Wondering where to buy a bullet journal? If you’re anything like me, you looked high and low for a bullet journal at your local stores and could not find one. Not only could I not find the infamous Leuchturm 1917, but I couldn’t even find a dotted notebook of any size.  It was so frustrating!

I’m still puzzled as to why more stores haven’t caught up to this trend and started keeping dotted notebooks on their shelves but the good news is you can still get them, it just takes a little more effort sometimes.

 

For me, the best place to find a bullet journal is… you guessed it, Amazon! Amazon pretty much carries all of the best bullet journals and then some. So you’ll have your pick of colors, price and more.

Minimalism Art Dotted Notebook  – another up and coming favorite among bullet journalists

You can get a really awesome selection through their site and get your bullet journal in almost any color imaginable. And you know, sometimes some brush pens and washi tape sneak into my cart as well. I’ve just accepted that’s going to happen from time to time.

Where to Buy a Bullet Journal in a Store

My other new favorite place to buy them is Michael’s. Through their Artist Loft collection they’ve come out with a range of new notebooks that have everything from lined and graph paper to dotted. They’re not the original, but they are pretty dang good! 

Target also typically carries a couple of different brands of dotted journal, and I’ve noticed the stores pretty regularly carry the Moleskine dot grid journal.

Thanks to a comment below, I also learned Walmart now carries dot grid bullet journals in a variety of sizes.

Questions to think about when choosing a bullet journal:

What size bullet journal should I get?

Bullet journals range in a wide variety of sizes from mini approximately 3 x 4” to large 8 x 10” (nearly the size of a sheet of paper).

However, when choosing the right size for you, it’s important to consider your lifestyle.

Do you like to travel light and keep a bullet journal in your back pocket? Consider a mini or pocket size bujo.

If you like to plan at a desk and your bullet journal won’t be moving very often, you may want a large notebook. This size notebook is also handy if you are going to use it to take notes or you have a lot of information you need to get on a single page.

By far, the most popular size bullet journal is a medium also known as an A5 notebook. It’s a great size for most people because it provides a good amount of space for writing yet it’s sized perfectly for a backpack, computer bag, handbag, or tote.

A5 is my personal favorite because I like to carry my bullet journal EVERYWHERE. I tried one of the pocket sizes and it just wasn’t enough room for me to write in. Now when I shop for handbags, making sure my bujo will fit is a requirement.

Because this size is the most popular, there is a huge variety of notebooks options for you. When you are new to bullet journaling, all of these options can be overwhelming!

Hard cover or soft cover bullet journal?

Soft Cover – This is another decision you will have to make when choosing a bullet journal. If you want a flexible notebook that curves to fit your pocket or your backpack, soft cover is your best bet.

Hard Cover – I like to write when I’m out and about and sometimes I don’t have a hard surface to write on; I may end up using my knee as a desk if I’m sitting on a bench. That said, hard cover is my favorite choice.

Consider how you will be using your bullet journal when deciding on hard or soft covers.

The first thing you will need to start your bujo is a journal notebook itself!

But, what notebook to use for bullet journal?

There are several options for you to use and you will eventually find the best journal notebook for your needs.  For beginners, you don’t need to worry about the type of journal you get from start. Eventually you might upgrade to a different notebook when you get a handle of bullet journaling and have more ideas on how to make it work for you.

For now, look around and find something that you like. You can use either dot grid paper, lined paper or blank paper journals. Some of your options might include:

  1. Spiral notebook
  2. Soft or hardcover journal
  3. Journal specifically made for bullet journaling

Rhodia notebooks are one of my favorite journals to bujo in. The paper quality is just superior and if you like to play around with colors and use your bullet journal also for art journaling, bullet journal hand lettering or for any other creative purposes then this notebook is for you.

The book is durable quality bullet journal dotted paper that will stand the test of time and not bleed through with the use of several pens. You really can’t go wrong here.

Unlikely other journals I am mentioned below, they don’t come with pre-printed index and future log pages etc, but I have come to experience that not everyone finds them as useful (and of course you can always add these pages yourself).

For me the hard cover notebook is the best dot journal you can have but they also have a soft cover one which is cheaper but with good quality paper too.

Leuchtturm1917 makes one of the most popular dotted paper journals available and is the company that actually print the bullet journal notebook. Their journals come with a printed index notebook page, numbered pages and a envelop pocket at the back.

These journals come in a huge variety of colors which is always a plus, right?

These are good bullet journal notebooks and they affordable, however the paper quality is not as good as the one listed above from Rhodia. Still a great option if you don’t play with a lot of pen colors or don’t mind a little ghosting.

The new version of this book doesn’t have the Scribbles That Matter engraved features in the hardcover which I thing is best.

The journal comes with a great binding but the paper might see some bleeding and ghosting depending on the pen used.

Best pens for bullet journal

Now, we are going to check some writing utensils for bujos.

This category is very subjective because it depends again on what you like writing with and how creative you want to get on your planner.

To be able to follow the original bullet journal method you really don’t need more than a single pen you enjoy writing with. However, you might find that with time you will want to try different varieties of pens.

It is always good to have colored pens when you are writing different collections or making trackers on dot paper. It helps you stay organized and easily look at the information.

My favorite brands of pen include, amongst others, Pilot, Sakura, Tombow, Steadtler, Faber Castell and Crayola.

Below I am going to show you some writing, drawing and colored pens that I personally like and think are good pens for bullet journaling!

 

  • Sakura Pigma Micron Fineliners

These are my everyday bullet journal writing and drawing pens. They are made with archival ink which is waterproof and doesn’t bleed through any of the paper I have ever used.

I have a set with all the fineliner nib sizes and find it extremely handy to draw my doodles depending on the thickness of the line I need. And I can color afterwards with watercolors and it won’t blend together. My all time favorite bullet journal pens.

They are designed as drawing pen but I find them easy to write with too.

These are great writing pens but come in so many colors that you can easily use them for drawing and coloring too.

The gel pens deliver very vivid lines and are super smooth to write with, however the amount of ink that comes from them normally means that you will see smudges of color if your hand pass through it before it dries.

This is where the Paper Mate Inkojoy pens come in handy because they have a new technology that allows to ink to dry 3 times faster preventing smudges. Definitely one of the best colored pens for bullet journaling.

Best markers for bullet journal

I separated this section from the previous one because I use most of the marker pens here for my bullet journal art.

The ones listed above are good pens for writing while these ones here I use for coloring, decorating, doodling and hand lettering.

So, if you are not interested in using a bullet journal as a creative outlet and keep things minimal on point with the rapid logging, then perhaps you can skip reading this section all together.

I am going to show you some of my favorite bullet journal markers, highlighters and brush pens that you can use in your sketchbook or art bullet journal.

 

I am a big fan of the erasable Pilot Frixion Colors – nothing beats the ability to erase your mistakes specially when you like to keep your bujo clean!

The have soft colors, almost as though they were highlighters, so I use them to underline and highlight places, for small coloring, doodling and decoration around my pages and to test new headers for my collections as if I don’t like it, I just erase!

The caveat with the erasable pens is that in time they may fade and erase if exposed to heat, so I don’t write important things with them. But they are a lot of fun to work with and I use them quite a lot.

Yes, these crayola markers that you used as kids and your kids use at school are perfect bullet journal tools.

These markers are washable and come with a edge wedge nib shape that allows you to create thick or thin lines and be super creative with your artwork, hand lettering, faux calligraphy and craft in general.

Best highlighters for bullet journal

The Zebra Mildliners offer amazing pastel colors to your collection pens. They are mostly pastel and transparent so they definitely work as highlighters, the difference is there is only a couple of them that are actually neon, the majority are beautiful pastel tones.

In fact, I haven’t found a pastel color range highlighters anywhere else. The Stabilo boss has some but limited to 6 colors. The only caveat with the mildliners is that you really need to paper test them because they will bleed through some paper.

They also come in dual tip: a broad angled tip and a fine one for highlighting, underlining, drawing or writing.

Best bullet journal accessories

When you start putting your bujo together, you will understand that quite a few other supplies and bullet journal embellishments come in handy during your day to day planning.

These are all optional! But I decided to list them here because I often get asked how I create some spreads and I do it because I use many other bullet journal equipment, so here are a few to consider:

Perhaps not the first thing that comes to mind when considering bullet journal materials (specially if you use a dot or grid paper) but a ruler is one of the tools I use almost daily.

I find that the best ruler for bullet journal let’s me draw quick shapes on my spreads, make check boxes for my trackers and create my weekly spreads so much faster.

Best Bullet journal supplies list

Everything you need to know to get started!

I’ve always been a list maker.  My office is full of random post-it notes, lists on a whiteboard, notes on my computer screen, a notes app on my cellphone, and notes stored in several different productivity apps.  As you can imagine, having notes in all those places isn’t really very helpful.  It’s actually pretty overwhelming, but it doesn’t change the fact that making lists and crossing things off motivates me. When I first stumbled upon the Bullet Journal, I knew it  just might be the solution to organize all those notes in just one place.

Let’s start with a warning:  Don’t be misled by all the creative Bullet Journals you see online.  Yes, the Bullet Journal system is very versatile, and you can make it as simple or as fancy you want, but it’s best to keep it simple at first to avoid getting overwhelmed, and add embellishments as you go along.

The best way to become acquainted with the Bullet Journal is to start at the source.  Here’s a simple video walk-through of the basics from the creator, Ryder Carrol.

 Key elements of a Bullet Journal:

  • INDEX: This is simply a running list of the pages you put in your journal.  As you add new spreads, add a description and page number in your index.  Tip:  There’s no need to add every single daily page to your Index, and if you do, you’ll probably run out of room.  Instead, only put the pages that you know you’ll need to refer to again.
  • FUTURE LOG: A calendar of upcoming events.  I personally don’t use a future log in my journal because I keep all upcoming events in Google Calendar.
  • MONTHLY LOG: Includes a running list of events on one page and a list of monthly tasks on the other.  Many people customize this and use a traditional calendar layout instead.
  • DAILY LOG: This is the heart of the Bullet Journal system.  Each day you create a bulleted list of tasks you need to get done, events that are scheduled for that day, and any notes you want to record.  Tasks are represented by a dot (•), events by an open circle (o), and notes by a dash (-).

Optional Elements:

  • WEEKLY LOG: I also use a weekly log, although it is not part of the original Bullet Journal system.  I view my weekly log as a big-picture overview of the week ahead.  It helps me organize my brain for the coming week and prioritize tasks so I get the most important things accomplished.
  • COLLECTIONS:  Categorized lists of anything you want to track.  The list of possibilities is endless.  Here are some popular examples:
    • Books to read
    • Recipes to try
    • Projects
    • Goals
    • Healthy habit tracker
    • Gratitude log
    • Monthly memories
    • Weight-loss tracker
    • Meal planning

How to Get Started

Do you love the idea of bullet journaling, but feel a little overwhelmed about how to start?  Don’t worry, you’re not alone!  I hear that all the time.

All you need to get started is a notebook and a pen.  Seriously.  Any notebook will do.  It’s not about having a fancy planner or special pens.  In fact, I recommend that you start out with a cheap notebook at first and create the basic pages listed above.  Add collections as you think of something you’d like to track.  Simply turn to the next page in your journal, start your collection, and add it to your Index.

