21 Organic Cotton Clothing Brands For The Entire Family — Sustainably Chic
With warmer days on the way, it’s time for light layers and summer dresses again! If you’re searching for a new piece for your wardrobe, but you want to shop sustainably, it’s important to avoid certain materials that are bad for the planet.
One such material is cotton; while one of the most widely used textiles in the fashion industry, popular for its breathability and versatility, it’s also one of the most environmentally damaging.
Is Cotton Sustainable?
Cotton farming is incredibly water-intensive, taking 2,700L of water to make just one conventional cotton t-shirt – that’s about three years’ worth of drinking water! Cotton is also the most pesticide-dependent crop in the world, using chemicals that pollute waterways and ecosystems and poison the farmers who grow the crops.
Why You Should Choose Organic Cotton
Organic cotton is a better alternative to cotton as it’s produced and certified to organic agricultural standards. Its production sustains the health of soils, ecosystems and people by using natural processes rather than artificial inputs. Most importantly, organic cotton farming doesn’t allow the use of toxic chemicals or GMOs (genetically modified organisms).
Switching to organic cotton can save up to 91% of the water needed to grow the crops, 46% fewer greenhouse gases, and gives farmers more control as they don’t rely on buying expensive genetically modified seeds from a handful of big companies. Currently, only around 1% of all cotton produced is organic, so we need more people to ditch traditional cotton and opt for the more sustainable option of organic cotton. To be sure that what you’re buying is actually organic, look out for certifications like the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and the Organic Content Standard Certification (OCS).
We’ve looked at sustainable brands who use organic cotton and made a list of our favorite 21 …

About Cottonworld: It all began in the year 1987, when the Lekhraj family, with an established garment export-manufacturing unit, had an idea – to use the excess fabric to make quality cotton shirts. The shirts were put on sale and sold almost immediately. This is at a time when cotton clothing was not even considered fashionable. This prompted them to open their first store with just a few garments on display. The response was tremendous. And Cottonworld was born. Cottonworld became the first store in India dedicated to natural clothing. Set up in a leafy lane in Colaba, Mumbai, the brand is frequented by loyalists since its inception. The brand has now grown and spread its branches throughout the country with over twenty five stores in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Goa, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune and Gurgaon. Thus shifting from manufacturing to retail, in this magical little journey.
Our Philosophy: There is a difference between life and living. Life is what you are born with; living is what you make out of it. When you live close to yourself. When you share your soul with nature. When every cell of your body feels alive. When every pore wants to soak in more life. When you live undiluted, unadulterated, unbridled. You know that you have lived well… Because life is just a canvas. And living is the art. Life is inevitable. Living is optional.
Cottonworld is Pure Living.

Organic Cotton Clothing | Eartheasy Guides & Articles
Soft and comfortable, it’s used for almost every type of clothing.Socks, shirts, sweaters, dresses, jackets, sleepwear, sportswear and more: all begin in lush green fields of cotton. Traditional cotton farming, however, is hard on the environment.
Popular demand for cotton textiles, and competition among producers, has seen a big change in the last two generations: the increased use of pesticide. Cotton is the most pesticide-dependent crop in the world, accounting for 25% of all pesticide use.
These chemicals are taking a toll on our environment and human health as a whole. Every T-shirt made of conventional cotton requires 1/4 pound of harmful chemicals.
Every T-shirt made of conventional cotton requires 1/4 pound of harmful chemicals.
According to the USDA, in one year alone over 50 million pounds of pesticides were used on U.S. cotton fields. Pesticide and fertilizer use on cotton has been linked to ground and surface water contamination, and the pollution of drinking water. In California, cotton ranks third in the state for total number of pesticide-related illness. Fish and wildlife and also impacted, with pesticides causing migration die-offs and diminished reproductive capacity.
Benefits of Organic Cotton
Organically raised cotton is gradually winning over new ground both on the farm and in the marketplace. No toxins or synthetic fertilizers are used. Organic cotton is produced without the use of harsh chemical bleaches or dyes, and is allergy free. Natural fertilizers, compost and soil amendments are used, and advances in natural pest control, such as ladybugs which destroy harmful insects, have helped make raising organic cotton a viable enterprise. Organic cotton clothing, unheard of a few years ago, is now available in many stores and online businesses.
A wide variety of products made from organically grown cotton is now available: shirts and pants, socks, underwear, skirts and blouses, sheets and pillowcases, towels and bathrobes. The range of styles can be somewhat limited, but new styles are being developed to keep pace with the growing demand for organic cotton clothing.
