90,000 The Black Runner Who Ruined Hitler’s Home Olympics – Sports Legends – Blogs

This is the story of Jesse Owens – the great American athlete. He took four golds at the 36th Olympics in Berlin, in front of Adolf Hitler, and symbolically smashed the Nazi racial theory.

Jesse was born to the descendants of black slaves and suffered from racial discrimination in the United States for decades. Despite social barriers, Jesse revealed his athletic talent and went to the Games-36.

Hitler was unhappy with the arrival of blacks and Jews in Berlin, but still allowed them to speak. True, since the beginning of the Olympics, I attended only those award ceremonies where it was possible to congratulate athletes of the “necessary” race. Hitler was enraged by the victories of people “whose ancestors came out of the jungle.”

But Germany fell in love with Owens – in Berlin he felt much more comfortable than at home. Neither President Roosevelt nor his successor Truman invited Jesse to the White House – Owens lived almost in poverty, earning in humiliating ways (even competing with horses). The athlete’s merits were appreciated only in the 50s, and after his death, President Carter said: “No other athlete has so vividly symbolized the fight against tyranny, poverty and racial fanaticism.”

At the head of the richly served table sat a narrow-minded farmer, staring intently at the household. On his right hand was his blond wife.

He grimaced slightly when he saw the dark circles under his wife’s eyes, and then looked around with a heavy gaze at the children, who cautiously looked sideways in his direction, fearing to break the silence.

Sighing, the master raised his hands, palms up, and nodded briefly. Everyone joined hands, waiting for the head of the family to say a prayer. He traditionally took a minute pause to tune in to another conversation with the creator.

“Bless this meal for our body, Lord, and let us hold You in our hearts,” he said, bowing his head. – We pray in the name of Jesus, amen!

Tearing a leg off the turkey with a bang, the farmer greedily plunged his half-rotten teeth, yellow from tobacco, into the flesh of the bird. The others looked at him, not daring to begin their meal. Licking his greasy fingers, he leaned back in his chair and burst out laughing.

    – Why aren’t you stuffing your belly? I allow! But you must remember, thanks to whom you got the opportunity to eat deliciously. Thanks to our Lord!

The farmer took a jug of wine and filled the mug to the brim.

A black girl entered the room with a tray, still quite a child. Stepping noiselessly on the wooden floor, the black woman began to pour the lemonade. She was admitted to the table for the first time, and she was very nervous. Pouring lemonade to the hostess, the girl tried so hard to do everything right that her hand trembled, and several drops fell on the snow-white dress, hopelessly ruining it.

    – Sorry, Mrs! – babbled the maid and looked with horror at the farmer. He was just finishing his third glass of wine. Hatred flashed in the farmer’s eyes at what she had done.

    – How dare you, creature, to spoil an expensive dress! – the mistress, who now tried to take out on the servant all the evil accumulated due to bad relations with her husband, outpaced his anger.- Yes, so that you die!

She slapped her in the face, and the maid wept. Then the farmer, sighing heavily, got up from the table, took his fork and went up to the black woman, who closed her eyes in fear. He raised his hand and ran the fork over her eyelids, pressing lightly on her eyeballs. Dropping the sharp teeth on his cheek, he pressed them into the skin, feeling with pleasure how it gives in. Blood appeared on the cheek of the unfortunate woman.

    – Please don’t! Shrieked the maid, and the farmer felt his desire for the first time in years.

“Michael,” he muttered to his younger son in a hoarse voice. – Come here, son. Some people need to be taught a lesson in good manners. I’m sure the servant spilled lemonade on the hostess’s dress to get revenge on her. You’re jealous of her good life, black bitch, aren’t you?

The boy hobbled over to his father, looking with interest at the black woman who was shaking with primal fear. He knew that blacks are not people, and they should be treated like things, toys.Sometimes my father, getting very drunk, would grab a gun and run to shoot at the negroes in the cotton field. Often bullets pierced the bodies of emaciated workers, who brought the farmer such an income that he could swim in money, but, of course, it was not enough for him. Once he killed a negro who fell exhausted from a long work in the sun, after which he fed the body to the dogs. There were legends about his harsh disposition, all the servants were afraid of him. But at the same time, hatred was ripening in their hearts.

    – Michael, hit her! The farmer ordered, pouring himself more wine and looking at the maid with drunken eyes.- I want to see how you beat this stupid, how you beat the crap out of her.

    – John, that’s enough, he’s still a child! – the hostess was horrified. – Let him at least grow up, then he will play enough.

    – Okay, get out of here! The farmer dismissed, winking at Michael. – And you, parasite, will stay here, we have not yet settled our question …

Left alone with the black woman, John Starlight looked at her for a long time, his thick lips moving.

    – You negros are like locusts … Eating too much. And you work badly, you keep whining that you have no strength. You are just quitters. But some of my fellow farmers want you to be not just workers, but partners! Remember, bitch, this will never happen in Alabama. You will crawl under our feet like worms, eat leftovers, and work as long as necessary for America to prosper. You have to come up with something like this – to take you as a partner. So that blacks don’t wear rags, but expensive suits, live in mansions, drink expensive wine? I swear I will kill any white man who even hints at partnering with you.

He got up, walked over to the girl who was wiping the blood from her face, and suddenly grabbed her and held her tight to him. Then he tore off her clothes and raped her. Indifferently, throwing his limp body to the floor, he went to fetch the gun while the maid was bleeding. And when I returned, I saw several workers near the girl. They looked at him in silence, while one brought the girl to her senses.

    – Let’s get out of here, you scum! The farmer hissed, aiming his gun at the maid. – Or I will blow the head off to her and you!

The next moment he felt himself grabbed by the throat. It was the muscular arm of the father of the raped girl. The furious farmer immediately threw up his gun and shot at the maid, splitting her skull to the limit. The father, distraught with grief, loosened his grip, then the farmer hit him in the stomach with the butt, causing the negro to fly to the side.

    – Shall we arrange a race? Starlight laughed. – I give you a head start in five minutes, and then – who did not hide, I am not to blame.

The next second he fell into darkness, as the servant’s father smashed a jug of lemonade on his head.

“Brothers, you can’t endure this anymore, you need to pack your things and run to the north, where there are no such sadists,” the murderer muttered. – You run, and I will stay, all the same my life is over. Hope you can break out of this hell. And may the Lord keep you.

Among the African Americans who left Alabama, who did not want to put up with humiliation and bullying anymore, was Henry Cleveland Owens, the son of a slave, a worker on a cotton plantation in Oakville. He took his wife Mary Emma Fitzgerald with him, as well as ten children, the youngest of whom was James Cleveland Owens.

At the age of 8, the future four-time Olympic champion has already fully learned the hardships of hard labor on the plantation, picking up to 45 kg of cotton every day. At the same time, the boy was often ill, caught a cold easily, suffered from bronchitis and pneumonia, and in winter he spent a lot of time near the stove, wrapped in a blanket and coughing without stopping. His hands were often covered with boils, and then his mother would take a knife to open them on her own – there was still no money for medicines.

Together with the Owens family in the years following the First World War, one and a half million blacks fled to the northern states.Later, the Americans themselves would call this phenomenon the Great Migration.

Owens reached Cleveland, Ohio. But the northerners, accepting crowds of fleeing blacks, were not very happy with them. For example, in Oklahoma, where lynching became commonplace, the locals hated visiting blacks because they took their jobs. In the state’s second largest city, Tulsa, blacks were even banned from sharing neighborhoods with whites. There was also a powerful cell of the Ku Klux Klan. But African Americans were not discouraged. For example, many people began to call the Greenwood area the Negro Wall Street. Blacks have become “insolent” to the point that they have amassed a fortune here by opening their own businesses and services, including several grocery stores, two independent newspapers, two cinemas, nightclubs and many churches. The district has its own qualified Negro specialists – doctors, dentists, lawyers. Moreover, some of the blacks even owned their own oil wells. This, of course, they could not forgive. And then the “elevator incident” was invented (1921).

Fortunately for the Owens, the situation in Cleveland was better than in Oklahoma, but they did not find a paradise there either.

Shortly after the move, James Cleveland went to a local (and, of course, segregated) school.

    – Boy, what’s your name? – asked his teacher to add a new name to the list. Pulling his head into his shoulders, the school recruit timidly said:

    – JC, miss!

“So, you are Jesse,” the teacher wrote, not realizing that the boy had pronounced his initials – she was knocked out by a southern accent. And Owens did not correct the teacher, as he was very shy. From that moment on, the name stuck with him forever, and very soon the world recognized the great athlete Jesse Owens.

In the meantime, he was huddled in Cleveland. Alas, this place was not at all a salvation for a large Negro family who fled from Alabama. Segregation was also here, blacks were just as despised, considering them second-class people.

    – Sorry, son, but you have to work! – said Jesse’s father shortly after the move. The boy took on any job: delivering food, unloading wagons, hanging out in a shoe repair shop. And his father and older brother worked at a steel mill.

Every day Jesse saw the contempt for blacks, forbidding them to do a lot of things that are allowed to the owners of fair skin. She was a cherished pass to another world. Even the whites had their toilets, and the dirty buckets, in which there was such a stench that one could lose consciousness, were intended for colored people. But young Jesse did not know another life, he grew up in injustice from childhood, endured the arrogance of white masters and endless insults.

Sometimes in the parties of blacks who gossiped about the need to eliminate racial discrimination, the great boxer Jack Johnson was remembered. He, the first Negro world champion, was idolized, set as an example. Johnson pushed through the system by first winning the Black Only Division title and then forcing white America to punch their champion against him – the black man chopped him off like a chop.

