Curtain rod ends kids: Kids Curtain Rods –

How to make a cheap, awesome, DIY Curtain Rod

Let’s talk Curtain Rods. More specifically, let’s talk about how to make a DIY curtain rod.

Before I begin, thank you so much for being so kind about my new curtains in the dining room! I am taken aback daily by how many genuinely nice people there are in this blogging community. Thank you for loving the curtains along with me, and also thank you for just being plain ol’ nice.

Now, shall we get down to business?

I should dedicate an entire post just to curtain rods, because after this experience, I think I know every single option of inexpensive curtain rod options in the greater Austin area. That post is for another day though. Let me just say that the cheapest options I found were Wal-Mart and IKEA. But my DIY curtain rod version is significantly cheaper than both of those.

How to make a DIY Curtain Rod:

I headed to our local hardware store on a mission to find a practical inexpensive solution to my curtain rod dilemma. Part of my problem is that I needed a VERY LONG curtain rod; 113 inches to be exact. You can’t exactly buy rods that are almost 10 feet long at Wal-Mart. Trust me, I tried. 🙂

At our local hardware store I found a variety of objects that could work, but in the end the heavens parted and I stumbled on Electrical Conduit.

Bless the person that invented this light weight, sturdy, and extremely inexpensive product!

It was exactly what I was looking for; 10 feet long, light weight, metal, and the best part, only TWO DOLLARS.

But let me back up for a sec. I first considered PVC pipe. I’ve seen it done before, but I was worried that the weight of the curtains would eventually make the PVC bow or sag. Also, PVC is plastic which would require an additional step to paint. I considered buying a wooden dowel rod, but scratched that plan because I just didn’t like it. I also strongly considered plumbing pipe, which I almost bought before stumbling upon the Electrical Conduit. The plumbing pipe was very heavy though and was significantly more expensive.

In the end, in my humble opinion, if you need a custom DIY curtain rod, Conduit is 100% the route you should go if you don’t want to spend fifty bucks. It can be found on this isle:

I bought the conduit that was 1/2″ x 10′.

To cut conduit to size you’ll need a pipe cutter. I bought the absolute cheapest one I could find. It was $6, and worked about as well as you’d expect a $6 pipe cutter to work. The job got done though, and I’m not complaining!

To create a custom DIY curtain rod you’ll need to figure out how long to cut the rod. Don’t forget to keep in mind the width of each of the finials sticking out on either side as well. My rod needed to be 113″.

I just measured the pipe and marked where I needed to cut with a Sharpie.

Now just attach your pipe cutter and follow the directions on the back. Basically rotate it around the pipe one full rotation, then tighten the knob. Do another rotation. Tighten. Repeat until the pipe snaps in half.

I ended up using pliers to tighten the knob each time and vice grips to hold the tubing while I forced the cutter around the pipe.

The pipe cutter made a very smooth cut. I was actually impressed that the edge of the pipe wasn’t sharp at all. Double bonus for not slicing my finger on the end of a sharp pipe!

Once the pipe was cut to length I just propped it up in the garage and spray painted it, as well as all the DIY curtain rod hardware. I considered my favorite color, Oil Rubbed Bronze, but I decided on flat black so that my curtains would be the focal point, not the rod itself.

I like to spray paint IN the garage so that no debris blows into my object and sticks to it. I just propped the pipe up against the leftover feet from my sofa table project.

I already had the brackets for the rod (I’m a hoarder… lol) so I just spray painted them black as well. I’m pretty sure you can buy just brackets at most stores, and if not, I see them at goodwill for super cheap all the time.

I also dug out some anchors and screws from my screw and nail stash, stuck them into a used-up sanding block, and gave them a good coat of spray paint as well.

Here’s a good close-up shot of the rod once it was dry. I didn’t prime any of this stuff before I painted, but after doing this project, I recommend you prime your conduit with automotive primer (it’s for metal) so that no paint scratches off.

Once everything was dry I installed it and then got to work on hanging the curtain.

Curtain Rings and Finials:

I found these curtain rings at ikea for only $2.99 for 10 of them, which is the best price I found anywhere. The next cheapest option was Wal-Mart. Their rings were $7.99 for a 7-pack, but they were metal, not plastic.

If you are going to have your rings show, I’d go with the nicer ones that are metal (or wood if you are going that route), but my clips were going to be hidden, so the plastic ones were great.

Also, I totally scored on finials at ikea. I’ve never seen finials there before, so I guess they are a brand-new product. They have two options, a solid metal curvy one, or clear glass orb ones. I chose the clear glass ones. Both options are only $5.99 for the 2-pack. The next closest thing I found was at our local hardware store for basic round unfinished wood ones (ugly) for $10 for a 2-pack.

Attaching the Curtain Rings:

I originally saw this idea over at Thrifty Decor Chick, but I can’t find the specific post. So anyway, this was her idea, I just copied it.

I want Pinch Pleat Curtains for my dining room, but they seem like a whole lot of hassle to make them, so I just “faux” made them. So easy! Here’s the final look, and then I’ll show you how I did it.

First, lay out your curtain flat on the ground and lay the rings under (above?) it. You want to make sure you get the spacing even. I eye-balled this step. You don’t need to be totally precise here.

When you attach the clips you are going to clip them on the back of the curtain, not the top edge. This creates the pleat look.

To attach the rings, pinch the section of curtain you want the ring to be attached to, then just clip the ring right onto the pinched fabric. Make sure you set your rings low enough that they will barely show over the top of your curtain.

That’s it. It’s so easy. Now just gather them all up and slide them onto your rod that you’ve already set on top of your brackets.

You are almost done! All you need to do now is add your finials on either end. Because I used Conduit and not real curtain rod, the conduit was just slightly too small for the finials. It was really no big deal. I just grabbed some black electrical tape (I used this solely because it was black, not because it was electrical) and wrapped it around the tip of the pipe.

From there, slide your finials on, tighten them down with a tiny screwdriver, and you are done!

I know I showed you a lot of steps, but trust me, this was an easy project. It did take some time, but the amount of money I saved was so worth it. Here’s the cost break-down for ya:

Electrical Conduit: $2
Finials (2-pack): $6
Brackets and screws: FREE

Grand Total for the entire DIY Curtain Rod: $8

Trust me when I say to purchase a 10′ curtain rod could cost you anywhere from $40 – $80, if not more! I saved boo-koos of moola here.

So there you go. A complete step-by-step tutorial on how to make your own $8 DIY Curtain Rod.

* I want to add that you can purchase expandable rods that pull out to about 10 feet, but I personally hate extendable curtain rods. They leave a seam down the middle of your rod where the two ends meet, and I don’t like that at all! I want my DIY curtain rod to be one solid piece without any seams across it. This is why it was such an ordeal for me to find a 10′ rod. You can’t really buy rods that long at very many places, so they are very expensive.

I hope I was able to give you some useful tips that you can use in your own home!

If you’ve splurged on high-quality curtains for your home, the next step to ensuring a clean finish is purchasing a durable and attractive curtain rod. The best ones are made from sturdy materials like metal or wood and can support even the heaviest curtains easily.

We spoke with interior designer Whitney Jones, of Whitney J Decor to get the scoop on the best places to buy curtain rods and tips on what to look for while shopping. While expensive rods don’t necessarily ensure great quality, Jones recommends avoiding super cheap rods as they are often made of low-quality materials and can be easily bent or broken. “My recommendation would be a high quality metal rod, but wood rods are great too,” Jones said. Overall, Jones suggests that shoppers pick a sturdy rod and stick with the same design throughout their home.

With Jones’ advice in mind, we’ve selected five retailers that make great curtain rods. We’ve also included tips on the best installation practices for seamless curtain hanging.

Shop Curtain Rod Finials Online

Can I purchase rod finials at Spotlight?

Yes, Spotlight stocks a number of different rod finials for several brands of curtain rod. Rod finials are the decorative additions that fit onto the ends of each curtain rod or pole, and that lend a finishing decorative touch to your window dressing. Although many curtain rods are sold with finials included in the set, you can change those to suit your style or to update the look of your window dressings when you feel like it.

What types of rod finials are stocked at Spotlight?

There are too many different styles to list here, but some of the main shapes that remain popular are the ball finial, the cage finial (a round shape that is hollow in the centre), the flame finial and the shepherds crook finial. There are many variations on the design and there are also plain end stops, as well as finials that are embellished with glass, beading or other decorations. Finials are available in many different colours to match curtain rods.

How do I know which finials to buy for my curtain rod?

Different manufacturers can use different sizes for their curtain rods, so it is advisable to stick to the same brand as that of your curtain pole. If the same manufacturer makes curtain rods in different diameters, it is important to check that your finials will go over the end of the curtain rod. If in doubt, buy slightly larger and fill the extra space with some cardboard or other padding.

Where else can I use rod finials in my home?

Tapestries or other wall hangings can look very effective when hung from a rod with decorative finials, for instance at the head of a bed or just on their own to decorate a wall anywhere in the house. If you are using more rods and finials in one room, for instance over different windows and doors, it is advisable to stick to the same shape of finial to get a coordinated look. Complete the look with tieback holders in a style and colour that match your curtain rod and finials.

Can I use curtain rods and finials at all my windows?

Curtain rods and finials can be used for all windows or doors where you have some wall space above the window and on each side of the windows. If your windows run right up to the ceiling, a curtain rod will be the most useful way to fix your curtains, and there must be enough room by the side of your windows to ensure that the curtain rod can be fixed (the wall brackets are usually fitted 10 – 15 cm away from the window) and you will need extra room if you choose large curtain rod finials.

Prevent Bent Curtain Rods : 4 Steps

Bent Curtain Rods do not keep the curtain up over the window; they do, however, keep falling down – curtain and all.  Fallen curtains do not keep the cold and the sun out, or maintain some privacy.  The intent of this instructable is prevent curtain rods from being bent beyond use.  The audience is parents or adults who watch children and have spring loaded curtain rods.

