Keep Swimming

Maybe you should breathe deep for this blog post, it might get a little long-winded, I have a story to tell. Last week I was catching up with a friend and like most of my conversations lately, COVID was a hot topic, he spoke about the effect it is having on his business and commented that felt like he was drowning under the pressure of everything.

I replied with the first thing that popped in my head and being a Disney Fan

You know what Dory would say?
When life gets you down,
Just keep swimming
Just keep swimming
Just keep swimming

I think I even sang from the first line of Just keep swimming. I was feeling proud, I made him smile and even laugh at my terrible singing until 5 minutes later he asked who Dory was?

Thanks to Google I was able to pull up the clip from Finding Nemo on my phone.

I had been planning on making him a card to say, I am always here for coffee and a chat.  Males are not always that into cards so I was questioning if I should just text and then I saw Global Design Project had an Aquatic theme challenge and that reminded me of the Whale Of A Time DSP.

When I started flicking through the Whale Of A Time designs I spotted a sheet of fish and turtles horizontally around the paper and that would work for the sketch at The Spot this week.

That is a tricky sketch but I am happy with the outcome. Can you see the swimming fish and turtles?

To make them look further in the background I placed White Vellum over the top embossed using Tasteful Textile Folder and sewed the edges.  I also added White  and Balmy Blue ink splatter.

No stamps were used in the card, which happens so rarely. The greeting ‘breathe deep’ is from Flowers For Every Season Memories & More Card Pack.

For inside, I typed up the words and printed it on Whisper White A4 Card Stock and went to town fussy cutting the tiny fish!

It was such a fun card to make.

90,000 Rail Sector Efficiency Compendium

Establishment of the Australian Railroad Corporation (ARTC)

Originally, each of Australia’s six states independently built and operated its own national railroad; however, the federal government also operated two transcontinental highways. In the 1990s, the federal and state governments implemented extensive reform of the Australian rail industry.

These measures provided open access to the rail network and created the Australian Railroad Corporation (ARTC), which began operations on July 1, 1998; its creation was one of the most significant steps taken in the reform process. 133 The corporation initially operated the interstate federal rail network, but over time, the corporation took over the management of most of the interstate rail network in five states, as well as export coal lines Hunter Valley (Figure 1).

Prior to 2004, ARTC’s core business was the maintenance and operation of interstate trunk lines in Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia (up to Calgoorley). In 2004, ARTC took over much of the New South Wales (NSW) network and became responsible for major federal government investment efforts to develop the network, as well as contract maintenance for the rural NSW network. Two more changes to the ARTC network have occurred in the last decade (see.Box 1), and ARTC is currently responsible for the interstate route from Calgoorlie in the west through Melbourne and Sydney to Brisbane, Queensland, together with the Hunter Valley coal lines in New South Wales (NSW). Ultimately, the original 4,443 route-km network operated by the Australian National (AN) access department has now grown to 7,112 route-km, of which 8 percent is multi-track. ARTC also maintains a regional branch network in NSW with 2,828 route-km of working tracks and a similar volume of non-working lines.134

133 Appendix A provides a description of the Australian rail sector and the situation that led to the creation of ARTC.
134 This category includes partially completed lines as well as closed lines, which nevertheless still require maintenance of bridges, culverts, etc. 90,000 How Up Used Slack to Build Australia’s First Digital Bank and Won the Love of Over 340,000 Customers

Up, Australia’s top-rated banking app, was created to simplify financial matters for Australian youth.Upsiders) who save and spend money in a completely different financial world than their parents. To build this high-tech collaboration between software company Ferocia and Bendigo and Adelaide Bank, the Up team needed fast and customizable tools. They chose Slack, a channel-based messaging platform, to build systems, technologies, and processes for speed and scalability.

Up Products include a daily account with real-time spending information and advanced savings accounts that allow customers to budget, spend, save and move funds within Australia or abroad.Since its launch in 2018, the number of registered customers has exceeded 340,000. This is an indicator of the incredible popularity and record-breaking growth of the digital bank Up.