    – Jack even fucked white chicks, what a brave and nice guy! – they talked about him, showing their thumb. But Jack Johnson was, of course, an exception to the rule, besides, his will was eventually broken anyway, being sent to jail – only 105 years later, the Giant from Galveston was acquitted by US President Donald Trump.

Jesse dreamed of one day becoming the same respected and revered black man as Johnson. He wanted to break out of the vicious circle, to prove that the representatives of his race were able to be with whites not only on equal terms, but also in some way to surpass them. And, oddly enough, a white man helped him in this – athletics coach Charles Riley.

But before the fateful meeting with the coach, Jesse fell hopelessly in love.

It was a girl with amazing, gentle eyes, and a smile seemed to illuminate her face, making her look like an angel. She was one of the prettiest in the school.

The first time he saw Minnie Ruth Solomon, Jesse immediately felt his heart pounding in his chest. He shook his head, but the image of the beauty did not leave him, and then Jesse wrote a note to the 13-year-old pretty girl.Afraid to approach the girl himself, he asked his sister to hand over a note.

Unfolding the crumpled piece of paper, Minnie read: “I want to walk you home.” She agreed, and since then Jesse happily walked by the arm with her, helping to carry the schoolbag with the textbooks. And at one of the ardent meetings, he suddenly grabbed her hand and, barely restraining a tremor in his voice, asked: “Will you marry me?”

Surprised, Minnie glanced at Jesse. They had a lot in common. She, too, had to flee north with her parents in search of a better life – from Locust Grove, Georgia.Difficult fate, the need to earn extra money, all this tied them together, made them a single whole. That is why Minnie didn’t think for a long time and happily answered: “Yes!”.

In those days, Negroes often sculpted families quickly, fearing that their lives were too short, especially without proper medical care and hard labor. There were also problems with quality contraceptives, perhaps that is why Jesse and Minnie became parents already in 1932, when the guy was 19, and the girl was 17. The couple in love had a daughter, Gloria.

And then Jesse firmly decided that it was time to break out into the people. His acquaintance with Charles Riley happened at the most opportune time.

A gray-haired man in a cap watched a black boy jerk over and over again as he worked on his starting technique. His athletic body admired Riley, but he did not want to prematurely hang gold medals around his neck, so he followed his workouts and made sure every time that his instinct was not deceiving.

Often, looking at the boy, he recalled his difficult fate. For many years he lived in Pennsylvania, worked as a miner, spending a lot of time in the cramped, hot air, where he ruined his health.

One day he was lucky to break out of a mine and get a job as a coach at Fairmount School, Cleveland. But the salary turned out to be symbolic, and a disabled child grew up in his family. And Riley had to earn money in the summer. He was worried about this, and, looking at Jesse, at how his white-skinned peers treated him, he understood how nervous the boy was. And he sympathized with him.

    – Hey guy come here! – once he said Jesse, and he, smiling from ear to ear, went to the coach. His attention was very pleasing to the boy. After patting the runner on the top of the head, Riley unexpectedly invited him to his place.

Since then, friendship has been struck up. Colleagues thought Riley was a weirdo who defiled his home by inviting a black man, but he didn’t care. He wanted to make a first-class runner out of a talented negro. And I felt that Jesse could do a lot.

“Come to the track every morning, before school, and after class you will calmly work in the shoe shop,” Riley suggested to the young athlete, and he happily agreed. After all, the coach went to an exception to the rule, training was always carried out on the track in the evening, after class – and Jesse’s parents would not have allowed her to quit her job.

    – Mr. Riley, do I really have a chance to break into people? – Jesse asked at one of the trainings, and the coach, smiling slightly, handed him a ticket to the races:

    – Let’s go together, I want to show you what real speed is!

This is how Jesse entered the racetrack for the first time. In horse races (as in life), not always the one who leads the finish line wins.Anyone who goes second or even last can add and leave an opponent out in the cold.

Jessie was greatly impressed by the trip to the racetrack, he was grateful to the coach for the fact that he did not limit himself to training, but also helped him learn the world, discover something new. Riley also told the most talented student how to become the best among the best:

    – You should not just run, because all your rivals do the same. Imagine that you are running along a track engulfed in fire, your feet are stepping on hot coals.I want to work on your technique. You should have quick, springy steps, while maintaining the correct, straight posture. Yes, I know your competitors run differently, but trust me, in the end it will give you a decisive advantage. And here’s another thing. When you are running, do not be distracted by anything, do not turn around to look where your opponents are. Don’t waste energy.

Jesse developed a respect for the sport even more after one emotional encounter. When he entered Riley’s office after another training session, he froze when he saw who was waiting for him there. He was a good-natured blonde with a slight smile, only on the track he was transformed into a super-fast runner. At the finish line, this athlete loved to dive forward, snatching victory, but usually he did not have to put in much effort.

“I think you know our two-time Olympic champion,” Jesse winked at his mentor. – Charles Paddock, tell our golden boy the story of your life, about the victories in Antwerp. I think it will be interesting for him to listen to you!

After talking with Paddock, Jesse realized that nothing is impossible. And he began to train even harder. He was multifunctional, he also mastered hurdles and long and high jumping. His first triumph came in 1933, when he set the world record for 100 yards (91 meters), running the distance in 9.4 seconds, and long jump – 7.56 meters. It happened at the National High School Championship in Chicago.

The best universities in the country began to fight for the privilege of inviting Jesse Owens to their place, because some already then said that this was the future Olympic champion. The battle for Jesse, nicknamed the Black Bullet, was won by Ohio State University. It was a big breakthrough for the black athlete, who was not only invited to a privileged university, where many whites would consider it an honor to study, but also offered a part-time job as a freight elevator operator (the passenger elevator was trusted only by whites). The opportunity to earn extra money has become a decisive argument.

    – Where will I settle? – Jesse asked the curator, being on the threshold of the university. – On the common campus?

The university guard, glancing at the newcomer, spat at his feet, and, turning to his friend, said with a contemptuous grin:

    – This nigger seem completely lost conscience.Thinks he has ascended to heaven because he runs fast. Achievement for me too! He will soon learn about our order. He can not live in a dorm with white – it now also be sent to East 11th Avenue, to the same swarthy upstarts. And he will train separately from everyone! Yes, he will not be served by any restaurant on High Street, he cannot even go to the movies, almost all cinemas are prohibited from selling tickets in color.

But Jesse stood the test at first, focusing entirely on training. In addition, he has a new coach, the venerable Larry Snyder.

    – If you think you’re perfect, you can turn around and leave, – Larry grunted, looking at the new student in action. “Believe me, I didn’t just put so much effort into making you come here. We’ll have to work. What kind of super champion are you with such a poor start? Watch the other guys in my group start. You and I will sit tightly on the starting line until you begin to live up to your nickname.Your long jumps are good, but don’t you think that if you start moving your legs and arms in the air, it will make your jump more dynamic?

Jesse liked to get new experience – in training he fulfilled all Larry’s requests. He really had to pay attention to the weak start. At that time, there were no supports for runners yet, and university students had to dig holes with a spatula so that they had support for a fast start. In rainy weather, these pits were unreliable, the foot could slip off them, but Jesse trained in any conditions, and gradually his starting spurt improved. In jumps, he also added, although he had to train in difficult conditions. The jumpers were not provided with a soft, comfortable landing surface and had to jump on the sand.

But all the difficulties were quite surmountable, and soon Jesse became convinced that Larry was a first-class specialist, and also a very good person. After all, it was this coach who agreed to work with blacks. Other mentors were not so kind – for example, blacks were not allowed to play on the university football team.Even taking a shower when white football players were in the booths was forbidden for African Americans. Fortunately, Snyder was free from prejudice, and he also saw that blacks had advantages (he admired the athleticism of blacks) that could make them the greatest. And Jesse quickly became one of the top runners of the university: the victories of the Black Bullet became commonplace, he was soon appointed captain of the university team, which in itself was a huge honor for an African American – this had not happened before in Ohio.

Each trip to the competition once again reminded Jesse of his skin color. African Americans were not allowed to ride on the university bus, it followed along with the rest of the blacks on its own. It was also forbidden for blacks to dine with white team members in a cafe on the way to the competition site. Sometimes whites rescued fellow students by taking food out of eateries. Once in Indiana, Jesse was brought food again, but as soon as he was about to take a bite, a man ran out of the cafe and began to scream hysterically at him, waving his arms.

    – Why the hell are you bringing our food to blacks? – He yelled, then began to snatch food from the hands of the dark-skinned. Jesse looked at this pitiful man with a feeling of the deepest disgust, and without eating a crumb, he came to the competition hungry, which did not prevent him from winning a convincing victory.

Despite his sporting success, Owens was not given a scholarship, and he paid all the bills himself. He continued to look for a part-time job, appearing at a gas station, then as a waiter in a cafe, while his grades at the university were so unconvincing that he constantly teetered on the brink of expulsion. It’s hard to keep a mark if you don’t have time for textbooks.

But Larry honed Jesse’s abilities so well that in 1935, in just 45 minutes, he broke three world records at once (another repeated) at the Big Ten Competition in Michigan. But just two weeks before, while playing with friends, he slipped and fell, injuring his tailbone. He complained that he could not bend down to reach his knees. I had to compete at the tournament in Michigan with back pain, but as soon as the first race began, the pain disappeared, only the focus on winning remained.

In the same year, Jesse finally found time for the wedding, marrying Minnie. They had to live separately while Jesse was educated – Minnie was sheltered by her parents, who helped the young mother raise the child while she worked in the beauty salon.