The Story
We have some heavy (1.26 lbs) curtains that help keep the cold out during the winter and block the sun during the summer.  These curtains, also, keep the kids entertained, by hiding behind them and peering around them to see the snow or who pulled into the driveway.  So the curtains would often fall down.  To which we would put them back up and remind the kids to stay out from behind the curtains.  They did for awhile, but it did not stop them.  So the next step was to tie the curtains up in a knot during the day and remind the kids to leave the curtains alone.  They did for awhile, but the kids thought it was fun to jump up and grab the knot.  The next step was to extend the curtain rods where there was more tension against the frame and remind the kids to stay out from behind the curtains and to leave them alone.  They did for awhile, but the curtain rods became bent because the kids still played around the curtains and inadvertently pulled the curtains harder because the curtains didn’t fall as quickly.  One curtain rod became so bent it would even hold the curtain up.  More drastic measures were required.  But what?  Here is my solution on how to Prevent Bent Curtain Rods from occurring.

The intent of this instructable is to
1)  Prevent curtain rods from being bent beyond use for anyone who watches children or have cats that climb curtains and have spring loaded (tension) curtain rods.
2)  Provide a cost effective alternative to constantly replacing tension curtain rods.
3)  Encourage you to engage in a Do It Yourself franchise and community.

1) Inexpensive fix,
2) Quick fix,
3) Durable and
4) Not easy to detect.

Top Tips for Childproofing Your Home

If you have a little one on the way or a baby who is learning to crawl (and getting into everything), you’ve probably already started thinking about childproofing your home.

In this infographic we’ll show you our top tips for childproofing the home. Whether it’s installing cabinet locks or finding window treatments that are safer for kids, we’ll help you along the way.

Please note: This is not an exhaustive childproofing list, just suggestions based on what we believe is most important. Check out other childproofing resources from authorities like, Safe Kids Worldwide and the CPSC for more information.

Top Tips for Childproofing your Home

Childproofing the Bathroom

Adjust water heater temperature to 120 degrees to prevent scalding. This will also lower your energy bill!
Lock cabinets that contain medicine and/or cleaning supplies.
Use soft faucet covers to keep kids from hitting their head in the bathtub.
Install toilet locks to prevent infants from drowning.

Childproofing Windows and Stairs

Install curtain rods into studs, not just drywall.

Use clip drapery rings so fabric will release if kids pull on curtain instead of rod coming down.

Choose safer window treatments with no exposed cords like cordless spring blinds or cellular shades, shutters, draperies and cordless roller shades.

Place window guards on 2nd story windows if you plan on opening them for a breeze.

Block stair railings with openings wider than 4″.

Block top and bottom of staircase with gates.

Childproofing the Nursery or Bedroom

Anchor dressers and other large furniture to the wall.

Don’t place cribs within reach of windows or window treatments.

Don’t hang photos or shelves on the wall over crib.

Childproofing the Living Room

Anchor heavy furniture like bookshelves and televisions to the wall.

Block access to fireplace with a gate and remove the gas key.

Cover sharp edges of furniture with foam protectors.

Cover all plugs. Sliding outlet covers are more difficult for kids to open, and you don’t have to remember to replace the cover after using the plug.

Childproofing the Kitchen

Keep cleaning supplies in a locked cabinet.

Install locks on cabinets and drawers.

Install locks on large appliances like the refrigerator, oven and dishwasher.

Install locks on stove burner knobs.

How to Choose the Right Curtain Rod Colour

Unsure which curtain rod colour you should choose? Here’s a guide to help you choose the right curtain rod, whether you want to frame your room perfectly or have the curtain rod disappear in your room design.

And before you purchase a curtain rod, read this post to make sure you measured them correctly.

One of my lovely readers recently asked if I would write about curtain rods. What size, what colour, which finials? Trendy or timeless? Wood, metal, or something else?

Decor Pad

Curtain rods can either frame a room or they can be made to visually disappear. Generally speaking, they should be chosen with contrast in mind. Think of your curtain rods like eyeliner: they are there to frame the room and give it depth, but not to command all the attention for themselves.

How to Choose the Right Curtain Rod Colour

Choose the darkest colour in the room

Look at the dark furniture in the room when choosing a colour for your rods. In the room shown below, the beams, accent chair, and the base of the lamp relate to the espresso rod colour.

Here again in the bedroom below, the thin, dark coloured rods are repeated in the canopy bed and the bedroom accent furniture.

House of Turquoise

Choose a curtain rod colour that makes them disappear

The curtain rods appear to be white in the bedroom below. This helps to make the curtain rods almost disappear in this mostly white bedroom, instead of drawing unnecessary attention to them. The curtain rods do not need to be the star of the show in this light and airy bedroom design.

Choose a curtain rod colour that relates to the metals in the room

Brushed stainless rods coordinate nicely with the light fixture and grey tones in this Manhattan apartment interior.

Brass curtain rods are a great choice for this room because they relate to all the varying gold tones in the living room decor and accessories. A darker bronze curtain rod would have also worked in this room as it coordinates with the sofa and fireplace.

Although this room below is lovely, there is very little brass or gold in this room to relate to the curtain rod (maybe in the picture frame?). In this room, the curtain rod colour is a statement all its own. I think a brown rod would also look nice to tie in with the accent furniture.

Hanging drapery on a track works if you want a clean look and don’t have too much space above your window. Because these are doors, they are taller and don’t leave too much space between the ceiling and the top of the window. I think this look would have been much better if the track was either painted the same colour as the ceiling or black.

In my living room, I opted for brushed stainless rods because I already have lots of contrast with my pink colour blocking curtains and didn’t need to add more by detail by introducing black rods. My curtain rods also relate to the stainless steel legs of my white chairs.

Choose the Right Curtain Rod Size

To my eye, slim rods look better than fat ones, so I always look for drapery rods that are close to 1″ in diameter. Rarely should you go thinner than 1″ curtain rod. Often, that’s when it usually looks cheap and like you bought them from IKEA. So, just buy the 1″ rods at IKEA instead. There’s nothing wrong with buying your rods there – just get the right size!

The rods in this bedroom below would look better if they were closer to 1″ in size, and better still if they were black to coordinate with the ottoman legs and picture frames.

Sometimes, a full-length rod is unnecessary. Below, there is a panel only on the right and it cannot be drawn closed. There’s probably a matching window (out of frame) on the left to make this asymmetrical treatment work. Notice the rod is gold, which picks up the accessories and mirrored frame. Perfect.

Curtain Rod Finials

I have crystal finials on my rods because they work with the glam feel of my living room, but nine times out of ten, I will choose a simple ball finial. I’m not usually looking to draw attention to the finials, although a lot depends on the way the interior is decorated and how important the window treatments are to the final look and feel of the room.

Timeless or Trendy Curtain Rods

Which rods are the most timeless? Go for simple and slim, and your rods will look timeless. Go flashy, chunky, and attention-grabbing, and they’ll be as trendy as anything else in your house that can be described the same way. (Did you really think I would say anything other than “simple”?)

Curtain Rod Material

I always use metal over wooden rods. Little-known fact is that wooden ones have to be turned occasionally so they don’t bow, and really, do you want to add that task to your to-do list? Neither do I.

How to create flow in your rooms with curtain rods

Should adjoining rooms have the same rods? It depends.

If you can see all the windows at the same time, then yes. You might even need the same drapery between rooms if your home is very open concept-like. The more obvious separation there is between rooms, though, the less you need to be concerned with coordinating rods between them.

In a house I recently decorated, we introduced brass pendants in a kitchen that adjoins the living room. The two spaces are separate enough to allow for different rods and drapery treatments, so we will install gold rods in the kitchen to repeat the colour of the pendants, and espresso rods in the living room to repeat the colours of the floor and millwork.

90,000 what is it and what types are there, how to choose a bracket and fasteners for window decoration, which is better

Cornice often performs not so much its main function as decorative. And no wonder: designers simply could not pass by such a great option for experimentation. Cornices are of various types, each of which is good in its own way.

What is it?

By and large, the cornice is just a crossbar on which the curtains are attached. It would seem that nothing special, but now the cornices do not simply serve to hold the fabric. They are important elements that allow you to maintain the desired style of the room, decorate it, and also make the window opening a bright accent. Eaves are needed for attaching curtains to windows of different locations. These can be classic rectangular windows, ceiling windows, curly ones. Depending on the shape and purpose of the window, as well as on its location, the required type of cornice is selected.

This element is made from a wide variety of materials, which further influence the overall perception of the room. You can make it so that the cornice will not be visible at all. The so-called concealed models are popular lately due to the fact that they create an unusual effect. In order to independently choose a suitable option for curtains, you need to understand well the methods of fastening, types, materials from which the curtain rods are made. Taking into account each of these points, as well as focusing on the general style of the room, you will be able to buy a successful cornice and in the future you will never regret buying.

How this or that model works depends on its type. Below are the names of the main elements with description:

  • Brackets or hangers to secure the base . The set usually comes with 2 or more pieces, depending on the length of the curtain rod. Two brackets (hangers) are installed on the sides, and at least one supporting one is installed in the middle.
  • Base for hanging curtains . With respect to the type of cornice, it can be a rod, string or profile;
  • Flairons (if provided). In general, curved lugs are installed at the ends of a round curtain rod with a rod.

In some cases, the structure will consist of only one solid part, for example, a tire when attaching a tire cornice to the ceiling.

All models can be divided into two large groups according to the mounting arrangement: ceiling and wall:

  1. Ceiling versions mount directly to the ceiling. Ceiling structures are able to visually increase the height of the room, make it more majestic. In combination with the large width of the cornice – from wall to wall – they create a truly solemn atmosphere in the room. Ceiling cornices are also installed in cases where it is not possible to fix the wall ones (for example, if the wall material is drywall or the distance between the ceiling and the window opening is too small). Ceiling options are inferior to wall ones in the ability to withstand a large weight of curtains, as well as in the choice of options for mounting curtains (ceiling models, as a rule, are installed only of two types – bus and profile).
  2. Wall-mounted options offer plenty of room for imagination . Such cornices have been popular for several years and do not plan to surrender their positions. Most often, the installation of wall cornices is chosen in the presence of stretch or suspended ceilings. Depending on the curtain model, only ceiling or only wall curtain rods are suitable for its fastening. So, Roman blinds can only be hung on wall options in order to achieve their snug fit to the window. Depending on the configuration, both ceiling and wall cornices can be presented in the following variations.

