Musky Fishing on a Budget

Simply put, musky fishing is too damn expensive!

I can’t imagine the state of shock that new musky anglers experience when first exposed to the extreme prices of rods, reels and tackle. When your average bass lure costs about as much as a cup of coffee, the price tag on most musky lures has got to be hard pill to swallow. Not knowing where to turn, confused novice anglers continually seek out advice from guides, magazines and other fishing professionals to answer questions such as, “what do I need to get started?”

While there are the some obvious places to turn for information, often it’s like leading a lamb to slaughter. The world of “Musky Fishing” that you know from television, magazines, and social media is a machine, constantly fueled by hype, pseudo-celebrity, and dollar signs.

The opinions given by many “Pros” are dictated solely by which lure or rod company is currently shelling out free gear. These sponsorships are often short lived love affairs; you can bet once the freebies stop rolling in, all the “must have” testimonials and gushing Facebook posts will also cease to exist. Not surprisingly, the catch rate on these “amazing lures” also drops dramatically when they aren’t free.

A rare photo captured at the exact moment an endorsement deal was made.

So in an effort to skip the sales pitch, let’s look at some budget-friendly rods, reels, release tools, and a selection of musky lures that will get you fishing, but won’t break the bank. All the items on this list I have personally used, tested, and paid for out of my own pocket.

*Disclaimer: There are definitely benefits to using some of the higher-end musky gear. I am guilty of throwing some $100 plus lures and using pricey rods, but the purpose of this article is to shine some light on budget friendly options available to new and novice musky anglers.*

What is considered “affordable” varies from person to person, so I have tried to include multiple options where available and by no means is this the definitive list of affordable musky fishing tackle, but it’s not a bad place to start.

Budget Muskie Rods

When it comes to muskie fishing, choosing a quality rod is one of the most critical components of your set-up. Remember, the rod fights the fish, the reel just picks up the slack. If your on a tight budget, this is where you should spend the majority of it. You don’t need a suitcase full of lures to target muskies, but you definitely need a rod that can handle some abuse.

Tooth Tamer Muskie Rods $150-$220

Tooth Tamer offers a variety of rods with multiple length and power options. These rods have a build quality that out-performs rods costing hundreds more. Tooth Tamer rods have the feel and sensitivity of a custom rod without the boutique price tag. If you are limited to purchasing one rod “to do it all”, I would recommend the 7’6″ Heavy Fast.

Shimano Compre Musky Rod $99.99

The Shimano Compre series of musky rods are also a great choice for the budget minded angler.

The Compre rods share a lot of the same features as higher-end rods, as well as, feeling well-built and durable. This series of rods are not overly sensitive or responsive, but if your burning bucktails and chucking big rubber baits that won’t make or break you. The model I purchased held up well and is still in use, but the reel seat did need repair after a single season. The Shimano Compre may not last a lifetime, but it will definitely get you on the water.

If spending a hundred dollars or more on a rod just isn’t an option for you, the isle of your local Wal-Mart might have you covered.

Ugly Stik GX2 6’6″ $39.99

It’s not a Cadillac but the Ugly Stik GX2 will get it done. With a price tag of $39.99, it’s the least expensive rod I could find that has the backbone and durability to handle muskie fishing. Most modern musky anglers can’t imagine using a 6’6″ rod, but years ago these where the standard. I was easily able to land a 48″ musky on the GX2, and it was no worse for wear, showing no signs of stress or damage. For the bargain price tag, it performed exceptionally well. If your just getting started or are on a college-kid budget this might be the only option for you.

*Pro Tip: After my little Wally World rod experiment, I started using this as a trolling rod, and it has handled the rigors of trolling large lures surprisingly well.

Budget Musky Reels

What makes a musky reel different than the average reel collecting dust in your garage? Well, these reels are specifically built to endure the strain of large fish. The gear ratio, drag system, and spooling mechanics are designed for playing heavy fish on heavy line in all conditions. The following reels are some budget models that will help you do just that.

Abu Garcia 5500 / 6500 $89 – $99

If the Winchester Model 1873 is the gun that won the west, then the Abu Garica is the reel that conquered the north. I started using a left handed Abu Garcia round reel in 1988 and haven’t stopped yet. It isn’t sexy or sleek, but this reel is a work horse. Abu Garcia 5500 / 6500’s were the industry standard for many years. This wide availability means replacement parts are cheap and many modifications are available to super charge their performance.

These reels are battle tested and have proven their effectiveness for decades. Paired with a great rod, Abu’s are unstoppable, musky-busting reels that will last for years.

Bass Pro Shops MegaCast Metal Round Baitcasting Reel $39.99

Bass Pro Mega Cast Budget Reel

The Bass Pro Megacast is a budget friendly round reel that is capable of handling some toothy critters. This reel is on par with other Chinese import reels on the market and has 8.8 lbs of drag. This is a little on the low side, but it does have a built in bait clicker for trolling or sucker fishing. The overall construction is reflective of it’s price tag, but it is sturdy enough to get you going. If your on a Ramen Noodle budget this a viable option to start putting muskies in your net.

Musky Net & Landing Tools

You can’t land a musky without the proper tools, and these tools require shelling out your hard earned cash. To keep you from breaking the bank, these are some effective tools at a reasonable price.

The Frabill Pro-Formance Net measurements are 29″ x 34″ with a 48″ sliding handle. This net is durable and was the largest net available from local big box retailers in Tennessee. The dimensions of this net are large enough to be forgiving on average-size muskies, but was a challenge to fit larger fish. But with a price tag under fifty dollars, it is a top consideration for budget minded anglers. This net seemed to be the only viable budget friendly option that was available.

Landing tools $1-$5

I always try to buy USA made goods, but when it comes to long nose pliers and other tools used to properly release a musky, it’s hard to beat the prices from Harbor Freight. Many online musky retailers offer imported “musky tools” with their brands slapped on the handle and packaging to up the price. Harbor Freight offers 11 inch long nose pliers, bolt cutters, and other hand tools ranging in price from one to five dollars.