6 Tips to keep in mind:

  1. Practice Notebook.   Look at your very first bullet journal as a practice notebook.  You’ll use this to try things out, make mistakes, and figure out what works best for you.  You can go as simple as a cheap composition notebook, or use any notebook you already have around the house.
  2. Start with the Basics.  You don’t have to try everything at once.  Start with the basics and add a few new things every month.  It really is an amazing system, and I’d hate you to get discouraged by trying too much too soon.
  3. Keep it simple and save embellishments for later.  Keep in mind, the main purpose of your Bullet Journal is to simplify your life and help you get things done.  Even if you love the look of artistic Bullet Journals, start out simple.  Get the form and function of your journal down first, and save the fancy embellishments for later.
  4. Sketch in pencil first.  If you’re using a more complicated layout, sketch it in pencil first.
  5. Mistakes will happen.  Don’t worry about your journal being perfect.  It won’t be.  Mistakes are part of the process.
  6. Start an idea swipe file.  There are many places to find inspiration and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed with ideas.  I suggest creating a Bullet Journal Pinterest Board with ideas you’d like to try.  I also take screenshots of pages I want to try and put them in a file on my cellphone.  I share a lot of ideas on Instagram, so feel free to follow me for inspiration.

What do you need your bullet journal to do for you?

As you start out, it’s helpful to think about what you need your Bullet Journal to do for you.  A few questions to consider:

  • Will you be using your Bullet Journal at home or on-the-go?  This will help you determine the best size notebook for you.
  • What things do I already track regularly?  Some examples:  Income & expenses, school assignments, family chores, meal plans, grocery lists, exercise, etc.
  • If you currently use a planner, which sections work well for you?  Most can be easily adapted to a Bullet Journal.

One way to figure out what you need to add to you Bullet Journal is to create a mindmap.  Identify key areas of your life and things that would be helpful to include in your journal.

Sharpie Fine Point Pens

This is the basic black pen I use for most of my writing in my journal.  Make sure you get the Sharpie Pen and not a Sharpie Marker.  The cheapest way I’ve found to buy them is in a 12 pack on Amazon.

Tombow Dual Brush Markers

I’m still new to handlettering, but these are the pens I use to create some of the fancier lettering in my journal.  The Bright set is my favorite.

Staedtler Fineliners

Staedtler’s are a great pen with a fine tip.  I use these for some of the finer colored details and color coding.

Papermate Flair Markers

Papermate Flairs are a basic marker that you can find anywhere.  They are great because they don’t bleed through and come in a variety of colors.  They have a medium tip, so I use them for larger writing.

What is bullet journaling?

Bullet journaling is a system of journaling developed by the designer Ryder Carroll that has the purpose of helping you “track the past, organize the present and plan for the future”.

Bullet Journaling with a Planner

Continuing our series during this final year of AoS of the top 12 published posts of all time (measured in simple traffic numbers), here’s number 11. Like last month’s, this one’s a surprise to me as well! It was first published in early 2017.

I love that it’s written by Nicole, one of our longest-running contributors (and former Simple Homemade editor, if you remember those days!). And seeing as I now do this hybrid form of journaling myself, it’s a good reminder of how we all evolve in what works best for us at any given time.

I love seeing how people use their bullet journals (check out Tsh’s posts here & here; she also gives some background information on what exactly a bullet journal is if you’re new to this phenomenon).

I’m in a Facebook group for those who love to bullet journal (affectionately known to devotees as “BuJo”) and some of the photos people share of the journals amaze me. Some are flat-out works of art (but really practical, useful works-of-art!). Others are simple.

The common thread, of course, is that BuJo users can tailor their notebooks to their own needs.

As a visual person, checking my trusty paper planner is one of the first things I do in the morning. I’m no Luddite; my husband and I have a very well-synced Google Calendar that I reference daily, but my planner is where I get down to the nitty-gritty on paper.

It’s something tactile that I can see at a glance.

Years ago, before I knew the term existed, I was using a Moleskine journal to plan and keep track of my days, in a simplified BuJo style.

Over the last couple of years though, I realized that while I really love the idea of bullet journaling, I also really love planners, with their one-week spreads already sketched out, one-month calendars laid out with no work required.

I’m a creative person, but sometimes the blank page intimidates me.

My return to a love for paper planners began several years ago with a certain brightly colored cookie-cutter planner, but it didn’t quite fit my needs. I then tried another beautiful planner via Etsy that I was able to customize a bit, but it was still not quite right for me (apparently I was the Goldilocks of planners).

And then finally last year, I landed on my favorite planner yet. And why was this one such a fave? It’s minimal, useful, and leaves me lots of room to apply a bit of bullet journaling flair (and add my own color with fun pens) right in my planner.

Here’s how I combine bullet journaling practices using a simple planner. As a reference, I use the Get to Work Book, but there are plenty of journal options you could adapt.

Meal Planning

My planner has three shaded spots on each day that could be for the most important things on your to-do list. I personally use those for the day’s meals. I always write my meals in pencil, because life happens and I often have to shift days and meals.

Schedule

I like the days to have only open lines on my planner, no set times pre-printed. This way, I input appointments and times where they fit for me visually in the day.

To-Do List

Each week’s spread has three main items or goals, and I use those for bigger-ticket items, like a writing deadline or important errands. Smaller daily to-dos go in on each day.

Extra Notes & Blank Pages

My planner has plenty of space at the bottom of each page where I can brain dump or take random notes, and it also has blank pages at the end of the book, as well as at least one every month (plus some goal-planning templates).

Blank pages are a non-negotiable for me, and these are where I go to town with lists like books read (I use GoodReads but want to get better at tracking on paper, too), house projects, gift ideas, and big-picture planning.

The open space is a great place for habit-tracking, too, something I want to venture into more next year, along with some BuJo-inspired symbols and washi tape.

If you custom-order a planner online (via Etsy or elsewhere), sometimes you can order extra blank pages, which is a great way to make room for bullet journaling practices. The Nomatic planner is another planner that could work really well for combining planner use with bullet journaling, which has lots of lined and blank pages if you want to include the index of bullet journaling.

As with any productivity/planning system, the important thing is finding what works best for you. Don’t feel like you have to be pigeonholed into one system, either — pick and choose what works for you so that life can be as organized and productive as you want it to be.

What You Should Know About Bullet Journaling

If you’re constantly on the lookout for ways you can be more productive and organized (hey, who isn’t?), you’ve probably heard of bullet journaling or dot journaling.

I’m right there with you. But, after seeing so many different articles and Instagram posts singing its praises, I admittedly still felt skeptical.

Wow, so much beautiful handwriting and fun washi tape patterns! I’d think to myself while oggling those photos. But also, how incredibly time-consuming—and maybe even unnecessary.

So, with all of those cynical and conflicting thoughts swimming around in my mind, I figured the only way to get an honest lowdown of what bullet journaling involved was to try it for myself. That’s exactly what I did for an entire month—and now I’m here to share all my findings with my fellow skeptics out there.

What Is Bullet Journaling?

Despite my familiarity with bullet journaling as a concept, I still knew next to nothing about how to actually get things rolling for myself. In order to familiarize myself with the basics, I turned to the experts and purchased this set, which included a blank dot notebook and a practical guide to show me the ropes.

The companion guide explained that bullet journaling is simply a method for planning, journaling, and note-taking—all in one place.

Yes, that means you might end up with a shopping list on a page sandwiched between your Monday and Tuesday to-do list. Ugh, the thought alone made me itchy.

But, in reality, that’s no problem (it’s actually how bullet journaling was designed to function). That’s why one of the first pages of your journal should be a table of contents, where you log the page numbers for your different lists and notes.

So far, this made me feel as if I was just going to create one giant, jumbled notebook (how was this the holy grail of organization?).

However, there’s another thing that makes bullet journaling special: The idea is to use short sentences and designated symbols in order to categorize and track different information (such as notes, to-dos, and events).

Considering I’ve barely managed to commit my own social security number to memory, I was worried about remembering those symbols. So, at the book’s suggestion, I put a key on one of the very first pages in my notebook:

Those are the core symbols that you need to know in order to properly categorize the different information you’ll keep in your notebook. But, beyond that? You have free rein. If you’re expecting a giant rulebook, you’ll be pleased (or, if you’re a “by the book” person like me, totally horrified) to discover that bullet journaling is really flexible.

There are tons of different layouts (you’ll hear aficionados refer to them as “spreads”) that you can play around with—from monthly spreads—like mine below—to fitness tracking spreads (whoops, I mysteriously skipped one of those).

In fact, there are so many different options that I couldn’t possibly detail everything here. I highly recommend checking out the practical guide for a deep dive if you’re interested.

Personally, I used my journal most for a monthly spread and then for creating a daily spread where I could log my normal to-do list and relevant notes. Here’s what that ended up looking like (be forewarned, my handwriting is not Insta-worthy):

So, after an entire month, what did I think about this whole thing? Let’s dive into some pros and cons.

The Pros

  • It Kept Things Streamlined: As an aspiring professional list-maker, this was awesome.
  • It Made Me Plan Ahead of Time: Can someone say accountability? (I can!)
  • It Pushed Me to Journal: And that is something I’ve been saying I’ve wanted to find time to do.

The Cons

  • It’s Inconvenient: Unless you take it everywhere you go, it doesn’t work as well as it could
  • It’s a Time Investment: See photos throughout this article if you need more information on that.

Should You Try it?

If you want the short answer, yes, I absolutely think you should give it a go.

Arguably the best part is that there’s so much flexibility—meaning there are virtually endless things you can try to make it function for you.

It might take you some trial and error to land on the system that works best (personally, I’m still playing around and making some tweaks to try out different spreads and see how this method can better fit in with the organizational tools I already use). But, that’s the beauty of bullet journaling—you have the breathing room to do just that.

With that in mind, I’ll leave you with one final word of advice I learned from my own experiment: When you’re still figuring out how bullet journaling works, use pencil.

Fast Logging uses a character system (such as dashes, asterisks, circles, etc.) to simplify, shorten, and organize information. These symbols are explained in a key usually located at the front of the magazine.Information can be organized into tasks, events and notes, but the possibilities are endless.

Many students have taken up journalism to help them excel at all levels of education – high school, college, graduate school, and more. There are many “Learn With Me” videos on YouTube that show you how to learn with YouTubers, as well as tips, tricks, and favorite learning materials. Closely related to this are curricula, which are Instagram accounts dedicated to learning and adopting effective, organized and aesthetically pleasing notes.Bullet journalism has been included in many of these videos as a way to organize and stay productive at school. A study with me was published in 2019 – Effective Bullet Journalism Techniques, Habits and Hacks to Be Successful, Productive, and Organized – with dedicated strategies in math, science, history, languages, and more by Jasmine Shao and Alice Yagan. This book was inspired by the popular “learn with me” or “curriculum” phenomenon.

Operation

Battle route: Victory Day is approaching – a holiday with tears in our eyes. For me and for my whole family, this day in 2020 will be special. As a result of many years of searching, experiences and hopes, we found another participant in the Great Patriotic War – my great-grandfather Tsizdoev Akhmed Saadalaevich, my grandfather’s uncle, who went to the front at the very beginning of the Great Patriotic War and disappeared without a trace.

I was not lucky enough to see my grandfather, Salman Saadovich, but from numerous stories I knew that my grandfather had a beloved uncle, Ahmed, with whom, despite the 20-year age difference, he had especially warm feelings.My grandfather was 9 years old when Uncle Ahmed volunteered for the front to defend the Motherland. Uncle Ahmed was an amazingly handsome, courageous and strong young man. It was he who, distinguishing among all the children, taught grandfather from the age of 4 to ride a horse, drive a car, swim, shoot various types of weapons, fight, pull up on two index fingers (!) And, most importantly, never lose his presence of mind. All these skills came in handy for my grandfather when, as a 12-year-old boy, who grew up in one day, in exile, in the cold steppes of Kazakhstan, he took upon himself an incredibly heavy burden of caring for his large family.And only 79 years later we managed to learn about the fate of our great-grandfather, who gave his life for our future!

On April 18, 2015, the republican newspaper “Serdalo” published an article by my aunt Marem Tsurova “They are returning” (BLOG “SERDALO” – Live Journal https://serdalo-gazeta. livejournal.com/810259.html), with which it began our search work. I will cite this article in an abridged version.

