Bias binding for a bound edge on your curtains and drapes

A bias binding (also known as a bound edge or edge binding) is one of those assets which many people who make their own drapes don’t use. This a is great pity, because it’s easy to do and gives a great finish to drapery elements.

It’s useful for items such as bedspreads and tablecloths, as well as swags, cascades (tails) and valances. It’s particularly effective when a contrasting fabric is used.

You’ll often have plain fabric left over from other jobs you’ve done, and if you have enough and it’s a suitable color it can be used for bound edges.

Strips of binding fabric cut on the true cross for use on curved edges. Join strips by machine seaming as shown.

There are two simple rules to remember.

If you’re applying a bias binding to any straight edge, cut the fabric for the binding on the straight grain, vertically or horizontally.

For a curved edge, cut the fabric on the true cross (45 degrees to the selvage). Obviously these can only be a certain length, depending on the width of the fabric. Longer lengths are made by joining strips at right angles.

The total width you need for the binding will be four times the width of the bound edge.

For most situations keep your bias binding narrow, about ¾ inches (2.0cms). When cutting for side edges, such as a drape panel, cut strips as long as the cut length of the drape so there are no joins.

For top and base edges, cut the number of strips to match the number of widths for the item in question. So if the binding is for the top edge of a valance which consists of four widths, cut four strips so the joins will match the joins of the valance.

For all trims, the width of the fabric will be 4 times the binding width.

Note: If you bind an edge on a treatment you can leave the raw edges because the binding will cover them. So for example, if you’re making a swag, you don’t need to hand sew the edges neatly. You could simply machine them together and use the binding to cover the join.

Sewing the binding to the fabric

The illustration shows how to attach the bias binding to the edge of an item consisting of a main fabric and lining (you could include interlining as well). You could machine sew all the layers of fabric at the same time, or apply the binding after the others have been sewn together.

Make sure you sew the reverse side of the trim onto the front of the main fabric, so the correct side of the trim is visible when it is turned over to the back.

View from the lining side

When the trim is in place, fold it over to the back, and fold the turning under (see previous illustration) so it mirrors the turning on the front.

For a neat finish, fold the turning under so it just covers the machined seam. Pin it in position, and hand slip stitch to finish off.

Bias binding edges are a very useful addition to your drapery making options. They are easy to make, and give a great finish to your projects

Shop Curtain Heading Tape Online

Can I purchase curtain heading tape at Spotlight?

Yes, Spotlight stocks everything you can possibly need to make your own curtains at home, including curtain fabric, lining, heading tape in different sizes and all other accessories. Depending on the weight of your curtain fabric, the size of your curtains and the type of heading you would like to have on your curtains, different types of heading fabric can be used.

Which types of heading tape are available from Spotlight?

We stock a number of different curtain heading tapes, including:

  • Mini pencil pleat curtain tape: This is ideal for lightweight curtains where you would like to have a tight gather at the top. It can also be used for sheer curtains and nets.
  • 3-Pocket pencil pleat curtain tape: This is a slightly wider heading tape which allows you to choose the height at which you place your curtain hooks. This enables you to hide the curtain track by placing the hooks at the lower level, and can also be useful if your curtains have either shrunk in the wash or have become too long due to their weight over time, as you can simply adjust the height of the hooks.
  • Deep pleat curtain heading tape: This curtain heading tape is used to create formal looking curtains with deep, fixed pleats. It requires special metal deep curtain hooks.
  • Eyelet curtain heading tape: As the name suggests, this curtain heading tape, which comes complete with rings to finish off your curtain, will allow you to make eyelet curtains. Other heading tapes available in the collection include Austrian blind sheer tape, Buckram curtain heading tape and a simple one-pocket gather heading tape.

How much curtain heading tape will I need?

Ideally, you will need one continuous length of heading tape for every curtain, and the length of your heading tape will need to be as wide as the curtain fabric is before it is gathered, plus a few cms or inches extra to fold over at the sides of the curtain to stop the ends from fraying. Curtain heading tape is simply sewn onto the back of your curtain and gathered to the required width of your window, except in the case of triple pleat or deep curtain pleats where the width of the curtain needs to be fixed beforehand.

What else is available in the curtain heading tape range?

The range also includes double-sided tape in 9, 12 and 18mm widths, as well as different types of jute webbing and stretch webbing.

Curtains may look really tricky but they are easy to sew!

If you think about it the seams of curtains are all straight, so if you can use a tape measure and sew in a straight line, you can make curtains. Successful curtain making is all about accurate measuring and cutting – get both of those right and you’re on your way.  Curtains are only as complicated as you want them to be.  Just start simple, ideally with a plain fabric, and progress as your confidence improves.

How to save money when sewing a pair of curtains

Firstly, look out for sales and offers (like the one above from Terry’s!) Also, choosing a plain fabric will mean you don’t have to faff about with pattern matching, which can get complicated If you do choose a fabric that has large motifs or a bold repeated design. You need to buy extra to accommodate the motifs and allow you to match up any prints on the separate curtain panels. It’s a good idea to take your window measurements into the fabric shop so you can make any additional calculations.

The cheapest (and easiest) curtains to make are tab top. The panels aren’t as gathered so they use up less fabric than a pair made with header tape.

Top tips for making curtains

We share our top tips and techniques needed for making a traditional lined pair of curtains with a tape top.

MEASURING CURTAINS

Sizing and measuring is the most essential aspect of curtain making. Accuracy is vital if you want to avoid results that are too short, long or just plain sloppy looking. The measurements that you need to take depend on the final appearance that you are looking to create. You will also need a notepad and pencil and a metal tape measure. Here’s how to get it right.

THE WIDTH

The measurements for curtains that will sit on a pole or run on a track will be taken on the wall surrounding the window. A track or pole is usually 10cm longer than the window on each side – this space is to accommodate the volume of fabric when the curtains are pulled open. For symmetry, this track or pole will usually sit around 10cm above the window. Measure the length of the track or the pole, or the position where the track or pole will be affixed – 10cm wider on each side, and 10cm, above the window.

THE LENGTH

Place the tape measure in line with the top of the track (or where the track will be positioned) and measure to the position you would like the lower edge of the curtain to fall – either on or just below the windowsill, or to the floor.

CALCULATIONS FOR THE FABRIC

Starting with the width measurement, add 2.5cm to each side to accommodate hems – if you are having two curtains, you will need to add this to each side of both the curtain panels. To the length measurement, you will need to add 5cm-8cm to accommodate the upper section (which will be secured to the heading tape) and 15cm to accommodate the lower hem.

When cutting your fabric, it’s vital that your fabric is lying flat, and is absolutely straight and square to the grain before you begin. Take care not to stretch the fabric out of shape while you work

Want pleats? For pencil or French pleats, the width of your fabric should be two and a half to three times your measured width. For French pleats you will also need to add 20cm to the drop.

THE LINING

Adding a lining will give a proper professional finish and provide better insulation against light and noise. The calculations for lining fabrics are also made from the initial measurements. This is worked out by adding 5cm to the upper section and 15cm to the lower section. The width of the fabric needs to be around 2-5cm narrower than the main fabric, to ensure that the lining sits neatly to the back of the curtain when it is seamed into place. If you are making two or more curtain panels for your window, simply repeat this process for each panel.

ATTACHING THE LINING

Place the lining on to the fabric with the right sides facing. Align one of the side sections and pin in place. Secure together with a 2.5cm seam allowance. Repeat for the second side. The lining fabric is narrower than the curtain fabric, so draw the lining fabric over to meet the second raw edge of the main fabric. Once the lining has been secured on both sides, turn through and press neatly. There will be a neat band of main fabric at each side on the back of the curtains to prevent the lining from rolling round and being visible on the front when the curtains are hung.

