How to Choose Correctly Sized Ready-Made Curtains

How To Order

We take you step by step through the order process

Armed with your measurements, you are now ready to order your curtains… but what size should you buy?

Width:

When we list or write curtain measurements, the width always comes before the drop.

Ready-made curtains are available in three standard widths: 112 cm (44 inches), 167 cm (66 inches) or 228 cm (90 inches).

You should choose the width that most closely matches the size of your track or pole.

The width measurement actually refers to the width of each curtain in the pair, as you need double the width of your track or pole in curtaining for the gathered effect. See this article for an explanation of what gather is: What is Gather?

Drop:

Ready-made curtains are available in three different drops: 137 cm (54 inches), 183 cm (72 inches) or 228 cm (90 inches). Some manufacturers also offer a 274 cm (108 inch) drop; click on this link to view the available designs: Larger Sizes.

If you would like a drop that falls between two sizes then why not take advantage of our speedy alteration service and have the curtains shortened to fit perfectly?

Simply tick the ‘shorten my curtains’ tick alongside the next longest drop. A box will pop up for you to enter drop you would like the curtains to be shortened to.

Curtains size-guide | Tips and Tricks Madura

Madura’s ready-made curtains are available in 3 widths: 145 cm, 200 cm, and 350 cm.

To find out which curtain size is best suited to your needs, first measure the length of the curtain rod.

If the rod is fixed to the wall or ceiling with a bracket, it should ideally jut out beyond the edge of the window by 20-30 cm on either side.

The further the rod extends beyond the window, the easier the window will be to open and the more light there will be.

If the rod is fixed between two walls, measure the space between them.

The width of the curtains should be 1.5 or 2 times the length of the rod. For light or sheer fabrics, the width can be up to 2.5 times the length of the rod.

Choosing the width of the curtain fabric depends on the length of the rod, but also on the desired effect.

The wider the curtain, the more pleats there will be for pencil pleat curtains, or the more undulating the fabric will be for an eyelet curtain.

Some models in the Madura range are available in the standard 280 cm height as well as an extra tall size of 350 cm for rooms with high ceilings, lofts and designer homes!

The rod should be fixed 5 cm above the window so as not to hinder opening it.

The length of your curtains will depend on the desired effect, with or without a break. For a clean and practical effect, opt for curtains which hang 1 cm off the ground.  For a more contemporary, breaking effect, add a supplementary 3-5 cm.

For pencil pleat curtains, measure the distance between the floor and the underside of the rod to determine the correct curtain length.

For an eyelet curtain, measure the distance from the floor to the top of the rod and add 3 cm, as the curtain is always above the eyelet sliding along the rod.

CURTAIN INFORMATION FOR DIY

For ready made curtains/tracks, rods and blinds bought from Spotlight, Curtain Wonderland and Freedom.

CURTAIN STYLES

1. PINCH PLEAT

Pinch pleat curtain on a ROD set.

The pinch pleat heading has stiffening tape sewn in with the pleats which makes this heading very stable.

It also stacks up well when drawn open, which makes this heading perfectly suited for wider windows.

This heading is not adjustable so you must include some extra measurements into your finished width size.

If you are using a ROD set include these extra measurements:

– Measure your actual window width
– Decide on the stack back measurement and include the return
– Allow a little extra so the curtains meet in the middle

Here is an example as to how it would work out:
180 cm window width
40 cm stack back   (2 x 20 cm, narrower windows or sheer curtains can have it at 15 cm each side,

wider windows can have a wider stack back).

—————–

220 cm track width

 20 cm return

20 cm extra              (5-20 cm each side)
—————–
260 cm curtain width

The ready-made pinch pleat curtains available in popular curtain stores come in these sizes:

Example 1. Width 120 cm, 180 cm, 240cm, 300cm                   length 213 cm, 221 cm, 230cm, 270cm Spotlight

Example 2. Width 200 cm, 270 cm, 320 cm                                length 213 cm, 221 cm, 250 cm  Curtain Wonderland

So for my window above I would need a 270 cm width curtain.

There are variations of widths and lengths depending on which brand, available in sheer and block out fabrics.

Curtain wonderland carry a lot of pinch pleat curtains, they are happy to help you with measurements.

The 221 cm ready made curtain length is ideal for a standard ceiling height, for high ceilings you might be able to use a 250 cm

or 270 cm length curtain.

The 213cm length sits right above the height of a standard size window (which should be 212cm, check your own window height).

If you are using a TRACK include these extra measurements

– First measure your actual window width
– then decide on the stack back measurement
– next is the overlap in the center of the track

(you only get an overlap arm on a cord drawn track)
– then also include the return back to the wall
– lastly, include a little extra so the curtains meet in the middle

Here is an example of how it would work out:
200 cm window width
50 cm stack back        [25 cm each side]

————————

250 cm track width

20 cm overlap             [10 cm each side]

20 cm return                [10 cm each side]
20 cm extra                  [5 cm-20 cm each side]
—————–

310 cm curtain width

You will need the 320 cm width curtain.

To have better control over your curtains use a cord drawn track, cords will also help with keeping the curtains clean.

To get a professional result you must train your curtains properly especially when you are using a pinch pleat heading on a store-bought track, I have done a blog with the instructions of how to do this, called: Pinch pleat curtain problems.

If you like a wider stack back to let in more light make sure you keep the overall curtain in proportion to the room and to the

window, the leading edge (inside edge of the curtain) should cover the wall when the curtains are in the opened position.

There are formulas for stack backs on the internet which you can search if you require further information.

I have noticed lately that Spotlight is phasing out the pinch pleat and inverted pleat ready-made curtains and are now focusing

more on the eyelet and pencil pleat curtains because they are adjustable and the S Fold curtain which is an easy system to use

and install.

Curtain Wonderland carry Pinch pleat and Eyelet curtains.

2. INVERTED PLEAT

The Inverted Pleat is simply a reverse of the Pinch Pleat, it needs a little more stack back space than the pinch pleat,

otherwise these pleats are very similar.

The sizes for the Inverted Pleat in store are: width 120 cm, 180 cm, 240 cm, 300 cm length 213 cm, 221 cm (Spotlight)

Please note that this style is being phased out in the stores, you can get it custom made.

OVERLAP arm on a track (The top fabric will overlap the one behind so there will be less light shining through).

RETURN back to the wall on a rod set.

The stack back is the area past the window where the curtains will hang when they are open.

See how the fabric forms into a neat half tube shape when the curtain is opened.

Inverted pleat on a store bought TRACK.

Custom made inverted pleats on a custom made track.

It is sold as an adjustable heading, which can lead people to believe that they can stretch the heading out wider than what is recommended. This is a very common mistake.

It is important to allow enough fullness for the curtains to look right, aim for at least 2- 2.2 times the window width, for thin sheer fabrics allow 2.5 times the window.

If you are using a track, use a corded track, you will then have more control over the opening and closing of the curtain.

This is the information that is on the back of a store bought pencil pleat Packet:

The first column is the range of width the curtain can cover, if you would like to work it out at exactly 2 x the window it is

better to use the second column, this is the actual width of the material in the package.

Width 80 -140 cm                          120 cm size window x 2 =  240 cm

Width 140 – 220 cm                       180 cm size window x 2 = 360 cm

Width 220 – 270 cm                       240 cm size window x 2 = 480 cm

width 270 – 340 cm                        300 cm size window x 2 = 600 cm

width 340 – 410 cm

Lengths: 160 cm, 170 cm, 213 cm, 221 cm , 250 cm, 270 cm (not every range has these exact sizes).

This heading can be a lot of work on a larger window.

To make your store-bought pencil pleat curtains look fabulous you need to put some time and effort into dressing

your curtains.

Here are some tips:
– Iron your curtains, read the care instructions so that you have your iron on the correct heat setting and iron the correct side.
– Pull the strings, arrange the pleats evenly so that the curtain is the correct width for your window
(make sure you tie off one end first so that you don’t pull the strings out), for a neater result gather the excess of the strings

to the outside of each curtain.

– Also include the returns to give you a neat finish on each side of the curtains.

– To support the pleat use a hook every 5th/6th pocket in the heading tape.

– Hang them up and then train your curtains into even folds to make them look good.

– IMPORTANT: Be sure to tidy up ALL strings for safety purposes. WARNING: Curtain and blind cords have caused the death

of young children and must be installed so that they are not a strangulation hazard. You must follow the installation

  instructions carefully.

