What is a Quilting Sewing Machine?

The best sewing machines for quilting allow a user to make blocks that are 4 – 6 inches and allows for fast, efficient quilting. Fabric is hand-fed into the quilting machine. The fabric is pinned before starting, and pins are removed from the layers of fabric as the sandwich is being sewn.

Long-arm machines are the best for quilting. They are allow for much larger quilts to be made with tables being 10’ to 14’ wide. However, they are very expensive. The best sewing machine for quilting does not have to be expensive. Lots of the models listed in these reviews are inexpensive.

Fabric
remains in place when using a long-arm machine while the machine moves around.

Sewing machines can also be used for quilting, and these hybrid machines require a unique set up process to ensure that the end-product comes out with the best results. They are a great entry-level option before you research quilting reviews and buy an expensive quilting machine.

What Type of Sewing Machine is Best for Quilting?

The biggest question is what features should you consider when researching the best sewing machine for quilting?

Features will be what make up the main difference from one sewing machine to the next.

The best sewing machine for quilting will include:

  • Throat space. The throat space needs to be large. This allows more space to work with your quilt or larger craft projects.
  • Table. An extended table will allow you to work on quilts with the best freedom possible.
  • Thread cutter. Built-in thread cutters add to the versatility of the sewing machine.
  • Decorative stitches. Not a must-have, but decorative stitches allow you to add designs to your quilting pattern.
  • Quilting stitches. Some machines will include quilting stitches, such as the tie-off stitch or the stay stitch.
  • Frame. Many models, such as the Brother SE400 have 4” x 4” embroidery machine frames which come in handy when quilting.
  • Needle position. Sewing machines that allow for the needle position to be set to the up or down position are best for quilters. This stitching feature allows a quilter to have more freedom when making their quilt.

The best and most important features of a sewing machine for quilting that you’ll want to focus on are throat space, table size and the quilting stitches. While the other features are nice additions, they’re not going to make or break your quilting.

How to Set your Sewing Machine for Quilting

You’ll
need to set your sewing machine’s settings differently when you’re planning on
quilting with the machine. A few of the must-set settings that will make your
quilting experience faster and more efficient are:

1. Make sure your quilting sewing machine is well oiled

Even the best sewing machines need to be well oiled. It is one of the most important steps that a beginner sewer seems to overlook. A sewing machine for quilting has a lot of moving parts, so it’s important to oil the machine as much as three times per week if you’re using the sewing machine daily.

Otherwise, you’ll want to oil the sewing machine after 3 or 4 intense uses. Your sewing machine will perform best when it is well oiled.

If you haven’t used your sewing machine in a while, you may want to oil it up to ensure that it’s running smoothly. The sewing machine manufacturer may also have a timeline on how often the machine should be oiled. Follow these guidelines if you want to extend the lifespan of your sewing machine and keep it performing it’s best.

You should use sewing machine oil that the manufacturer recommends for best results.

While
you’re at it, you’ll also want to clean your sewing machine of any loose thread
and debris that may have made its way into the machine.

2. Work in a large enough space

Space is important when quilting, and when you don’t work in a large enough space, you’ll have a harder time quilting. Make sure that the sewing machine’s table is large enough, and you’ll also want to make sure the space is clear. It’s best to have a dedicated area to work in if you can.

3. Decrease the stitch speed

Fast stitch speeds are great when trying to sew a project or quilt quickly, but there’s a problem: control. You can sew at rapid speeds, but when quilting, you’ll want to reduce the sewing machine’s speed down from the top speed. You will have the best control of your fabric when at a slower speed setting.

Beginners will make a lot of mistakes when quilting at top speeds, and even advanced quilters sometimes have issues.

You always want to slow your sewing machine’s stitching speed down to quilt properly.

4. Select the right quilting machine foot

You’ll
want to pick the right quilting foot for the job. You may have one of the
following feet available, although they’re all the same:

  • Darning foot
  • Hopping foot
  • Free motion foot

Installation can be difficult, so it’s best to read the instructions that came with the sewing machine or darning foot to guide you.

5. Lower the feed dog

Feed dogs should be lowered, and this is usually done with a lever or a button.

