39 Awesome Ideas For Your Baby’s 1st Birthday Cakes

First birthdays are a big affair. From the venue to decoration and food, a lot goes into planning the event. But one of the biggest challenges is deciding on a cake. Should you go for a themed cake, customized cake, designer cake or just a simple cake of your baby’s favorite flavor? The ideas can be overwhelming!

That’s precisely why MomJunction has come up with a list of the best first birthday cake ideas. Choose the one you like the most.

First Birthday Cakes For Boys

It’s very common to choose a blue-colored cake for a baby boy. But you could customize your cake according to the birthday theme or pick a design based on your child’s favorite cartoon character or superhero. Here, we have some ideas:

1. Drums birthday cake: Little boys love drums! This simple one-tier cake with a zig-zag fondant around it is simply charming. Top it with up two mega-sized lollipops or fondant sticks and you have a perfect first birthday cake for your little man.

2. Blue ombre cake: Ombre cakes are cakes or ruffles that have a darker color at the bottom, which graduates to white as it moves to the top, thus resulting in a striking look. You can choose your child’s favorite color, and design the cake with those shades.

3. Chevron and mustache cake: This is a typical boys’ cake. This two tier cake can have the horizontal zig-zag on the first tier and vertical stripes on the top tier, with a bow in the center and mustache on the top.

4. Mickey Mouse cake: The good old Mickey Mouse is a safe bet for first birthdays. Go for this three-tiered cake with red fondant on the first tier and white on the second tier and top it with a black fondant and mouse ears over that.

5. Spiderman cake: Simple and easy to make! All you need is a one-tier cake with red spiderman shape on the top and black icing for the mask and spider web. If you want a perfect Spiderman cake, then go for a three-tier cake with a red base and the spider web, a blue second layer with black buildings made of fondant, and a squared third layer that looks like a skyscraper. A Spiderman topper, spinning the web, completes this masterpiece.

6. Angry Birds cake: The most famous theme for birthday parties is the Angry Birds. You can go for a single tiered cake with chocolate background and green fondant on top, along with the birds, slingshot, and pigs.

But what if you have to plan a birthday party for a girl? Well, we have that covered too.

First Birthday Cakes For Girls

Cake ideas for girls are aplenty. Birthday cakes for girls can come in the different shapes such as Barbie’s dress, Rapunzel and her hair, tiaras, shoes, and many more. Here are some such cake ideas for you:

7. Princess cake: It’s been a year since your princess has entered your life. This is the perfect opportunity to tell her how precious she is for you. Create the royal magic with a princess cake full of pink and purple fondant colors.

8. Babydoll cake: A doll is every girl’s best friend. A doll cake is elegant, charming and cute at the same time. Layers of cake are stacked and carved into a bell to form the doll’s swaying dress. They are then frosted and covered in fondant to complete the doll’s dress. A real keepsake doll is then inserted in the center to complete the look.

9. Minnie mouse cake: Who doesn’t love the adorable little talking mouse? Plan a Minnie Mouse clubhouse idea theme and a cake to go with it. A red or pink cake with black Minnie Mouse silhouettes and pink bows is a great option. The cake is simple and can be made-to-order at local bakeries as well.

10. Tiara cakes: Your little girl’s head might be a tad undeveloped to hold a tiara; instead you can have an edible tiara on her cake. Edible tiaras are made with gum paste, a material that hardens upon drying, giving your tiara a realistic look. Adding metallic silver to it makes it all the more real.

Isomalt can be used to add colorful gems and diamonds to adorn the tiara. Use the tiara as a topper for a cake, complete with flourishes or drapes to make your girl’s first birthday akin to a royal gala.

12. Healthy chocolate cake: No, this is not your regular chocolate cake. It’s a healthier version that has Greek yogurt, honey, strawberries, chocolate chips, and unsweetened cocoa powder. This can be the best way to introduce your one-year-old to healthy food habits.

13. Carrot, coconut and date cake: This recipe substitutes sugar with dates, honey, and grated coconut. You can go for medium sized round cake; your little one will enjoy the carrot flavor and sweetness of honey and dates.

14. Smash cake: Smash cakes are tiny or mid-size cakes made for babies. Your baby can just smash the cake with her hand or even dig her face into it if she wishes. Only natural ingredients such as maple syrup and bananas are used in this cake, with soft frosting such as whipped cream or buttercream on the top. This makes it easy for a baby to smash it with her little fingers so that you can make some sweet memories.

15. Cinnamon cake: Cinnamon gives this first birthday cake that irresistible flavor. You can make it a tad healthier by adding bananas and honey to get natural sweetness. Layer it up with apples or your baby’s favorite fruit.

You can have the base with a thin layer of blue and white on the top. The ship with ‘1’ on it can be the cake topper. Have your baby’s name written on the side walls of the cake along with a ship wheel fondant on it.

20. Block cakes: This will probably be one of the best first birthday cakes your baby can have. If your baby has a soft alphabet block toy, and he/she recognizes the shape of the letters, get them an alphabet block cake. Looking at it, your baby just might squeal in delight.

23. Baby-in-a-bathtub Cake: Most babies love their bath time and instantly connect with a bathtub cake. Add your baby’s favorite toys as edible toppers on the bathtub cake and watch them dive right into it with glee.

24. Carousel cakes: Another thing that reminds people of their childhood is a carousel. Colorful tents with toy horses moving around the center, sitting on the horses and feeling the wind through your hair, waving frantically to your parents – a carousel cake reminds you of that and much more. This cake is made of two cakes, one that forms the base and the other which forms the tent top. Dowels, which are used to support the top layer, are also the support for the edible horses, which adorn the carousel cake.

25. Gravity-defying cake: Gravity-defying or topsy-turvy cakes look like they are precariously positioned and about to topple over. However, they are made in line with the principles of physics and are built in a way that they balance out each other. A fun topsy-turvy cake idea for a first birthday would be a teapot cake.

26. Winter candy cake: If you have a winter born baby, then go for a cake with Christmas tree, candy cane, and snowflakes. It’s just right for the first birthday, and you can also introduce the festive season to your baby.

27. Number cake: Number cakes are always in demand. You can make fun and easy, numbercakes at home, on your own. 28. Berry surprise cake: The chocolate cake is topped with fresh berries. You can have one variety of berries (blueberry, raspberry, strawberry) in each circle on top of the cake. If possible, you can cut any non-juicy fruit in the shape of ‘1’ and place it in the center.

37. Caterpillar cake: If your baby loves the classic ‘Hungry Caterpillar’ story, then we think you should have a cake shaped like a caterpillar who ate everything till it could eat no more. To make the cake more appealing, place a big apple (half-bitten) fondant in front of the caterpillar, to show its insatiable hunger.

38. Safari theme cake: This is a simple two-tier round cake with a bunch of jungle animals on the first layer and a monkey holding ‘1’ on the second tier. Alternatively, you can just go for a single big slab of cake with edible animal toppers.

39. Reptiles cake: This can go well if you have a reptile-themed party. It’s going to be one wild birthday party. You can use bundt cakes for the reptile shape and fruit roll-ups for the tongue and Smarties or M&Ms for eyes.

Turning one is a special milestone and you want the perfect cake to celebrate. This Healthy First Birthday Cake is amazingly moist, full of flavour and sweetened only with fruit. It is gluten, dairy and nut-free making it the ideal choice for those with allergies.

Why Choose This Cake for Your Baby’s Special Day?

Most parents are careful to fill their little one’s tummies with nutrient-dense foods from the moment they start solid food.

