The Making of An “It” Bag: The Balenciaga Motorcycle Bag

It is the early 2000’s and Nicolas Ghesquière is at the helm of Balenciaga, a role he assumed in 1997, transforming the Paris-based brand into one of the most influential in the world. His tenure was marked by his penchant for impossibly slim silhouettes, for futurism and the Eighties, which he balanced with key silhouettes and themes put forth by Spanish master, Mr. Chistobal Balenciaga, himself, as well as for his striking command of proportion and cut.

In addition to garments, however, Ghesquière – in 2001 – put Balenciaga on the map with bold footwear and one “it” bag in particular: The Motorcycle Lariat bag, one that has proven a big-seller for the brand for ten-plus years. Speaking to WWD in August 2011, Ghesquière spoke of one of his most striking and long-standing contributions to the house, that bag. As WWD noted, “Back in 2000, Ghesquière introduced a much-demanded, logo-free handbag with braided handles and dangling zipper pulls, and the style is still seen in the streets all over the world, though overshadowed by more recent ‘it’ bags.

Interestingly, despite the cult status of Ghesquière’s moto bag, he told WWD that while the bag appeared in one of Balenciaga’s  2001 runway shows, the bag – beloved by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Kate Moss, Carine Roitfeld, Emmanuelle Alt, and everyone in-the-know fashion fan in between – almost never made it to retail.

Ghesquière told WWD, “We did this prototype and nobody cared; we had a couple of prototypes for a year. Every girl who was walking [the show], including Kate [Moss] came in and was like, ‘What is that? Is it vintage? Is it something that you found at the flea market?’ I was like ‘No, it’s a handbag that we prototyped but just didn’t produce.’ We didn’t produce it because I think when I showed the prototype to the people who asked me to do it, they weren’t happy with it.”

He further stated, “Accessories [at the time] were rigid. Luxury leather, especially, was about rigidity. So they were not really happy, and they decided not to produce it. Then when it was in the studio and the models noticed it, I said, ‘I think we should just do 25.

Let me just give them to the girls because at least some people will be happy.’ And that product started from a very, very fashion point of view [and extended] to a very, very large, global audience. 

As for why Ghesquière thinks the bag resonated so signficiantly, it appears to be why it was posed to fail initially. “There was no logo. Very light. Very effective,” he says. “There is something familiar with the vintage side. Women and girls thought it was something they’d always have. It was a new fresh thing, but it looked like an old, good, friendly thing. And I think the brand also was becoming desirable. People had desire for my goods and [the bag] was the most accessible piece. You could be a Balenciaga girl with that bag.”

Balenciaga Motorcycle Bag – The Handbag Concept

The Balenciaga handbag line has a long history. In 1915 the young Spanish designer Cristobal Balenciaga began designing fine fashions for some of the most notable women. Although Balenciaga had a few less successful years, the talent of designer Nicholas Ghesquire, who came on as creative director in the 1990’s, has made the company hugely successful once again.

Balenciaga motorcycle bags are simply stylish and beautiful. These bags are an addition that is suitable for all women. These bags are definitely different from other bags. One of the features that have contributed to the popularity of these bags is the type of leather the Balenciaga motorcycle bags are made from. These bags are made from soft, thin and light weight leather. However, the fact that the bags are made from thin, soft and light leather does not mean that these bags can easily tear and wear out easily. Alternatively, this type of leather makes the bags durable and unique in appearance.

Color is one area where Balenciaga handbags appear to have no boundaries. You’ll find just about every color under the rainbow, from teal to metallic orange. There are two seasons S/S and F/W. Each season has a pre-collection, and then a collection. S/S pre-collection colors are usually released December, and the collection is released in February. For F/W pre-collection, it is released June, and the rest in August. Black, White and Anthracite come every season.

But Motorcycle Bags could never existed in the first place. Ghesquiere tells that he made the prototype at the behest of company brass, and they dismissed it as too soft, too lightweight and too lacking in structure. As it turns out, all the things that they thought would make it unpopular are what make the design so beloved. People who have loved and adored Balenciaga bags over the years have one group of people to thank for it: Models. That’s right; if it weren’t for the models, there is no single Motorcycle bag.