6. Decrease the length of the stitch

Stitch
lengths are also important, so you’ll want to set the length to zero.  When you set the length to zero, you’ll cause
the feed dogs to stop moving while they’re lowered or covered. The length will
now correspond to the needle speed and how fast you move the quilting blocks by
hand.

7. Turn off the thread cutter

Thread
cutters come in handy when you master quilting on a sewing machine, but they
should be disabled when you’re working on your quilt. You need to have enough
of a tail to be able to clip off the thread as close to the quilt as possible.

8. Stop the down needle

When
the needle is down, it allows you to turn the quilting blocks and reposition
without losing control. The stop down needle is ideal for quilting, and it’s
one of the best features you can find in a newer sewing machine.

9. Select the correct stitch plate

The
stitch plate that you choose to use is very important. A straight stitch plate
with a straight stitch pressure foot is often ideal. If your machine does not come
with these plates, you’ll want to see if you can purchase them as an additional
accessory.

10. Check the walking foot pressure

You
may, or may not, have to adjust the walking foot pressure. You’ll find out how
to do this in your sewing machine’s instruction manual.

11. Disable the fix stitch

Fix stitches are a nice addition to any sewing machine, but they’re horrible for actually quilting. These stitches should be disabled so that you don’t end up with a quilt that has tie knots on them.

Buying Guide

Need a quilting machine but don’t know where to start? Our sewing machine buying guide can help you find the right machine for your skill level, needs and budget. The best sewing and quilting machine for you, or someone completely new to sewing, will be very different from someone else’s best choice.

There are high-end machines with features that some people will never actually use. But the right person may use these features often if they’re working on more varied crafting projects. Make sure to read over the reviews before making a decision.

1. Quilting Sewing Machine Throat Space

Throat space should be large enough for a quilt. You’ll find that the throat space will determine if the machine is long-, mid- or short-arm in size. The larger the throat space the better. A general size chart is:

  • Short-arm – 12″ or less
  • Mid-arm – 12″ – 17”
  • Long-arm – 18″ or greater

Short-arm machines are the least expensive while long-arm machines are the most expensive.

2. Responsive Stitch Regulator

Stitch regulators that are responsive allow you to control your stitch speed. You can do this without a stitching regulator, by moving your hands with the quilt and controlling the speed of the needle. It is best when you can have tight control over your stitch speed.

3. Needle Speed or SPM

Stitches
per minute, or SPM, is a gimmick that a lot of manufactures use to make
consumers think that they can quilt faster. Precision speed control is needed
for quilting, and you need to be able to adjust the needle speed to a speed
that you can control.

Speed
controls allow you to rely less on your machine’s foot pedal and continue
quilting at a sufficient speed.

4. Simplistic Thread Path

When
threading the quilting machine, you want as simple of a thread path as
possible. You’ll be able to thread the machine faster and rethread quicker.

5. Table and Free Arm Area

The table and free arm area need to be large enough for the quilt that you’re making. A long-arm machine is often best because it allows for that wide throat space needed for larger quilts. Table extensions are a great addition because quilters need a flat table area. This is essential for free motion quilting.

6. Bobbin Winding and Needle Threading

Always,
no matter which machine you choose, look for ease of bobbin winding and needle
threading. Self-threading machines are ideal, and an automatic bobbin winding
machine will save you time and frustration.

While
not a necessity, these two features will make it faster to start quilting.

7. Vibration

Vibration
when quilting over a long period of time is very uncomfortable. You’ll find
that stitch regulators can make this vibration worse. When vibration is high,
it’s difficult to follow and one method to avoid this is felt pads.

A
lot of people put felt pads under the edge of their machine to stop vibration.

When going through reviews, see if anyone mentions vibration from the machine. The vibration makes it harder to follow a path for the new quilter. You can also purchase vibration pads which are best when trying to reduce your machine’s vibration level. Heavy duty sewing machines will stay in place while you work.

