By far and away, the most common question that I receive from readers (after, which shoes to wear to work) is how to get a job/internship on Capitol Hill. As you might imagine, the competition for jobs on the Hill is fierce, and there are several reasons for this competitiveness. While you might hear the media discuss the ballooning federal workforce from time to time, the number of employees in each chamber is determined individually by the House and Senate, and this number has stayed fairly stable over the past few years. In the House, a Congressman may only have 22 employees divided between his District and his Capitol offices. So whether the Representative has the largest district (1 million constituents, Montana) or the smallest (500, 000 constituents, Wyoming), he has the same number of employees as the Congressman next door. This greatly limits the number of jobs that are available. Additionally, while many offices post job listings on the Internet (more on this later) or advertise them in local and D. C. publications, many jobs are filled by word of mouth.
Vogue’s Guide to Putting Together The Perfect Interview Outfit
There’s so much to think about when applying for a job, from articulating your skills to what to wear to an interview. The outfit you choose can form a first opinion that counts, and no one knows that better than Vogue editors. Many of us spent hours carefully deliberating what to wear to secure our current gigs. And while each editor’s style is certainly different, there is one universal rule that we cling to when getting dressed for all our appointments: If it makes us feel great, we wear it.
Now there are, of course, some boundaries within that statement. A job interview might not be the moment to whip out your favorite Marine Serre bodysuit; actually, any logo-emblazoned pieces or exuberantly flashy designs could overshadow your skills and what you bring to the table. It’s a balancing act of showing off your personality in a polished and refined manner.
Before you sit face-to-face with the hiring manager, scroll down for five hero items to consider the next time you find yourself wondering what to wear to an interview.

The Zoom-Ready Blouse
You have the added luxury of staying at home for virtual interviews, but your approach to getting dressed from the waist up still needs to be carefully thought out. Be sure to avoid low necklines that could leave you appearing to be more exposed than you actually are. Classic shirts with interesting details will be your best friend. And, yes, you’ll get bonus points for putting on a pair of trousers and loafers. Even if they aren’t visible on camera, knowing you’re dressed to impress from head to toe will boost your confidence.

An interviewer in the beforelife decides which souls will go on to be born
Author of the article:
Chris Knight Adrift on the existential plain: Winston Duke stars as Will in Nine Days. Photo by Mongrel Media
“Just tell me the rules and I’ll play the game.” It’s a line delivered by one of the characters in the existential drama Nine Days, but it’s also a version of what we ask of every movie we sit down to watch. They’re not all constructed in the same way, but as long as they maintain a degree of self-consistency, we’re usually game to ride along.
Nine Days, a first feature from Brazilian/Japanese writer/director Edson Oda, skates perilously close to breaking that contract, before putting down the flaps and gliding to a near-perfect landing. It’s a sweet, exhilarating flight.
We begin the trip with Will (Winston Duke), who spends most of his time watching television. Not just any old TV, however. The 20 or so sets arrayed on his living room wall offer points-of-view of different lives. He takes great interest in a young woman named Amanda, but when something happens to her, the screen defaults to a test pattern, and we learn that Will’s primary job is to interview potential new souls.
“You are being considered for the amazing opportunity of life,” he tells applicants, played by Tony Hale, Bill Skarsgård and others. If they are chosen, they’ll move from this beforelife to the kind of existence you and I now experience. “No memories,” he says. “But you’ll still be you.”
Oda provides just enough information to intrigue, without getting bogged down in the details of this metaphysical plane. We learn that Will used to be a human being in the real world, while his colleague Kyo (Benedict Wong, speaking in his native British accent) knows only what he watches on telly.
And while we never learn where the applicants come from, they arrive with personalities and a moral grounding, which they bring to bear on the trolley-problem-type questions Will throws at them. Those that wash out over the nine-day testing period literally fade to nothingness, but not before Will, who’s more of a softie than he lets on, engineers a final emotional experience for them. (I’m reminded of the 1998 Japanese film After Life, well worth seeking out, which features a similar idea.)
Two more things of note. One is Oda’s decision to ground the story in antiquated technology, giving it a timeless feel. Will uses VHS machines (You notice it’s never Betamax? That format didn’t catch on anywhere!) and sometimes just pen and paper to keep track of lives lived.
The other is Zazie Beetz, playing a hopeful soul who calls herself Emma. While everyone Will interviews is trying to figure out what he wants – “There are no wrong answers” never fooled anybody – she pushes back in very specific ways, determined to make sense of existence and maybe even leave her mark on it. It’s a worthy goal, whether your journey lasts nine days, or 90 years.
Nine Days is playing now in Montreal, and opens Aug. 13 across Canada.