Ghesquiere says that he convinced his corporate minders to allow him to produce the bags just for the runway show so that the girls would have something to carry while they walked, but the models (most notably Kate Moss) were so immediately smitten with the design that he knew he had a winning bag on his hands. When Kate Moss tells you that something is cool, it’s in the best interest of everyone who stands to profit to listen to her.

More than a decade later, with 100s of colors these bags became one of the most successful it-bags in history!

Should I buy the First or the City?

Although they are similar in design, they are both significantly different in size. The First holds a significantly smaller amount than the City, if you carry more than the essentials, it is recommended that you go with the City.

History of the bag: Balenciaga Classic City

Balenciaga is known for its bold designs, especially when it comes to handbags. Back in 2001, the Balenciaga Classic City bag was introduced as the “Motorcycle City bag”. The chief designer of Balenciaga at the time, Nicholas Ghesquière, created a few prototypes of the Classic City bag. However, the company management didn’t want to produce the bag Nicholas made, as it was “too light, too soft and lacked structure”. Nicholas convinced them to just make 25 prototypes to use on the runway as an extra and hand out for free to celebrities and it-girls. And, safe to say, the rest is history…

All the models, especially Kate Moss, were head over heels in love with this bag. Kate Moss was very influential at that time (and she still is). So, when Kate Moss says it’s cool, it will become an IT-bag. This is exactly what happened to the Classic City bag.

In an interview with WWD in August 2011, Nicholas Ghesquière answered the following when they asked why the popularity of the bag resonated this dramatically: “No logo, very light, very effective. There is something familiar with the vintage side. Women and girls thought it was something they’d always have. It was a new fresh thing, but it looking like an old, good, friendly thing. And I think the brand also was becoming desirable. People had desire for my goods and [the bag] was the most accessible piece. You could be a Balenciaga girl with that bag.” 

The design and styles of the bag

The Balenciaga bag is known for its feminine but edgy look, that seems to transcend time and trends. The bag puts a ‘fun twist’ on traditional girlish staples. Characterized by the long leather tassels, the matching cosmetic mirror (which was added in Spring/Summer 2002) and the optional shoulder strap, the Classic City bag of Balenciaga has a flair of casual with a touch of fancy.

This bag is made from processed lambskin, which feels very soft and is light weight. The leather can be a bit stiff in the beginning, but after a while it will become flexible and will create the typical casual vintage look. 

The bag comes in different sizes and styles, of which the “City” size is the most popular of all. Other sizes and styles are:

With the City being the most popular bag, limited editions and extraordinary types of the bag were produced through the years. Today, there are thee styles of Balenciaga Motorcycle City bags, being:

  • the “Balenciaga Classic City” in sizes mini, small and normal.
  • the “Balenciaga Giant 12 City”, which has bigger studs, but the same proportions as a Classic City. It has gold, palladium or rose gold plated hardware.
  • the “Balenciaga Giant 21 City”, on which everything is oversized, from the studs to the buckles, patches et cetera.  

Fun fact: The first bags were colored black and brown. But soon Balenciaga started to add more and more colors. Balenciaga is famous for their endless array of colors and print. They make about six new colors twice a year for their Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter collections.  

Now, nineteen years later, this bag is still modern and fashion forward. Balenciaga still sells the Motorcycle City bag and prices rise each year. Without a doubt, this Balenciaga bag is so iconic.

Ah, the Classic First bag from Balenciaga. It’s the most iconic bag, and it’s inspired similar models like the City and Mini City. The shape is unique to Balenciaga, with that classic dip of soft leather below the studded handles, and the pinched sides. The zippered outer compartment design, with long tassel pulls and metal hardware is also replicated in the City and Mini City, but this is the original motorcycle bag. It’s sexy, rebellious, and can stand up to all trials!

The Classic First is a handbag and a cross body, as it comes with an adjustable, removable shoulder strap. Perfect for swinging to your hip as you jump on the back of a motorcycle.

