Chino vs Khaki, do you know the difference?

Chinos or khakis?

We’ve all heard both terms—“khakis” and “chinos”—used interchangeably to describe the same pants and both look great with the right belt. But there are actually distinct characteristics that make each pant a style of its own—even if the differences are subtle. This of course made us wonder, do most folks know the difference between chino pants and khaki pants? And does it matter? Let’s see.

What Makes Chinos Different than Khakis?

With a more recent military uniform heritage, chino pants earned a more formal style than khakis. One of the distinct differences between the two, and an easy trick to use when shopping or pairing an outfit, is the stitching. Stitching on khakis is visible, whereas it is concealed on chinos. This gives chino pants a more finished look, which in turn makes them a little more “dressy.”

The second, less obvious and less reliable rule of thumb for telling the difference between the two, is the weight of the fabric. Chino pants are often made of a lightweight 100% cotton or cotton-blend fabric in a tighter weave, while khakis are often constructed of a heavyweight 100% cotton twill fabric. You probably wouldn’t wear your chinos to do yard work, whereas you might your khakis.

Third, chino pants are often cut slimmer with a closer fit than khakis, adding to their formal appeal. The fuller cut of khakis arguably makes them more comfortable and versatile.

Should I Choose Khakis or Chinos?

It depends. Beyond the basic differences between chinos and khakis there are a few other distinguishing traits that may help you decide which type of pants to choose for specific venues or occasions.

  1. Chinos come in a wider range of colors than khakis. Traditionally available only in a lighter shade of tan than khakis—closer to a cream color—these days chinos come in a variety of colors. This variety gives you more seasonal styling options.
  2. Khaki style pants have pronounced pockets; chino pockets are hidden. Concealed pockets add to the dressier demeanor of chinos, but both styles can be found in wrinkle-free designs.
  3. Chinos have flat fronts; khakis can be flat or pleated. This is purely a matter of personal preference, but in general, a pleated pant is more traditional. Pleats also help balance your proportions if you carry extra weight in your mid section, or if you are broad-shouldered. A flat front is a more modern pant silhouette that tends to flatter a slimmer body type.
  4. Both styles can be dressed up with a nice shirt and blazer. Both khakis and chinos are a better choice than jeans for dressier occasions and are both considered “business casual”. These days, many people wear either style to work.

A Brief History of Khakis and Chinos

Khakis were originally adopted as the military uniform of British officers in northern Colonial India in the mid-19th century. The word itself—khaki—comes from the Persian word for dust, used to describe the uniform’s drab color. Worn by various swashbuckling characters in famous Hollywood adventure movies, including the likes of Indiana Jones, khaki clothing has been memorialized through history and in popular culture.

Chinos originated in the military as well, during the Spanish-American war in the Philippines. The lightweight cotton twill uniforms produced in China were modeled after the earlier uniforms described above. And, as one might guess, the name chino comes from Spanish slang for “China.” But in an effort to conserve cloth, the pants were designed with tapered legs, and without pleats or pockets. The result was a more streamlined fit which has endured over time.

Fast forward to the present and it’s clear both styles of pants have been adopted as a sort of civilian uniform by the masses, a natty alternative to jeans. The bottom line is, whatever you want to call them or however you prefer to describe them, neither khaki pants nor chinos will ever go out of style.

Now that you know the differences, what do you prefer—chinos or khakis?

Chino – Catwalk Yourself

Chino fabric is a sturdy, twill weave fabric. It is generally made form cotton or cotton blends and dyed khaki or tan colours. Chino fabric can be recognised by the subtle sheen it has. It is very hard-wearing and was traditionally used for military uniforms or work wear. It is now more commonly used for casual civilian clothing and sportswear, and can be dyed a multitude of colour to serve this purpose. The term ‘Chinos’ can also be used to describe a pair of trousers made from Chino fabric; which have become increasingly popular in casual fashion recently.

How is cotton made?

Cotton is a natural cellulose fibre from the seed boll of the cotton plant. The majority of cultivated cotton is grown in America, China and India, where the conditions are dry and warm. Once the cotton boll is ready it is picked, the seeds are removed and the soft white fibres are removed in a process called ginning. These are what make the cotton fabric; and when harvested they have to be untangled from each other and aligned as they are very fine and fluffy. This process is called combing or carding. At the spinning mill next, the cotton fibres are spun and twisted into cotton yarn which it then woven or knitted into a multitude of cotton fabrics.