The World Health Organisation recommends that children under the age of two consume NO ADDED SUGAR. For this reason, many parents avoid feeding their baby added sugars and when it comes to their baby’s first birthday they may feel uncomfortable serving a sugar-laden cake.

I’m not against sugar and believe it is important to find the right balance – where it doesn’t take over but covers our children’s wants. However, I also believe that you can’t miss what you don’t know about. A one-year-old baby generally doesn’t know any different and serving a cake, sweetened with only fruit, will make most birthday babies more than happy.

The sweetness in this cake comes from the banana and date puree. It is NOT a sugar-free cake, dates are a high sugar ingredient, however, it is lower in sugar than many other cakes and if you wish, you can reduce the number of dates you use.

First Birthday Cake Ingredients

This is what you need to make this healthy first birthday cake…

How to Make the Cake
  • Blitz the dates in a food processor until broken down and clumping together to form a paste. Add the bananas and continue to blend until combined.
  • MORE INFO – Ensure the dates are soft or they will not blend properly. If your dates are a little dry soak them in boiling water for a couple of minutes before blending.
  • Add the oil and eggs into a mixing bowl, along with the date and banana puree, and mix until combined.
  • MORE INFO – You may be wondering why there are so many eggs. Coconut flour does not have gluten in it and eggs are needed to keep the product together. Eggs also help the product rise and provide extra moisture.
  • Add the coconut flour and stir until combined
  • MORE INFO – Allow the coconut flour to sit in the liquid mixture for 10 mins. This is to allow the coconut flour to absorb the liquid. You should notice that the mixture thickens.
  • Pour mixture evenly into two greased 7″ pans
  • MORE INFO – I have tested the recipe in 7″ round pans (takes 50 mins) and 8″ round pans (takes 45 mins). I do not have any timings for other pan sizes. The mixture should be split into two tins or it will not bake properly. I used springform pans.

Top Tips for Making Coconut Whipped Cream

Making coconut whipped cream isn’t as simple as just opening cans of coconut milk/cream and whipping it up.  There are certain things you should do to ensure you achieve the perfect consistency.

  • Choose the right brand. Not all brands work well, make sure you buy full fat as reduced-fat won’t work. I recommend giving the can of milk a shake and if you don’t feel the liquid moving then this will probably work perfectly.
  • Chill the coconut milk/coconut cream in the refrigerator overnight. This is important to ensure the cream hardens if you skip this then it will be too soft and won’t whip properly.
  • Make ahead. You can make whipped coconut cream up to 4 hours before icing your cake, make sure to store it in the refrigerator and ice the cake just before serving.

Assembling the Cake
  • Cool: Allow the cake layers to cool and the chia jam to thicken in the fridge.
  • Layer: Place one cake layer on your cake stand or serving plate. Evenly cover with the chia jam and top with the second cake layer. Spread the coconut whipped cream frosting over the top and sides. Decorate as you wish.

Storage and Make-Ahead Instructions

If you wish to make this cake in advance you can make the cake layers ahead of time but you should not assemble until the day of the party. The coconut whipped cream should be added at the last minute.

  • CAKE LAYERS: You can make ahead and freeze the cake layers for up to a month. Let it thaw overnight in the refrigerator. Alternatively, you can make the cake layers up to two days in advance and store, covered, in the refrigerator. Normally I do not recommend storing cakes in the refrigerator but this is a moist cake and stores best refrigerated.
  • CHIA JAM: You can make the chia jam 2-3 days in advance and store in the refrigerator.
  • COCONUT WHIPPED CREAM FROSTING: Can be whipped and stored in the refrigerator up to four hours before “icing” the cake.

Does it Make a Good Smash Cake?

Smash cake photos are the cutest and this is a great cake to use. I have been sent so many adorable photos of readers’ babies captured with this first birthday cake. Some have added food colouring to the frosting, to match a theme, and others have left it white.

The cake is moist and easy for baby to grab handfuls of it and you are sure to capture the delight on their faces when they take their first bite!

Make sure to snap the photos quickly before they manage to devour the whole cake!  😉

What Others Are Saying…
  • “I’m making this cake AGAIN for my son’s second birthday. I just don’t think he needs all the processed sugar so this cake will probably work for me as long as possible! It’s delicious! Thank u”
  • “The smash birthday cake was the show stopper of the party! Everybody liked it! Adults too! Superb”
  • “Our one year old couldn’t believe her luck. Piece in both hands and more allowed the next day for breakfast! all the adults raved and licked their lips as well. Thank you”

  • Blitz the dates in a food processor until broken down and clumping together to form a paste. Add the bananas and continue to blend until combined.

  • Meanwhile, pre-heat oven to 170C / 340F and lightly grease two 7 inch pans with some coconut oil

  • Transfer the banana date mixture to a large mixing bowl together with the eggs and oil. Carefully mix until combined. In a separate bowl mix together the coconut flour, baking powder and cinnamon. Add to the wet ingredient and stir through. Wait for 10 mins to allow the coconut flour to expand.

  • Add the raspberries and gently stir through before pouring the mixture equally into the prepared cake pans.

  • Bake for approx. 45-50 mins or until the cakes are baked through. To test for doneness, insert a toothpick into the centre of the cake. If it comes out clean, it is done. Allow cakes to cool for 10 minutes before removing from the tin. Place on a wire rack and allow the cakes to completely cool before assembling and frosting.

Chia Jam
  • Add all the ingredients to a blender, or food processor, and blitz until combined. Transfer to a container and allow to set in the fridge for an hour. (If you want something sweeter you can add some maple syrup or sweetener of choice)

Coconut Whipped Cream Frosting
  • Scoop out the thick coconut cream from the top of the coconut milk cans. Add to a large mixing bowl, along with the vanilla.

  • Wisk until it resembles whipped cream. Store in the refrigerator until you are ready to assemble the cake.

Recipe Notes

STEP BY STEP IMAGES: Please see recipe post for step by step pictures for reference.  DATES: Medjool dates are generally soft and will blend well. If your dates are dried then soak the dates in hot water for a couple of minutes before blending.  COCONUT MILK: Whipped coconut cream doesn’t work well with all brands of coconut milk. Make sure it has a high fat content. If you shake the tin of coconut milk and if you don’t feel the liquid moving then this will work perfectly. Banana Baby Birthday Smash Cake – Sugary & Buttery

It feels like it was just yesterday that our sweet baby girl was born and it is so hard to believe it’s actually been a whole year! She turned one last month and we celebrated, of course, with cake. It was beyond debate that I would make her the prettiest little baby smash cake so she could dig in with her tiny chubby hands! And it needed to be healthy. So I made some minor changes to one of my favorite banana cake recipes (here with coconut and honey cream cheese frosting). It is made with whole wheat flour (or oat flour), bananas, apple sauce, canola oil and spices. Despite the sugar, all ingredients in this cake are super healthy and baby friendly. She loved it, and so did the rest of the family who ate the leftovers!

It is so crazy how time flies especially when you have kids. People always tell you “They grow so fast” but you have no idea what those words really mean until you experience it yourself. Babies do seriously grow faster than you can turn your head! I did though finally come to the realization that our daughter is now entering toddlerhood. We said good bye to bottles, baby purees, onesies, baby carriers and, hopefully soon, nursing and welcomed first steps, homemade finger foods, more sleep and finally some little toothies. Kids are truly one of the most amazing things life has to offer. Seeing their little bodies grow and personalities develop tops everything and despite the lack of sleep, freedom and money, parenthood truly is the greatest gift of all!

