Cotton on stockings: Cotton stockings | Etsy

Clocked Cotton Stockings, Crown Style

Sizing is a very tricky thing. It depends not only on the actual length of the garment, but also on it’s cross stretch and the shape of the item going into it. Wee ankles, calves, or hands versus more substantial ones, wider feet versus narrower ones, all of it affects fit. Nearly all of the stockings we offer are above the knee in length or even thigh high, depending on the person wearing them.

The majority of our items are One Size Fits Most, and this truly does seem to work out great for most people. We also carry a few that are available in size Small and Large. These are based on men’s shoe sizing. The size “Small” generally fits a 5-8ish shoe size. The “Large” size fits approximately a 9-12 shoe size. Due to the nature of knit objects, both of these are quite flexible in either direction depending on the feet and legs involved.

HISTORICAL FIT / GARTERS:

As these stockings are produced to imitate historic versions of hosiery, so too do they have similar attributes. Early stockings did not have elastic and were worn with garters to support them. We heartily suggest wearing them with ours.

Garters can be anything from something purchased to a simple length of ribbon gently tied below your knee to help hold up your stockings. If your historical clothing involves knee britches, sometimes one does not need garters if the leg cuff on the knee britches is fitted well.

If you use a garter belt, the thinner styles of stockings (lightweight or silk) will tend to work better with the button type clips. A garter belt with the wider clamp style clips will work with most of our styles.

Some styles of our stockings stay put quite well for some customers without much assistance, especially the vertical ribbed varieties. We do hope this is helpful and not too confusing. Since there are so many body types in the world, a simple absolute answer just isn’t possible. If you ever have a question regarding fit or wear, please do not hesitate to contact us. We love talking with our customers. 🙂

Absolute Support Cotton Compression Socks – Firm Support 20-30mmHg, Unisex

Compression stockings are medical grade devices designed to move blood flow.

Support compression stockings are made available in multiple compression support levels. Most commonly compression support stockings come in mild (8-15 mmHg), Medium (15-20 mmHg), Firm (20-30 mmHg), X-Firm (30-40 mmHg) gradient compression levels.

Compression Therapy Guide

  • Prevents fatigued legs from long periods of sitting or standing.
  • Helps relieve minor swelling of feet, ankles, and legs.

  • During pregnancy, helps prevent the formation of varicose and spider veins.
  • Helps maintain healthy, energized legs.
First Time Wearing Compression Stockings? We recommend you start with 15-20mmHg
Medium

  • Helps relieve tired, aching legs, and minor swelling of feet, ankles, and legs.
  • During pregnancy, helps prevent varicose veins and spider veins.

  • Helps prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT), also known as economy class syndrome.
  • Used in post-sclerotherapy treatment to help prevent the reappearance of varicose veins and spider veins.
  • Ideal compression level used for those traveling long distances.
Firm

  • Helps prevent and relieve moderate to severe varicose veins (also during pregnancy).
  • For post-surgical and post-sclerotherapy treatment to help prevent the reappearance of varicose and spider veins.
  • Helps in treatment of moderate to severe edema or lymphatic edema.

  • Helps with the management of active ulcers and manifestations of post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS).
  • Helps relieve superficial thrombophlebitis.
  • Helps prevent orthostatic hypotension (sudden fall in blood pressure when standing).
  • Helps prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT), also known as economy class syndrome.
Extra Firm

  • Helps prevent and relieve severe varicose veins.
  • Used in the treatment of severe edema and lymphedema.
  • Used in post-surgical and post-sclerotherapy treatment to help prevent the reappearance of varicose and spider veins.

  • Helps reduce symptoms of Orthostatic Hypotension and Postural Hypotension
  • For the management of Venous Ulcers and manifestations of Post-Thrombotic Syndrome (PTS).
  • Prevents deep vein thrombosis (DVT), also known as economy class syndrome.
RX 40-50 mmHg Gradient Compression Stockings are generally indicated for more Serious Venous Diseases such as Acute Leg/Ankle Swelling, Varicose Veins, Chronic Vein Insufficiency and Deep Vein Thrombosis.

The benefits of Compression Therapy are plentiful and the reasons vary from person to person why you may choose to wear compression socks or stockings. As shown in the above chart, some of the most prevalent symptoms or conditions that benefit from compression therapy are:

  • Pregnancy related swelling and vein problems
  • Varicose or spider veins
  • Lymphedema or edema
  • Swelling, pain or blood clots in the lower legs, also known as DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis)
  • Poor circulation from sitting for long periods
  • Post-surgical and post-sclerotherapy treatment

It can even be used as a preventive measure to maintain healthy legs for someone who spends extensive amounts of time on their feet. Quite simply, when we stand still for long periods, the forces of gravity increase the pressure within the veins of the legs where the greater effects happen at the ankle and decreases gradually up the leg and body. This pressure depends on the vertical distance of the column of blood from the heart to the foot. That’s why gradient compression stockings are designed with the pressure greatest at the ankle and diminishing as it moves up the leg in order to counter the effects of the higher venous pressures.

