15 Best Shampoos for Oily Hair 2021 — Neutrogena, L’Oréal Paris, Kerastase, More

If you’re no stranger to dealing with an oily scalp, you may be used to loading up on one too many dry shampoos as a solution. While these powder cleansers are a suitable temporary solution for sopping up excess oil and avoiding daily hair washing — you don’t want to solely rely on them.

“When dry shampoo particles build up on the scalp over time, they can clog hair follicles, trap oil, and prevent normal skin cell turnover,” Nancy Samolitis, a board-certified dermatologist in Los Angeles previously shared with Allure. It creates something of a domino effect since Samolitis explained that “this can lead to overgrowth of bacteria and yeast that normally live on the scalp and cause folliculitis, or the inflammation of hair follicles, and dandruff.” Folliculitis can, in turn, lead to red pimples and pustules — sort of like acne on the scalp.

All that being said, it’s best to moderate your dry shampoo usage with a traditional liquid shampoo for oily hair, which will essentially work the same way a powder does: absorbing oil, without leaving any residue. When seeking out the best shampoo for oily hair, cosmetic chemist Ginger King advises against buying formulas formulated with silicones. Some silicones may accumulate on the scalp over time, similarly to the way powder particles do, King explains.

This advice was a common thread among the experts we spoke to. Chicago-based hairstylist Nick Stenson also recommends steering clear of silicones. “Silicone tends to coat the hair, making it heavy, which counteracts the benefits of the volumizing,” he explains.

What’s more, “continued used of silicones over time can weigh down the hair,” board-certified dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, who is based in New York City, previously told Allure

The best shampoos for oily hair are those that are formulated with clarifying and exfoliating ingredients such as alpha hydroxy acids, which reduce residue, oil, and build-up on the scalp, says King. New York City board-certified dermatologist Charlotte Birnbaum agrees, who previously told Allure to look for a clarifying shampoo for a deep hair cleanse, preferably one with salicylic acid.

Now that you know which ingredients to look out for — and which to avoid — the next step is to adjust your washing frequency. “For an oily scalp, I recommend more frequent shampooing, up to once a day,” Birnbaum previously told Allure

All of this really depends on your hair type and texture, though. For example, Birnbaum explained that those with curly hair might be able to get away with less frequent shampooing — once per week — while folks with finer hair may need to shampoo more often. Everyone is different, so do a test run for a few weeks to see how your hair responds to a new regimen.

Before jumping into a fresh washday routine, get your shampoo options in order. We tapped several experts to find the best shampoos for oily hair that are available across a range of price points.

12 Best Shampoos for Oily Hair 2021

Amazon/Walmart

Shiny hair is great and all, but there’s a fine line between glossy and greasy. If your scalp is naturally oily, dry shampoo might not always cut it. Thankfully, the best shampoo for oily hair can help zap grease and buildup that contribute to the, erm, root of the problem. 😉

If you have oily or greasy hair, you’re likely better off picking a clear shampoo than a milky one. And you shouldn’t necessarily shy away from sulfates: They sometimes get a bad rap, but they’re particularly good for lifting oil and dirt from your roots. Avoid products with labels like “anti-frizz”—they’re probably formulated with hydrating ingredients that could make your hair oilier. Caring for greasy hair doesn’t end once you’re done shampooing: If you use conditioner, you should keep it to your ends, and you might consider investing in a boar bristle brush, which will help distribute natural oils throughout your hair so they don’t settle at your scalp.

Read on for 12 shampoos that will leave you with shiny (not greasy!) strands. While you’re taking care of your hair, check out the best shampoos for color-treated hair, thinning hair, and hard water. And give yourself an at-home spa day with these DIY hair masks.

14 Of The Best Shampoos For Greasy Hair 2021

.

If you find yourself counting down the hours until you can wash your hair again and achieve that squeaky-clean freshness, you might be using the wrong shampoo. Yes, washing your hair is basic hygiene etiquette, but washing it too often can actually cause more problems than it solves.

For those with hair that’s particularly prone to turning greasy fast, investing in a clarifying shampoo that’s specifically designed to cleanse away not only dirt and muck, but also keep oiliness in check – almost like powder for your hair – is a no brainer.

We tested the best shampoos for greasy hair on the market to see which ones combatted oily roots effectively. These are our winners:

What causes greasy hair?

Just like an oily t-zone, the reason your scalp isn’t feeling so fresh is down to too much sebum being produced. This can be due to a number of reasons, from genetics to hormones, as well as environmental factors such as pollution or excessive sweating caused by home workouts.

