LIGHTERS 101: BUTANE LIGHTER MAINTENANCE

BUTANE LIGHTER MAINTENANCE

Butane lighters can be tricky to operate properly.  Lighter mechanics and the challenges of dealing with pressurized gas require a little extra care and attention.  The most important part of maintaining a reliable butane lighter is to fill it properly and keep the flame head (or burner) clean.

First, adjust the flame dial to the lowest possible setting.

The next and most important step to properly refilling a butane lighter is to PURGE it.  Purging gets rid of excess oxygen which remains in the gas tank.  All refillable butane lighters have a valve on the bottom that works like a tire valve.  Before refilling the lighter, you must push the “tire” like valve IN to purge/evacuate the excess gas and oxygen.  The excess oxygen and residual gas left inside will seep out and make a “hissing” sound.  By using a match stick or small screwdriver, you can repeatedly push the valve in until you cannot hear any more air escaping. PURGING will empty the lighter’s reservoir tank and ensure a clean and undiluted refill.

To FILL your lighter with butane, first turn the lighter and butane upside down.  Then gently mate the butane can with the lighter valve.  Push the butane can down for approximately 5 seconds or until the lighter will not accept any more gas.

In addition to proper filling, it is imperative to keep the flame head/burner CLEANand free of ash and debris.  Regular cleaning can be accomplished with an air burst from your mouth or a compressed air duster.  When using a compressed air duster, make sure you don’t ignite the lighter as the contents of the air duster may be flammable and dangerous.

BUTANE

DO NOT USE CHEAP BUTANE!!!

Butane is a natural gas product, made from petroleum, that is flavorless and ideal for lighting luxury tobacco products.  The best butane is filtered several times for optimal purity.  Inferior butane will clog or corrupt a quality lighter; so buying the best is requisite.  butane is sold pressurized in various sizes and containers, so it is best to match the brand of butane with the lighter you need to refill.

Shop Our Brands.Ferro rods are making fire starting without matches or a lighter much easier, but sometimes you are hungry and in a hurry and you just want to use a lighter. Since it is easy to store a can of butane in your emergency supplies, and since butane and Bic lighters are so inexpensive, being able to refill Bic lighters would be a huge benefit in emergency preparedness.

The good news is yes, you can refill a Bic lighter from the top. And it is not that difficult. Since the Bic is meant to be disposable, you need to be careful not to break any of the parts as you are taking the Bic lighter apart, or you will have to buy a new one. In this article below I will explain the steps in refilling the Bic lighter from the top.

Refilling Bic lighters through the bottom is more common. However both work. You just have to weigh the pros and cons and choose the method you prefer. You will find this method from the top might be the one you like best of all. There are some real advantages to refilling your Bic lighter from the top. Basically you are just disassembling the top of the lighter, and then refilling it, so you know that when the lighter is put back together it will function just as the manufacturer intended.

Refilling it from the bottom, although effective, changes the lighter a bit from how it came from the factory. And the flint will last a couple of years even under heavy use. So I encourage you to read both articles they are both shortand watch the videos, then decide. People who swear by all three ways.

I tend to learn things the hard way sometimes…thats all I will say here. I recommend that you do this on a large table with a cloth or towel spread out on it first. I have seen several people online recommending doing this on a tray with edges if you have one. If so that might be a good idea as well.

Now to refill the lighter, following are the steps to take:. I include it only as an example. Pretty soon I plan on filming my own example of how to do this to a Bic lighter. Once I do that video I will replace it with this video so you have a more accurate example. I still recommend watching this video in the mean time because it will put a visualization to some of the above steps. I would like to thank you for taking the time to read this entire article. I sincerely hope that it was helpful to you.

Fill the lighter for 15 seconds by pushing down on the butane can. Larger lighters may require more fueling time.A lighter is a portable device used to create a flameand to ignite a variety of combustible materials, such as gas stovesfireworkscandles or cigarettes.

It consists of a metal or plastic container filled with a flammable fluid or pressurized liquid gas, a means of ignition to produce the flame, and some provision for extinguishing the flame. Alternatively, a lighter can be powered by electricity, using an electric arc or heating element to ignite the target. The first lighters were converted flintlock pistols that used gunpowder. The patenting of ferrocerium often misidentified as flint by Carl Auer von Welsbach in has made modern lighters possible.

When scratched it produces a large spark which is responsible for lighting the fuel of many lighters, and is suitably inexpensive for use in disposable items. Using Carl Auer von Welsbach’s flint, companies like Ronson were able to develop practical and easy to use lighters. InRonson released the first Pist-O-Liter, and inthe company developed its first lighter, called the “Wonderlite”, which was a permanent match style of lighter.

Disassembling of a lighter to components

During WWl soldiers started to create lighters of empty cartridge cases. During that time one of the soldiers came up with a means to insert a chimney cap with holes in it to make it more windproof. The Zippo lighter and company were invented and founded by George Grant Blaisdell in In the s, there was a switch in the fuel of choice from naphtha to butane[ citation needed ] as butane allows for a controllable flame and has less odour. In modern times most of the world’s lighters are produced in France, the United States, China, and Thailand.

Naphtha based lighters employ a saturated cloth wick and fibre packing to absorb the fluid and prevent it from leaking. They employ an enclosed top to prevent the volatile liquid from evaporating, and to conveniently extinguish the flame. Butane lighters have a valved orifice that meters the butane gas as it escapes. A spark is created by striking metal against a flintor by pressing a button that compresses a piezoelectric crystal piezo ignitiongenerating an electric arc.

D3 v5 bar chart examples

In naphtha lighters, the liquid is sufficiently volatile, and flammable vapour is present as soon as the top of the lighter is opened.

Butane lighters combine the striking action with the opening of the valve to release gas. The spark ignites the flammable gas causing a flame to come out of the lighter which continues until either the top is closed naphtha typeor the valve is released butane type.

A metal enclosure with air holes generally surrounds the flame, and is designed to allow mixing of fuel and air while making the lighter less sensitive to wind. The high energy jet in butane lighters allows mixing to be accomplished by using Bernoulli’s principleso that the air hole s in this type tend to be much smaller and farther from the flame.

Specialized “windproof” butane lighters are manufactured for demanding conditions such as shipboard, high altitude, and wet climates. Some dedicated models double as synthetic rope cutters. The windproof capabilities are not achieved from higher pressure fuel; windproof lighters use the same fuel butane as standard lighters, and therefore develop the same vapour pressure. Instead, windproof lighters mix the fuel with air and pass the butane—air mixture through a catalytic coil.

An electric spark starts the initial flame, and soon the coil is hot enough to cause the fuel—air mixture to burn on contact. As opposed to lighters of the naphtha or standard butane type whether refillable or disposablewhich combust incompletely and thus create a sooty, orange “safety” flame, jet lighters produce a blue flame that in some cases is almost invisible and invariably burns at a far higher temperature. The spark in such lighters is almost always produced by an electric arc as seen belowbut some jet lighters burn with incomplete combustion.

