I work, in February – March, was still a little afloat at the expense of local customers, but in April, with the introduction of quarantine and the closure of all points of sale, the trade stopped completely. Many brands are now trying to launch online sales. But psychologically, clients are not yet very ready for this and would rather wait with the purchase of an expensive watch until the end of the quarantine.

The state finances from 25 to 75% of the wages of all citizens of the country and permanent residents temporarily working from home. Unfortunately, foreigners working on visas do not fall into this category, although taxes are regularly paid. Taxi drivers whose cars are in long-term lease are allowed not to pay it during quarantine.

Also, absolutely all people living in Singapore are given free reusable masks, which can be obtained from community centers – one for each resident upon presentation of an identity document. So we feel that we are cared for and protected by the government.

I really hope that by showing conscientiousness and caution, all together we will be able to localize and stop this virus and get out of the global crisis as soon as possible and with the least losses, be it financial, family, or mental.

galleys, career agencies and many interviews /’s blog – blog about Tech Career / Habr

My name is Andrey Vogulkin, I am a fullstack developer. He worked for 3 years as a front-end developer in a startup, for 4 years – as an Oracle developer in telecom, changed 4 countries. In this article, using several cases as an example, I will tell you about how I was looking for a job in one of 4 countries – in Singapore: where to look for a job, what to prepare for, what they ask in an interview when looking for a job on full-stack / front-end (React) , and I will try to describe the IT market in Singapore from the point of view of my experience.

Market features

The peculiarity of Singapore is that there are many immigrants from India and China. Therefore, potential emigrants often worry that they will have to compete with them. But there is nothing to be afraid of: engineers from Russia have proven themselves well in the international labor market and are highly valued. There are many Indians in Singapore, but often they are low-skilled personnel, so you definitely won’t have to fight for a vacancy with them.

Note . On the topic of the popularity of Russian developers, there is an interesting post in the Inflationary Shock telegram channel. The author tells how he was looking for a freelancer from Russia, and found an Indian who was trying to pretend to be Russian.

Why go to Singapore

Singapore is attractive for an IT specialist for its technological focus. The government is stimulating the development of new technologies – the number of IT companies here is estimated at tens of thousands: from tiny startups to tech giants like Google and Facebook. Companies from Russia also open their offices here. The country’s growth is pushing the market to search for specialists day and night. But there are rumors that the policy for expats is changing and the government will reduce the visa quota to improve conditions for Singaporeans.

Good infrastructure . The country is a “remake”, there are almost no old buildings, a lot of greenery and shade. Excellent roads, well-developed public transport. At the same time, there are few traffic jams, because a car is a luxury in the country. Owning a car means taxes, fees, fees, toll roads – very expensive.

High standard of living .13th place in the ranking of the most expensive cities. The average salary is 3,000 SGD, but since, due to government policy, almost all indigenous people have their own homes, people do not live homeless, but live well. Most of the apartments have a swimming pool and gym, good transportation, air conditioning and rain protection systems. Moreover, there are several tens of thousands of millionaires in the city.

Everyone is equal before the law . Whether a tramp or a billionaire, everyone is responsible according to the law. If only because there are security cameras everywhere in the country, so the likelihood of a crime is minimal. This allows a high level of security to be achieved. Newcomers do not commit crimes, because they are afraid, and Singaporeans have no need – they already live well.

How to prepare for your job search

Visa or work permit . There are three types of visas.
  • S Pass (SP) – for specialists.
  • Employment Pass (EP) – for highly qualified professionals with education (suitable for programmers).
  • Personalized Employment Pass (PEP) – rather for those who already work in Singapore, because one of the conditions that the salary must be more than 144,000 SGD (Singapore dollars).

I was considering Employment pass. You can move with her yourself and take your family with you.

This is how the Singapore Employment pass looks like. And here is the history of the visa holder with step-by-step instructions for obtaining.

Requirements for the offer . Before starting the search, I made sure that I pass all the requirements for obtaining a work visa, for example, higher education, work experience and a salary of $ 4500 per month. The company that invites you must also confirm that it has carefully studied the resume of Singaporeans, but you are the one who is suitable for the position. The government monitors the balance between immigrants and Singaporean citizens.