Y by Yeossal – Everyday Cotton Chinos (Made to Order)

I went against better judgment and ordered four pairs of these trousers in one order. I will shortly discuss them in the following review. TL;DR Buy them now, They are worth it. FIT: I can use the side adjusters to cinch up the waist and walk out the door. I did order my own inseam, which was also advised against, and they are mostly good in that regard as well. The length hits at the top of the shoe, with an ever so slight forward break. The width around the thigh and calf is also good. I ordered my trousers in a thirty-two inch waist with the rest of the measurements cut for a thirty-one inch body. They are trim fitting without being baggy, nor tight. I would say, “just”. I also requested they have a higher rise than their normal fit and this was also done to all four pairs. I will also mention that my cream pair are cut a bit baggier than the others, with the length being a touch longer, thus giving a definite forward break on the shoe. This was not requested, but I do not mind it. COLOR: My favorite of the colors which I selected is dark brown. It is quite a rich brown, without looking black or too milky. I would say it is a true dark brown. The forest green, then cream and lastly grey, would be the order of my next favorites. The cream color is more of a British khaki, think less white and more tan. Admittedly, this is more of personal opinion and your preference may vary. CLOTH: The forest green, grey, and dark brown are all of the same material. As described on the website, it has a dry hand, that retains a nice shape when ironed. The cream pair is a different material. It is not the same. Despite the description being the same, it is a kind of light moleskin material. It has a fuzzy hand and definitely more of an autumnal feeling than the summery feeling of the others. All pairs wrinkle on par with other cotton trousers I have owned in the past. DETAILS & FINISHING: The metal side adjusters and zipper fly may be my favorite part of the trousers. They are top notch and feel good when in use. The dark brown pair features different hardware than the others, and I actually prefer it. The side adjusters feature a center point which makes them much easier to actuate. The finishing is good. I did not notice any loose threads or wonky stitching. I will point out that there were no extra buttons provided, something I wish Yeossal could do in future orders. SERVICE: This is wear Yeossal really shines. Their service is great. I am probably more neurotic than their typical customer and messaged them through Instagram a lot. I mean a lot. I feel they provided me with great non-judgmental replies. If you choose to go with Yeossal, you will not want for customer service. I will mention here that my initial pair of dark brown trousers was made in an incorrect fabric. But Yeossal’s QC department caught it preshipping and a new pair of trousers was made up, and shipped four weeks after the initial three pairs were sent off. CONCLUSION: I think the standard bearer for the experience of a maker is whether or not you will be willing to shop with them again. I can say this with certainty, I will be a repeat customer of Yeossal. My order process was not without a hiccup, but the price and quality of the trousers represents an excellent value. The cost performance is outstanding. I do not think you can find a better made-to-measure service out there. Thank you for taking the time to read my review.

90,000 Chinos – a find of trousers in modern fashion

Originally designed for men, chinos have long taken their place in women’s wardrobe. Available in a variety of colors, lightweight chinos have become one of the most popular summer trousers that can be combined in many different ways. Find out more about these trousers!

What exactly does “Chino” mean?

Chino are light cotton trousers that are worn in most cases as loose summer trousers.In recent years, chinos have become true versatile trousers that are also suitable for fall and spring and in a narrower cut are also allowed as office wear.

The origin of the name “Chino” is rather controversial: it is often assumed that the country of China is associated with it, where this material from cotton was first made. From there he went to the Philippines, which was then a Spanish colony, and where the trousers were called “chino” (the Spanish word for “Chinese”).

Following another variation, the name comes from Latin American Spanish, where the word “chino” meant “toasted bread.” Thus, the usual color of these trousers was implied.

The history of chinos – more than just trousers?

Today it is difficult to imagine that chinos were once part of a military uniform. Their success story began in 1848 in the northwest of British India, where the British army fought a war against neighboring Afghanistan.By this time, the British still wore the classic, famous from numerous films, fiery red camisole with white trousers – and were a great target in the sandy mountains of light brown. An officer named Harry Lumsden had the idea to dress his soldiers in dusty light brown cotton clothes – a shade that would later be known worldwide as “khaki” (the word “khaki” in Hindi means nothing more than “dust” ).

Khaki uniforms and camouflage, that is, the camouflage that she proposed, soon interested the armies of other countries.During the Spanish-American War for the Philippines in 1898, American soldiers got a taste of khaki pants called chinos. However, there is no evidence that the chinos for the US Army were actually made in China.

Chinos began their journey into the world of fashion in general after World War II, when the demobilized American army was left with a large number of chinos, which the civilian population liked so much. Along with the classic khaki shade, today chinos are presented in numerous other colors and styles for men and women.

What are your typical chinos?

Classic chinos, inspired by the American army chinos, are characterized by their straight fit and the high quality cotton twill fabric from which they are made. Chinos usually have simple front and sometimes back pockets. At least in men’s fashion, chinos still have the often classic arrows on the front. Chinos should not be confused with cargo pants, which are also often available in khaki colors, but have additional patch pockets on the leg.In women’s fashion, chinos are presented today in numerous shades, and in summer fashion, delicate pastel colors are in demand above all.

Chinos – what to combine with?