Round cornices are the most traditional and familiar type. Currently, there is not only a single-row, but also a two-row round version with rods of different diameters, located parallel to each other. Round bars are supplemented with special tips – finials – on each side. At first, they did not carry any decorative functions, but after some time, designers began to make them curly: in the form of flowers, petals, animal heads, and not so long ago, finials decorated with rhinestones and enamel appeared.

The choice of a round cornice imposes certain obligations: the fastening elements of the curtains, as well as the various decor of the curtains, must be carried out in the same design with the tips and the rod itself. For example, when ordering curtains with eyelets, not only the eyelets themselves, but also the curtain hooks must be made in the same color scheme with the cornice and using the same materials. The cornice can be either straight or angled round. Corner is used for hanging curtains in the bathroom and usually does not participate in the decor of living quarters.

String designs look very modern and minimalistic. They do not take up much space and are almost invisible, but their presence adds the necessary shocking to the room. The design of the string cornice is extremely simple and consists of two brackets equipped with special devices for tensioning the string itself. It is a metal cable that can withstand a lot of weight.

The same cannot be said about the fixing devices, they usually loosen under heavy curtains, which leads to the “sagging” of the entire structure. Most often, string cornices are used in interiors of modern styles: Hi-tech, Minimalism, Modern. In traditional interiors, they will look more than out of place.

Shinny is a structure equipped with a special groove in which fastening mechanisms are installed so that the curtain slides between two parts of the cornice. This was often installed earlier in the USSR, so most people, by inertia, choose it.The number of rows is usually limited to two, but variations are possible. This is due to the fact that it is not customary to equip tire cornices with additional pompous details such as lambrequins or bandos: the insufficiently majestic design of the cornice itself does not allow this from a stylistic point of view. But the use of light curtains in combination with a thick sliding curtain is not prohibited.

A big plus is that on the tire cornice the curtain is attached close to the ceiling, and there is practically no gap left. Therefore, it is the tire ones that are chosen as ceiling mounts: so the ceiling of the room seems even higher.

Baguette is complemented by a carved strip. The plank not only covers the entire “filling”, which is responsible for the ability to move the curtains, but also acts as a decorative element. The relatively low price of a baguette cornice allows you to choose various types of coatings: from plastic wood trim to natural leather.Often there is a place under the bar for lighting, which gives the curtains a special charm.

The right lighting enhances their beauty even more. As a rule, a conventional bus structure is hidden under the bar, so that the baguette version is a combined type.

A profile cornice is in many ways similar to a tire cornice, except that the rows of a tire cornice are separated from each other and represent, as it were, separate slats, while the profile is a single flat piece.Profile models are made of flexible materials, so that they can be installed even along the contour of a figured window. The huge advantage of profile options is just their flexibility. For example, by installing this option on the ceiling, you can round off its edges, “hiding” the unattractive appearance of the sidewalls.

Profile cornices are a good alternative to wall moldings, since they can also be equipped with a hood – a strip with various patterns that covers the curtain fasteners. The hood is not a very wide element, but the possibilities of decorating it are quite large: from embossed patterns with gilding to fabric coverings. The three-row profile version is usually supplied complete with a stretch ceiling. It allows you to hang curtains, curtains and a soft lambrequin at the same time.

As the name implies, telescopic models can be folded in and out.Unlike conventional tubular curtain rods, they do not need to be filed and adjusted to the desired size: you just need to fold them a little. This function allows the use of telescopic curtain rods not once, but in different rooms after various repairs.

Cafe mini-cornices

Stained glass mini-cornice is attached directly to the frame. These models have a relatively small diameter and are usually supplied in pairs. They can be mounted at the top and bottom or in the middle of the window to achieve a cute, rustic room look. The ability to protect each of the sashes separately, as well as the unusual design type, makes the telescopic window design quite popular. In addition, this type of attachment can save space in the room. Often it is the stained glass cornices that are installed on the sloped walls of the attic. A curtain fabric can be fixed between a pair of such elements. This design is also suitable for decorating a skylight.

Swivel is also attached directly to each of the leaves. Usually it is chosen for windows that sit very “deep” in the wall and for blind windows. The curtains installed on the swing-out curtain rods can be opened and closed like a sash. Usually only one curtain rod is required, the curtain hangs on it freely.

Spacer models are somewhat similar to telescopic models, with a few significant differences. Spacer cornice is a stick with a spring inside. The spring pushes the ends out. Thus, the installed cornice “rests” on the walls, without the need for additional support in the form of brackets. When choosing this type, you need to be careful, since if the wall material is not strong enough, it can severely damage them. For example, plasterboard walls will not withstand pressure. It is also not recommended to hang heavy curtains on the spacer cornice. Despite the fact that the design is quite reliable, it cannot cope with heavy weight.

Roman blinds

Such designs are installed directly on the sash, allowing the curtain to be lifted vertically, like a blind. The size of the window frame must perfectly match the size of the eaves, otherwise installation will become impossible.

Which is better?

Depending on the functional purpose of the room and whether it is residential or non-residential, its general style depends on which option should be preferred. For non-residential premises, it is better to prefer simple, reliable designs. For example, when choosing a suitable option for a balcony, decide what effect you want to achieve. To create a cozy home environment, you should give preference to round cornices. In a room that serves as a living room or bedroom, you can choose any option, it all depends on your preferences and the style of the room. In particular, modern styles are “friendly” with string or profile designs, and for the more traditional baguette or tubular models are suitable.

Attic spaces are of particular interest. For a roof window located on the ceiling, you can choose both mini-eaves “cafe”, and for roller blinds. It all depends on how much you want to darken the room. Ordinary curtains will not fit as close to the glass as rolled curtains, therefore more light will penetrate into the room. There are no good or bad curtain rods, each of them has its own merits. There are suitable and unsuitable designs. If you look at the choice from this point of view, it becomes much easier and more enjoyable.

Eaves are usually complemented by a variety of fittings. There are two types of mounts: bracket and hanger .Their division is extremely conditional and depends on what exactly the structure is attached to – to the ceiling or to the wall. So, suspensions are used for ceiling structures, and brackets for wall structures. Brackets are of open and closed type. The open holder allows you to simply put the bar on top of the mounts and just as easily remove it. This type is generally not useful for ceiling mounts.

Closed fastening means that the rod will be threaded through it, then attached to the wall or ceiling and left right there. There is no talk of any disconnection. Therefore, this fact must be taken into account when choosing curtain fasteners. There are very different curtain fasteners: eyelets, hinges, ties, hooks, rings, magnets, and so on. The choice of each is determined by the type of cornice, as well as whether the closed or open type of fastening is used. For example, the curtain on the eyelets cannot be placed on a closed-type cornice, since it will not be possible to remove it for washing in the future without disassembling the cornice completely. When choosing tips, be guided not only by their attractiveness, but also by the diameter of the rod.

It is also important to remember about the general style filling: choosing a plastic tip for a rod made of noble wood, you run the risk of making a ridiculous duet.

Curtain rods are made of various materials, ranging from rather expensive to the most affordable:

  • The most economical material is plastic. Plastic curtain rods are quite in demand today, especially ceiling ones. They do not draw attention to themselves, allowing you to place accents in the room. Such models can even be hidden behind the ceiling, creating the illusion that the curtains are not attached to anything and just float on their own. A similar solution is applicable for simple, modest interiors, but bright solutions can also be found.
  • Recently, it has been possible to paste over plastic structures with a special material imitating various coatings: wood, leather, even metal. It is not clear from a distance that this is a fake, but upon closer examination it becomes obvious. Plastic and even more so metal-plastic curtain rods can withstand a fairly large weight, however, when ordering, it is worth clarifying this issue separately.
  • Wooden cornices are a timeless classic, allows you to give any room a regal look. There are both tubular and baguette cornices made of wood, and both types look great. You need to be careful when choosing a wooden baguette cornice. The design looks quite massive and is not suitable for window decoration in a small room with a low ceiling. Wooden models in themselves are a bright decoration of the room, so you need to plan their use even at the stage of planning the interior design in order to correctly fit them into the situation in the future. Wooden curtain rods are able to withstand quite a lot of weight (especially wall models). They go well with classic heavy curtains made of sturdy fabrics like brocade, jacquard, tapestry, but can also enhance the beauty of light curtains.

Metal curtain rods are the most expensive. They are distinguished by durability, an expensive look and a large selection of different options.

Metal structures are presented in different coatings:

  • White;
  • Black;
  • Gold Plated;
  • Brass;
  • Copper.

The texture can be matte or glossy: matte cornices are more suitable for modern interiors, and glossy ones for classic ones. However, there may be exceptions to this rule. Curly cornices are especially loved and popular. You can buy a ready-made forged cornice, or you can order an individual design. Individual models are more expensive for two reasons: they are made in an exclusive version and, as a rule, by hand.Iron curtain rods are heavy on their own, so they require high-quality, reliable wall mounting.

The length of the mini-cornices depends on the width of the window sash: the cornice should be slightly narrower than the sash. The same applies to swivel and roman blinds. The diameter of the mini-cornices is approximately 1 centimeter. The diameter of the iron rods varies from 10 to 40 mm, depending on the purpose of the pipe.Single models are typically 25mm in diameter. In double-row, the bar for curtains is 28 mm, and for tulle – from 10 to 16 mm. The length usually ranges from 160 to 360 cm, but you can buy a one-piece rod 28-50 mm in diameter and 6 m long.

The diameter of the wooden rod is 28 mm as standard. Models are produced with a diameter of 16, 28, 25 mm and a maximum length of 2 m. You can make a bar up to 50 mm in diameter to order, then its length can reach 4 m.Plastic tires are up to 4 m long and can be up to 8.7 cm wide depending on the number of rows. The trim strip is standard 5 or 9 cm, but models with hoods have wider trims up to 300 mm. The diameter of a standard plastic rod is the same as that of a wooden rod – 28 mm. For kitchens or bathrooms, choose thin tulle models 12 and 16 mm. The length is from 2 to 3.6 m.

Finding the correct size of the cornice is easy if you start from the existing selection standards, as well as from several rules:

  • On each side, it is necessary to make the cornice 15-40 cm longer than the window opening;
  • When installing a cornice in the entire wall, it should lag behind the wall by 1.5-2 cm on each side;
  • Remember to install additional brackets every 1.5-2 m for wall-mounted eaves and every 30-50 cm for ceiling-mounted models.