The Problem of Dyes
Colored dyes are still a problem, even with organically grown cotton. Dyes are toxic chemicals, and their use and disposal have harmful effects on the environment. Manufacturers are aware of these concerns and are developing new methods of coloring cotton are being developed to address this problem.
Organically colored cotton is being developed to address this problem, and earthtones are now available which use no dyes whatsoever. Today, colored cotton is grown “on the stem” in shades of brown, reddish brown, green and yellow.
- Reduces the use of synthetic dyes
- Costs less: estimates put naturally colored cotton 20 to 40% lower than chemically dyed cotton
- Is suitable for people with chemically sensitivities
- Has a noticeably soft texture
- Doesn’t fade; the color will actually deepen when you wash it.
Recycled Cotton is another, more earth-friendly choice in cotton clothing. Recycled cotton is cotton fabric that has been made from recovered cotton that would otherwise be cast off during the spinning, weaving or cutting process. Eartheasy’s recycled cotton socks are one example of this approach. A trade name for recycled cotton is Eco Fibre; there are no harsh chemicals used in the processing of this fabric.
The clothing business is big business, and there is big resistance to change from chemically-dependent processes to organic processes of clothing manufacture. The bottom line is demand. Manufacturers will do what the consumer dictates, and so the change to environmentally responsible, organic cotton clothing begins with you the consumer.

Practically everyone knows about comfortable and durable cotton clothes. For a long time this natural product has won its firm place among fabrics. Everything you need to know about the production and characteristics of cotton clothing, as well as the comfort and tactile sensations associated with such clothing, you will learn here.
Cotton – as a key component of clothing
The earliest evidence of the existence of cotton clothing appeared about 6,000 years ago.Already in those days, people discovered the valuable properties of small white boxes with fibers. Along with its breathability, cotton can be dyed in any color and used for any area of production. While weavers in 17th century England processed cotton for durable materials, manufacturing in Germany only became prominent in the 19th century. Whether it’s the desire of children to play or the sporting ambition of adults – modern cotton meets the daily demands of skin compatibility, cleaning and stress.People with sensitive skin will especially appreciate the very good compatibility of this fabric. Find out what the secret of cotton fabric is here.
How is cotton grown?
Mallow cotton requires a largely frost-free and full-flowing environment. Today, cotton is grown as an industrial raw material mainly in China, India, Pakistan and the United States. For cultivation, along with numerous wild species, only cultivated varieties of cotton are important. It takes six to seven months for the plant to grow and bloom. “Cotton Belt” – this is the name for the infinitely large fields of flowering cotton in the regions where cotton is produced. Later, the painstaking manual work was taken over by large combines and today they collect up to 1500 kg of raw cotton daily from one machine. After the completion of the ripening and drying process, the seeds and the wax layer are removed mechanically. From 100 kg of raw cotton, 35 kg of processed fibers remain, which are sent to factories for further production of raw materials.
How is the production process of cotton fabric going?
The cotton crop is graded according to fiber length, smell, purity and color. Depending on the quality of the raw material, the carefully untangled and combed fibers are delivered to the carding machines in various ways. They are pressed and then turned into ribbons, from which the spinning machines are then drawn and twisted into fine yarns. Huge looms produce essential fabrics such as denim. In this case, the fabrics differ from each other. Highly elastic denim, which originally served as the material for Levi Strauss work trousers in America, and which has conquered the whole world as blue jeans, consists of at least two, in most cases of several different threads. Dyed warp and un-dyed weft threads intersect at right angles and intertwine for extra strength. T-shirts from the so-called knitwear, on the contrary, are knitted. In this way, the required elasticity is achieved and precise garments can be created. The International Cotton Mark denotes pure cotton without any by-products. In addition, by observing important recommendations for the care of cotton products, you can achieve durability in their use.
What are the properties of cotton clothes?
The unique nature of cotton raw materials ensures incredible comfort in cotton garments. Strong and fluffy at the same time, cotton fibers surround the plant’s seed core. The original fibers absorb up to 20 percent moisture by their own weight in order to bring the kernel to germination. Less durable and gentle on the skin, clothes made from modern cotton fibers pamper comfort and the ability to regulate temperature and humidity. In addition, cotton clothing allows you to regulate the moisture content of the skin, since the finished fabric is able to retain up to 65 percent moisture from its own weight. Cotton’s three unique advantages – hydroscopicity (ability to wick moisture), lightness and strength – complement the unrivaled combination used to make eye-catching jeans, skin-friendly underwear and T-shirts, and durable towels. The only disadvantage of cotton clothes: due to the low degree of elasticity, natural fibers tend to wrinkle easily.
What makes organic cotton different?