Compression therapy products are put on in the morning upon arising, which is typically before any significant swelling would occur, and then removed at night. Throughout the day the compression prevents blood from pooling in leg veins, which in turn helps your overall circulation and lessens or eliminates any leg swelling you may have.

When shopping for compression socks or stockings, it is best to measure earlier in the day before swelling builds in the legs. Measurements taken later in the day after swelling occurs may cause you to choose an item that is too large and then not effective.

There are many types of compression socks and stockings available without a prescription and they do offer wide-ranging benefits. Before wearing a compression therapy of 20 mmHg (Firm Compression) and above, it is generally recommended to consult your health care provider to find out if graduated compression stockings are right for you. If the answer is yes, they can tell you what pressure grade you should buy for maximum benefit and relief.

Cotton Hosiery: 20 Cotton Tights, Stockings & Hold Ups

Now that it is officially autumn, I’m picking back up on a hosiery series I began earlier in the year that focusses on natural and sustainable fibres. I’ve already covered silk and bamboo, and today I’m turning my attention to cotton.

Cotton can be a wonderful hosiery option for a few reasons. It’s soft, it’s durable, and it lets your skin breathe, which may be the difference between your thick winter tights feeling comfortably warm and unpleasantly sweaty. It’s also hypoallergenic, meaning it’s less likely to irritate sensitive skin than synthetic legwear. Plus, it’s both relatively easy to find – at least online – and usually quite inexpensive, although the price does of course depend on which other fibres it’s mixed with. (Side note: none of the items I’ve found are 100% cotton – at minimum, a little elastane is needed for a good fit).

As for its downsides, one is that cotton isn’t suited to making sheer hosiery – silk is your only real option for that, if you’re looking for an alternative to the standard nylon. There’s also the fact that you’re mostly limited to tights, although I did find a small handful of stockings and hold-ups which are included below. And if you’re interested in cotton hosiery from a sustainability perspective, that’s a bit of a grey area. Yes, it’s a natural, biodegradable fibre, but cotton production usually causes significant harm to the environment in terms of both water consumption and chemical pollution. The Green Fibres and Swedish Stockings tights below are made from eco-friendly organic cotton, if that’s something that matters to you.

Want to give cotton hosiery a go? Then let’s get onto the fun part – where to find it! Below I’ve rounded up 20 items, organised from highest to lowest cotton content. Note that many of these products are available in multiple colours.

Are you a fan of cotton in your legwear? If you prefer it over other hosiery fibres, what’s the reason?

More in this hosiery fibre series:

Silk Hosiery: 14 Silk Stockings, Tights & Hold Ups

Bamboo Hosiery: 11 Pairs of Bamboo Tights

Wool Hosiery: 21 Wool Tights, Stockings & Hold Ups

Cashmere Hosiery: 16 Cashmere Tights & Hold Ups

Eco Hosiery: 16 Recycled & Biodegradable Tights

Obtaining Copies

If an image is displaying, you can download it yourself. (Some images display only as thumbnails outside
the Library of Congress because of rights considerations, but you have access to larger size images on
site.)

Alternatively, you can purchase copies of various types through
Library of Congress Duplication Services.

  1. If a digital image is displaying: The qualities of the digital image partially
depend on whether it was made from the original or an intermediate such as a copy negative or
transparency. If the Reproduction Number field above includes a reproduction number that starts
with LC-DIG…, then there is a digital image that was made directly from the original
and is of sufficient resolution for most publication purposes.

  2. If there is information listed in the Reproduction Number field above:
You can use the reproduction number to purchase a copy from Duplication Services. It will be
made from the source listed in the parentheses after the number.

If only black-and-white (“b&w”) sources are listed and you desire a copy showing
color or tint (assuming the original has any), you can generally purchase a quality copy of
the original in color by citing the Call Number listed above and including the catalog
record (“About This Item”) with your request.

  3. If there is no information listed in the Reproduction Number field above:
You can generally purchase a quality copy through Duplication Services. Cite the Call Number
listed above and include the catalog record (“About This Item”) with your request.

Price lists, contact information, and order forms are available on the
Duplication Services Web site.

Access to Originals

Please use the following steps to determine whether you need to fill out a call slip in the Prints
and Photographs Reading Room to view the original item(s). In some cases, a surrogate (substitute image) is
available, often in the form of a digital image, a copy print, or microfilm.