“We are a very tight-knit team with extremely ambitious goals,” says Anne Shea, Head of Content and Community for Up. We use Slack all the time to stay connected and bring together our talents for a common goal of helping Australian youth get their finances and dreams come true. ”

The banking industry averages support response times from four hours to four days. Up decided to work differently, so they use Slack to coordinate responses on social networks and through a specially created chat “Talk to us” – this allows the client to respond in just a couple of minutes.

Quick problem solving with Slack

Transparency helps build trust in your team. By using Slack, engineers can work openly to quickly identify problems and assign people to solve them, make pull requests, and improve the quality of their code.

Slack helps break down barriers between engineering, customer support, product development, design and marketing teams so they can freely share knowledge and data, and work together on different processes. Everyone can open the necessary applications without leaving the one in which they are already working. With channel-based notifications, the entire team can work faster and stay connected across the company.

For example, customer support can easily see completed pull requests from GitHub changes from engineers in the feed and tell customers that the issue has been fixed.Increased transparency in deployment also means that the entire team can see how fast code delivery helps ensure user-friendliness and consistency, even after new functionality is added.

Cross-functional visibility of the engineering team channel #deployment (code sent to the industrial environment) and the #outages channel (record of circuit breaker trips) means that Slack channels consolidate incident information in real time with historical context. “All this allows our team to work quickly,” says Shi. “There are no delays. Communication people can see the problem emerge, the team fixes it, and the fix is deployed. We don’t have to wait a week until the next meeting to receive this information. ”

Slack helps the Up engineering team deploy code up to six times a day, which exceeds both the industry standard of once a month and the high-performance average estimate of four times a day.An unprecedented indicator!

Engineers can align their actions with the company’s mission by connecting to support, marketing and public relations channels. “By using Slack,” says Engineering Team Leader Michael Gall, “we not only inform our fellow engineers about which pull requests and codes need to be coordinated and reviewed, but we also keep minutes and coordinate meetings, and we also always stay in touch with our teammates. “

“Slack allows customer service to reach every corner of the business. We can instantly report customer concerns through collaborative channels and find information about product capabilities without distracting other teams.

Nick McCann Customer Support Specialist, UP

Build customer loyalty and solve problems the same day with Slack

Your team will be able to perform better and increase their competitiveness if there is a process for quick access to customer requests.

According to the 2021 Customer Service Trends Report from Zendesk, support teams that remain in constant contact with developers demonstrate greater efficiency and competitive advantage. For example, Slack’s integration with AppFollow allows all Up employees to see reviews that help improve customer service by making it faster, more accurate, and more human.

With aggregated app data, reviews, downloads, and sales from app stores, it’s easier to solve customer problems while staying on the same page with them.“We have a Slack channel called #feedback ,” Shi says. “We get instant feedback on it. We see every review. If clients have difficulties, everyone will see it, discuss it, and then decide together.

How does this affect the speed of problem solving? Up customers report application or website errors to support and the errors are successfully resolved the same day.

“Slack has a close eye on customer service across all areas of the business,” says Up support specialist Nick McCann.“We can instantly report customer issues through collaborative channels and find information about product features without distracting other teams.”

While Slack notifications keep you up to date, it’s important sometimes to focus on a specific task or just take a break from work. To do this, features such as Do Not Disturb (DND) mode, customize Slack notifications to receive only the notifications that interest you, and setting the clock in Do Not Disturb mode by default.“By being able to select or exit channels, users can also control the amount of information they consume and avoid information overload,” said Paul Tagell, Head of Marketing for Up.

Slack’s robust search feature allows support personnel to connect to the shared knowledge base without having to open another application. Tracking customer metrics – from new customer signups to the effectiveness of marketing campaigns and websites – becomes easier, allowing you to analyze customer behavior and sentiment on a daily basis.

“I can confidently say that without this well-tuned feedback, Up would not have achieved its popularity today,” emphasizes Anson Parker, Head of Products for Up.

“When our team and industry partners are connected to the Slack channel, everyone can see what we’re going to create and release in the future. This opens up a whole dialogue, which otherwise would be unlikely. ”

Dominic Pym Co-founder, Up

Heavy-duty collaboration with industry partners with Slack Connect

Strategic partnerships can provide digital banks with faster time-to-market while better meeting customer needs. With Slack Connect, Up can share a secure Slack channel with multiple industry partners.