Headlines about pesticides, over-fertilization and the illegal use of child labor in cotton products cast a shadow over this favorite material. It is not always obvious where and how cotton was grown and processed for T-shirts and other items. Originally the tropics were considered the birthplace of cotton, where the abundance of sun and rain allows it to grow in the best possible way.Since the harvesting of wet cotton is rather difficult, the areas of professional cultivation have been moved to dry regions. This, in turn, requires systematic irrigation, which is problematic in these areas. In many places, there is a threat of soil salinization due to excessive drainage of water. The production of a single T-shirt consumes an incredible amount of water (up to 2000 liters). The so-called organic cotton or organic cotton guarantees controlled, environmentally friendly growing of seeds, from natural fertilization to the preservation of the yield of arable soils and the level of water tables. Thanks to crop rotation and hand-harvesting, high-quality organic cotton garments such as bonprix colorful baby clothes are free of pesticides and chemical fertilizers and are doubly pleasant for you.
Organic cotton baby clothes
Caring mothers begin to worry about babies already from the first days of their life. Parents try to give their kids all the best: toys, food and clothes .The latter should be given special attention.
It is the clothes that give the first feeling of comfort or discomfort. A baby who has just been born is not placed among toys or fed with baby food. The child is wrapped in a sheet or diaper . At this moment, the small organism first touches the tissue. Thus, its quality is of the utmost importance.
In the maternity hospital, newborns are not wrapped in organic cotton sheets . However, caring parents can make sure they are available at home in advance. There is no doubt about the quality and usefulness of such products.
First, you need to understand the difference between regular cotton and organic cotton . To obtain material from it, the raw material must go through three stages of processing: spinning, twisting and, directly, fabric production.
Ordinary cotton is machine harvested. This is the first factor that reduces the quality of the finished product.Since in this process leaves and poisonous cotton seeds get to the main raw material, the poison of which protects the seed from pests. Further, various chemicals are used. For example, defoliants. They contribute to the dropping of the cotton heads from the branches. Accordingly, unripe fruits are processed together with ripe ones. This is the second factor that reduces the quality of the fabric.
Organic cotton is grown for the preservation of both the environment and human health. Making a profit as a result of such activities fades into the background. No machine harvesting is used in the production of organic cotton . This process is carried out only manually. The defoliants mentioned above also do not apply. As a result, the products made from organic cotton are softer to the touch and do not provoke the development of allergic reactions.
On garments made from organic cotton must have special signs: GOTS, Oeko-Tex Standard 100 or Fair trade (Fair trade). The presence of these signs indicates that the product was produced without the use of chemicals, and the used dyes are safe.

In this article, I will show you the battle between sustainable and traditional fabrics, using the highlights of bamboo and cotton as examples. Read – and place your bet.Vote with your dress! ))
Eco-fabrics confidently conquer more and more peaks. The global trend of ecological clothing did not leave aside famous couturiers, actors and musicians such as Stella McCartney, Bono, Alanis Morissette, Emma Watson. Today they create their own eco-clothing lines. The mass market is not lagging behind: ecofabrics are actively purchased by mass megabrands H&M, Nike, Gap, Levi’s, Marks & Spencer. And popular magazines – Elle, Shape, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair – publish entire issues dedicated to eco-fashion.
But, as always, next to a great idea that can (albeit not immediately) change the world, there is a cheap fake next to it. How to make sure that the fabric you bought is produced in Europe, and is not imported from nowhere, ordinary “Pakistani” raw cotton or hemp products confiscated from grandmothers from the gardens in the village)
Firstly, you should study the topic of environmentally friendly fabrics more deeply, and secondly, you should always require certificates. You can also see how the certificates look on our website ecotkani.ru. And to understand the topic deeper and make a decision for yourself: for or against reading this article will help you. Together we will take an honest look at the real state of affairs. Moreover, we will not confine ourselves to the slogans “Don’t wear cotton – it contains pesticides”, but consider in detail the facts and prospects.
The young and the brave are walking: Bamboo
When buying viscose bamboo products, the consumer should pay attention to two points. First, in the production of viscose bamboo, water is used, as well as chemicals. The second circumstance: factories processing natural raw materials – bamboo in viscose are located in China.
If you imagine what bamboo looks like, then you understand that the transformation of this plant into yarn of silky texture cannot do without some (albeit minimal) amount of chemical treatments. You must understand that it is impossible to demand from a modern person to wear with pleasure clothes made of fabric, in quality approaching the artisanal, primitive.Although it is still possible to make premium clothing without chemical treatments (I will discuss this below), but it will be insanely expensive. In the meantime, I will return to “bamboo for the average person.”