The huge popularity of chinos lies in their wide variety. For the office, women can pair chinos with an elegant blouse, and men with a polo shirt or even a shirt and jacket. In their spare time, chinos are worn at ease with a comfortable T-shirt.

Available in numerous color variations, women’s chinos are ideal for “Color-Blocking” – for example, a combination of green chinos with a yellow T-shirt and a red jacket. Those who prefer a more playful look can choose, for example, chinos in a delicate shade of lavender or pink and combine them with a white top and a colored summer scarf.

The classic khaki chinos are especially versatile – a history-rich neutral shade that can be easily combined with other colors. Classic chinos are highly recommended, so you should have them in your wardrobe – find your favorite trousers at bonprix too!

Chinos Pants

Chinos trousers: what are they? In this article, we will talk about how they differ from others, how to choose the right chinos in size, and what clothes and shoes to wear with them.

Distinctive features of men’s chinos

Chino trousers are typical representatives of universal casual and even smart-casual. They are the personification of convenience, comfort and practicality.

A classic of the genre – trousers with a high or medium waist and moderately wide, slightly tapered legs. However, wide straight trousers, tapered and narrow options are also equally popular – each has its own zest.

Chinos are cotton pants.Initially, Chinese twill fabric was used for sewing chinos – a light cotton fabric of diagonal weaving. Thanks to this, the trousers were durable and not hot. Modern trends to increase the practicality, durability and elasticity of things allow the use of cotton fabrics with a small addition of synthetics.

The combination of light fabric and cut is a guarantee of convenience and comfort. The practicality of the thing is added by capacious hidden-type chamfered front pockets. The hand in them lies naturally and comfortably.There are vertical back pockets (one or two), often with a small button as a closure.

Today, chinos are available in a variety of styles and models, fastened with practical zippers (low-rise trousers, as a rule) or stylish buttons (mid-rise trousers). The range of colors in the assortment: plain options, trousers with contrasting inserts, chinos with original fashionable prints.

Who are chinos suitable for? They do not drive into frames – neither by age, nor by style, nor by complexion and features of the figure. You can always choose the best option , which will be in harmony with your lifestyle, individual preferences and requirements.

Fashionable models with a tapered silhouette suit young people, while middle-aged men can get a calm monophonic version with a classic moderately loose silhouette for their basic wardrobe.

The most suitable season for chinos is the warm season, because the trousers are lightweight. However, experiments with fabric (adding wool and synthetics to cotton) made it possible to expand the range of temperature conditions up to a thaw or the first significant frosts.

Here are the main advantages of chinos:

  1. Compatibility. Pants go well with clothes, shoes and accessories of various styles.
  2. Practical and durable. Chinos serve for a long time, without losing their neat attractive appearance, require minimal maintenance.
  3. Multifunctionality. They are appropriate not only for everyday wear, but also in the office, at events and meetings, irreplaceable in travel and long trips.
  4. Availability. High-quality branded chinos can be purchased for as little as $ 20-30, not missing out on seasonal sales in online and offline stores, and even cheaper.

Origin history chinos

The history of chino began around the middle of the 19th century, when comfortable, lightweight trousers made of twill fabric took their place in the uniforms of British colonial soldiers in the sweltering and hot India.Even then, they owed their style to traditional Indian pants. The soiled and catchy white color was changed to a kind of khaki, painting the fabric with a mixture of coffee, curry and mulberry juice.

chinos trousers owe their name to the origin of matter. At that time, it was produced only in China (in English, China is translated as China).

The end of the Second World War became the starting point of the beginning of the victorious procession of these trousers around the world. Returning home, the soldiers continued to wear comfortable and non-marking trousers in everyday life.

However, if earlier chinos could only be attributed to the style of soft, not aggressive military, then modern trousers simply cannot be recognized. The result of the versatility of the cut, combined with the imagination of the designers, can be seen today in the form of a wide range of chinos and their high popularity.

How chinos differ from slacks

The variety of styles and models of casual (informal everyday style) and smart-casual (business informal style) trousers can sometimes be confusing and misleading.

A modern man who wants to dress stylishly, fashionably, with taste, is interested in the question of what to choose – chinos or slacks? Or maybe it’s the same thing, because slacks began to gain popularity at the same time as chinos?

Left – slacks, right – chinos

Both trousers are united by the fact that they belong to casual styles, have a straight or slightly tapered silhouette, are made of fabric based on cotton or linen, do not constrain movement and require minimal maintenance.

Some models are really similar, but there are some differences:

  1. Fabric. Slacks are sewn from dense fabric (mixed gabardine), chinos – from lightweight.
  2. Texture. Slacks are spacious and resemble jeans in shape and texture of the material, chinos are a confident alternative to jeans.
  3. Compatibility. Slacks are less combinatorial and versatile than chinos – for both the choice of clothing and the choice of shoes, slacks are more demanding.
  4. Pints. Slacks are often sewn with folds on the belt (tucks), chinos – without.