You can buy this style in the magic drape from Spotlight and as a finished curtain from different stores around Perth.

How to use a pencil pleat curtain on a track:

4. EYELET CURTAIN

The eyelet curtain is very user-friendly, It has a good drape, it stacks back well, it glides easily across the rod and eyelet curtains can also take a patterned fabric well.

It is very easy to install, See my blog which has tips to help you do it correctly

If I have any complaints about this style it will be that you have to arrange the pleats evenly when you open and close your curtains.

It is a great style for windows up to 340 cm in width.

This heading does not take up a lot of stack back space, keep this in mind when you hang it.

There are three ways in which the Eyelet heading is available:

1. Magic Drape ( Spotlight)

The Magic drape is a curtain that is continuous in width and already has a heading on it but you must sew up the hems yourself,

you buy the number of metres that you need for your window.

length: 230 cm, 235 cm, 240 cm, 250 cm and 260 cm depending on different brands

I am also happy to sew up the hems for you, custom hems gives you a custom look.

To organise this you will need to:

– Call or text me on 0437 939 266 and ask me when I can do the work

– Measure your window width

– choose a magic drape with enough length, 235 cm and over so that you can have a decent hem in it

– Ask the staff at the store to work out your fabric requirements

– Bring it to me

– Payment and pick it up when ready

2. Ready-Made (Spotlight, Freedom, Curtain Wonderland, Bunnings, etc).

You can also buy it in a ready-made, sizes depend on the different brands.

Ready-made widths are 120 cm, 140 cm, 165 cm, 200 cm each, this is the actual panel size, they can be sold individually, if so

you will need to buy two packets, keep an eye on this.

They can be great for use on smaller windows or as side drapes, length 221-223 cm or 250 cm.

Or otherwise 80-140 cm, 140-220 cm, 220-270 cm, 270-340 cm, 340-410 cm a pair, this is the range of width it can cover.

Lengths: 223 cm (standard length) or 250 cm (length alterations might be needed for a standard height ceiling).

The fullness I like for this heading is 1.8 times the window.

Because this heading does not need rings on the rod you can buy the rod in separate components (rod, 3 brackets, finials).

Usually it is still cheaper to buy a rod set.

Buy the rod in the 19-25 mm diameter thickness as the eyelet looks skimpy on a 16 mm diameter rod.

3. Custom Made

If you would like custom made curtains in any of these styles call me for a free measure and quote.

Eyelet curtains can ONLY be put on a ROD.

5. S WAVE CURTAINS

Custom made S Wave sheer curtains on a track with roller blinds

behind.

Custom made S Wave in an uncoated fabric.

S Wave Curtains are ultra-modern, they are usually made in a sheer fabric which is continuous in width, which means there will be no vertical seaming.

This style is great for very wide windows as it stacks up very neatly.

It takes up more stack back space than a pinch pleat curtain, (usually a fourth of the total track measurement),

most of the time that will not matter because the curtain will stay in a closed position especially if it is in a sheer fabric like the example above on the left, if you are using a block out fabric allow for extra stack back.

The latest trend is to have roller blinds fitted in the window recess which give privacy and block out from the sun and to have Sheer S Wave Curtains to finish the look.

(if you need more insulation in your home use a block out s wave curtain instead).

Freedom recently brought out the first S Wave curtains available in-store, with single or double tracks, the tracks are not corded.

The curtains come in a sheer or block out fabric, use separately or together as a double layer.

Width 140 cm, 180 cm, 220 cm, 280 cm, 360 cm length 280 cm. They come in a one way draw only.

Spotlight has a range of S wave curtains now, single track, not corded, in a sheer or block out fabric.

Width 140 cm, 180 cm, 210 cm, 240 cm Length 250 cm. They come in a centre close only.

Both carry tracks to match these sizes.

Call me if you like me to alter the length of these curtains, installations can also be organised,

TRACKS

Using a track results in a more streamlined effect, the track has overhead support brackets so it can go a wider distance than a rod.

Store bought tracks come in these sizes:
122-213 cm, 167-305 cm, 180-300 cm, 213-396 cm, 280-500 cm.

Curtain wonderland, 63-114 cm,114-205 cm, 160-297, 205-388 cm in a hand drawn track.

Custom made tracks will not have a join, a store-bought track will be extendable so will have a join.

Get a corded track to help keep the fabric clean and to have more control over the curtain.

Custom made tracks can also come with automation.

If you have a corner or bay window it is best to get a custom made track, that way the curtain will hang properly in the space.

Custom made tracks are more expensive but it is totally worth the money you put into it.

Custom made tracks give your treatment a beautifully finished look, call me if you would like me to give you a free measure and quote for custom made tracks, installation is also available.

ROD SETS

Rod sets are designed to be put on show and are part of your overall display.

A rod set comes with a rod, rings, 3 brackets and 2 finials.

If you want a certain colour or style have a look on the internet, go to the image page for curtain rod sets.

Spotlight has a good range of rod sets, from 29-32 mm, 22-25 mm,19-22 mm and 16 mm in diameter (chunky to thin in size)

most of their rod sets are extendable, the standard length sizes are mainly 120-210 cm, 165-300 cm, some of the newer styles go

up to 365, 400 cm.

You can also buy rod components separately (rods, brackets, rings, finials), 16 mm and 19 mm diameter,

150, 200, 250, 300 cm in length.

Curtain Wonderland also has some lovely rod sets, different thicknesses.

The rings are not included in their sets, with one set you also have to buy the finials separately.

Sizes 120-210 cm, 165-300 cm, 220-400 cm.

If it is possible support the join of an extendable rod set on the centre bracket, if you have the join along the track where the rings go then the rings can get hooked on the join, this is very annoying if you draw the curtains every day.

The extendable rod sets have a thinner rod inside a thicker rod, most on the shelve rod sets are extendable, If you would like the rod

to be an even thickness all the way through you will need to read the packaging carefully to make sure it is not extendable

or buy the rod components separately.

Make sure you tighten the screws that keep the rod in place because the centre join can easily come undone and then the rod will fall down every time you draw your curtains.

Wood rod sets come in these sizes:
33 mm diameter, length 150 cm, 200 cm, 250 cm, 300 cm, 350 cm..

You can buy rod sets in the stores that extends up to 400 cm but the widest ready made pinch pleat curtain for sale only goes up to

320 cm, the reason being that the rod needs to be supported every 150 cm-175 cm otherwise the rod could sag.

This is especially true for a heavier curtain or a lined curtain, you could perhaps use a sheer or a light eyelet curtain on a rod 4 m wide.

If you want to buy ready-made rod sets for a very wide window then you can join the sets, but you will need to use multiple panels,

(see the pictures above) make sure you have a bracket every 150 cm -200 cm. consider the weight of the curtain and the thickness of the rod. The thinnest rod of 16 mm diameter needs a support every 150 cm (only use this diameter rod with a sheer curtain), thicker rods can go a wider distance.

Make sure every rod join is supported by a bracket, you can use a pole joiner with some rod sets for extra stability.

Multiple panels may work on some windows.

For the overall look and support of the curtain it is important to match the curtains to the rod, use light weight rods for lighter curtains and thicker rods or custom made tracks to support heavier curtains.

Where to get your rod sets from:

If you would like them right away check out Spotlight or curtain wonderland, IKEA and other outlets.

PELMETS

Design benefits of a pelmet:

– The pattern of the fabric is shown to its best effect.

– If you are using a ready made track you can cover it with a pelmet for a more finished look.

– It is great for insulating a room.

– It can give you better window coverage for blocking out the light.

Join in the right spot supported by the centre bracket.

READY MADE BLINDS (IN-STORE OR ONLINE ONLY)…

ROLLER BLIND

The latest look in curtaining is installing a roller blind for privacy and blocking out the sun and then to use an S wave heading in a sheer curtain to add another layer to your decor.

Roller blinds are a perfect quick-fix solution for a new house, it solves your privacy issues and it blocks out the harsh sun, you can then always later on add block out or sheer curtains.

They works well in awkward or small windows and they are practical for a kitchen or bathroom window.

If you have the full sun in a window it can also give you added protection against the UV rays, protecting your curtains, flooring and furniture against fading.

There are many ready-made roller blinds on the market, some have a patterned look and others are block out,

You can also get a day and night roller blind which has a layer of sheer and a layer of fabric.