The Hugh Hewitt Show – Opinion and Information with a Unique Twist
Life in Los Angeles County is a life among scolds. As a conservative I am reminded on daily basis what a knuckle-dragging, backward-thinking, downright evil Neanderthal I actually am. It starts on the arrival by airplane where local regulation mandates that the flight attendants tell all passengers about the indoor mask mandate, the need to register with the county as an arrival, the mandate to self-isolate if not vaccinated. The scolding continues at the grocery store where one must bring their own bags or pay money to the government for the privilege of getting one from the store because how dare we have the audacity to create garbage. For those of us that love our big-power muscle cars, it continues on the road when those who know they are superior in their hybrids and electrics spot your vehicle and purposefully get in front of you to slow you down – even when you are going the speed limit. The list goes on and on and on.
But apparently we Angelinos are not alone in getting scolded:
“It’s just not OK for kids to commit murder by coming to school without a mask,” said Norman Public Schools board member Linda Sexton during a board meeting on Monday.
“And when it comes down to it, it’s possible. They will cause a death of another child because they come to school without a mask. That’s not OK,” Sexton can be heard saying in a video of the meeting posted online by the school board.
That’s a whole new level of jaw-dropper. Equating going maskless to murder. Life amongst scolds is deeply wearying.
Glenn Reynolds (Instapundit) posited an explanation in his latest NYPost column:
Maybe the mask fanatics are just poor persuaders. But it seems just as likely that they are engaging in poor persuasion because they aren’t trying to persuade.
As with so much that goes on in today’s society, and especially on social media, this sort of thing isn’t aimed at convincing those who disagree, but rather at garnering high-fives from people who agree and, ultimately, creating an ideological veneer for unquestioned elite rule.
Much of it is aimed at elites and would-be elites themselves. Lots of people want to feel that they’re important, and that they make a bigger impact on the world than the average person. (Spoiler: On average, they don’t). And lots of people — especially a particular sort of upper-middle-class person who thinks of himself as educated — want to believe that they’re smarter than most other people….
Feeling like you’re making a big impact on the world is much easier. Posit some sort of social threat — it doesn’t really matter what it is, from climate change to the coronavirus — and then speak against it. Voila! Suddenly you’re doing something important. Or more accurately, suddenly you feel like you’re doing something important….
But you can feel smarter than other people by simply reciting views you and your crowd have decided are smart. It doesn’t matter if you’re just parroting things you don’t actually understand: If you’re saying smart things, then you, too, must be smart. Or at least, you can feel that way. (Spoiler: The easier it is to convince yourself that parroting other people’s views without understanding them makes you smart, the less smart you probably are.)
Hard not to quote the whole thing, so to borrow from Glenn – read the whole thing.
Now where this gets truly galling is that in essence this is inventing a morality for the sake of feeling smarter and superior. If one assumes morality is arbitrary then I suppose ego is as good a reason as any other to invent a morality. But most of us believe that morality is rooted in something. The average reader here thinks it rooted in scripture and church tradition, but even if one is not Christian one tends to think that morality is something other than arbitrary. Where we are here is something much deeper than relativism because it is not simply saying that morality is subject to context and perspective. This is saying that morality is to serve any given individuals ego – it makes a god of each of us.
But it does explain why our differences cannot be resolved. Gods don’t have to settle with anybody else, after all they are gods.
It also makes me hopeful for the future. If we are all like this, and I do not think we are, we will eventually get tired of the warring of the gods and have to moderate in some fashion. But I honestly think most people are simply intolerant of other people thinking they are gods. Most of us know better and are only willing to put up with being pushed around by holier-than-thou types for just so long.
The pandemic has had people in a deferential mood. But the vaccine is rapidly changing that. We’re not all victims now and we are not willing to be pushed around for the sake of those that choose victimhood (the unvaccinated) over victory. That’s why the Democratic scolds of Congress (Bernie, etc.) are so anxious to pass their economy killing bills. The natural advantage a socialist would have when we were all actually in the same boat of the pandemic is going away as the vaccine does exactly what it is supposed to do.
Trust me, its going to backfire.
Chris Ault explains why Jay Norvell has been the right man for the job at Nevada
When Nevada was searching for a head football coach in December 2016, the program’s godfather, Hall of Famer Chris Ault, was tapped to interview the three finalists who reached on-campus interviews.
There was Eastern Washington head coach, Beau Baldwin, who many considered the front-runner. There was Vanderbilt offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig, whose tenure at Utah overlapped with that of Wolf Pack athletic director Doug Knuth. And there was Arizona State wide receivers coach Jay Norvell. While some considered Norvell the least likely of those three to get the job, Ault entered the interviews with a soft spot for him.