8. Features

Key
features that can help make your quilting experience better, include:

  • Adjustable stitch speeds to slow stitches down to
    controllable levels
  • Automatic threading options and bobbin winding
  • Stitch length adjustments so that you can change the length
    to “0”
  • Needle stop down feature to help with the repositioning of
    the needle
  • Extension tables to allow for the large quilt area needed for
    larger projects
  • Bed that reduces vibration when quilting
  • Quilting stitches built into the machine to make quilting
    more versatile
  • Start or stop buttons for the machine
  • Easy feed system that allows for quick feed dog changes

Of
course, you should also consider the accessories that come with the machine.
Feed dogs will be a major plus because you’ll need to change the feed dog when
quilting.

Well-Known Brands Will Have Options for Everyone

Some retailers offer only high-end sewing machines, or they have the high-end models from a certain manufacturer. Amazon and other retailers will have sewing machines for all price ranges.

A few of the best brands to consider (and this is not an exhaustive list) include:

You’ll
find a lot of great models from all of these brands, and they stick by their
products with superb warranties and quality.

You may also find some models that offer free classes online. Some models may also be sold at authorized dealers only, so you may not be able to find them at your typical, local dealer.

Speaking
of warranty, you want to make sure that there’s a warranty offered on any
sewing machine you purchase. The warranty will allow you to return the machine
or have it fixed if something is wrong with it – sewing machines do have
defects.

There
should also be a repair policy, and this may require a call to the
manufacturer. You want to know whether or not you need to send the sewing
machine back to the manufacturer for a repair or if you can send it to a local
repair center.

Technicians
that aren’t factory-authorized may result in you voiding the warranty.

Choosing the Right Sewing Machine Type

One of the first questions you should be asking is: what type of sewing machine do I need? When you figure out the type, you’ll be narrowing down your choices a lot. There are quite a few types of sewing machines offered:

  • Manual. A manual sewing machine is probably not what you want. Manual sewing machines are the most basic. These machines slow down the sewing process a lot, but the lack of electrical components make these sewing machines less-likely to breakdown. There is a foot pedal that is used to run the machine.
  • Electronic. An electronic sewing machine is one that has a single motor, and the motor will power the needle. You will still be using an electronic foot pedal, but you’ll also have the comfort of adjusting speeds and settings electronically. Your hands will be freed up using an electronic model, allowing you to control fabrics with just your hands.
  • Computerized. The computerized sewing machines are making a major push to consumers, and they’re filled with features and more than enough stitch options. These models will have LED or LCD displays, and they have options for automatic tension settings and they can also remember settings for a few sewing projects. Designs may even be created and imported into the machine’s memory.
  • Overlocker. An overlocker is an advanced sewing machine, and they’re meant for seaming, hemming and edging. Sewing and cutting of edges are automatic, and thick seams are much easier to create with an overlocker machine. You may also call these sewing machines sergers.

There
are other advanced machines, and some will also offer embroidery options, which
is great if you would like to use embroidery on your pillowcases, clothes or
even bedspreads.

Features That You’ll Want to Consider

What features do you need on your quilting machine? It really depends. Will you be sewing clothes, or will you be trying to make jeans or sew through canvas? Canvas and denim will be very difficult for a basic sewing machine to handle.

You need to pick a sewing machine that is able to sew through your desired fabrics, and remember, you’ll need a suitable needle to handle these fabrics. The best quilting machines can handle multiple layers of fabric with ease.

Features
that you should consider are:

  • Buttonholes. Making buttonholes on your own is difficult, but some machines allow for an automatic buttonhole. This will allow you to sew a buttonhole in one-step in many cases.
  • Width and Length. Can you adjust the width and length of the stitch? This, along with tension control, will give you a variety of options for your projects.
  • Needle Threader. A built-in needle threader is not a necessity, but it will help a lot. Threading faster and easier means that you’ll be able to start your next project without stabbing your finger while trying to thread the needle.
  • Drop-in Bobbin. Bobbin systems can be complicated, and a top loading, drop-in bobbin is a great feature that reduces all of the steps you need to take when the bobbin is on the front of the machine behind a casing.
  • Free arm. A free arm allows you to sew hems and sleeves as well as narrow pieces.
  • Weight. If you are wanting to quilt with your machine then you want a model that isn’t going to tip over when you are working with long and heavy fabrics. Something that is at least 25 lbs will provide you with the most stability.

