Special guest to open Christmas shop

Langford Lakes Christmas Tree Farm at Langford Budville has chosen seven-year-old Tayen Gilbert from Bridgwater to cut the ribbon and launch the farm’s Christmas Shop on 17 November.

Tayan who suffers from the genetic condition, neurofibromatosis, will declare the shop open at 10am.

Kali Gilbert, Tayen’s mum, said: “We’re thrilled that Tayen has been selected to officially open Langford Lakes Christmas shop and Christmas Tree Farm. She’s very excited. As a family we love Christmas and this will be a treat for all of us.

“I decided to nominate Tayen as she’s a little star. She has a complex medical history and neurofibromatosis causes tumours to grow along nerves anywhere in the body. She was diagnosed at 22-months-old with bilateral optic pathway gliomas (tumours) that have spread through her brain to the back. She started chemotherapy straight away but unfortunately lost all vision just six weeks into treatment.

“Following this she needed bilateral shunts to drain fluid on her brain. She also has complex epilepsy and is currently now on her third round of chemotherapy treatment. None of this stops her though. Tayen is a powerhouse of fun and energy and captures the hearts of everyone she meets.”

The Gilbert family has fundraised for various charities over the years. They also visit Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) at Charlton Farm, which is Langford Lakes’ Charity of the Year.

Langford Lakes Christmas Tree Farm is hoping to collect as much money as possible for CHSW from the sale of mince pies and teas and coffees, aided by volunteers for the charity. The refreshments will be on offer from its launch event through to its last day of trading before Christmas on December 23. Last year the farm raised £2,955 for the organisation.

Kali added: “CHSW has been a great lifeline of support and respite for my whole family. It is a fantastic charity and we’re delighted to hear that Langford Lakes will be fundraising for it again this year.”

CHSW is currently the only provider of specialist hospice care for children in the region. It offers much-needed support for youngsters with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions and their families at its three hospices: Charlton Farm in North Somerset, Little Bridge House in North Devon and Little Harbour in Cornwall.

Reg Hendy from Langford Lakes Christmas Tree Farm, said: “We’re so pleased that Tayen will be helping us open our Christmas Tree Farm and shop for the festive season.

“She will be our VIP for the day and will also receive one of our British grown Christmas trees. We hope Tayen and her family have a fantastic morning with us kicking off the countdown to Christmas.

“We would also like to invite everyone to this special festive season launch event on Saturday, November 17. The fun starts at 10am with an official ribbon-cutting. Bring the family and enjoy the refreshments, helping us raise invaluable funds for CHSW.”

Langford Lakes Christmas Tree Farm is open every day from Saturday, November 17 until Saturday, December 23, 2018.

The Wellington is absolutely classic British dish.

Traditionally made with beef, our vegan version uses bold colours, wonderful textures and – of course – delicious flavours.

Butternut squash is the hero here and we create a lovely mushroom, walnut and thyme stuffing.

We also use shop-bought pastry to makes things super easy.

And with Christmas right around the corner, there’s no better time to treat yourself and your loved ones to this decadent centrepiece!

We love to serve our wellington with homemade gravy (get the recipe for the gravy here), roasties and glazed veggies.

Ingredients

  • 1 large butternut squash
  • salt & pepper
  • olive oil
  • 60g / 2.1oz walnuts
  • 3 shallots
  • 400g / 14oz chestnut mushrooms
  • 4 garlic cloves
  • 8 sprigs fresh thyme
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce, or tamari for gluten-free
  • 1 tbsp dijon mustard
  • 2 large handfuls of spinach
  • plant-based milk for glazing
  • 2 x 320g / 11.3oz pre-rolled vegan puff pastry, use gluten free for gf option