The ringing of victorious orders is getting quieter …

These lines come to my mind every time I see the beautiful and childishly touching faces of our veterans.How few of them! And how I want to warm their hearts, which are beating more and more anxiously every day.

The war heroes leave. But today I want to tell the story of the return of one of them.

The fact that my father, Tsizdoev Salman Saadovich, had an uncle, whose fate turned out to be as tragic as it was mysterious, I learned while still a schoolgirl.

My father was an amazing person. Now there are no such men, and in his time there were only a few such people . .. There was no case that he refused to help even a stranger.There was no need to ask him, he came himself and solved any problem. Even being confined to a wheelchair, he remained the navigator of the ship, which was called the Tsizdoev family. I don’t remember the day he was resting. I have never seen him idle. So it burned out on the fly …

You can write an entire book about my father, but today I am talking about him in the context of a story that amazed me and made me believe that no effort is in vain.

He was looking for his uncle all his life. Unfortunately, there were no current opportunities then, especially since my uncle was drafted into the army on the eve of the war, letters from the front rarely came, and the events of the beginning of 1944 (deportation of entire nations) overwhelmed all previous events in their tragedy and cruelty.Uncle’s tracks disappeared without a trace. There were many versions. The loss of that scanty amount of documents that remained from his uncle was a big blow for the father: while the father, having previously built a small house in Malgobek, gradually transported all his closest relatives to their homeland, papers, photographs were lost without a trace . ..

That was in 2003 … We all gathered at our parents’ house: my father once again made a commemoration for his uncle. Mom said that today my father fulfilled his long-standing dream: he erected monuments to his mother buried in Kazakhstan and his uncle, who disappeared without a trace, being unmarried and childless, in the family cemetery.The father was very excited.

“Back there, in Kazakhstan,” he said, “I gave myself my word that I would do it. And I did it. True, I hoped to find a trace of Ahmed, but apparently not destiny. ”

Father was really happy that day. There was a feeling that he nevertheless found his uncle and buried him next to his brothers, in the family cemetery

2015 year. 70 years after the war ended. The number of living heroes gradually goes to hundreds, tens, units. 11 years since my grandfather died … And suddenly, like a bolt from the blue: in Voronezh, in the archives, information about the heroically deceased Tsizdoev Akhmed Saadalaevich was discovered!

Yes . .. The old men leave.Both veterans and children of the war – those who did not fight on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War, but according to whose fate it was no less cruel than the tracks of a fascist tank … But they are returning! Those who died young, who did not know the joy of simple human happiness, they return decades later to remind us that they also wanted to love, raise children and grandchildren. And it’s easy to live …

They return to us in granite, stone or marble, in scanty archival lines, less and less often in memories.And they ask us to live and remember. Just REMEMBERED … ”

This story shocked us. Since that time, work began on the study of documents and archives of battles on the Don during the Great Patriotic War. We began to search the Internet for the addresses of sites, search units, military-patriotic clubs, museums in the Voronezh region. A correspondence began, as a result of which we managed to find out not only the place and time of the heroic death of Akhmed Saadalaevich Tsizdoev, but also the details of that very last battle in his life. Everything matched! The documents testified that the Red Army rifleman Tsizdoev Akhmed Saadulaevich, born in 1912, a native of the village. Verkhniye Achaluki was indeed drafted from the Achaluk district military registration and enlistment office of the Chechen-Ingush ASSR and fought as part of the 174th rifle division.

The date of the last battle in which he participated was indicated, and the reason for his retirement from the ranks: “Killed 08/05/1942 in the village. Korotoyak, Korotoyaksky district, Voronezh region. Buried in mass grave No. 162 ”

I had never heard of this city before, but since it became now close to me, I started looking for information about it.Founded in 1647 as a fortress, Korotoyak (from the Kara-tayak river flowing into the Don at that place (Black bull – from the Turkic language) has a very tragic fate. Twice: in 1737 and 1789 the city was overtaken by large fires, in 1831 – cholera epidemic, and during the Great Patriotic War Korotoyak became the site of fierce battles with the Nazis. In 2010, a documentary was filmed about how during the Great Patriotic War Korotoyak was completely destroyed and never again could become a city.In order to understand the scale and role of the battles for the small town of Korotoyak, which now bears the honorary title of “Settlement of Military Valor”, I will cite several fragments – military reports and testimonies of the participants in those battles:

“The fascists approached Korotoyak in the summer of 1942. The following took part in the battles for Korotoyak:
-174 Infantry Division,

The 174th Infantry Division, in which my great-grandfather served, entered and fought in a difficult, dangerous military-political and strategic situation. Hitler set the task of crushing the armed forces of the Soviet Union, destroying the state, sweeping away Leningrad and Moscow from the land, destroying the population, flooding the areas so that there would be no memory of them … It was during this period, on July 28, 1942, I.V. Stalin issued the famous order No. 227 “NOT A STEP BACK!”

I want to tell you about the last episode from my grandfather’s combat path.
On the night of August 5, the reinforced rifle battalion of the Rifle Regiment received an especially important task to cross the Don, using all possible means: from a pedestrian crossing to working boats and ropes.Early in the morning, the fighters, having crossed to the right bank, captured the Chernetsky farm, the villages of Averino and Mostishche in a swift semi-daily battle, engaged in a battle on the southwestern outskirts of Korotoyak and then, pulling off the enemy forces, liberated the crossing. An energetic onslaught and hot battle, at the cost of incredible efforts and unparalleled courage, the enemy was driven out of Korotoyak. It was in this battle that our great-grandfather Akhmed Saadalaevich Tsizdoev died heroically.

However, two days later, pulling up fresh forces, the enemy again attacked Korotoyak.Many times the city passed from hand to hand and was completely liberated only on January 17, 1943.

The fighting was fierce. According to the recollections of the nurses, the wounded had to be processed on the battlefield, and then dragged on by dozens. The flow of the wounded went around the clock, the wounds were not only bullet and shrapnel, but also stab, cut, chopped, which testified to hand-to-hand fighting, where a bayonet, butt, knife and even a sapper shovel are used. Nurses, still very young, had to lie down on the operating table for direct blood transfusions to wounded soldiers.Often during operations, they collapsed on a chair and immediately fell asleep, because they worked for several days without rest or sleep. The surgeons sadly shook their heads, encouraged them and called to quickly get up at the operating table to bandage the operated soldiers . ..

The result of the battle for Korotoyak was completely defeated 75 and 336, partly 334 infantry divisions of the Germans, 4 and 12 infantry divisions of the Hungarians, regiments and squadrons attached to them. 64 staff and chief officers were killed. 345 non-commissioned officers, 36 thousand soldiers and officers, destroyed 275 tanks, thousands of mortars, 2000 machine guns, 4600 rifles, 318 vehicles, about 1000 horses with carts, 2 ammunition depots, 2 warehouses with food, 4 aircraft, 89 guns and captured a lot various military equipment, ammunition and equipment … This is how the soldiers, including my great-grandfather, fought for the liberation of our homeland from the fascist invaders!

Out of more than 800 buildings in the old Russian town of Korotoyak, not a single one survived – everything was destroyed: blown up or burned.During the occupation, the Germans shot more than a thousand civilians in Korotoyak, 1,500 people were tortured and abused, 270 people were taken to Germany, the fate of 5,000 residents of Korotoyak remained unknown.

During the search, we met with a large number of our fellow countrymen – war veterans, relatives who knew or at least heard something about our grandfather, on the Internet we read a lot of memoirs of veterans of hostilities on the Don and residents of Korotoyak, corresponded with organizations and constant monitoring of information on the sites https: // pamyat-naroda.ru /, http://podvignaroda.ru/; Immortal Regiment https://www.moypolk.ru.

Our efforts have yielded results. The result of our searches was a letter that we received from the coordinator of the “Immortal Regiment” in the village. Korotoyak, Valentina Ivanovna Krutskikh:

“We cherish the memory of every warrior who gave his life for the freedom of our Motherland and, of course, the defenders of our dear Korotoyak.

In Korotoyak there is a mass grave No. 162, where the remains of fallen soldiers are buried. On the granite slabs, the names of about 3000 buried in the grave are immortalized. Unfortunately, the names of Tsyzdoev (Tsyzdaev) are missing from the lists of the mass grave.

According to the rules for entering the name of the warrior into the list of defenders of the Fatherland buried and immortalized on the memorial plate of the mass grave, which happens every year, i.e.because searches reveal new names of heroes, relatives need to write a statement … ”

My father, as the closest relative of Akhmed Saadalaevich, wrote this statement, we handed over to Korotoyak, along with the statement, a scanned only photograph of our great-grandfather – a precious family heirloom, and soon received an answer:

Gleb Vladimirovich Lokshin is a doctor by education. After entering medical school after high school, he graduated and served in the army as a medical professional.Then he became a student at the Second Moscow Medical University. N.I. Nina Lysova: Why did you decide to quit medicine and take up special effects?

Gleb Lokshin: All my school years I and my friends were fiercely fond of chemistry, especially that part of it that is associated with the synthesis and use of pyrotechnics and materials. Now, from the height of my profession, I recall that time with a shudder – after our experiments we miraculously remained safe and sound. Every time something rumbled in the street, the police called my parents and asked: “Is your son at home?”Then we brought a lot of trouble, though still harmless, to our environment. And once my classmate, the artist of combined filming Vyacheslav Klimenkov called me, and jokingly said that the first courses of pyrotechnics had opened at Mosfilm and everyone was invited to them. time finished my internship and I had a free month. I think, I’ll go, take a look at what they are there, in the cinema, blow up, pamper, remember my childhood. The state of affairs in cinema pyrotechnics in those post-perestroika years simply shocked me with its gloom.But that didn’t stop us from seeing great prospects for special effects for the magical world of cinema. That’s how I got into the profession thanks to the Mosfilm film studio and the great specialists who worked there. We were taught cinematography by real masters – Vladimir Mikhailovich Sukhoretsky and Nikolai Borisovich Neyaglov. They not only taught all the intricacies of the profession, but also shared their own secrets and developments. In the pyrotechnic shop of “Mosfilm” I worked for several years as a gunsmith-pyrotechnician, comprehending the wisdom of this business, inventing new methods and technologies for creating special effects.I love weapons very much and was simply shocked when I got acquainted with the unique collection of Mosfilm’s in-game weapons. The first films in which I took part were “Poisons, or the History of Poisoning” (directed by Karen Shakhnazarov), “Star” (directed by Nikolai Lebedev), “Antikillers” (directed by Yegor Konchalovsky). In these pictures he mastered the profession, many of its nuances. It seemed to me extremely interesting, and I realized that I wanted to do this. This decision was a shock in my family, but I accepted it.And the film industry at that time began to develop actively after the perestroika stagnation, and special effects masters became in demand.

N.L .: So what is your profession called?

G. L .: In my work book it was written “master gunsmith-pyrotechnician”, but this is still a Soviet qualification of the profession. Today I would call her a “master of special effects”, because special effects are a very broad concept, they are made by people of various professions: specialists in computer graphics, plastic makeup, pyrotechnics, chemists, mechanics, etc.All these specialists take part in the creation of special effects.

N.L .: Digital visual effects (computer graphics) are widely used in modern film production, but their creation is a laborious process. Is it cheaper to rent?

G.L .: It’s not that it’s cheaper. Something to shoot “live” is simply impossible, and it is drawn on a computer, but something, on the contrary, is very problematic to create on it. For example, there are several environments that are extremely difficult to draw from “scratch” – water, fire, smoke. It is easier to remove them separately, and then multiply, edit and place in the right places in frames. Each specialist in the field of special effects has his own set of subtle tools, and the main task is to skillfully combine their capabilities in one film. We often make blanks for computer graphics – individual effects on a blue background that can be cut and reproduced using computer technology. It is extremely difficult to create believable rain on a computer, to convey the reaction of water when it falls to the ground.Easier to remove and then process.