In 2013, just months after Ault resigned as Nevada’s coach, he was invited to Oklahoma’s spring football camp for three days. The Sooners had been whacked by Texas A&M, 41-13, in the Cotton Bowl, and Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops was looking for an offensive spark. He wanted more insight into Ault’s Pistol offense, with Norvell serving as the Sooners’ co-offensive coordinator at the time.
“I was able to watch Jay interact and coach the players among their other coaches, and I was very impressed,” Ault told Nevada Sports Net during an interview in his home this week. “He happened to be my host for that weekend. We had some great conversations about Oklahoma, about football, about what they were trying to do and where they wanted to go. He’s been around. He’s a very diverse coach who’s been in the NFL, he’s been at the collegiate level, many great universities and some that weren’t. He has a wealth of experience to draw on, much more than I ever had about my career.”
As Ault likes to say, Norvell has seen the rainbow and seen the storm during his career, but back in 2013, he never thought the two would become great friends. But that’s what has happened since Norvell was hired to lead the program Ault built from scratch. There’s an immense respect between the two, the past meshing with the present, a bond that lacked when Ault was replaced by Brian Polian, the Wolf Pack’s head coach from 2013-16. While those two didn’t have a relationship, Norvell has welcomed Ault with open arms. The 74-year-old Ault, whose grandson, Drew Scolari, is a true freshman at Nevada, is a regular Wolf Pack practice and excited about the 2021 Wolf Pack’s potential, saying he sees similarities between this team and his 2010 squad that went 13-1 and finished 11th in the nation. This 2021 team also has Top 25 potential.
“There’s no question about it,” Ault said when asked if sees similarities between the 2010 and 2021 teams. “The quarterback situation (with Colin Kaepernick and Carson Strong). Those teams from 2008-2012, our offense averaged over 500 yards per game. I see this team, whether they average that or not, I don’t know, but it’s a very potent offense and an offense that can keep you in the game. And then you hope your defense gains the momentum we got last year to play really good defense, and it looks like we’re going to be much better on defense. I think the pieces are there for the puzzle to be put together and compete for the conference championship.”
With Nevada potentially on the brink of greatness, Ault credited Norvell’s consistent approach to building the program. Now entering Norvell’s fifth season, the Wolf Pack is coming off three straight bowls, and while there have been ugly times, including a 3-9 debut season and a 2019 campaign rife with blowout losses, Nevada enters this year with arguably the Mountain West’s top roster after going 7-2 last season.
“It’s exciting,” Ault said. “The beautiful thing is we’re back in the realm of preseason conference opportunities to be a champion, and that’s what Wolf Pack football is about. Jay’s got us there, the team is excited, the talent is there. I think it’s an exciting time for the University of Nevada and the community of Reno. He’s done a great job in terms of the type of players he wants to recruit here and the type of coaches he gets. When a coach leaves, he replaces them with a really good coach. Jay’s an optimist. He wants to be a part of that Wolf Pack family, that championship family, and that’s what he preaches, and that’s what he believes.”
Ault is appreciative of how welcoming Norvell has been with him and his former players. Norvell hosts a Wolf Pack Walk the day before every game in which a former Nevada player speaks to the current team. Ault is a constant source of conversation for Norvell, who isn’t afraid that he’d be overshadowed by allowing Ault to be a big part of the program.
“He’s accepted my former players from the first day,” Ault said. “He always has them on campus visiting with them. He and I are very close, as you well know. We spend a lot of time talking football and other things. He’s the right personality for the University of Nevada and the football program in terms of bridging he gap, if there is any gap, from the university to the community.”
Ault said Norvell’s optimism has been a big plus for a school that doesn’t have an elite budget or top-grade facilities. Despite getting a contract extension after the 2019 season, Norvell still ranks last among MW head football coaches in that category. But Nevada always punched above its weight under Ault, with Norvell using the same template to have success with the Wolf Pack. His recruiting classes haven’t typically been lauded by recruiting rankings, but Norvell and his staff have gotten the most out of the talent they’ve brought to Reno.
“You have to get the athletes with athleticism and develop them,” Ault said. “You look at the great ones I had, none of them were picked early in their careers to be great ones. They developed over time and got better. That’s exactly what Jay and his staff have done. They’ve taken these young guys, redshirted them and brought them along in the system. That’s why it’s so important to be consistent in what you’re trying to teach, especially on the offensive side of the ball.
“It’s similar to what we did in the past. You get these guys, they’re good athletes, they’re good kids. You get them, you develop them, they believe in the program, they become one and then you win a few games that you shouldn’t have and all of a sudden you believe you’re pretty doggone good.”
