Halloween costume and decoration ideas for your last-minute Australian celebration
The argument as to whether Australians should celebrate Halloween seems to have been won — or lost, depending on who you are.
But Halloween could do with some Australianising. After all, giant pumpkins are nearly as unseasonal down under as snowmen at Christmas.
Here, then, are some genuine Australian ideas for your spooky costumes and decorations.
Bunyip
This 1935 drawing of a bunyip shows one interpretation of the myth.(National Library of Australia: Artist unknown)Tales of large creatures that lurk in rivers, swamps and billabongs have been told in Australia since long before white settlement.
One theory is that Aboriginal elders told the stories to scare children from playing alone near the water’s edge.
Descriptions of the animal range from “half man, half fish” to “half crocodile, half emu”, but it is often depicted as a hippopotamus-sized animal with a dog-like head.
Or you could look to 2016 Australian thriller Red Billabong, which had its own take on the appearance of the mystical monster.

Big cat
Strap on some ears, draw on some whiskers and pop in the plastic fangs, because rumours of big cats abound in Australia.
For decades people across the country have reported bushland encounters with panthers, leopards, cougars or pumas — although rarely lions or tigers.
At least three state governments have officially dealt with reports of big cats in Australia.(www.chinohillsstatepark.org)In 1979 their existence was debated in West Australian parliament, with Labor member David Evans reading a letter from a farmer blaming recent sheep killings on a strange animal “the size of a large dog, cat-like with long tail”.
A 2003 NSW inquiry found it was “more likely than not” that big cats were roaming the bush, but an investigation nine years later concluded the sightings were probably of feral domestic cats.
A test on the tail of a 1.5 metre long big cat shot in 2005 in Dargo, in south-east Victoria, found the animal was in fact an impressively large feral cat.
Yowie
Yowie spotters have compared the creature to Chewbacca from Star Wars.(Supplied)The yowie has been described as a tall, hairy, ape-like creature, similar to a yeti, sasquatch, or Chewbacca from Star Wars.
In the late 1800s a long debate over the existence of the creature raged between amateur naturalist Henry James McCooey and Australian Museum curator Edward Pierson Ramsay.
In 1893 newspaper The Braidwood Dispatch reported that a “hairy man” had been captured and killed east of Canberra.
Yowie sightings are still common in some parts of New South Wales and Queensland.
Former Queensland Nationals senator Bill O’Chee claimed to have seen a yowie while a school student in the 1970s.
Drop bear
Stories of the drop bear have struck fear into many a backpacker.
Stories of a koala-like animal with powerful forearms and large teeth are often told to overseas tourists unfamiliar with the Australian bush.
In a tongue-in-cheek entry on its website, the Australian Museum says the animal may wait perched in a tree for up to four hours before ambushing an unsuspecting animal from above.
Visitors intending to bushwalk in “drop bear habitat” are often told that smearing Vegemite behind their ears will repel the animal — although according to the museum, there is no evidence that such a folk remedy works.

Man in ‘fairly realistic’ bear costume harasses real bears in Alaska
Authorities want to talk to a man who donned a fairly realistic bear costume — head and all — and wore it when harassing a bear and two sows trying to feed on pink salmon in an Alaska river.
The incident happened Monday on the Chilkoot River near Haines, said Alaska Fish and Game Assistant Area Management Biologist Mark Sogge.
It wasn’t immediately known what the man was trying to accomplish.
A crowd had gathered at a weir, used to count fish, because the sow and two cubs have frequently been showing up there to feed during the salmon run.
The crowd, which is kept at a safe distance from the weir, became startled when a man decked out in a bear outfit ran through the area Monday evening.
The man began to jump up and down, and then got close to the cubs, within five to 10 feet, Sogge said.
Alaska Fish and Game technician Lou Cenicola moved the sow out the way for the man’s safety and then tried to talk to the man, which Sogge said is a little outside Cenicola’s normal duties.
“Our job is to count fish,” Sogge said.
The man refused to identify himself, Cenicola said.
Sogge reported the man told the technician: “You have the license plate number. You figure it out.”
The man then drove off without ever removing the costume head and revealing his face.
Wildlife officials reported the incident to troopers, including the license plate number. Troopers are investigating, spokeswoman Megan Peters said. If warranted, the man could face wildlife harassment charges.
“This is not the first time we’ve encountered a man in a bear suit,” Peters said.
The other incident of a man in a bear suit came during the forest fair in Girdwood, just south of Anchorage, a few years back. That man’s arrest was captured on film for the now-canceled “Alaska State Troopers” reality TV show.
Haines is about 500 miles east of Anchorage, near the top of Alaska’s southeastern panhandle.