A basic musky release tool tool kit should at least include: long nose pliers and bolt/hook cutters. I recommend also having jaw spreaders, release gloves, and vise grips. Everyone has their own method of hook removal, but please focus on minimizing stress and physical damage to muskies. More often than not cutting the hook and then pulling it through is the best option.

Budget Minded Musky Lures

The lures included in this section are far from a comprehensive list, but are more a collection of lures that are durable and proven producers for anglers on a budget.

Joe Bucher Outdoors

700 Series Buchertail $16.99

Joe Bucher invented modern musky fishing full stop period. The Buchertail is a “bread and butter” lure; no matter the season or location, they put muskies in the net. While lesser known manufactures demand higher prices for their musky bucktails, Bucher continues to maintain affordable prices for his great quality lures.

The jointed Shallow raider also from Joe Bucher Outdoors is a great first musky crankbait.

It casts like a bullet even in heavy winds, and it’s solid plastic construction makes it a far more durable option for the budget conscientious angler.

Drifter Tackle

Hell Hound $20

The Hellhound is an easy to use glide bait for beginners and pros alike. These musky killers can purchased for just around twenty dollars.

Poe’s Giant Jackpot $15.99

The Poe’s Giant Jackpot is an easy to use top water lure that should be in every musky fisherman’s arsenal. The Jackpot is one of those lures that needs a little tweaking before throwing it, feel free to message me [email protected] for a complete guide on how to modify this lure. The Poe’s Giant Jackpot is a lure that could have made this list.. http://www.tennesseemuskyfishing.com/blog/top-ten-musky-lures-2019

Strike King KVD Magnum Squarebill $12.99

At $12.99 the KVD square bill is tough to beat. This is one of those little lures that is phenomenal at targeting southern musky on Melton Hill and is the perfect option when muskies want something a little smaller. The construction and hardware are solid and can handle all the abuse that fifty inch, post-spawn Tennessee muskies can dish out.

Savage Gear Alien Eel $10.99

It’s undeniable that muskies love big rubber baits. They always seem to crush these oversized hunks of jelly. But if your luck is anything like mine, they rip off the tail or damage the body. Most times you’re lucky to get more than a couple of fish per bait before they go in the trash can. Needless to say, the disposable nature of these lures makes dropping a ton of cash on them a losing proposition. At $10.99 the Savage Gear Alien Eel is a little easier on the pocket book and has been very popular with Tennessee Muskies. The Alien Eel performs as well as, if not better than Bull Dawgs, but has a unique feature of a hook clip to hold the front hook against the body, which translates to a higher hooking ratio.

Regardless of what tackle you choose to use remember that musky fishing is for everyone, and it isn’t just a rich mans game. This sport has a history of elitism and overly inflated egos, but don’t pay any attention to the “Musky Guys” and get out on the water.

I’ve never seen a musky turn down a lure because it was inexpensive….

Big Tackle for Musky Fishing

What’s the last thing you’d want to happen when a big fish is hooked? Tackle failure! Musky lures aren’t cheap to say the least, so the last thing an angler would want to happen is to loose that 50 dollar lure (or 20 dollar) due to tackle failure. Let’s discuss four things that can help you avoid losing lures and loosing that fish of a lifetime.

Fishing Line

Your line is critical. Most musky anglers today use braided line when tossing lures that weigh several ounces. A good, no stretch braided line is by far the best choice. Line strength depends on what rod and reel combo you use. With baitcasters, I recommend at least 65 lb test, but I prefer 80 lb test. For spinning reels, I’d go with no more than 30 lb test. Spinning rod/reel combos are best suited for smaller lures. A good smooth drag is important when fighting a big musky on spinning equipment. If your reel is rated for up to 12lb mono line, use braided line that is the same diameter as the mono line.

Leaders

Leaders are super important! You can buy the best or go to the catfish section of Walmart and buy the cheap stuff. Bob bought his leaders at Walmart. Bob hooked a big musky and lost it and his lure after the leader broke. DONT BE LIKE BOB! I was Bob early in my musky fishing days. It don’t take loosing too many 20 dollars lures or big fish to weak leaders to wise up and spend the extra dollars on good leaders. You can buy steel, titanium or fluorocarbon leaders at any on line muskies shop. The highest priced leaders will cost close to ten bucks each. Leader snaps need to be flexible, but strong. Be sure to check your snaps on a regular basis. Big snap ends will not work on some small musky lures or will effect the action in a negative way. Have an assortment of leaders and don’t go cheap. When the leader needs to be replaced, do it.

Fishing Hooks

Hooks are the last connection between you and a big fish. Most big hooks (for any big fish) are built to not bend or break. But the power of big musky fish can sometimes bend even strong hooks. Usually, the fish will get tangled on limbs and rocks, causing a hook to bend.

Sharpening Hooks

The last point I’ll mention is the “point” of the hook. Some hooks come needle sharp right out of the box. Other big treble hooks need sharpening but don’t overdo it. I’ll explain. On open water that is free from wood and rocks you want the best, sharpest hook you can get. On the other hand, if you are constantly bumping structure such as rock or wood keep this in mind. Some big hooks will “burr” very easily. If the point of your hook is too sharp, be aware that contact with structure will blunt the tip. I usually file my hooks three swipes on each side of the hook and two swipes on the top of the hook. That’s enough to put a good, sharp edge on big hooks. Practice on old hooks until you get the hang of it. Remember that a good hook set is key.

Knots

The last important thing to mention is the knot. The internet is full of information on fishing knots. I primarily use two knots that are the strongest I know of. The double improved clinch knot, and the polymer knot. Tie these knots properly and you are in business. Check your knot and line regularly, especially if you fish wood, rock, bridges, ect.