These are just the basic features that you’ll want to search for. You may also want the following features even if they’re not completely necessary:

  • Stitch options
  • Tension adjustment
  • Speed control
  • Needle position
  • Cute design

If
you’re new to sewing, you may also want a machine that includes a few different
needles and presser feet. These extras will allow you to get started with your
sewing faster without having to buy a bunch of extra accessories in the
process.

And one last thing before we close out our sewing machine buying guide: don’t forget to read reviews. Reviews will help you eliminate sewing machine options that may not be the best choice for you.

How to Care for Your Sewing Quilting Machine

If you want your sewing machine, quilter or serger to last, you need to care for it properly. Even the best sewing machine for quilting needs some love and attention for them to run properly in the long-term. Thankfully caring for them is pretty simple:

1. Change your needle

Over time, sewing needles become dull, and they can bend when fabric gets tugged. A fresh, sharp needle will improve your stitches and make your quilt projects look more professional.

Needles
should be changed on a regular basis. The more often you use your quilting
machine, the more often you should replace your needle. For best results, you
should replace your needle with each new project, or when you start sewing with
a new material that has special needs.

Failing
to change your needle can lead to damaged or puckered fabrics, broken threads,
and skipped or uneven stitches.

Check
the owner’s manual that came with your quilting machine for instructions on how
to change the needle. Most machines follow a similar process:

  • Loosen the needle set screw.
  • Pull the needle down and out of the needle bar.
  • Insert the new needle, and push it up until the butt of the
    needle hits the stop.
  • Tighten the needle set screw.

2. Keep Dust Away with a Cover

Dust might seem harmless, but over time, it will build up in your sewing machine. Small dust particles will get in the crevices of the machine. You want to keep as much dust out of your machine as much as possible.

The best and most simple solution is to cover your manual or computerized sewing machine.

Hard-
and soft-case covers are available that will allow you to properly keep dust
from accumulating inside of the machine’s delicate components.

3. Tighten Up All of the Screws and Components

Your sewing machine has a lot of screws and mechanical components that loosen up over time. While your machine may be well-put-together, these components will need to be tightened over the years. I recommend checking the screws every few months or when you give the machine a good cleaning.

Tightening
all of the components will ensure that the machine stays together well and can
reduce noise production, too.

4. Clean Your Machine Often

Your
sewing machine should come with an instruction manual, and you should follow
all of the tips that the manual recommends. There will be a section on
maintenance, and this is a serious section because it should cover tips that
aren’t listed in this article.

You’ll need to clean your machine, and this will also help with keeping dust from accumulating in the internal components of the sewing machine. This will keep the internal workings in the best condition possible.

A
few steps to take to clean your machine are:

  1. Unplug it. You never want
to clean the sewing machine while it’s plugged in or you may end up injuring
    yourself.
  2. Using a small lint brush,
you’ll want to clean out all of the small parts and components. This may
require you to remove the smaller components, including the presser foot,
    sewing plate and needle.
  3. Remove any lint and old
thread that may exist in the machine.

If
you remove the presser foot and bobbin and see thread stuck inside, you can try
removing it with the lint brush, or you can use a small set of tweezers to get
the pieces out.

People that sparsely use their sewing machine may only have to give it a really good cleaning every 6 – 12 months or after a few sewing projects. If you’re an avid seamstress like myself, you’ll need to clean your machine more often – monthly at the very least. It is best to clean it AT LEAST once per year.

Also,
don’t try blowing into your machine to clean out stuck debris. A lot of people
think that they’re actually helping by blowing into the machine, but this is
far from the truth. When you blow into the machine, you’ll be adding moisture
into the machine.

Instead, you’ll want to do it the right way with a can of compressed air. This works the best. You’ll find compressed air at most big retail chains or computer stores. Make a clean machine your passion.

5. Oil Up the Machine

Moving parts cause friction, and this friction will lead to heat buildup and eventually wear of your internal parts. You must lubricate even the best sewing machine properly to ensure that this heat is kept to a minimum and doesn’t cause the internal components to be damaged.

The
manual will be able to tell you which components need to be oiled up.