  1. Is the item digitized? (A thumbnail (small) image will be visible on the left.)

    • Yes, the item is digitized.
Please use the digital image in preference to requesting the original. All images can be
viewed at a large size when you are in any reading room at the Library of Congress. In some
cases, only thumbnail (small) images are available when you are outside the Library of
Congress because the item is rights restricted or has not been evaluated for rights
      restrictions.

As a preservation measure, we generally do not serve an original item when a digital image
is available. If you have a compelling reason to see the original, consult with a reference
librarian. (Sometimes, the original is simply too fragile to serve. For example, glass and
film photographic negatives are particularly subject to damage. They are also easier to see
online where they are presented as positive images.)
    • No, the item is not digitized. Please go to #2.
  2. Do the Access Advisory or Call Number fields above indicate that a non-digital surrogate exists,
such as microfilm or copy prints?

    • Yes, another surrogate exists. Reference staff can direct you to this
      surrogate.
    • No, another surrogate does not exist. Please go to #3.
  3. If you do not see a thumbnail image or a reference to another surrogate, please fill out a call slip in
the Prints and Photographs Reading Room. In many cases, the originals can be served in a few minutes.
Other materials require appointments for later the same day or in the future. Reference staff can
advise you in both how to fill out a call slip and when the item can be served.

To contact Reference staff in the Prints and Photographs Reading Room, please use our
Ask A Librarian service or call the reading room between 8:30 and
5:00 at 202-707-6394, and Press 3.

clocks/clocking | Fashion History Timeline

Clocking has been used in hosiery since the 16th century. Historian Daniel Delis Hill writes about the etymology of the term in The History of World Costume and Fashion (2011):

“The ankles of men’s nether hose were also decorated with lavishly embroidered sections called clocks, from a Dutch word meaning bell-shaped.” (398)

Clocks were a unisex feature: A pair of men’s clocked woolen boot-hose from the 17th century can be seen in figure 1, and a painting of a woman wearing clocked stockings in figure 2.

Jose F. Blanco writes in Clothing and Fashion: American Fashion from Head to Toe (2015) that:

“In addition to buckles, decorative stockings worn by men and women enhanced the opulent, patterned textiles of their clothing. In the latter part of the 18th century, fashionable stockings made of silk or cotton were generally white. They were often adorned with knit or embroidered patterns in metallic thread at the ankle, referred to as ‘clocks’ or ‘clocking’. Of course, they existed along with more utilitarian stockings of linen and worsted wool.” (110)

Author Nan H. Mutnick writes for the Berg Encyclopedia of World Dress and Fashion (2010):

“During the nineteenth century, hosiery was made from cotton, silk, or very fine wool. Those living in the colder climates, such as northern Canada, would have used heavier-weight wool for warmth. Stripes and embroidered patterns called clocks (small embroidered, woven, or knitted decorations on the back of the heel or side of the stocking) were used.” (135-136)

Clocks could contrast with the color of the rest of the stocking (Fig. 3), and were generally positioned to be seen over shoes. An expensively clocked silk stocking with silver embroidery (now tarnished to black) can be seen in figure 4; as is apparent from the staining, white stockings were harder to keep clean. Both men and women wore clocked hose and stockings until the early 19th century; while breeches were worn, men sported clocks (Fig. 5), but they became a woman’s decorative element after trousers were introduced in menswear. Phyllis Tortora mentions the late 19th century style in Survey of Historic Costume (2015):

“Usually stockings matched the color of the dress or shoes. Embroidered and striped patterns were popular. For evening in the 1870s, white silk stockings with colored clocks (a small design) were preferred, whereas black became popular in the 1880s.” (399)

A pair of late 19th-century white silk stockings with monochromatic blue embroidery can be seen in figure 6.

Jose F. Blanco also describes hosiery in the 1840s and beyond:

“Stockings were another essential accessory that women in the antebellum period rarely did not wear. Most women wore plain white, pale pink, or mauve stockings made of machine-knitted silk or cotton. Some stockings had a decorative design on one side known as clocking.” (27)

“An essential item of underwear worn during this period for men and women was stockings. These were knitted and made of silk, cotton or wool. Decorative embroidery known as clocking decorated the front of the stocking. By the 1840s, stockings were held up above the knee with elastic cords.” (256)

A pair of synthetic-purple machine-knitted girl’s socks can be seen in figure 7; the clocking on them is minimal, and mostly for strength and security, as with the white stitching at heel and toe. As Blanco notes, there is an elasticised section at the top.

The term ‘clocking’ faded in use after the late 19th century, but certain hosiery designers continued to use it for their products. Mary Grey’s ads for “clocked stockings” in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Women’s Wear Daily continued through the 1950s (Fig. 8).
