Sustainably Made Breastfeeding Clothes | Milk & Love

We have only one planet and it is up to us, each and every one, to look after it as best as we can. As a mother, I want to do the best that I can to look after our Earth for my children, and my children’s children. At Milk and Love, we believe in choosing sustainably made products for this reason.

From it’s inception, Milk and Love has always considered the environment with every decision we make. One of the most important ways we care for the earth is by choosing suppliers of our breastfeeding clothes and maternity wear that also care about our environment, such as Mothers En Vogue and Love Milk. Our suppliers manufacture our clothes using fabrics that are made with natural fibers as much as possible, and the garments are made in socially responsible factories. Some factories are certified WRAP, others are regularly inspected during the production process.

As a mother, you will also find that natural fibers are generally much more comfortable to wear than synthetics. Particularly when you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, you will appreciate breastfeeding clothes or maternity clothes made from natural fabrics that help regulate your body temperature, and wick away moisture. Natural fabrics are also essential for people with skin sensitivities (including babies!).

Some of the fabrics you will find in our breastfeeding and maternity wear include:

  • Cotton – A firm favourite for many people, cotton is breathable, durable and absorbs moisture. It also holds colour well, and is great for people with sensitive skin.
  • Modal – Made from cellulose from beech trees this gorgeous fabric flows beautifully, and is also very sturdy and durable. This one is also great for nursing as it absorbs moisture well. Most of the Modal used in the range is high quality Lenzing modal.
  • Linen – A very traditional fabric derived from Flax plants, Linen is great for warmer weather as it keeps your body super cool. It is a stiffer fabric that doesn’t cling, and also doesn’t have much ‘give’. If you’re in between sizes you may need to go for the larger size for styles made with Linen
  • Silk – Great for hypoallergenic skin, silk is great for warm and cold weather, and also absorbs moisture well.

Eco fabrics we particularly love:

  • Organic Cotton – made without any pesticides or chemicals, organic cotton is good for the environment, and also tends to be stronger and softer than non-organic cotton. It is also a great choice for hypoallergenic skin, as it doesn’t contain any residual chemicals.
  • Bamboo Rayon – growing in popularity, bamboo clothing is super soft, very lightweight, and great in cold and warm weather due to its breathable and absorbent properties. It is able to be grown quickly and easily without harmful pesticides or chemicals.
  • Organic Bamboo – particularly featured in the Love Milk branded clothes, these high quality fabrics are sourced and manufactured in Turkey, which are also abiding by European regulations for workers conditions.

If you would like to know more about any of our range, or about our philosophy in general, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

The 10 Best Nursing Bras of 2021

Our editors independently research, test, and recommend the best products; you can learn more about our
review process here.

A nursing bra is a supportive undergarment designed for breastfeeding women. It has cups with flaps or panels that can be easily opened to provide access to your breasts without having to remove your entire bra. It’s a convenient breastfeeding accessory.

Nursing bras come in various styles like regular bras with underwires, sports bras, bandeaus, nursing tank tops, and more. To help you find the nursing bra that best fits your lifestyle, we rounded up the best options loved by moms.

Here, the best nursing bras for all your needs.

Final Verdict

Our top pick is the Hatch Collection The Everyday Nursing Bra (view at Hatch Collection). It’s comfortable, wireless, and provides excellent support for changing breast sizes. It comes in various sizes, colors, and can be customized into various styles. As a plus, it’s also great to wear at night.

What to Look for in Nursing Bras

Fit

Donna Murray, RN, BSN, recommends finding a nursing bra that fits you properly if you decide to wear one. It should be “supportive but not tight,” meaning if it leaves behind any indentations or marks on your skin, it’s not the right one for you.

“If your bra is too tight, it could cause plugged milk ducts, mastitis, or a decrease in your milk supply,” Murray explains. Lactation centers, maternity shops, and lingerie stores may have someone who can assist you in finding your right bra size.

Material

Check the material of the bra and try to choose one that is made with natural materials, like cotton. “Natural materials are absorbent and allow air to flow to your breasts. Synthetic materials can irritate your breasts and trap moisture,” Murray explains.

Design

Instead of an underwire bra, a soft cup bra will feel more comfortable. Murray says the wire in an underwire bra can lead to problems, like mastitis, due to “pressure on the tissue at the base of your breast.” Additionally, purchase a bra you can easily open with one hand so that you can still open the bra while holding your baby.

Buying Extra

Having at least two nursing bras will be helpful during your breastfeeding journey so you have an extra to wear while the other is washing. “Nursing bras can become soiled easily from leaking breast milk, sweating, or your baby’s spit-up and drool,” Murray shares.

“Change your bra whenever it becomes dirty or wet since moisture laying on your breasts for an extended amount of time can provide an optimal environment for the growth of bacteria or fungus. To avoid skin irritation, sore nipples, mastitis, or thrush, wear a clean, dry bra. Nursing pads or breast shells worn inside your bra can also help to keep your bra clean and dry.”

FAQs

What size nursing bra should I buy?