Insurance . In Singapore, it is compulsory for everyone and paid by the employer. Physician visits and medications are fully covered even by basic insurance.

Galleys. The market itself, as elsewhere, consists of outsourcing (galley), product companies and an enterprise.

What to write in the resume

A good resume is a third of a win.

General structure .From my experience, I have highlighted some points that HR most often asked about when drafting their internal documents:

  • General work experience in years.
  • Experience in years in the context of technologies.
  • Description of the best achievements in various locations.
  • Technology stack that you are familiar with.
  • Personal assessment of your knowledge.
  • Nationality.

Detailed information about yourself, work experience, certification and skills: this is how IT specialists in Singapore make up their resume.

First page . To make it easier for recruiters to study the resume, I put on the first page brief information about myself, contacts and the above data, except for the third paragraph. The easier it is for a recruiter to find important information, the higher the applicant’s chances of getting an interview.

Work experience . On the second page I talked about my work experience, starting with the last one. He indicated the month of the beginning and the month of the end of work and the total length of service in this place. He also indicated achievements for each item.Try to summarize your work experience and describe the achievements as vividly as possible: what tasks you faced, how you solved them.

Lifehack . What should you focus on when writing a resume? If you have acquaintances who have gone abroad, you can look at their resume and compare with yours. Alternatively, search for developer profiles from large companies on Linkedin for great examples. For example, here is a resume for Jun from Singapore:

This is what a good resume might look like

Resume for each vacancy .It’s a good idea to rewrite your resume for a vacancy every time. This takes time but can be beneficial. Look in the vacancy, what qualities and work experience the company highlights, and focus on them.

Literacy . Be sure to check your CV for literacy. Find a native speaker, let him correct the constructions: a well-designed resume inspires more trust from HR.

Note . The principles of working with a resume for Singapore (in the author’s description) are similar to those that apply here.We wrote about them in the article “How to prepare a good resume for an IT specialist.”

Where and how to look for work

When you have a resume ready, you can proceed to the search.
My strategy is “I respond to whatever is roughly appropriate.”

If there are no friends and acquaintances to help with work, LinkedIn will help out (in Russia it is available through a VPN). Take a premium while you search.

Feel free to connect with people on LinkedIn and share your resume . Often, after sending a resume for one position, HR offers 2-3 more, and also gives recommendations on the interview process, the required salary, and even suggests what they may ask.Be sure to give HR’s feedback on each round from their side.

Translate the profile to the required country so that recruiters can see the resume. HR often find applicants themselves and write in a personal message with suggestions, so it’s better to spend a couple of hours filling out a profile. And be sure to indicate that you are looking for a job.

LinkedIn profile

In the search, you can specify the desired vacancy and location.

On request Senior Java Software Engineer the service gives 240 jobs in Singapore

I went to a real estate management startup via LinkedIn.The company operates in four countries, with a large engineering team primarily in Singapore. After submitting my resume, I received a link to take an online test on the Codility platform.

Test consisted of three tasks and took 2.5 hours. In the first task, it was necessary to download the archive with the page template and content, layout and upload back. The second contained a template for a React component with a ready-made layout and a description of the Get-endpoint. The third task: using jQuery to get data from the Get-endpoint and add it to the DOM.

Interview . Three days later I received a short questionnaire and an invitation to the next round of interviews with one of the team leaders. After half an hour of conversation, the interviewer proposed to solve a small task on an online platform, it was necessary to transform the array into an array of subarrays of three elements.

Three days later I received an invitation to the next stage of an online interview with an Engineering Manager. I refused this interview because I received an offer from another company.

Conditions (spied on glassdoor) of the company are good.Salary 8-10,000 SGD, trial period 4 months, office near the center of Singapore (ideal to rent something nearby). And then there is insurance and a performance bonus (bonus) from 1 to 2 salaries at the end of the trial period.

Other Resources for IT Job Search

To find a job, you have to send hundreds of responses, as I did. Don’t stop at LinkedIn – try different platforms. Here is some of them.

Indeed . The world’s largest job aggregator, which also operates in Singapore. Here you can upload your resume, spy salaries and find suitable vacancies.

Search Indeed Home Page. You can enter the desired position and location.

MyCareersFuture . Here’s how the company positions itself: “ My Careers Future is Singapore’s premier website to help you find a job, advance your career and more. “Differs from other sites with government support.

