The Wallet app experts studied Deloitte and Field Agent research on pre-school buying behavior and collected the most interesting facts and figures in one review, supplementing them with case studies from market leaders – IKEA, Walmart, HP, Staples and Crayola.

Trading networks are preparing in advance for the new academic season: they form the appropriate assortment and come up with promotions and special offers.

We share statistics on consumer behavior in the pre-school season, as well as successful back-to-school strategies for retailers that have helped them increase sales and attract new customers. The survey is based on research by Deloitte and Field Agent, in which more than 2,700 parents were interviewed.

In America it costs 519 dollars to get a student to school.

Costs are rising: last year fees cost parents $ 510.

One third of clients think school costs are hitting their budget. At the same time, half of the buyers plan to increase their costs this year.

Most popular items – clothing, school supplies and electronics

From year to year, buyers spend most of their budget on clothing and school supplies: stationery, backpacks, books, lunch boxes.

Shopping lists include clothes for 97% of shoppers, 98% for school supplies, 22% for computers, 20% for gadgets.

This year, the demand for computers is expected to decrease, while for other gadgets, on the contrary, will increase.Parents will spend 29% more on school electronics – smartphones, tablets and wearables – than last year.

Price is the determining factor

When choosing a store, parents first of all pay attention to prices – they are important for 88% of customers. Every third buyer tracks promotions, discounts and special offers. Every other parent will choose a retailer with a lower price.

For 4 out of 5 customers, the quality of goods and convenience in shopping are important: convenient location of the store, comfortable arrangement of goods on the shelves, free delivery of orders.

Shopping experience and brand reputation, on the other hand, do not concern parents – these characteristics affect the choice of only 38% of customers.

Late buyers spend more.

Buyers are most active at the end of July and in the first half of August.

However, customers who postponed purchases until the second half of August and the beginning of September spend more – their average check is twice as high.

More than half of buyers will be limited to 2-3 stores

Parents do not plan to arrange a shopping marathon: 65% of them will buy everything they need for school in 2-3 stores.

Only 6% of buyers buy goods in more than 5 stores, and 9% – in only one.

Online shopping gains popularity

56% of buyers plan to make purchases in offline stores, online – 29%, which is 7% higher compared to 2016. The remaining 15% of parents consider both options.

Clothes and school supplies are more often bought offline, and electronics and appliances – online.

Free delivery of goods is important for users of online stores.Customers who prefer traditional shopping choose stores with a convenient territorial location.

Customer confidence in online shopping is growing: shoppers are willing to share personal information in exchange for shopping convenience.

Customers make purchases from smartphones more often

More and more parents buy goods for school from their smartphones. This year there are 60% of them – 7% more than last year.

Parents also use smartphones at points of sale: they go to online stores and mobile applications of retailers, compare prices for goods, look for promotions and discounts, issue coupons, and place orders.

Laptops and computers are used for the same purposes by 42% of customers.

20% of parents “sit” in social networks of retailers: they are looking for special offers and study reviews of other buyers.

Parents are indifferent to high technologies. Only 15% of customers use voice assistants, chat bots, virtual and augmented reality during school shopping.

Parents take into account the wishes of their children

Parents listen to their children in 66% of purchases.

Most often, children choose their own clothes and gadgets, less often computers.

Parents are involved in charity

A third of buyers participate in retailers’ charity events and donate money and school supplies for children in need.

Retailers are actively preparing for the new school season: they are launching promotions and discounts for customers, and are also experimenting with advertising.

The Crayola creative goods brand invited the students to thank the teachers.Schoolchildren painted a postcard with crayons and wrote warm words on it, and then photographed it and uploaded it to the image gallery on the site. The company chose the best works and placed them on the packaging of its products on the eve of September 1. The winners received sets of crayons and other prizes.

Stationery maker Staples has made school fees simpler by launching a shopping list in a mobile app. The user created his own wishlist or photographed the list of required goods issued by the school. The system found products from the list in the Staples assortment and offered the client to arrange for convenient delivery to their home or to the nearest store.

The manufacturer of computers, printers and other equipment HP has launched an emotional advertisement dedicated to the start of the new school year. The company shot a touching video about the relationship between children and parents, in which it spoke about the first day of school for a sixth grader. Instead of aggressive advertising, HP showed in the video what role the brand’s products play in people’s daily lives.Advertising has been successful: in recent years, the demand for computers has been declining, but the company’s sales have grown by 7%.