Color solutions

White cornices are most common today. This color goes well with the ceiling and baseboards, and visually adds height to the room. The texture options look interesting. Natural materials such as wood and leather look great in classic or colonial interiors. Light gilding will add pretentiousness to the decoration in the good sense of the word.Black curtain rods will perfectly fit into modern styles, especially if you need to make the top of the curtains as invisible as possible, while leaving it spectacular.

Various metallic shades have not been ignored for many years. Brass and copper curtain rods add sophistication and replace the slightly boring gold and silver.

How to choose?

Best of all, if you attend to the choice of the cornice before the start of the repair. Then you do not have to then in a panic select an option that is more or less combined with the already finished interior. But it is necessary to build on not only the style. The features of the room also mean a lot:

  • For a narrow, long room with a window on a narrow wall, cornices are the best choice to cover the entire space around the window. The cornice must be hung just below the ceiling in order to balance the proportions of the room.
  • Wooden bulky structures or wide baguette cornices should be purchased for decorating large halls, as they will look bulky in small rooms.
  • Round cornices are suitable for framing windows in any room size. If you choose the right finials, the room will seem cozier and more harmonious.
  • String cornices create an interesting effect of curtains floating in the air. They are perfect for small rooms in which the window should not become the center, but only set off the overall composition.
  • The larger and more majestic the room, the thicker the rod of the round cornice should be and the more expensive the material should be.If your budget is tight, use imitations such as the plastic curtain rail instead of the wooden one, or an inexpensive forged model.
  • Wrought iron structures should always be a bright accent, it is worth considering. It is almost impossible to “kill” the unusual element without overloading the room. Even for professional designers, this causes certain problems.

Which ones are in fashion now?

In our age, fashion is very democratic, and each of the listed types of cornices has its own actual embodiment. In particular, tire ceiling cornices, iron round and forged figured ones, are rightfully recognized as the most fashionable. Fashionable variations of the tubular cornice are mounted on the wall and equipped with simple attributes without unnecessary decor. They do not differ in bright colors: black is ideal. The given model of the cornice can be combined with any curtains, including the current classic models on the drawstring. It is also suitable for eyelet curtains, which designers use in almost every style.

In the case of forged options, the decor, on the contrary, is welcome. The most recent trend is the stylization of the cornice for a plant branch. It can be just a bare branch, or maybe with leaves. The small double forged mini eaves have a similar floral design. Colors for both small and large models should choose natural metals: blackened silver or gold, aged copper and bronze, brass.Black is also relevant here, especially when choosing mini-curtain rods for ceiling windows.

Interior examples

Fashionable simple iron tubular cornice does not attract too much attention, acting as an addition to the existing interior. The unobtrusive color and matte texture allows you to emphasize the deliberate simplicity of the design, while at the same time focusing on the interesting design of the window itself. The tire cornice is almost invisible under the ceiling of this living room . This choice is successful for a small room, since it allows you not to block the access of light to the room, while visually increasing the ceiling. A similar effect is provided not only by the white color and smooth texture, but also by the fact that the cornice is identical in width to the plinth.

Baguette cornice acts as a bando. In a room with such high ceilings, this solution is quite acceptable. It does not look overwhelmed due to the fact that the cornice is chosen to match the color of the walls and ceiling and is made in a simple design. The geometric pattern of the plank repeats the general direction in the interior, and the color of the contrasting element is selected in the same shade as the floors. For a modern bohemian interior, there is nothing better than a string cornice. It allows you not to distract attention from the bright curtains, serving as an accent in the interior. The roller blinds are fixed with a hidden cornice with a lifting mechanism. Thanks to this, the overall look of the bedroom, decorated in a rustic style, is not spoiled by the modern look of the structure.

In this case, the cornice is hidden behind the ceiling , which makes the room look even higher. It is quite possible that at night you can light up a special lighting built into the cornice. This helps to make the nursery atmosphere more interesting. An angled black iron cornice visually separates the walls and ceiling, made in the same color.Such small contrasting blotches are necessary to create a truly stylish interior. Forged finial perfectly complements the design, emphasizing its lightness. In this case, the curtains do not perform a protective function, but a zoning one. For the same purpose, small forged cornices were selected. They visually separate each of the “sofas” from each other. Reception allows you to visually lengthen the space without losing the functional component.

Curtain rods

The quality and appearance of the cornice is what should determine your choice. After all, this piece of furniture not only complements the design of the room, but it must also withstand a large weight of curtains, temperature drops and is suitable specifically for your curtains, such as the window and its shape.

Variety of curtain rods

Sizes and types of cornices are quite diverse. The lineup allows you to choose this piece of furniture exclusively for your design and technical requirements. They are classified according to several criteria:

  • mounting method – ceiling or wall;
  • material – wood, plastic, metal, combined;
  • form – round, string, profile cornices and baguettes.

The most popular curtain rod is metal curtain rod, it is the easiest to install among all other types.Convenience is the main reason for its widespread popularity. The installation of this particular type of curtain rod does not require the use of any tools or tools. This is possible thanks to the springs on the inside, which push the ends of the cornice outward for installation directly into the desired location.

When purchasing curtains for this curtain rod, make sure that the fabric is not too heavy. Since the spring rods only rely on pressure, they may not be able to hold curtains that are too heavy or bulky. This type of curtain rod is often used for bathroom curtains. If you are looking for something more decorative and yet easy to install, use a magnetic curtain rod.

The only drawback is the cost, as it is more expensive than other types. Not to mention, you will need to install metal window sills. Otherwise, this cornice will not work.

How to choose a curtain rod

When choosing a curtain rod, consider the weight of the curtains, not all materials can withstand, for example, burlap curtains. Also pay attention to the components for the selected model, make sure of their quality. This will determine how easy you can mount the cornice and how long it will serve you.

Cheap products usually do not differ in their appearance and cannot guarantee that they will not suddenly collapse under the weight of curtains. Therefore, it is best to buy curtain rods in specialized stores, where trained consultants will help you choose a model specifically for your room in terms of design and technical characteristics.

Types of eaves

The finishing of the overhangs depends only on the wishes of the developer. It has no effect on functionality, but only if all the recommendations of building codes and regulations are strictly followed.

Table. Types of eaves overhang structures

Overhang Short description

The simplest design, most often used on non-insulated roofs. The rafter legs are not sheathed, only a cornice board or a metal strip is used to protect the ends from moisture. On the filly, a solid crate is made. This option is recommended for use on roofs with soft roofs or flat structures.

A more complex and beautiful overhang, fully protects the under-roof space from moisture, birds and large insects. Currently, it is used not only as a constructive, but also as a decorative element, it can serve as a basis for the installation of lighting devices.

Before the final choice, you need to consult with professionals, while taking into account the appearance and the need to ensure the recommended operating conditions of the roof.

What tasks does the cornice perform?

The proportions of the cornice can change the visual image of the house, increasing or decreasing its expressiveness. The stylistic accents typical for a particular region should not be discarded either. Architectural traditions are being revived today in the private residential sector, where owners tend to emphasize the special style of a particular area. As for the tools for achieving a particular image, both the size and the shape of the eaves overhang will be important. The roof photo above, for example, demonstrates the advantages of a massive overhang in relation to a small house. Visually, the structure becomes lower and wider, which adds a sense of reliability and good quality to the perception of the structure.

Functional objectives will mainly be expressed in terms of design capabilities. In the part of the cornice, you can lay communications, arrange outlets for ventilation and chimney, install other engineering and technological channels. The width of the overhang will also affect the microclimatic properties of the house. The fact is that the long overhang of the cornice shades the window, absorbing thermal energy. If we are talking about a metal roof, then the accumulation will occur very quickly, passively heating the entire roof covering. This effect can be used in different ways in winter and summer.

How to properly sheathe overhangs based on a soft roof

During the winter season, the roof shed must be able to withstand a large accumulation of snow. If the structure is not strong, such a situation can lead to the collapse of both the canopy itself and the walls of the building. Therefore, the device of the eaves overhang of the soft roof must be carried out according to the technology.

With the minimum size of the overhang, it is necessary to equip the cornice exactly according to the technology, because an incorrect installation of the cornice on the roof eventually leads to the destruction of the outer surface of the wall. If the house is built of wood, then this can provoke rotting of the log house.

That is why it is necessary to carry out timely professional waterproofing. The fact is that without a roof cornice, the cladding of a building, covered with paint, will crack very quickly and lose its attractive appearance, so the installation of an overhang on a soft roof is very important. It allows you to eliminate the line between the upper part of the load-bearing wall and the internal structure of the roof slope.

This design perfectly ventilates the space under the roof, gives the facade of the building a well-groomed finished look, and also well protects the outer walls of the house from rainfall, snowfall and other weather disasters.

In addition to arranging a roof from a soft roof and making cornices for it, our company carries out the arrangement and repair of a seam roof in Moscow, and the cost of installing a membrane roof per square meter is one of the lowest.

Varieties of overhangs

The overhang of the roof protects the wall from the ingress of melt water, slanting rain, and also shades the house from hot sunlight.

In construction, the eaves overhang is classified according to its structural varieties:

  • Front . This structure serves to protect the external facades of the building and, in fact, is a continuation of the roof, protruding beyond the outer boundaries of the pitched roofs. The length of the front eaves overhang can be from 400 to 1000 mm and depends on the location of the eaves outlet. In some cases, the length can be increased to the required size. The front overhang, in contrast to the side overhang, is almost always made of a closed type and is hemmed with various materials.
  • Side . It is usually used with gable roofs and is located on the sides of the roof of the building. The length of the side overhangs varies from 500 to 600 mm.

The overhang of the roof, according to the standards, is obligatory equipped with a fence and ensures the delay of the snow mass.

Cornices: classification and main types

There is the following classification of overhangs:

  • Hemmed. In most cases, they are used on a hip gable roof.
  • Not hemmed. This type is the most common, it is used in almost every roof structure, both for single-slope and for gable.
  • Shortened. Applied to all major roof structures.
  • Box-type. Used for hip and gable roofs.

The eaves overhang node of the house is selected depending on the climate in the region in which the construction is underway.