Slack Connect helps the company connect and bring in external partners so teams can quickly identify issues and maintain a common context in a single workspace.

In 2019, Up became the first bank in Australia to formally partner with the deferred payment service Afterpay and the international payment service Wise. These key integrations enable customers to better make critical financial decisions without leaving the Up app.

Slack Connect helps both internal and external teams stay in the loop, track incidents and actively communicate, even when they are involved in a project in the middle. “We recently hooked up partners to our weekly demos,” says Dominic Pym, Up’s co-founder. He values Slack as a tool that encourages practical solutions, constructive feedback, and transparent communication.

Up intends to maintain transparency as it grows, which will allow the company to differentiate itself from typical retail banks in maintaining a balance of security and openness. A publicly available and constantly evolving product roadmap creates a valuable feedback loop from both customers and partners.

“We absolutely need tools like Slack and automation,” says Pym. “And it is also very important that by uniting with our partners and clients, we all feel like one big family.”The combination of autonomy, trust and openness enables the team to create, think through, design and bring to life the best digital banking experience.

90,000 Australian History: Europeans on the Continent 90,030 First steps in opening Australia by Europeans

The first Europeans to penetrate the continent were probably Portuguese navigators. There is evidence of their visit to the western, northern and northeastern coasts of Australia in the first half of the 16th century. Plots of territories are already depicted on some maps of that time (for example, in Nicholas Vallard’s atlas of 1547). However, these visits to Australia were most likely accidental. Since the beginning of the 17th century, the continent has attracted the attention of several European powers at once.

In 1606, a Spanish expedition led by Luis Vaez Torres discovered the strait separating Australia from New Guinea (Torres Strait). At the same time, Dutch sailors also joined the study: the Carpentaria Bay and the Cape York Peninsula were surveyed by the expedition of Willem Janszon.

In 1616 another Dutchman, Derk Hartog, landed on the coast of western Australia. Further expeditions were equipped with Dutch sailors in 1623, 1627, 1629. By the early 18th century, the west coast of Australia had been explored and mapped by Dutch, English and French sailors. No attempts were made to populate the territory during this period. The open lands were called New Holland.

In 1642-1643. the voyage of the Dutchman Abel Tasman took place in order to further explore Australia. On this expedition, he could not come close to the shores of the continent, but discovered the western coast of the island of Tasmania. In 1644, Tasman made a second voyage, during which he mapped 4.7 thousand km of the northern coast of Australia and proved that all the lands discovered by the Dutch earlier were part of one continent.

British Australian Studies

The English artist, writer and pirate William Dampier, sailing under the pirate flag, in 1688 stumbled upon the west coast of Australia. Upon returning to his homeland, Dampir published notes about his journey, where he told about what he saw. From that moment on, the British also began to show interest in New Holland. A ship was separated from the royal fleet, and Dampir led an expedition to the shores of the mainland.

However, this attempt by the British ended unsuccessfully, except for the discovery of pearl shells, which subsequently brought significant benefits to the English treasury. In 1768, preparations began for a large Pacific scientific expedition led by James Cook. She started in 1769 on the ship “Endeavor”, and in 1770 Cook declared the southeast coast of Australia British possession and named New South Wales.

Shortly after Cook’s voyage, London decided to colonize the open country. An important role in this was played by the acquisition of independence by the 13 North American colonies, as a result of which England lost not only vast territories in the New World, but also the ability to send exiles there. That is why the initial development of Australia took place in the form of the organization of hard labor settlements there.

The settling of Australia by Europeans and the continuation of the “development” of the continent

On January 26, 1788, Captain Arthur Phillip, appointed Governor of New South Wales, founded the Sydney Cove settlement, which became the predecessor of the city of Sydney. With the squadron, the first European settlers arrived on the mainland – 850 prisoners and 200 soldiers. This event is now celebrated as the beginning of modern Australian history and a national holiday.

The first group of “free” settlers from England arrived in 1793, but until the mid-19th century their proportion among Europeans in Australia was small. This is how the gradual settlement of the continent began. The British colony included not only Australia but also New Zealand. The settlement of Tasmania began in 1803. At the beginning of the 19th century, the British discovered the strait separating Tasmania from Australia. In 1814, the navigator Matthew Flinders proposed to call the southern continent Australia (Terra Australis). Exploration of the interior of the continent continued until the end of the 19th century.