The basis of the chinos fabric is cotton. This explains the lightness of the trousers, their high thermo- and steam-regulating properties, hypoallergenicity, pleasant tactile sensations.

Twill Provides diagonal mobility to the cotton fabric. Moreover, the material is completely inelastic.Tapered models are uncomfortable without the addition of synthetic fibers to cotton or linen. Comfort and freedom are the virtues of chinos, regardless of the model.

For hot weather in , it is better to give preference to natural fabrics with a minimum content of synthetics (up to 10%). On the other hand, 15-30% of synthetic fibers in combination with cotton are better able to retain heat on cold days.

It is worth remembering that synthetics do not drain sweat away from the body well, and can be dangerous for allergy sufferers and people with very sensitive skin.It is better to refuse to buy a model with a high content of synthetic additives at any time of the year.

The trousers do not hinder movement due to the peculiarities of the cut. There are three types of chino cut available:

  1. Straight – loose straight cut trousers with a medium waist, buttons are used as a fastener. Stylish, comfortable, functional. Straight chinos go well for middle-aged and older men, this model looks elegant and restrained, combined with both formal shoes and sandals or sports shoes.
  2. Slim – Tapered trousers. They have a low fit, but there are medium options. The zipper is in harmony with this cut, giving the thing more style and practicality. Tapered chinos look good with casual shoes, classic and sporty jumpers, pullovers. Slim chinos are a good option for visually correcting imperfections and emphasizing the merits of the physique and figure.
  3. Super slim – ultra slim trousers with a zipper.Today, such chinos are presented in numerous options, up to tight-fitting trousers. Upper cut is different, fit and fly are low. Super-slims especially appealed to the younger generation of experimenters.

Left to right: Mid-Rise, Straight Fit / Low Rise, Tapered / Low Rise, Ultra Slim

Left to right: Mid-Rise, Straight Fit / Low Rise, Tapered / Low Rise, Ultra Slim

The classics of the genre men’s chinos are variants made in a monochromatic pastel palette: discreet khaki, beige, sand, white, coffee with milk.The advantage here is the high degree of compatibility with different colors in other garments and accessories. This range is most in demand and does not give up its positions for at least 5-7 years.

Proven color combinations are combinations of white and black, white with all shades of brown, khaki and “sand”, sea wave and coral, graphite with gray.

If you wish, you can experiment with ultra-bright colors , combining orange, yellow or crimson electric trousers with blue cropped jackets, sweaters and blazers in rich natural shades, right up to bomber jackets.In this version, fashionable casual-pants look spectacular and piquant, harmoniously balancing several styles in one image (military, sports, casual, hip-hop, rock).

A win-win ensemble for chinos of any color is a contrasting but color-coordinated top: dark pants – light top, and vice versa.

Bold chinos with abstract prints look bold with solid, soothing colors on the rest of the outfit. The exception is accessories – belt, scarf, laces on sneakers, etc.These are bright accents that will emphasize the boldness and audacity of the image.

What to wear with chinos: we select clothes and shoes

Chinos are bright representatives of casual and smart-casual style. A high degree of compatibility, the ability to combine incongruous (and it looks fresh and unusual), convenience – all this has made chinos a favorite item in the basic wardrobe of fashionable party-goers, managers, entrepreneurs, creative personalities and all those who strive to live life to the fullest and appreciate comfort.

Chinos are one of the few types of trousers that are comfortable and allow you to wear the same comfortable clothes and shoes. Pants go well with cropped blazers of a straight and slightly fitted silhouette, T-shirts, shirts (including classic ones) outside or casually tucked in with rolled up sleeves, classic or wide silhouette polos and jumpers. The length of the chinos worn outside should not hide the line of the front pockets. If you decide to complement the trousers and the image with a belt, then the accessory should be opened.

The business-casual fashion trend is a combination of classic straight or tapered chinos with a classic shirt, a fitted jacket and a tie or bow tie. In this form, it is possible for a graduation, and for a business meeting or an official event. Classic shoes or comfortable casual loafers are suitable as footwear.

There is one important detail to keep in mind, however. The length of the legs of modern chinos slightly opens the ankle joint, and therefore it is better to wear high socks (there is no elastic band in the visibility zone) or refuse them altogether.

Pants go well with different types of shoes : sneakers, sneakers, sneakers, lace-up boots or with buckles.

How to choose the right chino by size

Chinos are difficult to choose based solely on the dimensional grid. Fitting plays an important role, because the fineness of cut and sizes vary from manufacturers.

Trousers should not cause discomfort when moving.

Leg length for chinos partially or completely opens the joint. If the pants are too long, it doesn’t matter, you can tuck the edges outward by 2-3 turns, although this is not necessary.