These are the sizes you can get in the ready made blinds:

width: 60 cm, 61 cm,  90 cm, 91 cm, 120 cm, 122 cm, 150 cm, 180 cm, 183 cm, 210 cm, 240 cm

length: 150 cm, 210 cm, 213 cm, 220 cm, 240 cm, 250 cm

There is one consideration you need to think of with roller blinds,  you will have a small gap on the two sides if you have an inside mount.

If you need it to be more block out e.g. in a bedroom you might like to have a curtain as an extra layer or perhaps you can do an outside mount or you can use some side drapes.

There are some new products coming on the market which have the roller blind running inside a panel on the sides, this ensures the blind to be completely block out.

Go online and have a look at the different ranges and sizes you can buy.

You can also do blinds to your window measurements on line, it will then get delivered to your house.

For custom made roller blinds call a blind company for a free measure and quote, they can then show you their full range of different blinds available, ask about the difference in quality and price between a cheaper blind fabric and a fabric that is made

VENETIAN BLIND

You can use the Venetian blind in the same way as the roller blind but it takes up more window space than a roller blind when it

is pulled up, for this reason, I would not use them in front of a sliding door, they can also collect more dirt/dust than a roller blind,

for this reason, I would not use them on a kitchen window.

It comes in an aluminium or wood finish.

You cannot alter An Aluminium Venetian blind yourself so get these custom made if you need an inside mount.

It comes in several different timbers colours.

VERTICAL BLIND

Vertical blinds are often used in new houses for instant privacy and block out from the sun.

They are easy to care for and you can now get vertical blinds without the cords at the bottom.

Practical for sliding doors.

The ready mades come in these sizes, width 180 cm, 210 cm, 240 cm.

Length 213 cm, they fit within the window recess.

PANEL TRACK SYSTEM

Panel track systems can be great to give you a modern look, it also shows of patterned fabric to it’s best advantage.

It can, however, take up a lot of stack backspace so it is not suitable if you want to maximize your view.

These are the ready-made sizes in the store:

4 channel track – width 200 cm, 5 channel track – width 250 cm, 6 channel track – width 3 m

Each panel size is, width 55 cm, length 240 cm (it will need to be altered if you want it to fit within the window recess).

FABRICS

Block out fabrics have a layer of polyester foam sprayed onto it, which has a various degree of blackout,

1, 2, 3, 4  pass, the more layers it has the more block out it becomes.

These fabrics are suitable to be made into curtains.

The extra coating can be great for extra insulation keeping your house cooler in summer and warmer in winter.

Uncoated fabrics are nice for a see-through look, use them with a blind for privacy or get them sewn up with a lining for a softer

look than a block out fabric.

When you choose your fabric have a feel of it, be aware that if the fabric is very stiff it will not drape well, look for a more

supple fabric.

I have a range of fabrics which I can show you if you would like a free measure and quote.

Curtain Drop

A drop is a measurement from the top of the track to the desired length.

The fabric will be cut in drops and joined up vertically to make up the width that is needed.

The fabric comes in 120 cm, 135 cm, 145 cm or 150 cm widths in the stores.

Continuous Fabric

The fabric runs horizontally, you can get it cut at the width that you need, magic drape and sheers usually come this way.

Pattern Match Fabrics

You need to be aware that if you buy a fabric with a pattern match that it will cost more because of the pattern will need to be matched along the curtain.

Fabric Care

When you have a coated fabric be very careful about how you launder it. The coating can easily be damaged.

Read your fabric care label carefully and follow the instructions to a tee!!

Before you launder a fabric keep in mind that you will be removing some of the shine of the fabric. You may be able to spot clean

it or give it a vacuum. Check the care label.

If you are buying fabric from the store, ask the staff to print you out a fabric care label as it is important to have this information.

If possible get your fabric put on a roll, there is nothing more annoying than having large amounts of fabric that you have to iron

when the fabric is creased from folding, It is then also easier to store it away.

Some fabrics can also fade easily, keep an eye on the curtains that hang on a window with the full sun on it, you might need an

extra layer to protect your curtains, e.g. a blind, window tinting or roller shutters might be a good investment.

DRESSING YOUR WINDOW

It is important to spend a bit of time on dressing your window.

First unpack all your ready-made rods/tracks, read the instructions so you do the right job the first time.

To have a neater finish iron your curtains, read the care label for your curtains first to see what setting your

iron should be on (you can only iron coated fabrics on the fabric side).

The curtain will need to be hanged onto a rod or track which can have an overlap arm and a return, the curtains will need to be pleated into even folds and bound for several days, if you spend some time on it you can have great results.

CUSTOM MADE

You will not regret getting custom made curtains or blinds, as with most things custom made is still the best option, overall the curtains/blinds will fit your window perfectly, the overall look is superior and you won’t have any problems with the rods and tracks.

If you would like blinds then get a free measure and quote from a blind company and compare the price with the ready-made blinds,

have a think about whether it will be worth it to go ready-made.

It is easier to get custom made and with a sale on it can be more affordable, they will then also install.

All the blinds in the above examples can be custom made to fit your windows, some also have the option of an automation with a

remote control.

READY MADE

Plan your window with the correct information, write down your actual window size, choose a heading you like,

add extra measurements e.g. stack back etc, choose a rod set or track, keep an eye out for obstructions around the

window and make a plan of how you might deal with it.

When you go out to buy ready-made curtains try to look for quality, in the past, I have found that some curtains were sewn

up roughly, the hems were out and the grommets of the eyelet curtains were unevenly spaced, as with all things you get

what you pay for.

when you go out shopping for ready-made window coverings you need to be flexible, you will not always be able to get the colours or fabric thickness you like.

Recently I have decided to do alterations for ready-made curtains and I’m also now doing ready-made curtain installations,

Go to the alterations page for the pricelist, which is situated under the “more” heading.

I will be running a blog, check it out for additional articles about curtains.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to detail your inquiry by email and I will try to answer your

queries within 24 hours.

Curtain Style, Colour and Design

Watch your room instantly transform once you’ve found your perfect pick in our wide range of curtains and blinds. We’ve put together a curtain buying guide to help you choose the best curtain to suit your space and style. We’re proud to hold such a rich and diverse variety of curtains, from light and sheer materials to thick and fully lined blackout curtains. Sometimes it’s hard to pick between the bold and the subtle so, you might want to think about what mood you’re trying to set for each room. Think about how often the curtains will stay open and what effect it’ll have on your overall interior decoration.

Bold and bright curtains- Busy patterns and bright colours are ideal for communal areas such as the living room, kitchen curtains and bathroom; as the curtain is usually kept open, meaning the patterns and colours are not as visible as they would be if they were closed. When a heavily patterned curtain is closed it reveals the whole pattern which can sometimes seem repetitive and become overwhelming for a space like the bedroom. Our eyelet curtains look great in bold colours and patterns as the deep folds balance everything out perfectly.

Plain and subtle blinds- Ideal for spaces where the curtains are usually closed like the bedroom. It’s important to consider soft colours to reflect relaxation and tranquillity; this could be a simple pattern or a soothing colour. Try our neutral linen curtains or textured grey curtains for a harmonious freshness that will expand your room and a calming effect that will help you sleep peacefully. Check out our pencil pleat curtains featuring the signature pencil-like pleats for functional detail that will complement any décor.

Pencil pleat & deep pencil pleat

A valance is a piece of fabric that covers the curtain pole and track, for a decorative finish.

Watch our guide to measuring up

To ensure the best possible fit:

  • Take time to measure your window carefully
  • Decide whether you want your curtains to hang from a track or pole. You can find more information in our track and pole buying guide
  • Fit the track or pole before taking measurements, it should be positioned 15cm (6 inches) above the window and extend 15-20cm (6-8 inches) either side

Measuring width

Measure the total width of the track or pole (excluding the finials) – do not measure the window unless it is wall-to-wall.

Measuring length

Before measuring the length, decide whether you want your curtains to fall to the sill, below the sill or to the floor. We suggest that:

  • Sill length curtains finish 1.25cm (1/2 inch) above the sill
  • Curtains that fall below the sill finish 15cm (6 inches) below
  • Floor length curtains finish 1.5cm (1/2 inch) from the floor (although you can create a romantic, bohemian look by having them longer so that they trail on the floor)

Measuring curtains for tracks

Measure from the top of the track.

