Al star lamy: LAMY AL-star – Product Information and Writing Systems

Amazon.com : Lamy Al-Star Fountain Pen, Graphite (L26F) : Lamy Alstar : Office Products

The Al-Star is an aluminum version of the Lamy Safari. Lamy makes some wonderful pens, including my all-time favorite fountain pen, the Lamy 2000. Lamy pens generally enjoy sophisticated design without the kitsch that surrounds much fountain pen design. And, for the most part, the Al-Star fulfills this heritage.

There really isn’t much difference between the writing experience with cheaper Lamy pens. The Safari writes like an Al-Star, which writes like a Vista, which writes like a Logo, which writes like an LX

The Lamy Al-Star, Safari, Vista and LX all have the same shape, a wire pocket clip, identical nibs and ink windows. The Safari is made of plastic, while the Al-Star and LX are made of aluminum, with the Al-Star anodized in a variety of cool colors combined with chrome clips and the LX in some funkier colors (rose gold) with matching clips. The Vista appears to be a clear plastic (demonstrator) Safari.

We’re looking here at a surprisingly cheap ($27 in November 2017) Lamy Al-Star. This is a good price for an Al-Star, which usually start around $32. I suspect the cheaper price is due to the rather unremarkable color….

Lamy nibs are generally smooth and consistent. They’re replaceable. You can find Lamy nibs in different sizes if you hurt your nib, or want a different flow.

Cheap Lamys generally last until you lose them or drop them. They’re great workhorse fountain pens.

That said, these are the negatives I’ve experienced with Lamy Safaris, Al-Stars, etc.

1) Lack of a piston filler. For a big pen, these things hold surprisingly little ink when used with a standard converter. I far prefer using a syringe to refill Lamy cartridges. I suspect refilled cartridges hold 2/3 more ink than converters.

2) Lamy clips bag out over time. Don’t pull on the clip if you don’t have to. It will lose its tightness.

3) Lamy caps snap on with an inner plastic ring on the cap fitting over a ridge on the barrel of the pen. But use them enough and the cap will loosen and no longer snap tightly shut. I’ve had more than a few Safaris, Al-Stars, etc. become unusable because the cap loses its ability to hold tight. And I’ve ruined a number of shirts by caps falling off in my pocket and ink soaking into the fabric.

4) Aluminum Al-Stars dent and scratch fairly easily.

I won’t pay over $29 for a low-end Lamy, no matter what material it’s made of. It seems you pay a premium for color and a further premium for metal barrels with Lamy. But the dark matte Safaris look good longer than the rest.

After decades of buying Al-Stars and Safaris, I’ve moved on. A number of Indian and Chinese pen manufacturers are putting out quality pens for half the price, with piston fillers to boot. Check out Jinhao and Fountain Pen Revolution pens here on Amazon if you want to be a little more adventurous.

Lamy AL-Star mechanical pencil review

Today: a look at Lamy’s AL-Star mechanical pencil. The AL-Star series of pens was released in 1997 and was created by Wolfgang Fabian, the same designer who came up with the fantastic Lamy Safari.

I was a fairly early user of the Lamy Safari – I’ve been using Safari fountain pens since the mid 1980s. However, because I have always been happy with the Safari, I have been a quite late adopter of the Lamy AL-Star, which was released in 1997. I had an AL-Star fountain pen for a while, but have only started using the mechanical pencil this week.

The AL-Star pens look very similar to the Safari pens and both series offer a fountain pen, ballpoint pen, rollerball, and mechanical pencil. Unfortunately the mechanical pencil seems to be the ‘poor relation’ in both series of pens when it comes to special editions, for e.g. this year’s charged green AL-Star or dark lilac Safari, are both not available as mechanical pencils. I guess this might imply that the mechanical pencil doesn’t sell that well, but if that is the case I have no idea why, because the mechanical pencils of both series are beautifully made.