Ault said there’s no doubt Carson Strong is a future NFL quarterback, and he’s high on tight end Cole Turner. The Wolf Pack also boasts all-conference wide receivers Romeo Doubs and Elijah Cooks. Despite Ault annually putting competitive teams on the field with rosters that included future pros, Nevada struggled to consistently draw big home crowds. He’s hopeful this year’s preseason hype, next-level talent and the fact fans weren’t able to go to games last season drives attendance.
“You really don’t know what you have until you lose it,” Ault said. “When we lost the opportunity to go watch sports at our university whether it be football, basketball, women’s soccer, any of that stuff, you realize what you miss. I’m hoping our community realizes the University of Nevada is the show. It’s the place and everybody being one can be a part of it. And we need them. We need them there now. We need them to fill the stands. We haven’t had great attendance, even when we were winning and doing some great things. I’m hoping now because of COVID, people say, ‘It’s great to get out and see these guys.’ They’re entertaining and have proved they’re a good football team. You can’t put the pressure that they’re going to go undefeated. But they’re going to play some good football.”
Ault said Norvell has lived up to expectations since he recommended hiring him to Knuth five years ago. Ault’s 2010 team had to go through heartbreak in 2007, 2008 and 2009 with near misses against Boise State before fulfilling its championship potential in 2010. Last year’s Wolf Pack team suffered the same, finishing half a game short versus San Jose State of reaching its first MW title game. So what will get Nevada football over the hump and to a MW title this season?
“The difference is what you did in the offseason to prepare these kids,” Ault said. “I’m not talking about the physical part. Everybody lifts weight, runs and all the coaches say, ‘Our guys are in great shape.’ It’s the mental part and do the players really believe in it? Are there some question marks? This team should have no question marks over whether they can win the championship. They know they can. Now it’s a matter of doing it.”
90,000 How to dress properly for an interview?
Appearance during the interview is very important. After all, the first impression will be formed even before the HR specialist begins to ask questions about your education, skills and work experience. Clothes will help create the desired look. On the eve of the interview, try to study in advance the specifics of the dress code in the company in which you are going to apply for a job.
The main recommendation when choosing a color scheme is calm and neutral colors.Bright hues will be distracting, as will catchy prints. Give preference to the classics. A solid color or a suit in a cage, a pinstripe, a goose foot is always a win-win option.
A calm color does not mean boring. The black and white combination will create an incredibly stylish combination for your kit. The modern business dress code allows for many more variations: all shades of blue (from pale blue to ink), dark green, gray or noble beige.
Psychologists advise you to choose shades that suit you especially and in which you will feel more confident in the interview.Try to strike a balance by drawing the employer’s attention to yourself, but not distracting from the purpose of the interview.
Choice of clothes depending on the position
The choice of clothing for an interview depends on what position you are applying for. Women leaders need to look collected and businesslike. A win-win, strict, but feminine options – the current model of a straight-cut skirt, a trouser or a three-piece suit with a vest.
Fashion is social codes that you need to get into in order to be believed and listened to.Having created an actual image, you will appear as a specialist who is aware of trends, regardless of age and status.
To feel as confident and comfortable as possible, choose well-fitting items made from quality fabrics that do not hinder your movements. The less fabric wrinkles, the less you will think about your appearance. You can choose tensel or cotton in the summer – but let it be a composition with an admixture of synthetics, which excludes the appearance of folds.
You should not come to an interview in clothes with many details – they, like too bright makeup, will distract the interlocutor from the subject of the dialogue.
Selection of a set
Things should not only match your appearance and field of activity, but also be combined with each other. The classic of an office suit – a trouser set – looks good in a single color. In addition to the traditional gray, blue and black suits, there are many options in beige, brown or wine tones.
When choosing a suit with a skirt, pay attention to two important points: length and style. In a skirt that is too short or too tight, it will simply be uncomfortable for you to sit, and the interview can take a long time.A pencil skirt is considered a versatile option and can be combined with both short jackets and long fitted jackets. With blazers and straight jackets to the thigh, you need to be careful so that the figure in this combination does not seem monumental.
You can wear a blouse under the jacket, the optimal length is up to the wrists or ¾. The blouse should not be too tight. And so that it does not wrinkle, choose a jacket of such a size that there is a little space between the layers of clothing. This will make you feel comfortable and able to focus on the essence of the conversation.
A business dress will save you time in choosing the right set. On the one hand, it is a full-fledged suit in itself, on the other, it can be complemented with a jacket or blazer to feel more secure and confident.
If you prefer a more relaxed smart casual – try a combination of a shirt and cropped trousers or trousers-palazzo. Your interview shirt should be tucked into your belt, but with a loose fit, you won’t feel constrained. If you prefer tapered trousers, choose a top so that you can wear a belt and accentuate your waist, and feel more collected.
How to choose accessories?