Measuring curtains for poles

Pencil pleat curtains: Measure from the eye – the small metal ring at the bottom of each curtain ring. This will prevent the pole or rings from being obscured by the curtain.

Tab top and eyelet curtains: Measure from the very top of the pole.

At-home estimating and fitting service

What are my delivery options?

We’ll deliver them for free when you spend over £50.

Setting the width: Pencil pleat curtains

Step 1. For pencil pleat curtains, measure the total length of the track or pole and divide by two to give the correct width for each curtain. If your curtains include part or half-widths, then position them at the outer edge of the window.

Step 2. Knot the three drawn cords on the inside curtain edge. Pull the three cords at the outside curtain edge at the same time and gather the curtain in even pleats to the desired width.

Step 3. Tie off the cord and wind any surplus cord on to the cord tidy provided. Do not cut the excess cord as you may need to let the pleats out to wash or dry clean your curtains.

Step 1. For pencil pleat curtains, insert the heading tape hooks into the top row of pockets to hang the curtain below the pole or track. Insert the hooks into the lower row of pockets for the heading to cover the track.

Step 2. Insert a hook at each end of the tape, then at approximately 8cm intervals across the curtain.

Step 3. Check you have the same number of hooks on each curtain as gliders or rings on your pole or track. Don’t forget to count the fixed end stop when counting the gliders on your track.

Step 1. These are delivered in the correct width, with hooks already inserted and adjusted to the height ordered.

Step 2. Check the hook position. If the hook position needs to be adjusted, it can be done by moving the hook down the slider from notch to notch. To raise the hook, move it down to the bottom of the slider until it comes off, then re-insert the hook on to the top of the slider and move it down to the desired position

Step 3. Check the curtain against the track or pole: we include additional pin hooks to insert at the end of each curtain to suit the track or pole.

Your curtains can be dusted or vacuumed with the upholstery brush attachment.

Ready-made curtains can be returned if unsuitable,

but please ensure you don’t pull the headings and keep all packaging and parts.

How to Measure for Curtains

Measuring for curtains is a simple task, but only if you know how. Our step by step guide will show you how to get all the appropriate measurements correctly. We have also included tips, advice and things to consider when you measure for curtains. E.g. the amount of ‘gather’ you want.

How to Measure for curtains:

Tips:
  • You should select and fit your track or pole (or curtain wire for nets), before taking any measurements for the length of your curtains. (You may not always be able to fit your track or pole, the exact height you would like. e.g. when trying to drill into a concrete lintel).
  • When you measure for curtains, always use a steel tape to take your measurements. (fabric or plastic type tape-measures tend to stretch over time and may give a false reading).
  • Every measurement you take, WRITE IT DOWN. 😉

Step 1: Measure for a New Curtain Pole or Track

(Please skip this step if there is an existing pole or track you intend to use.)

First we need to measure the inside width of the window recess. (Measure A)

Next, decide how far your curtains will over-hang the wall, each side of the window. This would normally be around 20cm (8 inches) each side and enables the curtains to open wider, allowing more daylight to enter the room. (Measure B)

Now add A + B + B. This will give us the length of the track or pole needed (C), excluding finals.

Step 2: Measure for Curtains Width

(If you skipped step 1, measure your track/pole (excluding finals), this will give you measurement (C).)

When you measure for curtains width, it is important to consider the ‘gather’.

To have curtains with a medium gather when closed, we take our track/pole measurement (C), multiply it by 1.5 then divide by 2. The result is the required width of Each curtain.

For curtains with full/normal gather when closed, measurement C would be the required width of Each curtain.

If you desire a heavy gather, multiply measurement C by 2.5 then divide by 2. Again, the result is the required width of Each curtain.

Ok, we’ve now established the width of our curtains. Here’s how we work out the length.

Step 3: Measure for Curtains Drop / Length

Before we can measure for curtains length, we need to decide whether our curtains will fall to the sill, below the sill or to the floor.

– Sill length curtains usually finish 1/2 inch (1.25cm) above the sill.

Curtains that fall below the sill usually finish 15cm (6 inches) below. This, of course, can be adjusted for personal preference.

For floor length curtains you should allow 1 inch (2.5cm) clearance to avoid dragging.

Now, with your track/pole fitted 6-8 inches (15-20cm) above the window recess, measure from the top edge of the track/pole to your chosen finished length.

  • For Tab-top and all types of pleated curtains, write down your measurement.
  • For Eyelet/Ring top curtains, write down your measurement and add 1.5 inches (3.5cm) (This is the distance from the inner edge of the eyelet to the top edge of the curtain).

Step 4: Important!

Sit down and relax with your favourite beverage!

Well… maybe you could put away your step ladder and tape first… I’ll leave that up to you.

Measuring for Ready Made Curtains

When you measure for curtains, and intend to buy ready made curtains, there are a few things to consider.

  • Ready made curtains are only available in certain sizes.
  • You may need to get them shortened which will add to the over-all cost.
  • The sizes quoted on the packaging are approximate measurements, NOT exact.
  • The quality of the fabric can often be rather poor. Especially when buying at greatly reduced prices.

Here is a list of the more common sizes available. The first number given is always the width. So curtains that are 117x137cm would have a width of 117cm, and a length of 137cm. Please remember when buying ready made curtains, the sizes given are approximate.

Standard Ready Made Curtain Sizes:

117x137cm (46×54″)
117x182cm (46×72″)
117x228cm (46×90″)

168x137cm (66×54″)
168x182cm (66×72″)
168x228cm (66×90″)

228x137cm (90×54″)
228x182cm (90×72″)
228x228cm (90×90″)

Measuring for Made to Measure Curtains

Are you measuring to get some Made to Measure Curtains..? – Did you know, some of the smaller, independent curtain makers, will make curtains from fabric you provide..? – This can work out much more cost effective. You can choose the exact fabric you want, at a price that your happy with. The big stores (I won’t name them but you can probably think of a few.) ask you to choose from their selection of fabric. That’s not always a bad thing, but you can’t shop around for the best price, and your limited to what they have in stock.

To help you work out how much fabric would be needed for made to measure curtains, we have put together a ‘Curtain fabric calculator‘. A useful little gadget that can use your measurements to calculate the amount of fabric required to make your curtains.

Comments welcome!

If you found our ‘Measure for Curtains’ guide useful, or can think of something we’ve missed, please let us know. We appreciate your feedback!

STANDARD SIZE PENCIL PLEAT CURTAIN

In a pencil pleat curtain the fabric is gathered into pleats with a 7 cm wide curtain. The tape is fitted at the top of the curtain (at the back) and it has 2 rows of pockets to chose from and to place hooks in while hanging the curtain.

The bottom of the curtain is finished with an overlock seam. Standard size curtain is supplied with iron-on hemming tape to allow quick and easy adjustment of the drop of the curtain without professional help. Simply use the tape and hot iron to hem at the required drop.

The hem on the sides of the curtain is 2 cm wide.

MADE TO MEASURE PENCIL PLEAT CURTAIN

In a pencil pleat curtain the fabric is gathered into pleats with a 7 cm wide curtain. The tape is fitted at the top of the curtain (at the back) and it has 2 rows of pockets to chose from and to place hooks in while hanging the curtain.

The bottom of the curtain is hemmed. The width of the hem depends on the drop of the curtain:

– for curtains up to 200 cm long the width of the hem is 5 cm

– for curtains over 200 cm long the width of the hem is 10 cm

The bottom of the curtains is also finished with weights in the bottom corners of the curtain, to improve the hang and keep the curtain in position.

The hem on the sides of the curtain is 2 cm wide.

The width of the curtain made to measure is the width before gathering. Please allow extra fabric for gathering.

Curtains over 130 cm in width are made out of two or more pieces of fabric. This is due to the standard width of fabrics (140cm) available from fabric manufacturers. This is a standard practice in the industry, the patterns are matched across the pieces of fabric and this does not affect the quality or the look of the finished curtain. This may not apply to a small number of fabrics that are supplied in rolls that are 280 cm wide.

Pluses : The color corresponds to

Choosing the size of curtains: width, length, assembly

Contents of the article

When choosing curtains, it is important to decide not only on the model, color and type of fabric, but also on the size of the panel, which is sometimes much more difficult. Correctly sized curtains can highlight all the advantages of the room, while too wide, long or short can ruin even the most ideal and stylish room. Therefore, before going to the store for curtains or when buying fabric for them, you need to clearly know what size curtains you need.