If you have good strong line, strong leaders, sharp hooks and can tie a good knot, you have all the nuts and bolts for a battle you can win! Let’s face it. When it comes to musky fishing, you need to have your ducks(nuts & bolts) in a row!

10 Best Muskie Lures In 2021 🥇 | Tested and Reviewed by Fishing Enthusiasts

How To Choose A Muskie Lure – Buying Guide

Size

The size of your bait is very important in determining the size of the catch that you are going to make. It’s a simple rule that the bigger lure you have, the bigger the fish you can catch with it. For muskie they can strike at bait which is anywhere from 4-12 inches long but around 8 inches is going to be the ideal size for a great catch.

Depth

It’s always important to know the depth that you should be fishing in so your lure is able to be in the spot where the muskie is most likely to be. This mostly depends on the seasons as in warmer weather muskie tend to dive a little bit deeper in the summer but when the colder weather comes, they start to get a little closer to the surface, which is important to bear in mind.

Weed Guard

If you are going to be fishing in a weeded area then you might have a nightmare if you constantly have to deal with a lure which is getting tangled up in weeds. Having a weed guard will help to guard against this if you are using topwater muskie lures or anything which might be closer to the surface. It will make your fishing experience a lot more enjoyable.

Water Temperature

As we mentioned before, the temperature of the water can affect the depth that the fish will be swimming in but it will also change how they behave too. Fish are more lethargic in colder waters so therefore they need a slower presentation and a slower retrieval. Warmer water makes them a lot more active and that’s where fast retrieving baits can be perfect.

Color

It’s always a good idea to be able to experiment with different colors to see which one is going to be able to work the best for you but there are some general rules that can apply. In murkier waters it’s a good idea to use very bright and fluorescent colors which are going to stand out in the water but when it’s clearer, using more natural colors can often lead to the most bites.

Design

You will be able to see all kind of designs when it comes to these muskie lures but the most important thing is that they are well-made and able to sell it to the fish that this is going to be a real meal, whether that is done by sight, sound or both. Many of the realistic swimbaits are well designed to look and swim like the real things which can make them highly effective.

FAQs

Globo Surf Overview

Muskie are a very satisfying fish to catch but can be difficult due to how aggressive they are and how big they can get. They take a lot of reeling in which makes have the best rod and reel even more important. There is no point having the best lure if you are unable to complete the catch.

As well as lures, having the best fishing line is also important in relation to the presentation to the fish and have a bad line might ruin the good work that you have done in choosing the perfect lure. Having an all-around great fishing set-up is important for all types of fishing.

With muskie it’s important to factor is the conditions that you are going to be fishing in as when it’s colder they will be slower and closer to the surface and when it’s warmer they will be deeper and more active. The size of your bait needs to match the fish you want to catch and the color and design can be important factors too. Having a weed guard is also ideal for any lures that are going to be close to the water.

When you have considered all that you will be in the perfect position to choose the perfect muskie lure for you and one which has a proven track record of success. Hopefully this guide has given you all the information that you need in order to make your muskie trip a successful one.

Tackle Crafting on a Musky Budget

In the era of economic recession, musky anglers are exposed to the cost effective strategies of building their own lures. Tackle crafting not only saves my bank account, but its creativity aspect helps me catch more muskies.

The cost of catching fish can be as affordable or expensive as the angler makes it. For muskellunge anglers, the average cost of catching a fish on the artificial lure is far from affordable. Many of today’s lures commonly run at prices between $10 to $30 dollars. At the high end I can fill my boat with gas. As online tackle shops and manufacturers have taken control of the economics within the musky fishing industry, the outlets for purchasing lure components and custom building tools are providing budget conscientious anglers with affordable and creative alternatives for catching fish.

Having started muskie fishing as a sophomore in high school, I never imagined having a collection of over 200 different baits. How I was able to afford so many $10 to $20 lures at a young age up until now is difficult to understand. In recent years, other obligations of higher priority have gotten in the way of my spending sprees for fishing tackle. These circumstances have led me to search for alternatives to save money and use my creativity to catch fish.

Presently, the musky fishing world is saturated with custom lure builders specializing in hardbait and bucktail production. These individuals build for their own personal use and sell commercially for high profits. The cost of custom made is considerably higher than the costs for mass produced lures. The theme behind custom creations is that they catch fish well. Maybe, but they catch the wallets of anglers even better.

Having walked the aisles at several musky tradeshows throughout the winter months, and making my weekly summer visits to Rollie & Helen’s Musky Shop, bucktails are without question the most popular musky lure of all time. Due to popularity, they’ve become one of the most popular lures of choice for custom builders. They are the quickest to build, the cheapest to assemble, and offer the most diversified selections in lure components and styles. As most mass produced bucktails of high quality cost more than $15, with at least half the price dedicated just to labor, building them yourself will save money. I’ve found that building these same lures myself with my own selected parts and components runs 50% or more off the cost for any mass produced lure.

For these reasons, I stumbled upon the enjoyment and creativity of custom lure building. I started this hobby during the summer of 2012, and presently build my own flashabou bucktails for personal use. This allows me to save money and catch more fish. I grew tired of spending money on products with an inflated price which only keep getting more expensive. For the average price of one mass produced lure, I can build myself two or three of the same type.

There are several benefits to building my own bucktails. The primary benefit is the creativity aspect. This enables me to test my imagination and artistic abilities with hopes it leads to more follows and put more muskies in the boat. The creativity of custom building encompasses the selection of lure style, color combinations, blade size and type, skirt material, and quality of components and terminal tackle. By custom building, I am exposed to an infinite world of custom color combinations that most manufacturers have ignored. I am also subjected to testing my own knowledge of muskies and the color spectrum, and utilizing science and past experiences in order to match the lures I build to the environments and conditions they will be fished in.