N.L .: Why did you want to organize your own company?

G. L .: I wanted to work in the direction necessary for cinema and be independent for a long time. And four years ago we managed to realize it. The excellent organizer Maxim Viktorovich Lutsenko helped in this difficult matter. With him, we took the first steps in creating a company and organizing our own production of materials and technical base. Now, in the emergency days of filming, we can attract a large number of our specialists to work, who shape the creative potential of the company, because people are the main thing in special effects.

N.L .: Who are they by education, specialty?

G. L .: Education and specialty play an important, but not the main role. It’s just that their hands grow from the right place and they have the ability to think creatively and engineering, to invent something new in the shortest possible time, sometimes directly on the set. This combination of resourcefulness, intelligence and good hands is a treasure for us, such people create special effects and take root in our environment.Knowing the power and method of action of a device, they understand what result can be achieved.

N.L .: In your team there are chemists-technologists, and design engineers, and electronic engineers, and representatives of many other specialties …

G.L .: After all, we are not magicians. All special effects always take place in accordance with the laws of physics and chemistry. While inventing the next effect, I very often seek advice from talented professionals and scientists in various fields, and it is they who help to achieve the desired result on the screen.In addition, they are often just very interesting people, communication with whom is a pleasure.

N.L .: On the website “Special effect” it is indicated that the company provides weapons …

G. L .: We are talking about weapon models, the use of military weapons on the set is strictly prohibited, and it is not necessary. We build special devices into the model of the gun and, depending on the task, such a weapon simulates a shot with smoke and fire. I emphasize again that it is impossible in principle to use it as a combat one.Of course, it would be just wonderful if we had the opportunity to use blank weapons on the set, as is done in all civilized countries. But in the current version of the Law “On Weapons”, the interests of filmmaking are not taken into account in any way, however, like many others, the concept of “blank weapons” is simply not there.

N.L .: And who shoots from these weapon models – actors or stuntmen?

G.L .: Actors. We tell them where to click, and they do it under the close supervision of our specialists.

N.L .: In the same place, on the website, it is indicated that all products are certified. Are we talking about explosive products?

G.L .: About pyrotechnic products. The fact is that in Russia there has recently been a certain shortage of pyrotechnics for film production. They were previously made at the Mosfilm film studio and continue to be produced now, but in a very limited range. We decided to expand it and began to produce similar products in conjunction with enterprises that have the right to produce such substances. This is a very complex technical production.

N.L .: How are fire effects created?

G. L .: Fire effects are any fire in the frame. It can burn, go out, catch fire or flare up at the right time, have a strictly defined area and power. It is important to clearly understand what will happen, to know that you can stand at such and such a distance from the fire, but you cannot come a little closer. The ability to perfectly control fire is professionalism. There are many combustible materials (special chemical compounds, polymers, powder substances, etc.)), and we, knowing the properties of such substances, mix them, combine them in such a way that they burn with the specified parameters, with the desired color effect so that actors, stuntmen and personnel do not suffer from thermal radiation. Most often, of course, we use propane gas, because it is easy to manage. We can provide stuntmen with some of the tools they need to work safely. For example, to protect them from the thermal effects of fire, we produce special fire-retardant gels; we have a miniature breathing apparatus that can be hidden under a suit and breathe when everything around is on fire.Large-scale shooting with a lot of explosions and fires is a huge responsibility and a huge stress. In the history of cinema, unfortunately, there have been cases when seemingly the most innocuous filming led to tragedy.

N.L .: Do the decorations burn out as a result of organized fires?

G. L .: It is not at all necessary, more often they are saved. The fact is that we can make an imitation of a fire inside a room for certain angles, but we cannot ignite it.For this you need to assess the fire hazard of the room. If it allows, we can make a large fire with the help of gas for a very short time – immediately light it up, quickly take the necessary frames and extinguish it after 5 … 6 seconds. A burning gas has a remarkable property: it does not spread combustion sources, it behaves predictably and controllably, unlike liquid combustible media. Therefore, with the help of gas, large burning areas can be created, and then instantly extinguished by shutting off the valve. And most importantly, they extinguished the fire, checked if anything was smoking, extinguished it with water, and you can continue filming in the room, it was not damaged.

N.L .: They are simply masters of fire! And what does imitation of explosions of various structures mean, in fact, they are not blown up?

G.L .: We can place charges inside and outside the building in special guiding structures, so when an explosion occurs, the building will disappear in the frame, debris will fly, and the viewer will have a complete feeling that nothing is left of the building. The explosion will begin with the fact that at first windows, doors, but not real, but decorative, will fly out from the roof, specially placed objects will fly from the roof, then several explosions will be triggered around the building, which will completely cover it with dust or fire. When the dust settles, they simply wipe it off with a rag, insert real windows and doors. That’s all – the shooting of the explosion of the building is over, for the viewer it literally crumbled, but in reality it did not suffer in any way. We also “blow up” cars. There are special means that allow you to close the car with smoke and fire, separate fragments will fly out of it (specially placed, for example, false doors), because of the car, other fragments of supposedly it will fly, everything is accompanied by a powerful flash of fire, and when it goes out, before us will appear a whole car, slightly covered with dust.

N.L .: With whom are all these special effects discussed?

G.L .: With directors and producers. The first ones require bright scenes from us, and the second ones – to minimize costs, carefully assess the possible consequences and make a decision.

N.L .: Smoke effects are just as difficult to organize?

G. L .: Smokes are different. We can make fogs of different densities in different conditions. To do this, we use quads, on which powerful generators are installed, with their help environmentally friendly smoke generators are sprayed (in medical practice they are used for intramuscular injections).We get safe smokes in which you can stay as long as you like without harm to your health.

N.L .: Do you use reagents of domestic or foreign production?

G. L .: Unfortunately, the assortment of domestic products is extremely limited, therefore mostly foreign ones. Although they are much more expensive, they are reliable, and this is the main thing for us. Therefore, even foreign companies filming in Russia use our services, knowing that the safety for the actors will be guaranteed.In the past, anthracene smoke bombs were often used in cinema. They are, of course, cheap, but people who were in the smoke zone during filming breathed air with this carcinogen. This did not lead to anything good. We try to get away from such funds whenever possible.

N.L .: What is stunt equipment?

G. L .: Stunt equipment are devices that allow stuntmen to make stunts bright and spectacular. Our devices help them jump high, fly, hover and fall without injury.For example, the pneumatic system “Aeroreched” allows you to apply an instant pulling force to a person and any object. For this, a stuntman is put on a special vest with a large number of attachment points, a cable is tied to it. The cable twitches, the person flies along a given trajectory and lands on the mats.

N.L .: Who invents all these devices?

G. L .: Many of them themselves, some in collaboration with Action SFX.For example, capsules of bullet hits – special non-pyrotechnic balls I managed to develop myself and set up their production. In movies, it is often required to create an imitation of a bullet hit – a bullet hit a living or inanimate object, blood flowed or a hole formed. This can be conveyed using various technical means. We can put a bezel, load it with a pyrotechnic simulator and blow it up so that bullet holes are formed, debris flew. But this requires a lot of preparation, since you need to know how the frame will be built in order to properly prepare the panel.And according to our technology, it is possible to shoot from pneumatic guns on any surfaces (walls, stones, etc.) with plastic balls filled with either a spark or a bullet component. The ball will emit dust or spark, giving the impression of being hit by a bullet. The use of such simulators does not require any preparation.

N.L .: How is a bullet hitting a person simulated?

G. L .: With the help of pyrotechnic simulators (they are called “landings”) installed on specially prepared armor plates with reservoirs filled with a substance similar to blood.Depending on the types of weapons (pistol, cannon, large-caliber rifle or buckshot), different landing areas are used. Pneumatic ejection systems are sometimes added. We have a wide arsenal of technical means and, taking into account the task at hand, we choose the option that allows us to solve it.

N.L .: Arrows and spears don’t actually fly either?

G. L .: They fly only along the trajectory that we set by laying cables and strings. This dangerous weapon will fly over them, hit the actor’s chest, and blood will flow (from a previously prepared reservoir).Cinema is the art of deception. We have special pneumatic revolving guns for shooting arrows, mechanical arrows. The actor is put on a vest – a catcher of these arrows. We “shoot” the actor with a gun, he “dies heroically” without feeling any pain.

N.L .: How do you manage to ensure that the cars in the frame take off, turn over in the air and fall effectively?

G.L .: If we just blow up the car, there will be nothing interesting in the frame. Therefore, to simulate an explosion, we use pyrotechnic means, and toss the car with the help of a special gun installed in it – pyrotechnic or pneumatic. The cannon is very heavy; when fired, it is pushed off the ground by the rod, and the car takes off. It can be “blown up” at the right time: when it is standing or driving, controlled by a stuntman or remotely. The machine “explodes”, separate fragments that have been prepared in advance fly off from it, turns over in the air as many times as necessary, and lands exactly where and as we planned.Our experts calculate the lifting height of the machine based on its mass, and we know how to place the cannon so that the person sitting in it does not suffer. The overload when triggered by the cannon can become 20 times, and if you put the stuntman next to it, the outcome will be fatal. But we will put a charge of the required strength, we will correctly place all the equipment in the car, and nothing terrible will happen to the stuntman. More often than not, we try to use pneumatic systems for throwing cars. And, of course, it is better if the car going to a serious accident or explosion is radio-controlled.Because it is safer and allows you to unfold more widely in the colors of film destruction.

N.L .: I get the impression that there are no unsolvable problems for you. Is this really so ?

G. L .: I’m afraid to sound immodest, but if the producer agrees to use all the technical means at our disposal, enough time to think everything over carefully, then we are able to cope with very difficult tasks.

N.L .: How does the work on the painting begin?

G.L .: From an acquaintance with the director and the script of the film. The human factor is the cornerstone of any creative process. You need to understand what the director and cameraman need – a shootout, a disaster, a lyrical scene. We have a lot of special effects for operators. For example, more than 20 types of smoke, they can travel in different ways, have different structure and density. If the scenes of destruction are supposed, we tell how they can be organized, decide whether it is really necessary to ruin the scenery, in the case of the presence of actors in the destruction zone, we shoot through interruptions.We work out all the nuances, and when it comes to the placement of equipment in the scenery, we painstakingly work on the preparation of the frame with the artist-supplier.

N.L .: Do you have to shoot duplicates?

G. L .: Extremely rare; as a rule, we get by with the only one. Our equipment works quite reliably and predictably, and the rare cases when you still have to shoot takes are more often caused by acting.

N.L .: And what are the special effects filmed for – film or digital?

G.L.: Special effects are not cheap, they need to be developed, technically introduced into the frame and extremely difficult to repeat. Sometimes it takes a week to prepare a special effect for one shot. Therefore, more often we shoot directly on film, and on video, only when there is an opportunity to try out some effect or individual fragments in the process of preparing a complex one. We show that one small explosion will be like this, but there will be many of them in the frame. When we shoot on film, we are sure that the quality will be excellent, we know the properties of this film and how to shoot, for example, fires on it.After all, flashes of explosions with fire during night shooting can “blind” the camera, so the movie camera must be properly adjusted. In the case of video shooting, there are some nuances associated with color reproduction, but the main thing is that the video camera does not allow rapid shooting. The camcorder can be “overclocked” up to 150 frames per second or more, and we will see every little blood or flying splinter in the frame. The video footage will have to be split using digital methods. As a rule, video filming is used for budget projects. Film is an ideal medium for shooting special effects, and its main advantage is that we can use a high shooting speed. All special effects last a fraction of a second and you need to have time to shoot them.

N.L .: What films have you taken part in recently?