Parents find it difficult to navigate the assortment of such large retail chains as Walmart . The retailer helped shoppers and instead of the obvious ad, told them on social media how to use the school supplies. Ideas for stylish outfits, recipes for healthy lunches, tips for choosing backpacks and desks have appeared in the network’s accounts. This approach increases customer loyalty: the brand does not just sell products, but tells how they will help customers in their daily lives.

Not only schoolchildren are preparing for the new academic year, but also students. When arranging dorm rooms, they buy furniture from IKEA . To attract a younger audience, the retailer launched an advertising campaign with influencers on social media. Superfruit bloggers Mitch and Scott have filmed a series of interactive video quizzes for Snapchat. In the video, questions for users related to home improvement were “sewn up”. After passing the quiz, potential customers got to the IKEA website – there they were waiting for a selection of products that fit the interior of their apartments.

90,000 17 ironic stories of people who did not want to wait for karma to overtake their offenders, and took revenge

Revenge, as you know, is a dish that is served cold. But when the retaliation strikes against people whose abusive behavior knows no boundaries, it takes on a special, “sweet” taste. Users of the social network Reddit shared how they put the insolent people in their place and got even with them for the wrongs.

Bright Side has collected several such stories in which justice has been done, and each guilty person has received what he deserves.

  • I worked as a manager’s assistant. In addition to work tasks such as communicating with clients and maintaining correspondence, my responsibilities included resolving personal issues for the boss. I stocked his fridge and buffet with snacks, booked work and personal travel, wrote reports for his side business, and bought gifts for his wife for Christmas, Valentine’s, and birthday. I once booked his wife a trip to the tropics and provided her email address to send a booking confirmation. She called me and started shouting into the phone that she had neither the time nor the energy to deal with unnecessary letters. At that time, she did not have a job, so I deeply doubt that she received many letters a day.
Soon I quit my job and about a year later I subscribed from her e-mail to mailings of all kinds of sites with sweepstakes (and there were at least 50 of them).Let him deal with spam now! © SylkoZakurra / Reddit
  • Many years ago, somewhere in 1998 or 1999, my husband and I moved to a new city. At that time, we had a landline telephone with caller ID, since cell phones were not yet so popular.
One day at about 2 am we were awakened by a call. With anxiety in my heart, fearing that something had happened to our loved ones, I picked up the phone. I was answered by an unknown woman who wanted to talk to a certain Jim. Saying that she had the wrong number, I hung up. The stranger called again, claiming that she was calling Jim’s number. I replied that perhaps this number once belonged to him, but now it is mine, and Jim is not around.
I was able to calm down and fall asleep only after about an hour, and spent the whole next day at work in a broken state. These calls definitely pissed me off, but it happens, so I soon forgot about the incident. However, the same thing happened a few nights later. And then one more time. Once again.
When the phone rang for the 4th time, I was no longer annoyed… I was furious! I couldn’t sleep that night, so I decided to spend the time with benefit. Since I had a stranger’s number, I called her to remind her that the number I’m calling from still doesn’t belong to Jim. I called first at 3:45 am and then at 4:30 am to remind again that she would not call Jim at 555-XXXX. I called both at 6:00 and at 7:00 before leaving for work. For a week, I called her every morning when my alarm went off at 5:45 and when I left for work at 7:00. I called even when I got up at night to go to the toilet, and I was happy when I woke her up: “Don’t forget that Jim no longer answers 555-XXXX!”
After a week, I stopped calling. And she did not call me again: apparently, my reminders worked. © RumBunBun / Reddit
  • A quick and easy little revenge. I was putting my grocery shopping in my car this morning and saw a lady take off disposable gloves and throw them on the ground. I politely asked her not to litter, but she just waved at me and got into her car. Then I lifted my gloves and put them under her wipers. The woman flew into a rage and began to scream, but I didn’t care: I got into the car and drove away. © waldo06 / Reddit
  • I noticed that someone connected to my Spotify account from their PlayStation4 under a German nickname, which was weird because I don’t have a PS4. I was unable to disconnect it from my account, so I solved this problem in my own way: I turned Attila in full at midnight German time. I think the villain was playing at the time because it took a few seconds before he tried to change the song and then unsuccessfully turn it off.Soon he disconnected from my account and I changed the password, but damn it, what a great feeling it was! © goldenjumper11 / Reddit
