Find Out Everything You Must Know About Your Laundry Essentials at Spotlight!

The quality of your laundry essentials can make the difference where laundry is concerned. A superior washing powder, a quality washing machine, and other items can certainly contribute to better laundry cycles in your home.

Do you wish to optimise the laundry process in your home? Need more information to do just that? Read the information provided by Spotlight below!

What Should I Know About Laundry Detergent?

Everyone knows that a laundry detergent can make a big difference in your laundry cycles, but what should you look out for? One of the main things to consider is the type of laundry detergent you obtain. While all types of laundry detergent will effectively clean your clothes, the liquid detergents are better for stains involving oil and grease. However, if you are looking for the most economical form of laundry detergent, powdered detergent will be the best option.

While it may not be the first thing on your mind, the ingredients used in your washing detergent can make a difference in its performance. Some laundry detergents will contain enzymes and surfactants, which can remove the heaviest of stains. However, these ingredients usually add to the price of your detergent. Even though cheaper detergents can have surfactants too, these usually focus on lifting certain stains before the washing machine can rinse them away. Therefore, they are not always effective to remove tougher stains.

How Do I Choose the Correct Fabric Softener?

When it comes to fabric softener, most Australians have free reign. However, it can become more complicated for people with allergies. Certain fabric softeners can cause allergic reactions, which are often caused by fragrance. Therefore, these Australians should use a non-fragranced fabric softener.

Some fabric softeners do a better job than others too, depending on the ingredients they contain. Of course, this does not mean that the most expensive fabric softeners are the best ones, but it does mean that you should have a closer look at those ingredients.

How Do I Find the Best Washing Machine?

Choosing the right washing machine could certainly help to optimise your laundry cycles. Of course, the best washing machine for one household is not necessarily the best one for another household. So, how do you determine what the best washing machine is for your household?

Before you start looking for a washing machine, it is quite important to look at the space you have available. For example, if you only have a small space for a washing machine, there is little point in buying a heavy-duty washing machine that can take more than ten kilograms of washing. You must also look at how many family members you must do laundry for. If you are on your own, or if your household is limited to two people, then you will get away with a smaller washing machine of six to seven kilograms. However, if you have a big household with many children, you will need that bigger washing machine.

When you are browsing a range of washing machines, you might notice that there are lots of affordable options. However, we must mention that the most affordable washing machines are not always the best since they might use more energy than the more expensive options. So, while you might save on the initial price of your washing machine, you may spend more on water and electricity during its operation.

Most manufacturers and retailers will put the details of the washing machine online – this gives customers the opportunity to look at the specs of the appliance before making their purchase. Always look at the energy rating on your appliance and grab the most energy-efficient to save on your energy bill.

We must also mention that there is a difference between top loaders and front loaders where cleaning power is concerned. Studies have shown that top loaders are efficient for regular household laundry, but less efficient when it comes to those tough stains. So, if the clothing you must wash has a lot of tough stains, be sure to grab a front loader instead.

What Dryer Should I Buy for Maximum Efficiency?

Much like washing machines, dryers have a certain energy rating. If you want to make sure your electric bill does not go into the astronomical amounts, be sure to check the energy rating of the dryer.

There are also different types of dryers – this goes from the standalone dryer to the semi-integrated and integrated dryer. The standalone or freestanding dryer is more versatile, but the integrated options look better in your interior. So, to find the perfect dryer, you must look for the perfect combination of capacity, design, and versatility.

While most people prefer the standalone, since it is easier to replace, there are some benefits to the integrated dryer. This type of dryer could look better in your interior and blend with its environment, so do not rule it out just yet!

L.

A.’s Best Fashions on a Budget

Homegrown Los Angeles fashion runs the gamut from red-carpet-ready looks by Rodarte to slouchy, soft T-shirts by James Perse, which makes this county a shopper’s paradise. Fortunately for us, there’s a whole crop of area stores that allow you to sample all of the latest fashions without breaking the bank. The trick is simply knowing where to look. And we’ve got that covered.