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C / 390°F fan-assisted.
  2. Trim the top off the butternut squash, carefully slice it in half lengthways, then peel and remove the seeds.
  3. Cut off the bulbous part from each half of the butternut squash (where the seeds were) leaving you with two long pieces and 2 bulbous pieces. Roughly chop the bulbous parts and transfer all the butternut squash to a baking tray. Drizzle with olive oil, season with salt and pepper, and roast for 30 minutes.
  4. Remove the tray from the oven, add the walnuts and roast for another 5 minutes.
  5. Add a drizzle of olive oil to a frying pan on a medium heat. Peel and dice the shallots, then add to the pan and fry for 8 minutes.
  6. Slice the mushrooms, and peel and dice the garlic. Add both to the frying pan and fry for 10 mins.
  7. Pick the leaves off the thyme and add to the frying pan, along with the soy sauce. Fry for 5 mins.
  8. Transfer the mushroom mixture to a food processor along with the dijon mustard, generous pinches of salt and pepper, as well as the walnuts and roughly chopped pieces of squash from the oven (leave the long pieces of squash to one side for later). Process until mostly broken down.
  9. Add the spinach along with a tbsp of water to a pan on a medium heat. Cook for a few minutes until wilted, then drain any excess water from the spinach.
  10. Before assembling the wellington make sure the mushroom mixture has mostly cooled.
  11. To assemble the wellington, roll out the first roll of pastry onto a large baking tray. Spoon 2/3rds of the mushroom mixture down the middle of the pastry, around 3 inches wide, leaving a couple of inches clear at the top and bottom.
  12. Pop the wilted spinach over the mushroom mixture and place the long roasted pieces of butternut squash on top. Spread the remaining mushroom mixture over and around the butternut squash, filling in any gaps.
  13. Roll out the second sheet of pastry and place it over the wellington.
  14. Press down with your fingers to seal the two sheets of pastry together. Trim the excess pastry with a knife and use a fork to crimp the edges (you can use the excess pastry to decorate the wellington and store the excess for a couple of days in an air-tight container to use in another recipe). Then make three cuts to the top of the wellington to allow the moisture to escape.
  15. Brush the wellington with plant-based milk and bake for 35-45 minutes at the same temperate (200°C / 390°F) or until the pastry is golden brown.
  16. Serve with your favourite sides and a good helping of gravy! Happy Crimbo!

Catalan style Wellington steak, step by step recipe with photo

STEP-BY-STEP COOKING RECIPE

Step 2

Soak dry mushrooms in advance for the sauce.Blot fresh mushrooms with damp paper towels and cut off the stems. Chop the mushrooms. Melt the butter in a large skillet. Add shallots and onions and cook, covered, on low heat, until lightly browned (about 25 minutes). Put chopped fresh mushrooms, soaked dry mushrooms in a pan, cook over high heat for about 5-7 minutes, until they let the juice flow.
Next add thyme, salt, and black pepper. Reduce heat and cook, stirring occasionally, until mixture thickens (about 30 minutes).

Step 3

Remove the films from the beef tenderloin. Cut off the sharp ends of the tenderloin and season with salt and pepper the rest of the meat.

Step 4

Fry the tenderloin until brown in a skillet with olive oil.Allow a piece of meat fried, but raw inside, to cool, brush with mustard with a wide brush and set aside.

Step 5

Cut the onion into small cubes and simmer in olive oil. Add the mushrooms, also finely chopped, with a sprig of thyme, and simmer.Pour in the cream and let the whole mixture boil.

Step 6

Roll out a sheet of dough on a floured surface and cut it into 8 servings (2 per person) using a 6 cm round dough pan. Use a fork to pierce the dough in several places and brush the dough with a beaten egg.

Step 7

Cut duck liver strips into 90 g each.

Step 8

Preheat oven to 200 ºC and place all 8 pieces of dough in it for 20 minutes. Also put the meat in the oven 16 minutes for medium roasting or 20 minutes for well dan.

Step 9

While the meat is cooking in the oven, grill the liver slices for 2 minutes on each side in a hot dry skillet and set aside on paper towels to absorb excess fat.