Musky bucktails are available in a variety of shapes, colors, sizes and styles. They are predominantly constructed by hand, either free-hand or with the aid of a heavy-duty fly tying vise. The tying vise is only necessary if tying your own flashabou, bucktail, or silicone skirts. However, it makes the entire construction process of the lure far quicker and easier on the hands. Tools such as needle nose and spilt ring pliers, crimpers, and wire cutters are necessary for the lure’s formation and construction. Pre-cut stainless wire between .050 and .060 diameter is the focal point of the lure as all parts and components involved in the lure are built around this frame.

My niche has become flashabou bucktails with size 7 and 8 blades in the double bladed versions because I predominantly fish lures of this type. For my lure production, components such as magnum Colorado blades in polished brass, copper or nickel and painted versions have become a favorite. So have flashabou skirts, brass and nickel beads, 3/0 to 6/0 treble hooks, 3/4 oz. bodies, and 1/2 oz. weights that allow for a weight-forward design a casting system. When selecting my components, I choose quality over quantity. By the time my lure is built, $5 to $7 was spent on its parts and assembly. The only part that didn’t cost was my time. That’s a substantial savings!

My first bucktail prototypes were put to the test during an August, 2012 trip to the Northwest Angle of Lake of the Woods, Ontario. On this first ever LOTW trip, I joined my friend Brian Malack as we fished its fertile musky populated waters for a week. The fishing for everyone in our group of ten anglers was challenging. Only five of us boated muskies. And I, the rookie who had never fished LOTW before, caught the most muskies of the group. Six of my eight fish boated came on my custom bucktail, a double-8 metallic pink Colorado bladed lure with gold flashabou skirt.

I turned to this lure after the first 8 hours of my first day of fishing was unproductive. Our morning guided trip with the legendary Doug Johnson ended prematurely within two hours due to engine failure on both his 250 Optimax and 10 horse kicker engine. That afternoon and evening as Brian and I went fishing ourselves, I couldn’t get any followers with any of the recommended lures to use. It was desperation, curiosity, and confidence in my own creation that led me to use it for the majority of this trip. Within the first few casts, a 42 incher was boated. The next day a 43″, and throughout the week four others followed suit as well. I was able to raise several high 40″ and a few 50″ fish to boatside.

A number of factors led to this custom lure success. First, that week’s pattern was quickly established as muskies were using shallow windblown reefs during the midday and afternoon hours to feed on walleyes. A gold flashabou skirt such as my lure worked to perfection in matching the hatch. Second, the popular LOTW color combination of black/nickel failed to produce. Switching over to a color combination fish likely have never seen before surely helped. As challenging of a week it was, I attribute my creativity for saving the trip. Although Lake of the Woods is loaded with muskies, I was able to replicate similar success with other various custom bucktails of the same design on the Wisconsin waters I fished for the remainder of the year. I’ve learned that creativity can work just about anywhere there’s muskies!

The availability of lure building parts and components is abundant through retailers and online distributors. Many dedicated anglers fail to realize this. Most musky lure building enthusiasts turn to Thorne Brothers and Rollie & Helen’s Musky Shop for their custom lure building needs. Both sell a diverse selection of parts, components, tools and other accessories for every project imaginable. Likewise, some anglers also turn to specialty online outlets such as Jann’s Netcraft and Hagen’s Fishing Components for their own parts and components. Finally, for those who build for both personal use and commercially, Worth Company which is based in Stevens Point, Wisconsin is a source for bulk ordering (mass orders suggested) and distributorship to factory and independent manufacturers. Many mass produced lures are made with the same exact components supplied by all of these retailers and distributors.

The cost to build your own lure depends on the price of components. A typical double bladed bucktail I build with magnum #8 blades and flashabou skirt usually runs between the range of $5 to $7. Smaller lures such as a single bladed bucktail with a fur or flashabou tail and #4 to #6 blade will obviously cost less. Meanwhile, substantially larger lures such as the popular double-ten (cowgirl style) with magnum #10 blades, tandem hooks and oversized skirt will cost substantially more due to the need for larger and more heavy-duty components.

For an overall price breakdown of a typical lure I build, the average prices from my suppliers are as follows: Two #8 magnum Colorado blades, painted or unpainted, $.50-$1.00 each; 12 to 18 inch stainless steel wire in .050-.060 diameter, $.50-$1.00 each; A handful of brass or nickel beads, $.10 each; 5/0 or 6/0 Mustad or Eagle Claw Lazer Sharp treble hook, $1.00 each; 3/4oz solid brass body and 1/2oz weight, $1.00 and .$25 each; Pre-tied flashabou skirt or self-tied flashabou skirt, $2.99 avg each. Do the math. It’s an unbelievable savings in comparison to what you can buy from the manufacturer.

For those of you who are interested in attempting to lure build in 2013, I advise you not to spend time building for the sake of learning a new hobby and having a cooler and more diversified looking tackle box with lures of overblown proportions. The objective of such DIY projects is not only to catch more muskies, but to build yourself functioning lures according to your angling style and fishing strengths. Build your lures to the best interests of muskies, your budget, and the specifications dictated by your rods and reels. As your first custom lure is assembled, have confidence that it will get bit within the first few casts. If and whenever it gets struck, nothing feels as rewarding as landing that first muskie on a new lure color it’s seldom seen before.

PA Club – Musky Fishing Tips

Tim Belcher:

“Chance favors the prepared mind” – Louis Pasteur

I was once guiding an older gentleman and we had done fairly well. People were telling him how lucky we were. I still remember these words he said to me: “Luck”, he said “is where preparation and opportunity comes together”. For all the articles you read about best times, moon phases, etc, these fish didn’t get this big eating once a month or once a week. ‘They are going to feed’ might sum it up best.