  • Flush eaves. In this case, the rafters are not taken out of the boundaries of the walls, but along their edges, a horizontal drain board is fastened, to which gutters are subsequently mounted. The disadvantages of such overhangs include the lack of protection of the upper elements of the wall from moisture.
  • Open is widely used in private construction. The gutter system is fastened to the upper edges of the rafters or along their lower edge.
  • Closed. For such an overhang, the protruding ends of the rafters are closed with a cornice, which has a special groove for fastening the soffit from the inside. If there is an insulated attic, such a cornice should have a ventilation hole.
  • Front-line. In this case, the roofing device is completely determined by the designer’s imagination and can go beyond the boundaries of the walls and be flush. The protruding area of the roof requires obligatory filing, the width of which is at least 50 cm.

What is a roof cornice

The need for eaves is that this element protects the upper part of the walls from the damaging effects of precipitation and winds. The length of the eaves is determined based on the climate of the region. The longer the overhangs, the more likely the roof structure will collapse due to the accumulation of a large amount of snow and ice during heavy rainfall in winter.

The cornice has a protective function

With insufficient length, eaves overhangs poorly protect the walls from wind and rain and snow, which leads to their destruction over time. This, in turn, can lead to a collapse of the roof, as the geometry of the upper part of the walls changes. Correctly executed cornice will prevent the walls from collapsing and will give the whole house a complete look.

The cornice consists of several parts

Roof eaves filing device

Let’s first of all figure out what is the filing of the eaves.

The filing of the eaves of the roof has the following device options:

By the way, soffits are not required – in most cases, solid or partially perforated panels are sufficient:

Design and function

Roof cornice is an important element of roofing structures, this term denotes the lower parts of the roof slopes, which are their continuation. Installation of cornices is carried out during the arrangement of the rafter system by increasing the length of the rafters or by installing fillies. From above, the cornice, like the entire area of the slope, is covered with roofing material, and from the bottom it is sewn up with lumber, spotlights, siding. In the construction of the roof of the house, it performs the following functions:

  1. Protects the walls of the house from moisture. The eaves overhang protects the upper part of the outer walls from moisture and dirt ingress, while maintaining their attractive appearance and integrity.
  2. Prevents melt and rainwater from flowing into the foundation area. The structure of the eaves of the roof is such that it carries out streams of water and blocks of snow, sliding off the slope, further from the foundation of the house, preventing the erosion and destruction of the blind area.
  3. Gives the roof a finished, neat look. Roof overhangs, being a continuation of the slope, give the structure a more proportional look, harmoniously completing the architectural concept of the house.

Pay attention! Installation of cornices is an obligatory stage of roofing work, which is required by the technology of roof erection, regardless of its type, shape and type of waterproofing coating.Even flat roofs have a small overhang that protrudes beyond the outer walls of the structure.

Roof cornice

Design ↑

Under the eaves of the roof, in fact, part of the rafter legs protruding beyond the boundaries of the building facade is actually commemorated. In other words, this is a section of the roof hanging outward.

Ideally, its length should be equal to 0.5–0.6 m. If the roof structure does not allow for such a width of the roof overhang, then they resort to forced lengthening of the rafters, using filly for this.

Installation of eaves and overhangs is possible in two basic versions:

Many people recommend choosing the first option for the device. Firstly, it is more difficult to carry out the removal of the cornice and, secondly, it can create certain inconveniences – noise background, which is usually accompanied by a strong wind.

Materials used for covering overhangs

Popular materials used for sheathing eaves and eaves include wood and metal.

Board overhang

In most cases, this material is obtained from conifers, it has a moderate moisture content of wood. The thickness of such a cladding according to GOST is 17-22 mm, and the width and length are selected individually for each specific case. Fasteners are carried out on both sides with a step of up to 1 m, before that, the tree is pre-treated with impregnation from a moisture-resistant composition. In the role of impregnation, a special protective varnish or moisture-resistant paint is used.

Sewing wooden roof overhangs requires constant maintenance.Processing should be carried out every 3-5 years. In this case, they will last longer and retain their original appearance. In addition to the protective coating, the structure must be well ventilated. For this, inlet openings are arranged at the rate of 1: 400 of the ventilated weight area. With proper ventilation, air exchange is carried out through drilled holes and holes in the roof ridge. Protective nets are used to protect against birds and insects.

Galvanized steel

Such filing of eaves of the roof has the form of a steel sheet, the thickness of which is up to 0.8 mm – flat or perforated.Anti-corrosion paint is applied to the edges of the sheets.

Aluminum sheets

They are covered with a protective layer that prevents the formation of metal corrosion. The dimensions of the sheets can be in the range: thickness – 6 mm, width – 100-300 mm, length – 6000 mm. Fastening of aluminum sheathing sheets is carried out on special latches.

What material do you use to sew the overhang of the roof?

The width of the roof overhang is determined based on its location. The minimum width is 40 cm, and in the case of an unorganized drainage system, at least 60 cm.For lateral overhangs, in practice, the release of structures beyond the boundaries of the building reaches a value of 50-60 cm, for front overhangs – up to 1 m.

In a house made of wood, the length of the overhangs should be from 550 mm, in brick and in panel houses – up to 550 mm. But, there is also a minimum overhang of the roof – the length can be 400 mm, and in some cases the size even reaches 1200 mm.

Binder materials

Finishing of eaves overhangs is carried out with various building materials, among which there are both budgetary and exclusive options. When choosing, it is recommended to take into account the style of the building and adjacent buildings.

  1. Siding. Currently the most popular material. The main advantage is low price and ease of installation. Plastic panels are easy to cut and can be bent slightly if necessary. The industry offers buyers special panels for filing, this is the so-called siding for cornices. Its difference from the usual one is the presence of perforated ventilation holes. Siding can be purchased in various sizes and colors.

Siding for curtain rods is distinguished by the presence of perforation

  2. Natural boards. The second most famous material, recommended for traditional wooden buildings. Boards must be impregnated with effective antiseptics and covered with durable varnishes or paints for outdoor use. For filing, you can use a lining, an ordinary edged board, or a special hemming board. The technology is not difficult even for inexperienced builders. But during work, you should always remember about natural ventilation and leave air to ensure the movement of air flows.

Natural lining – an excellent option for filing cornice

  3. Galvanized steel. Quite good material for overhangs, provided that the steel sheets are coated with decorative polymer paints. Metal panels can be purchased in the store ready-made or made independently from roofing profiled sheets.

Galvanized steel is also used for filing overhangs, but this option is rarely found

  4. Copper. Used very rarely, mostly on religious and historical buildings. But there are options for installing such cladding on prestigious country cottages.

When to sheathe overhangs

The design of the roof overhangs is carried out simultaneously with the laying of the roof covering or immediately after its installation. In no case should you postpone finishing the overhangs – if only because the next storm can severely damage, or even completely take away the roof without wind boards and with unsewn cornices. However, you should not rush too much. You need to choose materials and fasteners in such a way that the finish will last no less than the entire roof structure. If, after a few years, the boards (panels) begin to be torn off by the wind due to incorrectly selected fasteners, you will have to re-build scaffolding for repair.

If the height of the walls of the house is more than 3.5 m, reliable scaffolding with railings will be required. (Both goats and scaffoldings are easier and cheaper to make on site from planks than to rent a prefabricated metal structure.) Installers are required to use safety belts when working.

Dimensions of overhangs

The size of the eaves overhangs can vary in width from 0.6 to 1.5 meters. In order to accurately establish the length of the roof overhang, you should familiarize yourself with the technical norms SNiP II.II-26-76 with the recommended dimensions of the eaves overhangs, depending on the technical characteristics of the roof structure. In addition, building codes regulate the type of overhang structure, depending on their purpose and type.

The dimensions of the overhangs are selected depending on the shape of the roof and the weather

But if you look at it, building codes do not provide for strict regulation of the projection of the overhang of the roof overhang on a horizontal surface. There are general recommendations for the installation of minimum overhangs, depending on the roofing material:

  1. Slate (asbestos-cement corrugated sheets) – the minimum overhang is not less than 50 mm.
  2. Ceramic tiles – the minimum overhang must be at least 70 mm.
  3. Steel roofs, profiled sheet – not less than 100 mm.

For private houses, a cornice is chosen that combines architectural expressiveness, aesthetic beauty and protective functional features. Although the installation of such a cornice overhang is financially costly and technically more difficult, many owners deliberately go for this rise in the cost of construction, since such a cornice overhang will fully justify itself during operation.

Eaves hemming options

The filing of the eaves overhang can be carried out according to the following options:

  • Hemming with siding.
  • Wood trimming is considered one of the best cornice finishing options. Pros: Natural look and beauty that cannot be achieved using non-natural materials. It is for these reasons that this type of cornice finishing is becoming more and more popular. In addition, wood is a living, organic and environmentally friendly material for exquisite finishes.
  • Copper trimming of eaves is considered the most sophisticated type of finishing. Pros: beauty, durability and naturalness, due to which this type of filing of cornices is unattainable for other analogs.

Quite often, the ends of the rafters slightly protrude beyond the bearing walls and the eaves overhang is too narrow. In such cases, the rafters are lengthened using boards with a section of 100 by 50 mm. These elements are called filly.

Extension of rafters by fillets

Go to calculations

As an example, we will consider the most difficult option – the roof is insulated with mineral wool and requires effective ventilation to remove condensate. To create a vapor barrier layer, a film based on ethylene butyl acrelate with two vapor barrier layers of polypropylene and copolymer is used.

Step 1. Attach the membrane to the inside of the attic space. The films are first fixed with a stapler, in the future technologies will be used depending on the method of covering the walls of the attic rooms. The joints are tightly glued, the outlets of chimneys and ventilation pipes are additionally sealed. The internal vapor barrier cannot go over to the eaves, it is fixed either to the walls or to the roof.

A protective membrane is attached to the inside of the rafters

Step 2. Place the support board between the rafter legs. It should be in the same plane with the facade walls, the width of the element corresponds to the step of the rafter legs, and it takes into account the dimensions of the insulation materials. Due to this size matching, the mineral wool does not need to be cut to fit the width of the niches, the work is much easier and faster, the quality of insulation is significantly increased. The supporting boards are screwed to the rafter legs with self-tapping screws or nailed, you need two fasteners on each side.