Disadvantages to the jet lighter include a “roaring” noise in operation, as well as higher fuel consumption. Arc lighters use a spark to create a plasma [6] conduit between electrodes, which is then maintained by a lower voltage. The arc is then applied to a flammable substance to cause ignition. Some vehicles are equipped with an electric lighter located on the dashboard or in the well between the front seats.

Its electric heating element becomes hot in seconds upon activation.Vector Lighters. Vector lighters are known for their “great value for money” reputation. Their “No-Proof Warranty” is just that. You do not need proof of purchase.

Frost eJuice Dr. Grabow Dr. Custard eLiquid Mr. Freeze eLiquid Mr. Fruit eLiquid Mr. Good Vape Mr. Meringue Mr. Salt-E Mr.So In this I’ll cover diagnosis, repair and also dismantling and assembly most lighters designs’ are a common principle Ok so i got a slightly better camera than my phone, it’s an ancient canon powershot A60, only 2MP but check out the macro in the pics, it was top of the range once upon a time and it shows.

Tools – a small philips head screwdriver the tiny ones it almost alway philips head. First put gas in the lighter, you should have done this already but this helps us determine alot. Fill it with gas and listen, it may leak for a up to 30 seconds but that’s ok as long as it stops.

Push down the button, is there gas coming out and is there a definite click from the spark if yes to both this will be easy If there’s no gas coming out at the nozzle but it’s going somewhere then the connection has been broken probably nothing more than the flexible gas line has slipped off the seat of the reservoir end there’s more room here so it fall off that end but it’s easy to fix anyway If you push the button all the way down and no click go to the shop and buy a really crappy cheap electric lighter, not a bic though, their piezios have no wire.

This always happens if you set the lighter when it’s hot because it starts easier but wont once it’s cooled down again. All of these things are curable, this lighter hasn’t many original parts, at one point I was going to hotrod a second nozzle in but There’s no room, eventually I’ll make an instructable about how to make your own jet lighter.

This step just tells you how to take it all apart. First look on the bottom, there should be a small mostly likely philips head screw not far from the filler valve, unscrew it, usually that is the only thing holding a lighter together, now pull the casing down off the rest hold on to the cap and carefully pull the casing off now you should see the guts of your lighter, there’s probably 2 pins holding the assembly together.

Enter the safety pin, Use the pin or wire to push the pin out of its hole. Check the image, the parts should be recognizable, and the note will explain all This is easily the most common problem with jet lighters because they have metal bodies Basically the piezo is grounding out to the body or the chassis The first picture here shows the spark wire end pulled out and away a bit to so we get a clear idea of where we can put it.

Wrapping it around the nozzle is good if there are no close metal body parts but the best is definitely doing it like picture 2. You should have kept all the pins, but really you should hav just left it together had this been the case.

Before putting the case on, see if the lighter fires up if so slide the case on again and see if it still goes, if yes screw it back on and go light something up with it In my case a Marlboro Red but in yours it may be a fuse Simply check where gas is going by pushing down on the lever for the gas valve on the reservoir, look carefully along the gas line, you should see something similar to ‘heat wiggles’ from the change in desity between gas and air if theres a leak, I you have a crappy BBQ lighter kicking around then cannibalize that for some gas line there’s enough for five or six replacements and if you needed it they’re a great source of igniters due to the extra long cable.

If the gas still isn’t getting out the nozzle then the nozzle’s clogged, symptoms include the lighter bursting into flame for a second during use. At this point I can’t think of much else to go wrong, if the gas filler valve leaks when you fill it up then tighten it. If everything works but the lighter won’t light or can’t hold a flame turn down the gas flow a bit. If the flame sputters and has trouble keeping going then it’s too weak to stay above the nozzle, turn the gas flow up a little.

Finally we put it back together. If there’s any problem I have missed comment me and I’ll add steps, to be honest I can’t think of anything other than components going wrong after this. Right now we rebuild the lighter From the picture you should be able to tell your own parts easily enough. Again if there’s anything I missed or any questions comment me and I’ll do my best to help. Colibri Slide Double Jet Lighter. Colibri Quasar Cigar Punch. The Colibri company produces watches, money clips and other accessories, but may be best known for its lighters. Featuring specialized lighters, such as those designed specifically for women or for lighting cigars, Colibri creates high-quality products that are sold worldwide. However, like all products, Colibri lighters need occasional maintenance to function at their peak.

There are a number of repairs you can make to your Colibri lighter to have it performing at its best. Return your Colibri Lighter to the manufacturer for certain repairs that are beyond your scope to fix. If an electrode in the lighter has fallen out of alignment, your Electro-Quartz component or burner has malfunctioned or you discover a leak in your lighter, return it to Colibri for proper repairs.

Bleed the air tank by opening the release valve for the butane in the lighter. Place the lighter in its original gift box, and place the gift box in a study cardboard box for shipping. Include in the box the warranty coupon or dated sales receipt; if your warranty has expired, you will be billed after service. Clean the burner if the lighter will not light or the flame is sputtering because of a dirty burner. This is often the cause of lighter malfunction if you have refilled the lighter fluid and the lighter still will not ignite. Hold the lighter horizontally, with the opening for the burner facing the tip of a can of compressed air. Keep the tip of the can at least one inch from the burner hole to avoid damaging the interior of the burner.

Spray three short bursts of compressed air into the lighter. This will clean any soot or other debris from the burner. Allow at least five minutes for the interior of the lighter to warm to room temperature before igniting. This process can be sped up by holding the lighter between your hands. Replace the flint in your Colibri lighter if the lighter will not spark because it is out of flint. Set the flame adjustment level as low as it can go so that you cannot accidentally activate the lighter while you perform the repair.

Open the flint chamber by either unscrewing the flint screw or sliding the flint plunger back; this will vary depending on the type of lighter you have. Tap the lighter gently on a firm surface, such as your hand or the edge of a table, to remove any remaining old flint for dust.

Slide the replacement flint into the chamber. Set the screw or plunger back into place. Activate the lighter; if it still will not spark after a few tries, open the lighter again and make sure the flint is in its proper place. Work in a well ventilated area to avoid breathing in fumes from lighter fluid. Set the flame adjustment to its lowest setting to be sure you cannot create a high flame accidentally while you are filling the lighter.

Hold the lighter upside down and place the tip of the nozzle of lighter fluid directly on the valve opening of the lighter. Press down for five seconds, and then release and check the fluid level. Our new search experience requires JavaScript to be enabled. Please enable JavaScript on your browserthen try again. If your lighter is not sparking properly and it is a quartz model, listen for the clicking that you normally hear when you light it.

If you don’t hear it, the lighter is not repairable–you will need to replace it. If you hear the sound but still receive no flame, check to see if it is sparking toward the butane release valve. Thread starter Peeejster Start date Mar 3, Peeejster New Member. So awhile back I came across a pair of Colibri lighters that had been pretty heavily used but still functioned for dirt cheap.

