The Blender Pencil Test – 901 Art

Every colored pencil artist seems to have their favorite blender. I’ve never been very consistent in my choice of which blender to use for any given project, so today I created a set of charts to compare how each performs. I thought you might like to see the results.

During the last couple of years, I have collected and been gifted with a variety of blenders. To me, they are essential tools for creating really solid areas of color and, more importantly, creating that deep and rich multi-colored and layered look that takes colored pencil art from drawing to painting.

It’s pretty important to know your tools, so I decided it’s time to give them a real test drive.

The seven blenders tested are:

  • Caran d’Ache Full Blender
  • Derwent Blender
  • Derwent Burnisher
  • Koh-i-Noor Polycolor Blender
  • Lyra Rembrandt Blender
  • Prismacolor Colorless Blender Pencil
  • Prismacolor Colorless Blender Marker

 

Figuring that the blenders of a certain brand would perform better with pencils of that same brand, I tested on color swatches of Prismacolor Premiers, Derwent Coloursoft, and Caran d’Ache Luminance 6901 pencils. To make the comparison as accurate as possible, I chose similar colors for each brand, and was careful to create swatches that, allowing for a bit of color variation, were as identical as possible.

Each swatch has four color layers: two in blue and two in violet, and the blending pencil was applied with a medium-heavy pressure. 

And here are the charts. The left side of each swatch is unblended; the right side is blended.

Across all three samples, based on each blender’s ability to combine colors and cover-up background paper fibers,  the Derwent Blender clearly performed best, followed by the Prismacolor and Koh-i-Noor blenders.

I was pleasantly surprised by the Koh-i-Noor, which is a new brand to me and I didn’t expect it to do such a great job.

The Caran d’Ache is unique among the blenders; it’s a blender stick, about the size of a pencil, and can be sharpened like a pencil. Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed to find it a bit scratchy against the paper surface and not quite as effective as some of the others.

Although the Derwent Burnisher is technically not a blender and is marketed as providing a “rich, glossy finish to your art,” it also blends quite well.

The Prismacolor marker worked very well, but an important note: if you are creating art which might be entered in a show requiring “100% colored pencil,” using a marker may be outside the rules.

Also, I found that additional applications of the marker didn’t really result in a more blended look, but additional application of any of the pencils does.

The Lyra is the least aggressive blender in this comparison, but may be the perfect choice for lighter blending.

First you need a good item or model. Drawing from life is ideal as you can render the texture and change the lighting and position as you wish.

Freehand drawing

Freehand drawing of a rose gives you a more relaxed and energetic drawing. You should try to accommodate imperfections and not get discouraged by any lack of precision in the experiment.

This way you can figure out that it is best to work from the inside, keeping the internal details fairly minimal until you loosely sketch out the entire flower and stem. This allows the proportions to be adjusted when needed.

Draw with a light touch

Work very lightly at first and follow the process changes. The edges of the rose petals are light, so you don’t want them to be outlined with a dark pencil.

Use a red colored pencil to sketch the basic shapes very easily, working from the inside to the outside.

Shading the base color of the rose

With the outline completed, you can start layering the color into your flower.

Start with a foundation that will allow you to mix light and dark tones later. Your rosette may be slightly different, but the base color example has a rich, slightly cool vibrant hue (Prismacolor PC924 Crimson Red).

Start with lighter shades

Many of these shaded areas will be darker, but it is best to start with a fairly even and light layer of color. For the same reason, it’s a good idea to shade some areas with a clear blender pencil (like Prismacolor PC1077).Add this base where the lightest colors should be on the petals.

When shading, aim for a fairly smooth surface. One way to achieve this is to use more circular motions with a pencil. If you are using strong directional shading, think about the outline of the shape you are working on.

Shading Rose Tones

The surface of an object is rarely completely uniform, even if it is itself painted the same color. Shadows, as well as direct, indirect and reflected light create variations on it.

In the rose, you can see a blue-violet hue in many areas, so it is shaded before adding another layer of red. For this, Prismacolor PC932 purple is a good choice.

You have a lot of room for error with this kind of layering, so feel free to experiment. Try different colors and layering methods for interesting effects.

Shading of dark areas and shadows

The rose begins to take shape.Now we need to build some of the darker tones.

With a limited selection of colors, you will need to apply the tone with dark pencils, and not just choose a dark red. Green may be a good option, but if you want the shadows in the rose petals to be very dark, black is still the best choice.

Looking at the reference photograph you can see some dark streaks in the petals, so try to follow the pattern. Be very careful to preserve the light at this stage, because it is easier to add than it is then to subtract.

Building color layers

More colors are superimposed on the pink picture, and you can use a combination of red colors to do this. For example, PC924 Crimson Red is the foreground color and a bit of Pc922 Poppy Red is used around the edges.

Small circular strokes raise the lower layers and the surface quickly becomes hard and almost polished. It’s amazing how quickly you can build colors with this method.

Using other colors of red, orange or any other color, depending on the effect you are looking for, helps keep your eyes from fatigue.This makes the colors as vivid as possible, which is a great work with colored pencils.

Adding Additional Shades

There are some very deep, dark areas on the rose, so the layers are constantly building up.