Install support boards between the rafters

Step 3. Prepare a flat base for laying the windproof and waterproof membrane, reduce the height of the rafters by the length of the cold overhang. This is done in several stages.

  1. Make cuts in the overhang rafter. The depth of the cuts should be such that the plane of the boards to be further nailed to them is at the same level as the whole rafter legs.
  2. Using a chisel or chisel, carefully remove excess pieces, level the surface of the rafters. There is no need to make it perfectly flat, these places are still covered with boards. Pay attention that their surface is at the same level or slightly below the rafter legs.

Cut the ends of the rafters

Some inexperienced developers do not pay attention to the level of the boards on the overhangs and arrive directly at the rafter legs. In this position, they are located above the plane, the membrane is bent up in this place. Condensation cannot be removed without hindrance; a large amount of water constantly accumulates at the junction.Such operating conditions of the truss system have an extremely negative effect on the durability of wooden structures.

Practical advice. The eaves overhang does not need to be insulated, the insulation must end on the support board. And it is installed opposite the Mauerlat or the facade wall.

Step 4. Decorate the eaves overhang with edged boards. They are nailed to the prepared sections of the rafter legs. During work, check the position, if the boards protrude above the plane of the legs, then the niches should be deepened. We remind you once again that the condensate should not be on the membrane for a long time, this is very important. Over time, the water starts to leak, the rafter system will get wet.

Screw the boards to the rafters

Boards can be screwed on with self-tapping screws, but it is much faster and easier to fix them with smooth nails. The load on this element is negligible, any hardware guarantees sufficient fixing strength.

Step 5. Screw the front (cornice) board into place. It must be attached to the ends of the rafter legs.During the installation of the rafter system, the ends of the legs are aligned along the rope and are located strictly in the same plane. If there are discrepancies in length, then wooden supports can be placed between the board and the legs. Just make sure they are dry and of sufficient size. Otherwise, too small supports can crack when hammering in nails, and damp ones dry out – unwanted cracks appear.

Fit frontal board

Step 6. Nail the drip. It does two things: it drains water outside the walls and holds the bottom edge of the waterproof membrane. The dropper is made of galvanized sheet steel, thickness is 0.45 mm, the upper surfaces are polymer coated. The overlap of the elements is about five centimeters, the direction of the joints does not matter.

A drip is screwed on top

Step 7. Proceed with the installation of the waterproofing windproof membrane. Depending on the type of material, it can be laid directly on the insulation or it is necessary to leave a gap to facilitate the evaporation of moisture.Work is carried out from the bottom up to the ridge, an overlap of about 10 cm, it is advisable to glue the points of contact. Some membranes have special strips with adhesives, the protective paper is removed from them and everything is ready for gluing.

Install protective membrane

A special tape should be used to attach the membrane to the dropper. Professionals recommend using materials based on butyl rubber, it retains its original adhesion parameters for a long time and guarantees reliable adhesion. The membrane is fixed in the following sequence.

  1. Clean the dropper from dust, its surface must be clean, dry and fat-free
  2. Attach tape to the edge of the element. Do not bend, the tape should not sag on the bend of the metal strip.
  3. Remove the protection, while slightly turning the edge of the membrane in the opposite direction.
  4. Align the canvas and in this position glue it to the tape as tightly as possible.

The lower edge of the membrane must adhere tightly to the drip bar

Exact adherence to the recommended technologies guarantees long-term and trouble-free use of the rafter system. For all occasions, there is no universal advice, many decisions must be made by the master on site, depending on the specific design features.

Types of profiles for filing cornice and gable overhangs

Let’s move on to the process of installing spotlights. They do not perform a particularly important constructive function, but nevertheless, you will have to show skill and accuracy here.

The fact is that if mistakes are made when filing the cornice, then at least it will look ridiculous, and in the worst case, birds will easily penetrate into the under-roof space and create problems.

Basic rules for drying a wooden house after assembling a log house

The most serious shortcoming of wood is considered to be a technological break in construction, which immediately follows the construction of a log house. Its need is explained quite simply: a significant part of the work associated with finishing, laying internal communications, performing roofing and installing door and window fillings is inappropriate to carry out before the end of the active stage of building shrinkage.

Ventilation device

To create ventilation ducts in the under-roof space, it is necessary to use bars with a thickness of at least 5 cm – only such a gap provides the necessary speed of air flow.

Step 1. Nail the vertical bars of the counter batten to the rafters. There is no need to take long lumber, make gaps every 1–1.5 m. Due to this, ventilation is improved, the air has more opportunities to bypass obstacles. The membrane was fixed to the rafter legs with a stapler, small holes appeared in these places. In order to seal them, you can glue a sealing tape to one plane.

Sealing tape is pre-attached to the bars

Practical advice.According to experienced builders, the holes from the stapler do not have any negative effect. Moisture never gets through them.

Step 2. Install the horizontal battens, the step depends on the technical parameters of the roofing materials. For soft coatings, you need to make a continuous crate of OSB boards or sheet plywood. Air is taken in through the cornice, and if its unhindered supply is not ensured, then natural ventilation will not be able to function effectively. This condition of the roof causes very unpleasant problems.

A crate is fixed on top of the vertical battens

Step 3. Close the ventilation duct with a special protective perforated tape. It has almost no negative effect on the speed of air movement and does not allow birds and insects to enter the channel. The tapes can be metal or plastic, it does not matter, these places do not penetrate UV rays.

The gap is closed with special tape

Step 4. Secure the drainage channel in place. It can be fixed with long metal hooks to the lathing or plastic holders to the curtain board.

Install brackets and gutter

This completes the work on the design of the cornice unit. If everything is done correctly, then the roof will fulfill its tasks, and the insulation will provide comfortable temperatures in the attic.

Japanese-style window decoration OknaGit

Window decoration in Japanese style

Japanese-style interior is of interest to many. But in this article we will consider only part of it, namely, window decoration. In the usual European sense, there were no windows in a traditional Japanese house. They were replaced by walls of translucent white paper. For Westerners, windows without curtains look lonely and unfinished. Let’s try to move away from the curtains and decorate the windows in a truly Japanese style, and these are no longer the usual “Japanese panels”. Renovated Japanese windows will be made according to the traditions of Zen Buddhism. Let’s try to think in Japanese … Our company offers a low price for our PVC windows.

And this means – through the contemplation of nature and comprehension of oneself and the surrounding world. Let’s try to move away from the bustle of the world and plunge into the very essence of things, physically feel inner harmony and unity with the world. Listen to the sound of the wind and the rustle of falling snowflakes. For example, in a Japanese house there can be only one vase, but in a vase there is only one flower. It is symbolic and filled with special meaning, because one flower contains the beauty of all flowers on Earth. The Japanese style is close to minimalism, but far from the traditional European minimalism.

Japanese home is one with nature. The walls of the house were made sliding, so that at any time the owners could admire the garden, where each plant and each object had a special meaning. For these reasons, the facades of houses were not considered as architectural elements, and the surrounding landscape served as a plot in the palace painting.

Now let’s start creating a window decor that will embody the principles outlined above. Let’s call the decor “Samurai and the Girl in the Spring Garden”. Imagine the stern face of a samurai looking down. And she – a whitewashed face, coral lips and black, shiny, like silk, hair.

We need a round cornice. One side of the cornice should be round, the other should be spear-shaped. The tip of the eaves-spear can be decorated with tassels. We drape the cornice with fabric – not just like a classic lambrequin, but in the form of elastic folds. The fabric is attached with Velcro for easy washing or replacement. From both sides of the “spear” hang strips of drapery cornice. The ends may be asymmetrical. Now let’s move on to the very essence – these are sakura flowers. Flowers, preferably made of fabric, not plastic, are wound on a long strong thread or fishing line. Uniformity is inappropriate here. There can be one flower on a thread, or many. We attach the resulting threads to the “spear” cornice. It turns out an airy floral arrangement. In the end, we tie metal sticks to the ends of the thread, as in the “chime of the wind”.

Do not be discouraged if you could not buy ready-made sakura flowers. They can be done manually.Flowers even made of paper will do. To do this, take a sheet of paper, give it the shape of a square, bend it 3-4 times. After that, we cut out the shape of a petal along the edge and put several such leaves on top of each other. We crush the middle. Done! The length of the threads is almost up to the windowsill. And how the quiet ringing of Japanese bells is soothing … The neon or halogen illumination built into the ceiling will help to complete the composition and at the same time to accentuate it.

Do not forget that in our company “Windows Guide” you can buy inexpensive windows of high quality!

Overview of curtain rods

To decorate a window beautifully, it is not enough to buy curtains that perfectly complement the interior of the room.It is important to choose a reliable and beautiful cornice on which they will be fixed. When choosing a curtain rod for a room, the following factors must be considered:

  • The style of the interior and its textile decor;

  • The number of rows for placing curtains, tulle, lambrequin;

  • The shape and area of the window;

  • Room area;

  • The total mass of curtains;

  • Eaves design and material;

  • The method of attaching the canvases to the cornice.

Type of eaves fastening

By the type of fastening, the cornices are divided into ceiling and wall. Some ceiling curtain rods can be attached to the wall using special brackets. Some wall moldings can also be fixed to the ceiling – this will require the use of additional hardware.

Curtain rod length

The length of the cornice is selected depending on the size of the window opening. For living rooms, cornices with a length of about 3 m are usually used, for kitchens – narrower options. Telescopic cornices are convenient in that they allow you to precisely set the required length of the cornice, depending on the size of the window. Such models are suitable for custom-sized windows. They will also be convenient when you change your place of residence – it will not be difficult to adjust such a cornice to the required width of the window opening in a new home. For windows with a width of more than 3 m, it is possible to create compound cornices of greater length using additional connecting elements.

String cornices

These are thin cables stretched between two brackets in one or more rows. This type of cornice is still used due to its low cost and ease of installation. They are suitable for light curtains made of tulle, organza, muslin. They can be used in suburban conditions when there is no need for complex and heavy curtains or rental housing.

Tire (profile) cornices

Such curtain rods are made of metal or plastic. They can be adapted for wall or ceiling mounting. Plastic profile models as a base have a plastic profile with one, two or three rails on which the curtain mounts slide.

  • Flexible ceiling profiles are suitable for rooms with irregular perimeters, irregularly shaped windows, niches and bay windows.