The AL-Star mechanical pencil looks similar to the ballpoint pen. Both are retractable and one of the biggest visual differences is the look of the push button. The rollerball, on the other hand, looks quite similar to the fountain pen. Both the rollerball and fountain pen have a cap. The main visual difference is that the rollerball has a round body without an ink window.

Top: Ballpoint pen with Futura font engraving. Bottom: Mechanical pencil with Biolinum font engraving (free alternative to Optima)

The mechanical pencil

The Safari and AL-Star fountain pens are fairly well known. Their grip sections are round, but have two flat sides – one for thumb, one for index finger – creating a nice shape to hold the grip. I never had any problems with it despite using it many hours a day for a lot of years (when it was my school pen), but I have read on the web that some people don’t find the grip section very comfortable.

The AL-Star mechanical pencil is well built

Well, the mechanical pencil offers a clever twist. Instead of two flat sides it has three flat sides, making it possible to hold it in three different positions. This makes it possible to rotate the pencil so that the lead can be used more evenly. The main problem to rotating the mechanical pencil is the clip though. When it doesn’t face upwards it will rest on your hand between thumb and index finger. Not everyone might like that, but this is only a problem if you rotate your pencils, and it does bother you.

The AL-Star’s grip sections are transparent

The Safari and AL-Star pencils used to be available in 0.5mm and 0.7mm, but unfortunately Lamy seems to have gotten rid of the 0.5mm version, at least here in the UK. I was lucky to have received The Pen Company’s last 0.5mm version (and this was also the deciding factor for my decision: AL-Star vs Safari).

The engraving

I noticed that The Pen Company started offering free laser engraving on many pens, including the AL-Star line, so I just had to try this out. Other companies charge quite a bit of money for custom engraving, so I was positively surprised to see free engraving, even on relatively cheap pens, like the AL-Star (the rollerball, mechanical pencil and ballpoint pen are under £16 each) – in fact, I was so happy with the free engraving that I then bought my wife a Lamy Pico with custom engraving too. She had a red Pico – her favourite pen – for many years, bought in a local shop that closed down years ago. Over the years it acquired some scratches, so I thought she might like another one, and IMHO the white one is beautiful. She recently had her PhD ceremony, so I ordered the Pico with her name and new title!

Via email I talked to James from The Pen Company about the engraving process, and he provided me with the following information:

“The engraving process is actually very quick and only takes a few seconds, once the artwork is created.

“Different materials react differently to the laser, some change colour and some are simply obliterated to leave, in some cases, a pretty deep channel.  The anodised surface of your pen has changed to the white colour for one of two reasons; the heat of the laser has caused a physical change to the anodised surface creating the colour change or it has simply removed, or partly removed, the darker anodised surface to reveal the lighter aluminium beneath.

“For most metals it simply cuts a deep(ish) channel, stainless steel reacts very well in this way, as does “natural” untreated aluminium.  Most of the time we tend to use a lower power setting particularly on plated or anodised surfaces either to avoid cutting all the way through the plating (you don’t necessarily want to see brass through platinum/rhodium plating) or so we can work the surface several times until we decide the finish looks good without overdoing it.”

A close up of the engraving. You can just about make out the dots that make up the letters.

Overall conclusion

The AL-Star mechanical pencil is a great pencil. It is a shame that there aren’t as many colours available for the pencil as there are for the pens from the rest of the series. It is also sad that Lamy has stopped offering the 0.5mm version (at least in Europe).

I guess technically this is a sliding sleeve pencil: the sleeve can slide back if you try hard, but while the Lamy Logo’s sliding sleeve mechanism works fairly well the AL-Star’s doesn’t and wasn’t intended to be. The good news here is that even though the sleeve doesn’t slide while you write, you can retract the sleeve to make the AL-Star more pocket friendly.

I don’t think you will find many mechanical pencils with a design and price range combination like the AL-Star. Many mechanical pencils are either affordable drafting pencils or more expensive design items (such as Montblanc, Pelikan, etc.) The AL-Star is one of the rare hybrids: an affordable design pencil, which, by the way, won the iF Design award 1999.