In 1827 the British government officially announced the establishment of British sovereignty over the entire continent. The center of the British presence was the southeastern coast of the mainland with the islands — the colony of New South Wales. In 1825, a new colony, Tasmania, was separated from its structure. In 1829, the Swan River Colony was founded, which became the nucleus of the future state of Western Australia. Later there are: South Australia (in 1836), New Zealand (in 1840), Victoria (in 1851), Queensland (in 1859). In 1863, the Northern Territory, previously part of the province of South Australia, was founded.

The dispatch of convicts to Australia was reduced only in 1840., and completely stopped by 1868 Colonization was accompanied by the establishment and expansion of settlements throughout the continent. The largest of them are Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Large areas were cleared of forest and shrubbery and began to be used for agricultural purposes.

The arrival of Europeans in Australia proved disastrous for the Aborigines. The indigenous people were pushed back from water sources and hunting grounds. Many of the natives died of hunger and thirst, or were killed in clashes with white settlers.Others died from diseases introduced by Europeans. The aboriginal population was used as cheap labor in the livestock (ranches) of white settlers in the interior regions of the country. In the mid-19th century, the remaining indigenous population was displaced, partly voluntarily, partly forcibly, on missions and reservations. By 1921, the total number of Australian Aborigines had dropped to 60,000.

Australian Territories Self-Government

In 1851the gold rush began in Australia. This has seriously changed the demographic situation on the continent. The influx of immigrants from Great Britain, Ireland, other European countries, North America and China began. In the 1850s alone, the population of the colonies almost tripled – from 405 thousand to 1.2 million people. This created the preconditions for the development of self-government here. New South Wales became the first Australian territory to receive self-government within the British Empire in 1855.

Golden fever.(

This happened after the revolt in the gold mines of Victoria. The rebels demanded the introduction of universal suffrage and the abolition of special permits for gold mining. Somewhat later, in 1856, Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia received self-government, Queensland in 1859, and Western Australia in 1890. Unions of urban and agricultural workers began to emerge, fighting for higher wages and shorter working hours. It was here in Australia that, for the first time in the world, skilled workers achieved the establishment of an 8-hour working day. Uniform postal rules were established, the armed forces were created. All this contributed to the acceleration of the economic development of Australia.

In the same year, the Constitution of the Australian Union was presented to the House of Commons, which was signed by Queen Victoria of England. In 1911, construction began on a new capital, Canberra. Between the First and Second World Wars, Australia received from Great Britain some territories that were previously directly subordinate to London: Norfolk Island (1914 BC).), Ashmore and Cartier Islands (1931) and claims to the Australian Antarctic Territory (1933).

Independent Australia within the British Commonwealth

Australia gained independence under the Westminster Statute of 1931, which was ratified only in 1942. The British king remained the head of state.

In World War II, Australia fought as a member of the British Commonwealth on two fronts: in Europe – against Germany and Italy, in the Pacific – against Japan.Although Japan was unable to conduct a ground operation in Australia, it constantly threatened to invade, and Japanese aircraft bombed cities in the north of the country.

After World War II, the Australian government began a massive program to welcome immigrants from Europe. Between 1948 and 1975, 2 million new residents arrived in Australia. Since 1973, the flow of Asian migrants began, which significantly changed the demographic and cultural life of the country.

Since 1986, Australia has finally ceased constitutional ties with Great Britain, but until now the British queen is considered the formal head of state. The de facto head of state is the Prime Minister of Australia. The main direction of the country’s modern foreign policy is interaction with the countries of the Asia-Pacific region.

90,000 Scientists have discovered mountains resembling Mordor on the ocean floor

Australian scientists have found seamounts in the Indian Ocean, similar to the fantastic dark kingdom of Mordor from the Lord of the Rings trilogy by John Tolkien. The greatest interest of researchers was aroused by the giant caldera of an underwater volcano in the form of an eye. She reminded them of the “all-seeing eye” of the main antagonist of the saga – the villain Sauron.