SECURING THE HEADING TAPE

The heading tape, the woven strip stitched to the top of the curtain fabric, needs to be around 5cm longer than the measurement for each curtain panel. Along the upper edge of the curtain, fold over 4-6cm of fabric towards the lining, turn the raw edges under and pin in place. Position the heading tape along the lower edge of the folded section with 2. 5cm of tape extending at either end of the curtain. Hold the cords of the heading tape away from the woven band and pin into position. Use a straight machine stitch to secure into position along the upper and lower sections of the woven band, being careful not to catch the cords in the stitches. When stitching the header tape, take care not to catch the cords

For floor-length curtains, we suggest curtains 1.5cm longer than floor-length. If your floors are uneven, make sure you measure each side of the window and choose the longest measurement. For sill length curtains, we suggest either 15cm below the sill or 1-2cm above it.

GATHERING AND HANGING

Once the tape is secured, knot the cords on the edge of the header tape that will be the outer edge when the curtain is hung, and begin to pull the cords. This will draw up the fabric along the heading tape. Check with a tape measure to ensure that you draw up the curtain to the correct width for the curtain panel for the window and tie a loose knot – you can always make adjustments to the amount gathered later. Distribute the gathers in the fabric neatly along the length of the curtain and insert the curtain hooks along the length of the heading tape. Once the hooks are in place, secure to the curtain track.

HEMMING

Once all the panels are gathered and hung onto the curtain track, secure and neaten the lower hem. There will be around 10cm of fabric extending beyond the desired position of the hem. Fold this fabric in towards the lining and pin in place. Remove the curtains from the track, work along the length of the hem, measuring to ensure that the fabric folded for the hem is even along the length. To reduce bulk along this lower edge, trim the lining fabric so that it sits neatly inside the crease at the base of the hem, and turn the raw edges of the main fabric in to neaten. Work along the fold with a neat hand or machine hemming stitch to secure along the length to finish the curtains. Press the lengths of the curtains – being careful not to press creases into the gathers. Tuck the excess cord neatly into the loops on the heading tape and re-hang the finished curtains.

THE PERFECT DROP

Taking the time to hang curtains before hemming ensures they fit the window exactly as you want them to, and allows you to make any adjustments while they’re in position. To get the best results, let them hang for a few days before pinning. This allows any creases to drop out, so the fabric is relaxed into position ready to hem.

These three curtain tutorials are perfect for beginners, let us know how you get on if you are planning to make your own curtains.  We also have a Pinterest Board packed full of tutorials for making curtains and blinds that you may want to check out for even more inspiration and some more challenging curtains with ruffles and panels!

Three curtain tutorials to try

In this hidden back tab curtain tutorial from Kelly of ‘View Along the Way” – Kelly takes you step by step through sewing up a pair of curtains just like this. They look great and she has a great method for creating the tabs at the back of the curtains using wide bias tape.

Just read all the comments on her post to see how many people have loved her fun but very detailed tutorial!

Tab top curtains are perhaps the most simple curtains to make for a novice.  Amanda from the fabulous UK dressmaking blog ‘KitchyCoo’ says of her own tab top curtain tutorial “It will take you longer to figure out the measurements than make the actual curtains!” whilst Amanda doesn’t show step by step images as she had already sewn these curtains up, she does explain the process so even a beginner making something on their machine for the very first time could keep up!

In this tutorial blogger Gina makes sewing up curtains even more simple than sewing tab top curtains by using curtain clips, she shows on a small scale piece of fabric exactly how to create a neat finish to your curtains, effectively just sewing two rectangles and adding clips – what could be easier (well all easy except ironing so much fabric which is never fun!)  Be sure to press any curtains you make properly so they look the best they possibly can – really simple curtain tutorial

Privacy Shade Upgrade — Vantastic Media

If you’ve been following our van buildout, you probably know by now that we can’t sew. But privacy in our home was one of our top priorities (even higher than having a bed), so a first goal was to make some privacy shades for Pebs.

We had four windows initially: two on the slider door ones and two on the rear doors. Eventually we also added a sunroof, but we like the natural light that it provides so left it mostly clear. (We’re looking to add two half slider windows for the bed area…stay tuned!)

We had pretty specific designs in mind from the get go:

1. Complete blackout

We want curtains that are completely black, so if anyone peeks in they won’t be able to see anything. This is for privacy and safety, since we have a relatively light tint on our windows and didn’t want people to see inside of our van while parked. (Given a second chance, we’d have gone with the limo tint.)

2. No light leak

We use our house lights frequently at night. We also stealth camp a lot. So we wanted to avoid any light leaking from the van in case someone walked by and noticed.

3. Modular

Modular: the coverings and the inside components are separate, in that the covering acts almost as a pillow case. This allows us to swap innards depending on our needs: Reflectix for the summer, insulation such as fleece or Thinsulate for the winter. We can also remove the inside component altogether, allowing us to pack the blinds in a very small space.

To make the curtains, we enlisted our super crafty aunt (Thanks Aunt Nancy!!!).

List of items that we got to make the curtains:

  1. Black vinyl from Joanne Fabric, which is washable, anti-mildew and flame resistant. (Cordova in black looks really nice too, but is a lot more expensive).
  2. Ceramic block magnets from Home Depot. (Not recommended)
  3. Reflectix and matching tape

We first cut a piece of Reflectix to cover the front and rear windows. The easiest way to do this is to measure the rough dimensions of each window and cut out a rectangular chunk. We then taped the chunk to the window and trimmed accordingly.

Take note that the windows have a raised rubber seal, so in order for the curtains to attach to the metal via magnets the shades need to be a little bigger than the actual window (this is where we tripped up…).

The Reflectix then served as a template to make the black coverings.

Our aunt did an incredible job with the pillowcase covering. She added a velcro opening on one side so that we can put in the inside material (or take it out).

We originally used 3M double-sided tape to tape the ceramic block magnets directly on the Reflectix, and our aunt poked a few holes through the coverings to expose the magnets. The tape worked beautifully. The magnets? Not sure much.

The problem

We cut the Reflectix too fitted. After the pillow case went on, and combined with weak ceramic block magnets, the blinds wouldn’t stay put because the raised rubber trim on the window was getting in the way.

We were already traversing Canada at that point, so we didn’t have the luxury to stop and fix the coverings. Our immediate solution was to tape more ceramic magnets that we had on hand using Gorilla tape. It worked, but it looked god awful.

What are curtain garters and how to make them Construction portal

What garters to choose for curtains in the house (40 photo ideas)

In order to decorate simply and at the same time elegantly, curtains in their own home, many prefer special ties. With their help, curtains are beautifully decorated, the appearance of which may have already become boring to the owner and inhabitants of the dwelling. In addition, garters can not only be bought in a store, but also made with your own hands, which will add even more originality to its appearance. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with the fact that you have not done such things before. After all, there are special step-by-step master classes, thanks to which, even without experience and skills in this matter, you can cope with this task with ease. Well, what we recommend that you take care of is to purchase the necessary materials in advance.

The nuances should be taken into account

To get an original and very beautiful holder for curtains, you should consider:

• Garter materials should be in harmony with the curtains of your windows.

• The holder is made for a specific, certain type of room, as well as taking into account the design of the curtains.

• Make sure that garters are essential.

Therefore, it is worth saying that the best option is exactly the one that is recommended by the manufacturer of the curtains themselves. At the same time, not every factory provides for the manufacture and supply of accessories. Because of this, many have to buy similar products in other stores, or do it themselves.

Handwritten masterpiece

How to make curtains and curtains garters correctly? First you need to pick up and think over an idea. The first step is to determine what type of product the product belongs to. For example, it can be in the shape of a crescent, a braid, a flower, or just a piece of fabric with an oblong shape.

So, for the manufacture of a product in the shape of a crescent, you should prepare a fabric suitable for the texture. Its color should be combined and in harmony with the appearance of the curtain, as well as the lining material, or curtain rings. You should also make the blank lay in the appropriate shape and cut the same shape out of the fabric. Its length is equal to the curtain girth, and it must be assembled. Next, the lining should be swept to the workpiece, and processed with decorative tape along the edges.