But if you really correspond to fashion trends, then in the turns it is worth observing a slight negligence – do not be afraid to allow asymmetry, folds. This will only add spice. In addition, by experimenting with the height of the sides of the formed cuff, you can visually correct the length and line of the leg.

Quality attributes

When choosing trousers, do not rush. It is worth paying attention to the brand name , the appearance of the product and some points.

  • Composition and origin of the fabric. A conscientious manufacturer (brand) will not allow itself to use materials with a high synthetic content. On the contrary, the bet is on naturalness. A synthetic component is added to give the fabric and the finished product additional properties that increase usability without compromising comfort and safety.
  • Smooth cut lines, ergonomics. The silhouette of good trousers resembles the lines of the body.
  • Smooth, strong seams , both on the outside and on the wrong side of the garment.
  • Trousers fixing features. Number of buttons on the belt (2-3 is ideal).
  • Labels. Design, literacy and accuracy of tags and labels.

What are chinos for men | STYLE4MAN.COM

What do men wear in summer? Someone who is not burdened with worries about the dress code – light shorts or comfortable (though not always aesthetic) “sweatshirts”. The rest are tight jeans or suit pants. Meanwhile, there is a comfortable and much more “breathable” alternative to such clothes – chinos. They can be worn anywhere; their color scheme can amaze even the most creative and uninhibited person; finally, they are cotton, and your skin will fit like family … Well, how can you ignore them when the heat comes again on the street?

What is chinos for men

What is it?

In its purest form, these are trousers made of 100% cotton, tapered at the bottom, with buttons on the fly instead of a clasp, beveled pockets in the front and straight ones, mortise pockets in the back.Although, of course, now you can find various variations of chinos: from blended fabrics, with a standard front lock, a classic or low fit.

A priori, they were male, and only in the last century did women manage to “pull” them into their wardrobe (and, by the way, quite successfully). For the first time chinos appeared in 1848 in the British troops, at that time lodging in hot India. Before that, the soldiers wore only white – but you yourself understand what happened with such trousers in the heat, and even during drill on the parade ground.So the general ordered to paint them with all the means at hand (coffee, curry and mulberry) – so he “accidentally” invented khaki, plus gave the world those chinos as they are known to this day. And, by the way, they owe their name, you guessed it, to China – it was from this country that the British military bought fabrics for their uniforms.

Fashionable colors in 2018

There are many shades of jeans in our time, and this is very often used by women walking around in red or bright green jeans. But when a man chooses denim pants, he most often stops at the classics – all shades of blue, well, at worst – black. Not so with chinos. Whichever option you choose – mustard, greenish, white, and even classic khaki – everything will be fashionable and relevant.

Still, when choosing the perfect chinos for yourself, first tell us what you will wear them with.If your style is a neutral classic, dark gray chinos are perfect for you, as well as blue ones. Pastel shades (pistachio green, pale lavender, lemon) can be easily combined with other things, so they are considered the trend of this season. For example, if worn with a dark blue blazer, a snow-white shirt, they compensate for the formality of the image. And with a simple T-shirt and linen scarf, on the contrary, they will give you a slightly bohemian look.

What are chinos for men?

In general, the most fashionable colors of men’s clothes will be: cranberry (deep red), emerald, bright orange, amber, cornflower blue, lemon, asphalt gray, beige, chocolate.If you wear trousers of one of these colors, you are guaranteed to be in trend.

But what trousers stylists would not advise men to wear, regardless of the fact that chinos of all colors of the rainbow are sold in stores – they are bright red. They are fat, and they just look crazy, even if they are stylishly cut, and you can’t find fault with the “top”, that is, a shirt with a blazer.

How and with what to wear these pants

Like the jeans we are used to, chinos are universal. For casual style, khaki pants are great, plus rough boots, a quilted vest and a chambray shirt (this material looks like rough denim, although it is, on the contrary, thinner and lighter to the touch).In this way, you can even go on a hike, even get ready for work (if there is no strict boss looking after your suit, and you can wear whatever your heart desires). And in the summer, in the heat, such a set of casual clothes is more appropriate: pastel chinos, polos or a simple T-shirt, espadrilles or sandals, and in the evening – a thin cardigan.

What are men’s chinos pants (chinos)

For smart style, it is better to combine chinos with a melange sweater and luxury sneakers (these are not for running, but for the office – in other words, sports shoes).Another win-win look is a sports jacket (ideally the same color as the trousers), plus monks or barefoot loafers.

To look more sophisticated (but not conservative, but at ease), that is, to go to the office, burdened with a dress code, stylists advise wearing deep navy pants, plus brown loafers and the same belt. Complement this look with a white shirt and a blue jacket (lighter than chinos). And to look brighter, do not forget about such additions as a pocket square or a contrasting silk scarf that can be draped over the sides of your jacket profitably.