And a year later, Jesse achieved the greatest triumph of his life. But this might not have happened. The leader of Nazi Germany, Adolf Hitler, had already begun to rock the world with crazy ideas, and the Americans, ignoring the huge racial awl in their own ass, openly resented the Fuhrer’s policies.

“I doubt that Germany needs this Olympics,” Hitler said with a bored look every time Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels described to him all the advantages of a large-scale tournament. – We have a lot of other troubles, primary tasks that need to be done immediately. I have far-reaching plans, and sports will only slow us down. And a lot of money will have to be thrown away.

    – My Fuhrer, I urge you to reconsider your attitude. The Olympics will certainly show that our country is the greatest in the world, – assured Goebbels, because the Olympics were given to Germany during the times of the Weimar Republic, and it was too late to retreat.- Our athletes are ready to beat anyone, do not hesitate. They are talented and unshakable.

“Okay, okay,” Hitler replied. – If only the Jews are not allowed there. This is outrageous, dictate to our sports officials my big request – to exclude Jews from the participation in the Olympic Games. And ideally all unwanted ethnic groups. Do you understand me?

“I’m afraid this will cause confusion among our colleagues, in particular, among the States, because there are many Jews in their team,” Goebbels protested.

The society has already matured a protest against the Olympics in Germany – because of the internal policy of anti-Semitism. As the Minister of Propaganda had suggested, the countries participating in the Olympics expressed fervent protest against anti-Semitic sentiments. IOC delegates planned a secret meeting to move the Winter and Summer Olympics to another country, and when the Nazi regime got wind of this, they had to make concessions. The country began to actively remove anti-Semitic slogans, signs that were well known to Owens – “Jews are undesirable here.”True, behind the scenes, Jews were still not allowed to visit some public places. In the end, auditors were allowed into Germany, among whom was Pierre de Coubertin, and they all spoke with enthusiasm about the blessed changes in this country.

Goebbels chose a new tactic – to present both Olympics (in Berlin and Garmisch-Partenkirchen) as positive competitions, and the new Germany as a country in which there is no place for discrimination. To strengthen this image, Leni Riefenstahl, in particular, tried to shoot the megahit “Olympia”.She came up with a new, revolutionary shooting technique, using balloons, rafts and trenches for the best angles. Her editorial editing of the film added drama to the video, dynamism, which was not previously found in documentary filmmaking. The use of music and sound in filming has also become innovative. Leni showed Germany in all its glory, as well as the victories of foreign athletes, including African Americans.

And Goebbels still found ways to promote his ideas. Germany introduced a tradition that was followed by all other host countries of the Olympics. The whole world followed with interest the innovation of the Germans – how the Olympic flame follows from Athens to Berlin. Goebbels never tired of praising this notion, especially since it had a propaganda overtones.

    – The torch brought to Berlin from Olympia, Greece, shows that the Germans have Aryan roots, the propaganda minister said proudly.

In America, despite all the concessions of the Germans, there was a serious split – the society did not stop discussing anti-Semitic sentiments in Germany.Initially, Hitler did not want to see blacks at the Games. The Germans laughed at their American colleagues for betting on “black assistants”, and one German delegate even dropped the phrase that the Americans would allow “such inhumans like Owens” to compete at the Olympics. This was no longer discussed in America so violently, and yet the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in the United States tried to influence the position of the same Jesse Owens, the country’s strongest athlete, urging him to boycott the Olympics.

    – Show Hitler that his position is flawed! – the members of the association told Owens, while others assured that if he went to Berlin and won convincing victories there, it would hit the Fuehrer even more painfully.

Jesse decided to participate in the Games, and with him 18 African Americans. In the end, the entire US crew boarded the S.S. Manhattan to take a transatlantic flight. The country, which threw hysterics over German anti-Semitism, housed whites in first-class cabins without giving blacks the same privilege.

But Jesse could not even imagine with what pomp he would be greeted in Germany – the common German people had no hatred of blacks. There, for a while, he forgot about all the humiliations that he had to endure in his homeland. In Berlin, he was allowed to do everything, without any restrictions. Then he felt like a real star. He was truly admired, and on the first day Jesse signed so many autographs that his hand was tired. He was even more pleased with the absolute freedom. Do you want to dine in a restaurant with whites? You are welcome! Get on the bus in the front row seat? No problems! To go to the toilet without a sign: “For colored people only”? To your health!

Germany did not at all resemble an aggressor country, outwardly it was very hospitable.Preparing to meet the next enemies in Berlin, Jesse suddenly found that he even liked this country.

A few days before the start of the competition, the future founder of adidas, Adi Dassler, dropped in to see him. And he offered to try out the German spike, promising that the improved sneakers will rush Owens to the gold medals.

When the 36-year-old manufacturer made an offer to Jesse, about whose success in the United States he was well aware, his sneakers were not yet famous all over the world, and therefore any PR was valuable.Jesse was amazed; he heard rumors about how the German government treated blacks, so Dassler’s attempt to conclude an agreement with an African-American competitor of German athletes seemed too bold and even suspicious to him.

    – I hope they don’t fall apart right during the competition so that your guys get a chance? – Jesse chuckled nervously, but Dassler began to praise the products, assuring that the crosses are good and provide a comfortable run.

    – I am just a businessman and I want as many people as possible to wear my products, and even more so by sports stars, – assured Dassler.

Adi collaborated, of course, with the coach of the German national athletics team Jo Weitzer – moreover, they were good friends. One day, Dassler offered his sneakers to Weitzer, and the German athletes were delighted with them. The shoe had an anatomical shape, had good grip due to strong spikes, was elastic and was durable. In exchange for the miracle sneakers, Weizer promised Dassler that he would advertise his goods, not only to German athletes, but also to rivals. And yet, when Dassler asked the German coach to hand over the sneakers to Owens, Weizer was horrified: “I can’t do this, if the party finds out about it, they’ll give me hell!”

But Jesse did get three pairs of sneakers and after trying them, he refused any other shoes.

    – I will perform either in these sneakers, or without shoes at all! – he exclaimed, admiringly examining the present.

Dassler’s sneakers, which he created with his own hands, were made of glove leather, with reinforcements in the heel and toe, they had six long spikes. And they were fabulously good.

Jesse was once so poor that he had to run barefoot, but now he was offered to try out the shoes he could only dream of. And he tuned in even more to Olympic gold.

On the first day of the Olympics, Hitler was on the podium of the Berlin stadium.

In the host country, he was already made a god-man. Wearing a cap with the image of a soaring eagle, with a swastika on his clothes, the future symbol of millions of deaths around the world, as well as with his trademark mustache trimmed on the sides and shifty eyes, he behaved like a true fan.Hitler reacted emotionally to the performance of the athletes, sometimes jumped up, waving his arms, and could shake his head in annoyance. And he also attended the award ceremonies with visible pleasure, but he only congratulated the German triumphants, whom he looked into the eyes and shook hands tightly. He ignored the rest of the ceremonies. And when the gold medal was won by the African-American high jumper Cornelius Johnson, the Fuhrer hastily collected himself, deciding that he had had enough.

    – Mr. Hitler, you need to appear at all ceremonies, or not at all, – a little later the Fuehrer received such a message from the IOC delegates. Then Hitler decided that he would ignore all subsequent awards. This saved him from having to congratulate, including Jesse Owens.

A native of Alabama played on the second day of the Games in white Adi Dassler sneakers (he will win the next victories in black shoes).

    – Where is Jesse Owens? Where is Jesse Owens? – the crowd was agitated when the athletes entered the stadium, among whom was the favorite of the 100-meter. Among Jesse’s personal fans were young German women.

It was raining, but the stands were full.Hitler sat in the box, watching the black guy dart like an arrow through the most prestigious distance. The triumphant, who ran in a record 10.3 seconds, was awarded a long round of applause. The second was another African American, Ralph Metcalfe, Jesse’s college friend.

The Germans happily picked up the chant: “Yesseh Oh-vens!” Viewers were curious about how a person squeezes everything out of himself to become the best – the idea of a superman intrigued the Germans, and people like Owens attracted special attention.

No, Hitler did not rush out of the stadium in a rage, he calmly left the stands, since he was not supposed to officially congratulate Owens.

    – Hitler had a plan for what time he came to the stadium and when he left, Owens would later tell reporters. – It so happened that he left right before the awards ceremony. But before Hitler left the stadium, I passed by. He waved to me and I waved to him. I think it would be bad form to offend a person who has known triumph.

By the way, many years later, German sports journalist Siegfried Mieschner will tell that Owens allegedly showed him a photograph in which Hitler shakes hands with the winner after the 100-meter distance, just outside the stadium.

But the Reich Minister of Armaments and Ammunition Albert Speer told about Hitler’s true attitude to Owens:

    – Each victory of Germany at the Olympics, and there were a great many, made Hitler happy. But he was seriously annoyed by the series of triumphs of the wonderful colored runner from the USA, Jesse Owens. He said: “People whose ancestors came out of the jungle are primitive. They are physically stronger than civilized white people, so they need to be excluded from future Olympics. ”

Minnie came to Berlin with Jesse, and was very worried about him, set him up for victory as best she could. But the American was already inflated, hoping to achieve outstanding results.

She saw with her own eyes how the Germans were honoring her husband, running after him in the streets with a thirst for a photo or an autograph.Every second passer-by shook the athlete’s hand vigorously, the blond beauties looked at the black American with genuine interest, so that sometimes Minnie was even jealous, although few could argue with her natural beauty. It was unthinkable for her to imagine white women showing such attention to a black man in America. But it was Germany that became for Jesse a land of opportunity, not a homeland where he had to desperately fight for recognition.