G. L .: “Paragraph 78” directed by Mikhail Khleborodov. We are pleased to work with the producer of this film, Yusup Bashiev. Special effects for “Antikillers” were filmed with him. He is very attentive to all the innovations that can be applied to the cinema to make action scenes vivid. In the film “Paragraph 78” we faced one of the most difficult problems – there had to be a weapon in the frame, and the legislation does not allow the use of weapons in films.I had to look for a way out. Three machine guns, which are present in the film, are computer-generated, and the American M134 machine gun, designed for playing airsoft and shooting 6-mm plastic balls, was bought in the United States. Simulators of bullet hits had to be synchronized with the mythical shooting of plastic toys. The terrible fire that this machine gun spews in the frames was drawn on a computer. Certainly not the best solution. I have already said, but I will repeat again that the inability to use blank weapons during filming creates many problems, and the actors play differently when they have plastic nonsense in their hands, and not a real one, for example, a pistol.

N.L .: What is the main thing in your profession?

G. L .: The ability to ensure safety, which is achieved only through the accumulated experience and thorough knowledge of all the subtleties.

N.L .: Do you often have unexpected situations during filming?

G.L .: Praise the Lord, no. A professional approach to any task allows you to prevent this. True, sometimes the director asks to organize something not planned, without preparation.But even if we agree to this, we still clearly know what can happen with the most unfavorable outcome. For example, that a building can burn up by 60%, and it will have to be extinguished. If the producer is satisfied with this, we do what they ask. The situation would become uncontrollable if I had not warned about this and fire-fighting equipment of proper quality would not have been prepared. Striking a match is not difficult, but it is important to know what result it will lead to. Russian V12 engine for “Cortege”: all the details

In general, when it comes to some promising developments in the domestic auto industry, the lips of seasoned auto journalists involuntarily curl into a skeptical grimace. We have not seen so many stillborn projects over the past 25 years: Moskvich limousines, and Volga with V8, and fuel cell Lada, and hybrid Yo-mobiles, and Marusya supercars… All this, flashed in the press, eventually happily rested in the Bose.

At first, I was also skeptical about the show model of the V12 engine. But while we communicated with the NAMI employees at the stand, skepticism gradually melted away. Because if the “storytellers” from “Yo-auto” talked about their fantasy rotary-piston engine very vaguely, avoiding details, Moscow engineers willingly commented on every technical solution used in the domestic V12.

So, all known details about the motor as of the end of August 2016.

Cylinder block

Show model – 12-cylinder V-block with a camber angle of 60 degrees. On its basis, it is also planned to create a whole series: V8, V6 and in-line “four”. It is assumed that all motors in the line will have the same bore (88 mm), but the piston stroke (for the V12 it is 90 mm) will vary. The pistons themselves, presumably, will also be unified.

The motor is “all-aluminum”, both the block and the block head are made of light alloy – as a result, the “dry” weight without liquids is 310 kilograms.In US they say that the alloy composition is their own know-how, and the casting equipment for the production of blocks is also their own.

Cylinders – with quite traditional “dry” thin-walled cast iron sleeves. The idea was to abandon liners altogether and apply a “nikasil” coating to the cylinder walls to reduce friction losses. However, it was abandoned, since “Nikasil” is very fragile and is simply destroyed from detonation after refueling with insufficient octane number.

Gas distribution mechanism

The valve design is more or less traditional: four valves per cylinder, two camshafts per row, that is, a total of 48 valves and four camshafts.Each has a phase shifter that adjusts the opening time depending on the speed, by analogy with the “Toyota” VVT system and many others. Adjustment of the valve lift, like the Honda VTEC, is not provided. Camshaft drive – chain.

Power supply, boost and cooling system

Injection – direct, and a separate injection pump works for every three cylinders. The pressure in the fuel rail reaches 250 atmospheres. The supercharging system in NAMI is called “Quadro turbo”. There are really four turbines, again, one for three cylinders. The manufacturer has already been determined – this is not BorgWarner or KKK, but the Russian plant “Turbotekhnika” from the city of Protvino, Moscow region.

Localization

IN NAMI they emphasize that all the design is completely and completely carried out on our own, without the involvement of foreign engineering companies and any developments. As for the components, there are still quite a lot of foreign parts on the prototype “A”, which was shown at the MIAS: this is the power system, and all the sensors, and ignition coils, and even pistons with rings.However, by the time of the start of serial production, the goal is to increase the share of localization to 85%.

Declared resource

The service life of the motor, which is laid down in it during the design, is 350,000 kilometers. Overhaul by technical documentation is not provided in principle, however, purely theoretically, the liners can be repressed – this is how we informally explain.

Test & Manufacturing

If this V12 does make it to production, it will be one of the fastest-built engines in the world.Work on it began only 1.5 years ago, and in a year the engine, according to NAMI’s plans, will be ready for testing as part of a car. At the moment, bench tests of the engine are in full swing, and the design is gradually being finalized. Hopefully, the pace in the spirit of the “first five-year plans” will not negatively affect the quality of the product.

To be or not to be?

To my question, why all these years it has not been possible to create world-wide competitive motors and gearboxes, and now it will suddenly work out, NAMI answered immediately and without hesitation: “now there is a customer.”On my own behalf, I will add that our customer is quite personified – the V12 is being built, first of all, for President Putin, who wished to replace his S600 Pullman with a domestic car. Well, since the stakes are so high, then the result should be decent. Anyway, let’s keep our fingers crossed.

Only five companies in the world are serially producing V12 engines: Daimler AG, BMW, Volkswagen (more precisely, his Lamborghini, and only for his beloved), as well as FCA for their Ferrari and Maserati and independent English Aston Martin, which, however , cooperates with Daimler, buying some electrics from the Germans.

“The new domestic motor, at first glance, evokes a joyous“ can the same ”. But if you look closely at the design, a lot of tricky questions arise.

Firstly, the impressive power figures should not be taken as a sign of the total superiority of technology. For a turbocharged engine of this volume, the numbers are not at all exorbitant, competitors with light chip tuning have better parameters. It’s just that the whole question is in environmental friendliness, resource and quality of the system in intermediate modes.

The design is moderately complex and very conservative. I only welcome dry cast iron sleeves, but there are doubts about the possibility of replacing them. The guaranteed resource does not look very impressive, 350 thousand kilometers for a large and conservative engine is not much, and what limits the resource is not yet clear. However, if these are the numbers of the guaranteed mileage (these concepts are completely different), then the result is very good.

The power supply and boost system looks overly complicated until it becomes clear that this V12 is essentially two V6s, arranged in the most straightforward way.First of all, this is hinted at by the camber angle of the blocks of 60 degrees – this is an ideal parameter for a six-cylinder engine, in which the installation of balance shafts is not required to neutralize vibrations. Accordingly, both “quad-supercharging” with four turbines, and the presence of four high-pressure fuel pumps (moreover, for powerful V12s, two more powerful ones are usually enough “for the eyes”). In general, the design initially included the possibility of not very expensive and relatively uncomplicated scaling, which is not bad.

But there are still questions about the layout.The motor looks noticeably bulky, competitors’ passenger units, at first glance, are noticeably more compact. NAMI’s creation is more reminiscent of the tank B2 in proportions. The intake components are close to where the catalysts will be located in the future, and how the attachments will be driven is not yet clear. Judging by the layout of the block, the generator and compressor of the air conditioner will have to be hung somewhere very far from the cylinder block. We were surprised by the silicone tubes of clearly Chinese origin, but this can be attributed to the fact that the motor is still at the prototype stage.

Now for the power supply system. High-precision injectors and fuel injection pumps for gasoline engines are not at all consumer goods, they are not produced by many companies. And not in vain, because these are very complex devices, and their adjustment on a specific motor requires the help of specialists with special qualifications. I would not count on fast and high-quality localization, and it is not necessary for small volumes of production … Now, if the engine gets on the UAZ, including a new one, and will diverge in circulation of at least a hundred thousand copies per year, then it’s another matter. “

I don’t remember how we swam, how we got out. The main thing was to warn! Look, 2 of our soldiers are running. Wait, we give them! We stopped. What are you, so yours and so. For whom are you hitting ?! They opened their mouths. They ran with us to the lieutenant colonel.
He immediately understood everything, transferred fire to the Germans. But after that he was indignant:

I knew the location of all the detachments and began to shift fire to the Germans. Then our partisans climbed all over this area.A fight ensued, and it lasted 3 hours. But in it the favorite of the partisans was killed, lieutenant Korel.

Unfortunately, old friends have not yet fully realized the truth about life in the country of the Soviets with its “law” punishing party members for … “non-reporting”, with its millions of voluntary free “informers” called the “conscience and honor” of the era. Even Hitler’s fascist Germany did not have such a scale of “conscience” when they reached the “psychiatric hospitals” for normal people. And so the conversation on this topic quickly dried up. We had already talked about everything, and drank further in silence. We sat and thought slowly – each his own.