Planning a Cake Smash Photoshoot? Checkout these Essential Tips (2021)

To someone entirely unfamiliar with the concept, the idea of a cake smash photography may seem weird, to say the least. After all, why would you order a beautiful cake, dress up a 12-month old…and then take numerous photos of the child destroying the sweet delicacy, getting all messy?

However, the fact is solid: cake smashes are getting increasingly popular, bringing families together in a unique, fun and memorable way.

Today we have prepared a practical and a comprehensive guide with these essential cake smash photography tips for making the most of your baby’s cake smash! From ordering the best cake for the shoot to the cake smash outfit and props to managing your baby’s behavior during the shoot, we’ve covered it all so your baby can smash it.

So when should you do a cake smash photoshoot?

Typically, the cake smash photography session is done around the baby’s first Birthday, and the photos are then used to adorn party invitations or let family and friends know about important developmental milestones (not to mention the hilariously embarrassing opportunities for when the kid grows up).

Before that age, there wouldn’t be much use in offering the little one cake, as they wouldn’t necessarily show any interest. On the contrary, at 12 months, a sudden rush of sweetness is often the first time the child can consume as much cake as they want, or better still – do whatever they want with it. From face painting into it to throwing the bits and pieces around like there’s no tomorrow, the possibilities are endless!

Why do a cake smash for the 1st birthday?

First birthdays are as much a celebration of the parents as the baby. One year of dirty diapers and late nights survived. One year of all the stress and the love, the giggles and the tears… survived. Oftentimes, it surely feels as though the year will never end… and other times as though the year is passing all too quickly. Before long, this same small baby will be all grown up, preparing for life as an adult. Their time as a baby is all too limited.

A cake smash is the perfect commemoration of all that has happened during this year. Many people will have their photoshoot in the weeks before the birthday party, using the resulting images for darling invitation pictures.

Cake smash photoshoots can be as simple or as elaborate as you would like.

If you want a low-stress, low-maintenance cake smash, just choose two or three complementing colors for a theme (when in doubt, turn to your color wheel. Colors across from each other tend to compliment very well.). Dress the little birthday boy or girl in one of these colors, find a cake in complementing colors, and smash away! (Don’t forget the protective plastic or other easily-cleaned surfaces, for your own sanity!) Some cake smash photography studios in Singapore provide the outfits and/or the cake – definitely consider contacting a studio if the lack of stress would make it worth the price.

If you are looking for something more elaborate – go full out. Hire a professional photographer. Order a multi-layered cake in all its oozy goodness. Purchase an all-new outfit (or five) for your little darling – after all, they only have a first birthday once. Choose a theme, whether it be your favorite sports team, a Disney princess, or whatever else you desire. Enjoy it!

Why wait till the 1st birthday for a cake smash photoshoot?

The cake smash may well be your little one’s first introduction to the oozy goodness of cake (even if you decide to go non-sugar and non-dairy for health reasons). Any younger and the babe might not care for it (think of Christmas presents, for example. How often has a baby enjoyed the box more than the gift?). The first birthday seems to be the perfect cut-off age for a cake smash

A mostly-unconsidered advantage of a cake smash photography session for a first birthday (particularly in a studio) is the bathing facilities. Every little one-year-old needs a bath, but this way you can have fun bathing her, knowing that the cake smash mess will be fully cleaned… by someone else, for once.

We 100% recommend a cake smash photography session for your little one’s first birthday.

Picking a theme for your photoshoot

  • A theme doesn’t necessarily mean sticking to characters, eras or anything like that: sometimes you may choose to simply pick a few colors that go well together and go from there!
  • Sometimes, the surroundings themselves make for a great theme, offering stunning backdrops. For instance, an outdoor shoot calls for all things natural and bright, such as flowers, animals and so on.
  • Of course, when it comes to character or animal themes, you have plenty of exciting options limited only by your imagination! Some of the most popular themes for girls include Unicorn, Mermaid, Princess, or Disney characters. Boys generally like being sent into space, playing with cars, as well as being surrounded by famous superheroes. And remember – there are no truly “boy” or “girl” themes – just pick something your little one is most excited about to put a smile on their little face.

According to a cake smash photography expert, Steph Donaher, some of the best color combinations to consider for themes include:

  • Pink/Yellow/Blue/White
  • Gold/Red/Black
  • Navy/Silver
  • Navy/Pink
  • Navy/Turquoise/Blue
  • Purple/Orange/Turquoise
  • Grey/Orange/Blue
  • Black/Gold
  • Navy/Gold
  • Black/Pink/Gold

Which cake would be ideal for the shoot? Here are some tips

  • There are pretty much only two colors to avoid when it comes to picking the cake: first, many shades of brown look like poo, so chocolate sponge and cream aren’t the best choices. In addition, red looks a bit creepy resembling blood, so avoid it as well – unless you’re going for Halloween vibes.
  • Ultimately, if all else fails, resort to a white cake with colorful sprinkles as it’s the safest bet, albeit not the most creative.
  • Remember: the cake is there to be destroyed! Don’t go overboard with expensive creations – some experienced photographers say that store-bought sponge decorated at home with bright toppings works best.
  • Speaking of decorations, avoid using fondant since it’s hard for the kids to deal with! As a result, your child will either lose interest or make much less mess than intended. Instead, use brightly colored buttercream, or even whipped heavy cream, with sprinkles and other edible bits on top.
  • Another tip is to leave the cake out of the fridge for about 15-30 mins, so the icing softens. Don’t leave it out for too long though – food poisoning isn’t fun.

But remember … Safety first!

Always consider potential allergens to avoid dangerous adverse reactions. Some babies are allergic to one or more common cake ingredients, such as wheat, eggs, and nuts. In addition, suddenly consuming too much sugar can send a baby into an anxious sugar rush – so all things considered, pick a recipe wisely.

Cake Smash Outfit for Boys

Once you have decided on a cake smash photoshoot, there are still many factors to be considered. Indoors photoshoot or outdoors? White cake, blue cake, green cake? Professionally-decorated cake or DIY?
Let us start off at the very beginning – the baby’s outfit.

Here are several cake smash outfit ideas for boys.

  • Pick an outfit that can be stained. The last thing you want to do is dress your little man in a family heirloom and then have it ruined after a single photograph. Consider purchasing something completely new, or even second-hand so as not to ruin any of his existing clothing.
  • Find something cute but inexpensive. Once again, it could very well be stained during the cake smash. You want to find something that won’t look frumpy in the pictures but also will not put you into debt! (Amazon, Etsy, or Ebay tend to be good options.)
  • Choose colors that complement or match the colors of the cake. It’s time to go back to elementary art class – look at the color wheel. If your cake will be purple, consider a yellow, orange, or light blue outfit. If the cake or props will be pink, go for a light green or sky-blue outfit.
  • Photographers recommend ruffles, tulle, ribbon or lace.
  • Avoid dark colors or bright white; they do not show up well on camera.
  • Some options specifically for boys – a diaper cover, suspenders, a bow tie, and/or a cute hat is absolutely adorable.

Enjoy the process! These pictures with your little cowboy – or Buzz Lightyear, or perhaps football quarterback – will be a beautiful memory long after his attention is turned to more grown-up things.

Cake Smash Outfits for Girls

Cake smash shoots can be an absolute joy. This is the perfect time to celebrate your sweet little one’s first, event-filled year of life – and your survival.

First, the most crucial step – the outfit. Here are some guidelines for choosing an outfit for your little princess’s cake smash.