It is recommended to decorate the ready-made pick-up (although this is at your request) with the help of a fringe. To fix it directly on the curtain, rings are inserted into the product. The garters are fixed on hooks that are attached directly to the wall behind the curtain.

Knitted product options

Undoubtedly, fabric tie-backs for curtains and curtains are a very good option. However, the crocheted garter is very elegant and showy.

Decoration element allows curtains to be lighter and more airy. In addition, using such garters, the curtains can be the most extraordinary. With the help of a hook, garters are made in the shape of a crescent, rings with tassels, flowers or pigtails. As for the type and shape, there are no special rules for them.

For making hand-made brushes with garters, you should decide what type of product you will have as a result. For example, you can come up with what the holder will be like by turning on your own imagination. You can familiarize yourself with the instructions for making garters in more detail in the video presented on our website. If you follow the tips and tricks offered here, you will surely make a very beautiful, elegant pickup option.

How to choose model

It does not matter at all how you made the decision to pick up.

It remains important to remember that:

• They go well with basic curtain fabrics.

• Garter color can be contrasting or similar / similar.

• The shape with the style of this item can be combined with the basic style of curtain construction.

• Crocheted pendants add lightness to the curtains.

• Holders made in the composition of flowers look very original.

Accordingly, it will take some effort to decorate the curtains, but absolutely every housewife can do this! For knitting, you can prefer any version of the technique, and fringe, beads, and other decor will help to complement the grab in an original way.

How beautiful to tie curtains with your own hands

Every housewife dreams of being comfortable, luxurious and beautiful in her house.Window decoration plays an important role in this. You can, of course, sew or buy curtains and just hang them on the windows, or you can tie them up beautifully, and thereby add your energy and character to the interior.

Even the most ordinary-looking curtains will be transformed and look stylish if you choose the right garters for them.

  • Adjusts the amount of daylight entering the room;
  • Able to elegantly decorate absolutely any curtains and tulle;
  • Easy to use, with them it is easy to close and open the curtains if necessary;
  • If there are flaws in the window opening, then with the help of grabs they can be hidden;
  • Fits into any interior and style;
  • Add elegance, solemnity and uniqueness to the room.

Curtain garters are used to grip curtains and fix them.

Types of garters

Curtain garters (hooks) are a decorative and functional element of window decoration. To effectively use this detail in your interior, you need to carefully study the information.

Different models of this accessory are sold in decor stores, but why pay money if you can make garters yourself?

Manufacturers of even the most sophisticated textile accessories cannot anticipate the wishes and needs of a potential buyer.

Pickups are of several types.

  • Soft. They can be either in contrasting colors or in the tone of curtains or curtains. There are different shapes: conical and straight, with the use of ruffle, beads and buttons, fringe, flowers and other things, decorative ribbons. Fabric ties are attached to the curtain itself or partially fixed to the wall with short holders.

The ties can be in the form of braided cords.

  • Rigid: plastic or metal. They have various shapes and colors, hold curtains tightly and look elegant. For high-tech style, plastic or with the addition of metal holders are suitable, and in the classic style it is better to use forged metal pickups.

How beautiful to tie curtains

Now that we have both curtains and garters, let’s decorate the windows in an original and effective way.

Double curtain

There are several ways to tie.

  • Asymmetrical. In this form, the window opening looks unusual and visually wider, especially if you secure them with bright colored garters.

Garters fix the curtains at different heights.

  • Symmetrical. Curtains are tied on both sides at the same height. It looks very cozy and harmonious. If the curtains are dissolved in a semicircle, then the atmosphere will be more romantic.

Straight, stretched curtains create a formal, formal setting.

  • Corner. The edge of the curtain is folded in the middle and fixed to the wall.

This type of tying gives softness to the whole decoration.

  • Cruciform. Opposite edges of the curtains are attached to opposite walls.

Thus, two functions are performed: decorative and functional.

Single curtain

This curtain is usually tied in the middle. If the product is in soothing colors, then the garter is taken in bright, contrasting shades. A harmonious solution would be to pick up the curtain on only one side and fix it with a grab.

It can still be tied with a knot at any level.

For example, to tie the curtains beautifully in the kitchen, fix the curtain with a garter on the side where the stove is. This will add coziness, sophistication to the kitchen, and also exclude the possibility of staining or igniting the curtain.

To make everything look harmonious, you need to choose matching ties.

Curtains can also be decorated with decorative braids. In this case, the window opening looks attractive and luxurious.

Provence or country style prefers ties with ribbons, lace, bows and hairpins-bouquets.

Important! And don’t forget: the more intricate and rich the curtains, the simpler the garter should look. The same rule works the other way around.

Beautifully tying tulle

As for the design of tulle, the same rules for the use of grabs work with it.

Functionality is as important as decorative.

The most popular way to make your interior original is to hang two colors of tulle. In this case, each layer is tied in a knot or bow at a different height. For tulle, elegant hairpins and clips are used that perform an aesthetic function. They also use asymmetrical, symmetrical and multi-tiered tulle hanging. She is also the most exquisite.

This option is more advisable to use in the living room.

  • Appropriate use of these garters in a particular room.
  • Necessity.

Considering these factors, the best solution would be to use garters that come with ready-made curtains.Often, they are made from the same fabric as the curtains, have an attractive appearance and securely fix the canvas in the desired position.

The original do-it-yourself version

And although in modern stores you can pick up a variety of accessories for curtains, many housewives prefer to create decorative elements with their own hands. Having a desire, a little time and the necessary set of materials, such original things are often created that can rightfully be called exclusive.

Materials of manufacture and type of picks

There are no restrictions on this issue. Do-it-yourself garters for curtains, you can knit, sew from fabric, weave from beads, ropes, twine. In appearance, garters can be made in the form:

  • Original braided braids.
  • Stitched Crescent.
  • Elongated fabrics.
  • Have the shape of a flower.

To create a braid garter, you will need:

  • material that matches the color of the canvas,
  • heavy batting,
  • fabric in contrasting color,
  • metal rings.

For production, it is necessary to form from batting three rollers for each curtain, cover the blanks with fabric, alternating one contrasting and two stripes that coincide in color with the main fabric. Next, we sew the fabric to the rollers and form a pigtail. We attach additional fabric to the ends of the workpiece for future fastening of the pick-up and sew in a ring so that half of it is visible. Attach the hooks to the wall behind the curtain. With the finished product, we pick up the curtain and fix the pick-up by means of a half-ring on the curtain and a hook on the wall.If the fabric of the curtain is satin or silk, you can create a pick-up in the form of a pigtail using satin ribbons.

The crescent-shaped pickup looks very original. For crafting you will need:

  • Curtain fabric
  • Lining material.
  • Non-woven.
  • Two metal curtain rings.

The length of the curtain is measured beforehand. Next, a crescent-shaped piece is prepared with a length equal to the previous value. The fabric is cut out according to the pattern, taking into account the allowances for the seam, and attached to the piece of non-woven fabric and lining fabric. The resulting blank is processed with a decorative inlay along the edge. Metal rings are inserted into the finished product, which will act as fasteners on the hook located behind the curtain on the wall.

To decorate roller blinds with garters with buttons, it is necessary to use blanks made of satin ribbons, from which two fabric strips are sewn. The length of each strip depends on the length of the roller curtain multiplied by a factor of 2.And the width is 5 cm. It is necessary to sew a button onto the finished strips and make a slot for the loop, to fix the grabs on the curtain.

Knitted garters

Sew curtain garters from fabric, according to the strength of almost every housewife. But crocheted curtain garters look more original. The combination of airy, light fabric and do-it-yourself decorative elements give the window a unique charm and beauty. Variants of execution and methods of garters of curtains,

You can crochet a product in the form of a flower, braids, rings, tassels, a crescent. The garter of curtains in the photo can be used to decorate a classic curtain, kitchen curtain, light curtain in the country.