Gear:

My number one item of advice is gear. Rods from 6 to 7 feet, at least 30 lb. test and a heavy duty reel. Salt water varieties work very well. I troll will a Penn 209 on a 6 1/2 ft. cue stick with 50 pound black Musky line. Big Game line works as well. Never go below 20 lb. To avoid nicks, check that line and cut 5 to 10 feet off daily and retie. Replace annually. I use mostly bait casters for casting. Varying gear speeds ranging from 3.8 to 1, up to 7 to 1 depending on the lure and the presentation you want. If you use a swivel or a leader, this is not the place to be cheap. Use a good ball bearing with a good clasp, 6 to 12 inches long.

Presentation:

Most of the Muskellunge I have caught have been trolling, probably 70 percent. Try to troll as fast as you can, generally ranging up to 7 mph. They only exception to that is after a cold front where I like to slow troll but snap jerk the bait. I have a low speed after-market speedometer that helps; others use GPS systems. This is faster than you think and may require weights. I have sometimes used slide weights up to 4 ounces. I am still experimenting with some bottom bouncers; not recommending them yet, still tinkering with the design. I generally troll around 75 feet back. This is pretty accurate as I have a line counter I use on one of my other rods. You can take two reels and match the length let out to the one without a line counter. Either count the times your spooler goes back and forth or with the line out, take a magic marker and put about a 6 inch stripe on the line. Have also caught a few prop wash trolling, but they were both small, although we had an old-timer at the lodge for years that swore by it and he landed some dandies.

Lures:

A variety of crankbaits, double blade spinners and top water, about anything from 4 inches up to some 15 inches. For the most part, dark lures on dark days, bright lures on bright days. Minnows don’t reflect light on cloudy days. I do a lot of customization, experimentation and designing some of my own. I have been known to troll a lot of baits that were designed for casting. Still most things off the shelf work just as well. Top lures in no specific order: Suick (10 inch), Bull Dawg (6 & 9 inch), Burt’s Husky Jerk (8 inch), Mepps #5 spinners, Crocodile Spoons (5s), a number of soft plastics (large) and of course, the Super Spook (3 hook). I have been experimenting with several styles, colors and sizes of Cowgirls (#5 blades to #10s) that I designed and had made for me. No luck yet.

Conditions:

Low light always seems to be the best. This can be early morning, late evening including well after dark, (and yes I have been trolling at 2 am). My favorite is overcast and light rainy days. And yes, we did boat a 50 lb. plus at 2:00 pm on a blue bird day. Timing of the year and water temperature are major factors. Slow in spring (3 to 5 mph) into early June. From then on, speed up. Fall all the way into January, Musky really put on the feed bag. They are known to gorge themselves up through Jan. They do this by eating as much as possible and laying in the sun to speed up their metabolism… Which leads to the next subject.

Location:

The entire PA Club area is ideal. I have caught Musky from San Souci to Woods Bay. Shallow water with quick access to deep. Muskies can be caught in as little as a foot of water, particularly in the fall. Cross break points with rocks and weeds. One of the 50’s we boated came out of 8 feet or less right in the middle of an acre or so weed bed. Another, like I said, was in 50 feet, middle of a blue bird day. Two have come casting off the dock in the Pa Club marina. Some of the areas I have done well are now out of water, but this too will change. Either end of Pratt is some of the best. From the front bay (chocolate drop) all the ways to the backside tip of the Island. Try figure 8 trolling pattern around the islands all the way to the back of Wa-Wa-Nosh. And of course there is the entire Port Rawson with its many bays and access to water over 70 feet deep. We have had over 14 landed around the islands between our island and Broad Island – within sight of our island.

The above “caught” means I or someone with me actually landed a fish. Remember some guides consider a successful day just to have a follow-up to the boat.

Rick Knipe:

I spend, at times, the whole week fishing just for muskies and come home happy even when I have not caught or raised a single fish. Musky fishing is like that. On my best week of fishing I caught three muskies in one day.

I only really fish the summer pattern. I cast big plugs or 6-8 oz. jerkbaits in every area I have caught a musky, heard of a musky caught (I’m still fishing a spot Al Sweet caught a 50 inch fish I heard a story about many years ago), seen another musky fisherman fish or just plain think there should be one there. I have caught nearly all of my fish in 12-18 feet of water but always near a deep bay for them to escape to. For this reason and the time of the year I fish, July-August, I don’t fish places the springtime guys fish, like Clear Bay or Sucker Creek.

I troll when not casting. Speed is key. I like 6 ½ to 7 ½ mph. This can be a challenge to keep your lures under and not skipping out. A ¾ oz. in-line sinker, 5 feet up the line helps a lot, but you must use one additional barrel swivel to prevent line twist. I use a GPS to establish speed. I put out as much line as needed to not have lures skipping out. I use many different lures and bucktails. I like all colors as long as they are black. I like to fish rocky points with pine trees on them.

Bill Hasely:

Good News and Bad News

Musky fishing in the waters around the Pennsylvania Club is definitely a good news and bad news situation. I’ll start with the bad news: The Moon River area is not generally considered a place to catch large numbers of muskies. The action can be slow. Even serious musky anglers can go days between musky action. As an example, and though I hate to admit it, I failed to boat a musky during an entire week in June of 2010. Despite lots of exciting action, an August week in 2009 produced the same results. And anybody who has fished with me knows that these were not weeks of fishing just a couple hours between breakfast and lunch when the weather was nice. I worked hard at it and had nothing but “almosts” to show for it at the end of the week.

Now for the good news: The waters around our Club are some of the best in the world for catching a true trophy musky. Many experts list the Georgian Bay as one of the best bets for producing the next world record. As recently as 1988, Blackstone Harbor which is only about a half hour boat ride from our docks, gave up the all-time Canadian record, a “hawg” of over 65 pounds! There are muskies in our area waters that will make your knees shake. Just a few years ago I had a fish at boat-side that I feel would have challenged the Canadian, and possibly the world record. The fish swirled at and then followed a lure my eleven year old nephew was casting. It lay two feet from the side of my boat for what seemed like five minutes while my nephew frantically tried to entice it to hit. Then it turned and slowly swam away. I had caught and released a heavy, 52 inch fish of probably close to 40 pounds just the day before. This fish made that 52 look like a hammer-handle pike. My nephew was incapable of coherent speech for about an hour. I wasn’t much better.