I used them both for a bit and eventually they both stopped working. I had intended to send them in for repairs in an envelope on my desk waiting to go to USPS and then I heard about the bankruptcy. Any ideas about another route to get them repaired?

How to Repair Colibri Lighters

I’m particularly concerned about this one because it may just need a new flint, i don’t know. The other lighter is a small cigarette lighter couldn’t find it online, but it’s basically a MUCH simpler version of this – no beam no fliptop non torchso I’m not as concerned about that one. It’s great for cigarillos but that’s about it. In fact, if anyone wants it let me know Anyway like I said before I’d like to have the other one repaired but don’t know where to turn.

It’s anyone’s guess. Lotus was in talks to carry on their warranty, but talks fell through and now there is no one who will be repairing Colibris. If you have a flint lighter, you probably only need a new flint. You can use any flint that fits These are their most dependable lighters. Take it apart and replace the flint.

You should be OK. I heard the same thing Israel did, Lotus was going to cover and now they aren’t. I was talking to someone the other day and they said nobody would be picking up warranty due to a high number of probable claims.

I would try and take it apart yourself, clean it and then replace the flint. You could probably even take it in to an old retailer and the could probably help you out as well.

Jimmyhaze Maduro Maniac. I was fowarded news that Xikar is setting up a deal with Colibri to offer warranty relief. Hope this is true. Jimmyhaze said:. If it were me I’d try to take it apart and fix it, but since you got it for dirt cheap I wouldn’t necessarily be upset if I couldn’t’ fix it.

Shaped into a small cylinder that fits into the flint tube of your lighter, the flint generates the spark that ignites the stream of butane gas or lighter fluid-soaked wick. Each strike rubs away a tiny piece of the flint, which is why after a few hundred strikes, the flint needs to be replaced. So how do you replace a flint? Here are some very short videos on how to do so on the most common flint-striker lighters available today. The first is the Alfred Dunhill Unique lighter and the flint is replaced the same way for the similar IM Corona lighters.

How does a turbo lighter work? | SECOND

A turbo lighter is a type of gas lighter that uses turbocharging of a gas-air mixture, which makes it possible to obtain a stable flame even with strong gusts of wind. Available in two versions:

  • classic, with flame upwards;
  • with side feed.

History of origin

The first model of a gas lighter was developed in 1823 by the German chemist Johann Döbereiner. It was not very convenient to operate, and it was expensive – hydrogen was used as fuel, and pure platinum was the catalyst for combustion.

Although ignition occurred automatically due to the catalytic effect of spongy platinum, however, the need to load chemical reagents (metallic zinc and concentrated acid) is a troublesome and dangerous business, which led to the fact that this design was quickly replaced by a more convenient gasoline lighter, and on for a century, the gas incendiary device was forgotten.

In the middle of the 20th century, a simple lighter was developed and introduced into industrial production, operating on liquefied petroleum gas (currently a mixture of butane, isobutane and propane is used). It was favorably received by consumers, as it did not emit an unpleasant gasoline smell and allowed a stronger flame to be obtained, with which it was possible to light cigars.

In the 70s, gas lighters began to be equipped with a piezoelectric element, thanks to which ignition was faster and easier than in devices with traditional “flint”.Finally, in 1986, the Japanese company Saroma developed the world’s first turbocharged lighter.

How does a turbo lighter

work

Turbo lighter is designed as follows: in the lower part there is a container with gas, which enters the turbine through a microscopic hole. At the same time, it expands and significantly increases the speed of movement. In the first stage, the combustible gas is mixed with a small amount of air, which is sucked in through the side holes.

The resulting mixture contains insufficient oxygen for ignition. At the outlet of the turbine, it is directed to the flame former, where it is mixed with another portion of air in a ratio sufficient for ignition. In the former, the flow is transferred from a laminar state to a turbulent one and is distributed over the volume of the chamber.

As a result, a fast-moving uniform flame is formed, the temperature of which can reach 1300 degrees. For its greater stability, a special refractory mesh is provided in some models. It heats up to a high temperature and, with a short interruption of the flame, reignites the gas-air mixture (such a flame is not sensitive to gusts of wind). Depending on the presence of alloying elements, such an insert can color the flame in blue, green, light yellow or burgundy.

Thus, the operation of the lighter in turbo mode allows it to be effectively used in gusts of wind up to 20 meters per second (very strong wind, 8 points on the Beaufort scale).

Scope of application

Due to the high temperature and flame stability, turbo lighters are used not only for lighting ordinary cigarettes and cigarettes, but also for lighting cigars, hookahs and bongs. They are also used for lighting fires and fireplaces, heating parts to be welded and soldered (in jewelry, radio engineering, etc.).

Purchase of a turbo lighter

On our website you will find models of lighters for every taste. If you need to light conventional cigarettes, pay attention to the top-fire designs – they are compact and reliable. If there is a need to light a hookah or heat non-combustible materials, then think about the possibility of purchasing a turbo lighter with a side flame – they are more convenient for such operations.

In addition, evaluate where you will use the device: in a home environment, the presence of a plastic case vulnerable to scratches is not critical, at the same time, more reliable metal specimens are preferred during a hike.

In the secunda.com.ua catalog you will always find a suitable copy that meets aesthetic and practical needs – make a choice and place an order.

90,000 Articles about Zippo «ZippoCollector.ru

Many of us have always been interested and are interested in the question of the coating of Zippo lighters and the methods of applying decor to their body. The topic is, in fact, interesting and entertaining, so our portal ZippoCollector.ru decided to make a small “guide” on this issue.

In general, the coating of Zippo lighters has always amazed my imagination, so this is a vast topic.Of course, it’s basically impossible to find an accurate description on the Internet, it’s easier to go to Bradford and ask around the employees of the Zippo factory! Therefore, on the topic of the material from which Zippos are made, one can only speak relatively, making guesses and putting forward various hypotheses. Likewise, it is impossible to cover each coverage individually. We all perfectly understand how many Zippo lighters have been produced from 1933 to this day. We sometimes do not know about the existence of many models in principle. But I will try to cover the most important thing in this review and supplement this material as new coatings appear.

I think most of us know that 90% of Zippo lighters are made from thin sheets of brass. If this is a model, Solid Brass , then, as a rule, its native metal color is golden. Historically, such a coating has not been justified in any way, models Solid Brass on an ongoing basis as serial models began to be produced since 1983.