Because your breasts can change during pregnancy and directly after birth, Murray recommends playing the waiting game. “Since your breasts will most likely change in size at the end of your pregnancy and then again during the first week postpartum, you may not want to invest in more than one or two bras until after your baby arrives. ” This will help give you an idea as to what size your breasts will be.

Do I need a nursing bra?

While you don’t absolutely need a nursing bra, it’s very convenient to have when it comes to breastfeeding. “If you have smaller breasts, you may feel fine without a bra. A regular bra or a sports bra can be used as well,” Murray says. “However, if you have a larger bust or your breasts are very full and heavy, a supportive nursing bra may help you to feel more comfortable.”

Proper care of cotton clothes

Cotton clothes have a number of invaluable properties: they are strong enough, perfectly tolerate washing, easy to iron and perfectly absorb moisture.

Washing. Before washing cotton clothes, first clean any stains.

Then check the contents of the pockets so that you do not accidentally wash money, documents and other small items with your clothes.

Fasten all zippers, buttons and hooks (except for buttons) on the clothes, tie the existing laces, and turn the clothes inside out.

Straighten the cuffs on the sleeves of blouses and shirts without fail.

Clothes made of cotton fabrics, unlike knitwear and wool, can be safely loaded into the washing machine.

The water temperature in the washing machine when washing cotton clothes made of thin colored fabrics should not exceed 40 0 C. Things made of denser colored fabrics can be washed at a temperature of 60 90 019 0 C, and for white cotton clothes you can set the washing temperature even higher …

In any case, before washing your clothes, read the icons on its tags, there will necessarily be indicated the temperature of the water for washing a particular thing, as well as the permissibility of using bleaching agents.

To avoid sudden temperature changes, rinse cotton clothing in warm water.

Drying

After a slight spin, or even better, without it at all, hang the washed cotton clothes to dry naturally.

Try to avoid direct sunlight on drying wardrobe items.

Do not overdry cotton items, as in this case the fibers of the fabric are destroyed and the garment loses its original appearance.

If the washed items are still dry, moisten them from the sprayer an hour or two before ironing

Ironing

There is nothing super complicated here either. With the temperature regulator set to the Cotton position, turn on the steam, if available, and start ironing.

Observe the order of ironing: start with small parts of the garment, gradually moving to larger ones.

Storage

Know that citric acid is harmful to cotton fabrics, and the structure of the fabric is destroyed in a matter of minutes.

Another enemy of cotton clothing is natural light, which dyes snow-white yellow.

And the most interesting thing: cotton clothes are completely inedible for moths, this winged glutton cannot digest the fibers of cotton fabric, so you don’t have to worry about protecting such clothes from moths.

Tips

– If the product sheds heavily, it should be washed in cold water and dried flat immediately after rinsing. For rinsing, it is recommended to add salt to the water (1 tablespoon per 10 liters of water).

– If the product is slightly stained, it is enough to fill it with hot water with the addition of baking soda and leave for 10 – 12 hours, then wash and rinse several times.

– If you dry your product outdoors, it should be borne in mind that in the bright sun fabrics can fade, and negative temperatures can promote bleaching, which is undesirable for colored and black products.

– Cotton is ironed wet, from the front side, and if there is an embroidery or print on the fabric, then it is ironed from the inside out.

– Cotton can be ironed with a high temperature iron.

90,000 properties, care, recommendations for sewing – Master classes on BurdaStyle.ru

Cotton is one of the oldest types of fabric

According to archaeological excavations, cotton is at least 7000 years old! At different periods of time, it began to be cultivated in India, Mexico, Pakistan, Ancient Egypt, China, Peru and other countries.Cotton came to Europe much later; Arab merchants brought it somewhere at the beginning of the 11th century. AD

The Industrial Revolution brought about an incredible development in the cotton industry. The first spinning machines for the production of cotton cloth were patented in England around the middle of the 18th century. Gradually, the technique has improved and at present we have a huge selection of cotton fabrics of the most different processing and in a mixture with many other fibers of different properties – dense and loose, thin and light, holding their shape and well draped fabrics with plain or twill weave threads.

Many people love cotton fabrics for their naturalness, ease of sewing and comfort to wear.

Absolutely everything is sewn from cotton: from bedding, curtains and furniture fabrics to carpets, wall coverings, book bindings, bags, shoes and, of course, clothes, especially summer clothes.

In addition, cotton is the most popular type of fabric used in patchwork.

In addition to direct use, other products are produced from cotton seeds. Crushed seeds, for example, are added to flour. You can dress salads with cottonseed oil. Also, fodder for fish, poultry and livestock is made from cotton, and the leaves and stems are mixed with the top layer of the earth during its digging to enrich the soil.

Before opening

Before proceeding with cutting, the cotton fabric must be designed and then carefully ironed. Decating cotton will allow you to understand how a particular piece of fabric will behave in the future – whether it will shrink, whether it will lose color, whether it will change its tactile properties, whether it will lose its shape.