Considering the color of the curtain, choose a thread for knitting. Then, according to the knitting pattern that can be found on the net, we proceed to create a garter. Note that in magazines and on sites dedicated to the home interior, a lot of options for curtain garters are offered. The creation of one of the possible models of garters, as well as instructions for creating, are presented in the video.

Thus, a handmade curtain garter will allow you to decorate in an original way a light curtain, a heavy curtain or a kitchen curtain. As you can see from the above, it is quite simple to sew or knit a decorative tie-back. All that is needed for the creative process is a little desire, an original idea and free time to implement the idea.

Do-it-yourself hooks, holders, suspensions, curtain garters

Curtains are an important part of the interior, in themselves they are its decoration. But they will give the room a finished look, bring the finishing touches and add a sense of style to the tiebacks for the curtains. Small, sometimes seemingly imperceptible, these details will enliven the look of curtains, give them a slight effect of novelty. And, of course, they will perform many important functions for which they are intended. In this article, we will look at how to make do-it-yourself curtain hooks.

Main purpose of curtain hooks

A beautiful and useful accessory that is never out of fashion and has several functions:

  • Visually eliminates window sill and window imperfections;
  • Decorates the curtain, gives the interior a finished look;
  • Helps to hide defects in the curtain fabric;
  • Helps in adjusting lighting.

The main purpose of the suspensions is that with their help the curtains can be assembled and fixed in such a way that the required amount of sunlight enters the room.

What keeps

The hooks, if you simply assemble the curtain with them, will create the effect of shapelessness and inaccuracy. In order to create a beautiful view, they themselves must be fixed. For this purpose, hooks are used that are designed to hold these accessories.

The hook is attached to the wall, keeping a distance of about 15 cm away from the curtain. Before fixing it, you need to decide on the type of garters and their exact location.

Different effects can be created depending on the location of the shade:

  • In the middle – a standard option that allows you to visually lengthen the window opening;
  • Below the middle (1/3 of the floor) – the window opening will visually become wider, and also the imperfections in the appearance of the window sills will be hidden;
  • Above the middle (1/3 of the ceiling) – the window, and the curtain itself, will seem longer, and the ceilings – higher.

The hooks cling to the hooks with loops or tapes. And the curtains are held by tying the ends, connecting them with magnets, fastening with hooks.

“Before you mount the hook into the wall, you need to decide how the hooks will look and at what level they will be located.”

Design ideas: variety of models

Accessories for fixing curtains are selected depending on how the curtains look and in which room they are located. It is also necessary to follow a simple rule: the richer the curtain looks, the simpler the garter should be; the simpler the curtain, the more interesting and attractive the design of the accessory.

There are many models of pickups. They can be sewn from various types of fabric, knitted and crocheted, weaved from ribbons and decorative cords, made from lace braid, toys, cut out of wood, converted from unnecessary things. But this does not limit the housewives in creativity – on the basis of ready-made ideas, you can come up with your own.

Ribbons, beads, chains, beautiful stones, buttons and much more are used for decoration. You can supplement a do-it-yourself holder with original embroidery or volumetric applique from scrap materials. Suspensions decorated with artificial flowers look original.

The clamps made of exactly the same material as the curtains themselves look elegant. Clips with ruffles or in the form of fashionable tutu skirts decorated with tulle bows will add a touch of romance to the interior.Garters on magnets will hold tight lambrequins well: in this case, it is better to place them 3-4 pieces in a row.

What the clamp will be – laconic and simple, chic, a real work of art – depends on the abilities of the hostess. The main thing is that the accessory harmoniously overlaps with other details used to decorate the room.

“When choosing a pick-up option, it is important to follow the style rule: the more beautiful and richer the curtain, the simpler this accessory should look, and vice versa” .

Selection of materials and manufacturing techniques

Curtain holder can be purchased ready-made in the market or in the store. Or you can show your imagination and make it yourself.

The selection of material for the manufacture of the retainer should also depend on the material from which the curtain is made. If it is a lightweight textile, then the pickup should also be made from simple lightweight fabrics or be refined and simple. Heavy fabrics are dramatically complemented by accessories adorned with tassels and cords.

Pattern of fabric hangers

One of the simplest options for creating a garter with your own hands is sewing by hand or on a typewriter.

The venture can be carried out in just a few steps:

  1. Fabric selection . The structure should fully or approximately match the curtains. The color can be in tune with them or differ by several tones. You can take a contrasting color: for example, to yellow – purple, to white – red, to brown – blue, to light green – brown, etc.d.
  2. Making a pattern . It can be as follows: two strips 25 cm long and 10 cm wide for one holder.
  3. Machine sewing . Attach the ribbons cut from the fabric to each other with the right sides, make a stitch, leaving a hole for an eversion.
  4. Unscrew the workpiece inside out . Insert the hook ring into the hole and sew.

The length and width of the belts can be adjusted at your discretion. You can decorate fabric pendants with various elements: bows, toys, applique, beads and beads, chains.

From plastic bucket

An ingenious idea – to make an accessory for the curtain from a plastic bucket of mayonnaise or sour cream.

Her incarnation will take very little of your time:

  1. On the outside of the can, draw an oval with a marker.
  2. Cut it out of the can with a clerical knife.
  3. Cut the middle inside the oval so that the workpiece resembles the letter “O”.
  4. Braid the oval with threads, ribbons or thin pieces of fabric.

Gimbal ready! Looking at it, an ignorant person will never be able to guess what it is made of. To fix the curtain in it, you need to take a stick or knitting needle and insert it along the edges of the oval behind the curtain. For such a clip, you do not even need a hook attached to the wall – it itself holds the curtain well, without creating sloppiness.

CD holder

No less original and practical is the method of making a pickup from computer disks.

A little effort – and a stylish detail is ready:

  1. Using a compass, draw a circle on the disc, the diameter of which is 1-2 cm less than the diameter of the disc itself.
  2. Saw out the inner part along the contour, sand the resulting ring with sandpaper.
  3. Wrap the disc ring with crepe or satin ribbon.
  4. You can decorate the product with artificial flowers, ribbon flowers, rhinestones, beads.

You can fix the curtain with a wooden stick or knitting needle.Or you can just thread it through the hole.

Knitted tie-backs

The curtain holder can be knitted from any yarn with knitting needles or crocheted. First you need to make a rectangular base with your favorite pattern, then weave one beautiful flower or several. Fasten them as decorations on the base, use the part as intended.

You can also decorate a knitted blank with tassels and pom-poms made of threads, bows and flowers from ribbons. The idea can be made more ingenious if you knit a toy as a base, fill it with padding polyester, and to fix the curtains, sew a lace to one foot, and a button to the other.

How to sew tie-backs with ruffles

Garters with ruffles look cute and delicate. And it is very simple to make them: cut tulle or other mesh material into strips of the same length and width. Tie strips one after another on a cord, decorate with a bow or a flower – that’s it!

Magnetic clamps

These interior details look great on light, flowing curtains. To make them, you need 2 or 4 magnets (depending on the severity of the curtains), a strip of fabric for connection (you can replace it with a satin ribbon or a piece of lace), decorative elements for decoration.

A few steps – and you can admire the result:

  1. Sew a piece from a piece of fabric or wide ribbons.
  2. Fix the magnets around the edges with glue. They can be pre-wrapped with cloth or ribbons.
  3. Customize the garter of your choice.

Such holders also do not require mounting the hook into the wall.

Tiebacks for curtains: how and how to fix the curtains beautifully?

Curtains give the finishing touch to the interior. When closed, they protect the room from sunlight and evening lights, and when open, they provide daylight. To keep the curtains open, they use hooks – convenient elements that perform not only a practical, but also a decorative function. With their help, the curtains are softly and beautifully draped, which looks stylish and beautiful.