There’s more good news. Some years back, Ontario identified the provincial waters most capable of producing world record class muskies. They then instituted very restrictive minimum size limits on those waters with the goal of producing exceptional fish. The Georgian Bay was one of those waters. The “smallest” musky that is legal to keep at the Pennsylvania Club is now 54 inches! Since that very large minimum size limit has been in effect, I have seen not only more muskies overall but more truly big muskies than ever before. I have been fishing almost exclusively for muskies at the Pennsylvania Club now for somewhere around 35 years and can honestly say that the musky fishing is as good now as I have ever seen it.

So what is the secret to catching these big girls? In a word, persistence. (Some may call it stubbornness!). To have consistent musky action you have to be willing to pay your dues. This means be willing to keep throwing that big jerkbait while your buddies are nailing the smallmouth on wacky worms. It might mean rolling out of the sack way before daylight to take advantage of a key solunar period. Or, maybe it’s just breaking out the rain gear and fishing through a day when all the sensible people in camp are inside playing cards or reading westerns. All this “dues paying” becomes worth it when you see something that looks like a small submarine flare its gills and suddenly engulf that crazy looking lure you’ve been pitching for 3 days.

The bottom line is that I don’t have a magic formula. Methods? I am primarily a caster. I will troll when the situation calls for it, but I enjoy the up close and personal action that casting can bring. That said, trolling can be a very effective method and there are some very good musky fisherman in the Club that do very well trolling. Lures? I like them all. If there were an organization called Musky Lures Anonymous, I would be a charter member. I’ve caught muskies on jerk baits, glide baits, all manner of crankbaits, in-line spinners, spinnerbaits, rubber baits, and topwaters. I’ve even had action on jigs. I tend to go mostly with natural colors in our clear water but have also caught fish on some ridiculously colored baits.

I guess if there is one characteristic that my musky lures have in common it would be size. The smallest bait in my boat is probably significantly larger than the largest lure in a bass or even a pike fisherman’s box. Sure, muskies can be and are caught on small lures. Personally though, I’ve had much more success since I started using the big stuff. Find a couple big lures you have confidence in and can use well and use them. Location? I’m not about to broadcast my favorite spots. I will tell you that in the summer and fall I tend to look for structure that is fairly close to deep water. Look for those out of the way or overlooked spots. And one more hint… those favorite smallmouth bass honey holes of yours are often good musky spots as well.

Best time to fish? A wise man once said, “whenever you can” and I agree. I fish whenever I can, though I do admit to liking some conditions better than others. I do pay attention to moon phases, but I feel local weather pattern trumps all other factors. Give me an approaching storm front after a long period of sunny weather and I’ll be a happy fisherman. Throw in a medium south or west wind and put some fall color on the leaves and you won’t be able to keep me off the water.

I guess it all sums up to be pretty simple: Find a couple big lures that you like and can work well and cast or troll the paint off them around structures that are fairly close to deep water. The first time you see 50 plus inches of gill flaring, shaking, twisting, musky come out of the water in a jump that would make a smallmouth proud, and realize that it’s attached to your line, you will be glad you did!!

One final word… Unless you honestly believe your musky is a potential record breaker, take some good measurements, a few good pictures (don’t keep her out of the water too long) and release her to fight again. The replica mounts they make today are every bit as realistic as any skin mount. And the feeling you get as you watch your trophy swim away, well, it just doesn’t get any better.

Muskie 101 – NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation

By Anthony Scimé and Scott McKee, Niagara Musky Association

Steeped in legend and lore, New York State boasts some of the most famous and productive muskie fisheries in North America. From the gigantic fish factory of the St. Lawrence River and the heavy currents of the Niagara River, to the vastness of Lake Ontario and Lake Erie and the stocked gem of Chautauqua Lake, New York abounds in opportunities for anglers to pursue these hard-hitting and hard-fighting, toothy, apex predators. This article offers tips and a list of tools and tackle necessary for the novice or less seasoned muskie angler.

Pursuing muskies is a multi-decade endeavor for the most serious and committed muskie anglers, and even they will admit they are constantly learning. Fishing for these beasts can seriously test your resolve and commitment to the sport. Muskie anglers must be willing to sacrifice days, weeks or even months on the water, often in less than ideal conditions, to land one huge fish. Then, as soon as the fish is landed, their only goal is to release it as fast as possible. In that respect, muskie fishing may seem to be a silly exercise. If you agree, read no further. If you want to start fishing for muskies, however, read on.

You will find the first few years of your muskie angling experience to be the hardest (and most expensive), but they may also be the most rewarding. Learning how to fish for muskies by exploring waterways, by experimenting, and through trial and error before seeing the fruits of your labors make successful muskie fishing especially rewarding. Then there are the fish themselves of course. There is a certain allure to catching fish that swim alone atop the food chain. With the exception of lake sturgeon, muskies are the largest freshwater fish in New York’s waters, and they have teeth-big, sharp teeth. Pursuing these fish can become addictive. For dyed-in-the-wool muskie anglers, other freshwater fish are viewed as merely bait.

Catch and Release

Serious muskie anglers don’t keep muskies, period. Also, when the season opens in 2015, minimum size limits in waters such as the St. Lawrence and Niagara River will be 54 inches and for inland waters, 40 inches. Because you will have to release almost all the muskies you catch, the most important aspect of muskie fishing is knowing how to properly and effectively handle and release the fish. Although muskies are at the top of the food chain, they are very susceptible to post-release mortality if not handled properly. The first step is having the right release tools.