It’s a different story when we see a Zippo of the usual metallic color. This does not mean that unlike the gold-colored Brass model, the metallic-colored Zippo is made of a different metal, by no means. You just take the same Solid Brass model and undergo a special treatment – first nickel plating (nickel plating is the surface treatment of products by applying a nickel plating on them, the thickness of the applied coating is usually from 1 to 50 microns; as a rule, metal products made of steel or other metals and alloys, in particular copper, zinc, aluminum, less often manganese, titanium, tungsten or molybdenum), and then chrome plating – according to the deposition of a nickel layer on the surface, a layer of chromium.Typically, this process is carried out by immersing the body of the lighter in an electroplating bath.
Of course, if we are talking about an ordinary classic chrome case, we cannot fail to mention the variations of the case surface itself. When we browse various Zippo models on the pages of online stores and catalogs, we can see the following descriptions: Street Chrome, Brushed Chrome, Solid Brass, Black Ice, Black, Green, Pink Matte, High Polish, Satin Chrome, etc.And what, in fact, are these terms? It sometimes seems to many that we are talking about the description of the case material, however, in fact, this is just a type of case coating, that is, various variations in the surface treatment of the case, and not variations in the metal from which the case is made.

Let’s start to understand in turn, but here the description is based on the sensations that this or that surface causes, because to say for sure how EXACTLY this or that variation of the surface is achieved, that is, how, by what means, perhaps no one will tell us …In principle, the most common types of classic Zippo coatings are as follows.

Brushed Chrome – brushed surface, roughly speaking, in the form of longitudinal scratches. Probably one of the most common and oldest coatings appeared on Zippo lighters in 1937.

Herringbone Sweep, Diagonal Weave, Arch, Linen Weave – very similar to Brushed Chrome options for abrasive treatment of the case (grinding with abrasive materials, for example, sand or diamond grit) with different direction of the stripes, the pattern is more pronounced, creates a pleasant gradation on the surface of the case shades and a graceful play of light and shadow.

High Polish Crome – polished surface, very often it is for some reason confused with Brushed Chrome surface. By the way, do not forget that it is also possible to cover High Polish Brass , if we are talking about a Zippo model of “golden” color, and High Polish Sterling Silver , if we are talking about silver Zippos. The High Polish coating is, so to speak, somewhat solemn in nature.

A shiny, smooth, seemingly even sliding coating can immediately attract the eye with its solid appearance!

Polishing is the treatment of the metal surface, which is carried out after grinding or electroplating. Thanks to metal polishing, micro-irregularities on the surface of the product are eliminated. During manual polishing, the paste is applied to felt and made circular movements on the surface of the product. Mechanical polishing is carried out with polishing wheels made of felt or cotton fabrics lubricated with a paste.

Grinding is a metal surface treatment that involves the machining of the metal to remove significant irregularities prior to polishing. For grinding metals, abrasive materials of natural origin or artificial ones are used, depending on the hardness of the material of the product.Hard grinding materials – corundum and carborundum – are used for grinding hardened steel, manganese bronze, etc. Emery is used to grind ferrous and non-ferrous metals; crocus (iron oxide) or powder pumice – brass, zinc, aluminum; polishing or Viennese lime – soft metals and alloys. Chromium oxide has good polishing properties, therefore it is used for polishing hard and soft metals.

So, to summarize, grinding and polishing are not the same thing, but different metal surface treatment procedures preceding one another.Accordingly, Brushed – brushed surface, Polish – polished.

Street Chrome and Street Brass – one of the most “unpretentious” surfaces. Officially produced by Zippo since 2001.

Many Zippo users prefer to buy these “everyday” models. This is justified by its very high durability when it comes to the surface performance of the lighter. After even a long time of using such a model, there are usually no special signs of wear. However, again, let’s not forget that a lot depends on the owner himself. Of course, if you run the surface of the lighter over stones or a brick wall, you will hardly be able to maintain a flawlessly new and immaculate look.

Satin Chrome is a very special treatment, the surface is as if it were all in the smallest points. Something like velvet. Very pleasant to the touch.Officially produced by Zippo since 1999.

Well, it’s probably not for nothing that it’s called satin. What is satin – polishing technology (Italian. Satinatura – polishing, glossing). A kind of polishing. It is carried out with special brushes with diamond bristles, which allows to achieve the effect of a matte, polished, slightly “aged” surface.

Next, what you should pay attention to is such a word as Solid . For example, Solid Brass .This means that the model is made of pure brass without any alloys of brass with other metals. Let’s reveal a little secret. Logically speaking, under any model with a chrome finish, there is nothing more than Solid Brass. So basically any chrome-plated Zippo is actually a regular brass Zippo.

Zippo Solid Copper (English copper – red copper) – this means that this Zippo model is made of pure red copper (99.9%), without any alloys with other metals.Regular production 2001 – 2008

Zippo Solid Titanium – a completely pure titanium case, not an alloy! In the entire history of Zippo, only one such model was released in 2001 under the number 110. The full name is Zippo 110 Solid Titanium .

But! If you look at the sites of Japanese Zippos, you can find a whole series of lighters with the following description – Titanium Coated .

So that’s it! Not to be confused, these are regular Zippos with a thin titanium coating, while the Zippo Solid Titanium is all made of pure titanium.

At one time, the Zippo company attempted to release a series of aluminum lighters, but we will somehow talk about aluminum Zippo in a separate review. The main thing here I want to mention is that the company used anodized coating technology, as well as aluminum sputtering technology. A similar coating is applied to the Solid Titanium model.

If suddenly someday you see a Zippo, which has a stamp not only on the bottom, but also on the lid, do not be alarmed! This is a special Zippo series called Bottomz Up , which has a stamp not only on the bottom, like any other Zippo, but also on the top of the lid, where you can see a characteristic badge indicating that this lighter is from Bottomz Up series. The model was released in 2008.

Zippo Solid Gold – I think there is no doubt about it. Solid gold lighter body, typically 18K Gold (equivalent to 750 carat) for modern models.

Zippo Sterling – from English, the word Sterling is translated as silver of the highest standard. However, to say that the case is made of pure silver is also not entirely true. Sterling (English Sterling [silver]) – the name of an alloy of 92.5% and above silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper (925 sterling silver and above).Sterling 999 sterling silver is too soft for making large objects, so it is usually alloyed with copper to give strength while preserving the ductility and beauty of the noble metal.

As a ligature instead of copper or together with it, attempts were made to use other metals to improve quality – to reduce porosity, increase wear resistance, to tint color, eliminate blackening. For these purposes, germanium, zinc and platinum, titanium were used, as well as various additions – silicon, boron. However, the copper alloy remains the de facto standard.
Obviously, that’s why we can’t say Solid Silver – silver models are called Sterling.

Silver Plate – silver plated body surface. Silver plating is applied by electroplating (applying silver to the surface of another metal using electrolysis). Initially, Silver Plate models were usually labeled with the appropriate lettering on the bottom of the lighter. But, for example, modern Japanese models are not marked with such stamps. The presence of silver on their surface is indicated only in the certificate inserts.

Misty Silver – The silver-plated surface of the case is sandblasted, then covered with a protective layer of lacquer.

Gold Filled – gold-plated (gold-plated), usually marked with the inscription “10K Gold Filled or G.F.”

Gold Plate – electroplated body, as indicated only in the name of the lighter or in the accompanying insert.Gold plating is applied by electroplating (applying gold to the surface of another metal using electrolysis).