“A couturier must be an architect for design, a sculptor for shape, a painter for color, a musician for harmony, and a philosopher for temperance,” Cristóbal Balenciaga used to say. Balenciaga is a European luxury fashion house founded by Cristóbal Balenciaga, a Spanish designer regarded as one of the leading and most influential couturiers of the 20th century.

His designs were favored by the Spanish royal family and fashionable members of the aristocracy. His works have been compared to sculptures and architecture, and straddle the edge of current fashion and the future of women’s ready-to-wear and have led to the sack dress, the tunic and shift, and eventually to the mini skirts.

Meet the Designer

Cristóbal Balenciaga was born in the small fishing village of Getaria in the Basque region of Spain. He spent his elementary years apprenticing tailors and had his earliest lessons in craftsmanship while accompanying his mother, a seamstress. Later in his teens, the most prominent woman in his town, the Marquesa de Casa Torres, became his first client, sending him to Madrid for formal training. Keep in mind though Balenciaga was self-taught, never attending fashion school. In his time, tailoring and dressmaking were learned by practical experience, not by theory.

Cristóbal Balenciaga opened his first dressmaking establishment in San Sebastián before World War I, and a second in Madrid in the 1920s. They were both called Eisa, a shortened version of Eisaguirre, his mother’s maiden name. He was a tireless perfectionist who acquired an expert command of sewing techniques and spent his life refining the construction of his creations and introducing extraordinary innovations. His dedication to tailoring gave him a mastery untouched by any other couturier.

The Design Process

Balenciaga never sketched and always began with the cloth. He made frequent buying trips to Paris, purchasing clothes from legendary names of the time including Chanel, Vionnet, Lelong and Schiaparelli, and upon his return, he’d carefully take the garments apart so that he could examine the techniques of each. Legend has it that Chanel believed that Balenciaga could cut and sew better than anyone else working in Paris.

Cristóbal Balenciaga covered many of his most stunning creations with exquisitely embroidered motifs, the work of the finest craftsmen in Paris. Historic masters of embroidery such as Lesage, Mesrine and Rébé supplied the Balenciaga house. But it was the extraordinary volume that he created that’s become the hallmark to his legacy.

Several designers who worked for Balenciaga went on to open their own successful couture houses, notably Oscar de la Renta, but his most famous and noted protégé was Hubert de Givenchy.

When will it end?

It’s been hot since Spring 2001 as was revived thanks to the current Boho Chic trend, Kate Moss and Sienna Miller. I was browsing around trend sites and stumbled upon this very interesting article on Racked. It speaks about WWD (Women’s Wear Daily) magazine having an interview with Nicolas Ghesquiere (creative manager for Balenciaga). He explains why the iconic Motorcycle bags may have not been produced.
“Now’s WWD Accessory magazine includes an interview with the elusive and colorful Nicolas Ghesquiere, the creative director of Balenciaga. In it, he talks about the luxury fashion house’s take on accessories–especially the It-bag. Did you know that when Balenciaga first created the Lariat, it nearly didn’t get produced?
This is exactly what happened at the show:


N.G.: Yes. Every woman who was walking [the show], such as Kate [Moss] came in and was like,’What is that? Is it classic? Is it something which you found at the flea market?’ I was like’No, it is a handbag which we prototyped but just didn’t produce.’ We didn’t produce it because I think when I showed the prototype to the people who requested me to do it, they were not happy with it.
WWD: Too fashiony? Luxurious leather, particularly, was approximately rigidity. So they weren’t very happy, and they decided to not make it. Then when it had been from the studio and the models noticed it,” I said,’I think we should just do 25. Allow me to simply give them to the women because at least some folks will be pleased.’ And that merchandise began from a very, very fashion point of view [and prolonged ] to a very, very large, global audience.


WWD: Why do you believe it resonated so radically?
N.G.: No logo. Really mild. Very effective. There is something familiar with the classic side. Girls and girls thought it was something they’d always have. It was a new fresh thing, but it looked like an old, good, friendly item. And I think that the brand also was becoming desirable.