Taking measurements

Naturally, the process of determining the optimal size of curtains begins with taking the necessary measurements. So, the main data that we need to get is the width and length of future curtains, and all other data, such as assembly, etc., are then calculated based on this data.

It is worth noting that it is already worth taking measurements after the cornice has been selected and installed. The cornices are different, they can be attached to the wall or ceiling, but in any case, the length of the cornice should exceed the width of the window. If this is a bedroom or other restroom, then you can fix the cornice in general to the entire width of the walls, effectively emphasizing the window area. In other rooms, the cornice should be 20-30 cm larger than the window opening, so that the curtains can move, clearing the way for the sun’s rays, the exception is the kitchen, where, as a rule, only a translucent curtain hangs, and the length of the cornice is almost the same as the width of the window …Please note that now there are curtain rods with adjustable length : if desired and necessary, they can be made a little shorter or longer.

It is desirable, of course, before making measurements , already decide on the model of curtains , since the calculation of the length and width of the required fabric will depend on the type of fabric, fastening, the number of layers of window decoration.

  • The width of the curtains can be measured with a tape measure or a soft measuring tape from the first fastening to the last .
  • The length of the curtains is measured from the curtain rod or from the selected fastening elements, such as rings, to the mark you need.

Determine the width of the curtain

So, we measured the distance from the left hook to the right one, but the figure obtained does not mean the required width of the curtain, because in this case it will only hang loosely. In the vast majority of cases, drapery is needed, but how lush and voluminous it will be depends on the nuances of a separate room.

It is worth noting in advance that you need to be especially careful with the drapery:

  • so, spacious bedrooms and living rooms will only benefit from lush, intricate draperies , which will give the room lightness and airiness,
  • but the kitchens are fast in size , offices, etc. . it is better to decorate with curtains with a slightly noticeable drapery .
  • So, if you need a very light drapery and barely noticeable waves, then the length of the cornice can be multiplied by 1.5 or 2, and you can choose curtains or fabric for them taking into account the obtained value.
  • If more lush folds are welcome, then the length of the cornice can be safely multiplied by 2.5-3.

Remember that this rule works no matter how many panels are used to decorate the window – one or two. But in the latter case, another 15 cm is added to the calculated length of the curtains, so that when the canvases are closed, they can overlap, creating a spectacular darkening.

The many years of experience of the craftsmen in sewing curtains gave rise to the development of approximate values of the width of the fabric cloth depending on the length of the curtain rod .You can use the rule described above, or you can take into account the following data:

  • for short cornices, the length of which is less than 1.4 m (such are often present in kitchens), the width of the curtains will be equal to the length of the cornice. Small windows, as a rule, are found in small rooms in which folds will be inappropriate, which is why curtains or simple curtains are selected here without draperies;
  • with a cornice length of 1.5-2 m , curtains are chosen 1.5 times wider than the cornice;
  • if the length of the cornice reaches 2-2.8 m , then this value can be safely multiplied by 2 and choose curtains of the appropriate width;
  • eaves length 2.8-3.4 m can be safely multiplied by 2.5, because with such a large window opening, abundant draperies will look very appropriate and give the necessary lightness;
  • with curtain rod length of 4 m and more must be multiplied by a factor of 2.5-3.As a result, the gathering factor itself shows how much the width of the fabric is greater than the length of the cornice.

As a rule, the size of the room and the windows are proportional, so such simple tips and calculations will help you without any problems determine the right curtain width to make the room look neat and comfortable.

Please note that sometimes the curtain width depends on the selected models. So, for example, abundant draperies are appropriate for translucent curtains, but on massive dense curtains there should be folds, but they may already be less voluminous, so here you should rely on your own taste, or use proven data on the gathering factor for each type of fabric.

So, for curtain fabric this coefficient is 1.7, for a veil and organza with a pattern – 2, and for a thin organza without a pattern – 3.

Width and length of Roman blinds

The width of the lambrequin corresponds to the length of the cornice , therefore, if you decide to decorate the window with such an element, then it will be unnecessary to use any correction factors and carry out additional calculations.

Width of Roman, roller blinds, Japanese blinds

Separately, it is worth mentioning such types of blinds as Roman, roller blinds, Japanese blinds and other similar designs.Roller blinds and roman blinds, as a rule, are placed directly in the window opening, so their width corresponds to the width of the window, measured from glazing bead to glazing bead. Sometimes roller blinds are placed on the wall above the window, then their width should be 10-15 cm larger than the window opening, completely covering the window and slightly going beyond the boundaries in order to hide the residents from the rays of light as much as possible.

The width of the blinds is chosen exactly according to the width of the window opening, and Japanese curtains, consisting of many panels, can go far beyond the window, or can cover only the transparent part without going beyond its borders. It all depends on the design solution and the characteristics of the room, its area, etc.

Determine the length of the curtain

The length of the curtains is an even more important parameter than their width. Here you need not only to measure everything correctly, but also to imagine in advance what length of curtains will be more appropriate . The choice depends on the functional purpose of the room, as well as on its features: area, height, illumination, etc. If this is a room with low ceilings , then long curtains may be inappropriate, the exception is translucent tulle with a vertical stripe. In kitchens, in most cases, long curtains are also not suitable: they will interfere and clutter up already predominantly cramped rooms. But if the kitchen is spacious, and there is a lot of free space near the window, there is no stove or sink, there is a dining area, then you can experiment with curtains on the floor. Rooms such as bedroom , children’s room and living room require the use of long curtains that will cover the entire window opening and fall to the floor.

So, when you have decided on where the curtains will end, it is time to take measurements.Measure the length of from the eaves to the floor or to the windowsill or to any desired point. Please note that you need to think over the curtain fastening system in advance, and if these are hooks or rings, you will need to measure the length of the curtains from them, and not from the cornice.

In living rooms and bedrooms , many experts recommend choosing the length of the curtains so that there is still 3-4 cm left to the floor – for reasons of comfort and convenience. If the window decoration will consist of of several layers , then curtains should be longer than the curtains by a few centimeters in order to completely cover their edge.

Many apartments cannot boast of a flat floor or ceiling, in which case it is better to measure the length of the curtain on the left, right and in the middle of , and then use either the average or the maximum value, depending on the deviation present.

Even if you plan to choose curtains to the floor for room , it is better to follow the practice of professional seamstresses and measure the distance from the cornice to the window sill and from the window sill to the floor .When you come to the store and start choosing a certain model, there is a high degree of probability that you will like cascading curtains, with tiebacks or other elements. In this case, you will know for sure all the parameters of your window opening.

The length of the lambrequin can be anything: it all depends on your preferences and the interior features of the room.

If you buy fabric for sewing curtains , then to the obtained data on the length and width you need to add 5 cm each, which will be spent on hemming and processing.

There are models of curtains that effectively fall on the floor : if you want to hang the same ones at home, then another 20-50 cm is added to the measured length to form a spectacular wave.

If you want to sew curtains with your own hands and choose fabric with a pattern , and the curtains, for example, will consist of two parts, then you need to correctly combine the pattern. If the ornament is repetitive, then you need to measure that part of it that is constantly duplicated. For example, it will be 70 cm, and add the result to the final value of the length of the fabric.

Another important point: now widespread artificial fabrics , which are very durable in use and almost do not shrink when washing, so if you want to sew curtains from them, you should not make any additional allowances for shrinkage. If in the fabric there are more than 60% of natural fibers in the fabric, then the likelihood that it will shrink a little after washing increases, therefore fabric in this case is taken with a margin of – by about 10%.

Calculation example

When all the necessary measurements have been taken, it is time to calculate the width and length of curtains or fabrics for them.If the resulting width of the window area is 2 m, and the length is 2.7 m, and it is necessary to purchase curtains and drapes, then you can safely use the assembly factor (KC) = 2 and then we get that the width should be 4 m for a given length.

If you want the window to be decorated with original and unique curtains that are not on sale in the store, then you need to buy the required amount of fabric to sew them . So, how much fabric is needed for curtains and curtains for our conditional window?

The standard width of a roll of translucent tulle is 2.8 m , which should be enough for a standard window height, so the question of length remains resolved. As for the width, for a given window width and the selected COP, fabrics 2 * 2 = 4 m will be required. But since it leaves 5 cm for the allowances on the sides, the total amount of fabric will be 4.1 m.