A
few of the components that will need to be oiled up may include:

  • Presser foot spring
  • Bobbin casing
  • Under the stitch plate

If
you can’t find your manual, you can always look for a tutorial online or a
YouTube video that will help.

6. Choose Good Thread and Needles

Low quality needles and thread tend to break a lot, and when they break, they can cause damage to your machine. The lower end thread is often coated with a wax material, and this material is really meant for when you’re sewing by hand rather than with a sewing machine. You will not get the best out of your machine if you are cheap with needles and thread.

The
coating is actually very bad for your sewing machine.

Instead, choose high quality needles and thread. These materials are more durable, don’t have coating and will leave fewer fibers in your machine.

There’s
not much else that you can do to care for your sewing machine aside from these
basic tips above. But there is one more tip that you should know: repair your
machine when needed.

A lot of people will know that something is off with their sewing machine. Perhaps the motor is making a loud sound or they hear grinding. Taking it to a technician will keep it in the best working condition.

7. Have it serviced regularly

Even the best sewing machine for quilting should be serviced once a year. More often if you are running a business.

Just like sewing machines, quilting machines have a lot of moving parts. Moving parts need lubrication, but this is not an easy thing to do on your own. Technicians are trained to maintain and service computerized quilting machines to bring them to their best working order.

When you bring your quilting sewing machine in for servicing, the technician will:

  • Remove the covers of all major components.
  • Clean out all lint, dust and oil.
  • Remove threads from the hand wheel and take up lever.
  • Remove lint from top tension disks.
  • Check motor brushes if it’s an older machine.
  • Check the machine’s timing or motor belt for tightness and look for areas that have excess wear.
  • Check bearings for signs of wear and tear.
  • Check shafts to make sure they’re securely in place.
  • Tighten loose gears.
  • Check the bobbin winder.
  • Check feed dog alignment and height.
  • Lubricate all moving parts of the machine.
  • Check the needle to make sure it’s centering.
  • Calibrate bobbin case tension.
  • Time the feed dog movement and machine needle.
  • Remove lint from the bobbin case.

FAQs

What’s the difference between a quilting machine and a sewing machine?

Sewing machines and quilting machines are very similar in design and functionality. In fact, you’ll find many machines that can do both sewing and quilting.
One of the primary differences between quilting and sewing machines is the amount of workspace on the machine. Quilting machines usually have a much larger work area, which makes it easier to work on bulky projects.
Quilting machines may also have faster sewing speeds and specialized presser feet that make it easier to complete more professional looking projects. They are the best at creating quilts of all sizes.

Do you need a walking foot to quilt?

Yes! If you want your project to go smoothly and look the best, you need a walking foot. Essentially, a walking foot adds another set of feed dogs to the top of your quilt. This may not sound like a big deal, but it is.
Quilt tops are full of seams, so that means that there’s a lot of bulk. Add batting into the equation, and you have even more bulk.
A walking foot will turn a regular sewing machine into a quilting machine. Without it, a standard presser foot would push against the top layer and towards you because of all the bulk. This will create a rumpled, bunched up quilt that will not look it’s best.

What does a walking foot do?

A walking foot acts as a second set of feed dogs, which makes it easier to work with multiple layers of bulky fabric. The walking foot works by scooting the top layer at the same pace as the bottom layer. Because both layers move at the same time, there’s no need to worry about misalignment. They are the best at keeping your fabric from bunching while you sew.
The feed dogs that are attached to the presser foot grip onto the top layer of the fabric, and move it under the needle at the same pace as the machine’s feed dog.

Can you put a walking foot on a sewing machine?

Yes. A sewing machine for quilting may come with a walking foot as part of its accessory pack. However, you can also purchase them separately for your machine (in most cases). You may have a hard time finding a walking foot that will fit an old sewing machine, but most of the best newer models will have one available as an accessory.

What is a quilting stitch on a sewing machine?

A quilting stitch is a special type of stitch designed for quilts. These include decorative stitches and free motion sewing. Some machines have several quilting stitches, while others have only a few.

What’s the difference between a quilt stitch and a baste stitch?