Our immediate response is to grab a dry shampoo or wash our hair more frequently, but this can lead to an even greasier situation. Using too many products can cause a build up on the scalp, while over-washing will strip hair of its natural oils, instigating even more unwanted oil production.

Depending on your hair type, try limiting your washes to three times a week to retrain your locks. We’ll admit, the first few weeks will be greasy but your hair will thank you in the long-run.

How we test

Our panel of 350 testers – with hair textures ranging from straight to afro – tried 23 brands of shampoo (all with claims to tackle greasiness) for two weeks.

They made a note of how well they cleaned hair, their lather and whether they noticed any long-lasting benefits. They also reported if hair felt more hydrated, smoother, shinier or more volumised.

In the Hearst Institute lab, we applied artificial sebum to hair switches and used a Sebumeter to measure oil and sebum levels after using each shampoo, to test how well it controlled oil.

Below, we’ve also jotted down whether our winning shampoos contain parabens, silicones or sulphates, in case they’re dealbreakers.

Here are the best shampoos for greasy hair to add to your bathroom shelfie:

The 10 Best Shampoos for Oily Hair

When there’s excess sebum on your scalp it can make its way down your hair, causing it to look greasy. Jenny Balding, stylist and co-owner Cutler Salon x Arlo SoHo, says there are a number of contributing factors to oily hair, but it can be exacerbated by not rinsing product off thoroughly in the shower and choosing styling products too heavy for your hair type. So if you’re struggling with oily hair, take a look at your shampoo. Ahead, the seven best shampoos for oily hair so you can stop the grease before it even starts.

1 Sachajuan Scalp Shampoo

With lactic and salicylic acid, this formula ensures you’ll get a clean scalp that will promote healthy (non-oily) hair growth. It’s also gentle enough to use on color-treated hair.

2 Low-Poo Original Mild Lather Cleanser

This ultra-gentle cleanser adds back hydration that curls need, while mix of castor oil, chamomile, and hop extract strip away excess oil and buildup.

3 Scalp Revival Charcoal + Coconut Oil Micro-exfoliating Shampoo

Briogeo

Give your scalp some extra TLC with this exfoliating shampoo. It uses tea tree oil to reduce scalp irritation and vegetable-derived micro-exfoliators to remove dead skin and product buildup.

5 Biolage R.A.W. Scalp Care Antidandruff Shampoo

We call this the answer to dandruff prayers. It contains the highest concentration of salicylic acid possible to purify a flaky scalp.

6 Purifying Shampoo with Jujube Bark Extract

This shampoo from famed French hairstylist Christophe Robin uses jujube bark extract to rebalance the scalp’s pH level and absorb excess sebum.

7 Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Special Shampoo

Tea tree oil is the key ingredient in this shampoo to clean the scalp of buildup and impurities. Plus we love the spa-like lavender and peppermint scent.

8 Suave Essentials Daily Clarifying Shampoo

If you’re dealing with an oily scalp and dry ends, this is the shampoo for you. It balances the scalp’s pH levels and removes any residue without stripping hair of moisture.

When it comes to giving greasy hair a good scrub, the struggle is real. Some shampoos and hair products work wonders—for like 24 hours—but by the next day, they leave your hair feeling like an oil slick. Other hair products can just leave you greasier than before. When you’re lathering up, the wrong shampoos won’t cut it against built-up dirt and grime, and don’t even think about using anything “hydrating” or “ultra-moisturizing” unless you want your lengths to be weighed down by extra gunk.

For those trying to tame oily hair, it’s time to get selective about how you wash. As celebrity hairstylist Laura Polko previously told us, shampoo and conditioner can make or break grease-prone hair. If there’s oil or extra hydrating ingredients lurking in the formulas, it doesn’t matter how many times you wash it—once it’s dry, hair will eventually just get weighed down again and again.

“When a product isn’t the right fit, this can cause your hair to become extra oily throughout the day and damage the style you spent all morning perfecting,” said Polko. It’s time to treat your scalp and hair to the right fit. Below, the best shampoo and conditioners for oily hair that will keep you fresh and clean with every wash.

The $10 price-tag is wallet-friendly but doesn’t skimp on quality, as it gently breaks through the gunk and build-up that leaves you greasy. It’s dermatologist-approved, sulfate-free, and pH-balanced to keep hair healthy and happy.