What tasks do the pick-ups solve?

The main purpose of using garters is to secure the fabric in a certain position.Provided that the correct model is selected, the grips provide:

  • Nice fabric drape. The hooks present the fabric of the curtain in a favorable light and hide its minor imperfections.
  • Ability to hide the flaws of the window block, the proportions of the window opening and the entire room.
  • Preservation of the appearance of curtains. The less the fabric is touched by the hands, the longer it will remain clean and attractive.

Grips are able not only to facilitate the process of opening and closing curtains, but also to revive even a boring interior, to give the room’s decoration a finished look, to enhance its individuality.Curtains with hooks can decorate not only window, but also doorways, the background of the stage, the walls of the banquet hall. When choosing the type of garter, the following rule is followed: the more complex the shape of the curtains, the simpler the pick-up configuration should be.

How and how to tie the curtains correctly – types of garters

Bandages are made of various materials – fabric, metal, wood, plastic, they have different shapes and sizes. Conventionally, these products are divided into several groups.

Hard

They are made of stainless steel, copper and copper alloys (brass, bronze), more expensive metals (for example, blackened silver), wood, plastic.Rigid clamps are permanently attached to the wall using dowels and self-tapping screws. It is quite difficult to transfer them to a new location. Shape – a hook with decorative elements, a doorknob or a special product stylized as a doorknob. The product can be completely invisible against the background of the curtain or decorate it, thanks to the use of stones, forged elements in the decor.

Flexible

Such garters are made from non-marking practical fabrics or plastic polymers. To hold heavy curtains, products made of natural or artificial leather are used. The most popular form is banana.

Cloth tie backs usually have a lining in the same color as the front part, in a companion color, in a contrasting one. For reinforcement, a wire frame, plastic or cardboard element is laid between the layers of fabric. Lace, beads, hairpins are used for decoration. Products can be sewn on their own or ordered from a studio, where they will help you choose the appropriate option and perform the work at a professional level.

Flexible garters are attached to the curtain itself. They either pull the fabric, or take it towards the additional holder mounted on the wall. As such an attachment, it is better to purchase a decorative hook at a hardware store, in an extreme version – to do with an ordinary nail. Lightweight curtains can be secured with a small hook, which is attached to a smooth wall with double-sided tape.

An interesting option is the Kanzashi technique. They are not sold ready-made, but are made individually. Such garters are flowers and leaves of satin ribbons, in addition to which are used: organza, lurex fabric, lace, beads. The products look great in romantic or oriental interiors.

Another way to decorate flexible grips is to use foamiran, a foam material that can change shape when heated and retain it after cooling. Very realistic flowers are made from it. Foamiran lends itself to embossing, dyes well, does not fade and does not collapse under the influence of sunlight.

Nonstandard

Such hooks can have very different shapes – animal, bird, flower. They are made of wood, metal, materials at hand – ropes, solid or braided straps, lace strips, elements woven using the macrame technique. Cords for grabs are tinted with golden, silver or other solid paint or with an ombre effect (a smooth transition from a dark shade to a light one). Suspenders are suitable for informal rooms.

Hairpins

Tiebacks for curtains are rigid round-shaped clamps with two holes, into which a fixing stick is inserted. They pull the fabric, but do not fix it to the wall or window block. Suitable only for light voile or thread curtains.

Magnetic

This is a convenient option for draping light fabrics. Such a grip is a tape with two magnets, the front part of which is usually small metal elements of regular geometric shape. To beautifully tie the curtains with belts with magnets, you can choose sets decorated with stones and other decorative elements.

Bead

For heavy monochromatic curtains, use large beads collected on a strong thread or fishing line. Light transparent and translucent curtains can be assembled into several rows of medium-sized beads. The interweaving of beads and chains looks spectacular and elegant; beautiful buttons, medallions and other jewelry are suitable as additional decorations.

Garters with tassels

A spectacular option to decorate the curtains in the living room or bedroom – tie them with cords with tassels. To complement the grabs, voluminous brushes are usually used to match the curtains (for bedrooms) or contrasting colors (for elegant living rooms).

At what height to hang curtain hooks

The fixing height of the grips depends on the practical and visual effects required.

  • At the height of the windowsill. This option is used mainly in cases where it is not required to change the proportions of the window, and the curtain itself occupies almost the entire area of the wall.
  • Above the windowsill. This option is suitable for curtains whose bottom is located well above the floor level, for example in a kitchen. It allows you to visually expand the light opening, increase the size of the window sill. In this case, the mount is located at a height equal to 2/3 of the distance from the floor to the upper edge of the opening.
  • Below the windowsill. This technique visually narrows and lengthens the window opening. The grips are fixed to the wall about 30 cm below the window sill. This method is in demand for heavy velvet and brocade curtains.

Variants of using curtain hooks

Before choosing the optimal type of pick-up, the following points are evaluated:

  • How many draperies to create. You can only drape one curtain or two. Several canvases are hung on wide windows, for each of which an individual hold is made. Moreover, you can tie the curtain not only in the middle, but also below.
  • Fixation method. In any case, the curtain should lie in the grip with even folds.Only then will it look really beautiful. The curtain looks spectacular if it lies in the garter not in a taut state, but forms a small kink in front of it. If there are several curtains on the window, then the garters on them can be made at different levels.
  • Pick up color. In austere interiors, these details are usually made in the same color as the curtain itself. Along the contour, they are complemented with edging, lace, eyelets, small tassels. Such models look elegant and harmonious.

With the right choice, these accessories increase the functionality of curtains, complement their design, and exclusive products become self-sufficient interior elements.

Learning to choose trims for different types of curtains

Basons are elements for decorating curtains: braid, fringe, cords, tassels, hooks. There are so many options that it won’t take long to get confused. We choose the right option depending on the type of your curtains

Curtains without trims are like an evening toilet without properly selected accessories.

Curtains designed by the DecoTon design studio.

For double curtains

Lush, voluminous basses. The main thing is to remember that the trim here serves as a “link” between all the fabrics used in the drapery, and unites them into an ensemble – with the help of color, pattern, texture of the material, etc. Side hooks spread the curtains to the sides of the window. Fringe adorns the bottom of curtains and lambrequins, it can be plain and variegated, straight and twisted, with threads and pompoms of different sizes.Twisted cords fix and decorate. Brushes accentuate the nodes and are a powerful accent … Please note that there should not be many large brushes, one or two is enough.

Curtains designed by the DecoTon design studio.

For light curtains

Light, airy basses. Use decorative pins or magnetic clips as clamps, thin laces, chains, twine, satin ribbons will do.When finishing the edges, silk edging and graceful lace, light rope fringe or curtain tape (sewn on top, it will form folds and “adjust” the distance between them) are appropriate. Stock up on seed beads, crystal and acrylic beads, and feathers for trimming braids and clasps. They can also be strung on threads and let “rain” over the curtains. Ruffles are a great way to add a new color that, for example, will overlap with other furnishings. But the material must be similar in texture to the main canvas, otherwise there may be problems with the care of the product.

Curtains from the project implemented by the architectural bureau “Easyplan”.

For Roman blinds

Bassons that will transform austerity into elegance. An interesting vertical braid or thin garter ribbons will be a good solution. The bottom of the curtain can be decorated with small tassels, braid, fabric tape in a contrasting tone or glass beads, which will look great in the light on the lifting curtain. In a “neoclassical” interior, use basins made of unbleached linen, silk, leather, horsehair, sisal. Remember that the “natural” trim is perfect even for a synthetic curtain and will only add nobility to it. But the opposite option is excluded: synthetics on silk – a categorical “no”. But bold experiments are possible – for example, finishing a strict curtain with ruffles or a classic roll.

How to fix the clamps

Grips hold the curtain in position and shape it.As for the choice of materials, there are no restrictions: it can be fabric braid, jute, tapestry, twine, wood, and even metal. There are different ways to attach the grips:

The hooks do not have to be made of tapes Alternatives: decorative magnets or buckles.