Step 10

Cut the tenderloin into 8 equal pieces, 2 per serving. Place a piece of dough on a plate, on which sprinkle a little duxelle sauce with two spoons. Place the beef, duck liver on top, and top with a second piece of dough.

90,000 London City Guide – The best places to stay, eat, drink and shop in London

Getty ImagesIR_Stone

While London may be known today for new restaurants, trendy shops and modern galleries, some of the city’s oldest and most traditional sites are well worth a visit. From a restaurant so authentic that it served as a film set for Downton Abbey, to a hotel where Claude Monet painted his famous scenes from the River Thames, to a martini bar so good that it inspired Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond, these are some classics. places in London you won’t want to miss.

Where to stay

Savoy

Savoy

It is no more classic than the oldest luxury hotel in London.First opened in 1889, the building still retains much of its late 19th- 90th-113th-90th-114th charm (the interior of one of the elevators still looks exactly as it did when it was first installed over 100 years ago), and guests can stay in rooms decorated in Edwardian or Art Deco style. Claude Monet painted views of the Thames from his room in the Savoy, and Coco Chanel and Ernest Hemingway were also frequent guests at the hotel.

Where to eat

The Simpsons-in-Strand

rules

Founded in 1798, Rules is the oldest restaurant in London still in its original location. The menu is filled with traditional British dishes including game, roasts from the restaurant’s own farm, pies and puddings.

34 May fair

34 is a classic Mayfair steakhouse, and while it hasn’t been around as long as some of the other restaurants on this list, it has quickly become a staple of the city.

The Simpsons-in-Strand

Joining The Simpsons is like going back in time – waiters are still circling silver carts of roast beef and lamb, and Beef Wellington, Winston Churchill’s favorite at the restaurant, still features prominently on the menu … The center of the Abbey was even filmed in a wood-paneled dining room because it looks exactly the same as it did over a century ago

Wolseley

Wolesley only opened a decade ago but quickly became a London product. Inspired by European cafes, its menu is filled with English, French and Austrian classics, as well as salads and sandwiches perfect for a light lunch.

Where to drink

Beaufort Bar

Bar Beaufort

The Beaufort Bar, tucked away at the back of The Savoy, is painted black with hints of gold.Musicians play the piano every evening, and the cocktail list includes drinks inspired by some of the hotel’s most famous guests.

Ship Tavern

Founded in 1549 (although it was moved to its current location in the 1920s), this is a classic wood-paneled pub located just a short walk from Covent Garden. The upstairs dining room serves classic dishes.

Dukes

The bar, known for its martinis, takes the art of making them very seriously. The bartender brings the trolley to your table, where he fills the frosted glass with gin or vodka of your choice and tops the drink with a lemon flavor sourced from Italy.

Club Brand

If you can find a friend who is a member (it will be difficult because only 1000 people got access to this exclusive club), there is no better place to drink in London. The legendary club is quiet and calm, and past patrons have included the Queen Mother, David Cameron and Victoria Beckham.

Grenadier

It doesn’t get any more classic than the Grenadier, which is located on a tiny street in Belgravia. Despite being visited by celebrities and royalty, the interior doesn’t look like it has changed over decades … or even centuries. Get a pint or pie.

Where to buy

Liberty London

James Smith and the Umbrella’s Dream

James Smith & Son has been selling umbrellas since 1830.Their versions are expensive but well worth it. The handles are crafted from precious woods and decorated with chic tassels, and many umbrellas have a lifetime warranty if they break.

Fortnum and Mason

The store gets its fair share of tourists, but there is no better place to stock up on British classics like tea, jam and biscuits. If you have a particularly large suitcase, be sure to grab one of their famous picnic baskets.

Hancocks

One of London’s oldest jewelers, Hancox sells a collection of antiques from past centuries from designers such as Cartier, Paul Flato and legendary British jeweler Andrew Grima. In addition, its location in Burlington Arcade brings shopping closer.