Oribe The Cleanse Clarifying Shampoo

Washing your hair with a clarifying shampoo once or twice a week can help your scalp press reset. If you’re on the hunt for a heavy duty cleanser, look no further than Oribe’s clarifying shampoo. It’s made with volcanic ash (seriously), green tea extract, and Oribe’s signature complex for a hardcore scrub that won’t strip away your natural oils.

Superzero makes clean hair products that are all plant-based and plastic-free. This conditioner bar features a nourishing blend of avocado and coconut oils to detangle knots without leaving your tresses slick or heavy. Pair it with its matching shampoo bar for months of better washes (each bar is the equivalent to two shampoo bottles, so it’ll last a while).

OUAI Detox Shampoo

OUAI’s Detox Shampoo takes clean to a whole different level. The formula uses an apple cider vinegar-keratin infusion to cleanse away dirt, oil, and build-up while leaving hair shiny and strong. It’s safe for all hair types, and smells unbelievable—a blend of roses, champagne, and sweet lychee.

Christophe Robin Purifying Shampoo & Detangling Gelee

This shampoo and conditioner gives your scalp some serious TLC. It’s infused with sea minerals, like zinc, calcium, and potassium, so it strengthens strands as you wash. And while other purifying cleansers can be harsh, Christophe Robin’s blend is soothing on even the most sensitive scalps. Pro tip: Pair it with Christophe Robin’s Cleansing Purifying Scrub ($53) to give a tired, oily scalp a total reboot.

Verb Ghost Shampoo & Conditioner

There’s a reason Verb’s light-but-powerful hair care set is called Ghost—it feels like nothing’s there. Infused with hydrating moringa oil, Verb’s shampoo and conditioner leave your hair weightless and clean, without a streak of grease in sight. It’s suitable for all hair types.

Foligain Triple Action Shampoo & Conditioner for Thinning Hair

Foligain’s shampoo is great for cleansing and adding volume to ultra-fine, thinning hair. The science-backed products contain natural ingredients that nourish the scalp while making lengths look shinier.

Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal + Biotin Dry Shampoo

Skipping a wash can be a big no-no for those with oily hair, however, Briogeo’s all-natural dry shampoo makes for an excellent workaround. Using charcoal, this powerful dry shampoo draws impurities straight from the scalp, while clay and rice starches absorb leftover oil in your strands. That way, you can skip a wash (or two) and still feel fresh.

10 Best Shampoos for Oily Hair in India

An oily scalp can be so extremely frustrating to deal with. Washing your hair every alternate day becomes a routine because of the rate at which your scalp secretes oil. Your hair tends to look weighed down and greasy within a day of shampooing, and for anyone who isn’t a big fan of the slicked look, this is not good news. Shampooing too often can have detrimental effects on your hair. To help prevent this, I’ve put together a list of the 10 best shampoos for oily hair. But first, let’s look at what kind of shampoo for oily hair you should choose.

How To Choose The Best Shampoo For Oily Hair?

When choosing a shampoo, people make the common mistake of going by their hair type. If you really want a shampoo to work, you need to find a match for your scalp rather than your hair. If you have an oily scalp with dry hair, you still need to get a shampoo that will cleanse your scalp rather than hydrate your hair. Just invest in a good conditioner that will take care of the latter. Following I’ve put together a list of tips to keep in mind when choosing a shampoo.

  • Do not buy shampoos with “hydrating”, “smoothing”, “moisturizing”, or “curl defining” on the label. These shampoos tend to be a tad too hydrating for oily hair.
  • Go for shampoos with labels that read “strengthening,” “volumizing,” or “balancing.” These shampoos do not add too much moisture to your scalp and help remove excess oils.
  • If your hair is extremely oily, a daily clarifying shampoo will be able to get rid of the oils while being gentle on your scalp. However, you need to invest in a good shampoo for oily hair that is gentle as drying out your scalp will only stimulate more oil production.
  • Investing in a super clarifying treatment is also a good idea for extremely oily scalps. Using these shampoos once every couple of weeks will help keep your scalp clean.
  • Look for shampoos with salicylic acid as this helps break down and remove any buildup that might have settled on your scalp.

Updated: 22/05/2020
Even if you only use a minimum of cosmetics, shampoo will definitely be present on your bathroom shelf. Despite the fact that this product is in contact with hair and scalp for a short time and is washed off at the end, nevertheless, along with cleansing, it is able to solve a number of other problems: moisturize, add volume, smoothness, get rid of dandruff. A special approach is necessary if the hair is of the oily type, since in this case it is necessary to wash it more often, thereby it gets more damage.