Home page and search. You can search by job title or keywords, select the type of employment and the minimum wage

Hays . This is an international recruiting agency. They work with different specialists, including those from IT.

Review of Hays on Google

Glassdoor . On, in addition to vacancies, there are reviews about the company. I advise you to find and read the opinions of previous employees before applying for a job. You can save yourself the hassle of ineffective managers.

Indian management is always busy flattering US managers. Only people who speak a lot are valued here »

Jobs in Singapore . This site stands out and is interesting in that it is a must-have platform for posting jobs for expats.

Jobs in Singapore Home Page

It is only available to local people. Here you can spy a fork for any vacancy, but you cannot respond. In any case, you can spy on the salary fork to bargain with recruiters.

Recruitment agencies . There are a lot of vacancies served by recruiting agencies, so feel free to share your resume with various HRs (even if you don’t like it).

HR here are attacked by an army of citizens of India and China. Therefore, to speed up the process, send your resume wherever possible. HRs will start sharing it within their networks and you will get more engagement.

And there are hundreds of such resumes! Experience is an important part of a resume, but there’s no need to talk about every day of your life.HR doesn’t read that, no matter how much candidates like it.

The advantage of working with a recruiting agency is that it is more profitable for them to tell you a possible salary and successfully complete the hiring process: their bonus depends on this.

At the first contact with HR – immediately bargain.

At the first contact, when they ask for the current salary and the desired one, I start working as a “salesperson”. I usually drag out the conversation with ideas that I need to communicate with the team and clarify what responsibility will be in the current position. At the same time, I try to give approximate expectations for the future salary without specifying the current one. Sometimes it works. If you already have an offer from another company, you can use this as a bargaining chip:

– For the fact that I will accept your offer, and not another company, you will have to pay me (with a salary)!

Through a recruiting agency, I went to a young startup. It was founded in an office interior design agency, conceived as an automation of internal processes and has grown into a separate product.

On the first call to , HR from the recruiting agency clarified everything I wrote in my resume and salary expectations.A week later, I got a call back with an offer to go through an online technical interview, and an hour before the interview, HR sent me an email with little tips about topics that might be in the interview.

Interview and first test . The technical interview began with the usual questions about experience and goals, and after 15 minutes of communication, the interviewer suggested solving three technical problems.

  • One – no implementation: just speculate about the options.
  • The second task was the implementation of setTimeout within the Promise.
  • The third is the implementation of the factorial function. I wrote the most basic one on recursion. We discussed a little more how you can avoid stack overflows and check the input data types.

A week later, I received an offer for a final interview with the workshop in the office.

Test with CTO . STO explained the concept of the company and asked me to talk about the last two jobs in more detail and draw their main business process. Then I was asked to solve a logical problem, but they clarified that there are no correct answers. You just had to speculate out loud.

A week later I received a job offer. Conditions, like everyone else’s, in general: salary 8,000 SGD, probation period – 3 months, insurance, an office not far from the business center and a perfomance bonus in one salary.

Salary expectations

Where to get expectations for salary? The lower bar is about 6,500 SGD, it is possible to go for less if you live alone. Living in Singapore is very expensive. No not like this. Very expensive.

Renting an apartment in the center will cost 3,000 SGD, and this is not the limit. But if you live alone, you can rent a room for about 1,500 SGD.

If you love Asian cuisine and cook at home, you will save a lot on food. A local meal at the food court will cost $ 4, but coffee at Starbucks is about $ 6-7.

For a couple who go out to restaurants from time to time, the food budget could be $ 1000.

The minimum rate for living alone is 6500 SGD. It is quite easy to get it, but if you look at vacancies with salaries higher, then sometimes difficulties arise here. For example, they arose when I got a job in the second largest food tech startup (analogues in Russia – Yandex. Food and Delivery Club) with a million integrations and a distributed team.

Applied for the company’s vacancy on LinkedIn . The conditions are excellent: salary SGD 8,750, dentist’s compensation SGD 1,000 per year, training compensation SGD 1,000 per year and a voucher for SGD 20 each week on the platform of this company.

Received a polite auto-generated rejection in response.About a month later, HR knocked on my personal messages and offered a position to which I sent my resume. I described the situation to her. She took a short pause and came back with an answer: I will be scheduled for an interview, and the refusal is a system error.