Gold Dust is a graceful gold understudy for the Street finish. The case is immersed in gold, after which the surface is slightly textured. This is one of the most luxurious and expensive finishes in the Zippo collection, with a special texture and volume of perception. For the first time, the cover was published in 2001.

Zippo Rose Gold – looks more pink compared to Gold Dust.Similarly, the brass case is nickel-plated and covered with a thin layer of a mixture of metals (75% gold plating and 25% copper plating), such a coating does not have a “sour” smell when compared to Copper. It is not subject to oxidation and darkening.

Consider a series of Zippo lighters Antique Antique Brass , Antique Copper and Antique Silver

From the name of the series it is clear that “antique” is something antique and old. These lighters are specially coated to make the lighter look old, going through fire, water and copper pipes. But, at the same time, the usual brass Zippo is hidden behind this coating, it will be noticeable after intensive use, when the outer coating begins to peel off. Accordingly, Antique Silver is made under vintage silver, Antique Copper under red copper, Antique Brass under vintage brass classic Zippo. The cover appeared in 1994.

The prototype of this series is the Zippo Sunrise series.

Same idea – Zippo Silver Sunrise, Zippo Brass Sunrise, Zippo Copper Sunrise . Only here the coating is already done not “antique”, as in the antique series, but more in a modern and “avant-garde” style. The result is a very beautiful series with interesting and unusual body coatings.

Zippo Midnight Chrome – models with such an interesting finish have been produced since 1992. The elegant coating consisted of a chrome-plated lighter body covered with a special darkened varnish, which looked very new and unusual in those days.In this coating, two versions of the model were made: High Polish and Brush Finish.

We will not dwell in detail on the models of the Armor series (reinforced, the walls of the case increased by 1.5 times), you can read about them here.

Let’s move on to the consideration of coatings “colored” Zippo. For example, Zippo ( Green, Royal Blue, Lemon Lime, Blueberry, Black, Carnation, Pink, Purple , Red, Navy etc.) Matte .

The word Matte means matt surface in this context. An ordinary brass zippo is taken and covered with a layer of paint of one color or another. Accordingly, these are not watercolors or gouache, but a specially applied powder coating by sintering. Of course, there can be no question of any red or black metal, for example. For clarity, I will give an example of a “black” Zippo:

As you can see, if you look from the inside at the lighter’s lid, you can see the yellowness, nothing more than the color of the metal from which the body is made.

Since the stamp on the bottom of the lighter is its integral part to determine the authenticity, since 2003, Zippo began to specifically remove the layer of “paint” from the bottom of the lighter using laser technology on all Matte models, so that the user could easily see the information that it carries stamp

Standing apart from Mate are the original finishes Mercury Glass and Iron Stone .

The first Mercury Glass has a matte finish with a mother-of-pearl gloss, a mixture of an ostrich egg and the contents of a Petri dish :), a smooth light surface is dotted with small structural craters – “pockmarks”.The effect is amazing.

Second model Iron Stone , a striking opposite of the first. External brutality looks only from the outside. The lighter won’t scratch your hands or wipe your pockets. A smooth matte surface only creates the effect of a structured stone and gives a barely noticeable highlight.

The “grandfather” of the previous coatings is rightfully the Vein series. In 2002, three unusual finishes were introduced: Gold Rush, Silver Vein and Penny Vein .The coating itself with the so-called. structural “hammer effect” looks quite interesting. But, unfortunately, this finish of the case did not receive recognition from fans of Zippo (we got the nickname “doors”) and two years later, in 2004, they were discontinued.

Now let’s talk about such models as: Zippo Candy Apple Red, Zippo Cool Kiwi and Zippo Purple Shimmer :

Models appeared in 2006. In this case, we are dealing again with “colored” Zippos, but the surface of these lighters, alas, cannot be called matte. Here the technology PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition; abbreviated as PVD) – spraying by condensation from the vapor (gas) phase has already been used. The next year, 2007, three more models were added, coated with the same technology – Toffee, Candy Raspberry, Candy Teal .

And it all began in 2002, when PVD technology was presented at the next congress of collectors and lovers of Zippo in honor of the celebration of Zippo Day. At the same time, models from the Spectrum series were shown, the coating of which was carried out using this technology.Spectrum is a very beautiful coating, something associated with a “chameleon”. Apparently the rich color range makes itself felt.

A little later, in 2004 came out: Mood Indigo , Sapphire and Harvest Bronze :

Our favorite Black Ice coating was also applied using PVD technology.
Zippo Black Ice is a rather beautiful and original coating, which, in fact, can “play” depending on the lighting. On the one hand, it is black, but, on the other hand, it is shiny, mirrored, and can therefore sparkle. It turns out a kind of mixture in the form of black mirror toning. Over time, when the coating wears off, its charm is not lost, but begins a new cycle and appears in a different light!

What is PVD technology? PVD is the treatment of a metal surface in a vacuum environment by exposing it to molecules of other metals to obtain a particularly durable and hard surface of the product.Titanium and zirconium are mainly used for the PVD process. The PVD method can be applied to a variety of materials, including stainless steel and brass. The steel blank is first carefully polished and then PVD-treated. The brass product is nickel-plated beforehand, then chrome-plated and only then PVD-coating is applied.
The main value of PVD technology lies in the ability to modify the surface properties of a product without affecting the properties and biochemical functionality of the base material. The PVD coating is extremely tight and evenly adheres to the base, does not contain microcracks, is a protective layer that is resistant to abrasion and scratches. The surface treatment process is as follows: in a closed vacuum chamber, zirconium molecules “bombard” the metal surface and are distributed among its molecules under the influence of high pressure and temperature (up to 1200 ° C). Then, within 30 minutes, the metal gradually solidifies. The combination of vacuum action and the hardening process makes it possible to obtain a coating that will already have qualitatively different characteristics.

PVD surface resistant to scratches, impacts and mechanical stress. Too heavy mechanical loads can lead to mechanical deformations of the material, but at the same time its characteristics, including surface strength properties, will remain unchanged.
According to the description of the catalog, this technology of applying a kind of “transparent layer” to the surface of the lighter. And indeed, if you look closely, this is nothing but the finest spraying on the Zippo body!

Zippo Black Licorice , if we turn to this model, here, in fact, a translucent layer has already been applied to the surface of the lighter.

Zippo Glow In The Dark – is covered with luminescent paint, which accumulates light energy from the sun or other bright light sources and, at nightfall, gently gives off the accumulated light in the form of a greenish glow.

Zippo Rose Gold (PVD) – is a PVD coating in the style of the classic Rose Gold model.

New for 2021 with beautiful and unusual PVD coatings that change their color shades depending on the lighting: Iridescent, High Polish Teal, and : Brown and Purple Matte :

I would also like to talk about the coating Crackle .