In general terms, you can wear chinos as it suits you. With a white T-shirt without prints – and a dress shirt and jacket. With a dark office – and the most incredible colored belt. With sneakers, loafers, shoes, topsiders. But! It is better to refuse socks (well, or choose the lowest model you can find in the store).

Closing remarks

In fact, chinos are much more interesting trousers than denim. They’re more versatile than their always-blue cousins, and they’ll go with a lot more of your wardrobe.And no matter what you are – bold, not shying away from bright colors and unusual combinations, or restrained, preferring strict shades – such trousers will suit you in any case. You can wear them giving your look a slight sense of formality – but without the office hassle. Do not be afraid to experiment with chinos – after all, firstly, they will tolerate combination with almost any shoes and clothes, and secondly, this is how a person’s unique style is born, as well as his individuality.

Cotton fabric attracts with its softness, hygroscopicity, breathability. There is no material more versatile than cotton fabric. From natural fibers, thin and dense cuts, delicate and coarse, are obtained.Summer clothes, products for children are sewn from soft and thin fabrics. The fabric is pleasant to the body and is well tolerated by allergy sufferers. What else is made of cotton is home textiles, underwear, diapers and undershirts. The wide range of applications proves that cotton fabrics have no equal, and the raw materials themselves can be used independently and as part of other materials.

What kind of fabric

Cotton fabric appeared in India 7 millennia ago. The canvases were widely used domestically and were exported.Further, the cotton plant began to be cultivated in Asian countries. The unique material came to Russia only in the 15th century, and it was produced several centuries later.

Nowadays, cotton and linen are considered indispensable materials in the manufacture of environmentally friendly and hygienic clothing, bed linen, products for newborns. Nowadays, organic cotton has gained popularity, although not everyone understands what it is. In fact, this is a fabric made from 100% cotton without the use of chemicals, including when growing raw materials.

Cotton fabrics are compared with wood-cellulose fabrics, but one cannot say which is better – cotton or viscose, since the first is natural, and the second is of artificial, although not synthetic origin. They also try to compare cotton or bamboo, but bamboo fibers are again cellulose, albeit not woody, as is the case with viscose.

Cotton fabrics are also called cotton. Cotton is the same cotton, but with a different name. Cotton in English is spelled cotton and also sounds in transliteration.There are no other differences between tissues.

What kind of fabric is this – cotton? In fact, this is a group of materials with cotton fiber in the composition. It can be poplin and satin, calico and chintz. Sometimes cotton is mixed with polyester, elastane and other synthetics. If the content of artificial fibers is low, then the material looks like natural and has the same properties, and synthetic components only improve its characteristics – they increase elasticity, strength, resistance to fading, etc.

Cotton fiber is the main one in the fabric. But at the same time, the canvases are different, which is explained by the peculiarities of processing, the thickness of the threads, the way of weaving. Short-fiber varieties of cotton are used for the production of high-density fabrics – flannel, bikes. From the fibers, which differ in enviable length and small thickness, delicate and delicate fabrics come out – cambric, marquise. Cotton thread obtained from medium-fiber raw materials is suitable for the production of calico, calico, satin.

100% cotton goes to bed linen, handkerchiefs. Elastane can be added to the cotton fabric to improve springiness. The elastic material is suitable for sportswear, T-shirts, underwear. If the content of synthetics in the composition of the fabric reaches 50% or more, then the advantages of the natural material are difficult to detect, and the care of the product is carried out as for ordinary synthetics.

The ignition of the thread will help to determine the composition of the fabric. Cotton fiber burns like paper.The synthetics melt and the blended threads form a resinous droplet upon combustion. The main suppliers of quality raw materials are India, Pakistan, Egypt, China. In these mills, fine-fiber varieties are grown. Medium staple cotton is widespread in Central Asia.

Types and their properties

By type, 100% cotton fabric is divided into budget and luxury, which is determined by the quality of raw materials. Egyptian cotton is especially prized. Long-fiber raw materials are obtained from it without lint – fluff.The material is used when sewing elite bed linen and premium clothing. Indian and Chinese cotton is no less valuable. Here varieties are grown that are suitable for the manufacture of thin and light fabrics.

American cotton is also distinguished by excellent quality and variety of varieties. The country is one of the three leaders in the world market and produces natural cotton with a silky texture. Cotton fabrics from Brazil, Pakistan and Turkey are valued a little less.Korean cotton is especially popular with needlewomen.

Uzbek and Russian cotton is notable for its low price, but it is coarse and inferior in design to Turkish. Japanese cotton pleases with a variety of colors, although the raw materials themselves are not grown in the Land of the Rising Sun. In Italy, high-quality and expensive canvases are made for tailoring exclusive clothing, since the country itself is famous for its iconic fashion houses.