  • Once again, choose an outfit that will not stain easily – or at least one that you will not mind discarding later. Certain icing colors stain clothing easily.
  • Find something cute but inexpensive. The definition of cute is up to you! Traditionally, little-girl photoshoots involve pink frills and princess costumes, but it’s up to you! Maybe you want your baby girl in a jersey and tiny little cleats. The emphasis being on inexpensive – after all, you have many more birthdays to celebrate with this little one.
  • Photographers recommend accessories like headbands, necklaces, and cute shoes for some fun detail in your picture.
  • Sandals are adorable! Consider sandals.
  • Don’t hesitate to dress her up in a diaper. It’s the ultimate, low-budget form of clothing, quickly switched out for another. After all, you are already changing her diaper several times a day!

Whatever you do, enjoy the process. It is easy to get caught up in all the details of the photoshoot, from researching the photographer to purchasing the cake (or DIY-ing it), from the location to the theme. Don’t forget to take a deep breath and enjoy the process. These pictures will be a memory for years to come.

Indoor vs. Outdoor Cake Smash Photoshoot

  • The little girl’s birthday girl was smeared into a cake. The first cake. The use of the first cake. Smash cake
  • Baby girl celebrating her first bithday with gourmet cake and balloons.

A cake smash session is most definitely a beautiful mess. With cake and icing everywhere, props and even the walls can be covered. Some recommend outdoor photoshoots for an extra dash of playfulness and – you guessed it – a much easier cleanup process. However, both indoor and outdoor cake smash photoshoots have their advantages and disadvantages.

  • One pro of outdoor cake smash shoots is the ease of cleanup, whether it be via a hose, wet wipes, paper towels or something else. Even better if the venue you choose for your photos has a kiddie pool – even the cleanup can be fun!
  • Outdoor cake smash photography can be more playful and fun.
  • A third pro – minimal props! With all the beauty of the outdoors, props are mostly unnecessary.

  • The weather and sunshine limit the schedule. Photos are best taken before 11 a.m. or after 6 p.m. to avoid the heat in the summer and dehydration and to ensure the overall health of all those involved in the photoshoot.
  • Lighting! Bad weather can affect the brightness and thus the quality of your picture.

  • You control what distracts your baby. With an outdoor shoot, depending on your surroundings, the baby may be distracted by a stray bird or the breeze. Indoors, you can choose the setting to avoid distractions.
  • Familiarity with the surroundings may be another point in favor of the indoor cake smash. If you choose to do the shoot in your home, you will be very familiar with your surroundings, including the places that will have the best lighting, fewest distractions, and where the baby is happiest.
  • Indoor cake smash photography sessions in Singaporean studios often include the bathing facilities, as opposed to an outdoor shot in which you will have to clean up your baby with minimal resources.

  • Cleanup may be inconvenient. Icing can stain surfaces and get into crevices in the most uncanny of ways.

Indoor shoot or outdoor shoot? In the end, it is your decision. Most professional photographers are willing and able to work with either setting to present you with the highest quality pictures available.

Both indoor and outdoor cake smash photography shoots have their pros and their cons. The best choice will depend on your situation, your baby on any given day, and your preferences!

Getting ready for the cake smash photography shoot

There are quite a few things to keep in mind to ensure the cake smash photography shoot goes as effortlessly as possible. Here are some tips for your checklist:

  • Things will absolutely get messy, so be ready to clean up afterwards (unless you’re hiring a complete package that includes cleaning)! Pack wisely and have plenty of wet wipes, napkins and towels handy on the day of your shoot.
  • Don’t want to ruin the floor? Scout the local handyman store for some cheap cut-outs, being that a piece of soft rug or some odd lino. Pick something you can dispose afterwards, or if you’re keen – role up and blast from a garden hose.
  • Alternatively, use some bedsheets as surface protectors/backdrops.
  • Avoid going overboard with the decorations! It’s tempting to fill up the space with toys, props and balloons, but this can be very distracting. First, you want your baby to be the focus of the photos. But also, what if instead of smashing a cake your child will suddenly decide to play with something else, leaving you waiting for hours before you can even get started? Play it safe and don’t overload the location.
  • Remember that your child’s clothing may be completely ruined, so don’t necessarily put them in the fanciest possible outfit. Besides, cake smudges often look best on plain clothing.
  • Unless you really want to, it’s generally not the best look to have your child in obvious disposable nappies. If you must use them, get a nappy cover to put on top for a better look.

How to manage the baby’s behavior during the cake smash photoshoot

  • Remember that the little one has no idea that you expect them to smash the cake – so don’t be alarmed or surprised if they don’t dig in straight away! Add the unfamiliar surroundings and a weird bunch of suspiciously happy adults, and you have a recipe for a tantrum. To partially avoid these issues, it’s sometimes recommended to practice the session at home – with a cupcake, for example. Extra bonus points if you decorate it in a manner similar to the planned cake! In addition, trying out a small treat first helps catch any allergies you may not have been aware of, so it can also be a safety tip.
  • Give gentle encouragement if required! Some babies are quite cautious about ruining things, so you might have to explicitly let them know it’s ok to ruin the icing and play with the cake. And once they’ve started, they’ll probably be unstoppable!
  • To put the little one’s mind at ease, try distracting them by getting them to show you a skill! When in the right mood, most toddlers are happy to be little crowd pleasers, whether it’s by striking a pose, singing a song or blowing a kiss. Cute!
  • Your best bet at avoiding tears and tantrums is keeping the session short and sweet. Getting the little one’s attention for anything over 40 minutes can be problematic, so plan for this timeframe and go from there (as miracles do happen, especially when cake is involved). Aim to get the main shots within the first 20 minutes for the ultimate peace of mind.
  • Prepare for the worst. Kids are unpredictable, and sometimes you just can’t get them onboard. Be mentally prepared to reschedule the cake smash photography shoot if this happens, and don’t get mad at the little one. Remember: they have no idea what’s going on, so your negative emotions will only add to the confusion, decreases the chances for a successful second attempt in the near future.

And finally ….Tips for hiring a professional photographer

It’s totally possible to DIY a cake smash photography shoot – however, hiring a professional photographer ensures the best possible results (and an extra pair of helping hands…and fancy equipment…lots of stuff, really).

The following tips will help you pick the best photographer for your upcoming cake smash photoshoot:

  • Do your research – and then do it again. Before approaching a few shortlisted photographers for quotes and consultations, you need to form a clear idea if what your budget is, and what quality/inclusions/extras you’re likely to get for it. From reviewing their website and social media to diving into the comments under their posts, you want to find extensive evidence of great personal skills and awesome work quality.
  • Don’t be cheap. It can be tempting to hire someone who offers low prices – but chances are this person is a hobbyist at best. If the money is tight, you might be better off going the DIY route or waiting another year to take the photos.
  • Don’t be shy and ask about relevant experience. Someone might be a brilliant landscape photographer, but they aren’t necessarily great at taming screaming, cake-stained toddlers! Training, experience or a combination of both all matter when picking a photographer.
  • Is an assistant available for the shoot? Although not necessary (and likely to increase the price), an assistant does help provide additional support for the child, as well as streamlining the process by providing an extra pair of hands.
  • What are the photoshoot arrangements, e.g. is there a studio for you to come into, do they have props available, what kind of equipment they have, will the baby be comfortable in the proposed setting, and so on.
  • What are the cancellation and rescheduling policy? As mentioned above, babies are largely unpredictable – so you need to know what happens in case of a sudden cancellation. Will you lose your bond – or even an entire session fee? Are there fees for rescheduling? Ask everything and make notes to avoid unpleasant surprises.
  • Are there extra charges to include more people (i.e. parents or siblings)? Is it possible to combine 2 shoots in a single time slot, in case another cake-smashing toddler wants to join in the fun?
  • After the photos are released, what are the usage right and permissions? Can you share raw/unedited photos on social media whilst waiting on the edits, and if so, what are the conditions?