Australia joins U.S. in diplomatic boycott of Beijing Olympics
WELLINGTON, New Zealand – Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Wednesday that he would join the US in a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Games over human rights concerns.
Morrison said it should come as no surprise that Australian officials would boycott the event after the nation’s ties with China broke in recent years.
“I am doing this because it is in Australia’s national interest,” Morrison said. “It’s the right thing to do.”
He added that Australian athletes would still be able to compete.

Citing human rights abuses, Morrison said China has been critical of Australia’s efforts to have a strong defense force in the region “particularly with regard to, more recently, our efforts to acquire nuclear-powered submarines.” for decision.”
He said his government was very happy to talk to China about their differences.
“There has been no impediment from our side, but the Chinese government has not consistently accepted those opportunities for our meeting,” Morrison said.
Rights groups have called for a complete boycott of the Games, accusing China of rights abuses against ethnic minorities. The US and Australian decisions fall short of those calls, but come at an extraordinarily turbulent time for international relations and have been met with criticism from China.
The Australian Olympic Committee said arrangements for 40 or more Australian athletes to compete in the Games would not be affected by Morrison’s announcement.
“Our biggest challenge is to get athletes safely to Beijing, to compete safely and to bring them home safely,” said committee chief executive Matt Carroll.
Carroll said in a statement: “Our Australian athletes have been training and competing with this Olympic dream for four years and we are doing everything in our power to ensure that we can help them succeed. “
90,000 comics, GIF animation, video, the best intellectual humor.A Scottish journalist in Australia was allowed to hold a deadly lying bear
First, she is put on a special protective anti-bear suit, anti-bear mittens and anti-bear boots. Then an Australian wallowing bear specialist gives a quick reference on camera about the traits and origins of wallowing bears – they are close relatives of koalas, but differ from them in the same way that dingo dogs differ from domestic dogs.
Also, according to his words, the author of the term “lying bear” is James Cook himself when he, together with James Banks, witnessed how these hellish creatures fell on them from the trees with an endless jack.
Then they put a rolling bear, previously tamed with beer, on the journalist, and she tries to maintain her presence of mind and not to panic, because the rolling bears very sensitively determine the fear of the victim and as soon as they understand that you are afraid of them, they immediately sink their claws into you.
Then she tries to explain to the audience what is happening and pass on her knowledge about the lying bears, but suddenly the bear starts to behave more actively and adapt to where to plunge its fangs, she feels a growing panic, the message from the Australian that the insurance for the attack of the lying bears does not cover does not help either. to calm her nerves, but at the very last moment the Australian specialist intercepts a dangerous predator waving its claws and saves the journalist from certain death.

Tactical clothing for hunting at a bargain price
More and more people are now hunting. This is not only a great way to spend time immersed in the world of wild nature far from civilization, forgetting about the daily routine, but, to some extent, a very interesting sport. Finding, tracking down and getting a trophy is not an easy task, and you cannot do without special devices, ammunition and auxiliary tools, as in any other sport. Of course, success largely depends on the skill of the hunter and the correct choice of the hunting place, but the equipment should not fail at the most crucial moment. So, what do you need to be ready for the most unexpected natural conditions? What if you decide to combine hunting and fishing? How to choose the right accessories?
How many people – so many opinions. The demands placed on these products are very high and the fabrics must be strong enough to withstand wild vegetation and heavy use. Waterproof hunting clothing should protect you in the pouring rain, and at the same time be comfortable and easy to use.
Experienced hunters recommend visiting a specialized hunting clothing store. Their assortment is amazing, here you can find equipment for any season, type, and natural conditions.
we will analyze what you need for a comfortable hunt.

- Vest or light jacket
- Cap
You also need a raincoat, rubber boots, gloves, bandolier, backpack and binoculars.Impressive, isn’t it? Where can you find all this of suitable quality, at an affordable price and in one place?