An austere business look requires flawlessly selected accessories. Decorations should complement, not be conspicuous. Expensive items such as rings and earrings with large gems are best left for another reason. Give preference to laconic design and elegance.Exceptions can be in the creative industries or the advertising industry: in this case, you can give free rein to your choice.
Classic business accessories for women are shawls or scarves around the neck, strict and graceful belts, discreet jewelry, laconic bags.
Shoes should be stylish and comfortable at the same time.
What not to wear
A work atmosphere implies a discreet style. If you want to emphasize your figure, you can afford a fitted silhouette – but without deep neckline and transparent elements.
Sheer dresses, thigh-high cutouts, short shorts and skirts would be inappropriate choices for this meeting. The same goes for shoes: coming to an interview in clogs or open-toed sandals is bad form.
90,000 Seven questions about the environmental impact of the fashion industry
Leading clothing manufacturers are looking for a compromise between the speed of product creation and profitability of the business on the one hand, and the demand of buyers for environmental friendliness of products and the growing threats to the environment on the other.
In the fashion industry, a conflict is brewing between shoppers’ wallets and their conscience. From the rise of Zara and H&M to brands such as Boohoo, citizens have become accustomed to the mass market, and are now updating their wardrobe quickly and cheaply. But at the same time, consumers have a growing desire to harm the planet as little as possible with such behavior, because the textile industry can cause significant damage to the environment. Now, apparel manufacturers are trying to bring fashion in line with the principles of a sustainable economy. Is green the new black now?
1.What is sustainable fashion?
This is a movement to make garments more sustainable by making adjustments in the design, production, distribution and recycling stages. The task is to get away from the principles of “fast fashion” – high-speed production of clothes, by the way, not always cheap. Quickness is needed due to constantly changing tastes and trends, which leads to a one-off attitude to such things on the part of consumers. There is also the topic of respect for animals, and the topic of social responsibility of the industry. The latter is about combating child labor and poor working conditions in developing countries.
2. How does clothing harm the environment?
With global apparel production doubling over the past 15 years, the CO2 emissions from the textile industry exceeded those of the shipping and international travel industries combined. Cotton and polyester make up 85% of the raw materials in garment production, and both of these materials are far from sustainable.
Making Garment Recycle Easier: Three Solutions
For example, polyester is made from crude oil, which can be extracted with toxic leaks and water pollution.Basically, polyester cannot be biodegradable. In addition, the fabric is dyed with chemical dyes that contaminate groundwater sources. Cotton, on the other hand, requires a lot of water and insecticides as a crop. Growing cotton for one T-shirt requires 2.7 thousand liters of water – this is how much a person needs for three years of life. Of course, some firms use organic cotton grown without the use of pesticides, but this is only 1% of the world harvest, and such cotton requires no less water.
3.What role do consumers play here?
People started buying more clothes and keeping them less. For example, in Europe, the average number of times a piece of clothing is worn has dropped from 200 times in 2000 to 160 times in 2015. When washed, polyester and nylon items give off tiny fibers that pollute sewage and ultimately the oceans. While it was the demand for cheap clothing that prompted the fashion industry to develop in this way, the situation is now changing. According to surveys, in the UK, about 50% of consumers care about how their clothes were made.Among young people under the age of 24, this figure exceeds 60%.
4. What do companies do?
Two years ago, 94 firms, representing a total of 12. 5% of the fashion market, signed the Global Fashion Agenda 2020. According to it, each company has a set of individual tasks, while the general goals are to use water more efficiently, develop sustainable fibers and create new processing systems. Some brands also have their own initiatives.
- So, Adidas has promised to use exclusively recycled plastic by 2024.
- H&M plans to switch entirely to recycled and other environmentally friendly materials by 2030.
- PVH, the owner of the Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger brands, intends to use raw materials only from environmentally friendly sources: for cotton and viscose by 2025, for polyester by 2030.
- Urban Outfitters launched a women’s clothing rental service in the United States.
- Prada has pledged to replace all current nylon with more environmentally friendly materials such as synthetics made from recycled plastics found in the oceans.
In addition, after decades of listening to reproaches from animal advocates, Prada recently followed the example of Burberry and Gucci by banning the display of natural fur on the catwalks.
5. Can we already say that the ice has broken?
Not yet. The introduction of new practices does not yet compensate for the rapid growth of the industry, which could reach 100 million tons of shoes and clothing purchased annually by 2030. The same Global Fashion Agenda, revised in 2019, notes that without deep and systemic changes, the fashion industry is still far from meeting the sustainable development goals set by the UN.And the fast fashion industry is hardly slowing down. For example, in India, the partner of the Spanish Inditex in the development of the Zara network in the country, the Tata Group holding, is building its own textile empire that promises consumers “super-fast fashion” – 12 days between the runway and the counter, and even at half price.