  • Rigid plastic profile structures are most popular due to their low price and practicality.

You can use both an independent profile cornice, usually fixed on the ceiling, and models, the design of which provides for a complete set with a decorative strip or baguette. The latter option allows you to easily arrange the cornice in accordance with the general style and color scheme of the interior. Plastic trims offer many design options. Made of polymer materials, they can imitate valuable wood species, metal, and other textures, which makes it possible to use such cornices in modern or classic interiors.

It is better to choose profiles with a wall thickness of at least 1 mm, having factory holes for fastening the structure with the possibility of adding a strip or baguette. Such curtain rods are able to withstand a fairly large weight of the fabric, will not be damaged during fastening and allow you to vary the style of window decoration. The cornice, complemented by a delighter, allows you to draw the curtains in such a way that one of the canvases overlaps the other – thus, light and windows will not penetrate into the gap between the curtains. The decorative strip can be included with the cornice or purchased separately. Metal tire curtain rods are most often made from aluminum. They are stronger than plastic ones and can withstand heavy loads. The disadvantage of metal models is the inability to create non-linear structures, decorate bay windows and bends. Metal tire curtain rods, as a rule, are more refined than plastic counterparts, they look more solid and expensive. Natural wood, metal inserts, etc. are used in their design.details that give them a stylish look.

Round cornices

Such designs have been used for a long time and still do not lose their relevance. A tubular rod acts as a basis, which is attached to the wall with special support brackets. Curtains in such designs are attached to rings or eyelets. Such a cornice can be performed in a single-row or double-row version. Round cornices can be:

  • Plastic are lightweight structures.Plastic can be styled like wood, metal and other materials. The advantage of such cornices is the lightness and variety of design solutions.

  • Wooden – such cornices look more noble and luxurious. They are heavier than plastic ones and are much more expensive. The wooden bar does not provide for overloading, therefore it is not suitable for too heavy and dense curtains.

  • Metal – this is the most practical type of curtain rods.Metal curtain rods can have various coatings, complemented by various types of decor and fittings, which allows you to give the window decoration a certain style and originality. Such cornices can withstand heavy loads. When choosing them, you should pay attention to the reliability and quality of the fasteners.

Round cornices can also be used in the design of non-standard windows – to change the linear configuration, special corner transition elements are used that connect the straight sections of the rods. When choosing rings for metal curtain rods, it is better to prefer models, the inner side of which is made of plastic. This allows the rings to produce minimal noise when moving along the boom, and also to minimize friction between the parts against each other.

how to hang on a window and balcony, without drilling, with your own hands

Aesthetics of a window opening with beautiful curtains will not leave anyone indifferent. Still, there are situations when it is not possible to decorate a room or loggia in the traditional way, you have to hang curtains without a cornice. It is suggested that you familiarize yourself with all the methods, even if it is a temporary fixing or a kind of curtains for non-standard windows.

Curtains are an indispensable attribute of a living space.

When you don’t have a baguette at hand, but you need to hang curtains, the question arises of how you can do without a cornice and quickly hang a window with your own hands.

Ways to decorate windows in a living room in an original way, options with and without a cornice

Non-standard approaches to window decoration are needed not only by interior designers. The purchase of housing in need of repair is often associated with the fact that there are no baguettes or there is nowhere to mount them. It is not always possible to drill the fragile material of wall decoration; you have to make repairs. On the glassed-in balcony, dilapidated frames literally crumble when trying to hammer in nails and pull at least the line under the curtains.

You can hang curtains on regular clothes hooks or Velcro on the strip.

Helpful advice! Before hanging light curtains without a curtain rod, it is recommended to check whether the “string” will hold the dowels in the wall or other base.If they do not hold, use a temporary attachment to the window frame, for example, with Velcro tape.

To make the composition look beautiful, you need to think over the style of the curtain.

It happens that there are only curtains without curtains, since they have not yet decided on their style and method of fastening. Sometimes it is appropriate to use a ceiling mount method. In the bedroom, the veil falling from above, complemented by diode lighting, looks very romantic.

Large, interesting design hooks are selected to decorate the curtains.

The canopy over the bed is also often attached to the ceiling without a baguette. This is a traditional decor for a children’s bedroom in a specific interior style. Temporary decoration with a lightweight velcro fabric is not reliable. This method is not suitable for those who have small children or pets who like to play with interior textiles.

Massive cornices are not needed when installing so-called “floating” ceilings. Concealed fastening of curtains – a stretched metal string behind the harpoon mechanism for mounting a stretching canvas, illuminated along the entire perimeter.

The only drawback of this method is that the curtain cannot be moved from one edge to the other.

For some types of curtains, it is not possible to immediately purchase the mount of the required configuration. For example, a semicircular ceiling cornice for a bay window or a triple rail for Japanese shielded canvases on an electric drive, controlled from a remote control. Difficulties can arise with the curtain of the attic window with a large slope of the roof or the panoramic space of a loft apartment.

This way you can create a beautiful composition.

Options without cornice when decorating balcony windows

Often, before the onset of the warm season, the townspeople have to reopen the insulation, thinking about how to fix the curtains on the balcony without a cornice. When there are only aluminum frames and panoramic windows in front of your eyes, you have to be very creative.

They are hung by loops, ribbons on hooks with a small allowance for a beautiful sagging of the fabric.

Traditionally, curtain textiles are hung along the entire glazing or broken into several canvases, if it is a double balcony for 2-3 rooms.

Attention! The difficulty of light temporary attachment to the frame of the loggia is that the curtains can interfere with opening the vents (transoms) inside the balcony space. We’ll have to fix the textiles on the fishing line directly to the plastic double-glazed windows.

Convenience of such fixation – the curtain can be quickly removed and washed if desired.

Light veil, when no string is available, can be attached to thick fishing line and large decorative nails. They can be hammered in at the corners between the frame and the window opening. Short curtains often have to be fixed from below in the same way, but this is done with blind windows without vents.

Curtains help to create coziness in the room, decorate it.

A good way is to temporarily attach it to double-sided tape under a false cornice, for which any piece of light plastic or aluminum profile is suitable.

Curtains can also be hung with Velcro.

How to fix curtains in an original way without a traditional cornice, ideas with examples and photos

How can tulle be hung on the balcony without a cornice? The most reliable way is “string”. Light cornice in the form of a thin metal thread. If the transoms are swung outwards, then the common metal base, stretched over the entire balcony space, will simplify the curtain with light curtains.

Hanging them without a curtain rod is easy.

Among the available methods on how to hang curtains on a balcony without a cornice with your own hands, suckers are often mentioned. They should have holes for fishing line or metal “string”.

A good idea of a “baguette-less” method of fastening – on hooks, if the curtains are equipped with hinges or eyelets. Sometimes this is the only possibility of fixing along the beveled line of the kitchen window space, bay window or stairs.

The result is an original and non-standard composition.

Pay attention! The string is elastic, prone to sagging. It is unacceptable for the curtains to be pushed towards the center – the metal string will sag.It is better to push the curtains to the edges of the balcony, it will be quite aesthetically pleasing.

This is a reliable and practical mounting option, and in the case of non-standard window openings, it is often the only one.

The choice of fastening depends not only on what the light curtains are attached to, but on the style and type of fabric. If you use textiles on eyelet rings, decorative hooks for clothes are suitable as a basis. They can be nailed to the window frame or beam of the upper residential level of a wooden cottage without an attic, as in the photo of curtains on hooks without cornices.

Hooks should be selected on the basis that they have to solve two problems: functional and decorative.

How to hang roller blinds and blinds on a window without a cornice

For those who do not really like to hang curtains, experts recommend roller blinds and blinds. They come in different types, horizontal and vertical. Most often, when buying in an assembly, targeted installation is guaranteed.

There are times when you have to do the fastening yourself.

These two types of window decoration have something in common – the absence of a traditional cornice, and yet they require fixing. Roller blinds and blinds are usually mounted at the junction of the wall and ceiling surface – according to the roller shutter principle, drilling is indispensable.

Roller blinds should be moved up and down using a special device, reminiscent of a roller blinds “lifter” with a chain.

This rod can also be attached to the top of the window frame, if there is anything for it.

Lightweight blinds can be attached directly to double-glazed windows if they are “blind” or fixed. When mounted on a sash, each transom will have to be opened together with the blinds.

Roller blinds are mounted on a special shaft with guides. The equipment can be screwed to the frame, but there is a risk of damage to the plastic frame.

On glazed balconies with wooden frames, there are usually no problems with screws.

Sometimes it is advisable to “firmly” set the base on the glue or use an adhesive tape platform with a double-sided adhesive base. It is recommended that you familiarize yourself with the video on how to independently fix light horizontal blinds to a plastic frame.

Examples and photos of original ideas on how to quickly hang curtains in the country without a cornice

A window without a curtain looks wretched and lonely, even if there is no one to hide from in a building or in a country house in a deserted place. In the absence of cornices, it is often necessary to use unconventional methods of decorating window openings, regardless of whether it is possible to drill walls and ceilings.

Large hooks are suitable for thick and heavy curtains, multi-layer options, small, graceful for light tulle curtains.

A cornice or a baguette is the most reliable way of curtains, regardless of the style of the curtains. There are massive multi-layer types of curtains for which a classic baguette is used, but they are not suitable for temporary fastening, although their beauty is impeccable.

The design of the hooks should match the style of the room as a whole.

Instead of a cornice rod, a thick metal rod or a decorative branch is sometimes used.

The easiest way is to sew a light curtain with your own hands with a fold into which you can stretch any base for tension, the base is not visible behind the fabric:

  • plait or twine;
  • lightweight aluminum profile;
  • strong fishing line;
  • piece of wire or cable.

Curtain loops can be cut or sewn on.

The style may be the simplest – two straight panels, but a dense assembly and side grips or an oblique cut will unusually decorate the window. It remains to make holes on the sides for the dowels and screw in the screws on which the cord is pulled.

General requirements for the hinges: they must be strong, hold the curtain securely on the hook, harmoniously fit into the design of the window.

For light fastening, it is undesirable to use heavy fabrics and curtains to the floor. There are many lightweight fabrics and interesting varieties of short curtains that can be attached directly to the glass with transparent silicone suction cups.