Tsaplintsev turned off the tape recorder and took out a stack of typescript from the table – the text of the article “Unknown Pages of the Slovak Popular Uprising”, published in Slovakia on April 29, 1964 by a Bratislava correspondent. The ending of the legendary epic was approaching. If ever history takes over it, it is necessary to pay tribute to the honesty of these people, who, going towards death, allowed to look deep into their hearts and discovered the noblest impulses of their souls.
There were seriously wounded people who heroically shot themselves before the decisive battle, so as not to be a burden to the brigade. There were volunteers who were the first to go to their deaths in the mined fields. There were 400 partisans who fell here, in unknown lands between Borovoe and Gabura.There was a chief of staff killed by a bullet in the forehead.
But a thousand partisans made their way through the front line. And only later, when they recalled moments of the mysterious “white” drama, when they heard the snow creaking under the soles of the condemned, and when it was necessary to look the harsh truth in the eye, they averted their gaze.
In early October, a battered biplane departed from their field airfield to cross the front line with I. Egupov, their brigade commander. They believed that the commander was flying for the award. Instead, they learned that he had been arrested and charged with the incredible.The mind simply refused to understand that this just, demanding soldier who led them into battle, risked his life in suicide operations, rushed at the Nazis with the hatred of a man who was abused in concentration camps, was a traitor, a scoundrel, an enemy agent who in everything that he experienced with them, pretending to be able to corrupt the brigade from the inside, provoke disputes between Slovaks and Russians and quarrel the Soviet commanders. The mysterious deaths of Major Rokossovsky, Lieutenant Yemelyanov, Kostya and Dima, who had previously commanded other partisan groups – should all this have been his black deed? The heart did not agree.Consciousness, however, ordered: believe! After all, how many other truths did people believe in those days!
A month later, their comrades were arrested, with whom they bore the burden of the campaigns, the torment of retreats, the freedom of rest. But there was no person who would raise a hand against them. They were forced to send for people to a remote detachment named after Pozharsky, and only they tied up Sasha Lunev, Misha Tsepkov, Tolya Kurachev and the youngest, Kolya Bakhmutovsky, and took them on a cart like robbers. Their martyr’s groans, wild cries were heard from the dugout for a long time, until the very night, when burned with a red-hot iron, covered with wounds, they admitted that they were Soviet prisoners, recruited by the Germans, participants in anti-partisan operations in Poland and Ukraine, graduated from the Dresden Gestapo school, exiled from the distribution camp in Vienna to the labor camp in Orava.To join one or another partisan group, just like Yegupov, their commander. ”
Tsaplintsev, putting aside the sheets, swore dirty and thought: “How much slack was in that life not only with us, but even with them! Who could have believed these “confessions” under torture? What normal person could agree that for some reason the “traitor Egupov” was scared not to follow the German instructions, and walking under bullets was not scary. And I understood from their conversation that they want to take us somewhere to their own people, to the “mainland”. “Look, they say, how he split!” They are about me, then. And I see that they are happy about this, they want to show me to their big bosses and that they are needed on earth, that they eat their bread for a reason.
And I was also glad about it then. I think they will show the authorities, everything will go on the right track. There are smarter people, I think they will figure out that we have no fault. Maybe they will let them go: the partisans, after all, are not some shit.They fought not by conscription, but of their own free will, not hiding under skirts! We, perhaps, should have been praised for this, and not burned with iron.
So I gave them their interest, as if I was a very significant person at Egupov’s – for some reason they connected all this with him.
At dawn we were led. We walked for a long time, I remember. Then they stopped – a large clearing in front appeared, as level as a table. And then they took out a walkie-talkie, turned it around and passed on something. And after 3 hours – the plane arrived for us. Roomy, took everyone.
Eating hunting is a passion! And they do not even think to feed us, even though they themselves have already cracked.
They did not remember this even after, when they brought us to the place, they immediately interrogated us. And despite the fact that the big bosses were already interrogating, and the principle, we see, is still the same here: screaming and scuffle. Nothing, I see, they are not interested in how it really was, who we are and what? On the contrary, they seem to be glad, it turns out, that we – they “betrayed”, even though we did not betray .. It is they, they have betrayed us!
I see it’s bad.Egupov, because of whom everything is spinning, they do not show us – no confrontation. Or maybe he was muzzled like Lyonka Dovgunets? We don’t know anything! I just look, we give them a rattle. But it became worse for us, as we turned everything back – we are already giving other testimonies: that we have never contacted any Germans, that honest partisans, like our commander, Egupov, and let him come here! They, of course, do not like the fact that they no longer know anything and do not want to understand what they need from us. They go straight into frenzy.How is it, they say, that you do not know anything ?! And in the mountains, in the forest, what did they say? .. And again pistols in the face. I see we only spoil the whole mass for them. Why, your own destiny is still alive, you won’t ruin it yourself, slander it yourself! We stand our ground. And to us again: “Oh, you, you sons of bitches, you are prostrate and so! Whose testimony is this? ” Poke pieces of paper in our faces, where we slandered ourselves. “We were scared, we say, that’s why they showed it in order to gain time.” “No-no, darlings, it just won’t work for you: why twist ?! Stop fooling around, confess: recruited ?! ”
Well, how many people can take? That means they held on.And then, as the head was completely numb from the pain, they agreed: okay, we’ll sign, just give me some water, we almost didn’t drink for a day. That’s how they persuaded us to sit for 40 years. To each, therefore, a gold piece. You know the rest: they were serving in Kolyma, together with the Vlasovites, spies. The order is there – according to the climate: severe. Dalstroy! Then the criminals lost two of us at cards. Kulkov himself died, an ulcer ruined him. But I – lived to see liberation. From bell to bell served: 3652 days. The amnesty did not affect me.Now what are you going to rehabilitate me? Or how? .. I heard that after the 20th Congress many people are reconsidering their cases. But after all, rehabilitation will not bring me back either health or teeth. And my wife did not wait for me, I live alone. And money is like money … And in August the Slovaks, as I read from the newspapers, will have a great national holiday. They will begin to remember everything … And we shot Schmidke at their place.
– Schmidke – we did not shoot, but they themselves, – objected Tsaplintsev with embarrassment in his soul.

– Call me Vasily Ivanovich, like Chapaeva, – the investigator gently introduced himself.
– I understand you, Vasily Ivanovich. Will you listen?
– With pleasure.
Batyuk lit a cigarette, exhaling smoke, said:
– So, so … After escaping from a German concentration camp in Poland, I moved to the High Tatras, to the then free territory of Slovakia. I was sheltered there by a peasant, forester Fritz Bobrovnitski. This is how it all began. The Slovaks decided to create another partisan detachment, which was already somewhere in the neighboring voivodeship from fugitive Russian convicts. Some senior lieutenant Yemelyanov, who escaped from a German concentration camp, commanded there, and named his detachment after Pugachev.
Old people familiar to Bobrovnitsky have heard that Soviet troops are already in Belarus, and somewhere they are approaching Poland. And the Germans are being driven everywhere. It looks like they say that the Germans will now occupy our Slovakia. So, probably, young Slovaks should gather in partisan detachments before it’s too late. The Slovak army alone cannot cope with the Germans. Yes, and the rich command it there. It is not known, they say, where else they will turn. In short, it is necessary to help – the Soviet Army, which liberates everyone; support her. And for this, they say, already now it is required to arm.The Russian commander would not hurt: their own people do not want to, and they have no experience. So the old men needed to know: if I would agree to take command. This is the conversation we had. I agreed. But I felt that the Slovaks, out of caution, did not dare to take full responsibility upon themselves. You never know what can happen, and how their idea will turn out later! It’s easier to blame strangers, if anything. They muddy the waters here, we have nothing to do with it. “Aliens” – you can then hide in the mountains. And you can’t hide all the Slovaks, and then you can’t get away from trouble.Russians are needed.
There were already a lot of Russians in Slovakia. They fled from the camps in which the Czechs served as guards. Those themselves helped them. Slightly convenient moment, and the Czechs “turned away.” Russian prisoners of war fled in twos and threes. The main thing is to swim across the Morava. And in Slovakia, they were already out of danger.
Tsaplintsev also smoked, listened without interrupting, although one question, the most important, he had from the very first words of Batyuk, well, right on his tongue: “How did you, Igor Konstantinich, manage to escape from Dachau?”But he kept silent – early. I listened and poured them into the glasses. They drank and drank in silence, and Batyuk continued on. But after the 5th glass, the colonel noticed that the interlocutor began to get tired – he was already talking reluctantly, sluggishly. And finally, he admitted that he had diabetes. Then the colonel invited him to rest:
– Let’s just sit – we’ll smoke, listen to music …
They were sitting, smoking. And Tsaplintsev suddenly switched to Korkin. Where the middle-aged couple in love was now sitting, Korkin was sitting yesterday. And opposite him – he, Colonel Tsaplintsev: continued the conversation interrupted in the summer.This conversation has now come to life in Tsaplintsev’s memory – all, down to the smallest details.

– I then served at the headquarters of the partisan movement in Lvov. This movement was commanded by General Strokach. And in the summer of 1944, the colonel of the Slovak army Talski, a tall, thin old man, flies to us, and we learn from him that their army is preparing for an uprising against the Germans and that they have already created and are operating in Eastern Slovakia partisan detachments.
And in the fall, when the Germans had already entered Slovakia, our headquarters decided to send me to Yegupov’s partisan detachment to check and get acquainted with the situation on the spot.We flew from Lviv. I flew with him on one U-2, and Talskiy on another. I already knew from him: the detachments have their own radios, so I took the ciphers with me, wrote down the wave numbers, the time of communication. All this was agreed, of course, with our headquarters in Lvov.
I had, as you probably guess, other instructions and instructions. From the words of Talskiy, we already knew: the people in the detachments were trained in different ways. It was possible that the Vlasovites, the crooks, and other rabble tried to get there. Or maybe – it is also possible – there were more important birds.Among the Slovaks, the head of their state security center, Colonel Dressler, was himself connected with German intelligence! So he just sent his people to the partisans. Especially some Gander did various things there. I had to check it all.
– Oleg Vasilievich, – Tsaplintsev interrupted, – well, did you at least somehow check Egupov himself, if you doubted him? Remember, I asked you to think about the assumption that Egupov was not in Dachau at all? Did you think? ..
– Of course I did.
– So what ?….
– And the fact that I remembered how I asked our headquarters counterintelligence in Zaporozhye to find out all the data about this Egupov in a coded telegram: who his parents were, what he worked for, well, and so on … did not have! Didn’t live …
Tsaplintsev was at first stunned by such impudence. I wanted to yell at Korkin: “Oh, you, what a bastard! Do you think everyone is fools ?! Do you think that if you are a Hero, then you are already permissible not only to slander an honest person from whom this heroic star was stolen, but also a stupid lie with an answer from Zaporozhye ?! ” But the next moment he restrained himself and decided to play along with Korkin, pretending to be a stupid “felt boot” and further:
– Is that even how ?…. And after that you … sent a radio message at night stating that … Egupov is a traitor? What text did you send on the radio? Could your radio operator read it?
Korkin cheered up:
– Well, what are you! .. The text was encrypted by me.
– Do you know, Oleg Vasilyevich, that Egupov is alive and was released in 1945 for lack of evidence of guilt?
– No, I don’t know that. – Korkin’s face tensed, the gaiety from his cheerful tenor voice evaporated as he finished a new lie: – Strange, why did he then … – And he fell silent.

– Of course I knew. General Timofey Amvrosievich Strokach introduced me to him: here, they say, get acquainted! This is the commander of the partisan detachment Egupov, to whom we are sending you. His real name is Batyuk. The Order of the Red Battle Banner, which he has been awarded for the second time, was issued to him with a certificate in his real name and surname, you know that. Fly together, now you will serve together.And he shook hands with us one by one.
– Okay, okay! The colonel grunted. And firmly staring into Batyuk’s eyes, he said: – And one more question. This is very important, Igor Konstantinovich, so I ask you to answer honestly … – the colonel hesitated, pondering how to ask his question more delicately.
– Ask, Comrade Colonel. I am nothing dishonest to you yet …
– Okay, okay, do not be offended! And the question is: have you been to Dachau? More precisely, from which concentration camp did you escape?
Batyuk broke into an embarrassed smile:
– That’s about Dachau, Comrade Colonel, I … lied.But – only not for you, but for the forester, who found me in his house; to pity him. I entered his house when he was absent. He was afraid that he would betray or drive away. How did you know about this ?! – Batyuk was surprised.
The Colonel laughed merrily, joyfully:
– Yes, I found out … From one scoundrel. But this is not the point now, but the fact that I will now bring this bastard to clean water! And for you – so I’m just sincerely glad that everything was so easily and simply explained. Forgive me, my dear man, that so much torment has gone to you because of our service in vain! I read your combat notebook-diary, read-al! And I’ll return it to you tomorrow with pleasure.Together with the orders I will return! There is nothing more to suspect or accuse you of! That’s what we now have to drink with you, the rest is an empty formality now. The main thing in the additional investigation was clarified: that you are a deserved partisan, and a scoundrel who slandered you … – the colonel stopped short and began to apologize again: – Wait, dear, I – now, just make an order to the waiter … – Tsaplintsev got up.
– Vasily Ivanovich, who is this bastard? I told him …
– But this … nothing can be done yet, Igor! This – I must prove it, otherwise I myself will be trampled from work.It’s me for joy, old fool, let it slip. And until the additional investigation is officially completed, don’t do anything yourself!