6. And what about unclaimed goods?
It is believed that every second in the world, a volume of textiles equal to one dump truck is sent to landfill or burned. Only 1% of materials produced for sewing clothes are recycled. Even some sustainability companies are burning millions of dollars worth of unwanted clothing.
Burberry pledged last fall to stop the destruction of such items. In exchange, the company began to increase sales of clothing to its own employees, transfer unsold goods to firms that make new clothes from leather scraps, and even donate clothing to low-income people to dress up for interviews.
For its part, H&M assures that it only destroys clothing if it does not meet safety standards and is not suitable for sale, recycling or donation. And if H&M burns goods, it does so only at one power plant in Sweden, which is now systematically reducing the use of fossil fuels.
7. And what are the authorities of different countries doing?
As part of its G7 presidency, France (home to many popular brands, by the way) is now leading the transformation of the fashion industry towards greater environmental responsibility. François-Henri Pinault of France, CEO of Kering Holding, which includes the brands Balenciaga, Brioni, Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent, coordinates the industry’s efforts to reduce its environmental impact.
In addition, manufacturers in the EU will have to adjust to the new rules approved by the European Parliament. We are talking about sending at least 55% of municipal waste for recycling by 2025 and sending no more than 10% of waste to landfill by 2035.
True, in June 2019, the British authorities rejected a number of proposals aimed at combating “one-off fashion”, for example, a complete ban on burning clothes. In the United States, customs regulations inadvertently force companies to burn unclaimed imported clothing – a refund of duties paid is provided for its destruction.
Finally, there are clearly not enough regulations around the world to make the use of dyes a more transparent process. Without this, it is problematic to assess the real impact of the textile industry on nature.
90,000 In an ILO report, forced labor in picking cotton in Uzbekistan was “wrapped” in a cocoon of voluntariness
The question arises: is it possible to trust such statistics in a country where everything is “under the hood” of special services, who do not hide the fact that the telephone conversations of citizens are being tapped? The answer is obvious – the Uzbek people are simply afraid to be frank, especially on “political” topics.
Hence the predictable conclusion of the commission: the government of Uzbekistan has increased the punishment of officials for forced labor, while at the same time raising prices for harvested cotton from 500 soums per kilogram ($ 0.06) to 650 ($ 0.079), which, apparently, according to the vision of the ILO representatives, became an incentive to participate in mass labor in the fields.
It is not only human rights defenders who know that the ILO’s questionable research methodology is not credible.Experts at all levels of the Uzbek government are no doubt familiar with a detailed report by the professor of criminology at the University of Ulster, head of the Department of Applied Social Sciences and Political Science, Christian Lasslett under the unambiguous title “The World Bank and the ILO are whitewashing one of the most severe regimes” …
A year later, in July 2018, Lasslett reacted to the ILO’s annual “fine” report by co-writing with colleague Vanessa Gstrain the investigation “Measuring Forced Labor in an Authoritarian Context: An Expert Assessment of ILO Third Party Monitoring in Uzbekistan”. It pointed to a whole series of violations and inconsistencies committed in the course of monitoring forced labor (its Russian version can be found here).
The authors of the analysis draw attention to a number of points indicating “lack of informed consent from vulnerable participants”, “lack of adequate confidentiality of interviews and anonymity of participants”, “high risk of involuntary participation of cotton pickers in interviews”, “data collection conducted in conditions serious concerns about their veracity ”,“ impairment of the well-being of vulnerable participants, including the risk of punishment, ”and other cases of bad faith.
However, the representatives of this organization stated back in 2015 that the ILO experts did not find significant facts of the use of child and forced labor in cotton harvesting. Indeed, the monitoring was carried out jointly with Uzbek government officials. But in defiance of their deceptive assertions, evidence from other human rights organizations was already cited about attracting schoolchildren and state employees in the regions to work in the fields.
It should be noted that during the reign of the late President Islam Karimov, it was almost impossible for representatives of international organizations to get to Uzbekistan to conduct monitoring studies. The situation has changed slightly since 2015 – in connection with the projects of the World Bank, which was ready to provide loans in the amount of over $ 500 million, but subject to the elimination of forced labor. And in order to confirm that the country’s authorities really comply with the voiced requirements, the financial institution hired a special testing group of ILO experts.
The survey, arranged by the specialists of this organization, was carried out both in person and by phone. However, what objectivity can we talk about if the data were obtained in conditions when the research team acted in complete dependence on the Uzbek government, since the parties were united by mutually beneficial interests? The question is, of course, rhetorical.
Summing up, the Irish professor Lasslett and his colleague gave the ILO a number of recommendations on the correct research methodology, concerning, first of all, ethics, anonymity and confidentiality of the respondents, and the transparency of the research itself. In their opinion, the ILO must be independent from the Uzbek government, must prove its objectivity and impartiality.