Perhaps Minnie was a little scared, and she felt that in Germany, behind a beautiful facade, there was something different – an obsession. She must have seen people with swastikas marching in columns through the streets. The eyes of these Germans were full of insane fire, the desire to do something big. They dreamed of becoming involved in great events that were bound to happen in the foreseeable future. And it was clear that these electrified Germans would not be limited to one Olympics, they would want more.

Behind enthusiastic smiles, endless greetings and persistent stretching of notebooks, one could, of course, not see all this, but simply see a country that is on the rise, while its inhabitants are interested in progress, everything new, unknown. And also people who are capable of much. People like Jesse Owens. And he lived up to expectations, taking gold and on the second day of performances – in the long jump. He was helped to become an Olympic champion … a competitor from the German national team, a man who matched the image of an ideal Aryan. Tall, blue-eyed, blond jumper Lutz Long, holder of the European record, extended a helping hand to the African American when he was desperate.

Lutz Long, the pride of all Germany, was preparing to become an Olympic champion in front of Hitler. The reputation of the German athlete was impeccable, people shouted his name in ecstasy. Lutz’s father is a big boss. Mother – the granddaughter of the surgeon Karl Thirsch, the great-granddaughter of the chemist Justus von Liebig. Legal education, received at the University of Leipzig. And, of course, Lutz unconditionally trusted the regime, otherwise he would not have joined the National Socialist Union of German Students a year after the Olympics, and then the elite assault squad. He simply could not put the country to shame and was going to win Olympic gold.

And his main rival, Jesse Owens, had just run away qualifying in the 200m, setting an Olympic record. The African American did not see that the judges had already raised their flags, thereby demonstrating that the competition for jumpers had started. That’s why Jesse, right in his tracksuit, decided to try his hand, assuming that it would be just a workout. Having made a run too short, he screwed up the attempt. His surprise knew no bounds when he found that the judges had recorded this failed jump. Then he changed his clothes, jumped again, but now his excitement let down, again he was not counted as an attempt, and he had only one jump left. To qualify, Jesse only had to jump 7.15 meters. But the year before that, he showed an excellent result in Michigan (8.13) – a world record that no one could break for 25 years.

Lutz, watching the torment of a formidable opponent, suddenly decided to come up and support him.

    – Hi, my name is Lutz Long, – the German introduced himself.

    – Glad to see you, how are you? Jesse smiled nervously.

    – I’m good, but how are you? Apparently, something is eating you, ”Lutz shrugged. – Well, let me put my towel a foot (30.4 cm) from the jump line and you will push off from this place. I think then you will easily qualify.

This psychological trick worked – Jesse confidently took off this time and jumped even earlier, one and a half feet from the jump line, protecting himself from the spade. So, thanks to the German, Jesse stayed in the game.

(Some eyewitnesses claim that during qualifying, Lutz and Jesse did not speak to each other, refuting this story told by Owens alone).

And then the superduel of the world and European record holders began. The fifth attempt gave Lutz the feeling that the victory was very close – 7.87 m, he caught up with the previous achievement of Owens, which he set in his attempt. The German had never jumped so far, it was a new European record. The blue-eyed Aryan drew himself up to line and raised his hand in a fascist greeting. And he looked at the stands – they were jubilant.

Later, Lutz will describe his feelings as follows: “The Fuehrer clapped me enthusiastically. I stood right in front of him, filled with gratitude, and waved my hand to him myself. And I couldn’t believe my eyes – he got up and greeted me with a benevolent, fatherly smile. And I read in his eyes only one desire that I win! ”

Hitler was really excited. He glanced at Lutz through binoculars and waited for Owens to fail his last attempts. But he not only surpassed the German, jumping 7.94 meters in the fifth attempt. In the final, sixth attempt, Jesse put an end to this duel.

He took off as a greyhound, as if it were a 100-meter, then gracefully pushed off the white line and soared into the air, swinging his arms. Having landed on the sand, he quickly jumped up to hear from the organizers wonderful figures – 8. 06 meters.

Long, screwed up on his last try, was in a state of passion. Feet themselves carried him to the winner.“I couldn’t help it and ran to him to hug and congratulate,” Lutz recalled later.

    – You made me give my best, show everything that I am capable of! – answered Jesse, shocked by such friendliness. And together with the defeated German, he made a circle of honor around the stadium – an act that surprised everyone, and especially Hitler.

Before the war, Lutz Long worked as a lawyer in Hamburg, until he was in the tank army of General Field Marshal Erwin Rommel with the rank of re-freighter.Even in the war he wrote letters to Jesse, and the most touching was the last one that came from North Africa:

“I am there now, Jesse, where there is nothing but dry sand and sticky blood. I’m not afraid for myself, my friend. I am worried about the woman I left at home and about my baby Kai, who never knew his father. My heart prompts and I will be honest with you – this is the last letter I will ever write. If I’m right, I’ll ask you to do something for me. It is very important.I ask you to go to Germany when this war is over. Find Kai there and tell him about me. Tell him that there were times when we humans were not separated by a wall of war.

Let him find out how relationships can develop between men on this earth. And if you do what I ask, and this is the most important thing for me now, then I will do something for you. I’ll tell you what you think you would like to hear. And this, believe me, is true. The day in Berlin when I first spoke to you, I will remember forever. And especially the moment when you were on your knee and prayed. Then I did not know it, but I know now – we will never meet again. But in 1936 I approached you not simply because we were united by the Berlin Olympics. I believe that now you are reading this letter, although it should not reach you, because the goal has appeared again, and it is even higher than our friendship with you. I believe that everything will happen the way I want, because I believe – God will allow it to happen. That’s what I wanted to write to you, Jesse.I think now I believe in God. And I pray that the words that I write to you will reach the addressee. Your brother, Lutz. ”

Lutz’s fears came true – on July 10, 1943, during the invasion of Sicily by the Allied troops, the silver medalist of the Olympic Games in Berlin was mortally wounded. He died three days later in a British military hospital. He was buried in Sicily. And in the early 50s, Jesse acted as best man at the wedding of Kai, with whom he became friends. He told the guy in detail about his father, whom he never knew.

Some historians believe that Owens invented the whole story of friendship with Long, he allegedly even admitted it.And this story really looks like a fairy tale. But if she is true, then these words of Jesse do not look so pompous: “You can melt all my cups and medals into gold, but this will not be enough to outweigh the friendship that binds me to Lutz Long.”

Owens was going to score a golden hat-trick at the 200m.

First, Jesse dropped the glove Bob Packard, when at the start of qualifying he lost only a tenth of a second to the favorite. But then Packard was blown away by the addition of Mack Robinson, the older brother of legendary baseball player Jackie Robinson, the first African American to be allowed to play in the United States. In Berlin, Mack was also the first in some way when he surpassed Jesse in the semifinals (21.1 seconds), while the guy from Alabama was not so fast (21.3). Before that, Jesse had never lost to anyone on the Olympic track.

Jesse has absorbed all the best that Charles and Larry taught him. A jet start, then an aggressive run, as if there were hot coals under your feet. The body is straightened, hands are actively working. In the decisive race, the Black Bullet was unstoppable – 20.7 seconds, a new Olympic record. He ran so fast that it seemed like his feet were not touching the track.

Soon the coach of American track and field athletes announced the squad for the 4×100 relay. This was the first serious blow to Jesse, he was not in the quartet, although who, if not the best sprinter of the Olympics, should be given the opportunity to run for the team. Once again, the Americans showed contempt for the negro. Clenching his fists, he listened to Robinson’s excuses: “He’s got enough gold medals and olive wreaths already. We want other guys to feel the taste of victory as well. ” It was as if he was accused of being a black man winning for America. But Jesse could not help it, it was not up to him to decide. And he was getting ready to get used to the fact that he would remain a three-time Olympic champion.

But suddenly a scandal erupted in Berlin. At the last moment, Marty Glickman and Sam Stoller were unhooked from the quartet, and they were the only Jews in the entire American team. They were replaced by African Americans Owens and Metcalfe. Many years later, Glickman will tell you that the decision was made by the head of the US delegation, Avery Brandedge, so as not to humiliate Hitler.Glikman will also insist that such a decision was also made on the basis of anti-Semitism, which was not alien to Brandage, although Stoller did not support his point of view.

Officially, it will be announced that the replacement is due to the fact that the American team should play in the strongest composition.

    – Always, under any circumstances, I understood that I was a Jew! – Glikman will say in the hearts of many years later, because the resentment will never leave his heart. – They never tired of reminding me of this. But at school competitions, then in college and, finally, in the Olympic team, I tried to show that a Jew can achieve great success. Because it doesn’t matter what race you are, what religion or skin color you are! There, in Berlin, it was hard for me. Even the Olympic stadium pressed on me with its immense dimensions. Especially when this gigantic bowl was overflowing, filled with a huge mass of people. 110,000 people, as soon as Hitler appeared at the stadium, jumped up from their seats as if scalded, and began to shout in unison: “Sieg Heil, Sieg Heil!”Together! And a powerful echo rolled through the stadium. Sometimes it seemed to me that all the people who came to the arena were in uniform. And the swastika dominated everywhere. Yes, it was 1936, and the swastika was still not disgusting, and yet it was creepy. I felt that anti-Semitism reigned in Germany, even though they were hiding it.

The American team set a world record in Berlin by running the relay in 39.8 seconds – this figure lasted 20 years.

Owens became a four-time Olympic champion and the coolest athlete at the Olympics. He returned home dizzy with German hospitality. And he had already forgotten what racial discrimination was, but at home he was very quickly reminded of who he was.