After a new bottle and mutual joy, their conversation became more cheerful. Tsaplintsev, having read Batyuk’s notes from his notebook about the military operations of the detachment in the Slansky mountains, said:
– I read your entire notebook, and I realized that Mount Shimonka, on which you settled, was in the center of a huge area that looked like a round clock, surrounded by two merging railways at junction stations.One, Presov – in the west, the other, Humenné – in the east, from which there is only a branch to the Soviet front. And you from Shimonka could see the whole picture: where the trains with the Germans are going, where are the bridges and tunnels. So yes?
– Exactly! – Batiuk agreed. – And we acted at night: and blew up where necessary, and simply carried the rails into the forest. They created such a traffic jam for them that they destroyed them there with their raids – in the thousands!
– Now it is clear why the command appreciated your actions so highly!
– That was later.And it all started with us, too, with a mess …
There were almost no weapons in the detachment, – said Batiuk, pushing the plate aside. – And there were already 800 of us by that time. My chief of staff, Korel, was connected with the Slovak underground communists, told me: a general uprising of the Slovak army and people is being prepared. Schmidke led the communists, he was shot after the war: he was slandered.
“I know,” said Tsaplintsev. – Rehabilitated posthumously.
– Yes, and so I knew from Korel: there was supposedly already an agreement that the Golianov chiefs of all garrisons from Central Slovakia, and the Malarovsky chiefs from Presov would come to us.But they themselves were not yet clear about everything – they quarreled over the leadership, because of the plans for an uprising. General Golian was an old leaven, from a noble family, he wanted to lead everything himself. And the communists did not want to let go of the initiative and insisted on their own: they offered their people to his headquarters, demanded that he supply us with weapons from his warehouses. And although he seems to be with us, he is also afraid of his general, Malar, who commanded the Slovak army in Presov – there he stood with his corps.In general, the confusion there was then complete – a mess, one might say. The leader from the Communist Party, Schmidke, flew to Moscow. And we – sit and wait by the sea for the weather.
I’m tired of being so “partisan”, I say to Korel: “Come on, Martyn – that’s what we called him, in our own way – let’s, I say, make a sortie to the Czech Republic. We’ll hit the Germans there, get at least some weapons. ” He agreed.
From that day, in fact, we began real active hostilities; the detachment became partisan in practice. After a month of fighting with the Germans – here and there, we attacked more at night, on small guards – and armed almost all of our people.And there are already fifteen hundred of us in the detachment! I had to consider it a compound and split it into separate units for mobility. A new commander was appointed to each of them. There were Slovaks, our guys, Czechs and Poles. Even 2 Frenchmen appeared from somewhere. Other detachments acted nearby, but there was no real coordination without Schmidke.
Well, life went on as usual. We were all young then, the blood was hot. And in the detachment there is only one woman – this Anka. She had true love with Korel, and to others it was only envy.And then she went … running around the farmsteads to the girls. Either one is not on day 3, then another. Is this order? And myself, I feel, is drawn to sweetheart, even though I was married. What is the reasoning in the war? Today – alive, and tomorrow – it is not known what will happen. So they did not deny themselves the desire to live. On the contrary, more and more eagerly were made for life. Anka walks in front of everyone, like a sweet apple, all filled with juice. She is wearing a woolen breeches – tight-fitting: all the charms, all the halves are visible. And my partisans, I see, are already grinding their teeth, looking at this girl.Although our life is wolfish – today it’s full, tomorrow it’s not, but it’s not like in the regular army at the front, where it’s even more terrible every day – the battles are not the same as ours, but across the entire width of the front! There is no time for women, when death simply walks through all the fields. What to do? And she, I already feel, hates me too. You know, women have a flair for ill will, like dogs: you don’t even seem to show it, but she already knows how you feel about her.
And I decided to take her along with the detachment on a mission. Some kind of “partisan” detachment appeared near Bardeyev in quotation marks: they robbed several huts there, raped three women, killed their men, and disappeared.
My scouts still tracked them down. They say that the detachment is small, about 30 people in total. Armed. They work under the partisans, but they themselves – some Vlasovite, some of the rich Slovaks. But it looks like they were all Dressler’s people. I was there like that – I headed the center of state security in Slovakia. It was he who practiced such “partisan” detachments in order to arouse the hatred of the local population towards us and to dishonor the entire partisan movement.
I took Martyn with me. I think, let him see, you bitch cat, how his “partisan” will behave in business.We still didn’t have a radio – why do we need a radio operator? So I decided to show it to him when the firing from machine guns goes off, as a girl puts on her fashionable officer pants. Maybe, I think, then he will agree with me: he will turn her from the detachment.
No sooner said than done. I picked up another fifty guys who were more experienced, and we went in search.
Found them only in the evening, when they kindled bonfires on the mountain. We began to carefully approach them. I looked, Anka was following Martyn, everyone was alert, turned white. Well, I think everything is in order: we will take these “partisans” now, and this “radio operator” is with us for the last time.
We crept quite close – already the flame of fires between the trees can be seen, figures of people. And, we see, they did not set up any outposts, nor even a patrol: we checked it out. And they approached them silently and at once from all sides.
I no longer looked after Anka – I had no time for that – the guys had, and even then their teeth chattered from nervous tension. We see: they are sitting with weapons, who wants to die? And I also had a special task: I should be the first to jump out to them – so we agreed in advance. I jumped out to the bandits from behind the bushes and shouted, as if with joy:
– Brothers! Yes, these are their own – the partisans!
They all jumped up, and to me.Surrounded, staring. In my opinion, they were frightened, even though I was alone.
The whole calculation was based on this. Distracted, it means that they are all on me, and my guys took them here in the ring. Martyn commanded in Slovak:
– Hands up! Don `t move!
– Drop your weapon! – added Anka. In general, everything went smoothly, without a single shot – we were even surprised afterwards.
We tied their hands behind them and drove them down to Bardeev. They brought me only in the morning. Everyone is tired, hungry, but you won’t go to the huts, you won’t leave these bandits.
We are standing. We are waiting for the people to gather. But the people are not coming, they have locked themselves on the bolts and are sitting; for some reason they were afraid to go out. Here Anka came in handy. I went to the huts to invite everyone to the square. They were not afraid of her – a woman after all. They believed and went out.
– Did these rob you? – we ask the peasants.
– They … – the women nod.
We explained to them what kind of “partisans” they were, and again the question to everyone: what to do with them? Decide …
They conferred, and they say: shoot the scoundrels!
We took them away into the forest, and from the machine guns … Three, however, rushed to run, but unless you run away from the bullets.War is a nasty business.

In honor of the acquaintance of the chief of staff, Korel took out a palenka – vodka in our opinion, an appetizer that was found, and we started a conversation. I told them about the situation in the detachment: what did they do, with whom are they connected? They were interested in the news: what, they say, there, in Moscow? The conversation is, in general, ordinary. But the conversation with the radio operator – Anna called herself – I remember.This was when I got to know her separately: I watched the equipment, how it worked, and so on. And she began to complain to me about Egupov: she finds fault, they say, this and that, wants to expel her from the detachment. I did not understand then what and what, I realized only later. But she turned out to be a great radio operator – you could feel the school! But whose? It didn’t come right away either. And then she, apparently, just wanted to distract me. Say, not only has nothing to do with Egupov, but even in enmity with him.
– What did you find out … specifically? – asked Tsaplintsev, lighting up again with indignation in his soul.
– Well, of course! Egupov needed a radio operator to communicate with the Germans, right? So they gave him … a woman. So that there is no suspicion. Moreover, in a “quarrel”. In my opinion, it is clear.
– Okay, let’s say. And what then is the role of Korel?
– None. The lieutenant was in love with her for real. I tell you, there was a woman with juice! And at some stage, apparently, he began to interfere with her. Or maybe he found out something about her affairs – by accident. Could give it out. It was necessary to remove it …

And yesterday, in the end, everything seemed to be in his favor … Although he did not like my “consolation” when he pretended to sigh that he could not go to the Slovaks for their holiday in Bratislava because of my summons for further investigation. Wow, and I consoled him! “Why, they don’t like you there, Oleg Vasilievich!” “How do you know?!.” Tomorrow I’ll explain to you, son of a bitch, where from! And I will ask, with whose face the monument stands on the hill … ”
Batyuk suddenly turned white like a wall, and with an escaping groan, he pulled the colonel away from his thoughts about Korkin.He was alarmed:
– Igor Konstantinovich, what’s the matter with you ?!

– Oleg Vasilyevich, here I have it, – he nodded at the tape recorder, – there is testimony from one of the witnesses who told me that you were in Yegupov’s detachment began with extrajudicial executions. What do you say to that?
Korkin turned pale, but answered calmly:
– Why from the extrajudicial? Of course, there was no exit session – the situation did not allow even time, but we established their guilt.With witnesses. The partisans were present when I unraveled this case. Like witnesses, or something. And the verdict was. So we followed the laws there as well. Do you think if I ordered the execution of two Slovaks innocently, it would have gone there? .. We were on their territory! Yes, they would use us … However, nothing happened. Korel himself – their officer – was present. But after that, everyone felt that their partisanship – in the sense of discipline – was over, and military discipline began. Yes, and Egupov since then tried to be friends with me.True, I did not yet have evidence against him, and did not suspect him. Later, when I began to compare the facts, something seemed strange. But I didn’t pay attention right away, although in Lvov I was warned about vigilance. This was my main task: to check people.
And then it became easier to notice everything: I found one guy there. Komsomolets, from Kharkov – decisive, fighting. I appointed him to my adjutant. He knew people, and where a little something – I already know. And in the sense of the setting, and in the sense of relations between people.
This is how, gradually, I delved into all the affairs of the detachment. The Slovak army was preparing for an uprising. It was necessary to agree on joint actions. General Malar by that time already felt that the Soviet army, not Hitler, would win. And he also sought rapprochement with us. Colonel Talskiy – his assistant – visited us in Lvov on his instructions. So we already knew about the general’s mood.
However, I had to go and agree with him about everything specifically. Talskiy conveyed through his people that Malar was waiting for us.
Yegupov went to negotiations with two commanders. I slipped them Grabovoi into the bargain. To know later: how it was there and what?
– Oleg Vasilievich, – Tsaplintsev interrupted, – and where is this Grabovoi now, don’t you know?

What did he know there: ask for directions, ask for bread, something about weapons, that’s all his vocabulary.It was only later that Yegupov himself told him that they had not really agreed to anything. Malar, they say, referred to the fact that all issues are not decided by him, but by General Golian, who wants to command the rebel troops. And Golian was already in Banska Bystrica! As for the weapon, there is also no clarity: they will give it, will they not? So Egupov explained to Grabovoi. We came back, one might say, with nothing. Only then did they learn that the general uprising was scheduled for August 30th. And who will lead it, whether the communists, or Golian, remains unknown.Egupov said that there were some disagreements in the army, but because of what, he did not understand. Malar, they say, was hiding something or did not want to let the partisans into it.
And then, on the day of the uprising itself, we suddenly learn that this Malar betrayed us: he spoke out, you bastard, on the radio with the appeal: “Stop! Around the march! With this uprising, we can destroy Slovakia, we are a small country … ”Something like that. In short, he renounced the uprising and even declared: “Why do we need a revolution?” And he gave the order to the troops: not to provide any resistance to the Germans entering the country, and to the partisans to fight back.
What was there to do after that? I contacted Lviv by radio. From there they report that they already know about Malar’s speech – they also listened. But the uprising will still be; that about this – there is an agreement with Golian.
Golian actually gave the order to his army to smash the Germans. True, they defeated him himself, but at least he kept his word!
When I deciphered all this, I thought: did Egupov know that Malar was not going to join the uprising? And if he did, then why didn’t he? And what kind of person is he in general?
– Wait, – Tsaplintsev interrupted Korkina, delighted, – listen to me now!
– I am listening to you attentively …
– I asked you at the restaurant yesterday if you knew that Egupov was alive and acquitted.You answered me negatively. So?