The CSIRO research vessel RV Investigator was conducting marine biodiversity assessments in the Indian Ocean. On the 12th day of the expedition, scientists accidentally discovered seamounts of an unusual shape, including a previously unknown volcano in the form of a giant eye, which they called the Eye of Sauron. The researchers reported this in an article on the online service The Conversation.

The ancient submarine volcano was found with a powerful sonar (multibeam echo sounder) at a depth of 3100 meters in the exclusive economic zone of Australia, 280 km southeast of Christmas Island.

“Unknown and unimaginable, this volcano appeared on our monitors in the form of a giant oval depression, the so-called caldera, measuring 6.2 by 4.8 km. It is surrounded by a rampart 300 m high (reminiscent of Sauron’s eyelids) and has a cone-shaped peak (pupil) 300 m high in the center, ”writes the author and expedition member Tim O’Hara, senior curator of the department of marine invertebrates at the Victoria Museums Association.

The deep-sea volcano, which reminded scientists of the giant eye of the main villain of the Tolkien saga “The Lord of the Rings”, was not the only find of scientists. Further mapping of the seabed with echo sounder showed a smaller mountain covered with numerous volcanic cones south of the Eye of Sauron, and a flat-topped seamount was discovered even further south. Scientists also named both mountains in honor of a fantastic trilogy: the first received the name of the main fortification of Sauron Barad-dur (Dark Fortress), the second was named after the Mordor ridge of Ered Lithuania (Ash Mountains).

As the researchers established, the Eye of Sauron, Barad-dur and Ered-Litvi are part of the Karma seamount range. Geologists believe that these mountains formed next to an ancient sea ridge more than 100 million years ago, when Australia was much farther south than it is now – not far from Antarctica.

At that time, Ered Lithuania jutted out over the sea surface, and its summit was destroyed by waves before the heavy seamount slowly sank back to the soft ocean floor.
Now, scientists have found out, the peak of Ered Lithuania is already 2600 m below sea level.

“There is a geological mystery here. For a mountain over 100 million years old, its caldera looks surprisingly “young”. Ered Lithuania is covered with an almost 100-meter layer of sand and mud, formed as a result of the sinking of dead organisms to its summit over millions of years. With such a rate of sedimentation, the caldera should have already been partially “tightened”. Instead, it is possible that volcanoes have continued to grow or new volcanoes have formed at the caldera floor. Our restless Earth is never calm, ”said Tim O’Hara.

Researchers note that underwater eruptions at great depths can go unnoticed. One of the few clear signs of such an event is a kind of “rafts” of light pumice, floating in the sea after the release of magma.

Caldera, scientists remind, is formed after the collapse of the crater walls or as a result of a catastrophic volcanic eruption. Molten magma at the base of the volcano moves upward, leaving empty chambers, the summit collapses and a large basin forms. As the volcano continues to erupt magma, a new summit often begins to form in the center of the basin. One of the most famous calderas on Earth belongs to the active volcano Krakatoa in Indonesia. After a catastrophic eruption in 1883 that killed at least 36,417 people, much of the island was destroyed, leaving only fragments of the ridge above the water. By 1927, a small volcano Anak Krakatoa (child of Krakatoa) had grown in the center of the caldera.

O’Hara writes that life is adapting to different geological processes, and at present the Ered of Lithuania is covered with marine animals.Snake tails, starfish, crabs and worms burrow into or move along the sandy surface. The rocks are inhabited by predatory fish, black fan-shaped corals, sea whips, sponges and shells.

“Our mission is to map the seabed and explore the marine life of these ancient and secluded seascapes. The Australian government recently announced plans to establish two major marine parks in different regions. Our expedition will provide scientific data to help manage these areas in the future. The second part of our expedition to the Cocos Islands will most likely take place next year, ”concluded Tim O’Hara.

Research is carried out on a 94-meter research vessel RV Investigator specially equipped for such operations in the ocean, which is equipped with a wide range of onboard and modular laboratories and equipment.
The vessel carries out biological, oceanographic, geological and atmospheric research. It can accommodate 40 scientists and technicians, as well as 20 team members.Without replenishment and refueling, it can be in the ocean for 60 days and travel up to 10 thousand nautical miles (18.52 thousand km).