Also, fabrics are classified according to their properties and purpose:

  • Children’s soft cotton – differs in tenderness, is produced mainly from long-fiber varieties.It has an attractive design and is often complemented with fun patterns. Material from Korea, China, India, Turkey is widespread;
  • eco cotton – aka organic cotton. The material is obtained from raw materials that have not been treated with chemicals. Eco-marked cotton fabrics require more gentle handling and softer detergents;
  • technological cotton – material without additional processing, it is also harsh. Used as a packing material and for cleaning equipment.Uzbek medium-staple or short-staple cotton is used as a raw material.

The fabric also differs in the type of weave:

  • plain – the simplest and most common. In this way, coarse calico, chintz, poplin, batiste are made. The properties of plain weave cotton enhance the main advantages of raw materials – hygroscopicity and air permeability. Plain weave printing on cotton is more expressive and colorful;
  • twill – flannel, denim, bumazeye are obtained in a similar way.These are strong and tear-resistant canvases, but quite heavy and dense. Sometimes artificial fibers, such as elastane, are added to the composition to make the fabric softer and more elastic. Dense fabrics are dyed in dark and rich colors – blue, black, gray, because they sew trousers, suits and overalls from the canvas;
  • satin – durable and beautiful fabrics with a soft glossy sheen on the front side. Satin and eraser are considered the main representatives.

Cotton is also used for filling, braid and yarn.Fluffy cotton wool used in medicine is also obtained from raw cotton.

What natural material is valued for is its hygiene. Cotton fabric is famous for its hygroscopicity, hypoallergenicity, breathability, pleasant tactile sensations. It is safe and suitable for people with skin sensitivities or dermatological conditions.

Cloths have a wide range of applications, are easily dyed and can withstand multiple washings.Cotton items are not afraid of hot water and an iron, and therefore are not capricious in their care. Baby product and bedding, kitchen towels and tablecloths can even be boiled. Although it is often not worth resorting to this method of washing, the structure of the fabric will collapse over time.

The assortment of cotton canvases is huge. It can be dense and tough fabrics like denim and thin delicate cuts like cambric and chiffon. The raw materials are also suitable for making knitting yarns and various fillers.

Among other pluses of matter:

  • does not accumulate static electricity;
  • not interested in moths and other pests;
  • affordable;
  • has a long service life.

Despite the indisputable advantages, cotton fabrics also have disadvantages. This is a tendency to crease, shrinkage and deformation. However, material shortcomings are often caused by improper care. If you spin delicate cotton fabrics in a centrifuge, use bleach and abuse hot water, the fabric will quickly become thinner.Also, cotton fabrics are unstable to ultraviolet radiation.

Scope of application

The most widespread is cotton clothing. The material is indispensable in the manufacture of women’s underwear and hosiery: tights, golfs, and cotton socks are considered one of the most popular goods. Eco-friendly baby cotton is suitable for undershirts and diapers for newborns. Cotton wool and bandages are indispensable in a home first-aid kit, and a cotton blanket or blanket will help to make the interior more comfortable.

Let’s dwell on the use of cotton:

  • women’s clothing – in the summer a cotton sundress will help out, in the off-season and in winter – jumpers and pullovers. A cotton sundress can be smart or casual, depending on the type of fabric and design of the product. Summer cotton sundresses and dresses are suitable for women of all ages and delight with comfort. The business image will be decorated with women’s blouses and sweaters made of cotton;
  • menswear – cotton jersey is suitable for healers of sporty clothing, and men’s chinos and a cotton turtleneck will become part of the casual wardrobe.Men’s jackets, trousers and sweaters have a practical design. And the most popular item in the men’s wardrobe is cotton jeans. For sports, a closed men’s tracksuit made of cotton is suitable, and you can go to the office in a poplin shirt or satin pants;
  • underwear and home clothes – bras, T-shirts, nightgowns, cotton panties are presented in a variety. Pajamas for women and men made of cotton with a nap will warm you in winter, and a thin cotton bathrobe – for women or men, will become your favorite homewear in the warm season.A terry cotton bathrobe for men or a cotton dressing gown for women are all popular cotton home items. If we talk about cotton underwear, then women appreciate elastic bras without underwire, T-shirts with thin straps. Men’s thermal underwear and 100% cotton socks remain a hot commodity;
  • home textiles – Cotton curtains and chintz curtains are on sale. Cotton carpets will decorate a child’s room, and cotton towels will come in handy in the bathroom and in the kitchen.Fluffy bathroom rugs add coziness and decorate the bathroom.

First, let’s find out how to wash cotton. The fabric is not picky to care for, withstands multiple washes and withstands high temperatures, but without observing certain rules, even a cotton thing can be ruined. One of the frequent questions of lovers of natural clothes is whether cotton shrinks when washing. Indeed, it shrinks, and significant. However, this applies to those products that have not been decated – primary wet heat treatment.With repeated washings, the risk of shrinkage is minimal, but this is provided that the correct temperature setting and detergents are selected.