Pictured: decorative magnet for Rosone curtains from Momenti.

  • On the boom. The grip is looped around the curtain and fixed at the top, on the bar, while the lower edge of the curtain rises slightly. This option is suitable if the curtain is rarely moved.
  • In the middle of the curtain. The hook, located in the middle of the canvas, clings to a hook attached to the wall. The upper part of the curtain pulls up and gains volume.
  • In the lower half of the shade. Curtain support attached to the side. On long, floor-length curtains, it is located at a height of one third of their length. On grabs with brushes – a little higher: so that there is enough space for the brushes. The outer edge of the curtain should remain vertical when pulling the curtain in place.

Description of the order of sewing strings

As a simple sewing project, curtain ties provide an opportunity for novice seamstresses to learn the ins and outs of a sewing machine.

Making a regular long rectangular tie will only take you a few minutes.

Things you need.

  • Soft, flexible tape
  • 45 cm fabric to match the curtains or in a contrasting color.
  • Folding board
  • Scissors
  • Thread matching garter
  • Sewing machine
  • Hand sewing needle
  • Wooden or metal rings (optional)
  • Pins.

In combination with laconic curtains, they will become a real decoration.

  1. Pull back and hold each shutter in the position that indicates where you plan to install the mount. Hold one end of a soft tape against the wall where the hook will be.Wrap the tape gently around the curtain. Remember the footage. You can adjust the degree of inclination – the curtain can be looser or more taut, depending on the look you want.
  2. Add 3 cm to the length of the tape. For example, if you measured 40 cm, cut a strip of 43 cm to hem the fabric at both ends. Calculate your desired garter width. For example, if you want a 5 cm wide strip, you will need 10 cm + 2.5 cm for the hem.
  3. Place the fabric on the board. Mark the length with a pin at the top and the width at the top, bottom, and midpoint.Cut a long rectangular piece. Use the first cut of the fabric as a template for the second, laying on top of the fabric and trimming around.
  4. Fold the tape in half with the right sides together and sew a straight stitch 3 cm from the edge of the sewing machine following the marks on the bottom plate under the fabric. At both ends, press the reverse button on the sewing machine to go back with your stitches. This blocks the end seams and prevents them from breaking. Sew one end in the same way as the side seam, running the machine in reverse on both edges to secure the seams.
  5. Cut an hem within 1cm of the stitching. Turn the garter inside out, but fold the open end over the sewn piece, lowering it down until the tie is on the right side.
  6. Fold under the 3 cm unstitched edge. Lock it in place and close it manually with small stitches to complete the return. Repeat the sewing steps for the second binding.
  7. To create a buttonhole, follow the procedure for your sewing machine, as it requires a special attachment for the presser foot to be added to the machine. If you don’t want to create loops, simply sew two metal or wood rings by hand at both ends of the fastener. These are available at fabric stores.

Do-it-yourself magnetic curtains, kanzashi

By galinarudi Reading 9 min.Views 1k. Published

Author: Galina hand-made

Good afternoon, my friends!

For me today, the topic is kanzashi-style curtain hooks (kanzashi). I have already made curtain hooks in this style, but they were made from CD / DVD discs. And today I will tell you how I made curtain hooks with magnets.

Mom came to visit me. She does not live in Russia, but in Kazakhstan. Therefore, we do not see each other often. So I wanted to do something to her))). I decided to make magnetic curtain hooks and decorate them with flowers made in the style of kanzashi (kanzashi).

For this work, I needed:

  • Satin ribbon, width. 5 cm – white, lilac, pink;
  • Satin ribbon, width. 2.5 cm – white, lilac, pink;
  • Organza ribbon wide. 4 cm – green;
  • White satin fabric (not a very large piece).
  • Felt;
  • Hot melt glue;
  • Magnets – 4 pcs;
  • Thin base plastic;
  • Beads;
  • Fine wire;
  • Cord – 3 m.

Before making the curtain hooks directly, I prepared flowers from sharp petals – kanzashi, somewhat similar to lilies. For each pickup: 3 large, double flowers and 14 small, single flowers.

Large, double kanzashi flower, from a ribbon 5 cm.

First, I prepared some sharp petals. For each flower, it took 10 petals, since I decided to make double flowers themselves. The lower petals on all flowers will be white, while the upper petals will be pink and lilac.I will show you how I folded the petals in pink.

  1. From tape wide. 5 cm cut out a square.
  2. Fold the square diagonally with the wrong side inward.
  3. I folded the resulting triangle again.
  4. Then I folded it a third time and cut off the edge (in the photo it is marked with a blue, dotted line). I trimmed it in order to align the cut of all layers. I pinched it with tweezers.

Fold the petal

5. Bring the cut side to the candle so that the ribbon melts slightly.Advice: it is better to melt in the wick area (there is less smoke here). If it touched the flame, it was only lightly. The petal was held several times along the fire to melt the entire edge.

6. When the cut edge is slightly melted, clamp it with tweezers for a few seconds so that the tape sticks together.

7. The result is a petal, as in photo # 7.

8. Then she turned out the petal, as in photo # 8.

I fold a petal of

Such petals, I have prepared: white – 30 pcs, pink – 20 pcs, lilac – 10 pcs.

Prepared petals

Now, you can collect flowers.

9. Glued the white and pink petals. To do this, I applied hot melt glue to the white petal along the fold. And immediately, from above, I put a pink petal (so, I collected 20 pieces of white-pink and 10 pieces of white-lilac petals).

10. When the double petals were collected, began to collect flowers. I put hot glue on the edge of the white petal and pressed the next petal against it, edge-on. I tried to apply the glue slightly before reaching the middle and to the end of the petal.By the way, you can vary how much the flower will be open. If the contact strip of the petals is small, the flower is open more and vice versa.

11. Collected 5 double petals. She parted the last, not glued petals, applied glue and pressed.

12. Following this principle, I have collected all double petals. In the end, I got it – 6 pcs. large, double flowers, 3 pcs, for each pick.

Collecting a flower

Still, I made small flowers.

Small kanzashi flowers, from a ribbon wide.2.5 cm.

Small flowers, I made shir. 2.5 cm single. In fact, I only had a white tape of that width. But pink and lilac flowers, such a shade, was not. Therefore, I just cut the shir ribbons. 5 cm. From one square of 5 cm it turns out – 4 squares of 2.5 cm. I cut it with a soldering iron, using a ruler. I have already written about this several times, you can see it, for example, in the master class: Wedding champagne. I made the white-pink flowers only because there was very little pink ribbon left.In total it turned out – 28 pieces, 14 each, for each curtain pickup.

Flowers from a ribbon shir. 2.5 cm

Now, I needed to make the stamens. Here I decided to experiment. I have long wanted to make wire stamens, for two reasons:

  1. So that you can bend the stamens at your own discretion.
  2. And most importantly, I wanted to add volume to the work. When flowers are glued immediately to any base, everything turns out in one plane and there is not enough natural volume.

But looking ahead I will say that I was not entirely happy with this experiment. It was necessary to use a slightly more elastic wire, or to make stamens from a different material. The stamens from this wire had to be straightened after you accidentally take them in. One thing reassured me that this is not a hair accessory that is constantly taken off / put on. I hung the curtain hooks right, straightened the stamens and let them hang. But this experience was useful for me))).

And so: I took the wire, put on small beads in the middle of the wire and twisted it.

Twisted stamens

For small flowers, I used one stamen at a time. And for the big ones I twisted five stamens together.