  • We bought a house a couple of months ago and the sellers insisted that we pay a few small fees. These costs are usually borne by the seller, but the amount was so small ($ 187) compared to the cost of the house that we agreed.
There was an old table in the hallway, and after renovation we wanted to throw it away. When a neighbor noticed that we had put him out on the street, he notified the former owners of this, as it was their favorite item in the house.
Soon they asked if we would mind if they took the table since we were going to get rid of it anyway. I replied in a curious voice that we recently found a buyer who agreed to buy it for … $ 187. Since the table originally belonged to them, I added that we would be happy to part with it for . .. $ 188. They wrote us a check and took the table a week later. © ParkShipPirate / Reddit
  • A few years ago, new tenants moved to a house next door.In general, they are quite nice people, but once we did not manage to avoid disagreements. The man traveled a lot, and his wife was afraid of almost everything: darkness, thunderstorms, and so on. Therefore, she left the floodlights over the garage on all night, even though they could not be seen from the house. But the light fell into our bedroom even through the closed curtains. We politely asked several times to turn them off at night, since they are not used for their intended purpose, but we always received a categorical refusal. I even suggested buying a timer that controls the turning on and off of the equipment, however the neighbors were adamant.
Then I just decided to loosen the fastening of the bulbs so that they would not light up. Since the lights from the spotlights were never visible from the neighbors’ house, it took about 5-6 months before they realized that the devices were not working and screwed the bulbs back in. I waited a couple of weeks, unscrewed them again and waited a few more months. Finally, a neighbor asked if I had any problems with street lighting. I replied that there were, and that from time to time I had to tighten them up, since they were weakly holding, writing off everything to vibration from passing cars. Then he complained about the same problem, and I said that I gave up this venture and stopped screwing them in. In the end, he did the same. We were pleased with the outcome of the situation, which was resolved peacefully. © up *** t / Reddit
  • This incident happened to me in the 1st year of the university. There were 3 other girls living with me in the hostel, and we had a common kitchen. I bought a brand new set of kitchen utensils for 8 people (plates, bowls, mugs, large spoons, teaspoons, forks, and butter knives) and let my roommates use them, provided they remember to clean up after themselves. All unanimously agreed to this simple condition.
But about 2 months later, our deal fell apart. Every time I walked into the kitchen to eat, a mountain of dirty dishes towered in front of me. Several times I asked to wash everything, but no one even bothered to rub or rinse the dishes. It was not just dirty, but with dried food debris, so they had to be left in hot water for several hours and only then wiped off.
In general, I soaked everything, wiped it off, dried it and took it to my parents without saying a word to anyone. And then I bought disposable dishes and hid them safely in my room. Refused to wash the dishes, which I generously shared with you and which I bought with my own money? Good. Then you will never see her again! © lesmax / Reddit
  • I don’t mind when roommates use my things, be it food or household chemicals. Each of us has found ourselves in such a situation at least once. All I ask is to refund what was used. Did you drink my milk? Kindly buy a new one. It’s simple.
Unfortunately, my neighbor did not understand this. Being much better off than me, she bought a new thing instead of the used one only when I reminded about it.
Once I decided to wash my clothes, but instead of detergent, I found only an empty box. I don’t buy fancy or expensive items and I don’t chase brands. My neighbor could buy the cheapest powder in the world and I wouldn’t care. I’m tired. I’m tired of repeating that you shouldn’t even touch my powder if she’s not going to buy a new one.
I decided to buy a new fabric powder and dye, mixed them and poured them into the old box. Dry dye looks like washing powder, so you can’t tell them apart at first glance. I took the new box to my room and waited.
A week later, I came back from work and saw clothes painted in a “mysterious” pink color, which my neighbor hung out on the street after washing. She demanded an explanation from me, and I said that I wanted to dye my clothes, so I was advised to mix the dye with the powder to make the shade lighter (which, of course, was a lie).
I don’t think she didn’t believe me, but at least she heard me. Since then, she almost stopped using my things, and when she does, she immediately buys a replacement. © nothemisme / Reddit