Unfortunately, no matter how attractive the idea is that your hair can be taught to wash it less often, this is just a myth. And this procedure has to be carried out as it gets dirty and preferably with a shampoo designed for this type of hair, since it is he who solves the main task: thoroughly cleanses the scalp and regulates the sebaceous glands.

And when the shampoo is selected correctly, you can really wash them less often, but your hair will never become normal and dry, because. This is a genetic feature, so this care will always have to be adhered to.

What are the shampoos for oily hair and what are their differences:

  • Liquid and dry. Such products usually have a gel-like consistency and on contact with water form a foam, after cleaning they require rinsing with water. And dry, respectively, in the form of a powder are applied to the hair and do not require rinsing.
  • Medicinal. They will not only eliminate dirt, but also work with the causes of excessive fat content.
  • For long hair. They are the same, as a rule, for oily hair at the roots and dry at the ends. The products contain additional nutritional components to protect the ends from drying out.
  • Sulfate-free. Often organically certified, do not contain aggressive surfactants and do not dry out the scalp and hair along the entire length.
  • Anti-dandruff. After all, oily hair can have such a problem, and the nature of dandruff will be different than on dry hair.
  • For fine hair. They’re volumizing shampoos.
  • For smooth, shiny hair.
  • 2 in 1. They contain conditioning additives and allow you not to use the conditioner after cleansing.
  • Promising hair restoration.

Added to all these seemingly different purposes, one shampoo can solve several problems. That is, it is quite possible to find a sulfate-free product for oily hair that gives volume to the hair.Or an anti-dandruff product and for a smoothness and shine. Thus, when choosing, the following criteria must be taken into account:

  • Hair type. If the hair is oily, then it is for this type to choose a product. And it is undesirable to consider products for all types, since they not only will not solve the problem, but can further aggravate it.
  • Availability of additional functions. This can be to eliminate dandruff, moisturize hair, add shine, restore.
  • Types of surfactants: sulfate or sulfate-free.

We present the rating of shampoos for oily hair 2020. Top 20 products, which were selected by our experts based on user reviews and ratings.

The best organic shampoos for oily hair

Surfactants form the basis of any shampoo. And most products contain SLS – sodium lauryl sulfate or SLES – sodium laureth sulfate, that is, sulfate compounds that can irritate the skin, cause itching, dry hair.

On the one hand, for oily scalp you really need a more thorough cleansing and it seems that drying will not hurt, but the rest of the length also suffers from this. On the other hand, in response to the drying effect, the skin begins to secrete even more fat. Therefore, in the presence of such a problem as oily hair roots, it makes sense to pay attention to sulfate-free shampoos, the washing formula of which is based on mild surfactants.

What you will have to face at the beginning of using such shampoos is that until the hair gets used to it, washing its mild detergent components will be worse and it will be necessary to increase the number of applications.

But later they will be washed just as well as with the usual means. Thanks to the healing of the scalp and the absence of aggressive substances, the hair roots will stay clean for much longer. In addition, these shampoos will preserve the color of colored hair for longer and can be applied after keratin straightening.

Organic certificates guarantee that there are no components hazardous to health, these products are not tested on animals and do not harm the environment.

True, there are also disadvantages to such formulations, softer surfactants will foam worse, without silicones and chemical conditioning agents, the hair will be less smooth and dense.

5 DNC Oily Hair

The fifth position is taken by the representative of the Latvian organic cosmetics brand DNC. It has a natural composition, a medium price range and a high degree of effectiveness.

Among the components of DNC Oily Hair, a large percentage are extracts of nettle, calamus and burdock, plants recognized by folk medicine and modern research as one of the best for strengthening, growing and protecting hair. There is also burdock oil extracted from the roots of burdock, an extract of oak bark, rich in astringent tannins, indispensable for the care of oily skin of the face and scalp. Cocamidpropyl betaine is used – a mild cleaning and foam stabilizing component with an antiseptic effect.

The list of ingredients includes: elastin, vitamin C, extracts of lavender, rose hips, currant leaves, sage, hyaluronic acid, formic acid. Instead of the aggressive SLS, the manufacturer added a recognized safe analogue – Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate.

The only disadvantage is that the product is sold in a limited number of stores. Also, many find the bottle inconvenient.

Pros:

  • Natural composition.
  • Efficiency.
  • Economical consumption.
  • Washes well, lathers abundantly, rinses off easily.
  • List of ingredients with translation into Russian.