FIDM Scholarship Store

Located on the main campus of the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in downtown Los Angeles, the ample space is a treasure trove of never-before-worn clothing, shoes, and accessories. All of the merchandise—donated by more than 400 retailers, manufacturers, wholesalers, and showrooms as varied as Tadashi Shoji, BCBG, and Hot Topic—is priced below wholesale, often at 10% of the retail value. “You never know what you’re going to find,” says Ella Van Nort, director, stores of the FIDM Scholarship Foundation. The proceeds raise scholarship dollars for current FIDM students.

Shopaholic Sample Sales

Surprised by the dismal conditions at an NYC sample sale—bad lighting, merchandise scattered about—two friends (who like to remain anonymous) thought they could do better. After they returned to L.A., the pair began hosting traveling sample sales. They set up a permanent shop on L.A.’s design-magnet West Third Street in 2009 then added a second location on Santa Monica’s Montana Avenue in 2014. “Most of our items retail for $110 to $345,” the girls explain, “whereas our in-store price points generally average $38–$98.” Top-selling brands include LAmade, Bobi, Dolan, and B-Low the Belt, all of which are headquartered in Los Angeles County.

Sequin

Since opening her first boutique in 1981, Sequin owner Sara Schifrin has changed the name of her business and moved twice (she’s now in West L.A.), yet her customers always find her. “We have a very loyal clientele, from ages 16 to 90,” explains Schifrin. She has earned their devotion by selling quality merchandise at prices women can afford. She consistently stocks the L.A. brand Velvet, whose shipment arrives on the 15th of every month and quickly sells out. Other favorites include Just Black jeans for $78, Ethereal tops for $68, and Freeloader tees for $23.

Urban Outfitters Surplus

There are nearly 200 Urban Outfitters stores in the United States, but not with the prices you’ll find at this find on Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks. The space looks a lot like one of its full-price sister stores, but a closer look at the price tags reveals the difference. That’s because whatever doesn’t sell in the brand’s “regular” stores can end up here, explains John Hauser, chief officer of retail for Urban Outfitters. On a recent visit, skirts had been reduced from $79 to $29.99, blouses from $49 to $29.99, and men’s swimsuits from $39 to $5.

Rose & Sage

At her store in the posh Taluca Lake neighbourhood, Rose & Sage owner Soraya Ardakani handpicks each piece, mixing established designers with lesser-known local labels at lower price points. There are a few items by Michael Stars and Olivaceous on the higher end, but even their most expensive pieces are less than $200. Booties by Qupid are $43, blouses by Fun2Fun are $32, and sweaters by Jolie are just $24. The jewelry is a steal, too, with costume rings for $25 and classic silver and gold bracelets for $15. Every week the store offers its Surprise Me Friday sale: Shoppers might find that all long-sleeve items are 20% off, or everything in the store that’s red is reduced by 20%.

Veronica M

Los Angeles native Veronica Monroy-Ferrer began making miniskirts in her mother’s garage and selling them at the Fairfax swap meet back in 1996. At her shop on Beverly Boulevard, in the La Brea neighborhood, Ferrer stocks her own designs and a handful of others, all for under $200. “I wanted women to be able to wear clothes that looked expensive without paying the price to look great,” she explains. Ferrer’s tie-waist maxi-dresses and form-fitting tank dresses can go from day to night and reflect the Southern California lifestyle. In the back of the store, something is always on sale for $25, $10, or even $5, and there’s often a 50%-off rack out front.

William B + Friends

Manhattan Beach, Brentwood, Studio City, Century City, West Third, and another opening in Marina del Rey by end of 2015, with plans for more

William B launched in the 1980s and the line was carried by department stores like Barneys, Bloomingdale’s, and Neiman Marcus. In the late ’90s, a couple (who prefer to remain nameless) bought the company and a 42-foot RV, which they repurposed as a boutique on wheels. “The positive reaction to the lower price points inspired their decision to vertically integrate and try their hand at the retail game,” explains Kaitlyn Watsabaugh, whose title on her business card reads Generally Awesome. There are now six stores in the Los Angeles area, from Manhattan Beach to Studio City, and more in the works. “Our average price point is $62,” says Watsabaugh.