Curtain width fabric is usually 1.4, 2.8 or 3.0 meters. It is good if the width of the canvas ideally matches the length of the window opening, but it may be that the width is insufficient, and then you will have to measure the fabric along and use several canvases to close the window opening. Here it is important not to forget about the combination of the pattern and the length of the rapport – a repeating element of the ornament. In this case, you can sew between a special canvas of fabric, or maybe just make curtains in two parts.

The calculation in this case will be as follows :

amount of fabric = ((height of the window opening + allowance) * number of canvases) + rapport * (number of canvases – 1)

If the width of the window is 2 m and KS = 2, and the width of the fabric in a roll is 1.4 m, then for the manufacture of curtains, for example, you will need 3 canvases: 1.4 * 3 = 4.2 m, with a rapport value of 0.35 m, we get the following data:

amount of fabric = ((2 , 7 + 0.2) * 3) + 0.35 * 2 = 9.4 m

If after cutting the fabric and sewing curtains there is a lot of fabric left, and this may be when a large pattern was selected, then from leftovers can be sewn curtain hooks or small pillows on the sofa. When curtains and other textiles in the room are made in the same style, this gives a special effect to the room.

The most common models of curtains are easy to sew on your own, but if you doubt your professionalism or are planning to decorate the window with an elaborate model, then it is better to resort to the services of specialists.

In conclusion

The length and width of the curtains are important parameters of window decoration, which must be given no less importance than fabric, pattern and color. The correctly selected size will decorate the room and make it more comfortable, therefore, before going to the store for ready-made curtains or for fabric for them, you need to take all the necessary measurements from the window opening, write them down and start from them when choosing.

sizes, fasteners, materials, textures and types of fabric

When choosing curtains for windows, they usually first pay attention to the color and design, and then to the technical characteristics. We propose, first of all, to deal with the technical side of the issue. Then you can immediately consider only suitable options and not waste time.

We have been developing and manufacturing home textiles for 5 years.During this time, we have accumulated a decent baggage of knowledge on what curtains are and what properties they have. We also studied the requests and reviews of our customers, which helped us identify the main problems in the selection and operation of curtains. Based on all this, our selection guide was compiled.

We will not consider all types of curtains, but only those that are presented in our catalog – straight to the floor. Since we know reliably and succinctly only about what we are doing ourselves. This type is also called classic, curtains and curtains. They are usually placed in the bedroom, living room or hall, but sometimes they can be seen in the kitchen, balcony and other rooms in the house.

In the guide, we will analyze in detail the following questions:

  • How to choose the size and what options do we have? What comes first: cornice or curtain? How to take measurements and what to consider?
  • How are our curtains fixed? About our mounts and their installation methods.
  • What curtain materials do we use and why? About synthetic base and blended fabrics.
  • What are the textures, types of fabrics and patterns? Our examples. About jacquard, blackout, embroidery and others

As a result, we will form a checklist for choosing curtains and our own recommendations that will help you quickly and confidently navigate the catalog. A checklist will be waiting for you at the end of the guide.

How to choose the size?

You need to measure the size of the curtains after installing the cornice. Its configuration determines which window design options suit you.Ceiling and wall cornice can consist of several rows for the simultaneous installation of tulle and curtains, or it can have one rod, string or bus.

Curtains
Naturel hooks are installed on a string cornice.

If the curtain rod is installed

Then everything is quite simple. We measure the length of the cornice and the distance from the floor to the cornice.

If there is no curtain rod

Then you need to first perform several points:

Decide on the desired type of window decoration

Want ceiling-to-floor curtains? Or are you planning to cover the entire space from wall to wall with curtains? And if you just need to close the window, how much? Here the choice depends on taste preferences, ceiling height, room dimensions.

There are several standard rules for the location to consider:

  • If the length of the curtain rod without tips is at least 30 cm wider than the window on each side, it will be convenient to move the curtains to the sides, letting in more natural light into the room, and when the windows are closed, the gaps along the edges will be minimal.

  • Optimum height of the wall cornice: 1/3 of the distance from the ceiling to the upper window opening. In other words, we divide this distance into 3 parts. The location of the cornice on the upper part closer to the ceiling will visually increase the space.

Select and install a suitable curtain rod

Ceiling, wall, hidden or rod, string, profile and so on.

Next, we measure the length of the cornice and the distance from the floor to the cornice, respectively

Important! Take measurements on the left and right side of the window. No one can boast of perfectly flat walls and floors. It will be unpleasant to find the skew in the future. Pay attention to the load that can withstand the placement of the cornice and the cornice itself. If you plan to hang heavy curtains, then you should take care of additional reinforcement of the wall / ceiling and choose a cornice made of durable material.

Dimensions are, what’s next? And then we also build on the design preferences. The curtains can hang close to the floor or lie flat on the floor. They can hang in tight folds or in a light wave.

Select the length of curtains

If you want the curtains to hang, then subtract 1-3 cm from the previous measurements in length. If you are not sure about the evenness of the floor, then it is better to retreat 3-4 cm. The larger the indentation, the less the canvas will collect dust.

If you want the curtains to lie on the floor, then, on the contrary, add 20-30 cm to the length. In this case, also take into account the density of the curtains material – the lighter and softer the fabric, the better it drapes.

Curtain canvas
New Pink is 1-2 cm above floor level.
Curtain canvas
Naturel below floor level. The fabric is neatly gathered into a ball.

Select the curtain width

In terms of width, allow for extra fabric for pleats.

If you do not plan to hang the curtain with folds, but just want to close the window, then the total width of the curtains should be 60-70 cm greater than the width of the window. So, if you wish, you can completely curtain the window without gaps along the edges and between the curtains.

If you plan to form a large number of folds, then for dense fabrics the total width should be 2-2.5 times larger, light canvases 3 times wider than the window or the distance that you want to close with curtains.

Having indicators of the width and height of the desired curtains, you can apply for the services of individual tailoring in the studio or buy ready-made ones.

Ready made curtains
Boho with mount, size: 200×270 cm.
In our store there are ready-made curtains of the following sizes (WxL):

Manufacturers try to make ready-made curtains as long as possible, taking into account technical restrictions, pricing policy and demand. We are one of those. On an industrial scale, we are able to offer this or that design at an optimal price and you do not have to choose a fabric, choose a fastener, or sew edges. But you may have to cut the canvases to length or fold them using adhesive tape. The latter option is only suitable for lightweight fabrics.

The type of attachment of the future curtain to the cornice can also affect the choice of size. Read more about fasteners below.

How to fix the curtains? Dealing with fastening methods

There are many types of mounts on the market. For our curtains, we use two at once: a drawstring and a curtain tape. The reason for this is its versatility. Regardless of the eaves and the method of attachment to it, the canvas can be hung in one of the ways. Passing the cornice through the “curtain pocket” or with the help of hooks, hooking the curtain tape on the loops.

Drawstring fastening. A cornice with a diameter of not more than 3.5 cm is threaded through the curtain “pocket”.

Fastening with curtain tape 7 cm wide with hinges in 3 rows. Hooks are threaded through the loops on the tape.Depending on the choice of the row of hinges, you can slightly adjust the height of the curtains up to 4 cm, hide or open the fasteners. Place the crochet hooks in each loop at a distance of 3.5 cm or by joining the loops in increments to create drapery.

Fasteners for curtain tape may be different. Plastic or metal hooks or clips. For thicker curtains, it is better to use metal curtains to avoid deformation of the mounts.

When attaching the curtains to “crocodiles” by the edge of the fabric with the curtain tape, the fabric does not deform over time.

Another plus of the curtain tape is the ability to easily model folds. With the help of longitudinal threads on the tape, you can fix the width of the canvas, creating pencil folds. Pull the threads, evenly straighten the folds and secure the result with a knot. This method allows you to create neat folds.

What curtain materials do we use and why?

We chose polyester for our curtains, because its properties are best manifested in everyday life.Depending on the method of processing the thread and the presence of natural fibers in the composition, curtains have certain properties, tactile sensations and visual effect. We divide the composition of the canvas into two categories:

100% polyester curtains. Durable and easy to clean. There may be different textures. Blackout curtains are capable of blocking light.
Cotton-blend curtains. Composition: 15% cotton; 85% polyester. Polyester fibers in the composition make the product durable and easy to care for, cotton gives a natural texture and softness

Linen-added curtains. Composition: 20% – linen; 80% polyester. Polyester fibers (polyester) in the composition make the product durable, easy to maintain and neutralize the natural rigidity of flax. At the same time, flax retains its antibacterial properties and creates a natural texture.