During the Second World War, the Zippo plant switched to the production of lighters from steel, since all other metals were considered strategic and were used only for military needs. Almost 100% of Zippo products were sold to the US Armed Forces. Steel was used in the production of Zippo until 1945 inclusive. Lighters of this period were painted with black paint, and after that the paint was baked, forming the so-called Black Crackle – a black spider-web pattern, or craquelure. This was done so that the metal surface of the lighter did not glare, thereby giving enemy snipers a convenient opportunity to fire.

This coating should not be confused with a Matte coating. In fact, of course, the principle is the same, and there, and there paint. Only if it is Matte, then it is a smoother surface, while Crackle, on the contrary, is a rougher and rougher surface. As a rule, the Black Crackle models were the main Zippo lighters during the Second World War (and, by the way, the same coating was made at that time on a dozen other brands of lighters).

Here is a macro photo of a Matawan lighter with the same Crackle finish. It doesn’t matter that this is not Zippo, the essence is the same and the main thing that I want to draw your attention to is the coating itself. The most amazing shot allows you to see everything in the finest details, including the so-called “spider web” itself:

Very beautiful coating, but certainly not eternal. Here is an example of a Zippo from the Second World War. Once upon a time it was our beloved Zippo Black Crackle, but over time the paint peeled off and this “naked” steel Zippo remained:

Today Crackle models, but already in various colors, can be found in the original version, etc.hours in the Japanese market Zippo. Zippo Cashmere Crackle in a color similar to Matte Cream, but in the “processing” of Crackle and Zippo Chocolate Crackle – , alas, is not an edible chocolate bar.

This model is truly a collector’s item. There is something unusual about it, as in: Green Crackle, Red Crackle and Blue Crackle:

Let’s get away from the topic a little and talk about some of the features of the body itself, or rather its material.
In addition to the metal coating of the housings, in 1950. Zippo has produced leather-coated lighters in different colors Calf (calfskin) and Morocco (English morocco). Today, these models can be found at various auctions, they are quite rare and cost accordingly in view of the fact that they cannot be called banal and mass models. They, in turn, were divided into models that were completely covered with leather:

And in 1952 they began to produce models that were partially covered with leather.Models also had names: Reptile (Reptile) and Morocco (English Morocco) – depending on the finish:

From 1972 to 1986, models of Zippo WOODGRAIN lighters with vinyl wood-look lighters were produced.

And in 2020 an interesting series of Zippo WOODCHUCK USA Wrapped Wood Emblems came out, literally wrapped in wood, with intricate patterns made using laser engraving:

The Zippo Denim with denim on a chrome case was officially released in 1976.

In the period 1951 – the end of 1953. Zippo switched back to making lighters from steel during the war between North and South Korea, during which the United States sided with South Korea.

And in 2020 there was a limited anniversary lighter made of steel: Replica 1941, dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II:

In the early 1980s Zippo models from the Ultralite series were popular:

These were the usual Zippo Polish Chrome models with four plastic double-sided covers in different colors, on which the image was respectively applied. You can read more about the models in this series here.

Models Zippo Golden Tortoise appeared in 1977 and outwardly resembled the later Ultralite models, but with a gold-plated case and with overlays stylized as a turtle shell.

Another series of Zippo lighters, which have an incomplete metal coating – Zippo Scrimshaw .

They began to appear around the same years as the Ultralite series. The image is applied to the acrylic surface of the lighter, which covers the body.

One of the coatings for Zippo lighters is an enamelled surface. We all remember the amazing beauty of the Zippo Kelvinator in the shape of a small white refrigerator. So, its surface is nothing more than enamel.

In principle, we have considered the most basic issues of the material and coating of the case. We will gradually move on to the features of applying the “decor”. If we think logically, then we will not meet any overly intricate and complex methods on the way to the truth. When it comes to serial models, and therefore about large-scale production, the most “traditional” methods of image application are usually used here, namely engraving and “thermal printing” (in common people – “prints” ).

The pattern is applied both to various colored coatings (Mate, etc.) and chrome-plated (Brushed, Polish, Satin, etc.) cases. This is where the “thermal printing” technology was used. To the touch, you can clearly feel that the drawing is applied over the body, despite the fact that in the photographs everything looks somewhat different.

Zippo’s proprietary thermal printing technology Fusion – creates unique color palettes that combine with chrome inserts to create an iridescent look reminiscent of stained glass. The combination of predefined color palettes and chrome accents creates an iridescent metallic look. A very beautiful technology that looks much better in “live” than in the photo.

Engraving is another matter. Here the image or the inscription is applied by automatic mechanical engraving in the case itself, and not on top of its coating.A very durable and practical way to apply images to the body of a Zippo lighter.

There is, of course, another way of engraving – hand engraving. For example, the Zippo during the Vietnam War. We all know very well that Zippo lighters were sometimes the only piece of “paper” on which soldiers could express their feelings, thoughts and experiences. Like this Zippo, which is engraved – “Please! Don’t tell me about Vietnam, because I was there. ”

At the present stage, hand engraving is an expensive process and is used, as a rule, on exclusive and limited editions of Zippo.

In 1974, Zippo launched the Venetian series, engraved with a variety of smooth, straight and curved Venetian-style designs. More than three decades later, the Venetian series is replenished with more and more new items, attracting the attention of not only lovers of lighters, but also connoisseurs of beauty, so to speak aesthetes. Each Venetian lighter is decorated with patterns on both sides.

In 2003, the company changed the method of drawing the drawing Venetian from mechanical to laser, as a result of which the drawing lost its bright structuring and turned out to be smoother.

Masterpieces by Paul Fleming and Claudio Mazzi are another prime example of custom work on Zippo lighters. Yes, here we are talking about handmade, individual orders from collectors are also possible. But accordingly, the works of these masters are very expensive copies, so we are not talking about mass production. Many of the works of these masters are one of a kind. But, nevertheless, we should bear in mind that there are similar ways of applying decor to the Zippo case.As an example, there is also the original coating “Champagne ” on the Zippo 24079 Mazzi Marsh Landing Champagne .

On these lighters, the image is applied a little unusual, namely from the inside of the case, so the drawing becomes, as it were, convex, which makes it look interesting and original:

Do not forget about the Zippo Town and Country series of lighters. As a rule, this is also a kind of manual work, namely, manual painting of the image followed by heating the paints.

One way to apply images to the body is the Trench-Art technique. Here we can talk about both hand-made homemade engraving, and about gluing various overlays, crosses, medallions, coins to the Zippo case, which, in turn, also carry some kind of image. Some of these examples are not that cheap, mostly, of course, these are vintage wartime lighters.

Among the modern serial Zippo models, there are also lighters with “linings” , but made not independently, but directly at the Zippo factory.Cover plates made of various metals: pewter, brass, copper and even aluminum

So also from various natural materials: stone, wood, and even shells:

Usually these models differ in weight. They are heavier than classic models without “overlays” and have a more dull click when closing and opening the lighter.