To add variation and coolness, some PC933 Violet Blue and PC901 Indigo Blue are used in the outer petals. First shade lightly and work over the area in one pencil, then in another, overlapping as you go.

Some directional shading is also used. This speaks to the curvature and texture of the petals.

Note that the edges of the petals are barely outlined. If you bring shadows to them, then the “contour” will be formed by the contrast between the lighter petal and the dark shadow.

Adding the last layers of color

The layering process continues on each petal. Start layering dark tones with reds in shadow. Then draw this color forward to the tips of the petals using pencils.

Using them with a colorless blender around the edges of the petals helps to keep the shades bright and luminous. Where they are too dull, a little pink or white can be used. You can also use an eraser to remove unnecessary items.

How to draw a lily with water-soluble colored pencils

This demo was adapted from the study “Colored Pencils: How to Mix Media for Creative Results” by North Light author Janie Gildov. Required tools and materials:

Surface: 115 lb (240gsm) hot pressed watercolor paper

Polychromos colored pencils: apple green, canary yellow, light chrome yellow, cream, golden ocher, gray green, lilac

STEP 1: Start Values ​​

Lightly draw a lily with the HB pencil. Apply cream to the lightest parts of the petals, leaves and buds. The cream serves as a unifying base for subsequent layers of color. Start developing the darker areas by applying first Gold Ocher and then Purple Light to the darkest parts of the petals, along the folds and deep into the throat of the flower. To blend and soften the color on the petals, apply Canary Yellow over the layered Golden Ocher and Purple Light, continuing into Cream.Use the same colors to suggest darker values ​​on the buds, leaves and stems, then add Apple Green and on top of it apply Gray Green to darken those values ​​even more.

STEP 2: Impress the vein lines and build color

Draw lines with a 9H pencil to indicate veins in leaves, stems and buds. Use a dull point to paint over impressive lines. Deepen the color on leaves, stems and buds first with a layer of Apple Green and then with a layer of thick Tuscan Red lead pencil. Apply another layer of golden ocher to the darker areas of the petals and then to Chrome Yellow Light to enrich and deepen the yellow.

STEP 3: Match color

Using a medium pressure layer of Canary Yellow, then Limepeel on leaves, stems and buds. Polish with a Colorless Blender pencil, then repeat with layers of Canary Yellow and Limepeel. Lubricate the flower with cream. This smoothes the paper tooth and gives the whole lily shimmery effect. Reapply Golden Ocher and Chrome Yellow Light, and add some Canary Yellow for warmth.Use Black Grapes to gently define indentations at the edges of the petals where they curve upward and where the stamens cast their shadows. Add black grapes and thick leaden Tuscan red to the stems, leaves and folds in the buds to darken meanings and enhance local color.

STEP 4: Sharpen and Refine the Image

With very sharp Verithin Tuscan Red and Vermilion, the edges and define the stamens and pistil in the center of the flower. Keep the defining edge clean and thin.Using circular strokes, texture the tips of the stamens with Verithin Tuscan Red and Golden Brown and then Black Grape. Apply a fine tip marker colorless blender to the stems and nibs to liquefy and mix the color. Add Verithin Vermilion to the top of the pestle and blend in the same way with a fine marker tip Colorless blender. Use a thick, high-pressure Tuscan lead red to mark irregular speckles on the petals, then apply a fine marker nib to them with a Colorless Blender, going slightly outside of each speckle to lightly smudge the color and avoid a uniform dotted dot.Effect.

STEP 5: Prepare masking film

Place a piece of masking tape shiny side up and paper side down on the lily. Use a permanent marker to trace the outline of the lily, buds, stems and leaves. It is important to use a permanent marker (not water-based) at this stage so that the ink dries quickly and does not stain.

STEP 6: Spatter background

Cut out the entire lily and the two small negative areas within it from the masking tape.

Remove the backing paper from the cutout masking tape and lightly press the protective pattern over the lily and leaves, aligning the lines and edges. Load your toothbrush with Albrecht Dürer Canary Yellow by wetting the toothbrush with water and running the water-soluble pencil back and forth across the wet toothbrush. Blot it lightly on the fabric. With your thumb along the edge of the bristle and using the lily as the epicenter, sweep the yellow pigment across the white background, radiating around and outside the image.Re-clean your toothbrush, reload it with pigment, reload and keep sprinkling until the entire background is evenly covered in yellow. If the drops are too large, do not blot them. Instead, touch the corner of the fabric to the oversized bead and wick away excess moisture. Finish the background with a layer of Wine Red and a final layer of Mauve. Allow each layer to dry for at least ten minutes before spraying on a new color.

STEP 7: Peel back the film and touch up

Allow background to dry completely. Gently pull back the edge of the masking tape and remove it. You can save it on a sheet of foil if you need to reposition it and reuse it. Touch up any areas where the film might have picked up the colored pencil. In any areas where the design extends beyond the lily and the white spots left, randomly scatter the background colors with a dry and very sharp, water-soluble pencil that matches the spray. Define and sharpen edges with Verithin Lavender or Tuscan Red.Mist with several light coats of UV lightfast spray in a well ventilated area.