Flower stamens

Glued stamens to large flowers like this:

  1. Into a bead (larger than the beads on the stamens), I passed 5 stamens twisted together and inserted it all into the flower. Here, in the center of the flower, there was not a sealed space (by the way, that is why, when gluing the petals together, I tried to apply glue a little before reaching the base of the petal). And then I lifted the bead up so that it does not interfere when I apply the glue.
  2. Then I applied a little hot glue to the bottom of the flower, and lowered the bead, pressing it.
  3. After the glue cooled down, I made a flower leg. She took a skewer and wrapped a wire around it, as in photo # 3.
  4. In small flowers, the stamen beads were glued directly to the bottom of the flower. And also twisted the leg (photo # 4).

I insert the stamens and make a flower leg

Also, to decorate the curtain hooks, I needed green leaves.Exactly the same, but in golden color, I made leaves for Rose from a satin ribbon. There I used a burner, but practice has shown that it is more convenient to cut or solder synthetic material with a soldering iron and it turns out smoother.

Green leaves.

The decor is ready, now you can assemble the curtain hooks.

We assemble curtain hooks, with magnets

For the base of the grips, I needed a thin, flexible and durable material. For this case, I put the title page of the plastic folder.I also needed magnets, felt and white satin fabric. I bought magnets at a craft store, 4 pcs.

Magnets

Basics did this:

  1. With a soldering iron, I cut out two symmetrical “drops” from plastic and two, exactly the same ones, from felt.
  2. About the middle of each base, with a soldering iron, I cut out a circle with a diameter slightly larger than the diameter of the magnets. Then she glued the felt to the plastic. And then, I glued one magnet at a time, inserting it into the cut out circle. Also, for strength, I covered the magnets with circles of white satin fabric (this can be seen in photos 3 and 4, they shine through the fabric). The mugs were glued not to magnets, but to plastic.
  3. Next, I took a piece of satin fabric and glued the bases to it, felt up. I cut off the excess, focusing on the bases, retreating by about 1.5 cm. Then, I made frequent notches on the atlas, not reaching the plastic by 2-3 mm. I made the notches so that the atlas could be neatly bent.
  4. Then, glued the edges of the satin, bending it over to the side of the felt.

Making the base

Now you can decorate the curtain hooks. I glued green leaves to the bases.

I glued green leaves

Flowers glued, like this: on the base, in the place where the flower will be located, I generously applied hot melt glue and then sunk the flower’s leg in it. And until the glue cools down, I held the flower so that it would not move out. I glued, first, three large flowers, and filled the remaining space with small ones. Periodically, she inserted green leaves between the flowers.

I glue flowers

As a result, I got such a grab. The second grab was decorated in the same way.

This is how the catch

ended up. After I decorated the curtain hooks with flowers, I needed to make the second part of this structure.Namely: a cord and a circle with a magnet, with which the hooks will be attached to the curtains.

Circles with a magnet, made according to the same principle as the basics:

  1. I cut out two circles with a soldering iron, with a diameter of about 3.5 cm. In the center of these circles I cut out circles for magnets. And glued them to the pieces of felt.
  2. Then, I glued the magnets to the felt, as in photo # 2. IMPORTANT! Be sure to check the polarity of the magnets with magnets that are already glued to the bases with flowers. That is, so that the magnets are magnetized, and not repelled from each other)))
  3. Glued the resulting circles to the satin fabric.I cut out, retreating from the plastic by about 1 cm. I made notches and glued the satin by wrapping it, as in photo No. 3.
  4. Then I cut out two more circles from satin, with a diameter slightly larger than plastic ones, literally by 4-5 mm. I burned these circles over the candle and glued them to the main circles. I forgot to photograph this moment, but then everything is visible.

I am doing the second part of the curtain hooks

Now about the cord. I bought a cord with a diameter of about 4 mm. Weaved a pigtail out of it and divided it into two parts. Then, with the resulting pigtails, I connected the base with flowers and a circle. I just glued on the braids and covered the gluing with pieces of satin ribbon.

Here you can see how the cord is glued to both parts

Now, the curtain hooks are completely ready.

The curtain hooks are ready

Honestly, I was a little worried that the curtains would hang under their weight on the curtains. I mean, not keep straight. But no, when I attached them to the curtains, they looked pretty decent.

I could not show the curtain hooks on the curtains for which they were made (Kazakhstan is far away).Mom’s curtains are light, with a light light green pattern. And the curtains are dark red. I photographed on my curtains, which were not quite suitable for them. But, as they say – “what are they rich with”

Curtain tape: varieties, forming of folds

Curtains will only decorate the window if they are equipped with a beautiful drapery .An important component of their appearance will be folds, which in waves lie on the surface of the curtain, giving it uniqueness. Curtain tape, or it is also called English tape, is the best suited for these purposes. Externally, it is a frame with twisted cords running along the entire braid. It should be sewn to the curtain from the wrong side at the very top. Pulling the cords along the surface of the canvas, they begin to form folds of the required width and configuration.

Material content

Curtain tape

Curtain tape can be subdivided according to the type of drapery:

  • Column .Forms the simplest folds, such a braid is easy to sew on your own;
  • Tape, when tightened, can form folds in the form of intricate glasses or butterflies.
  • Transparent . Light fabrics are draped: tulle or organza. Such a braid is represented by a fishing line that has no color, it remains invisible.
  • Opaque . This means curtain fabrics.

Depending on the width, the tape for curtains is divided into types:

1 .Narrow . They are used if there is a closed cornice or it is hidden in a niche. It is possible that the niche covers the top of the curtain, or there is a decorative strip that covers the hooks.

2. Wide . In this case, the cornice must be open. In addition, if the number of fasteners is small and it is required to prevent sagging, then a wide tape will successfully do this.

Such different folds

The drapery created by the curtain tape will look different. In this case, the types of folds can be as follows:

  1. One-sided. Waves of folds are formed in one direction.
  2. Counter. The cloth of fabric is divided into paired waves, and their combs are directed towards each other.
  3. Bow pleats. There is the same formation of paired waves, only now their crests scatter to the sides. Outwardly, the figure resembles a bow.
  4. Pantry. The tied fabrics form a diamond, which is formed by four cords.
  5. French or triple.Waves, reaching a depth of 14 cm, are formed in the form of a fan.
  6. Glasses or bells. Body waves falling down.
  7. Trellis. Two rows of draperies that overlap each other.
  8. Waffle. The drapery looks very elegant when the waves fall evenly over the entire surface of the curtain.
  9. Pencil gather with loop folds. To do this, the straightened curtain is pulled together with a cord, forming waves, taking into account the gaps between the hooks.
  10. Flemish folds. This requires the presence of two cords on the tape. By uneven contraction, a V-shaped configuration is achieved.

Types of tapes for drapery

There are many of them, and each type makes it possible to create certain folds at the discretion of the hostess. For example, there may be such curtain tapes:

1. For proportional collection of folds over the surface. Has pockets evenly distributed along the length.Using special hooks, tucks are created along the surface of the canvas.

2. Braid using cords for gathering. It is sewn to the very top of the canvas, then the cords are pulled together to the required size and fixed.

3. Ribbons forming bows. The condition for the formation is the width of the curtain, which should be three times wider than the cornice.

4. Ribbons forming bows. The size of the curtain is chosen 2.5 times wider than the length of the cornice.

5. A narrow tape that is attached at the top of the curtain and creates small folds due to two elastic bands built into it.It is calculated that the curtain is 2 times wider than the length of the cornice, but its size should not exceed 158 cm.

6. Tape with tucks. In this case, the ratio of the size of the curtain to the cornice is calculated as three to one.

7. Wide tape. It is used when you want to get pencil folds – narrow, but rather long.

8. Tapes used in Roman blinds are equipped with rings and a cord with loops. Attached to the blinds.

9.Ribbon with rings attached to it. The rings are made of plastic, sewn at regular intervals. The tape itself is attached to the blinds vertically from the seamy side. A cord will be stretched through all the rings.