A cake smash session can be best described as a beautiful mess! Plan everything according to the tips above, but don’t forget to breathe, relax, and fully embrace the fun and chaotic nature of the shoot. Watch your little one destroying the cake and imagine all the precious memories to come – many moments to cherish and remember!

90,000 Recipe: Children’s First Birthday Cake

carrots – 2-3 pcs.;
bananas – 4 pcs.;
butter – 70 g;
semolina – 150 g;
sugar – 4 tsp;
soft homemade cottage cheese – 700 g

I propose a simple cake recipe for the first birthday. Cake for 1 year old baby. A real cake that a child can eat, and not just take pictures next to him 🙂 Search engines on the Internet for the request “cake for the first birthday” give out a bunch of colorful pictures with cakes made of mastic – booties, bottles and other molded beauty. All this is beautiful, photogenic 🙂 but, unfortunately, inedible for a baby 🙂 Food colors, mastic, chocolate and a lot of sugar – all these products are not for a one-year-old child. Even on his birthday 🙂

So I decided to make a cake from those products that can be used by a child at one year old. These products must be familiar to the baby so as not to face allergies on his birthday. And they should be as simple as possible, no exotic.

And let this cake be simple to taste, believe me – for a one-year-old baby who is not spoiled by bright food tastes, this is what you need.

We will make our improvised cake based on the curd casserole principle.
For this we need the freshest homemade cottage cheese.

Part of the curd needs to be transferred directly to the blender glass, we will need it to make the cream.

Add sugar to the curd. Two teaspoons, no more. One-year-old babies don’t need a lot of sugar.

Pre-sift the semolina into a separate container.

Stir semolina with cottage cheese and sugar.

Add a small amount of finely chopped carrots.

Grease the baking dish with butter.

Put the curd mass into it and level the surface.

Put in a preheated oven, bake at 180 degrees.

After 15-20 minutes, take out the casserole and grease with a piece of butter.

We send to the oven for another 10 minutes. The casserole is ready.

It needs to be completely cooled. I made a casserole in the evening. From the cooled base, you need to cut a round cake and cut it lengthwise into two parts with a large knife.

For the fruit layer we need bananas – as fresh as possible, without dark spots.

Cut the bananas into thin slices and put them on the bottom cake.

Cover with the second cake on top.

Second option. You can cut the number “1” out of the casserole for your first birthday.

A small child is not allowed any fatty oil or protein, as well as chocolate creams. Therefore, we will make curd cream, and to make it beautiful and bright, we will tint it with carrots.
For the cream, boil the carrots until soft. I used the microwave and cooked frozen carrots in it.

Add two teaspoons of sugar to the curd that we set aside in advance.

Beat in a blender at maximum speed or in turbo mode to obtain an absolutely smooth paste.

We turn the cooled carrots into puree separately from the curd so that there are no lumps left.

Add the carrot puree to the curd.

Whisk everything together and get the most delicate cream of a charming peach color.

Completely cover our cake with cream.

To decorate the cake, you can use any curly molds that you have.

We will also make decorations from carrots. To do this, you need to choose a large carrot and hold it for 3-4 minutes for a couple.

Cut out figures from carrots.

I entrusted the decoration of the second cake to the older children.

This is the cake they prepared for their little sister’s first birthday.

In such a simple way, on the basis of an ordinary curd casserole, you can make a real birthday cake for a one-year-old baby for the first birthday!

A baby can eat such a curd cake with carrot cream without harm to health, all products are hypoallergenic and familiar to the child’s body.

I hope that someone will find this simple recipe for an inexpensive and healthy cake for the first birthday useful 🙂

Thank you for your attention 🙂

Is this a good recipe?

DIY cake for a boy for 1 year: recipe

Recipe number 1
Baby’s first cake recipe for 1 year: baby biscuits
The recipe is very simple. As a test – any baby biscuits (400 gr).

Instead of cream – cottage cheese (250 gr.), Whipped with sour cream (150 gr.) And sugar (0.5 cups).
We spread the cookies soaked in milk on a dish in one layer, coat with cottage cheese on top.

And so several layers. Fruits such as bananas can be added between layers and for decoration.
Decorate the top of the cake with cookie crumbs, finely chopped apples and candied fruits.

If you wish, we can put a candle. This cake is suitable for both a girl and a boy for 1 year.

Recipe number 2

AGE: 1 year

  • banana – 150 g
  • eggs – 2 pieces
  • butter – 100 g
  • sugar – 150 g
  • flour – 350 g
  • soda – 1 tsp
  • citric acid – 1 tsp

To make a cake for 1 year old child, peel the banana, cut into pieces and use a blender to make puree.

Beat eggs.

Mix sugar and softened butter with a fork.

Then beat with a blender for a couple of minutes.

Add eggs, beat for a couple of minutes.

Add banana puree, flour, baking soda and citric acid.

Stir well.

Place foil in a container for a double boiler (or grease a baking dish in the oven). Divide the dough into two parts and put half of the dough into the mold.

Bake the cake layers in the oven or cook in a double boiler for 45 minutes.

Ready-made birthday cake can be garnished with banana and cream.

And you can cut a bear’s head from the cake, and make a nose from the remaining pieces. Sprinkle the resulting bear with powdered sugar and make eyes from the halves of a walnut. It will turn out to be such a beautiful cake for 1 year old child

Recipe number 3 (ripped off the baby this girl has)

So, we need:

1) for cake layers

200 g brown sugar

200 g butter or margarine

5 eggs

50 ml milk

250 g flour

1 h.l. slaked soda

2) for cream

400 g baby curd, preferably with a fruit addition, e.g. blueberry

300 g cream 33% fat

200 g sour cream 20%

100 g sugar or powdered sugar

10 g gelatin (1 sachet)

3) for decoration

300 g fresh berries

half a pack of baby biscuits (I have a Heinz)

half a meter wide satin ribbon

candle – optional 🙂

Grind butter with sugar, add eggs, milk, mix everything.Sift flour, add it to the resulting mixture and knead the dough. It shouldn’t be very cool. Cover a small detachable baking dish with baking paper, pour half of the dough into it, flatten. Put in an oven preheated to 180 degrees, bake for 30 minutes. And so – 2 times.

While the cakes are baking, whisk the sour cream with 200 g of curd and 50 g of sugar (or powdered sugar). If you decide to take the curd without additives, the amount of sugar, for my taste, is better to slightly increase.Add some berries to the resulting cream, which are best cut in half or four times – depending on which berries you take. This will be a cream for sandwiching the cakes.

Stir gelatin in 100 ml of cream, leave for 10 minutes, then heat them a little on the stove, just do not boil. Wait for the mixture to cool down to room temperature. After that, beat the remaining 200 g of curd and all the cream with 50 g of sugar, this mixture will cover the cake on top.