To make cotton fabrics last longer, adhere to the following recommendations:

  • the first wash is carried out by hand, if the product is large, then in a delicate mode on a typewriter;
  • Thin fabrics with patterns are not recommended to be washed at high temperatures in principle;
  • cotton fabrics with synthetics cannot be washed;
  • so that eco cotton does not become coarse in the washing machine, after washing it is rinsed in salted water;
  • powder for washing is selected taking into account the density and color of the cotton product.

It is believed that cotton items can be boiled and bleached in aggressive formulations. But this applies only to thick and white fabrics, and radical washing methods cannot be abused. It is better to adhere to the recommendations on the label, since only the manufacturer will give more accurate information on the care of a particular product.

Dry the material in a flattened form, avoiding drying out. It is undesirable to hang the washed items on a radiator or in the sun. Let cotton fabrics wrinkle a lot, but they are easy to iron.They are ironed from the seamy side, and for persistent creases, steaming is used.

Cotton – what kind of fabric is this?

Cotton is natural fiber , which is obtained from the ripe fruits of a plant such as cotton.The quality of cotton depends on the length of the fiber – the longer the fiber, the better and better quality the fabric.

Properties of cotton fabric

Cotton fabric – these are short, thin, fluffy and soft fibers that are slightly twisted around their axis. This material is strong enough, has a high chemical resistance, and is capable of not being destroyed for a long time under the influence of light and water. Cotton can withstand temperatures up to 130-140 ° C, its average hygroscopicity is 18-20%.However, it has too little elastic deformation, which makes cotton highly crumpled. At the same time, it has little abrasion resistance and it dries slowly .

Positive qualities of cotton fabric:

  • Soft and lightweight;
  • Breathable, i.e. can be worn in the hot season;
  • Easy to paint.

Negative qualities:

  • Easy and strong creases;
  • May deform, “shrink”;
  • Able to take on a yellowish tint in the light.

Areas of application of cotton fabric are wide. It is used for sewing underwear, bed linen and table linen. It is also used for sewing skirts, robes, sundresses and dresses, trousers, shirts, suits and blouses, coats, raincoats, sports and special clothing.

This material is used as upholstery for furniture, as well as for sewing curtains. A stiffer cotton fabric is used for collars in men’s shirts.

Cotton History

Cotton is one of the most ancient fibers that humans began to produce. The first mentions of this material were made by the Egyptians about 12,000 years ago. The oldest cotton items found were produced over 5000 years ago.

Cotton for production purposes began to be grown for the first time in India, which is considered the birthplace of cotton fabric. In ancient Indian scriptures, it was said that cotton fibers are used for pillows of the Gods, on which sleep helps to find peace and tranquility.

Cotton appeared in Europe only in 350 BC. It was brought to Greece from Asia Minor. Then the process of growing this plant was studied in North Africa, Spain and Italy.

The first mentions of cotton material in Russian literature date back to the second half of the 15th century. But until the beginning of the 19th century, the production of such fabric was small and concentrated in several places.

Manufacturing in many countries was initially very complex and carried out by hand.Over time, special machines for processing cotton and making fibers were invented, which made it possible to significantly increase production volumes.

Despite the fact that the history of processing and using cotton goes back many centuries, this material began to play a significant role in the textile industry only in the 19th century.

Production technology

Cotton is obtained from the seed capsule – the fruit of cotton.The entire production process consists of several stages.

  1. After the cotton fruit is ripe, the boll opens and is picked by hand workers or industrial cotton pickers. The harvested fibers with seeds are called raw cotton.
  2. The harvested raw cotton is transported to the cotton collection point. Here it is weighed and stored.
  3. Then the raw material is sent to the ginnery. On it, on special machines called linters, gins, etc.separating the fibers from the seeds and sorted by length.
  4. Cotton fibers are pressed into snow-white bales and sent to the finished product warehouse. From such bales, continuous fibers are made – threads (yarn). In weaving, yarn is made into a fabric by weaving threads, and a finished product is made of fabric.

From plant to finished product – the complete cotton production process

The fabric can be made either from pure cotton or using impurities that can change its properties.Flax, acetate, rayon, polyester and other fibers can be added to it. Synthetic yarns are added to increase strength, give a colorful appearance, make it less wrinkled . The weave of cotton fabric can be different: plain, satin, twill, finely patterned.

Cotton garment care

Care of such material depends on the type of processing. It is recommended to wash white and colored monochromatic cotton products at a temperature not exceeding 95 ° C, colored – at 60 ° C, thin colored laundry – at 40 ° C. Machine washable.

For white cotton, you can use any detergent, for colored cotton – substances without bleaches or for delicate washing.

Tumble dryer may only be used if indicated on the packaging.