Types of braid

And this has its own varieties. Tape for curtains is:

  1. Narrow up to 4 cm and wide up to 15 cm.
  2. Differ in the number of hook pockets broaches.
  3. Different in terms of the coefficient of assembly: from 1.5 to 3. The frequency of folds depends on the value of the coefficient.
  4. Sew-on – fixed to the curtain with a sewing machine.
  5. Some types of braid are glued with a hot iron to the curtain.
  6. Fastened to the cornice with Velcro and loops.

The material from which the curtain tape is made is polyester. It adheres to the curtain fabric literally at every point, prevents sagging and deformation of the material. Loops are sewn to the tape along its entire length, to which the cornice hooks cling. In addition, the curtain tape may contain:

  • Eyelet rings;
  • Pockets for hooks;
  • Seals;
  • Two to four cords.

If you want to get simple assemblies on the curtain, use hooks that are threaded into pockets or loops. If the material is heavy, the hooks are made of brass, but for a light material, plastic hooks are sufficient. There are varieties of special crochet hooks that are used to create triple or bow folds.

If one row of loops forms simple folds, then 3-4 rows form folds of a complex configuration.

When choosing a tape, you should take into account its length, which depends on the size of the folds that you want to have on the curtain.

Recommendations for sewing on

Before the tape is sewn to the curtain, a series of work must be carried out. This is preceded by the measurement of the cornice, curtain and braid. Moreover, to the resulting length of the curtain, add 15 cm of the length of the tape as a reserve.Considering that the braid shrinks, it needs to be corrected. For this purpose, it is moistened, dried and passed over it with a hot iron. All seams of the curtain must be finished.

The braid is attached to the curtain in its upper part with an indent of 2-5 mm, and from the wrong side, and its edges should be tucked 2 cm. With the help of a cord pulled to a certain size, the necessary configurations are obtained. Next, you should fix the cord, which will fix the desired state of the curtain. The optimal assembly factor is 2-2.5, the splendor of the curtain fabric depends on this.

Thus, the right curtain tape can work wonders even with inexpensive material, creating intricate curly folds and providing a chic look to the living room.

DIY curtain holders – master class

Oct
27/11

Various decorations are used to make the curtains look more elegant and original. For example, decorate curtains with a beautiful garter. These curtain hooks (or, as they are also called, curtain holders) are sold in the store, but it is quite possible to make them yourself. We invite you to do it with us.

In order to make holders for curtains with your own hands, you will need the following materials and tools:

DIY curtain holders

  • Wooden beads – 7 pcs.
  • Pink iris thread – 0.5 balls
  • Double-sided tape – 1 pc.
  • White satin ribbon (width – 1 cm) – 30 cm.
  • Scissors
  • Gypsy needle
  • Thick and strong thread – 10 cm.

1. Cut off a small strip of tape. We glue it to a wooden bead so that the adhesive tape wraps around the edges of the bead without filling up the holes.

DIY curtain holders

2. Then remove the paper layer from the tape – only the transparent adhesive part remains. Press it against the bead with your fingers so that it sticks well.If not all of the bead is covered with duct tape, glue the tape to the “bare” places of the bead.

DIY curtain holders

3. Now we will decorate the bead with iris thread. First, we need to decide on which side we will start winding the thread. If from the left, then we take the short end of the thread and press it in the area of the center of the bead, leading the thread further towards the left hole. After that, the thread should adhere well to the bead.

DIY curtain holders

4.Then we begin to twine the bead in a circle with a thread. We start near the left hole, as planned. We start winding the thread only from where there is scotch tape – otherwise it will not hold. We hide the end of the thread, which we glued earlier, under the circles of the wound threads.

DIY curtain holders

5. From the hole in the bead, move to the center: wind the thread, firmly pressing it to the bead so that it sticks. In this case, the thread does not need to be tightly pulled – this way it can “remove” the previous rows of the thread from the bead.

DIY curtain holders

6. The most difficult stage is winding the thread at the end, near the second hole of the bead. We do this carefully, remembering to carefully press the thread to the bead. Cut off the thread, press its tip to the adhesive surface. One decorative bead is ready!

DIY curtain support

7. Make six more beads in the same way. If we need two curtain holders, we make, accordingly, thirteen more decorated beads (seven for each holder). The number of beads in the holder depends on our wishes and the thickness of the curtains: there can be ten beads in the holder, pressed against each other (without gaps), or there may be only five, but with ribbon gaps between them.

DIY curtain support

8. We go to the finish line: we need to string the decorated beads on a satin ribbon. To do this, we take a ribbon of the required length and a gypsy needle. We pass a strong thread through the needle (we took a woolen thread) and tie a knot. Then we pass the needle over the edge of the ribbon and lead the thread to the end, until the knot “gets stuck” in the ribbon.

DIY curtain holders

9. Now we can thread the ribbon through all the beads: the needle and thread in this task will serve as a “locomotive”. So, using a needle, string seven ready-made beads onto the ribbon.

Holders for curtains

10. Then cut off the ends of the ribbon with scissors so that they look fresher.

How to tie the curtains beautifully – decorating curtains with hooks with tassels, ribbons, beads

Curtains give a finished look to the interior. When closed, they protect the room from sunlight and evening lights, and when open, they provide daylight. To keep the curtains open, they use hooks – convenient elements that perform not only a practical, but also a decorative function. With their help, the curtains are softly and beautifully draped, which looks stylish and beautiful.

  1. What tasks are solved by the hooks
  2. How and what to tie the curtains correctly – types of garters
  • At what height to hang the hooks for curtains
  • Variants of using the hooks for curtains
  • What tasks are solved by the hooks Main purpose

using garters – securing the fabric in a certain position.Provided that the correct model is chosen, the hooks provide:

    • Nice drapery of the fabric.

Ties can not only facilitate the process of opening and closing curtains, but also revive even a boring interior, give the room’s decoration a finished look, and enhance its individuality.Curtains with hooks can decorate not only window, but also doorways, the background of the stage, the walls of the banquet hall. When choosing the type of garter, the following rule is followed: the more complex the shape of the curtains, the simpler the pick-up configuration should be.

How and how to tie curtains correctly – types of garters

Dressings are made of various materials – fabric, metal, wood, plastic, they have different shapes and sizes. Conventionally, these products are divided into several groups.

    Rigid

They are made of stainless steel, copper and copper alloys (brass, bronze), more expensive metals (for example, blackened silver), wood, plastic.Rigid clamps are permanently attached to the wall using dowels and self-tapping screws. It is quite difficult to transfer them to a new location. Shape – a hook with decorative elements, a doorknob or a special product stylized as a doorknob. The product can be completely invisible against the background of the curtain or decorate it, thanks to the use of stones, forged elements in the decor.

    Flexible

These garters are made from non-marking, practical fabrics or plastic polymers. To hold heavy curtains, products made of natural or artificial leather are used. The most popular form is banana.

Cloth supports usually have a lining in the same color as the front part, in a companion color, in contrast.

    Non-standard

Such hooks can have very different shapes – animal, bird, flower. They are made of wood, metal, materials at hand – ropes, solid or braided straps, lace strips, elements woven using the macrame technique. Cords for grabs are tinted with golden, silver or other solid paint or with an ombre effect (a smooth transition from a dark shade to a light one). Suspenders are suitable for informal rooms.

An interesting option for a nursery, kitchen, living room – decorating garters with plush animals, textile dolls. In eco-styles, cones and reeds decor looks great.

    From beads

For heavy monophonic curtains use large beads collected on a strong thread or fishing line.

Do you like the curtains? You can order the same ones in the Living room section

At what height to hang the hooks for curtains

The fixing height of the hooks depends on the necessary practical and visual effects.

Variants of using pick-ups for curtains

Before choosing the optimal type of pick-up, the following points are evaluated:

    • How many draperies you need to create. You can only drape one curtain or two. Several canvases are hung on wide windows, for each of which an individual hold is made. Moreover, you can tie the curtain not only in the middle, but also below.
    • Fixation method. In any case, the curtain should lie in the grip with even folds. Only then will it look really beautiful.