Which shampoo for oily hair is better to buy

When choosing a shampoo for hair, the main thing is to understand that it is this product that should be selected according to the type of scalp, and the condition of the hair length can be safely entrusted to additional care products that will be applied avoiding the roots. And this approach will effectively cleanse your hair and maintain its beauty, strength and shine.

It is impossible to choose a universal remedy, since in addition to the type of hair, you need to take into account their length, condition and the desired effect. But if you want to reduce the oiliness of the scalp, then we advise you to pay attention to medicinal products with sebum-regulating properties. And for long hair, it is advisable to use a shampoo that will moisturize dry ends.

With the transition to organic products, your hairstyle will acquire natural strength and, perhaps, the oily hair will go away on its own, since one of the reasons for its appearance could just be the irritating effects of chemicals, but the absence of inorganic conditioning substances leads to hair tangled and less smooth …This, again, can be corrected by using balms and masks.

And of course, owners of oily hair should always have a bottle of dry shampoo in reserve, so that in case of unforeseen circumstances they can quickly give their hair freshness, lightness and volume. Be beautiful and happy shopping!

Shampoo for oily hair: choosing an effective

The second part of the soap opera is about shampoo for oily hair, it is also considered a shampoo for volume, and for therapeutic scalp care for dandruff. Here is such a universal remedy, it turns out =))

It was not sweet for beauties before, when they washed their hair on the street in a basin)) We read about shampoo for dry and damaged hair here, and below we will talk about oily hair.

Shampoo for oily hair

Our hair quickly becomes oily when the sebaceous glands are actively working , therefore, when choosing a shampoo, we will look at its softness so as not to provoke the sebaceous glands to work more.

Shampoos should contain fewer oils and conditioners, and surfactants are effective but mild, so as not to irritate and dry the scalp.

Shampoo for oily hair usually contains: clay, plant extracts, astringent essential oils, minerals.

Natural clays effectively reduce the oiliness of the scalp and hair without causing sebum production. They also remove dead skin cells from the skin, allowing it to breathe.

Extracts for oily hair: especially good are rosemary, nettle, juniper and horsetail, St. John’s wort, yarrow, calendula.

Natural shampoos with minerals and clay:

  • Zion Health, Adama, Clay Minerals Shampoo: Shampoo with Minerals, Panthenol, Salt and Proteins
  • Zion Health, Adama, Clay Minerals Shampoo, Peach Jasmine
  • Zion Health, Adama, Ancient Minerals Shampoo, White Coconut

Of the essential oils , the most commonly used oils are tea tree, mint, rosemary and citrus oils.Citrus essential oils also enhance shine and protect hair from UV damage!

Shampoo for hair volume

Alpha hydroxy acids perfectly cleanse the scalp, moisturize, gently exfoliate and add shine to the hair. Sometimes glycolic and lactic acid is added to shampoos, as well as extracts of citrus fruits (orange, lemon, cranberry) and sugar cane.

You can buy my ready-made supplementation protocols, take courses in nutritionology and join a closed club, whose members get more knowledge on taking vitamins and dietary supplements.

Good scalp cleansing and gentle, non-aggressive root sebum removal results in hair volume and root lift. Therefore, know – shampoos for hair volume are also shampoos for oily hair!

Shampoos for hair volume:

  • Jason Natural, Thin to Thick, Extra Volume Shampoo with Alpha Acids, Peppermint Essential Oil, Horsetail Extract & Salicylic Acid
  • Organix South, TheraNeem Naturals, Shampoo, Volumizing Therape, volumizing shampoo with herbal extracts, glycerin, panthenol, neem oil, essential oils for oily scalp
  • Acure Organics, Shampoo, Pure Mint + Echinacea Stem Cell, Volumizing Shampoo with Quinoa Protein, Argan Oil (Light Moisture), Peppermint & Rosemary Essential Oils

Anti-dandruff shampoo

The most popular active ingredients in anti-dandruff shampoos: zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfate, salicylic acid.

Salicylic acid not only improves the penetration of active ingredients into the scalp, but also kills bacteria and fights excess skin oiliness.

Beta-caryophyllene also has antimicrobial and fungicidal properties; look for it in the essential oils of clove, yarrow and rosemary.