Baste stitching is the practice of making loose straight (or running) stitches on different fabric layers to hold them together. This is done in place of pinning layers together.
Basting stitches are also known as tacking stitches.
A quilt stitch is a basic running stitch that is used to create the final quilt.

What’s the difference between quilting and knotting?

In the quilting world, you may hear the terms “quilt it” and “knot it.” With quilting, you fasten the three layers of fabric together with lines of stitches.
With knotting, or tying, you go through the three layers, come back up to a nearby position, and tie the two ends together to create a square knot. The remaining threads are clipped to a uniform length.
Tying is quicker, but quilting is longer-lasting and more durable.

I hope this list of the best sewing machine for quilting machine reviews have been helpful.

Happy quilting!

10 Best Sewing Machines to Buy 2021

bernina

The Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab reviewed hundreds of machines to find the best styles for your home sewing projects, whether you love embroidery, quilting, making clothes and masks, or are a beginner sewer eager to learn. These heavy duty machines will help bring your sewing skills to the next level.

How to find the best sewing machine for you

When shopping for a sewing machine, the crucial question to ask yourself is: What is most important to me when I sew? Machines come with lots of different add-ons, accessories, and capabilities that may not be relevant to you and just add unnecessary cost, while other features you cannot sew without. Here are some specific features to look at before shopping:

  • Number and styles of stitches offered: For beginner sewers, you will need just two stitches: Straight and zig zag. More experienced sewers should look for a wider variety. For example, if you love embroidery or quilting, make sure you look for machines that provide those capabilities: If your machine doesn’t offer embroidery or free motion sewing, those features cannot be added later on. Additionally, make sure the machine has the capability to adjust stitch length, zig zag width, and tension so you have more control over your sewing.
  • Included accessories: Most machines include a bobbin and a presser foot, but some include much more. For the most bang for your buck, check if the machine includes a zipper foot, buttonhole foot, embroidery foot, removable extended work table, and an area for storage.
  • Extra features: Some machines include specific capabilities that can make sewing a whole lot easier like a thread cutter, automatic needle threader, lights, free arm, blind stitching, and buttonhole capabilities. Once you have them, sometimes you cannot imagine sewing on a machine without them.
  • Frame construction: For longevity of the machine, you want to look for a metal frame option. Plastic frames are common, but can deteriorate quicker and be more difficult to repair.

As with all sewing machines, make sure to read the included manual carefully before sewing, as every machine has slightly different use and care instructions. Then, sew away!

6 Best Sewing Machines Under $300

What to expect from a sewing machine under $300

Different sewing machines come with different features, accessories, and add-ons but there are a few must-haves that are common across all brands and models. Here are some of the things you should expect from any sewing machine under 300 bucks:

Speed

Most sewing machines under 300 dollars have quite an impressive stitching speed. Speed varies across various brands and models but usually ranges between 500 and 1100 stitches per minute.

Accessories

You should expect to see a few accessories like a storage compartment, bobbin, a presser foot, and an extendable work table among others. The accessories will enhance your sewing experience.

Sturdy build

Most of the sewing machines under 300 dollars are solidly built to give you a long-lasting performance. Most of them are made with either a metal or plastic frame.

Stitches

Many machines under the 300-dollar mark offer a variety of stitches and some are adjustable. Some even come with the stretch stitches which can be used on elastic fabric.

Type

There are 2 types, electric computerized and mechanical. They operate differently and they have varying features as well. Computerized sewing machines under the 300-dollar mark are a rare thing because they are generally costly compared to the mechanical ones.

Benefits of sewing machines under $300

Other than being affordable, other benefits come with owning a sewing machine under 300 dollars. They include:

Simplicity

Most of the machines under the 300-dollar mark are less complicated in their build; thus easy to set up and use. Some brands even focus on making them completely beginner-friendly with certain features.

First-rate features

At 300 dollars or less, you can get all the top-rated qualities found in high-end sewing machines that will give you professional results for a range of projects.

Cost-friendly

This is one obvious benefit of buying a sewing machine that costs less than 300 dollars. If you are a beginner or even an intermediate sewist, you wouldn’t have to dig deeper into your pockets to get one.