When the top edge of the window opening rests against the ceiling, there simply may not be room for baguettes.

On arched windows, curtains on hooks without a cornice are gaining popularity. Of course, you can glue the curtain directly to the frame with double-sided tape, but it is unlikely to work out beautifully. Regular screws are much better than thick nails. They are needed at the top on the sides of the window under an impromptu “string” that can ruin the wall.

Braid, various cords, metal, plastic, wooden rings are also suitable materials.

Even if there is no alternative to nails, try to hammer them in where the cornices are to be attached in the future. The decision on how to fix the curtains without a cornice is up to the owners, but here we considered the most practical methods.

This can be done by yourself or with the help of a designer.

Installation of gypsum curtain rods, broaching according to the template

Hello friends, I am very glad to see you all on the blog “build a house”. I remember in this article on how to plaster corners, I promised you another explosive article. And I prepared it for you. By the way, how do you like that article? If you have any questions or, on the contrary, you want to add something, do not keep it to yourself, be sure to share. In the meantime, we will consider the device of cornices , belts and ceiling fillets, which can uniquely decorate the facade of the house.

Facade decoration

Various decorations can be made on the facade of any house: ceiling fillets, belts or plaster cornices .

Lime-gypsum mixtures are used to pull the belts and cornices, while the covering mortar is prepared without adding sand to it. 1: 3 is being prepared, i.e. gypsum for lime paste. Gypsum must be sieved through a sieve.

The coating should be of medium thickness and applied in a continuous layer. When pulling large architectural elements, it is best to use a grout mixed with fine sand. The pulling process consists of the following operations: throwing in the mortar, pulling out the element with the roughly cut edge of the template, processing the decoration by re-pulling the template of the blunt part of the edge, cutting the corners.Large stretches are performed by 2-3 people, and small ones can be done by one.

Lime-gypsum cornice

I want to warn you right away that the draft of the lime-gypsum cornice is quite laborious and slows down the plastering process, so it would be wiser to install prefabricated cornices. Keep in mind that plaster or alabaster is added to the plaster, and these materials are washed out by water, therefore, the cornice of the facade must be protected from rain by a roof canopy, or in another way.

Plaster cornices and templates (click on the picture to enlarge)

Without adding gypsum to the solution, you can also pull out the decoration, but this is too difficult. Moreover, the basting comes out thick and takes a long time to set. Gypsum reduces the setting time of the solution by about 10 minutes, which makes it possible to make voluminous and heavy plans of gypsum cornices. If you cannot do without these architectural elements, then you can try using lighter decorations, for example of expanded polystyrene concrete , which are fixed on the facade and plastered over with ordinary plaster.

The device of the pads, how to make them

Who does not know, paduga is architectural curved (concave) surface, decorating the transition from the vertical plane of the wall to the ceiling.

It is easy to construct the padugs with an ordinary trowel, giving the solution applied to the husk the required shape. You can build a shaped half-grater and move it along the husk to get the desired poduga by moving it along the solution. The stretching can be repeated several times until the formation of a perfect, without shells and tubercles of the arch.We nail a piece of board or slats to the shaped half-grater. It turns out like a sled. And we attach the rule to the wall. The scraper sled will follow the rule. In conclusion, it remains only to edit the padugs with a small trowel.

Belts and cornices are pulled out with templates along wooden guide rails, which are fixed with plaster mortar or special inventory holders. Templates are used straight or angular, arranged at an angle of 45 0 to the wall. When pulling curtain rods, special templates are used. They are made from wood. And so that the templates do not quickly wear out on the plaster, they are additionally wrapped in a “steel apron” (which can be made of roofing steel).

Device of a template for plaster cornice

Before starting the process, the profile of the cornice is drawn on paper, then this drawing is transferred to a sheet of steel and wood. One side of the cut profile is beveled, i.e. cut at an angle of 20-30 0 . This side is called “on the shine”, and the other uncut – “on the sdir”.Stretching is performed both “on the gloss” and “on the slicker”. To the unbeveled end of the profile board with screws or boot nails, we nail a template made of sheet steel, protecting the tree from early wear. The size of the steel template is made slightly larger than the wooden template, but only so that the working edge of the roofing steel protrudes 1-2 mm above the tree (i.e., by the thickness of the cover, for lime-gypsum solutions) and 5-7 mm (for decorative solutions).

Assembling the eaves, pulling along a wooden template (click on the picture to enlarge)

A profile board is nailed to the sled from below and additionally fastened with slopes on both sides. The slopes support the board in the slide and serve as handles for holding the template when pulling the cornices.

Crowning cornices

Crown cornices located on the facades under the roof can be of different sizes and shapes. It is most convenient to pull them out with a large template in one step, regardless of size. For cornices, cement and cement-lime mortars are used on finely sifted sand.

For tubers, the rules are hung in such a way that their ends extend beyond the corner of the wall by a slightly greater length of the slide. In some cases, the upper rule is carried out beyond the corner of the wall by 80, or even 100 mm, which allows you to pull the cornices together with the outer corners.

Rule suspension options

Option one.
The upper rule is fixed to the plank, which is nailed to the log or to the timber laid in the roof gutter. We hang the lower rule on the wall.

Option two.
We pull out according to the two lower rules, without the upper one.The rules are fixed on wooden supports, which are placed at a distance of 2-3 m from each other. The distance between the rules is 300-400 mm. So we make the template slide 400-500 mm. It is difficult to move the template according to the two bottom rules, but with this option you will not have to remove the roof. For better sliding, the rules can be lubricated with a sliding lubricant (thick oil, grease, etc.).

Before pulling the cornice out, apply a layer of soil to the upper part of the walls. Near one of the corners to the ceiling and to the wall, by level, we apply a template and leave a mark on the wall for the location of the lower rule.We also leave a label at the top. We repeat this operation in all corners. We draw the marks with the end of the trowel.

The lower rule is firmly fastened with nails so that it does not move while pulling the cornice. We fasten the upper one so that the template can be inserted and removed from both ends. I repeat: we fix the lower rule firmly, the upper one loosely. Next, we insert a template between them and draw it from one corner to another: it should freely pass its path, but at the same time not hang out. Having made sure, we fix the upper rule.

Plaster cornice device

Its design begins by inserting a template into the rules. If suddenly there is too much space between the profile board and the plaster, then on the way of the template you need to fill in nails and braid them with wire. This will keep the plaster in place. We scrape off the seized soil on the path of the template and moisten it with water.

The prepared cornice plaster solution is applied between the rules. After each throwing of the plaster mortar, we draw a template over it.Move the template with the steel-bound side forward – “on the sdir”. It is better to do this together. One moves the template, the other holds the falcon under the template and collects the falling solution, which is immediately used for greasing. The plaster mortar is prepared on river sand, and when mixed with lime paste it acquires a gray tint. The pulling with the gray solution continues until the pull is finally formed. This stretching process is referred to as “on gray”.

If by the end of the working day it is not possible to pull out the traction, then the next day, after scribbling it and moistening it with water, apply the next portion of the solution to it and continue pulling the cornice. After each pulling, rinse the template and profile board with water.

After stretching, let the traction dry a little for 7-10 minutes for the fight and the expansion of the plaster. Then we sprinkle the grabbed soil lightly with water and stretch it with force over it with a template, that is, pressing down on the thrust itself. When pulling the template, we lead the shackled side forward. We do this several times in order to cut off a layer of mortar no more than 2 mm thick. Thus, leaving a gap between the profile board and the ground. It is needed to apply a coating layer. In addition, pulling “on the sdir” guarantees further free movement of the template.

Thoroughly rinse the template and the rule, and clean the mortar box from the gray solution or take another one. We prepare a white covering lime-gypsum mortar. To give it plasticity, let it grab slightly, immediately mix it quickly and apply a thin layer on the elongated soil of the traction moistened with water.

Now we do not need to cut the solution, but spread it along the cornice. To do this, we lead the template forward with the already beveled wooden side, that is, “on the gloss”. We carry out two or three times. We lead the template without pauses along the entire length without stopping. After each pulling, we take out the template and rinse it, especially the working profile. Stretching “on white” should be especially perfect and accurate.

Rule-template scheme, for the installation of a gypsum cornice

When pulling rods from a cement or lime-cement mortar, stretching is not performed “on a sdir”, since these solutions do not expand in volume after setting.

Stretching the cover with the same solutions on finely sifted sand. Because coarse sand will not allow you to cleanly stretch sharp corners in the rods. But when pulling, the template should be guided like “on the gloss”. The mortar should be applied in layers no thicker than 10 mm. Lime-cement mortar sets very slowly, so the elongation should be calculated so that some other work can be done during setting. Do not under any circumstances rejuvenate the mortar layer with cement to accelerate the setting.

After pulling out the cornice and setting the cover, you can start cutting the inner corners, which turned out to be understretched a little more than half the length of the slide. This is done in two ways: the standard template is converted to an angular one or using a wooden ruler with an end cut off at an angle of 45 0 , to which a steel strip is nailed – cutter .

When pulling the inner corners with a ruler into an angle 10-15 mm below the level of the cornice, a soil solution is applied.Hands and a trowel give it the desired shape. After the soil grasps a little, we proceed to cutting the corners – we cut off the solution with a ruler. We attach the ruler to the previously elongated decoration (as shown in the figure) and slowly move the cutter forward along it, trying to keep the ruler straight, and its cutter does not sink into the thickness of the solution. A ruler cuts off excess mortar from the corner. We finish the rest with our hands and a grater. Then we apply a cover on the ground, overlapping the main thrust. After incomplete setting of the covering solution, repeat the steps.

The ruler cuts off excess mortar

When working with an angular template, the same actions are performed as when working with a regular template.

After cutting the mortar, the rods placed on two adjacent walls must clearly converge in the hull of the corner. The separated corners do not come out quite the right shape and are a little rough, so they are brought to mind with small graters.

The process of pulling belts and cornices out of the mortar thrown onto the wall is laborious, therefore it is rarely used nowadays.

Eaves from expanded polystyrene concrete (PSB)

Today, a huge variety of lightweight, monolithic and prefabricated expanded polystyrene concrete (PSB) cornices has appeared in construction stores. Such cornices are fixed directly to the wall or to the primer with glue, special vinyl fungi or self-tapping screws.