Zippo 360 ° MultiCut ® is a unique circular engraving technology. Produced by deep mechanical engraving (or combined with laser processing) on Armor cases:

Zippo 360 ° Photo Image Design – MultiCut® technology on classic lighter models using circular continuous laser engraving:

Technology Zippo 540 ° Color – allows you to completely cover the lighter with a unique design, the area of the hinges and the bottom stamp is laser treated to provide the best performance and easy identification of the date and month of production of the lighter.

Models made with 540 ° Color – immersive, bright designs with a long-lasting coating – this is a new frontier of unprecedented possibilities in lighter decoration.

Now let’s dwell on the curious Zippo Realtree ® series.

The surface of the lighters of this series has the so-called “camouflage image”, since it was assumed that such Zippos would appeal to lovers of hunting and outdoor trips.Branches, leaves, various shadows, stems, tree trunks are depicted on “three-dimensional” pictures with a sufficiently high degree of detail and clarity in accordance with the technology High Definition – high resolution. Sometimes the image can “play” depending on the lighting, which makes the lighters of this series very interesting specimens.

And finally, although this does not quite relate to this topic, but still remember the model Zippo Lossproof – Zippo, protected from loss.

That is, of course, this does not mean that you will never be able to lose it in your life. It’s just that a special loop is attached to it, which is wrapped around the lace. Thus, you can wrap your wrist with this lace and not part with your beloved Zippo!

Well, one more of the standout models – Zippo Zip Guard . A distinctive feature of this model is the presence of a kind of rubber “armor” of various colors.

The regular model of Brushed Chrome is protected by an original “shell”, which, in the event of a lighter falling, can take the entire blow, thereby softening an unsuccessful “landing”.This coating is made for the convenience of gripping the lighter in your hands.

Zippo Contempo – butane Zippos of the last century model

In the next anniversary year, Zippo fans are waiting for surprises and news from the company-anniversary. Remember how five years ago, on its 75th birthday, Zippo MFG blew up the world with the premiere of Zippo Blue, a conceptually new gas lighter? And how many people know that Zippo Blu is not the first experience of the company in the production of butane lighters? The first steps in this direction were taken back in 1985, when Zippo Contempo was introduced to the world market. It was a butane lighter with a completely non-standard shape and design for Zippo. By the way, the design was also patented (filed December 10, 1984, patent received June 3, 1986, U.S. Patent Number D284,113). The inventor of this lighter is a certain Lutrelle P. Wassmann.
In September 1985, the Zippo Contempo was introduced to the general public. To promote the new product to the market, a separate catalog was released, in which all 9 models were presented. More precisely, all 27, tk. each model was available in standard, trim, and standard models were available in tube versions.

In the 1985 catalog, Zippo Contempo was positioned as a new collection of lighters designed for a new generation. “Contempo lighters say a lot about their owners – they are people who know what they want and how to get it, who will not be content with little and only get the best.”

9 models differed from each other in the finish of the case, and also the ignition wheel (chair) was different in different models. Let’s take a closer look at each of the models.

1.Models 716 and 1416 – tortoise standard and tortoise trim look like this. Gold color, ribbed body, burgundy brown spotted inserts. Pay attention to the wheel chair – it is located on the right side of the body

2 and 3. The burgundy (714.1414) and basic black (715.1415) models look the same. The only difference is in the color of the inserts. We will not insert photographs of narrow models, because they are all alike.

4 and 5. But the gold models called gold mesh (“gold mesh”, numbers – 712 and 1412) and burnished gold (“Polished gold”, 713, 1413), although built on the same principle, but look completely different. This is a real piece of jewelry – exquisite, expensive, for connoisseurs of luxury.

Here, by the way, is an interesting example – Zippo Contempo burnished gold with the House of Representatives sign (House of Representatives in the US Congress). Butane lighters were engraved as often and skillfully as regular gasoline Zippos. The 1988 catalog even emphasized the service of applying images using engraving technology.

6 and 7. There are also silver lighters in the Zippo Contempo collection. These are bright chrome (“smooth chrome” – 701,1401) and fluted chrome (“fluted chrome” – 702, 1402). Please note that the wheel chair looks a little differently for these and golden models.

8 and 9. Two more models are presented in the form of “louver” – “blinds”. These Contempo have vertical stripes and are available in gold (711, 1411) and silver (703.1403).
These are 9 beauties, for every taste and for every style. As for the pipe lighters, they were practically no different from the standard Contempo, with the exception of a tiny detail, an elongated, bent nozzle, thanks to which the flame is higher and more directed. The picture shows the difference between a nozzle in a regular lighter and a pipe lighter.
Surely attentive readers have already noticed that there are no usual Zippo stamps on the bottom of these lighters. Indeed, on Contempo you will find only two markers – the name Zippo and the word Japan. And no other dating. What does Japan have to do with it, you ask, and where is the mention of the familiar Bradford? And despite the fact that the gas zippos were going there, in the Land of the Rising Sun.

Like all other Zippos, the Zippo Contempo comes with a lifetime warranty. However, this warranty cost the manufacturers too much. Perhaps this was one of the reasons why the production of butane Zippos was phased out already in 1992. Another reason is low consumer demand. Butane lighters were too expensive (see photo below), especially compared to regular Zippos, which were 3-4 times cheaper (for example, Zippo High Polish Chrome cost only $ 9.5).

Fortunately, the second attempt in 2007 proved to be more successful, and today fans of gas lighters have the opportunity to enjoy the flames of the graceful Zippo Blu.And collectors have a great direction to work with, because Zippo Contempo has already become real rarities.

Zippo maintenance on your own – zipporu – LiveJournal

No matter how durable and reliable the Zippo lighter is, some of its parts need to be replaced periodically simply due to their natural wear and tear. The filter gradually burns out, the flint is erased, and fuel, of course, is consumed most actively. We decided to devote today’s article to consumables associated with Zippo lighters.

Fuel

Any lighter needs refueling. Even if you refueled your Zippo a month ago and have only used it a few times since then, sooner or later you will find that there is no fuel left in the tank. The fact is that Zippo fuel is a distillate of oil that tends to evaporate over time. Therefore, even an unused lighter will gradually empty. To slow down the evaporation process, do not hold the lighter near heat sources or in the sun, and keep the lid tightly closed.

If the lighter is actively used, then you will need to refuel it somewhere after every 200-300 ignition. How much fuel consumption will be depends on how often you use the lighter and how long it stays lit.

What kind of fuel should you use to fuel your Zippo? – Of course, it is best to take the branded, Zippo Premium Lighter for regular lighters and Zippo Premium Butane for gas Zippos Blue. It is designed taking into account all the design features of these lighters and will provide a guaranteed result. If you are having trouble finding branded fuels, go for Ronson or any other premium fuel. Resist the temptation to save money and buy cheap goods from unknown Chinese manufacturers, because such fuels often contain unwanted additives that can cause malfunctions of the lighter and even void the warranty.

How to refuel a lighter?

Refueling a classic lighter and refueling a Zippo Blu lighter are slightly different from each other.Let’s consider both of these processes.