As you can see, all of our window curtains are based on polyester. The fabric does not shrink after the first wash. Caring for them is simple and involves hand or machine wash at temperatures up to 30 ° C. Cloths can be ironed at temperatures up to 110 ° C.We do not recommend tumble drying and bleaching. Dry cleaning is acceptable in delicate mode.

Polyester is popularly endowed with negative characteristics. We understand how the material behaves in everyday life:

Pluses

  • Strong and durable fabric, will not deform after many washes;
  • Resistant to light and temperature. Such curtains do not fade or fade, even in the sunniest room when using high-quality dyes;
  • The fabric is dirt-resistant, which means you don’t have to wash it often;
  • The material is lighter than natural fabrics, which means it creates less stress on the cornice;
  • The fabric imitates different textures well;
  • Easy to clean.Washes easily, dries quickly and hardly wrinkles. Wet curtains can be immediately hung on the window, they will straighten themselves under their own weight;
  • Does not roll off;
  • Polyester does well with light absorption. Curtains made of 100% polyester fibers darken the room better than curtains with a natural composition of similar textures.

Cons

  • Has a synthetic sheen depending on the type of fabric;
  • Property to accumulate static electricity.

The pros are irreplaceable in everyday life and are able to neutralize the cons.

Textures, types of fabric and patterns

Depending on the methods of processing the threads, you can get fabrics of different types with a certain texture and property.

Jacquard is a type of fabric in which the pattern is formed by weaving threads. Allows you to create holistic, embossed images on fabric by alternating threads of different textures, colors and combining different types of weaving. The fabric can be made of threads of the same color, but most often different colors are used, which gives the picture contrast and volume. The reverse side of jacquard fabric is the inversion of the front side (according to the principle of positive and negative in photography). This is a complex and expensive type of fabric. In addition to its aesthetic and tactile qualities, it is particularly durable.

Example of a jacquard patterned curtain

Printing
The most common way to apply an image to fabric. With proper care, the paint does not fade after washing and does not fade in the sun. Our catalog contains both multi-color curtains with detailed patterns and geometric prints applied in gold and silver paint.

Example of printed curtains

Velvet
Thick fabric with a short pile, which makes it especially pleasant to the touch. Velvet has the ability to partially absorb noise and light. In our catalog, these curtains are presented with an embossed pattern.

Embroidery
The pattern is applied on embroidery equipment. The decorative element does not deteriorate after washing.

Example of curtains with embroidery

Embossing
The drawing is applied using a cliché under a high temperature. Thanks to this, the relief is preserved after many washes.

Example of embossed curtains

Lurex
Metallic thread penetrating the fabric, gives the canvas a shine.Sometimes lurex is added to embroidery threads.

Example of curtains with lurex

Linen and cotton blend
The canvas has a pleasant tactile feeling and natural texture of threads. The curtains in our catalog are made from recycled materials.

Example of curtains with the addition of natural materials

Blackout (dimout)
In the production of fabric, a complex weave of three threads is used. The outer layers of the fabric remain decorative, the inner layer consists of black threads of flame retardant polyester fiber, thanks to which the fabric practically does not transmit light. Such curtains are denser and can affect the temperature of the room, which makes them more expensive to manufacture. The light blocking ability does not affect the decorative effect of the curtains. Pattern and texture can be different. The reverse side of the curtains remains aesthetically pleasing. Dark threads are invisible.

Example of blackout curtains

From a technical point of view, the blackout curtains of our store would be more correctly called – dimout. The difference from blackout is the absence of a rubberized backing on the back of the canvas, which has a 100% light-blocking function. Our curtains block light by 80%. But, since the term dimout is not familiar to most people, we still call the curtains blackout. Both curtains are a good option for those who like to sleep longer in the dark.

Our blackout curtains (dimout), with a snug fit to the window, partially transmit light and partially suppress noise. The color of the curtains in the light does not change, in contrast to curtains without a light-blocking function. In the photo curtains
Oasis.

Depending on the density of the fabric and the way the thread is woven, curtains without light-blocking properties allow light to pass through and can even change shade to light. In the photo curtains

We have a separate
article about blackout curtains. We will tell you why it is good to sleep in complete darkness.

To consolidate knowledge, we compiled a final checklist for the selection of ready-made curtains:

  1. The cornice is already installed: we take into account its dimensions and load.The cornice is not installed: we decide on the type of curtains, we select the configuration of the cornice, choose the location, make measurements, install;

  2. We select the length of the curtains relative to the floor;

  3. Determine the width of the curtains and the number of canvases;

How long should the curtains be? How to choose the width and height of the curtains from the floor?

When choosing curtains, many modern consumers are guided mainly by color, pattern, less often by texture, forgetting that the design of window textiles is also its length and width. At the same time, it is almost impossible to choose such an accessory correctly without the correct size calculation, therefore, we will consider what the parameters of the product should be.

Height classification

It will not be entirely correct to say that there are standard sizes of curtains in height – after all, their length directly depends on the height of the ceilings.

On the other hand, there are norms defined by designers as to how far down the curtain can go.

  • The shortest and therefore inexpensive curtains are limited to the window sill, or rather, they do not even reach it by about 1-2 cm. This solution is not used in small rooms, since it seems to cut the vertical. But on the other hand, in the assembled version and in light colors, this idea is perfect for a Mediterranean-style kitchen or dining room.
  • An interesting, but relatively rare option is the use of ready-made kits that will cover the window sill with a margin of 10-20 cm.The solution can be interesting to fit into almost any interior, however, there are many restrictions for just this length – for example, the window sill should not be used, and no electrical appliances should be placed next to the window, not to mention the stove.
  • One of the most popular solutions are curtains, in which the height from the floor is limited to only 5-7 cm. it really is.However, for standard apartments of an old building with a height of 240-250 cm, this solution is quite appropriate.
  • A standard of length is also in demand, which is known as “to the floor”, although in fact the minimum distance from the floor within 1.5-2 cm is usually maintained even here. Many people like this solution due to its thoroughness – such a design can often be found in the hall, and the chosen length usually assumes the complete closure of the opening in width.

With the help of such long curtains, small irregularities in the floor that occur along the baseboards are often masked.

  • Extra long curtains with folds, which partially lie on the floor, look the most gorgeous – the oversize of length can be from 10 to 30 cm, and the total length of the curtain, respectively, is 3 meters in low rooms, and up to 4 meters in high rooms. It should be borne in mind that it is inconvenient to take care of such an accessory, because it quickly becomes dirty and requires constant care, including washing and laying on the floor. However, such a solution is optimal for the bathroom, because it allows you to protect the space from splashing water.

As for the tulle, it is almost always appropriate, and in all the described options, except for the first, since its length should coincide with the length of the main curtain.

How to determine the correct length of the curtain fabric?

Today, it is very common to abandon ready-made kits in favor of individual sewing of a product from a fabric chosen by the customer himself. It should be understood that it will be problematic to increase the missing length – at least the original idea will be lost, and few people will also want to overpay for a significant amount of excess fabric. Therefore, you need to understand how to choose the right cut length.

First you need to decide on one of the types of curtains described above. It should be noted that in most cases long curtains are still chosen – they are only appropriate when the window sill space is actively used.In any case, short curtains are usually needed either to emphasize the lightness of the style, or to meet strict safety requirements.

The next step will be to determine the size of the area that is planned to be closed with a curtain. The height is measured from the ceiling cornice to the window sill or floor (depending on the type of length that is preferred), and measurements should be taken at several control points at once, of which there should be at least five. This is especially true in old houses, which are characterized by subsidence processes, due to which the cocoon opening can be skewed. Repeated measurement of the height at different points will also allow you to hide possible unevenness in the floor, or at least not to face an unpleasant surprise, already having ready-made curtains.

The distance from the eaves to the floor is far from the final length of the curtain, because you need to take into account a few more important points. At least the upper part of the fabric is partially hemmed, and a few centimeters can be spent on fastenings – for example, curtains with eyelets usually require a good 10 cm in length, but a couple of centimeters may be enough for hooks.

A small percentage of the length is guaranteed to level the folds, therefore the norm is to increase the length by another 2-4 cm. This point is rather difficult for a beginner, therefore it is advisable to actively consult with the seller in the fabric store. If the curtain should be literally the length of the floor, it is advisable to make it shorter by one or two centimeters – when the fabric does not drag along the floor, this will make it cleaner, and the interior will not spoil it at all.