Local Business Spotlight: Family Tree Resale

Home » Blog » Local Business Spotlight » Family Tree Resale

Each month, the Greater Ravenswood Chamber highlights a different business from our neighborhood here on our blog. This month we caught up with Elizabeth Basa, owner of Family Tree Resale, in advance of her busiest time of the year. Elizabeth calls Family Tree a “social business”–offering awesome thrifting that supports a 1st-of-its-kind voucher program serving local non-profit organizations and public schools. With fall in the air and school back in session, our community is thrilled to see Family Tree safely re-open.

Note: Family Tree is currently open to the public six days a week (Tues-Sun) and offers private appointment shopping on Mondays.

Thanks for joining us Elizabeth. To start, can you tell us how long you’ve been doing business in the neighborhood and a little about what inspired you to start Family Tree?

Since opening, Elizabeth Basa (pictured) and Family Tree have donated over $175,000 in free goods to neighbors

We’ve been open at 5066 N Lincoln Ave for 7 years now. When I started, I wanted to build something that was of benefit to others that helped both people and the environment in an ongoing manner.

What can shopper expect when they come visit your store?

A fabulous thrifting experience! If you love the thrill of shopping thrift, come check out our shop! It’s 5,000 square feet of thrift store heaven. Our store is much bigger than it looks from the outside. Clothing for everyone. We only put out items in the best condition, keep prices reasonable, and organize everything for easy shopping. Toys- we have an absolutely massive toy department. There’s so much more; books, kitchen items, decor, jewelry, and framed art. Each day there’s something new!

Is there a busy season for thrifting?

Fall through Christmas! As the weather changes, people love to come in for cozy fall and winter clothes. As the holidays approach, we put out thousands of home goods, decor and gift items which are such fun to browse. Shopping with us will save 75-90% off of regular retail prices.

What have you enjoyed most about owning a business in the neighborhood?

I absolutely love the people! The Ravenswood community is friendly and supportive to small businesses. I enjoy building relationships with our voucher partners, customers and donors, and feeling a part of something cohesive and genuine. I sincerely feel cared for here.

What’s been the biggest challenge you’ve faced these last 7 years?

Enjoy some vinyl ASMR courtesy of Family Tree

Staffing! We always have more work to do than we can accomplish with our small staff. As we grow, we plan to add to our team.

Is there something first-time-customers tend to find surprising about Family Tree?

Usually people come to enjoy the thrift shop experience, but don’t realize there is a wide-spread charitable program behind it all.

Can you tell us a little more about that? On your website and Facebook pages you call Family Tree a “social business.” What does that mean?

Our entire store model is centered on giving back and community engagement! Since the start of Family Tree, we have donated back over $175,000 in free goods to local neighbors. We also are the only store to offer a free, independent voucher program that services both public schools and area charities. We have over a dozen partnerships, serving several CPS schools, and a plethora of various charities.

Do you have a favorite spot near the shop for a coffee date or casual lunch?

Groundswell! I love getting a coffee, tea or a sandwich and enjoying the calm vibe of this place. The owner, Jason, is also very generous, and partners with our shop to offer coupons to our donors!

What is your vision for Ravenswood over the next ten years?

Even more small, thriving businesses. Possibly more outdoor and community gatherings, once it is safe to do so.

In Iran, a public suicide spotlights anguish over economy

TEHRAN  —

Ruhollah Parazideh, a wiry 38-year-old with a thick mustache and hair flecked with gray, was desperate for a job. The father of three in southern Iran walked into a local office of a foundation that helps war veterans and their families, pleading for assistance.

Local media reported that Parazideh told officials he would throw himself off their roof if they couldn’t help. They tried to reason with him, promising a meager loan, but he left unsatisfied.

He soon returned to the gates of the building, poured gasoline over himself and put a lighted match to his neck. He died from his burns two days later, on Oct. 21.