Putting the cake right in the mold.Put the cream with sour cream on the bottom cake, level it, cover with the second cake and pour the cream with gelatin, level it again. Make sure that the height of the collected cake is slightly lower than the cookie, you need to leave a little space for the berries. After that, we send the cake to the refrigerator for several hours, or better overnight. When the top layer of cream hardens, carefully remove the cake from the mold (go around the edges with a sharp knife). Now is the time to decorate the cake with cookies, for this you will need someone’s help to hold the cookies already installed on the sides with the ribbon.Tie a bow, set a candle, decorate the top with berries.

Our birthday boy was so carried away by berries that he did not even touch the burning candle and did not destroy the cookie fence. After all the ceremonial procedures, the cake passed to the adults on the table and was eaten with gusto. Well, of course, I would not offer it to the guests after all this, but if you want to treat someone – you can not give this cake to the child to be torn apart, but cut off one piece. In this case, it is better to pour the berries onto the cake, while the top layer of the cream has not completely turned into a soufflé, so that when the berries are cut, they do not crumble in different directions.

Recipe number 4
Cake for children from 6 months old, soft, sweet (but without sugar), banana. Tested in practice – children really like it.

– Take 2 tsp, pour the oil out into the mass and mix
– Form for a cake (diam approx 15 cm) I cover a vase inside with cling film
– Divide the mass into 2 parts and put one part in a mold, align and set in the refrigerator to freeze.
– Pour 4 packs of Agusha milk into a croutons and bring to a boil, pour kefir there, make medium heat and cook for 10-15 minutes, whey should peel off, then pour the mass into cheesecloth folded in 4 layers on a colander, and while stirring, wait until all the whey is gone …After about 15-20 minutes, you will get a soft, tender cooled curd.
– Crush the banana with a fork
– Mix banana with cottage cheese
– We take out the form from the refrigerator and put the cottage cheese with banana there
– On top of the second part of the mass of cookies. Cover with foil and put in the refrigerator. After an hour or 2 we take out, turn over the form, remove the foil. The cake is ready.

Decorate to taste

Let me explain right away that the author does not advise a child to eat mastic, so this is what he explains.

QUESTION: a delicious and beautiful cake. decorated with mastic?
ANSWER: Yes with mastic. But this cake was to order and they wanted mastic, in fact, it does not go well from the cake itself, because the cake is damp and not covered with cream on top. Therefore, I advise you not to decorate for the house. But if to order, then warn that the mastic should be removed with a knife

Recipe No. 5

The base of the cake – “Nezhenka” biscuits or any other baby biscuits. Cookies are dipped in a milk mixture, laid out on a plate, then cottage cheese or fruit puree is put (what your baby already eats), then fruits (bananas, kiwi, tangerines – again what your child eats and is not allergic to), again cookies, etc.d.
It all depends on your imagination. It is advisable to rehearse in advance, so as not to spoil everything in the hour “x”.
Sometimes cottage cheese and fruits give a lot of juice, then the cookies do not need to be soaked, or dipped through one!

You can cook for the cake marmalade from apples:
From 500 grams of green peeled apples, squeeze the juice without pulp. Cook without sugar over low heat for 40-50 minutes, until a good brown color appears (so that the spoon does not drip quickly).Pour the resulting marmalade over the cake.

A one-year-old child is allowed to pamper, pamper, not feed, sweets prepared only on fructose.

Products for making baby cake with whipped cream

The list of products for this children’s cake is more than modest.

  1. Square or rectangular cookies (absolutely any cookie that you already give your baby, as well as the one that you like). It doesn’t matter whether it’s soft or hard. Anyone will do. By the way, a good reason to use cookies that are tired and lie, no one eats them (if you have one :-))
  2. Bananas – 5 pieces of medium size
  3. Cream (at least 30% fat) – 250 ml
  4. Cottage cheese (homemade) – 0.5 kg
  5. Granulated sugar – 1/2 cup (grind into powdered sugar or just use powdered sugar)
  6. Vanillin – 1 sachet
  7. Milk for soaking biscuits

Recipe for making Children’s cake with whipped cream for the first birthday with photo

We remove the cream, the container in which we will whip them and the whisk for the mixer in the refrigerator to cool down.It is advisable to do this much in advance (so that the cream is very cold), or put it in the freezer to cool it down quickly, but it is important to prevent the product from freezing.

Take the blender bowl and put coarsely chopped (broken) bananas there. Using a blender, grind it all into a homogeneous gruel – mashed potatoes. If there is no blender, you can simply grind with a fork, but this will, of course, take much longer.

Cooking powdered sugar. Pour granulated sugar into a small blender bowl, send vanillin there and grind the sugar into powder.

On the cutting board (in the absence of a large square dish) we cover the baking paper (so as not to stain the board and it would be easier to cut and transfer the cake).

We take out the cream from the refrigerator and begin to whip it with powdered sugar. You can read about how to whip cream for a cake in the article

When the cream is whipped into a foam, add the cottage cheese there and beat gently, starting at low turns, gradually increasing the speed. Then we also gradually reduce the rotation speed. Cream with whipped cream and cottage cheese is ready.

Pour some milk into a shallow plate and heat it up.

Now we put cookies in this plate, dip it completely for just a few seconds (if the cookies are kept in milk for a long time, they will swell and break).

Take out and place cookies on baking parchment (or square dish). I put 4 pieces in length and 2.5 in height (you can see it in the photo).Square biscuits make it easier to get an even cake shape. I had a rectangular one, so I had to break the cookies a little. This is the bottom layer of the cookie.

Next, we grease this layer with banana puree. Don’t skimp, the amount of mashed potatoes is made with a margin. So make a normal layer of mashed banana. Then, on top of the banana puree, make a layer of curd cream with cream.

And again a layer of cookies. Now I have placed the livers in a different order. There are no such problems with square cookies.

Now swap the layers. A layer of cream with cottage cheese, and on top is a layer of banana puree.

Put the livers soaked in milk again.

A layer of banana puree (lay out all the leftovers, the layer turns out to be good … high ;-))

Coat the sides and top of the pie with cream and cottage cheese. The layer also turns out to be thick and of high quality.

Everything! We send the cake to the refrigerator for the night.

This is a cross-sectional view of a children’s cake.

The cake turns out to be very delicate, airy due to whipped banana and light cream of whipped cream and cottage cheese. They ate it very quickly. I myself did not expect such a success.

Recipe # 7 already exists. but here I still brought in, look how it was made-slide ..

Cake for a year

2.Place the cookies in a deep dish suitable for the future cake.
3. Pour the sour cream-banana cream over the cookies.
4. Leave to soak in the refrigerator overnight.

Happy first birthday of your baby!

90,000 First birthday cake

How fast time flies! Yesterday, it seems, a small eggplant was screaming in our arms, but today – already a very big person! 🙂 The first birthday of a daughter or son is an important and very exciting event, of course, exclusively for parents 🙂 Here I am like an exemplary mother I was madly worried, planned and prepared, and with a small, and even a hyperactive child, it’s not very easy. But something, and I could not afford to entrust the birthday cake to someone else! It’s not enough to do it, you still need to figure out what and how. Therefore, to make it a little easier for other mothers, I decided to write my own version of the cake for a year old, despite the fact that: a) I did not have time to make a photo session for the cake, as I collected it just before serving and took it off on the fly, b) the cake is suitable only for those parents who admit the presence of wheat flour, eggs, milk, berries, drops of sugar and even … gelatin in it! This issue can be treated in different ways, and I myself think that it is better for children to eat unsalted and unsweetened food.As for gelatin (although there is quite a bit of it there!), Having sifted through many sources, I did not find any strict prohibitions or a frank “You can!” It seemed to me that it was like vaccinations: there is no right one, there is only your personal decision. In general, for the sake of the holiday, I made an exception. Moreover, let’s be honest: at this age, children do not eat cakes very much at all! Many, like, for example, my madam, in principle, hardly accept any complementary foods. So I prepared the cake with all the other adults and young guests in mind. And it turned out perfect! Fresh, delicate, tasty, naturally beautiful cake!