To fill with butane Zippo BLU you need:

  • Turn the lighter so that the filling valve located in the center of the bottom is at the top;
  • Place the fuel canister nozzle in the filling valve, making sure it is firmly seated;
  • squeeze the canister with several sharp, confident movements, filling the tank with fuel;
  • turn the lighter over, returning it to its normal position, and wait at least a couple of minutes before use so that the fuel stabilizes and the vapors dissipate.

At the same time, make sure that there is no butane leakage, and that the fuel does not come into contact with the skin, because, reacting with air, it becomes scalding cold.

If after refueling the lighter still does not burn, it is possible that a so-called vapor lock has formed, i.e. Air bubbles have entered the sealed fuel tank. This happens, for example, if the lighter is not turned over before refueling.

To remove the vapor plug, turn the lighter over and bleed off excess air by pressing the inlet valve with the tip of a small screwdriver or other sharp object.Be extremely careful during this operation. When done, move the lighter away from your face and sources of fire and refuel it with Zippo fuel.

To refuel the regular windproof Zippo , proceed as follows:

  • remove the insert (indoor unit) from the case, turn it over;
  • at the bottom of the insert you will find a white felt pad. Fold back its corner to gain access to the filler in the fuel tank;
  • Take the insert in one hand and hold the fuel canister with the other.Turn the canister over and, while squeezing it, slowly fill the reservoir. Continue until the cotton balls inside are soaked in fuel;
  • do not overfill the tank, otherwise fuel will flow out of the lighter;
  • Avoid getting fuel on your skin as it can cause irritation;
  • after filling, insert the insert back into the body;
  • Make sure that there are no drops of fuel on the surface of the lighter, on the table or on your hands, and only then can you use the lighter.

The first time after refueling, we do not recommend carrying a lighter in your pocket, or at least make sure that it is not upside down. This is a precaution in case you do overdo it with fuel and it will leak a little.

Flints

Flints are another consumable item that must be replaced periodically. In Zippo BLU lighters, during normal use, they should be changed about once a month, in classic Zippos – a little more often, about once every 3-4 weeks. The signal for replacement should be the state when the flint no longer sparks or strikes, but not on the first try.

Replacement of flint is carried out as follows:

In Zippo Blu:

  1. Without trying to reach the indoor unit (it cannot be removed in these lighters), pull up the flint wheel cartridge. To do this, grab the wheel chair and pull it up with force.
  2. Turn the cartridge over and unscrew the screw using a thin screwdriver or a coin.Make sure that the released spring does not fly off to the side.
  3. Remove the remnants of the old flint and insert a new one in its place.
  4. Replace the screw and insert the cartridge (the toothed side must face the torch).

In classic windproof zippos:

  1. Remove the insert from the housing and turn it over.
  2. Remove the screw holding the flint spring. Be careful – the spring can pop out quite abruptly.
  3. Turn the insert over to its normal position and tap it lightly on a hard surface to shake out the remnants of the old flint.
  4. Insert a new flint, replace the spring and tighten the screw.
  5. Insert the insert into the body.

Wick

Windproof lighters also contain a consumable item such as a wick. It is shortened rather slowly, but still requires periodic updating. When the wick in your lighter needs replacing, simply grasp it with pliers and pull.Pull until the clean wick is level with the windshield and then trim. You can pull the wick out of the case twice, and then you need to replace it with a new one.

How the wick is replaced:

  1. Remove the insert from the case, turn it over
  2. Remove the felt pad and use tweezers to remove all filler from the fuel tank.
  3. Insert the new wick from above by pushing it through the windshield and pulling it down with tweezers.
  4. Fill the reservoir with small pieces of cotton wool with a snake wick between them.
  5. Replace the felt pad and insert the insert into the housing.

As for the rest of the Zippo lighter – flint wheel, felt gasket, flint spring, fuel tank filler – you won’t find them on sale. But, as the manufacturer himself promises, if there is a need to replace any of these components, you can write a request through the contact form on the official website and get the required part for free.Plus, you can always send your lighter to a zippo shop for warranty service.

Honest One Torch Flame Windproof Jet Butane Cigar Lighter Gray with Keychain
I have a favorite Chinese company whose products I take almost without fear. Among them is the HONEST company. I have already bought a dozen different lighters from this company – everyone was pleased with the quality and durability. A new piece in my collection is no exception.

The product is made soundly, and the quality factor starts from the packaging.

This is a box made of thick cardboard, additionally hidden in another one that can be moved, obviously so that the main one does not lose its presentation.
And it performs its function as seen in the photo.

Inside the cardboard box there is an anti-damp gel and instructions that are completely useless, but the very fact of its presence speaks in favor of the manufacturer.

Complete with lighter storage pouch. A very useful thing, in such a case from the previous lighter I carry a card reader and even small things, it is more convenient than catching in a loose bag in my pocket. The bag is understandably made of artificial material, but nothing crumbles or stinks, it is sewn quite efficiently and from a fairly thick fabric.

The lighter itself has a metal body and all its parts are made of metal, at least those outside. This is indirectly evidenced by the weight of the product, because it lies heavily in the hand, pleasantly.
The lighter arrived completely uncharged, which is understandable – the limitation of postage. After refueling with an ordinary standard canister, it immediately started working.

The design feature of the lighter is in the presence of two nozzles, why two – xs, maybe to facilitate lighting in the wind, or maybe this is a feature for lighting cigars just such a purpose, judging by the name. There are two nozzles as mentioned above, one piezo for ignition located between them.
By the way, I checked it – it ignites and keeps the fire in the wind well. Which is obviously facilitated by the fact that this is a gas turbo lighter. It lights up with one click when you press the button located on the opposite side of the case, with practically no idle operations.

The second feature of the lighter is the specific design of the upper part in the form of a “spout” which, when pressed, folds up but not completely and the burner itself is still inside the body, which is also obviously well thought-out protection from the wind. When the button is released, the spout automatically lowers back – there is a spring inside the body. With frequent use, this spring may become a weak point. While my hundred plus clicks did not affect my work in any way – everything works clearly.

On the lower end of the lighter there is a traditional charging hole with a nipple and a regulator recessed into the body by turning the amount of supplied gas / flame length.
Next to it is a mount rotating around the axis on which the carabiner is suspended by means of a ring. The most common one as on key chains. Completely redundant as for me, but easily replaced by another one if necessary. Obviously no loss.

On both sides of the body there is a decorative groove and a rounded recess, on one of them is the name of the manufacturer HONEST.Quite nice and yet practical design.
Among the shortcomings, there is probably an increased gas consumption and heating of the case – after all, there are two torches, others were not noticed.
Although I do not smoke myself and I do not advise you, I carry a lighter with me – an atavism from ancient times. In general, a very good lighter, a good gift for a smoker and just a friend. Anyone who needs and likes the design can safely take it – I recommend buying …
Added photos of burning. Poor quality of daytime shooting by phone and rising hot air …