Owens was invited to a reception in New York in his honor. The ceremonial event was supposed to take place in the building of the Waldorf-Astoria skyscraper. In a smart suit, he came to the building and was surprised to find that blacks were only allowed to use the freight elevator.

    – Home, sweet home, – the holder of four gold medals hissed through clenched teeth and with a spoiled mood went to the banquet.Several months passed, and everyone forgot about his triumph. Jesse again became an ordinary black man, for whom a number of restrictions were in effect. The country that condemned Germany for anti-Semism was no better.

Jesse was never able to graduate from Ohio University, and his sports career came to an end when he was stripped of his amateur status for participating in commercial competitions. Then the Alabama native went to Hollywood to seek his fortune, remembering the success of Johnny Weissmuller, a five-time Olympic champion, who at the end of his sports career signed a seven-year contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and became famous as Tarzan. But at the interview, Jesse was hinted that he is, first of all, a Negro.

US President Roosevelt also did not care that the Negro became the most famous athlete of the Olympics. He had other concerns – elections. On them, he had to create the right image for himself. He needed the support of Democrats, including those from the southern states, where whites were in the Democratic Party. They were all highly racist. Most likely, for this reason, Roosevelt generally ignored the sporting successes of the Republican Owens.

    – No, Hitler did not insult me in Berlin, it was Roosevelt who insulted me without even sending a congratulatory telegram! – offended Jesse.

He was never invited to the White House by either Roosevelt or his successor Harry Truman. Only in 1955 did Dwight Eisenhower appreciate his achievements, calling him the ambassador of sports. And in 1976, Gerald Ford presented Jesse with the Medal of Freedom, one of the country’s most honorable awards.

But this happened much later, and before the war Jesse eked out a miserable existence. He and Minnie already had three daughters, but what they didn’t have was money. And then he took desperate measures.

A handful of spectators gathered in the stands, looking with interest at the thoroughbred horses. A special performance awaited them today.

A fat man in a cap took a hundred dollar bill from a greasy wallet and handed it to the bookmaker, filtering through his teeth:

    – Perhaps, my wife will not beat me – I feel, today I will definitely break the bank! I know this nigga, he shit shit.

“No, I believe in Jesse,” a boy in a plaid jacket and a red cap frowned. – He’s a great athlete who has collected a bunch of awards in Berlin.

    – What else is Berlin? – the fat man goggled his eyes. – I don’t remember such a state.

“You’d better keep quiet,” the bookmaker sighed, accepting the bill from the boy, the grocer’s son. – Berlin is a city in Germany. Germany is not a state either, it is such a country in Europe. Got it?

    – What are you doing here, I don’t care where he won what. Now this mattress works at a gas station. And here they brought venerable horses that won at prestigious competitions.

Suddenly the door opened, and a negro with tired eyes appeared in front of the motley audience. He forcedly smiled at the audience and went to the track, where two racehorses had already been displayed.

Jesse was in cahoots with the show’s organizers. He knew that horses would get lost at the sound of a shot at the start of the sprint and give him a head start.

    – Hey mister, why are you humiliating yourself? – could not resist the little boy, leaning over the wooden railing.- I know you are a very famous athlete.

And Jesse said in response what he had said more than once:

    – Yes, many people tell me that it is humiliating for an Olympic champion to compete with horses, but what should I do? I have family. Sports gave me four gold medals, but I can’t eat them.

He won that race. Even in a funny show, he could not afford the shame. And he ran as if there was a red-hot coal under his feet. But the Olympic champion ran not only with horses, but also with dogs, and even with a kangaroo.Every dollar counts. He worked not only at a gas station, but also was a janitor on a playground, a dry cleaning manager.

Only in the post-war years his life began to improve. He became a motivational speaker, he was invited to speak to big businessmen who lost their grip and were looking for someone who could charge them with new emotions. Jesse was perfect for this role, stories from his life helped many to regain confidence. He was contracted by the Ford Motor Company, and the US Olympic Committee became interested in his services.Jesse began to travel a lot around the country, finally becoming in demand. He even managed to open a public relations firm.

Life got better, he began to earn up to 100,000 dollars a year only through public speaking. Jesse became a regular at banquets for the moneybags, an eternally smiling, sincere evangelical chatterbox, whose mere presence raises the mood. And of course, with the money he earned, Jesse bought himself thoroughbred horses.

But Owens could not help but see that racism remained as it was in America. And once he gave up the slack, so much so that he was nicknamed Uncle Tom, because he did not stand up for his own.

At the 1968 Olympics, a lot of blacks played for the American team, who were sick of racism in the United States. Most indignant was Tommy Smith, an excellent athlete who, with a height of 191 cm, had very long legs. And if he picked up speed, then he already kept it, thanks to remarkable endurance and a powerful chest, which quickly pumped blood throughout his body. Smith liked to morally suppress his rivals, starting his races slowly, and at the end of the distance adding.

    – How much can you endure! – Smith was indignant, preparing for a riot at the Olympics. – In our team, the coaches have almost no black assistants. What is this? Have you seen how the world title was taken away from Mohammed Ali? This is a robbery! We negros live in terrible conditions, our children are not taken to the best colleges. If I win, then I’m American, and if I do something bad, then of course I’m a nigga. But yes, I am black and I am proud of it. And black America will understand what we do.

Smith’s race resulted in a beautiful duel with another African American John Carlos. The latter burst forward, but Smith connected the reserve forces and rushed past in a whirlwind. This was a blow to Carlos, who also missed Australian Peter Normann. But the most interesting thing began at the awards ceremony, which all the prize-winners, including the Australian (he had his own reasons), turned into a political action.

The Triumphants appeared on the podium with the Olympic Project for Human Rights badges. They were barefoot, wearing black socks that symbolized the poverty of blacks. Smith’s neck was wrapped in a black scarf, this was already a demonstration of black pride.Carlos unbuttoned the top of his tracksuit to show solidarity with all collar workers in the United States. He was wearing a beaded necklace. According to Carlos’s plan, it was dedicated to all those people who were lynched or killed, and later no one even prayed for their souls.

When the United States anthem sounded, Smith and Carlos turned to the flag and raised their black-gloved fists. Only Carlos forgot his gloves in the Olympic village, and on the advice of Norman raised his left hand in Smith’s glove. The upturned black fists are a well-known symbol of the struggle of African Americans against racism, but this act was greeted at the Olympic stadium with loud whistles and hooting. Smith and Carlos were disqualified, asked to leave the Olympic Village immediately, they were also kicked out of the American team, and since then they have never played for the United States.

But the rebels had followers. The winner of the gold medal in the 100-meter race, Charles Green, tore off the American emblem from his shirt, and the prize-winners in the 400 meter race appeared at the awards ceremony in black berets, fists raised in black gloves.

Returning to their homeland, Smith and Carlos were obstructed. They tried to beat the Olympic troublemakers, unknown persons threatened to kill them, as well as people close to them. Time magazine wrote the following lines about their act: “Faster, higher, stronger!” – the motto of the Olympic Games. “Angrier, nastier, uglier!” “This is the best description of what happened in Mexico City.”

Jesse Owens was heavy and his support could help Smith and Carlos. But the four-time Olympic champion, who suffered most of his life from racial discrimination, not only did not help them, but also attacked the guys with criticism.

“The black fist is a symbol that doesn’t mean anything in itself,” he said. – When you open your fist, there is nothing left but your fingers. Weak, limited fingers. There is only one option in which the black fist becomes significant, and that is when money is clamped in it. This is where the source of true strength lies.

True, four years later he reconsidered his attitude to the audacious act of his compatriots.

“Now I realized that belligerence, in the best sense of the word, was the only correct answer,” he wrote in his autobiography.- Any black person who was not belligerent in those years was either blind or a coward.

It sounded like repentance, admission of mistakes. And deserved respect. And shortly before his death, Jesse still tried to influence at least something. He asked President Jimmy Carter not to boycott the Olympic Games in Moscow. The Americans did not want to let athletes into the Soviet Union, protesting against the introduction of troops into Afghanistan.

“Olympic ideals are out of politics, this grand competition should be seen as a time-out for war, and I hope you will take that into account,” Jesse said, but Carter didn’t listen to him.

A few months later, Jesse Owens, a heavy smoker, died of lung cancer. The Olympic champion started smoking when he was 32 and probably not out of a good life. He smoked no less than a pack of cigarettes a day, because his whole life was a struggle – with rivals, poverty, racism. Not every body can handle this, and cigarettes were a way to deal with stress.

Jesse died on March 31, 1980, when he was 66 years old, in Tucson, Arizona. Minnie, his wife, and other loving relatives were with him until the last.At the funeral, it was decided to wrap his body with the Olympic flag, a white linen with five multi-colored rings.

And although Jimmy Carter did not agree with Jesse Owens’s position on the 1980 Olympics, after the death of the four-time Olympic champion, the US President said: “Probably no other athlete has so vividly symbolized the struggle of man against tyranny, poverty and racial fanaticism.

    90,000 Runner without obstacles – Newspaper Kommersant No. 150 (4205) from 18.08.2009

    World Athletics Championships

The event, which is likely to remain the brightest at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin, took place on the second day of the championship. We are talking about Sunday’s final in the 100m race and the world record of the phenomenal Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, who showed 9.58 seconds. He dropped more than a tenth of a second from his previous achievement. Kommersant correspondent VALERY MIRONOVA gives details from Berlin.

Poor heptathlon athletes who, late Sunday evening, made a crowd of honor around the stadium led by the English champion Jessica Ennis, they probably suspected that the howling, screeching and other sounds that were at that moment carried from the 75,000-seat stands of the Olympic stadium were unlikely to him some kind of attitude. From minute to minute they were waiting for the most topical action of the championship – the final of the men’s 100-meter.And all eight of its participants were already warming up at the start. The audience was not up to the heptathlon.