  • classic biscuit soaked in applesauce,
  • light creamy curd mousse with strawberry puree,
  • unaddressed baby curd – for top coat,
  • shortbread cookies with almond crumbs and fresh blueberries and red currants for garnish.

Of course, you can take other berries or fruits and not make cookies, but just buy, for example, a candle.Or stretch like this baby cake. Or make (order) painted gingerbread. Anything! Only mastic figures will not work: they will begin to melt from the wet cream.

Come on!

Bake a biscuit

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees. We line the form with a diameter of 16 cm with baking paper. Take 4 eggs, separate the whites from the yolks. Beat the yolks with 60 g of sugar until creamy and almost white. Beat the whites until a strong foam, add 60 g of sugar and continue to beat until traces of a whisk, density and shine.Gently, preferably with a silicone spatula, folding upward movements, mix the whites into the yolks. Sift 120 g of wheat flour. With the same gentle movements, we introduce it into the egg-sugar mixture. Make sure that there are no unmixed “islands” of flour left in the dough, but try to keep it light! Pour the dough into a mold, gently level and place in the oven. We bake for about 30 minutes, do not open the oven, preferably during the entire baking time, or at least the first 15 minutes! We check the readiness with a dry thin torch. When pressed, the finished biscuit should spring. We take it out of the oven, let it stand for five minutes, hold it with a thin knife between the walls of the form and the edges of the biscuit, take the biscuit out of the mold and turn it over onto the wire rack. You can simply turn it over onto a flat surface covered with baking paper. It will also not hurt to wrap it in cling film. Leave on for 8-12 hours: the classic biscuit must stand, otherwise it will get wet from the impregnation and break and crumble strongly.

Making strawberry puree

We need 100 g of strawberry puree.Considering that we will wipe the mashed potatoes through a sieve, in order to rid it of the seeds, the berries must be taken at least 300 g. The frozen strawberries must be defrosted and the excess liquid drained. And so everything is simple: chop the strawberries in a blender and, in fact, rub through a sieve. It will be tedious, but it’s still worth making: the pitted puree is much softer and the dessert itself benefits a lot from this!

Cooking creamy curd mousse

Fill 10 g of gelatin with cold water. Beat 200 g of classic children’s curd with a mixer.100 g strawberry puree and 1 tbsp. l. sugar or powdered sugar, stirring occasionally, heat to almost boil. Let it cool a little (it is best if there is a culinary thermometer – up to 60 degrees), add the gelatin, mix thoroughly and dissolve it in the puree. Cool to room temperature and add to the curd. Whisk 200 g of 33% cream and gently, trying to maintain their lightness, mix in the curd-strawberry mass. Instead of cream, you can take weighed sour cream. You will need to make it the day before: just buy sour cream from 20%, put it in several layers of clean gauze, tie it with a bag and hang it, fixing it over a container where the serum will drain.I have adapted to doing this in the refrigerator. Endure the night. Squeeze the cheesecloth well. Ready!

Putting the cake together!

Laying the mold or sliding ring with a thick film. The cake turns out to be tall, the width of the film must be appropriate! Cut the biscuit into 4 cakes. We take 200 g of applesauce (I have ready-made puree for baby food, but you can make your own, here I wrote how), if it is thick, dilute it a little with water. From the bottom of our hearts we saturate every cake with it. We weigh our mousse and divide it into three parts. We spread the cake in the form, fill it with mousse, carefully put the second cake on it, press it lightly, pour out the second part of the mousse, etc. As the top, you need to take the smoothest and most beautiful cake. I usually have this one that was the base of the biscuit. We put in the refrigerator overnight, for at least 7 hours. This is exactly how long gelatin takes to “grab”. Then carefully remove it from the mold, remove the film. We take 400 g of baby cottage cheese without additives (I have 4 packs of the classic “Tyoma” biotvag), add 1 tbsp.l. powdered sugar (you do not need to add) and gently cover the sides and top of the cake. I do this with a large, wide pastry scraper. The curd is quite liquid, and it is better to make the coating in at least two stages. Apply the cream – put it in the refrigerator for half an hour. We got it out and walked through the second layer. I was in a hurry and held it for at least 10 minutes, but even so it turned out nicely. And now – the coolest!

Decoration! 🙂

Wash and dry the berries, distribute them on the cake as you like. Insert cookies, gingerbread cookies, a stretcher or a candle into the middle.Of course, it makes no sense to make one cookie specifically for the cake. But it makes sense to prepare delicious sand baskets or just a lot of cookies for a sweet table, and at the same time bake one. I write how. Mix 185 g of wheat flour and 30 g of ground almonds, 3 g of baking powder, a pinch of fine salt and 70 g of powdered sugar. Add 100 g of diced butter at room temperature. Mix with a mixer using the Hook attachment until crumbs, add the yolk of a large egg, mix again until the dough gathers into a lump.Next, quickly knead with your hands, roll it out between two sheets of baking paper to a thickness of 0.5 – 0.7 cm.Place in the freezer for 10 minutes. We take out, cut out cookies with molds, and if the required mold is not available, you can try to cut it with a thin knife. I did just that! We spread on a baking sheet covered with paper, put in an oven preheated to 180 degrees and bake for 10-12 minutes until barely noticeable browning. You don’t have to put almonds, but just add an equal amount of wheat flour, but with nuts it tastes better, more aromatic and crunches better! 🙂

Here is such a simple, but very tasty, delicate, naturally beautiful and, it seems, even elegant cake for the first birthday we got it!

Thanks to Anya for inspiration and advice!

Birthday cake

For a birthday, a child always wants to cook something extraordinary! Amazing, beautiful, delicious! In order to please and amaze, first of all, the birthday man himself, and then the guests 🙂 And now, a month before the holiday, I wondered what to bake for the children for their holidays this year? We have birthdays one after another, every other day 🙂 Last time I made a Solar System Cake for my son, and a Turtle Cake for my daughter. What to come up with now? After consulting with the children, I found out that they want a cake from several floors. I have never done this before – the task is difficult, but interesting!

We have discussed the number of floors and their composition many times. As a result, a cake in the shape of Saturn was prepared for the son, and for the daughter – a cake of three floors, similar to … a pink hat, as the guests accurately noted. 🙂. And it turned out to be not so difficult! Try to build such a birthday cake for every mother, and the delight of the child and guests is the best reward for their efforts!

  • biscuit cake;
  • cake crust;
  • honey cakes;
  • sour cream;
  • butter and condensed milk cream;
  • mastic.

How to make a cake for a children’s birthday:

Actually the recipe, I think, can be omitted here, since the cake is rather a way of assembling, not cooking. For a three-tiered cake, you can bake any base cakes you like. Most importantly, we take into account that the bottom cake should be the densest so as not to sag under the weight of the upper ones; middle floor – medium and in terms of density; and the top one is the lightest and most airy. For example, like this:

– lower tier – honey cake or shortbread cake;
– middle tier – muffin, muffin biscuit or chocolate cakes;
– top floor – biscuit or puff cake.