An interview with independent journalist Dmitry Tikhonov with an expert in the Cotton Campaign, an expert on international labor relations, Andrei Mrost, sheds light on the current activities of the ILO, revealing some of its fraudulent schemes (together with the World Bank) aimed at concealing the state forced labor in the cotton harvest.
And in conclusion of the above.
On November 21, a day before the “Round Table” scheduled in Tashkent with ILO specialists to discuss the results of the “monitoring”, a meeting on the same topic with local human rights activists, including those known for their adherence to principles and “obstinacy” was held in one of the capital’s hotels. Elena Urlaeva and Malokhat Eshankulova. The “inconvenient” human rights defenders, apparently, were invited at the last moment. Malokhat wrote about the essence of the conversation on her Facebook page, describing it as openly dishonest actions of the so-called “human rights experts” from abroad.
Expressing her disagreement with the conclusions of the monitoring group, Eshankulova, in particular, writes: “I recall the words of our late human rights activist Vasily Inoyatova at one of such meetings, where the discussion about the results of the annual reporting of the ILO (…) foreign international organizations cooperated with Uzbekistan, contributed to human rights activities in the country. But I am worried about one thing: for some reason, these organizations, as soon as they start their activities in the republic, only the names remain foreign, and the methods of work do not differ from the local, Uzbek ”.
“It worries me too,” continues the violently persecuted journalist and human rights activist. – So why is forced labor gaining new positions in Uzbekistan instead of being eliminated? Isn’t this also part of the fault of the International Labor Organization? (…) For 4-5 years now, the ILO (…) has been trying to hide the guilt of local administrators, turning a blind eye to the true state of affairs. I told her leader straight to her face that he had no right to lie, it’s the same as slandering the Uzbek people. If you cannot cope with your duties, be so kind as to make room for us – we can do it ourselves somehow … ”.
Malokhat Eshankulova, tired of endless police detentions, is sure that the unfortunate observers from the ILO do not need truth and justice. Despite repeated requests for monitoring together with human rights defenders who know the practice of conducting research of this kind in Uzbekistan, they continue to ignore these proposals and, instead of experienced and courageous civil activists, choose almost random people on the basis of the principle of “good-not-good”, “loyal-not-loyal” …
“And then [at the meeting] it suddenly sounded that, it turns out, this year there was no compulsion during the mobilization for picking cotton,” she says indignantly. “Here is my [mobile] phone, it was just broken by law enforcement officers during our monitoring!”.
As a result, the main observers of the cotton campaign – Elena Urlaeva and Malokhat Eshankulova – the ILO commission “waved its hand”, saying that if necessary they would be invited again …

90,000 Choosing clothes for an interview based on business dress code Bond & Stinson Blog
Choosing clothes for an interview used to be easy. We put on a suit and tie, polish our shoes, comb our hair. However, these days, with the emergence of a large number of subcultures, the diversification of understanding of business style and the increasing spread of work outside the office, the rules have become much more. Knowing what to wear and when is just as important now as shaking hands and maintaining eye contact.A job interview is a chance to make the right impression, and your dress style will play an important role.
We tried to analyze three different segments where style matters, while the IT industry, the scientific sphere, etc. remained outside the framework.
Finance and Consulting
If the headquarters of the company you are interviewing for is on Wall Street (this same category of employers would include all firms that would like to have hq on Wall Street), the only suitable option is a formal suit, formal shirt and “boring ” accessories.Finance is perhaps one of the most conservative areas, therefore it does not accept significant deviations in appearance from a given standard – it is expensive and elegant. And for the first meeting, it is better to limit yourself to a dark blue or dark gray suit with a white shirt and a plain tie. The safest option. Shoes will play just as important a role as watches. No G-Shock or sneakers, you better just leave them at home and put on your classic prom boots if there is nothing other than them.
Strict dark suit
All of the above can be attributed to consulting. The fact is that employees of consulting companies by nature of work constantly meet with their clients. And clients can be from different spheres, so it is important for consultants to always look their best, to communicate confidence, professionalism and knowledge by their appearance alone. Often, consultants have to cover up their young age by dressing like their client – a top manager of the company. A dark blue suit, an expensive classic watch and tie from Ermenegildo Zegna or Hermes – this is the reference of the consultant. And in the interview, it’s best for you to be like the benchmark – the less you need to prove that you are the perfect candidate.