Parazideh’s suicide in the city of Yasuj shocked many in Iran, and not just because he was the son of Golmohammad Parazideh, a prominent provincial hero of the country’s 1980-88 war with Iraq that left hundreds of thousands dead.

It put a spotlight on the rising public fury and frustration as Iran’s economy sinks, unemployment soars and the price of food skyrockets.

His death occurred outside the Foundation for Martyrs and War-Disabled People, a wealthy and powerful government agency that helps the families of those killed and wounded in Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution and subsequent wars.

“I was shocked when I heard the news,” said Mina Ahmadi, a student at Shahid Beheshti University north of Tehran. “I thought that the families of [war] victims enjoyed generous support from the government.”

Iran valorizes its war dead from the conflict with Iraq, known in Tehran as the “Sacred Defense,” and the foundation plays a big role in that. After the revolution installed the clerically run system, the foundation began providing pensions, loans, housing, education and even some high-ranking government jobs.

After Parazideh’s suicide, the foundation fired two of its top provincial officials and demanded the dismissal of the governor’s veteran affairs advisor as well as a social worker, lambasting their failure to send the distressed man to a medical facility or elsewhere for help, local media reported.

The fallout reached the highest levels of government. Ayatollah Sharfeddin Malakhosseini, an advisor to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, called the case a warning that officials should “get rid of unemployment, poverty and the disruption of social ties.”

In 2014, parliament launched an investigation into one of the main banks affiliated with the foundation for allegedly embezzling $5 million. Its findings were never revealed.

The foundation is known to funnel financial support to Islamic militant organizations in the region, including Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, leading the U.S. to sanction it in 2007 for supporting terrorism.

Parazideh’s suicide was one of several in recent years that appear driven by economic hardships.

Self-immolations killed at least two other veterans and injured the wife of a disabled veteran outside branches of the foundation in Tehran, Kermanshah and Qom in recent years.

As the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked economic havoc, suicides in Iran increased by more than 4%, according to a government study cited by the reformist daily Etemad.

For many in the Middle East, the act of self-immolation — the protest used by a fruit vendor named Mohamed Bouazizi in Tunisia that became a catalyst for the 2011 Arab Spring uprisings — evokes broader discontent with economic woes and the lack of opportunity.

“I don’t know where we are headed because of poverty,” said Reza Hashemi, a literature teacher at a Tehran high school.

In 2018, then-President Trump withdrew America from Tehran’s landmark nuclear agreement with world powers and brought back sanctions on Iran, pummeling an oil-dependent economy already hobbled by inefficiencies. The pandemic has aggravated the economic despair. About 1 million Iranians have lost their jobs, and unemployment has climbed over 10% — a rate that is nearly twice as big among young Iranians.

Capital flight has soared to $30 billion, chasing away foreign investors.

Negotiations to revive the nuclear accord stalled in the five months since hard-line President Ebrahim Raisi took office, allowing Tehran to press ahead with its nuclear program. On Wednesday, the European Union announced that talks between world powers and Iran on reviving the deal would resume Nov. 29 in Vienna. The announcement stoked modest hopes that the Biden administration can resuscitate the accord.

“It’s impossible to hide people’s discontent with the economy,” said Mohammad Qassim Osmani, an official at the Audit Organization Services, a government watchdog. “The structure of the country is faulty and sick. We need an economic revolution.”

Iran’s currency, the rial, has shriveled to less than 50% of its value since 2018. Wages haven’t grown to make up the loss, and the Labor Ministry reported that over a third of the population lives in extreme poverty.

“About 40 million people in the country need immediate and instant help,” said lawmaker Hamid Reza Hajbabaei, the head of the parliamentary budget committee, in a televised debate last week, referring to nearly half the population.

The deepening poverty goes beyond just numbers, becoming a visible part of daily life. On Tehran’s streets, more people are seen searching through garbage for something able to be sold. Children sell trinkets and tissues. Panhandlers beg for change at most intersections — a rare sight a decade ago.