CITY HOSPITAL

On the twenty-sixth day of the war, the first batch of wounded arrived in Borovichi.And in the quiet rear city, sompled from the July heat, the front was breathing icy breath. On some days, up to a thousand soldiers and officers with bullet and shrapnel wounds, with burns and contusions of varying severity, arrived in the heating huts, equipped with two tiers of wooden bunks. Here they were received and, according to the nature of the wounds, they were given first aid and transported to hospitals.
The famous Soviet doctor Alexander Vishnevsky called Borovichi “City-Hospital”. As the chief surgeon of the Volkhov front, Alexander Aleksandrovich often came here “on a state need.”This is not surprising – four mobile, twenty-two evacuation hospitals and three battalions for convalescents were stationed in the city. The best buildings were given for them: schools, hospitals, residential buildings, colleges, technical schools, the only hotel in the city, a monastery, the House of Pioneers and even a restaurant … They were also located in the countryside. In Yegle, for example. “I am going to Borovichi – there I have a department for the wounded of the heart …” – in a military manner, he briefly noted in his diaries and described in detail the progress of the recovery of complex wounded, many of whom the surgeon Vishnevsky operated personally.
The summer of 1942 was especially difficult, when the soldiers of the 2nd Shock Army, who had emerged from the encirclement near Myasny Bor, began to enter the city. In them, wounded, emaciated, dirty and sick, life barely glimmered. They rescued and nursed even the weakest and most hopeless. This is evidenced by the dry figures of medical statistics: eighty percent of the seventy-odd thousand people who went through the Borovichi hospitals have returned to duty. But doctors, alas, are not omnipotent when wounds, as they say now, “are not compatible with life.”About four thousand soldiers and officers remained forever in mass graves at the city cemetery.
In April 1942, Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Vishnevsky wrote in his diary: “I observed the unloading of a sanitary meeting in Borovichi. It goes well. The orderlies have trained. The machines are quickly removed and loaded. There is enough transport. The sorting hospital is well organized; clearly, quickly assistance is provided to those who are heavy on the way, all the wounded undergo sanitary treatment. ”
The wounded in Borovichi were nursed by the entire district.From the city and the village they were sent food and medicines, read them newspapers, wrote letters for them to relatives, organized concerts of amateur performances. The most “heavy” and weak ones needed donor blood. Mainly girls and women became donors. By 1943, as the newspaper Krasnaya Iskra noted at that time, there were more than five thousand of them. Two hundred donors were in reserve. But the needs of the front were so great that a modest donor station, transformed into a republican mobile blood transfusion station, had to work to its limit.In the first months of the war, the flow of the wounded on other days reached a thousand people. The city coped with this, which at times seemed daunting task. A total of about seventy thousand people passed through the hospitals stationed in Borovichi. Eighty percent of the wounded returned to duty.
All this seemed to be self-evident during the war, and the work of doctors, nurses, nurses, nannies, cooks, storekeepers, caretakers, grooms, drivers, hairdressers, stokers and cleaners for the time being, remained in the shadows.They received letters from the front, they were thanked by the fighters who had been rescued by them, but they were rarely remembered on solemn dates, rarely paid tribute to their quiet everyday dedication.

“June 30, 42. I arrived. Shaved, ate, and together with Pesis and Makarov went to the commander. It turned out that Meretskov and Zaporozhets had left for Moscow. We went to Kochetkov, he ordered to convene a meeting of surgeons in Borovichi on July 9.
“July 6th. In the morning in Borovichi I checked all the reports. I had to work very hard. The meeting will be at the city theater. There is an exhibition, but, as luck would have it, the diagrams are distorted. I had to redo it. ”

The chief front-line surgeon had enough cases in Borovichi. I operated on him most often. And I assisted them: I gave the instrument, gave anesthesia … Usually doctors were invited to such operations, and along the way, Alexander Alexandrovich told the surgeons what he would do and why. He worked beautifully, clearly, without fuss. He demanded the same from the medical staff.We loved him. He could joke, and praise, and scold. If he scolded, then for the cause, and did not even scold, but inspired, insisted, advised. And he pitied us. We felt it. The wounded loved him too. He never refused to help anyone. Even enemies. The seriously wounded Germans lay in our basement, where the school locker room is now located. They received the same medical care as our children. A special order was issued to this effect. They performed operations, bandages, and fed them from a common cauldron.I also had to bandage them. There was no longer hatred for them, the weak and sick, but disgust was. And bewilderment: what drove them to a foreign country, what made them kill and rob?
Good is not forgotten. There is no statute of limitations for him. Triangles of grateful soldiers’ letters with greetings to doctors, nurses, nannies, caretakers, cooks flew to Borovichi from different fronts, armies, divisions and regiments … After the war, such letters continued for a long time from different parts of our immense state.

There were other addressees as well. Several years ago, a letter was sent to the chief physician of the city hospital from the German city of Hamburg, typed on a typewriter with slight deviations from Russian grammar.It was written by one of those Germans who were rescued by Russian doctors and nurses. He was not in hospital No. 2747 during those war years. He is one of the prisoners of war who ended up in Borovichi later. Here is his letter:
“Dear Mr. Doctor, after the Second World War I was taken prisoner and at first was in a mine camp for German prisoners of war in Borovichi. In June 1946, I fell ill with paratyphoid fever. There I lay for a month in an isolated room for the sick. When the disease approached its climax, our Russian doctor promised me to put me in the hospital.And so it happened that I was transported on July 2, 1946, to the city hospital in your city. Doctors examined with the result: “abdominal abscess in the size of a fist.” After that, I was immediately transferred to the operating room, where a tall, blond, beautiful doctor, alone, without any help, performed the operation and this became the salvation of my life for me. I will never forget how it happened. Even today I still thank everyone who helped save my life. I must also say that there was the only such incident in the camp – no one else was released.In my case, the translator probably helped, because I also worked as a translator in the camp. I speak Russian. I was born in old St. Petersburg. Probably, now there will not be those who are described above, but I think it will be interesting for you to receive such a message.

Wilhelm Wingler, unknown to us, whose address and telephone number appeared at the end of this lengthy message, was not alone in this strange, but understandable desire to find people who showed kindness and mercy to them, their enemies.Komsomolskaya Pravda published a letter from Germany, the author of which was looking for a Russian paramedic from Borovichi, who had once saved his life. He remembered nothing, except that her name was Katya. Is it conceivable to find a person who once flashed like a grain of sand in the whirlpool of a great war? He himself, probably, was aware of the futility of his searches, and yet … Yet he sent this letter, filled with gratitude, to who knows where. Among the hundreds or even thousands of women with the ordinary Russian name Katya, who carefully read or just skimmed through this letter, there was not only the one to whom it was addressed…
There was another hospital in Borovichi – the hospital for prisoners of war No. 3810. It was located on the territory of the Holy Spirit Monastery. The guards inside the monastery were guarded by female escorts. The Germans, Hungarians, Italians who fought against us were in the cells adapted for the chambers. In the autumn of 1944, a large batch of Polish internees was brought here. Both they and former enemies in this hospital were patiently treated and nursed. As their own.

There are no sleepy ones in the forest, there are dead people, and for them these concepts lost their force on the day and hour when life left them, leaving them a woeful lot to rest forever in the sands and loams of a temporary churchyard with rows of birch crosses, similar to each other, like prisoners. Here they would lie with their head to the east and their feet to the west, from where they had come uninvited and where they were not destined to return.
But the war does not end with the victory of some and the defeat of others.Its echoes will trouble us for a long time, reminding us how unreliable and fragile the world is. Rivers of spilled blood sweep away moral barriers, and the intoxication of unbridled permissiveness hits the head – there is nothing more terrible and dangerous than this non-fermented hop, forcing people unstable with their minds to do what they did not even dare to think of until recently. There are more than enough confirmations of this today: the scale of crime and violence, cruel senseless wars, which seem to have neither end nor edge …
At this bloody “feast”, the desecration of other people’s graves (those of the enemy’s – not our own!) Seems a trifle, not worthy of attention.But how easy it is to be deceived without seeing evil in actions that seem to threaten no one now! But they, if you think about it, are the harbingers of future troubles and upheavals.
It would seem, well, what do we care about the remains of the unknown Erichs and Hans, who served their terms in prisoner-of-war camps and died there from wounds and illnesses, and never lived to get rid of captivity? And what do we care about the fact that some Elsa and Charlotte did not wait for their house? Do not burn out your grief. But it was not for nothing that Dostoevsky called the Russians a very fragile hatred.At the sight of a dirty, ragged “conqueror” with a hopeless melancholy frozen in his eyes, a pity-free Slavic heart trembles with pity, and now they offer him a piece of bread or a boiled potato: eat, you wretch, but remember the good …

Poles from the Home Army, who spent several years in Soviet camps after the war, had no reason to remember these far from the best years of their lives and return to where they suffered beyond all measure, in order to once again experience what would be the most reasonable forget, once and for all.

But people shrugged their shoulders: we don’t remember, we don’t know, recently we live here… This was repeated everywhere they went. Near Borovichi, on the Ustye, with difficulty they found the old teacher and did not let her go for a long time, questioning and interrupting each other. But is it conceivable to return the past, is it conceivable to find everything that is left there? It froze in the faces of photographs that had turned yellow with age, in the faded cursive writing of old letters, in the sad silence of museums and memorial rooms.
From the stand in the Borovichi Museum of Local Lore, through the thickness of the past years, the clear-eyed Liza Samsonova smiles white-toothed. Alas, the road back is marked not by milestones, but by milestones of losses and losses. And the train in the past never comes on schedule. The long-awaited meeting did not take place, although Liza Samsonova did not leave anywhere, and in Borovichi it was not difficult to inquire about her. According to the tenacious Soviet traditions, everything is erected on human bones: residential buildings, dachas, and pompous administrative mansions… As if there is no other land besides the one that was given to the dead for eternal shelter.
But what to say about other people’s graves, when a bulldozer flies over his tank, embodying the cult of dull iron power. A thoughtless war with the dead comes at a great cost to the living. People become callous and hardened, for whom there is nothing sacred. It costs them nothing to come to a forgotten military grave with a crowbar and a shovel and slowly, with smoke breaks, unearth the abandoned graves, since no one in the forest will see, grab the hand, and shame.
And such burial places on our land are countless. One of them is hiding in the wilderness, away from the well-worn roads. You will not immediately understand that the bumps overgrown with moss and lingonberry are not bumps at all, but the graves of the unfortunate prisoners who found their last convict shelter in the pine forest behind Opechensky Posad. And it is over them that lilac corollas of sleep-grass bloom in the spring. But neither sleep nor peace descends on this sinful earth. Forest prison graveyard, as if dug up by moles. Underfoot, next to scraps of barbed wire, whitewashed human bones terribly white with rains.The GULAG remains a GULAG even for the dead, and after death, it does not soften to the fate of its former inhabitants.

This led to the forest a new wave of coffin thieves – so contemptuously called in the old days the destroyers of other people’s graves. If the former were somehow hiding, were afraid, without advertising their godly occupation, the latter approached the matter cynically and simply, drove a car to the forest graveyard and shoveled the sandy hillock along and across the artel, without even bothering to hide the traces of their “dog work”.

The letter was written by the daughter of a Polish soldier who died in Camp 207.With the kind permission of Galina Aleksandrovna, we present it almost in full.

“Dear Galina!
Several months have passed since my stay in Borovichi, and I constantly return with thoughts and memories to these days. I should have written this letter a long time ago, but for me writing in Russian is a problem, a difficult task.
I remember, I look at the pictures, I think. And, to my amazement, these memories bring sadness to the places and people I met there.This excursion was the most important event in my life. Until now, Borovichi was only a point on the map, but now it has become a beautiful city familiar to me, where hospitable, supportive people live. Your hospitality and cordiality have worked a miracle: there is no bitterness in my heart, I calmly think about this hill above the Msta River, where my father’s ashes rest under the birches. I was there. She prayed and cried over this symbolic grave, brought a handful of earth to Poland – the requirement of her daughter’s heart was fulfilled.
November 1 and 2 in Poland – a holiday in memory of the dead.These days, there were many flowers and lights of memory at the cemetery of Soviet soldiers in Melts. Old people who remember the war came with flowers and candles, but I also saw many young people with children. On this day, we remembered not only about our loved ones and their graves, but also about everyone who died on our land.
Jerzy Bar wrote to me that there were flowers and memory lights in Jogla on the first of November. I was very much comforted by those.

The barracks “villages” of the once mighty GULAG, scattered across the near and distant environs of Borovichi, have long disappeared. In their place, coniferous forests rustle gloomily, abandoned quarries and wastelands rustle with withered grass.