From the beginning of the current athletics season until yesterday, a single question was discussed for this sport: which of the two outstanding sprinters – Usain Bolt or the American Tyson Gay – will win in Berlin and will a new world record take place here? Both were ready for battle. Gay had the best result of the season – 9.77 seconds. Bolt, three-time winner of the Beijing Olympics, lagged behind in this indicator, but did that mean anything?

About six months ago, his trainer Glen Mills spoke about the fundamental changes that he intended to bring to work with the student. And most importantly, he promised fast results, already at the 2009 World Championships. “Usain and I racked our brains for a long time before we came up with three options at once to correct his still clearly lame technique of leaving the start,” Mills said then. And with iron notes in his voice, he guaranteed that if everything goes according to the new plan, then no one else will be able to get ahead of his student at the start. “I don’t know how fast he will run in Berlin, but certainly faster than the Games in Beijing,” added Mills.

In Beijing, Bolt ran 100 meters in 9.69 seconds – a result that seemed fantastic and impossible. But three weeks before the World Cup, Mills announced that Usain Bolt was capable of running the most prestigious distance in 9.54 seconds. I wonder if anyone then, even being aware of the extraordinary talent of Bolt, believed him?

It was a great ending. In front of him with all his trademark antics, the famous gesture depicting an archer shooting an arrow into the distance, Bolt warned: “Guys, don’t joke with me!” Tyson Gay with another sprinter from Jamaica Asafa Powell – also famous artists – did not lag behind in this aspect. But only in this. The fact that the work on the errors in the technique bore fruit became obvious from the very first moment. The bolt really left the start perfectly this time, without losing it to any of the competitors. And immediately, and not in the middle of the distance, as it happened with him before, he led the race, which ended in a plague 9.58 seconds. The organizers instantly analyzed and published the layout of his run. Bolt covered the first 30 meters in 3.79 seconds, the next 30 meters in 2. 52 seconds, and the final two 20 meters in 1.61 and 1.66 seconds each. That is, he actually flew them!

But the funny thing is that exactly as it was in Beijing, Usain Bolt, almost reaching the finish line, again began to mow to the side. When he first shook his head to the right, this was justified by the fact that his closest neighbors were Gay, who ran second on the fifth track with a US record (9.71), and on the sixth, Powell, who became third (9.84). But why he then glanced to the left, where danger could not arise even theoretically, is incomprehensible. Here’s another reserve!

Of course, when, in his many hours of interviews after the end of the competition, Usain Bolt said that two successful seasons (he won only two silver medals at his first world championship in 2007 in Osaka) are clearly not enough to go down in the history of world sports and to be called his legend, he was cunning. He was cunning, and when he said that he did not think about records at all. It is quite obvious that Bolt, who arrived in Berlin in excellent shape, in the coming days, or rather from Thursday, will begin to do something similar and at a distance twice as long. He started with it and for a long time it was the 200-meter race, where his main rival would again be the still reigning world champion Tyson Gay, considered his crown distance.

As for the question whether it is possible to run a 100-meter run even faster, then, apparently, none of the living sprinters, except for Bolt himself, will be able to answer it.

Lacey jogging in the morning, looking at the screen of her smartphone. She greets affably with the company of other runners. After exercising, Lacey returns home. She scans social media profiles of people who are rated five stars. Lacey herself has an average rating of 4.2. Lacy works out a smile in front of the bathroom mirror. Then she turns to her brother Ryan, who is playing a computer game on the net.Lacey says their home is ending in four weeks. Buyers are coming from the owner this afternoon to inspect the property. Ryan claims that he has somewhere to move from here. Their neighbor has found a job in Phoenix, Ryan will be able to leave with him. Lacey says she will start looking for options too.

In the office building, Lacey takes the elevator with Bethany (rating 4.6). She says she got a job at a prestigious company on the top floor.

Lacy discovers that Nancy has rated the coffee shot a four. She and Lacey were childhood friends. But now Nancy has become very popular, her rating is 4.8. Chester (3.1 rating) walks up to Lacey and treats her to a smoothie. She gives him a good grade. One of his colleagues tells Lacey that no one is in touch with Chester now, they parted ways with Gordon, everyone took his side.Chester is trying to regain his popularity, so he curses up in front of everyone. But if his rating drops to 2.5, he will be fired.

However, they are all of the middle and lower levels. Therefore, in order to achieve a higher rating in a short time, Lacey needs a breakthrough.Ideally, good grades from people of the highest category with a rating of more than four.

Chester is not allowed into the office by security guards, his rating has dropped to 2.4. Lacy in the elevator treats Bethany to a croissant, she refuses. Lacey gets three stars from her. Hansen advises Lacey not to be too zealous, as this will cause people of the highest category to cease to respect her. Be yourself. Lacy takes a photo of an old stuffed toy named Rag, which she keeps as a mascot on her desk. For this shot, she receives five stars from Nancy.

Lacey tries to imitate the lifestyle of the people of Nancy’s circle, prepares tapenade at home, pours a glass of white wine. Nancy calls her. She says that Ragpichka’s photo touched her very much. Then she shows a gorgeous ring on her finger, says that Paul proposed to her. Nancy says there are hundreds of people invited to the wedding, all levels 4.7 and up, sends Lacey the list.Lacey says she won’t let her childhood friend down. Ryan, who heard this conversation, is sneering, recalls how many nasty things Nancy did to Lacey in her time. But she protects her ex-girlfriend.

Lacy tells Cal that she agrees to take the apartment and is ready to post a bond.

Lacey rehearses a speech at the wedding in front of a slideshow of her shared childhood photos with Nancy. A little five-year-old girl at an arts camp saw that I was scared and began to communicate with me. Nancy helped me sew the Rag, and I still keep it … Lacey asks Ryan if a tear is not too much? Ryan says that the speech is so sugar that he will have diabetes. He also reproaches his sister for being fixated on ratings from people of the highest category. Because of these stupid ratings, you started comparing yourself to those who just pretend to be happy. Lacey has a fight with her brother. I didn’t bring the guys here, I didn’t want anyone to know that I live in a shack with a C grade.

Lacey jumps out of the house, a taxi is waiting for her. She collides with a woman passing by, she spills coffee from a glass on herself. Lacey gets a low grade from her. On the way to the airport, Lacey talks to Nancy, promises to be in time for dinner rehearsal. The chatter of two ladies annoys the taxi driver. His score further lowers Lacey’s rating.

At the check-in desk, Hannah airport employee informs Lacey that her flight has been canceled due to a customer incident. Lacey says she urgently needs to fly to the wedding where she will be the bridesmaid. Hannah says there is one seat on another flight, but Lacey will not be able to get one because her rating is less than 4.2. Lacy scandals, swears. Hannah calls security. The guard says that Lacy will be temporarily degraded as punishment. In a day, the rating will be restored, but during this time all negative ratings will double, so she should refrain from negative. The guard demands that Lacey leave the airport immediately.

Lacey decides to rent a car. Due to the low rating, she is given a car of an outdated model. On the way, Lacy calls up Nancy, says that by morning she will reach Port Mary.

At night Lacy stops at the charging station, but the charger she is equipped with does not fit the old car, and no one has an adapter. The station worker, who was prevented from watching porn by Lacey, gives her a deuce. Her rating drops to 2.8. Because of this, Lacy can’t even get a ride. She walks along the highway. A garbage truck stops next to her. The middle-aged driver (Susan) offers her a ride. Susan’s rating is 1.4, which scares Lacey, but she has to agree. Susan asks what happened to Lacey: you don’t pull 2.8 points at all. She justifies herself: it is temporary, he was demoted for a scandal at the airport. But I will go to the wedding, give a speech, and everyone will forget about it.There are four and above guests, my punishment will be removed from me, my GPA will rise, and everything will be fine.

Susan says: I was once 4.6. I lived for this, tried very hard. But eight years ago, my husband Tom fell ill with pancreatic cancer, and the symptoms appeared late. I gave five stars to all doctors, nurses and consultants. And the cancer did not care, it grew and grew for itself. After a couple of months, we learned about an experimental treatment, very expensive and exclusive. I did everything to get Tom a place. He had a rating of 4.3, and the place was given to the person with 4.4. When my husband died, I sent everyone to hell, began to say what I want and when I want. People rarely like this. It’s amazing how quickly your social status falls. It turned out that most of my friends didn’t really need it. They treated me as if I pooped them in porridge. But how good it was! I tore these bastards to shreds. It was as if I had taken off my tight shoes. Maybe you should try that too? Lacey is not ready to do this. You had a life, there was something good about it.You have lost it. I’m sorry. But now you have nothing to lose. And yet I have nothing, I am struggling to get something. You have to race, that’s how this shitty world works.

In the morning, Susan wakes Lacy up. I’m going east, you need to change somewhere. Port Mary is thirty miles away, and many buses stop here. And I put something in your suitcase. It’s like a life jacket.

Lacey walks into the toilet at a gas station. She repeats her speech. Two cosplayers enter. They discuss their favorite TV show, talk about going to a party in Port Mary. Lacey is lying that she is also a fan of this series. She claims that a friend with a suit is waiting for her on the spot, and her car has stalled. The cosplayers say there is free space in their trailer and invite Lacey to come with them.