Liberty London

This department store, housed in a Tudor-style building, sells much more than its famous floral prints. Its floors are now filled with new pieces from contemporary designers, timeless classics and interesting sayings.

Selfridges

It may be huge and imposing compared to the quirky layout of Liberty London, but a trip to Selfridges is still worth exploring the store’s unparalleled selection of clothing and accessories.

Filet Mignon recipe by Gordon Ramsay

If you want to test the skill of the chef – ask him to cook filet mignon. It is by this dish that one can judge the level of qualification of the culinary specialist, since a simple cut at first glance requires vigilant attention when cooking. Gordon Ramsay’s Filet Mignon Recipe is the perfect steak to serve even to royalty.

How to cook filet mignon recipe by Gordon Ramsay

The most valuable meat in the whole beef carcass, the muscles of which are not used during the life of the animal, is beef tenderloin, from which filet mignon is obtained. This tender and juicy cut is obtained from a thin portion of the tenderloin with little or no fat. A gourmet and expensive filet mignon steak should be roasted to Medium Rare to avoid overdrying the meat. To do this, it is enough to cook it for 2-3 minutes on a hot surface. In this case, the temperature inside the cut should be 53-54 ° C.
How to cook filet mignon? To do this, you can use a grill, grill pan, oven, or regular skillet. This tender steak does not require pre-marinating, the main nuance here is proper roasting. The cooking technology does not differ from other classic cuts: first, the meat should warm up to room temperature and “breathe” a little, a slightly weathered crust will contribute to caramelization. Then the steak is dried, seasoned with spices and cooked in the chosen way, after which it must be given time to “rest”. This is necessary in order for the meat to “reach” the required 1-2 ° C for proper roasting, and the juices are evenly distributed throughout the piece. During heat treatment, all the liquid in the cut accumulates in the center, where the temperature is coldest, and in order for the steak to become juicy throughout the entire area, you need to give it time to “rest”.If you want to make a real royal dinner, be sure to buy a filet mignon. It’s easy to buy meat for a steak, just place an order on the T-Bone website.

Filet Mignon Recipe by Gordon Ramsay

Gordon Ramsay is a world famous Scottish chef who has been awarded three Michelin stars. The recipes for his dishes are absolutely accessible and easy to reproduce in your home kitchen. Filet mignon recipe by Gordon Ramsay, cannot be called a classic way of cooking, this dish is more reminiscent of Beef Wellington in a mini-version.To make Ramsay’s Filet Mignon Recipe , the first step is to remove the meat from the packaging. It should lie on the kitchen table for about 1-2 hours so that the temperature rises to room temperature and a slight weathered crust appears. Then blot the cut with paper towels. If this is not done, droplets of moisture on the meat will begin to actively evaporate, in contact with the hot surface, and will transfer the frying process to a banal stewing.
Sprinkle the fillet mignon with salt and ground pepper mixture and place in a hot skillet with olive oil.Fry until color changes for 30-50 seconds on each side. Use cooking tongs to turn over to avoid pinching the meat and leaking juice. The meat should just be crusty and completely moist on the inside. Spread mustard over the hot filet mignon and set aside to cool. Peel and grind the champignons in a blender, add salt, garlic passed through a press, ground pepper and fry in a dry hot frying pan. Cook the mushrooms for 10-12 minutes, until the moisture has completely evaporated, add thyme halfway through the process.Place several layers of Parma ham on plastic wrap, spread the mushroom mixture on top and place the filet mignon. Wrap in a tight roll avoiding air bubbles and refrigerate for 20-40 minutes. After that, free the roll from the cling film and wrap it in puff pastry, smearing the edges with yolks. Bake in the oven at 200 ° C for about 15 minutes, then let the meat rest and serve in slices. Filet Mignon, a recipe by Gordon Ramsay, is a truly royal dish that will brighten up your special evening.Bon Appetit!