How to decorate fabric, read on BurdaStyle.ru

Not all types of cotton are susceptible to shrinkage, but it is still better if the length of the purchased cut is slightly larger than required for a particular model. On average, add 10 extra centimeters to the required length. Better to let the fabric remain a little than not enough.

How to sew with cotton

Plain cotton is easy to cut and sew. The canvas, as a rule, is obedient and the displacement of parts relative to each other is practically impossible. The main thing is to choose the right needles and threads for sewing, they should be perfectly sharp and match the thickness and density of the cotton fabric. For example, denim needles are suitable for gabardine, and silk needles for thin cambric.

What kind of gabardine fabric?

Fabric properties

The quality of cotton depends on the length of the fibers that are extracted from the cotton seed bolls: the longer they are, the better and more expensive the cotton fabric.

Cotton is a very strong fabric, tear-resistant and resistant to high temperatures.

A distinctive feature of cotton is its high hygroscopicity. It can absorb up to 20% moisture by its own weight without feeling wet. Therefore, cotton dries slowly.

Thanks to mercerization, cotton is given a light shine, increases tear resistance and almost completely deprives it of its ability to shrink.

Cotton fabrics do not warm well. However, the ability to retain heat is increased by teasing.

Cotton wrinkles a lot.

Poor quality linen can be severely squinted after washing.

Cotton care

They can be washed in a machine using modern washing powders that do not corrode paint, rinse well, and cope with dirt even at low temperatures.

White and colored plain cotton products are allowed at a temperature of 90 °, printed cotton products are washed at 60 °, and for fine types – at 40 ° in a delicate or manual mode.

For white cottons, you can use any detergent, for colored cottons, delicate and bleach-free detergents are better.

This is interesting: ironing correctly means good sewing!

Dry cotton products in a straightened form to avoid excessive wrinkling of the fabric. It is advisable not to let the clothes dry to the end; it is easiest to iron the cotton when it is wet. The temperature regime, as a rule, in the “cotton” position, is one of the highest indicated on the iron. But fine cotton is best ironed in the “wool” mode to avoid excessive drying of the fabric and possible damage. And don’t forget to use the steam function, which will make ironing easier and quicker.

Since cotton fabrics wrinkle a lot, it is better to store them rolled up in small rolls or on thick, soft hangers as for knitwear.

90,000 Materials and care of merch

We produce merch from eco-fabrics.

Sustainability in everything is the agenda of any business today. We face this from two sides: both as producers and as those who work with companies that think about the environment.

Not only the design of a thing is important to our clients, but also who, how and from what made this thing. And for us, in turn, it is important what we bring to the world. Therefore, our next step was the transition to working with materials from organic cotton.

How is organic cotton different from regular cotton?
This cotton, grown without the use of harmful chemicals (pesticides, insecticides), frees the soil, air and water from pollutants. It also requires 75% less water to grow.

Where does this cotton grow?
Customize Me Studio products are made from cotton grown and processed in Turkey. Other major producers of organic cotton are India, China, Senegal, Tanzania, Peru and Kyrgyzstan. We carefully select suppliers for cooperation. At the moment our Turkish partner has quality certificate for the use of organic cotton.

Since organic, why does it contain polyester?
20% synthetic fabric in our sweatshirts and hoodies is a reasonable step that gives the product many practical characteristics that are important for customers (durability, smoothness, ease of care, shape stability, etc.)). It is a mistake to think that any polyester is very bad. High quality polyester, produced on modern equipment, is 100% safe. Also, such polyester is much easier to recycle than many traditional organic materials.

What to do with the pellets?
Before the first wash, the inner pile may roll, which may leave lumps on the underlay.
Do not be alarmed, after the first washings, the appearance of pellets decreases or disappears altogether. The reason for the pills is the fluffing of the inner layer of the footer (this is the fabric from which we make sweatshirts and hoodies). It is completely possible to avoid pellets only by replacing our fabrics with more synthetic ones, which we do not want and will not do 🙂

How to care for the product?
Follow the care rules and the product will be with you for a very long time.

Care of cotton items

Care of cotton items

Absolutely everyone has cotton items. It can be both underwear or bedding, as well as shirts, dresses, etc. And the issue of caring for cotton products is always relevant.

What should you do first before washing? This is to carefully study the labels on the product and follow the recommendations so that the thing does not lose its properties and qualities. Otherwise, you need to follow the general recommendations for cotton care.

Since cotton fabrics are strong and resistant, they can be exposed to high temperatures. But! The product may shrink during the first wash. This often happens with baby fleece pajamas. It is worth considering this point and purchasing a larger item.

There is a category of plain (white) cotton products that can be boiled. In this case, you can select the mode on the washing machine, which is usually called “Cotton”. And it works at about 90-95 degrees.

Colored cotton items are recommended to be washed at 30-40 degrees.

An important point is the choice of powder or any other cleaning agent. If we wash white things with powder for white, it contains bleaching elements, then it is better not to wash colored things with them. And yes, white and colored items must be washed separately.

In order for bed linen to stretch better, it is recommended to turn it inside out before washing. If there are traces of grease, for example on kitchen towels and tablecloths, we recommend soaking them first.