Balanced on this type you can see that the pen’s balance is great

I would like to thank The Pen Company for providing this pen free of charge so that I can review it.

What Fort Bragg soldiers say about Afghanistan drawdown deployment

FORT BRAGG — A special Veterans Day podcast released Thursday features Fort Bragg’s highest-ranking general sitting down to talk to Immediate Response Force paratroopers who were part of the nation’s historic deployment to Afghanistan in August.

The 82nd Airborne Division’s Immediate Response Force is able to deploy anywhere in the world within 18 hours.

On FORSCOM’s “Frontline” podcast, Gen. Michael Garrett, commander of the U.S. Army Forces Command, spoke to 1st Brigade Combat Team soldiers, Capt. Cody Chellman, Sgt. Gunner Parsons, and Spc. Alsajjad Al Lami, about their experiences during the rapid deployment in August.

“I’m interested in what they saw, what they did and the impressions on them,” Garrett said.

According to a FORSCOM, Chellman is from the Nashville, Tennessee, area and has been in the Army for 16 years.

His parents retired from the Army in 2005 with a combined 62 years of service.

Parsons’ father served in the Marine Corps for more than 28 years.

Al Lami was born in Iraq. His father was an interpreter for the Army from 2004 to 2011.

The family immigrated to the U.S. in 2015, and Al Lami served as an interpreter for the Army during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Garrett asked the soldiers about their time in Afghanistan helping with evacuation efforts that marked the end of the nearly 20-year-long war in the country.

“Everybody has their idea of what Afghanistan is like, and we got there and it was dark. … It was not like what we were expecting at all,” Parsons said.

Chellman spokes about how Immediate Response Force missions also impact families.

“This IRF deployment was unlike anything I’ve ever been a part of,” the married father of two said. “We normally have that target date on the wall and everyone slowly gets ready and mentally prepares for this.”

Chellman said the alert for the mission came on what was supposed to be a fun day for his kids — their first day of school.

The FORSCOM Frontline podcas featuring Gen. Garrett’s conversation with the soldiers can be found on all podcast platforms to include Apple, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Stitcher and Castbox.

It can also be found on YouTube and the FORSCOM Facebook page.

UAE bans some Mideast travelers from flights to Belarus

BAGHDAD — The United Arab Emirates has banned travelers from several Middle Eastern countries from boarding flights to Belarus, cutting off one of the last major air routes for would-be migrants to a nation on the European Union’s eastern border.

The decision reported by travel agencies in Iraq Monday and the Belarus carrier appeared to be in response to diplomatic pressure to stem the tide of migrants that have made their way to Belarus, resulting in a humanitarian crisis with thousands of people stranded on the Belarus-Polish border in freezing weather. At least nine have died.

The development came as the European Union on Monday ratcheted up pressure on Belarus by agreeing to slap sanctions on airlines accused of helping President Alexander Lukashenko wage a “hybrid attack” against the bloc using migrants.

Thousands of people from around the Middle East, many of them Iraqis and Syrians, have been trying to cross into the EU this year through a backdoor opened by non-EU member Belarus.

In recent months, Belarus began offering easy tourist visas to Iraqis, Syrians and others from the Middle East and Africa. This meant they could now reach the edge of Europe on comfortable flights to Belarus, then try to sneak into Poland, Lithuania or Latvia, all EU members.

But several airlines have either suspended flights or halted ticket sales to travelers from Iraq and Syria in response to the crisis at the border.

A travel agent in Baghdad on Monday shared with The Associated Press a memo from the low cost FlyDubai airlines announcing that nationals from Iraq, Syria, Yemen and Afghanistan were banned from boarding its flights to Minsk, requesting that no tickets be sold to nationals from these countries.

“We are committed not to sell tickets,” said Baghdad travel agent Yasser al-Lami, who said he was not selling tickets to Minsk anyway after the situation on the border deteriorated. “I cannot send travelers to the unknown and (to their) death,” he said.