Do Not Go Muskie Fishing Without These Tools

Large coated landing net designed specifically for muskies: The large hoop and bag enables you to land really large fish with minimal damage to them. After netting a muskie, never bring the net with the fish into your boat. A thrashing muskie on the bottom of a boat with large hooks in its mouth could injure you or your boat partner(s) and it will certainly injure itself. While removing hooks from a muskie, keep its head under water so it is able to breathe.

Hook cutters: By cutting hooks which cannot be easily removed, you place less stress on the muskie and allow for a more successful release. This will be the most important tool you’ll ever purchase if a hook from a muskie lure becomes embedded in you, especially if the lure is also attached to a thrashing muskie.

Large long-nose pliers: Muskie lures are large, with big hooks. Long pliers enable you to keep your hands away from them as you remove hooks and hook pieces.

Jaw spreaders: On occasion, muskies take lures deep into their mouths, and jaw spreaders enable you to access these deeply embedded hooks.

Proper Handling and Release

Limit a muskie’s time out of water to less than 30 seconds. If you want to get a picture of your muskie, have your camera ready and make sure your partner knows how to use it before you remove the muskie from the water. One picture with you and the fish and a quick measurement-in the water or on a wet bump (measuring) board-is sufficient.

Holding a muskie: Slide four fingers of one hand under the fish’s gill flap (be sure to avoid the gills), with the thumb on the outside where the two gill covers meet, and hold very firmly while cradling the fish under its belly with the other hand. No vertical holds. Best yet-do not take the fish out of the water at all.

Releasing a muskie: Hold the fish in the water until it swims away under its own power. If you’ve done everything right, this should take less than a minute.

Angling Gear

Muskies can be caught by trolling and casting in almost any water containing muskies in New York State. A modest investment in muskie-specific equipment is needed. This equipment often varies, depending on whether you troll or cast:

Rods

Trolling: Medium-heavy trolling rods 8 to 10 feet long and rated for 20 to 40 lb. test line. Acceptable trolling rods can be found for under $50.

Casting: Rods at least 8 feet long, heavy action, with stiff but modest flex in the upper third are a good place to start. Beginner casting rods can be found for about $100.

Reels

Trolling: Larger capacity line counters are the favored reels among trollers. Counters with larger line capacities and handles are best – they make it easier to reel in large muskie lures and muskies alike. Good reels can be purchased for around $100.

Casting: You’ll be chucking large lures all day long, so don’t go cheap on a casting reel. Larger capacity reels with large handles, good cranking power, and fast retrieve rates are preferable. Expect to spend $100-$200 or more on an appropriate casting reel.

Line

Trolling and casting: 80-pound braid is the standard. It is tough, but thin, enabling your lures to go deep when trolling. The diameter of 80-pound braid is around that of 17-pound monofilament, which makes it easy to cast.

Leaders

Trolling: 100 to 200-pound seven-strand or solid stainless steel wire at least 3 feet long. Trollers who bounce lures on the bottom often use leaders up to 6 feet long.

Casting: 200-pound solid wire, 8 to 12 inches long.

Never use cheap leaders-they will fail on a big fish. Muskies will always exploit the weakest link in your presentation, so be sure that all leaders have quality snaps and swivels.

Lures

There are thousands of lures to choose from, which can present a problem for anglers new to the sport. The truth is, you only need a few.

For trolling deep: A few large-lipped deep divers 8 to 12 inches long. Legend Perchbaits, Believers, Depth Raiders, Jakes, Ernies, Grandmas and Mr. Toothy baits are tough, solid, and proven muskie catchers.

For trolling shallow: Large in-line spinners and spinnerbaits work well. Also, 6 to 8-inch Pikie minnow-type plugs will troll through and over most shallow aquatic environments.

Casting: Popular casting baits include jerk baits, crank baits, in-line spinners, spinnerbaits, top water baits, rubber creatures and tubes (like those made by Red October Baits). They are countless. Go online and purchase a few proven, quality-made baits.

Colors: A few lures in natural colors (perch, sucker, walleye, shad), a few in hot colors (firetiger, orange tiger, hot perch) and a few in black (night shiner, black perch) are all you need to get started. In clearer water, start with natural colors or black. In murky water, hotter colors can excel. While fishing at night, black, white or hot colors are good choices.

Angling Tips and Tactics

  • It’s all about location. Keys for casting and trolling shallow areas are weeds and their edges. Cast and troll above and along the edges. Any deviations from the norm – such as points, openings, and rocks among weed flats-are prime areas for muskies.
  • If you like trolling deep, also make sure to key in on edges, especially rocky breaklines or deep shoals (which act as feeding shelves). Troll both the top and bottom of the breakline. Let your lure hit and bounce off the rocks, which will help trigger strikes from curious muskies.
  • Vary the speeds of your presentations until you contact fish. When casting, erratically moving your baits may trigger strikes. The same applies to trolling. Vary your speed until a muskie strikes. Experienced trollers often pull their baits up to 6 MPH (or more) when water temperatures are warm, and may drop speeds to under 2 MPH when water temperatures dip into the high 30s.
  • Muskies tend to follow baits. At the end of each cast, you should alter the direction of your lure with a 90-degree “L” or sweep them into a figure 8 or large circle, which will result in more strikes. When trolling, jerking your rod forward may also trigger more strikes.
  • Fight and land muskies as quickly as possible. The longer you fight a muskie, the more apt it is to succumb to post-release mortality. Even very large muskies can be landed quickly with the proper equipment.
  • The presence of baitfish often means predators are near. Windblown weed edges, rocks and points may congregate baitfish and therefore muskies. Focusing your attention on these areas is always a good place to start.
  • Make sure your hooks are very sharp. Enticing muskies to hit is not an easy task. You don’t want to blow a chance because of dull hooks.
  • Change your leaders when they become kinked, as this will severely weaken them.
  • Make sure your line is free from nicks and frays. Damaged line will break easily.
  • For lures that don’t run straight, bend the pull point the opposite way the lure is running improperly.
  • Keep your drags tight when casting to ensure hook-ups. When trolling, drags should be set so line may be pulled out by hand with only slight difficulty.
  • Soft plastic baits, like the Bull Dawg and Red October Baits tubes, have drastically different actions than more traditional musky lures, and are great under difficult conditions. Tubes excel when jigged in situations involving current.
  • Learning from experienced musky anglers will cut your learning curve exponentially, but don’t be afraid to explore and try different tactics and techniques.
  • Muskies often become active as fronts approach and during major moon phases. Focusing your time on the water during these periods may result in more strikes.
  • Time spent on the water is the key to muskie fishing. The more time you spend fishing for muskies, the more muskies you will catch. It is that simple.
  • This is a very basic article which was condensed for this guide, but it should help you get started in your pursuit of New York State’s ultimate freshwater angling achievement-catching and releasing a trophy muskellunge!