Around the same time, the whole world began to twist.Merrythought decided to follow the fashion here and released a new hit – Twisty Toys. Inside, the new toys had wire frames that bent to either side. Teddy bears, rabbits and dogs were all dressed in soft felt costumes, and each model had a female version (in a dress) and a male version (in a suit). They lasted until 1971, when the world got tired of the twist. Then again, difficult times fell for British toy companies – a new era of technological progress began. Plush toys went out of fashion, parents preferred to buy constructors and mechanical toys for their children that were in keeping with the spirit of the times. If someone else bought teddy bears, then Chinese ones – synthetic, made of bright fabric.
When Trayton’s son Oliver came to work at Merrythought in 1972, it was not clear how to handle the family business in an age when classic mohair bears were no longer interested. The company could not reorganize itself and start sewing cheap, poor quality toys. When Oliver took over as CEO, he hired a new designer, couturier Jacqueline Revitt. They both looked askance: Oliver was an adventurer, he took to the skies in balloons and participated in crazy amateur rallies.Sometimes in the middle of the day he said to Jacqueline: “Why are you sitting in the room, go for a walk, maybe a good idea will come.” Jacqueline despised class differences and tried to befriend the girls who worked as craftswomen in the factory. Merrythought employees, accustomed to strictness and stiffness, considered the newcomers to be cranks. But soon Merrythought took part in the British Toy Fair and received the main prize for unique design, and immediately after that she received the Teddy Bear of the Year award – one of the most prestigious for toy manufacturers. It became clear that innovation is not so bad.
New sincerity
Until the 1980s, it was believed that teddy bears were a toy exclusively for children and an adult was ashamed to buy it for himself. But in the late 1980s, the famous actor Peter Bull admitted in an interview with American television that he loves teddy bears, and a new trend appeared in the States – fans began to send teddy bears to the actor, many took an example from him and bought them for themselves. Soon the trend reached Europe. In the UK, shops appeared that sold exclusively teddy bears, mostly vintage, which you could put on a shelf and admire. It was a real illness: orders poured into Merrythought, retailers demanded that they invent a special line that would not be available in other stores. Collectors followed the novelties and rushed to buy bear cubs from limited collections. Manufacturers, including Merrythought, began to create collectors’ clubs – members were given club cards and badges in the form of a “lucky” thymus for little money.Members of the clubs could order the rarest bears that were inaccessible to everyone else.
In 1995, Merrythought started the International Collectors Club, and in two years the number of members reached 1300 people. At the beginning of the 2000s, the future of the company looked cloudless, and few could have imagined that very soon it would close for a while.
Bears have become too popular, and cheap teddy bears from China are back on the shelves. Merrythough owner Oliver Holmes complained to the press about too high competition in the market and high taxes. This time, the oldest British manufactory that survived the war and the Great Depression, it seemed, came to an end.
Of course, among the buyers there were also lovers of high-quality teddy bears made from natural materials, but with the development of the Internet, private entrepreneurs began to sell their own toys – also mohair and high-quality, but much cheaper. Merrythought was behind the times and hardly used its website – apparently, the company lacked an experienced marketer who could explain the already middle-aged Oliver Holmes why new technologies are needed. There were many elderly people working on the staff – they spent so much time in the factory that the authorities did not dare to part with them. But the old people could no longer work properly – Jacqueline complained that the models she had invented were simplifying so that it would be easier for employees to sew them. “I don’t even always recognize my models when I see them on the shelves in stores,” she said indignantly. “They’ve become too simple, and collectors value originality in toys.” New employees were quickly fired – no one had repaired the factory for many years, everyone was forced to walk in an ugly brown uniform and turn to the boss, “Mr. Holmes.”Merrythought was stuck in the past and did not want to change, Oliver was no longer a rebel, the 21st century knocked him down. In 2006, he decided to close production.
When Merrythought announced in November 2006 that it was closing the factory and no longer making toys, fans began sending thousands of emails to the company’s website, posting postcards to owners, and attacking stores asking sellers if Britain’s teddy bears were over? “And then, as soon as Holmes announced that there would be no more famous bears, the demand for them jumped to unprecedented heights,” recalls Cathy Martin, editor of the specialized magazine Teddy Bear Scene.- Toys have been gathering dust on the shelves for several years, and then collectors began to buy them, thinking that this was their last chance. Prices on eBay have jumped – both for vintage collectible bears and new toys. And in December 2006, several large retailers secretly told me that in 2007 Merrythought will continue to make its trademark bears. ” After a while, the owner of the company, Oliver Holmes, spoke to the press himself: “After such support from fans and the media, we realized that it was too early to close. The stores ran out of traditional English bears – they were literally swept off the shelves. So we must sew new ones. After all, who else can brag about making handmade teddy bears? ”