Our cake consists of the following parts:

Ground floor – honey cake with sour cream (sour cream + sugar + a little water – beat with a mixer and smear, making sure that the cream does not come out at the edges, otherwise it will interfere with decorating the cake with mastic) – the cakes for the honey cake were baked to the full width of the baking sheet and cut off along the lid of a bucket with a diameter of 29 cm;

Second – chocolate cake in a mold with a diameter of 23 cm, with butter cream, whipped with condensed milk;

The third – a biscuit in the form of 17 cm, with cottage cheese cream (since it is dry, it is also better to coat it with oil, just not all children can use a fat cream).

You can look at the recipes for all the cakes on the links on the site.

Let’s bake all the cakes. Let’s smear the honey cake – all the cakes, except for the top one, but don’t rush to put the second floor on it. First, you need to hold the first tier of the cake under a press so that it compresses and then does not shrink. We cover the first floor with a plank, and put something on top – for example, the same second floor.

In half an hour, you can collect the cake! We put the floors on top of each other and coat with butter cream (butter + condensed milk). We coat with a thin, but even layer, and the cream will also help to level the cakes, where necessary. Then we put the cake in the refrigerator and make mastic. How to cook it, I have already told in the recipes for the Ship and Saturn cakes, here I will repeat it just in case 🙂

Pour ¾ packs of marshmallow marshmallows (about 150-160g) into heat-resistant dishes. I took colored marshmallows, and the mastic also turned out to be pale pink, without the addition of dyes. Add 2 teaspoons of milk and butter to the marshmallow, and heat in the microwave until the marshmallow melts (about 1-1.5 minutes at 680-850 power).

Then take 1-1.5 cups of powdered sugar and potato starch and, adding them one by one, knead the mastic – while hot – with a spoon, and then with your hands. We add dry ingredients gradually, so as not to overdo it: it is difficult to roll out steep mastic. The finished mastic turns out to be elastic and soft, like plasticine well mashed in the hands. We roll it into a ball, wrap it in a bag or cling film, and put it in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.

Hurray! Let’s get down to the most exciting thing – cake decoration! Taking the cake and mastic out of the refrigerator, roll the mastic into a layer of 1-2 mm thickness. It is very convenient to put on a silicone mat – it does not slide out like cling film, and the mastic does not stick to the table.

Having rolled out a layer of sufficient size, carefully lift it up and cover the cake. Pressing the mastic to the sides of the cake, we form its silhouette. I didn’t know what to do with the excess mastic, how to trim them to make it look beautiful, and in the end I decided not to trim at all, but made beautiful folds out of them.

We cut off the excess edges at the bottom, carefully tuck the edges of the mastic under the bottom of the cake, and from the scraps you can make decorations: roses, bows, hearts, and we even blinded the sparkle from the cartoon 🙂

We decorate the cake with mastic details, decorative sugar stars ( decorative elements can be glued to the mastic by slightly moistening their underside with water).

Here we have such a cake!

Food poisoning or rotavirus infection

Food poisoning or rotavirus infection -?

After long and active New Year holidays, many little fans of Santa Claus may face a difficult test in the form of fever and signs of food poisoning, or intestinal infection. What to do: such is the price for pleasure, and the smaller the child, the certainly higher the chances for him to either catch the virus, or become a victim, shall we say, of the frivolity of the parents who allowed their child to gorge on dubious foods.

Of course, we understand that the New Year and the events accompanying this phenomenon are force majeure circumstances, or, as the lawyers say, force majeure. Indeed, how can you avoid contact with sources of various infections when there is a holiday around, and besides, there are already older brothers and sisters in the family?

Not every loving mother will decide to leave a one and a half year old baby in the care of grandmothers while the elders are having fun at a party or at the Christmas tree. And I completely agree with her: in general, sooner or later, but contact with an infection in a child must take place, these are the laws of nature, and this is not a reason to spoil the holiday for a small family member.

And yet, how to distinguish the onset of intestinal, most often rotavirus infection, from banal food poisoning?

Correct! It is necessary to measure the child’s body temperature. True, with food poisoning, it can also be increased, but this increase usually does not last more than a day. While rotavirus infection proceeds with pronounced symptoms of intoxication, including a rather high fever, which lasts at least 3 to 4 days. This is the first difference between rotavirus infection and food poisoning, or else, as some doctors put it, enzymatic breakdown.Such a “functional breakdown” of the digestive system in connection with major holidays is typical not only for children, but for adults, whose body is “exhausted narzan”. Children do not drink “narzan”, but the abundance of new and poorly digested foods on the table often leads the child’s body to rather serious consequences, which are based on an acute disorder of the pancreas. Nevertheless, we now know that the initial manifestations of both a viral infection and poisoning are very similar, almost identical, these are: a sudden increase in body temperature, vomiting and abdominal pain.

The main differences between rotavirus infection and an acute functional disorder of the digestive tract in a child are mainly as follows:

prolonged increase in body temperature , and sometimes with “recurrent fever” after 1 – 2 days of normal temperature.

Vomiting with rotavirus infection is most often repeated , although a child who has eaten too much chocolate cake or raw smoked sausage can also vomit twenty times.Consider this when choosing a New Year’s children’s menu. Also, a salad with mayonnaise and an egg can come out of a child for a long time.

Abdominal pain after food poisoning, as a rule, immediately after vomiting , or at least significantly reduced to “bearable”. While rotavirus infection in child will be accompanied by rhythmic attacks of intestinal spasms, colic, which will persist for several more days, and sometimes even up to 2 weeks, especially with premature withdrawal from the diet.

loose stools with rotavirus infection also persist for more than 2 days , while food poisoning may not be accompanied by diarrhea at all, or the next day loose stools may even turn into constipation.

How to treat a child’s rotavirus infection and / or food poisoning?

Answer: at home level – the same.

The first principle in the treatment of intestinal infections is the restoration of water-salt metabolism. For a drinking regimen, slightly sweet tea with a slice of lemon, cranberry juice, mineral water like Esentuki 4 without gas are quite suitable. But the main thing: you need to drink in small portions often, and not vice versa. Small children have to drink teaspoons every 10 to 15 minutes.

A good helper for any poisoning is enterosgel or smecta.

Naturally, the child “unloads” in the diet for 8 hours, and then, if asked, you can offer oatmeal or rice porridge in water with a small amount of vegetable oil, bioyogurt or kefir, dry biscuits, preferably a little salty, white bread without butter , baked apple in the oven or double boiler.Porridge can be replaced with mashed potatoes with starch broth (in which the potatoes were cooked). And approximately this nutrition is waiting for the child for at least 3 days. This is in any case: there was a rotavirus or a crime against the pancreas, the pediatrician should already figure it out, and the diet will have to be followed without options.

After three days, if the stool becomes mushy and yellow (and before that it can be gray, green or even colorless), you can cook steamed chicken breast meatballs or cod fillets.Better with rice.

And about such dishes as chicken eggs, scrambled eggs, sausages and fried potatoes will have to be forgotten for a month.

Drug therapy for rotavirus or any other intestinal infection already requires medical supervision. In order to stop vomiting, before the doctor arrives, you can give the child motilium in syrup or a chewable tablet, depending on age, and all the same smecta, or enterosgel, and that’s it. Further – what the doctor prescribes.

And for the next New Year, you need to remember two things:

1 – This is that rotavirus infection does not leave strong immunity, and you can get sick with it as many times as you want.True, recently a rotavirus vaccine for children from 2 to 8 months has been registered in Russia. So if you are going to fly to Egypt or Bulgaria for the New Year, you can try to protect yourself and your child from unpleasant surprises, but this must be planned in advance.