Good anti-dandruff shampoos:

  • Derma E, Scalp Relief Shampoo, shampoo for dandruff and oily scalp, with salicylic acid, fireweed, tea tree essential oil, neem and burdock extracts
  • Jason Natural, Treatment Shampoo, Dandruff Relief, anti-dandruff shampoo works well for men too. With essential oils of patchouli, rosemary, sulfur and salicylic acid.

Here about deep cleansing shampoos that should be used once a week or less to thoroughly cleanse the scalp and hair from styling products!

For competent and effective hair care, it is important to correctly determine your hair type, as otherwise there is a risk of worsening their condition. Hair is divided into normal, dry, oily and mixed.

  • Normal hair – elastic, moderately fine, not too dry and not very greasy, scalp without dandruff, with a slight combing, up to 50 hairs fall out.

  • Dry hair – thinner, fluffy, fragile.

  • Oily hair – thicker than normal, abundantly covered with grease, more elastic, less water absorption.

  • There are transitional forms between the main types of hair: moderately or excessively dry, moderately or excessively oily .

Obligatory care includes cleansing and daily brushing of the hair.

Of the entire spectrum of hair care procedures, washing is the most important component as it serves both hygienic and cosmetic purposes. For healthy hair, not damaged or depleted, correct and timely washing is the minimum sufficient care procedure.

Today, the most important fighter for the cleanliness and health of hair is shampoo . You need to choose the right shampoo for your type.
The positive results of using the shampoo can be considered clean hair, the absence of fat on it, the shine of the hair after it dries, good combability and obedience, no scalp irritation. To understand that this shampoo is not suitable for you, one or two use is enough, but in order to come to the conclusion that this shampoo is just for you, you need to use it regularly for at least a few weeks. In addition, a good shampoo should remove static electricity from the hair, and most importantly, replace the loss of protein, moisture and nutrients.

After shampooing, it is recommended to apply rinse or conditioner to hair. They can be washable or indelible. The conditioner smoothes, eliminates static electricity, makes combing easier. The conditioner should only be applied to the hair, avoiding the roots and scalp.

Rinse and conditioner have several functions: they make it easier to dry and comb through, and give the hair elasticity. It is better to use shampoo and rinse of the same brand – they correspond to each other in composition, and the action of the rinse complements the action of the shampoo as efficiently as possible. To restore damaged hair, special means for express treatment are intended – they “smooth”, have a regenerating and nourishing effect on the hair follicle and are designed for quick and easy regenerating action. For a longer, complete and deep healing effect, there are masks – they are applied to the hair for 15-20 minutes 1-2 times a week.

INTERESTING FACTS

  • Throughout life, 20-30 hairs can grow from each follicle.

  • Each new hair can grow for 2-7 years and reach more than one meter in length before it enters the “resting” stage, which lasts 3 months.

  • With age, a person tends to decrease the activity of hair growth, and the hair itself becomes shorter.

Types of shampoo.

Shampoos for normal hair should be soft and gentle.A light hygiene product that is not overloaded with nutrients is suitable for washing – it gently cleanses and does not dry the skin. If the hair is of normal type, not dyed or bleached, you can fearlessly use “universal” shampoos that have an average effect.

Shampoos for fine hair . These shampoos are often called voluminous. Detergents contain, in addition to mild detergents, hair strengthening elements (eg keratin, protein or herbal extracts). They contribute to the formation of a light, rough film, create volume and maintain the hairstyle. Proteins and some urea compounds strengthen the hair shaft, making it stiffer. Accordingly, shampoos that add volume and contain proteins are suitable for fine hair. Thanks to these substances, the hair does not stick together so quickly.

Shampoos for oily hair . Oily hair is washed with acidic shampoos containing, for example, cedar nut oil. Detergents for oily hair contain a minimum of nutrients, they do not contain any fatty additives at all. Moreover, antimicrobial and tannin substances are often introduced into such shampoos, which give the hair a “combing” roughness. They are incorporated into shampoo to normalize oil production and prevent hair from sticking shortly after washing.

Shampoos for dry and split ends . For owners of dry hair, special shampoos for this type are suitable; they usually contain a lot of fat additives and moisturizers. These formulations are supplied with lanolin or lecithin and also contain synthetic adhesives that give elasticity and smoothness. If your hair is thin or oily at the roots, but splits at the ends, it is better not to buy conditioner shampoos. Nutritional supplements can be very stressful and will stick together quickly. It is better in this case to use special shampoos for oily hair and, if possible, to carry out a course of treatment. Shampoos for dry hair are rubbed vigorously into the scalp to restore normal sebum production. Before washing, partings are made on the head with a comb and cover the skin with a thin layer of shampoo. With the pads of the fingers of both hands, massage the skin strongly, rubbing shampoo into it.In order for the product to be better and faster absorbed into the skin, it is necessary to tie a heated towel over your head. After a while, shampoo is applied again and the hair is washed.