The Belarusian airline, Belavia, said in a statement Sunday that it will be strengthening documents verification during check-in for flights from Dubai, citing the decision of the competent authorities in the United Arab Emirates to ban nationals from the four countries from boarding flights to Minsk.

“Passengers subject to this ban can refund their tickets at the place of purchase,” it said.

FlyDubai did not comment directly on the ban, but in a statement to the AP, it said it “only carries passengers with the correct documents and entry requirements for travel to Belarus.”

“FlyDubai follows all international regulations and we have an open dialogue with the relevant authorities,” the company said.

Flight options for travelers to Minsk from the region had already been shrinking. Turkey said Friday it is halting airline tickets to Iraqis, Syrians and Yemenis wanting to travel to Belarus. Citing that decision, the Belarusian airline Belavia said it also would not ticket citizens of those countries on its Istanbul-Minsk flight.

Cham Wings, a Syrian airline, said in a statement this weekend that it had suspended flights from Damascus to Minsk in response to the situation at the Belarusian-Polish border.

“Here I am a sucker”: Kirkorov did not recognize the named brother, who was a Lama in the show “Mask”

Lama was the main vocalist of project

Literally in the penultimate issue, Valeria unexpectedly gave out the version for everyone: Lama is Yusif Eyvazov. Has the famous operatic tenor who shines on the best stages in the world attending the show? Nobody believed it at first. But when the Lama and Crocodile met in the final, and the jury voted equally, Philip Kirkorov took the floor.

“I am glad that this artist had a free three months, and he was able to visit our program. He was my main consultant all this time, in his family there is the greatest singer Anna Netrebko. But the pandemic will end, theaters will open, and tenor number 1 will continue touring around the world, leaving the stage, ”said the king of pop and asked to take off Lama’s mask.

Indeed, Yusif Eyvazov turned out to be Lama, who has demonstrated miracles of weight loss in recent years: the opera star has lost 35 kilograms. It turned out that from the very first issue he dreamed of participating in The Mask.

Yusif Eyvazov was hiding under the Lama Mask

“Last year they called and asked if I wanted to? I knew that in January I had eight performances of Turandot at La Scala, and in February – five performances in Paris, so I did not understand how I would do it technically, but decided to fulfill my dream, ”Yusif said.

By the way, the wife was supported by the opera diva Anna Netrebko: she appeared in the hall after her husband took off the mask. “And I also say:“ Anechka, come as a special guest. Here I am a sucker, ”Kirkorov lamented.

44-year-old Eyvazov was not at all offended by his friend, who voted for the victory of another artist in the final. He himself decided to support a colleague with whom he became very friendly during the show.“I want to share this victory with Rhino. We took her with you, you are an incredible musician. I was very worried when you left, ”Yusif said to Kirill Turichenko, who, by the way, was present in the hall.

For Yusif, participating in the NTV project was a dream
Only Anna Netrebko knew who was under the guise of Lama

“17 January. Alive. I am sending the first news. Return from hell. Chapter 1: “Open your eyes.”Now I know that hell exists. I am so exhausted by inhuman pain that I even breathe every other time. Thanks for the love. This is what keeps me going. Heavenly shield with me. Ahead is the next stage, no less difficult and cruel. Thanks to those who didn’t quit, ”the singer said, adding to her post such hashtags as“ mortal combat ”,“ attacked the wrong one ”and“ I’ll be back, whatever the cost ”.

We pray for you ”,“ Fight, you can ”,“ Dear, you are so smart.I hug you tightly “,” Strength to you, faith and love “,” Everything will be fine! ” – wrote in the comments to the artist’s record.

The operation is urgent, difficult, several organs will be cut out. In Moscow. The complication of its outcome is added by my intolerance to a large range of drugs (anesthesia, anesthesia, antibiotics, etc.), which happened after the attack on me in 2012 and all the previous troubles. To say how I feel now is to say nothing. I can’t do it alone, ”the singer said.