  • I was standing in line at the pharmacy when someone yelled at me. I pretended not to hear, but someone called me again – zero reaction on my part. In the end, the stranger could not resist, came up to me and pulled my hand. I recognized him as my abuser, who mocked me for more than 10 years at school, but did not get angry, but on the contrary, decided to play a trick on him and see what would come of it.
He: “Hello! I heard you went to [name of local university]. ”
Me: “Sorry, but I don’t know you. Have we met?”
He was confused. It was such a delightful sight that I could hardly restrain a smile!
He: “It’s me, [name], we went to the same school. Come on, you know me! ”
I, looking at him in surprise: “Sorry, but I really don’t know you. Did we go to the pool together? ”
He: “No, I don’t think so.”
Me: “Then I’m sorry, but I don’t know you. I think you better get in the back of the line. “
She picked up the phone and turned away from it. He looked lost and finally walked to the back of the line. I bought what I wanted, left the pharmacy, completely ignoring his presence, got into the car and drove away. I screamed with joy and because I almost lost it. Seeing him in such a state, realizing that he could no longer harm me, and show that he had not influenced my life in any way, was indescribable! © tryclosetomybest / Reddit
  • As a child, my brother and I made fun of each other harmlessly. It was fun for the most part, but annoying at times. There was a period when one of us jumped around the corner to scare the other with all his might. I am easy to scare, so I got tired of it quickly.
One night I was leaving the room and saw a shadow near the stairs. I stopped, remembering that I had a full glass of water on my bedside table, and decided to take it with me.
When my brother jumped at me laughing, I screamed loudly and threw water on him. I turned out to be a “victim” in this situation, and therefore, how could I know that he was waiting for me? My brother got pissed off thinking that I did it on purpose, but to this day he has not provided a single proof.© haunted-willow / Reddit
  • This story happened to my brother and sister in the winter around the late 80’s in Canada. My brother thought it would be fun to add a warming cold ointment with menthol and eucalyptus to his sister’s lip balm. She took it with her and shared it with her friends on the school bus. The girls arrived at school with swollen and numb lips and watery eyes. Sister, of course, was not in the mood for laughter.
It was in the 80s, so my brother loved to pour tons of varnish on his thick dark hair, which, when used, looked more like a fire extinguisher. The result was like a building that could withstand any hurricane. So my sister decided to pour hydrogen peroxide into his can, and from that day on, his brother’s hair began to turn orange. This continued for several weeks, and my sister repeatedly added peroxide to the varnish. This happened gradually, so no one knew anything at first, but once we noticed it, we could not see it. We kept our mouths shut until his hair finally grew back. Decades later, I found out that my mother even took him to the doctors in the hope of finding out what was going on.© WillowmereCottage / Reddit
  • More than a year ago, I went to study to be a chef. But my mother never approved of my choice: she always sarcastically spoke about my decision and said that it would be better if I became a nurse or a lawyer, criticizing all my dishes. When I was preparing a 3 course dinner for the family, everyone was happy except her. I once cooked a whole tray of my signature meatballs and served them at a party my mom threw for her colleagues. The guests were so carried away that they ate all of them.
Then I realized that I would have to trick her into praising my kitchen. I prepared one of her favorite dishes for her, decorated it like a pro, and put it in a disposable food container, and my boyfriend videotaped the cooking process. Then I called my mother and said that we were sitting in the same cafe, whose name I invented, which supposedly serves her favorite dish, and offered to bring her a portion. She, without thinking twice, agreed, and, as it turned out, she really liked it. When Mom finished eating, I asked her to share her honest opinion for a review of the cafe. For 10 minutes she praised the food, until I said that I cooked it.
She changed her voice, put the plug aside and announced that I was cheating on her. My boyfriend showed her the video we filmed. She tried to find information about the restaurant on the Internet, but to no avail. Then she began to point out the disadvantages of the dish: for example, there was so much sauce and it was so spicy that it burned my mouth. When asked why she didn’t say this right away, I didn’t receive an answer, so I asked if she was ready to admit that I was a good cook. She answered no and waited until we left for another room, she continued to eat. Then I repeated the question. She laughed and finally admitted that I was a good cook. © ThrowRA-Barber / Reddit
  • I got a job in a scientific organization in my last year at university and was the only student who worked on the project. I was given a large empty office with 6 exactly the same desks.