Features to consider when choosing a sewing machine under $300

Here are some of the crucial features that you have to be extra keen on for you to make the best buy:

Type

There are 2 types of sewing machines, they are mechanical and computerized sewing machines. If you are new to sewing you can go for a mechanical machine as they are more straightforward to use. Computerized machines offer so many options for an enhanced sewing experience.

Controls

This depends on whether the machine is mechanical or electrical. For a mechanical sewing machine, you will have to manually turn the dials to get the type of stitches you want. An electric machine on the other hand will make the adjustments for you. All you would have to do is press a button to tell it the stitch you want.

Max. sewing speed

This is measured in stitches per minute (SPM). Some machines like  the SINGER 4411 Heavy-Duty Sewing Machine sew at a top speed of 1100 SPM. Most machines have a speed ranging between 500 and over 1000 SPM.

Needles

Some models come with needles while others don’t. Be sure to use the right needles for each project so you can get the best quality stitches as well as avoid any damages like breakages. The wide the needle variety, the more versatile the machine is. The needles include; quilting needles, stretch needles, leather needles, and sharps needles among others.

Number and type of stitches

This determines the number of projects and types of fabrics you can work on. Ensure you go for a machine with multiple types of stitches including decorative, utility, and embroidery stitches. The SINGER 4423 Sewing Machine reviewed above is a good example of a machine with multiple stitches (23) that increase your freedom of creativity.

Stitch length and width

Being able to adjust the length and width of your stitches is a crucial thing to consider. Adjustable stitches allow you to work on various types of fabrics with multiple layers.

Buttonholes

Sewing machines come with either a 1-step buttonhole or a 4-step buttonhole. A 1-step buttonhole is automatic and it allows you to make a whole buttonhole with a single step.

Once you have mastered how to make buttonholes, you can use the feature for making decorations and crafts.

Feed

The feed dog is what gently grips the bottom piece of fabric to help it pass through the sewing machine for a controlled and continuous stitching. It helps with the production of accurate straight line stitches.

Load-in bobbin

There are 2 types of bobbins: a top loading and a front-loading bobbin. A top-loading bobbin is much easier to load as you don’t have to remove whatever you are doing to load it. Also, if the bobbin is made of clear plastic you can easily check on the amount of thread left.

Automatic needle threader

A machine with an automatic needle threader should be your first choice as it helps save time and efforts used to fix the thread on the needle. It also helps minimize eye-straining.

Presser feet

A presser foot will help you hold fabric down as it is passed through the machine and stitched. Be sure to go for a sewing machine with an all-purpose presser foot like the zigzag foot which you can use for most of the straight and zigzag stitching.

Size and weight

This is a matter of personal preference. If you are going to need to move the machine around a lot, then you better go for a compact and lightweight model. You don’t want a machine that will occupy so much space in your home.

LED

A built-in LED light comes in handy especially if your working space has insufficient natural lighting. It will light up your working space and ensure you finish all of your projects accurately.

How to take care of your sewing machine

Regular maintenance will keep your sewing machine in tip-top shape for ages. Here are some tips on how to care for your machine:

  • Ensure you change the needles regularly to avoid having dull needles that can cause sewing mishaps.
  • Oil the machine adequately to prevent the internal moving parts from jamming or rusting.
  • Be sure to cover your machine every time you’re not using it to prevent any dust from accumulating on it.
  • Tighten all the screws often as they tend to loosen with time.
  • Follow the cleaning instructions on the user manual keenly for easy and effective cleaning of the machine.
  • Take it for professional servicing at least once in a year.

Suspended electric fireplaces. Top best offers

Suspended electric fireplace is a device that fully simulates the burning of a flame and the release of heat. However, for such a design, a chimney is not required and it costs much less than a device with a real firebox. In addition, the installation of the structure is uncomplicated and may well be done by hand. Most often, such structures are wall-mounted, which makes it easier to choose a place for their installation. In appearance, they resemble a standard fireplace insert built into the wall. In this case, the effect of burning the flame is very realistic, and the heat is generated by the heating element. Our review is intended to tell you which pendant electric fireplace can become an effective heating element in the interior of your apartment directly.