Unusual curtains that are asymmetrical as opposed to the classic rectangle, and sometimes even have curly cutouts of complex shape, are all the rage today. If it is conceived to sew just such curtains into the room, it is already undesirable to do with minimal measurements like those described above, it is worthwhile to first draw a detailed diagram of the product with dimensions, rechecking everything several times.

Selection by width

As for the width, the main determining factor here is the ceiling cornice. Good curtains should make it possible to completely curtain the window, along the entire length of the cornice, so you should start by measuring the last indicator. The extreme positions of the left and right hooks are chosen as starting points, but if the device is intended for a grommet, measurements are taken from those points beyond which they can no longer go.

It is wrong to think that the length of the curtain rod means the width of the curtains, since you have hardly seen a window covered with a perfectly straight curtain anywhere. An exception can be made only for the narrowest windows with a width of no more than one and a half meters; in all other cases, the fabric must be taken with a margin in order to leave the opportunity to form attractive folds.

There is a common formula according to which a cornice of 1.5-2 meters suggests a curtain that is one and a half times longer than this size. And with the length of the cornice over two meters, the curtain should be two or more times wider, and the indicators grow proportionally – a lot of folds are needed for a wide window. However, this is already a matter of taste for each consumer.

Tips for selection

For a person who is not alien to the innate sense of beauty, it is possible to independently create an interior without focusing on certain generally accepted norms, however, most people would be sincerely delighted to receive a hint regarding the choice of the style of curtains.

We have compiled some popular recommendations for all rooms in a typical apartment.

  • For a typical bedroom , floor-length curtains are the most advantageous solution, which are the main accent in the minimalistic design of the sleeping room. In this case, the presence of tulle of the same length is mandatory – this way a constant dimness of lighting and a feeling of privacy is achieved. The only exception to the rule will be the location of the bed directly under the window – in this case, long curtains will certainly interfere, therefore it is better to choose them up to the window sill.
  • Nursery in its principles mainly corresponds to a bedroom for adults, but in the case of very small inhabitants, special requirements arise. So, long curtains are literally contraindicated here – even if the owners do not have the strength to tear them off along with the cornice, they will be at least constantly stained. For this reason, short window curtains or even more modern options such as roller blinds, which cover only the window opening, are much more often chosen for a children’s room.
  • For most kitchens , short curtains are also the optimal solution – this is due to both fire safety requirements and concern for the cleanliness of the fabric. In addition, the kitchens in many old-built houses are characterized by a relatively small area, and therefore the window sill can be used to store utensils or even as a small table – this aspect also speaks in favor of a short version, which should not even reach the window sill.Experiments with long curtains to create an atypical interior are only appropriate if there is enough space in the kitchen and no electrical or gas appliances are located near the window.
  • Living room theoretically provides maximum space for experimentation and experimentation, but it is traditional here to showcase chic. This means that dragging curtains across the floor are nowhere more appropriate than in this room.

At the same time, you do not need to turn your own living room into a Soviet house of culture – the curtain will certainly create an impression of enormity, therefore preference should be given to light fabrics that flutter in a draft and do not create ugly kinks.

How to correctly calculate tulle for a window in width and length

A window decorated with nice gathers and folds is pure mathematics.Because without it, it is easy to make a mistake with the size of curtains and curtains and buy extra material – by the way, often not cheap. Therefore, we suggest that you be patient and read this article on how to calculate the tulle in width.

Curtains and tulle are often sold in ready-made pieces, on which loops and decor are sewn. But these cuts of fabrics are just suitable for standard windows. And if you need to arrange a French window on the floor to the terrace? Or curtains have long been asking for an arched window in the kitchen? Or do you want to change the curtains in the hall of your country house? Everything is real, and in this case, individual tailoring will come to your aid.And here the fiery designer is replaced by a cold mathematician – you need to calculate how much material is required for curtains in length and width.

  • With the length, everything is more or less simple: just measure the height of the ceiling, subtract the height of the curtains – to get an approximate result.

  • With the width, everything is a little more complicated: it depends on the number of folds on the material, the type of fastening, the length of the cornice, etc.

How to accurately calculate the width of tulle

We will tell you in order how to accurately calculate the width of the tulle, depending on various factors.

On the cornice

The width of the tulle depends on the length of the cornice – so first decide on its parameters. On average, the cornice should protrude on both sides of the window by 15 centimeters to the left and right. There are also non-standard windows – for example, too narrow on wide walls and vice versa. In this case, the length of the cornice can be reduced or increased – 5-7 centimeters is a perfectly acceptable figure. The length of the resulting curtain rod is the minimum width of your curtains when unfolded.

An approximate calculation looks like this: standard windows are 3 meters wide, and the minimum width of the canvas should be 4.5 meters – if the figure is smaller, the window will not look the best. The maximum footage is 9 meters, this width looks luxurious, but in the opinion of some, too pretentious. So we recommend choosing the middle option.

Blade arrangement type

To calculate how much tulle is needed, you need to know how it will be located along the window – hang freely over its entire area or gather in two folds along the edges of the window. If you are considering the classic first option for the arrangement of the tulle in the fold, then the length of the eaves must be multiplied by 1.5. The second option is more democratic and implies freedom of creativity – it all depends on how lush the folds of your curtains will be.

To choose the right tulle in size, you need to imagine exactly how the curtains will be located – how many folds they will have, how lush they will be. There is even such a concept – the splendor coefficient, which determines how many folds the curtain will have.

There are three levels of this coefficient:

  • minimum – 1: 1.5 – for example, for a curtain rod with a length of 3 meters, a curtain with a width of 4.5 meters is suitable,

  • medium – 1: 2 – for a window of 3 meters you need 6 meters of material – you get an elegantly decorated window with beautiful folds, here you can also use a tape that will help to make the folds the same,

  • maximum – 1: 3 – for a window of 3 meters you need 9 meters of fabric.Curtains designed in this way look luxurious, and a large supply of fabric allows you to create any folds. This design method looks best on tulle or organza of a simple pattern – if there is a complex image on the fabric, for example, a tapestry, folds will hide all the richness of colors.

Material and purpose of curtains

Dense curtains that block sunlight usually cover the entire window, so their width is equal to the length of the cornice, plus for freedom of action and the possibility of complete closure, they add 20 centimeters on both sides.

The denser the curtains, the less creases should be – otherwise they will block the light even when the curtains are open. And such heavy folds do not look the best. But if tulle or organza are chosen as the fabric for the curtains, there should be more folds – this will not overload the window, on the contrary, it will give lightness and grace to the whole room.

Window shape

It is easier with standard windows – but with windows of an unusual geometric shape, you will have to tinker with. For a corner window or bay window, add 10 centimeters for each bend and corner.

Mounting method

The amount of tulle and the collection coefficient also depend on the method of fastening the curtains. For example, for eyelets – plastic or metal rings, which are often used for balcony windows, it is better to take material twice as long as the length of the cornice. In this case, the folds will turn out to be noble and magnificent. If the material is heavy, lightweight and durable eyelets will easily cope with its movement along the entire length of the curtain rod.

The most popular way of attaching curtains is with hinges. The material is attached to the bar using textile loops or special ties – it looks laconic and versatile. For such fastenings, it is enough to pick up fabrics 1.5 times longer than the length of the cornice. More frequent and shallow attachments will provide small and neat creases.

Webbing type

The width of the curtain material also depends on the type of braid – a tape that creates even folds over the entire surface of the curtain.

  • For example, for a curtain tape that creates small ruffles across the entire width, you need to take fabrics twice the length of the curtain.

  • If you chose a braid that creates puffs – lush folds – it is better to take fabrics 2.5 times larger.

  • Pencil folds – even and oblong – will require multiplying the length of the eaves by 1.5 to obtain the width of the curtains.

  • For triple pleats, or crow’s feet, the width of the curtains should be doubled.

To choose the width of the tulle, pay attention to the packaging of the tape – the gathering factor that it gives is usually indicated on the curtain tape. The universal indicator is 2.5, it is suitable for all types of curtains and their materials.

The main thing is not to rush to make a choice. Take a closer look at the selected material, look at interior photos with the participation of such curtains, select the desired drapery option – and go to the store! Experienced consultants will help you with this difficult math.