Regardless of whether your company is an industrial holding or a service provider, there is an established culture of dress. It can range from a strictly classic dress code to a relaxed punk style. Nevertheless, if you do not know in advance what the rules are in the company, it is better to play it safe.Trousers instead of jeans and a casual jacket instead of or over a sweater should do the trick. Your bow will be moderately strict, but at the same time not boring and pretentious. Even if you plan to work in such areas as, say, publishing, photography and media, this does not mean at all that you can give up on the culture of business clothes. It must be remembered that the less formal the rules are the more difficult to follow. After all, it is not easy to find a balance between a free style of clothing and professionalism. Perhaps a suit will not be mandatory here, but it is completely unacceptable to show up for work in shredded jeans.
Having received a job, you can be convinced that you can go to it in jeans – but in no case in old and worn ones. Make sure there are no holes on them and no bubbles on your knees: you are going to work, not to a nightclub.
Show up in a job interview in dark colors with bright, yet discreet accents. A striped or graphic design shirt and jumper paired with twill trousers is your choice.
Shirt and jumper paired with tight trousers
Even if the temptation to wear ultra-modern branded and expensive sneakers is great, do not give it up, it is better to wear leather moccasins or oxford shoes with laces or even suede boots, just not sports shoes. You need to exude confidence while highlighting your good taste. A well-tailored and skillfully fitted modern coat will help you with this.
Small and medium business
Often in such companies style is not a subject of special attention, but regardless of the sector in which this firm operates, you are dealing with people: they should be pleased with you, and you should be pleased with them.
If you want to dress comfortably for an interview, but in a professional and businesslike manner, you may well wear a shirt or sweater with a tie and light-colored cotton trousers. It is important for you to look responsible and collected, as well as presentable.
Convenient, but professional and businesslike
For an interview and subsequent work in the office, you should come complete with a perfectly fitting shirt, possibly with a tie of conservative shades and a cardigan. Try wearing classic or corduroy pants for your interview, and then discreetly incorporate dark jeans into your business wardrobe. If you devote most of the day to walking around the city, then for bad weather you can wear half boots to protect your feet from dampness, and in the office you can already change into shoes.
If you want to make the best possible impression in your interview, remember: it is created within the first 30 seconds of your meeting. It is important to radiate professionalism, taste and dignity that accompany a person who is confident in himself and in his choice.

90,000 Business man. Florist – about naughty brides, cotton fashion and allergies to roses
If I didn’t love flowers, I wouldn’t do all this.
But, unfortunately, people are afraid to give me bouquets – they probably think that I will find fault. And in vain, because at these moments I completely turn off the florist: I don’t care how the flowers are located in the composition, how much it costs and how it was packed, I just enjoy it. Recently they gave me an armful of garden lilacs, and it was so nice that for the first hour I could only talk about lilacs.
I can’t say what my record is for the number of bouquets per day.
In the week before March 8, we sleep two hours a day and do not understand when the day begins and when it ends.Tales about the fact that florists sleep in boxes on the night of March 7-8 are true. If, of course, they sleep at all. I can say for sure that on the last Mother’s Day I made 40 bouquets.
Engineers and accountants who are tired of sitting with pieces of paper most often come to floristry courses: “I really want something creative and feminine, I will do flowers!”
For some reason, it seems to everyone that florists flutter like butterflies from flower to flower and inhale heavenly aromas. In fact, this is hard physical and moral work: you have to be a psychologist who understands the client, an accountant who understands invoices, a cleaner who constantly washes and sweeps something (by the way, the more garbage during work, the faster you develop ), and, of course, a loader who carries boxes and flowerpots with water. This is a huge load: due to standing work, my back, arms, legs hurt. Therefore, in Europe it is believed that a florist is a male profession.
Natasha Koroleva ruined everything.
Guys are still afraid to buy yellow tulips, and girls come to our workshop, look at these flowers and wonder why they are not given them. There are clients who are afraid of all yellow colors in general – they are worried that the girl will misunderstand them. Another stupid superstition is counting the number of flowers in complex compositions. For even-odd parity, only mono-bouquets or small compositions should be checked, everything else is at the discretion of the florist. He can, for example, put two carnations in one bouquet, provided that there are many other flowers.
If you are in a bad mood, meditate, and do not put it in flowers.
I have a secret.
If a client comes and says that he wants a pink-lilac bouquet, and you are already tired of this combination and recently they brought amazingly beautiful raspberry spray roses to the store, you can gently start to dominate: “Look what we have here! Aren’t they wonderful flowers? “Sometimes I take a terrible risk – they ask me to compose a delicate composition for my grandmother, and I add bright colors there. But my experiments have never failed. Very often people do not understand what they really want, and due to lack of experience they cannot predict the result. When the florist lets himself go, pushes the boundaries, the most interesting bouquets are obtained.

In addition, Petrova said that according to the head physician of the local hospital, the health of hospitalized children is out of danger:
“The older woman has bruises on her face, received when toys fell on her because of the explosion.