Shampoos for damaged hair . Bleached or dyed hair is washed with neutral shampoos with a high content of nutrients: bone marrow, egg yolk, etc. Hair damaged by perm or lightening needs special care. It is necessary to use shampoos for damaged hair that contain proteins, jojoba oil and avocado.

Twin shampoos. This is the name of shampoos that not only wash, but also have conditioning properties, that is, they smooth, normalize the hair and nourish its roots. From washing with these products, shine and ease of combing appear. But with long-term use, there can be problems. Additives such as silicones, over time, settle on the surface of the hair, making it heavy and sluggish. If this happens, you need to temporarily use a normal type shampoo.

Anti-dandruff shampoos . They contain detergents that free the scalp from keratinized particles, and additives that inhibit the formation of new dandruff. Namely: a whole complex of active substances – tonic, antiseptic, inhibiting the formation and even crushing it. Anti-dandruff shampoo is used only when it appears.

Shampoos polishing . These shampoos save hair from excess nutritional supplements. They have enhanced detergency. Their use is justified before a perm or dyeing.

Hair rinsing

How often rinse aid is used after washing depends on the condition of the hair and on the preparation. Conventional preparations have enough strength from washing to washing. But there are products with stronger effects, such as silicones and polymers. They are introduced into rinses for severely split ends. If, after the systematic use of this drug, they become lethargic and heavy, you need to wash your hair several times without rinsing.

INTERESTING FACTS

  • In people who are not prone to baldness, each new hair does not differ in its quality from the previous ones; at the same time, each new generation of hair grows thinner and thinner in balding people.

  • Hair is also characterized by such parameters as elasticity and porosity. Healthy hair can stretch up to 30% of its own length, retain moisture up to 50% of its own weight, and at the same time increase in diameter by 20%.

The conditioner makes combing easier: it kind of smoothes the outer scaly layer of the hair, which becomes rough during washing.Rich in lanolin, the conditioner works well for dry and thick hair and is less effective if it is oily and thin (it absorbs too much drug, swells, and falls off and becomes soft five minutes later). In the mixed type (fatty at the roots and dry at the ends), only the ends are processed.

In addition, there are liquid preparations in vials or with a spray that contain light nutrients and retain moisture well. They work best for fine, easily greasy hair. After using these products, the hair does not need to be rinsed (the substance remains on the head).

When we talk about grooming, we mean healthy hair that has certain features, but when these features turn into problems – it’s time to start talking about remedies and professional care.

Medical hair care products also include shampoos, various balms and rinses, but they have a more targeted, point effect and contain a higher concentration of active ingredients.Professional products often contain natural substances that improve hair structure – plant extracts and oils, ceramides, proteins, complexes of vitamins and microelements. Such additional “nutrition” allows you to quickly return a well-groomed appearance even to damaged hair. In addition, professional remedies in combination with medications help to solve many serious problems – to stop hair loss and improve growth.

Professional medical care products and medications are powerful and, if used incorrectly, can be harmful to hair.

Before you start getting rid of various problems, you need to consult a trichologist. Also, the patients of the Clinic are offered medical assistance from cosmetologists and the interdisciplinary approach of other EMC specialists.

How to choose a shampoo for normal, dry and oily hair

The right shampoo is half the battle in your daily cleansing hair and scalp care. The shampoo is selected individually, depending on the type of hair.

I used to always be sure that shampoo should only cleanse the hair and did not even think about the pH level of the scalp, hair and shampoo. It turns out that the acidity level of the shampoo plays a very important role in hair care.

There is a pH level in any shampoo for hair, but the manufacturer does not always indicate it, and if it is not indicated on the labels, then it cannot be calculated without special research. The manufacturer usually writes: shampoo for oily, dry, normal hair. But this does not always correspond to reality, in shampoos for normal hair, the Ph level should be neutral – pH 6-7, and in most cases these shampoos are highly alkaline, especially for mass market products and using them daily, you can simply dry your scalp … Professional brands of hair cosmetics, especially world famous ones, are somehow more responsible for this (at least those that I have tried).

Variants of the pH level designation by the manufacturer: the first photo indicates the exact pH level of 5.8, and the second photo simply indicates that the pH is balanced (optimal) for the scalp.