Why is bamboo viscose considered to be undoubtedly an environmentally friendly and natural material? Because: 1. after the development of the tissue, there are NO chemicals in it (that is, they will not get on your skin; which will happen with ordinary tissues). 2. the production process of this fabric was not harmful to the environment.3. the product is certified (that is, high quality is guaranteed) To give you an idea of the whole process, I will tell you in more detail how this product is made: A. bamboo leaves, as well as the soft part of the stem, are ground mechanically; B. the resulting mass is immersed in a solution of soda hydroxide. C. a homogeneous bamboo mass is passed through the smallest holes in a kind of “sieve” and hardens; G. is formed into threads from which bamboo yarn is made.
The fabric obtained from such threads is called bamboo viscose. The vast majority of bamboo fabrics sold on the world market are produced in China by chemical methods. It is usually used in combination with cotton to produce high quality expensive clothing and underwear for children and adults.
There is also bamboo fabric , produced without any chemical treatment at all, and yet excellent looking. She is good to everyone, but very expensive. To obtain a bamboo thread mechanically (it is also called bamboo flax), the bamboo stem is kneaded, with the help of natural enzymes, it is brought to a homogeneous mass. The fiber is then combed and formed into yarns. No chemicals are used in the production of bamboo flax. The bamboo linen fabric is 100 percent natural and sustainable. It is almost perfect: antibacterial, deodorant, elastic, breathable and moisture wicking, and is used for the production of drapery fabrics, bedding and clothing. In our catalog you can buy bamboo (RAYON) fabric.
Bamboo linen is a very rare and expensive fabric.
If the product is certified as environmentally friendly (GOTS, Oeko-tex, Eco-label, Ecocert certificates), we know that the factory where the bamboo yarn was produced uses a closed cycle (water is thoroughly cleaned, water and chemicals are used in a closed cycle and are not released into the environment), as well as the fact that the chemicals used in the production process are safe and do not remain in the final product. Interestingly, Canada and Germany have enacted regulations obliging bamboo fiber producers to use clear and separate names for the two types of bamboo fabric. If the fabric contains mechanically produced bamboo fiber, the manufacturer must indicate on the product label: bamboo fiber. And if we are talking about a thread obtained by a chemical method, then we will see the inscription “viscose bamboo”.
What else do you need to know about viscose bamboo? This material can replace cotton 100 percent.By the way, let us remember that cotton is a relatively new textile, which was “untwisted” only in the 20th century and causes enormous harm to the environment. So for those who consider eco-friendly fabrics a myth and utopia, I can say: Stop thinking in cliches. Everything flows, everything changes in accordance with the time in which we live. The 21st century is a time when you need to find an opportunity to combine the benefits of modern civilization and care for the environment. How to do this – I just told you using the example of such a material as viscose bamboo.
The old guard does not surrender yet: Cotton
But let’s talk about cotton too, how justified are the cries of conservationists and their protests against the huge amount of pesticides used in cotton fields? Few people know that it is on cotton plantations that more than 16% of all pesticides in the world are sprayed. Add to this millions of tons of chemical fertilizers, toxic drugs that are sprayed on cotton to shed ripe bolls … Incredible energy consumption, colossal water and soil pollution.According to the World Health Organization, every year on cotton plantations, a million people are seriously poisoned by pesticides. As we understand, harmful substances cannot but remain on cotton clothes.
We all represent the production process of cotton clothes. Chemical treatments in it are such that the described similar processes in the manufacture of bamboo threads seem harmless child’s play. Of course, there is such an alternative as eco-cotton (plantations are located in Europe, Canada). It is harvested by hand, creates normal working conditions for workers, does not harm nature. But this cotton is very expensive. You can distinguish it again by the certificate. As a rule, only very well-known manufacturers can afford such an expensive pleasure, so all the information about them can be found, there are very few of them. If you decide to delve deeper into the topic, you can literally count them on your fingers.
What is the outcome of the battle of the titans bamboo or cotton? Eco-friendly and regular fabrics? I bet on eco-friendly.Because environmentalists around the world will only tighten the requirements. No matter how greedy people are, we all want our kids to have a place on the Green Planet, and not on the Mutant Planet. Yes, today eco-friendly fabrics made of cotton are quite expensive (especially in their pure form, as I described with the example of bamboo flax and its “alternative for the masses” – bamboo viscose). But if environmentalists take the gills even more strongly (and this is only a matter of time), the whimsical cotton will not last long without doping and pesticides. Unpretentious crops such as bamboo, hemp and the like, resistant to infections and not requiring special watering, will win. What are you voting for? It is better to make your choice now … We cannot change the ecological state and production methods overnight. But each of us can take our little step towards development or stay on the sidelines.