Personal site – Grapes

Soft baits do not alert the fish when gripping, the foam fish is exactly what a predator can handle, and making it with your own hands is as easy as shelling pears. In such a foam lure, the shape of its body is the main feature, it is the drop-shaped shape, to be more precise, the shape similar to a falling drop has increased aerodynamics.

Any predator, especially perch, pike-perch, pike and even catfish, will hit on such a fish from the paragon. Foam fish easily cope with long-distance casting, they do not practically cling to bottom obstacles, the design is such that the double’s hooks are attached close to the body. Wagging behind the jig head, the bait stimulates the lurking predator.

Advantages of foam rubber

The foam rubber has a number of indisputable advantages that made it popular:

Softness. Unlike the situation when fishing with the same spinner, when a predator grabs a foam-rubber fish, he does not have any fears – the bait is perceived as a living object. Also, due to the softness of the foam rubber during the attack of the predatory fish, the hooks are easily exposed and catch the trophy.

Buoyancy. Since the foam rubber is buoyant, the lure occupies a vertical position in the water, which additionally attracts a predator.

Range. There are not so many types of lures that can compete with foam rubber in this parameter.

Elasticity. Foam rubber, saturated with water, becomes as elastic as possible and thanks to this it starts to play just amazingly.

Porosity. Due to this property of foam rubber, baits made from it are very convenient to impregnate with various attractants and flavors, and these smells will last for a long time.

Cheapness. Since foam rubber is a very cheap material, it’s not a pity to lose lures from it on the hooks.

Effect of application

The action of the drug is based on pheromones. These are biologically active substances that living organisms release into the environment, they specifically affect behavior, emotional and physiological state, as well as metabolic processes. The developed substance acts similarly to the natural pheromone, causes an unmotivated increase in the appetite of fish and the need to gather in a herd. The tool shows its properties even at a long distance, which can reach several kilometers. Fish catch the action of the drug, which is based on special biological substances. They have an intoxicating effect on the brain of fish and provoke their feeding and herd instincts. The fish begin to look for bait, that is, the bite activator itself, and, thus, are grouped into schools. An important point should be noted: the attractant attracts fish at any time of the year and in completely different water, for example, standing, running, fresh or salty water.Dynamite Effect was developed in the research and production laboratory of LLC FishingBay only in 2015, but despite such a short period of time, many fishermen have already appreciated its effect, which once again confirms its high efficiency.

Expert opinion

Scientific fact: fish are able to catch the slightest trace of a substance dissolved in water at a distance of several kilometers. Fish, from long distances, gather in schools in search of the source of the spreading substances: in other words, they are looking for a bite activator.Conventionally, this can be compared with the reaction of cats to valerian.

Let’s talk more about this and pay attention to the most popular activators.

I learned about this attractant thanks to my grandson. We often go fishing with him, because our whole family is very fond of fish. And in general we really like this activity, but our trips are not always successful in terms of catch. Sometimes we don’t bring anything at all, we’ll be so lucky. We won’t guess with time, the weather is not the most favorable for fishing, then what other problems … And once the grandson went to some fishing forum, where they discussed various secrets and tricks. There they were actively discussing this tool, the dynamite reviews had a positive effect, so he decided to also order this activator. At first I did not believe in its miraculous effect, but, as it turned out, it was in vain! Now there is always fresh fish in our house, and I would even say a bunch of fish! Try it out!

You bought an activator and returned from fishing without a catch? Did the fish show no interest in your bait? Most likely you got a fake! Do not get caught in the scammers’ networks, order the activator only from the manufacturer, thereby you will protect yourself from unnecessary waste of money and will not waste time waiting for a rich catch.

Product Description

As for me, a long and thorough first time researching a product is an important step before ordering things online.
unplanned purchases are as much awesome as a risk, so I thought it was worth spending some time doing research thoroughly.

It seems that I was incredibly lucky to stumble upon 5 pcs. MIZUGIWA Pike Lundberg Stalker Jerkbait Muscovy Bait 3D Eyes for Fishing 120mm 50g so willingly offered from this seller. My research has shown that this item sets itself apart from the vast majority of similar products due to its unsurpassed quality.
I looked through some of the universal requirements that tend to apply to this kind of product and found that the one that
which I bought shines from the rest and is in every way more than an advertising alternative for this price point.

I could have wished for a lower price, of course (one that is much closer to zero, how about that?), But I have to admit the existing prices are really fair. You shouldn’t expect a top-notch quality item to be ridiculously cheap, as that would mean either poor quality raw materials, mediocre product quality, or both.
Or, worse still, it would mean trading for common workers. How about a no, not the correct type of item I would like to return with my purchase.

I would also like to write that when I received my order delivered and unfolded the parcel I was glad to see that 5 pcs.MIZUGIWA Pike Lundberg Stalker Jerkbait Muscovy Lure 3D Eyes for Fishing 120mm 50g arrived in perfect working condition,
without any flaws or flaws or things like this. It’s great to know what to buy has shown its worth, so yes, I certainly recommend purchasing this one.