Interview, refusal and interview again . The first interview was with an employee who simply clarified all the points of my resume and the desired salary. I was targeting SGD 8,000, but I was politely hinted that I must be very good for that kind of money.

Five days later, at about 11 am, I again received a polite auto-generated rejection. But an hour later, an SMS came with a proposal to continue the process and choose a date for the first technical interview.

Second interview . I was briefly interviewed on the basics of React, lifecycle methods, how the virtual DOM works, and hooks. Then they gave me a link to coderpad to complete a small task from the category “Easy on hackerrank” for 15 minutes.

Technical interview with Engineering Manager three days later .A very friendly and experienced interviewer described a little about what he does, plunged into the intricacies of building teams in their company. Then we moved on to the technical part: the interviewer showed me three tasks, explained the general essence of each, clarified my readiness and started a timer for 40 minutes.

  • The first task is for logic. After thinking for a couple of minutes, I remembered a similar problem on Hackerrank and wrote a solution in two lines. After explaining his solution, he suggested testing, and we moved on to the next task.
  • The second task was to find a bug in an already written algorithm.
  • The third is to add the logic of the ready-made list component with pagination buttons. The layout was already ready, it was necessary to write fetch in useEffect and hang events on the pagination buttons.

As soon as I finished with the first button, the interviewer laughed and said that the assignment was passed: he saw what he wanted. Said goodbye on a very good note.

Job offer .Three days later, I received an SMS from HR with an offer to call me. On the phone, she explained to me that they are very happy that I completed all the stages of the interview and showed my best side. To receive a written job offer, I must first confirm by phone that I will accept it. After clarifying with her once again what exactly she was proposing, he took time to think.

Unfortunately, I began to very often come across the fact that they ask for prior consent and give from one to two days for acceptance. But if I asked for more time, they never refused.

Interviews and Offers

I had four job interviews at different companies. I have already talked about three, I will describe the latter as an example.

I got a job in a very old logistics company, the main activity is marine logistics. On the basis of the company, a start-up was opened, the team was distributed, they opened an office in Singapore and were actively recruiting people.

I applied for one vacancy, but I was offered to try myself in another. The whole process was organized by the agency. HR agency consulted me a lot on the current market situation and possible salary.

First interview . It was conducted by the company’s frontend programmer: they walked through my experience, told me about the company, asked about my views on the industry. In the end, they offered to perform a small test task, assuring that it was really small.

Test task . At the end of the day, they gave a link to the test task repository. It turned out to be a project with a stack of React, TypeScript, Webpack, Jest. In the src folder there were 3 more folders with tasks and a README.

  • TypeScript knowledge assignment. Given a small function that accepts collections of different types as input, it was necessary to fix all errors in the assembly log.
  • Working with trees. Several examples of a tree structure are given; when traversing a node, it was necessary to return some result in recursion.
  • React. It is necessary to make a kind of ruler in Chrome, with a reaction to a hovering object of a certain type.

All tasks took me about 4 hours, but my knowledge of TypeScript is about zero. Three days after completing the assignment, I was invited to the final interview.

Second interview . The STO team gave a very detailed description of the company, I clarified some points of support for Legacy, but I was assured that other teams are doing this, and their goal is only a startup. The communication was very easy, which left a positive impression of the company. Two hours later, their HR called me and made a job offer.

My short “checklist”

At first, interviews seem like a scary thing, but with experience it becomes more pleasant to go to interviews. What advice would I give to those looking for a job?
  • Present yourself correctly, a resume will help here. Tell in detail and competently about your experience in previous places: where you worked, what tasks you solved and how.
  • Before technical interviews, do a warm-up, for example, at Hackerrank.
  • Don’t rush to accept the first offer.Go to several companies, compare the conditions, only then make a choice.
  • Ask questions. More questions means less misunderstandings.
  • HR from the agency is your friend. It is beneficial for him to find a good place for you, so do not refuse help.

I had dozens of fruitless LinkedIn responses and empty calls, a few unanswered tests, and outsourced offers. Failed attempts are also part of your job search, and don’t be intimidated by them.Try it, go to an interview: this is also a skill that can be pumped.