In the modern cosmetology industry, a pH scale from 0 to 14 is used, where from 0 to 7 is an acidic pH level. PH is considered neutral – 7, this is the pH level of water, and from 7 to 14 – alkaline.

In river waters, the pH level is in the range of 6.5-8.5, approximately the same pH level is greater than 7 in the water (from the tap) which we wash our hair, and it turns out that water itself is already an aggressive medium for hair, therefore shampoos, masks, balms and conditioners contain weak acids that bring the pH value to the optimal value. There are products that regulate the pH level of the water, the slightly acidic pH level is 5-5.5, so it is useful to acidify the water (with lemon, apple cider vinegar) when rinsing your hair.

In seawater, the pH level is 7.9-8.3 – therefore, after swimming in the sea, the hair is coarse, overdried and requires restoration, and in rainwater, the pH level is 4.6-6.0, so it was not in vain that our great-grandmothers washed hair with rain water, it is very soft and ideal for washing hair (the normal pH level of the scalp and hair balance is approximately in the pH range of 4.5-5.5), I do not think that our great-grandmothers, in those days, knew about the pH level and how it affects the condition of the hair, so that great-grandmother’s beauty recipes have a place to be in today’s hair care.

The pH level of the scalp and hair is different: for the scalp, the normal pH level is 5-5.5, and for hair along the entire length of the pH up to 5, despite the fact that the surface of the hair does not have its own pH level, it is transferred from the pH of the scalp and it is distributed through the hair by combing, also from cosmetics (balms, conditioners, masks, lotions, creams, and the more saturated the products are for dry, damaged hair, the lower the pH level is 3.5-5). Each person’s scalp and hair has its own pH level, and depending on this, you need to choose a shampoo.

For normal hair: A person consists of 80% water, respectively, there is a certain amount of moisture in the hair and the hair has a slightly acidic environment. Therefore, the normal pH balance of the scalp and hair is approximately in the pH range of 4.5-5.5. For normal hair, optimal shampoos with a pH level of 5.5 to 7.

For dry hair: Dry hair is brittle, often begins to split, there may be dandruff, itchy scalp or damaged by “chemistry”, coloring. With dry hair, the pH balance of the scalp and hair changes from the normal pH level (acidic) to the alkaline side. Therefore, the optimal pH level for dry hair in shampoo is pH 4.5-7. It is advisable to use shampoos with a low pH level (below 5) for hair after bleaching, dyeing, chemistry, to restore the scalp and hair, but not too long time

For oily hair: Oily hair gets greasy too quickly, thin, lacks volume, in excess of sebum. For such hair, it is better to choose a shampoo with a pH level between 6 and 8 (neutral or alkaline). If you have oily hair and you choose shampoos for oily hair, then they further aggravate the situation, with regular use of such a shampoo, itching, flaking, dandruff (oily seborrhea) is possible, despite the fact that the hair will remain oily and this will not lead to more rare hair washing, why: shampoos for oily hair very “aggressively” cleanse the scalp, drying it out and forcing the sebaceous glands of the scalp to produce even more sebum.

The main truth: you need to choose shampoos that will bring you closer to the normal, natural pH level of 4.5 – 5.5.

pH level in some hair products:

  • balms, conditioners, masks pH from 2.5 (for colored, damaged hair) to 6;
  • soap pH 7.5 to 10;
  • perm, pH 6.8 to 9.1;
  • dyes: toning – pH – 8; oxidizing (enter ammonia) – pH – 9-10; blond – pH 10.5-11;
  • bleaching agents (the most “severe”) pH 12 and above.

If, after shampooing, the hair quickly becomes greasy and hangs down like “icicles”, then this shampoo is too acidic. Choose a shampoo with a higher pH level.

If, after shampooing, the hair is coarse, matted, difficult to comb, it may even appear an itchy scalp, then the shampoo is too alkaline. Choose a shampoo with a lower pH level.

Acid shampoos (pH up to 7) are suitable for frequent use, in an acidic environment the hair shrinks and the scales are closed and smoothed. Alkaline shampoos (pH greater than 7) you also need to have in your arsenal of products, but they are not often used, these are the very deep cleansing shampoos that are needed to remove all styling products, silicones and other dirt from the hair. In an alkaline environment, the hair swells and, accordingly, the cuticle scales open.

Scheme of using acid and alkaline shampoos, depending on the type of hair

All beautiful and healthy hair!