All went well until a few weeks later other students joined the work. Two took other tables, but the third liked mine.He was not at all embarrassed by my personal belongings: office supplies, posters, watches, telephone …
One day I came to work and saw this guy at my desk. He pushed all my belongings to the side so that he could sit comfortably in my place. I tried to point out that this was my table, but in response I heard that he would not stay here for long. That day I settled down at a different table. If I didn’t make it by a certain time, then history would repeat itself.
Unfortunately for this guy, I remembered that I have a black calculator alarm clock that tells the time. When you click on it, it says, for example: “It is now 9:05.” And the alarm clock is accompanied by a loud voice notification “BIP, BIP, BIP, now 9:05”, which is repeated for 30 seconds. I set the alarm clock to go off in the middle of the morning, put it in a drawer, locked it, put the key in my pocket and went home. By the way, the tables were very solid. They could not be disassembled or opened with another key.
When I returned to the office after 3 days, I sat down at my desk and immediately turned off the alarm before it could ring. That guy came up to me and asked to turn off the alarm, because he was locked in a drawer and scared him every day. Then I replied sarcastically: “Sorry, he just plays when other people sit in my place.” He never occupied my desk again. © valiantfreak / Reddit
  • Several years ago I worked as a cashier in a big famous clothing store. In accordance with company policy, every customer whose purchase exceeded $ 60 was required to present an ID.
One lady picked up a pile of clothes for $ 400. When I saw her holding out a card that clearly belonged to another person, I asked for ID. The client began to get nervous, as she did not have documents with her, and the card was issued to her husband. Then I asked for another card. The woman began to lose her temper and asked if her husband could confirm the necessary data over the phone, to which I replied in the negative. She screamed, threw all her clothes on the counter in a rage, showed an indecent gesture and ran out of the store. My colleagues immediately ran up to me and asked if everything was all right with me, to which I only asked to replace me for a while.
A few hours later, the lady returned with her husband and demanded that all her clothes be returned to her. And then the hour of reckoning came: the fact is that I left the counter not in order to calm down, but in order to hang all the clothes in their places and make them wrap a couple of circles around the store again. But first, she had to stand in line for a while. To the question “Where are my clothes?” I replied with delight that all the clothes are hanging in their places. Her reaction thrilled me, and watching her spend another 2 hours looking for anything she wanted to buy made my day even better. © sunnytut / Reddit
  • When my wife and I got married, we moved to an apartment in a house of 4 blocks: 2 upper and 2 lower. There was a shared washing machine and tumble dryer in the basement. It so happened that only our apartment had an internal staircase leading to the basement. The rest had to go down the outside.
One day the neighbors from above decided to watch an action movie at 3 am.Loud explosions, rock soundtrack, gunfire sounds and all that. I am a locksmith with over 10 years of experience in the construction industry, so I know how most residential buildings work. I went down to the basement, opened the electrical panel and turned off the electricity in their apartment. Then he counted to 30, turned it on again, went upstairs and fell asleep in silence while all their household and electrical appliances rebooted. It worked with a bang. © mezekaldon / Reddit
  • My former neighbors had a dog that barked nonstop from 19:00 to 5:00.Apparently, they worked at night and left the pet outside. The reaction to my knocks on the door was always the same: “The dogs are barking, what do you want?” Their house was behind mine, and only a wall separated us. Once I spent the whole night recording a dog barking. When they got back, put the pet inside and fell asleep, I plugged my phone into the docking station and turned on the stereo at full volume in front of their yard at 9am. At about noon, angry neighbors stood at my door and asked me to calm my dog.I replied that it was a recording of their dogs barking, since they forgot that dogs bark, and I just listened to music at the time permitted by law and was going to spend the whole day like that. After that, they began to drive the dog home. © Your_acceptable / Reddit
  • My boyfriend is a very friendly guy who happily helps everyone, including giving others our Wi-Fi password. Some of his cousins, who are unfamiliar with the rules of decency, take advantage of his kindness. They sit on the porch for hours playing an online MMORPG and never say hello.Previously, they could sit like this until 23:00. And since I pay for the internet, I don’t like it at all. So today, while they were playing, I restarted the modem and they lost the match.