Petty theft has surged, testing the already tough justice system. Last week, a Tehran court sentenced a 45-year-old father of three to 10 months in prison and 40 lashes for pocketing a few packs of peanuts.

Gen. Ali Reza Lotfi, Tehran’s chief police detective, blamed the economy for the surge in crime, noting that over half of all detainees last year were first-time offenders.

It has fallen to Raisi to handle the economic pressures. He frequently repeats campaign promises to create 1 million jobs through construction and tourism projects.

But many low-wage workers, bearing the brunt of the crisis, have no hope.

Last month, in another case that drew huge attention, a 32-year-old teacher facing crushing debt hanged himself in the southern city of Gerash after a bank rejected his request for a $200 loan.

spotlight-arcs-value-village | Choose to Reuse

“We say our customers leave our store feeling lucky and rich,” says Arc’s Value Village marketing manager Molly King. “We sell really unique things that you never knew you wanted until you touch it, and then you’re so excited. It’s a little treasure hunt, you get a little thrill out of it. Then the cashier adds it up, and it’s not much money, and it’s incredible.”

Addressing the trend of online reuse clothing companies such as thredUP, King says: “Our inventory comes from the neighborhood and goes back to neighborhood. There’s a local aspect instead of shipping things all over.” For promotion, Arc’s Value Village relies on word of mouth and social media. “We can talk to our community of people to find out what they like and don’t like in a social way,” King says. “There was a dress I posted a couple weeks ago, an ‘80s Gunne Sax dress. There were speeding tickets in Richfield as people came to get that dress. They were texting me all night asking if the dress was still there. As a marketer, it’s kind of a dream come true to get people so excited immediately.”

Since Arc’s Value Village reopened in mid-May after closing under COVID-19 orders, the stores have been deluged with donations from people with extra time on their hands for decluttering. “So much amazing stuff has been donated,” King says. “As part of the COVID-19 [orders], we weren’t an essential business. A lot of thrifters had to disagree with that. People were ready to come back, and they’re happy to wear a mask and happy to keep the store occupancy low, so happy to get back in the store because they missed it. Thrifters gotta thrift—there’s something about thrifting that’s compelling to people.”

One of Arc’s Value Village’s unique services is free personal shopping stylists who select items for you based on your individual needs, then show them to you virtually. King tried the service: “It’s so fun to have someone pick stuff out for me, [they] picked things that I wouldn’t have gravitated to myself. It’s a good option for people who aren’t ready to leave their house right now. We’re trying to meet people where they are. People are super pressed for time … this feels like a luxury. Someone is spending time focusing on you and only you, and it’s a nice feeling. This is something that feels like a permissible indulgence.

With social-distancing protocols in place at the three locations in Bloomington, New Hope and Richfield, King says the current issue is balancing having enough volunteer sorters to get stuff ready for shoppers and having enough shoppers. Arc’s Value Village’s COVID-19 protocols require everyone to wear a mask, while stores are kept at half capacity so that people are spaced at least 6 feet apart. An employee is stationed at the front door to control the number of customers allowed into the store and to ensure mask wearing.

Two interesting tidbits: The “arc” in Arc’s Value Village is a noun, not an acronym — it’s arc, like part of a circle. And there’s a funny misconception around Arc’s Value Village’s charity concept, King says: “A lot of the shoppers think they’re the charity, that we’re providing cheap things for them. Actually, they’re the source of funding. They say, ‘you’re not supposed to make a profit, you’re a non-profit.’ We’re definitely trying to make money, a lot of money, because we use the money to further a cause. ” Store sales support The Arc Minnesota, which provides assistance and advocacy around health care, housing, education and public policy for people with intellectual and development disabilities. “It’s shopping with a purpose,” says King.

A part of Hennepin County’s Choose to Reuse program, Join the Circle encourages residents to buy used goods rather than new – not only to reduce waste and preserve natural resources, but to save money. By joining the circle, residents receive useful tips as well as exclusive benefits at participating retailers.