Lacey calls Nancy. Do not come! I don’t know what’s going on with you, but at my wedding I will not tolerate 2.6. All guests are above four, they will be shocked by you. Lacy is desperate: but you said you needed an old friend! Nancy: You were 4.2 then.Sincere communication with the four at an event of this level gave me an excellent prediction of increasing prestige on all tests. But now you are less than three, this is somehow too disgusting. Go home. Lacy breaks into a scream: I will read the speech anyway, and they will vote for me a wild rating! Nancy hangs up. Lacey tells cosplayers: I haven’t seen your stupid show. She is dropped from the trailer.

Lacey drinks coffee and whiskey from a thermos that Susan put in her suitcase. She tries to catch a ride, but not a single car stops.

Under the bridge, Lacey steals an ATV from some guy.

    Nancy and Paul’s wedding begins.

Lacey drives up to the estate for the ceremony. Only those with a score higher than 3.8 are allowed to enter the protected area. Lacy rides the bypass road through the woods. She falls into a swamp.

There is a banquet at the wedding. The groom raises a toast to his best friend, confesses his love to his chosen one. Dirty and drunk Lacy comes to the chic celebration. She starts making a speech.Everyone present is shocked. Nancy hisses in Paul’s ear: take her away now, she’s already 1.1. Lacy meanwhile swears, tells the truth about their relationship with Nancy, grabs a knife prepared for a wedding cake, threatens to cut off Rag’s head. The guards grab her and drag her along the ground. Lacy continues to scream that she wishes her childhood friend happiness.

Lacy in the police station cell. She pulls off her dirty bridesmaid dress. From the cell opposite, another detainee, a young black man in a suit and tie, is looking at her. They begin to swear, being sophisticated in wit and choice swearing, and both get great pleasure from this.

Early in the morning, Cooper packs up his backpack, leaves his parents’ house, gets into a taxi. On the way to the airport, his mother calls him, Cooper drops the call.

Cooper travels the world. He visits Australia, Thailand, India, UAE, Spain, Italy, France.

Cooper arrives in London. He visits the main sights of the British capital.

Cooper is sitting in a cafe. At the next table, he sees a couple kissing. Cooper in a mobile dating app finds a girl named Sonya.

Cooper and Sonya in the pub. The girl says that she works as a technical correspondent. She writes for a website about the techno industry. Do you travel around the world like Indiana Jones? Cooper talks about his adventures, says that Britain is his last stop, he will return home in a week.

In the morning, Cooper and Sonya wake up in the same bed.The girl pays attention to the mark on the guy’s shoulder: another battle scar? Hunting sharks? Well no. Thanks for that to Josh Peters, a bastard at school. We quarreled with him at a labor lesson, he cracked me with a metal bar. Cooper’s phone rings. Call from the subscriber “Mamulya”. Cooper doesn’t answer.

Sonya offers breakfast. Cooper examines the discs on the shelf: you have so many games, you are a straight gamer. I need it for work. What’s this, your dating guide? No, this is The Singularity, a book about how computers got smarter than men, what women did before them.Mommy calls Cooper again. He doesn’t pick up the phone: it’s like a well with shit, where I don’t want to open the hatch right now. Sonya advises to talk to her mother: she is worried. Cooper explains: I still live with her. I was caring for my dad, he had an early Alzheimer’s, he died a year ago. Dad used to be my best friend, and then he even stopped recognizing me. We don’t have such a close relationship with Mom. I don’t even know how to communicate with her. That’s why I left home. I need to talk to her, but not on the phone.I’ll deal with this when I get home. Sonya kisses Cooper on the forehead: you’re a good guy, call your mom.

Cooper tries to withdraw money from the card through an ATM, but there is not enough money. Cooper calls the bank, finds out that his account was hacked and is now blocked. It will take several days to restore access. Cooper can’t buy a plane ticket.

Cooper visits Sonya. The girl jokes: this is the most impudent excuse for the second hookup. She lets Cooper into her apartment. He says he knows how to earn extra money. This is the application he has already used. In the app, thrill-seekers are offered a playtest with Saito Gemu. Sonya says that these are very serious guys, they are developing horror games. The head of the company is Sho Saito, he is a real genius, but very secretive. Apparently, the company is working on a new progressive project, but there is no information about this. Cooper promises Sonya that he will make exclusive contact with Sho for her if he does everything right.Sonya asks to take a picture of something better during the playtest. Then you will get much more than a couple thousand.

Cooper arrives at the country estate where the company is headquartered. In the large mansion, he is met by Saito’s assistant, Katie. She asks to give her the phone and everything that can be used for reception and transmission. Cooper says it’s paranoia, but obeys. Katie brings the guy to an isolated room, gives a nondisclosure agreement. The document also indicates that a micromedical procedure will be carried out.It doesn’t hurt more than getting your ears pierced. Cooper says the deal is missing a page to sign. Katie is away for a while. Cooper picks up his phone from the table, turns it on, takes pictures of the contents of the suitcase that Katie brought with her, sends them to Sonya: there are some medical gadgets. Katie returns. She says we are working on an interactive augmented reality system. Katie displays a device that looks like a tiny fungus. She fixes Cooper’s head with an electronic hoop, shoots the fungus in the back of the head with a medical pistol, and then launches the software on the computer.Cooper’s phone rings. Katie wonders: I kind of turned it off. The launch of the tested game is complete. Katie lays out four targets on the table. Cooper sees them turn into holes. A digital image of a gopher appears from one hole. It is gradually becoming more detailed. Cooper is amazed at the reality of the funny animal. Katie claims that this is just a mental projection, only Cooper sees the gopher. Katie offers to “slap” the animal. Cooper is reminded of the game “Shmyakni Mole”. He begins to recklessly beat the gopher with his palm, which protrudes from different holes, until the animal throws out a white flag.Cooper is delighted with the toy. Katie claims this was only a limited test demo. You should take part in a full beta test, we will pay much more for it. Cooper agrees.

Katie introduces Cooper to Sho Saito. He says he is currently developing the most personal horror game in history. Katie claims that this app is a work of art level. It monitors the player’s brain activity, adapts quickly, and tries to figure out how best to scare him. Cooper is ready to pass the playtest.Katie downloads a neural network package.

Katie brings Cooper to the mansion located on the estate a couple of kilometers from the company’s headquarters. What is the essence of the game, what should I do? Nothing, just be in the house and we’ll see how long you hold out before you finally get cold feet. I’ll follow you from the control room. Katie gives Cooper an earpiece to keep in touch. None of the things seen here will physically harm you, they are just audiovisual effects. But if it gets too scary, we will stop the experiment at any time. Come up with a stop word. “Enough.” Okay, enjoy it. Katie leaves Cooper alone.

Without a telephone, Internet and TV, Cooper gets bored, he starts leafing through the book. Soon he sees a spider crawling towards him. The system recognized his arachnophobia. Cooper tries to trample the spider, after which he discovers that there are no marks left on the sole.

Cooper hears a noise. Then a male figure suddenly appears next to him.Cooper is startled by surprise, then examines the face of the “ghost”, he looks like Josh Peters. Cooper wants to touch him, his hand goes right through, blurring the image.

Peter pours himself some non-alcoholic wine, finds gingerbread cookies in the kitchen cupboard. He is attacked by a giant arachnid monster with the face of Peters. Communication with Katie is lost.

There is a knock on the door. Cooper thinks the company’s employees came to fix the earpiece. But this is Sonya. Cooper initially doubts her reality. He touches the girl, she is made of real flesh. Sonya says that Cooper is in danger and must leave immediately. A year ago, Saito tried to patent a computer brain interface, but the idea was deemed insane and dangerous. Last year, five people went missing, all tourists who used the app for a part-time job. Cooper does not believe Sonya, he believes that she was brought here on purpose to scare him. Sonya claims that it was she who hacked the bank card while Cooper was asleep, and attracted his attention to this work.Sonya takes the knife and approaches Cooper: you should have called Mommy, not me, it was I who lured you here. Cooper screams in horror: Take the knife away, I didn’t sign up for that. A spider-like monster pounces on him. Sonya stabs Cooper in the shoulder from behind. A fight breaks out between them. Sonya climbs onto the table, jumps on Cooper, knocks him to the floor, the blade of the knife goes right over Cooper’s shoulder. The guy grabs Sonya by the hair, rips off the skin from her skull, sticks it on the knife with his eye socket.

Cooper screams heart-rendingly.Communication with Katie is reestablished. She claims that Cooper did not answer her. He lies on the floor, he has no wounds. Katie assures that the player could not have any physical sensations. Cooper demands that the device be removed from the back of his head immediately. Katie says that self-intervention is very dangerous, Cooper may die. We will deactivate, follow the instructions, go to the access point.

Cooper climbs the stairs, approaches the door at the end of the corridor, but is afraid to go inside: there will be something personal behind it, this crap is rummaging in my head.I think I’ll see my mother there hanging from the chandelier. Katie assures that Cooper’s mother is not in the room.

Cooper walks into the bedroom. Where is the access point? And she is not, we just made sure that we broke you to unquestioning obedience. Katie begins to mock Cooper. Look in the mirror. Do you recognize yourself? Soon you will become like your father, go nowhere. Does it scare you? You should have called your mother, only she stayed with you, and you left her. You will never see her again. You are a bad son.Cooper is hysterical, smashes a mirror with his fist, and tries to pick the device out of the back of his head with a shrapnel. The guards rush into the room, grab Cooper, make him sit on a chair. Katie and Saito appear. Cooper yells: where am I? Who you are? What have you done to me?

Cooper is in Saito’s office. He shouts: enough is enough! Katie removes the device from the back of his head, says Saito: It’s only been a second, he’s too susceptible, or the software is too powerful. Saito apologizes to Cooper on behalf of the company.

    Cooper flies to New York.

Cooper returns home, enters his mother’s room. She sits on the bed with glazed eyes. She keeps repeating: why did Cooper leave? I need to call Cooper to make sure he’s safe. But I’m here! The woman picks up the phone and dials her son’s number. Cooper yells: Mommy!

Newly signed Cooper sits in an isolated room with Katie. That activates the application. At this moment, Cooper’s cell phone rings. He shouts: Mommy!

Saito asks Katie: what happened? They called him.I turned off his phone, but when I went out, maybe he did something to him. Sorry, this won’t happen again. Saito: Apparently the input signal is interfering with the loading sequence. Katie: All the brain synapses went off at once, and then they shut down abruptly.

The orderlies carry away Cooper’s corpse. Saito tells Katie: commit everything. Katie fills out the table. Cooper Redfield; test duration 0.04 seconds; reason for failure: interference from the phone; observation: shouted “mommy”.

In Conversation With Michael Deeley, Producer Of Blade Runner And The Italian Job

Is it easier to become a filmmaker now than it used to be?

“Producers have more opportunities now.Amazon and Netflix are suddenly spending tons of money, which is a great boon for the industry and the professionals who work in it. I think everything has become easier in this regard, but earlier the industry was more strictly regulated, and it was easier to understand its mechanisms. It seems to me that now it is very difficult to understand where and how to get funding for the film. For independent filmmakers, the question is how to get the film done. You need to use whatever means you can to convince investors that your film will pay off.But the process of finding a good idea, a cast and a suitable director has remained the same – I don’t think that has changed. ”

What advice would you give to aspiring filmmakers?

“Do not think that you will immediately find yourself in paradise – it is not so. I would suggest starting from the beginning. Regardless of who you want to become, start with the basics – get hired as an editor assistant, clapperboard person, third assistant in the audio department, and so on. This has its advantages: firstly, you will understand how to make money, and secondly, when you become a director, producer or whatever, everyone in your crew will know that you started with the basics and have come a long way. , and not just graduated from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and decided to become a director. “

    Which films do you like?

“Actually, from my films, I would have watched only one tape, and that is“ The Italian Robbery ”. I like quite unpretentious films, for example “My Big Greek Wedding”. Basically these are comedy or romantic films with a straightforward plot, but apart from “The Robbery” I have not created anything like that. There is a film that does not look like any of my pictures, but I also like it – this is “Mamma Mia!” I am confident that the sequel will be truly successful. They kept the entire cast, and even if the actors are not so young, it will definitely work. There are not many such films ”.

Which of your tapes evokes the most vivid emotions in you?

“My God. The film that evokes joyful emotions is, of course, The Italian Robbery. Blade Runner makes you feel successful. There is some annoyance that not everything went smoothly in The Deer Hunter, but Oscar interrupts him. I don’t think any of these films are perfect.Even in “The Robbery” there were moments where we should have done differently. ”

Blade Runners, Deer Hunters and Blowing the Bloody Doors Off: My Life in Cult Movies by Michael Deer and Matthew Field in edition from The History Press is now available for purchase.

90,000 how to combine sports activities with benefits for others

    News text

In Russia, more and more projects are emerging that combine sports and socially useful activities: these can be charitable initiatives that help the elderly or people with disabilities socialize, initiatives aimed at developing disadvantaged urban areas, or there can be projects related to the environment. They are going to discuss their prospects in Russia in April. Izvestia talked with the authors of several of them about how to combine sports with care for the environment, whether a social direction can help the development of the main sports discipline in the region and where to look for a point that unites all these ideas.

    “The safest distance”

People with garbage bags run through the park, picking up trash along the way. This plogging is a new sport that has started to gain popularity in the world in recent years. He also exists in Russia.

The first plogging in Moscow – and indeed, as it turned out later, in the country – took place in April 2018. For several years it took place in the south of the Russian capital, the races were based mainly in the area of the Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve, but this year they should cover the territory of the entire city.

Its organizer and founder of the first plogging community, Olga Pugach, found out about it, as she herself says, “in a multistage way”: “In February 2018, my friend from Mospriroda sent a link to a video on YouTube – as it turned out later, it was a story on German television about the direction that recently appeared in Sweden, which was called plogging. There some athletic, fit Swedish men and women who were happy with life were running and collecting trash. ”

An acquaintance suggested that Olga organize something similar in Moscow. Taking a closer look at the seemingly clean and well-maintained parks, Olga realized that in reality there is a lot of household rubbish surrounding those walking in them. And she invited the runners she knew and parents with children to try. They supported the idea – several dozen people took part in the first race.

Now the number of participants fluctuates between 25 and 50. However, the organizers themselves have set a limit on the maximum number of people: today more than 50 people will not be able to join one race. Otherwise, it will be difficult to keep track of everyone, and instead of collecting garbage, you will end up with a “carpet bombing of the park,” explains Olga Pugach.

Unlike regular sports races, plogging participants are usually offered one, rather than several, course options. But running, as the organizers say, is not the main thing. Both people with good training and those who have never been involved in jogging, but are interested in the environmental agenda, can participate. And the age of the participants ranges from six to 68 years. You can register for the race free of charge, through the form on Timepad.

At the start, everyone is given garbage bags and rubber gloves. The column is always accompanied by the leading and trailing runners. They often take with them a supply of garbage bags – in case the plan for garbage collection has to be overfulfilled.

“We joke that we are the safest sport in terms of social distance,” Olga Pugach laughs now. – We have a garbage bag on our outstretched arm, so no one in their right mind wants to come close to us, gloves are on their hands, and we often have to cover our nose with bandanas.

Since 2019, ploggings in Moscow have been held regularly, once a season. The first one took place in the park named after Shkulev in the Tekstilshchiki metropolitan area. All the rest were held on the basis of the Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve.True, with going beyond the park: the participants have already managed to reach Kuzminki and the Moskva River embankment.

This year it is planned to expand the geography: the races will be held once a month, and their tracks will unite the territories of all the museums-reserves. The closest and first race of this season is now scheduled for April 10th.

    Inclusion at

Plogging, which allows you to combine pleasant and useful for yourself with useful for nature, is one of the most striking and, possibly, understandable examples of what social sport is, which carries additional meanings and allows you to make life a little better not only for yourself. but also for others.

However, sometimes the social direction can be viewed as an opportunity to help not only the main addressees, but also the sport itself. For example, in Nizhny Novgorod there is a program “No unattainable heights”, within which professional instructors conduct climbing classes for children with disabilities of various nosologies (including, for example, for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) or cerebral palsy), as well as for disabled people over 18 years old, for whom this is often almost the only available way of socialization.

The author of the project, Maxim Kavinov, is an entrepreneur. Most of his life he was involved in IT projects, but 10 years ago he got a disability himself: “It so happened that at the age of 36 I became disabled. And so, in order for the brains to work, I decided to get into this new story for myself. ”

Specialists from the Institute of Rehabilitation and Human Health of the N.N. N.I.Lobachevsky.

At the same time, initially, says Maxim, it was also about an attempt to push the development of rock climbing in the region: “We have only this year built a second climbing wall in the region, and all this time it was the only one. And when we started doing all this, I told the guys – let’s try to start with the development of the social direction, suddenly it will help to draw attention to sports. ”

Today, the center is attended by about 200 children. The authors of the project have won the presidential grant competition four times, as well as several other federal and regional competitions. Experts from Germany recently came to get acquainted with the experience – they said that they did not have such projects.

The center has already prepared its own program for adaptive climbing, a training program for specialists and a competition program in this discipline, and now they are looking for an opportunity to enter the federal level in order to popularize these areas by sharing their experience with other regions.

True, when asked if all this helped the development of rock climbing in the region, Maxim hesitated: “Well, how to say.”

    Community Respect

There are other areas as well – for example, bachata classes, which the capital’s dance studios conduct free of charge for students or, within the framework of the Moscow Longevity project, for the elderly.

In the Stavropol Territory in 2017, through street sports, they decided to help residents better understand adolescents living in areas of the city that were considered disadvantaged, and to help children gain additional motivation.

    – At some point, we just realized that in Russia there are millions of people who are engaged, for example, break dance, parkour, ride BMX bicycles, are engaged in other areas, but there is no support for them. And we began to develop the idea of the prize, which would motivate the guys to achieve better results, ”says the author of the idea, Valentin Rabotenko, assistant to the deputy of the Stavropol City Duma and one of the authors of the idea.

This is how the Offbeats award appeared in Stavropol, aimed at supporting the authors of cultural and sports “street” projects. At first, explains Valentin Rabotenko, they did it practically “on the knee”, but immediately after the launch the site collapsed from the number of requests: “A few days later we had 30 thousand unique users on the site, but the site itself was not there.”

After that, the award was held in Zheleznovodsk, this year it is planned to hold it in Pyatigorsk, and after that it will be carried from region to region. The winners, explains Valentin Rabotenko, can receive a financial prize, mentoring support, but the main thing, he is sure, is “respect of the community”.

All this, in his opinion, allows showing children that the streets are not a place for destructive habits, but “for sports and creativity.”

    Feel More Resilient

The number of projects combining sports and social initiatives in Russia is growing, but the main difficulty is that they often dissolve among different directions, says Oksana Oracheva, general director of the Vladimir Potanin Charitable Foundation.

Since 2020, the fund has been implementing a special program dedicated to such projects, and in April it plans to hold a thematic conference “Sport and Society”, bringing together representatives of the sports industry and those who develop socially significant initiatives in this direction.

    – For example, if we are talking about joint sports activities for older people, in which direction should this go – about sports or about active aging? Because these kinds of initiatives stand at a crossroads, they do not become central to the selection of projects to support.
