Im on day 3 of the hair, seems decent for the price. Tips: co-wash before installing and use a wide tooth comb to brush out the curls to make it look more natural. I’d also recommend using a curling cream and let it air dry.
I would not recommend sleeping with them in as the hair is not the best quality and would likely mat or ruin, even if wrapped, much quicker. In saying that it definitely makes it more efforty installing them daily 🙂
All in all for day 3, not terrible. I’d likely buy again.

EDIT: April 29, 2021

The hair is still in good shape. I wear the clips about 4-6 days a week and cannot complain at all for the price.

The care routine I have been doing has really worked… however, again. can be a little efforty and sometimes I dread it or will skip a couple days give or take.

I co-wash once a week and wash with shampoo about once every 2 ish weeks. Shampooing these really dries them out, so I would be cautious.

After the wash/co-wash, I will use a curling cream (Fructus butter cream has been pretty good and is reasonably priced) and will lay them flat to air dry.

After 2 or 3 days of using them, I will get them wet (not using any product including conditioner) and lay them flat to dry. I found I like the texture and bounce of the curls after getting them wet the first time after using the curling cream.

The only time you should comb these out is when they are wet/when conditioning. And be sure to use a wide tooth comb.

Again, I would not recommend sleeping with them… however, I have had a little play time with my BF and did not ruin them! haha… just had to get them wet that night or the next day.

I’ve ordered another two pack of these. I would 100% recommend buying them for the price!

Best Clip in Hair Extensions for African American Hair

If you’re having a major haircut regret cutting your hair too short or you’re just curious about what you’d look like with luscious long locks, but no idea where to start with you looking for some hair extensions then we’ve got all the information to help you out.

Clip-in extensions would be a great option for you if you’re looking to try out different lengths and styles of hair but not wanting to commit to crazy expensive permanent extensions that require professional help to remove.

Finding great hair extensions for African American hair can make it so much harder so we’ve created this simple guide to show you the best clip in hair extensions for African American hair.

We’ve included 5 reviews of the best options, a buyer’s guide of the important information you need to consider before buying clip in hair extensions for your hair, and some frequently asked questions from people in your position.

Best Clip in Hair Extensions for African American Hair Buying Guide

Real or synthetic hair extensions?

Real hair extensions are the best option as you can adapt them better to your natural hair. Synthetic hair extensions cannot be dyed and hot tools can not be used on them so it will be more difficult to blend with your natural hair.

Length

You’ll need to consider what length you want your hair extensions to be, if you’ve got very fine short hair then going straight in with super long extensions won’t suit you and won’t seamlessly blend in.

If you have shorter hair and are looking to build volume in your hair and add a bit of length then you’ll want to go for something that is 14 inches or shorter in length.

If you’re new to wearing clips in extensions and aren’t quite sure how long you want to go then, 16-18 inches is always a safe standard option, it will lengthen your hair without it looking too obvious and fake.

If you’re looking to have lovely long, natural-looking hair then 20-22 inches in length is a good option, it will give the appearance of luscious long locks without looking questionable.

Now if you want to have long hair that reaches your tailbone and be the envy of your friends with some mermaid hair, then you’ll want to go for anything that is 22 inches and above.

Remember, if you use your hair extensions and find that they are too long for your liking you can always trim them slightly to how you’d prefer them to be.

When considering what length you want for your hair extensions, you’ll need to also take into consideration how tall you are and how this will affect the length of them in your hair.

If you are shorter in height, longer extensions will look longer than they actually are and if you are taller in height than long extensions may be shorter than you think.

You’ll also need to consider how you would like to style your hair when you have extensions in, if you like wearing your hair curly or wavy but still want it to be long, then you might want to think about buying extensions a few inches longer so you can keep the length whilst still having your preferred style, that’s because curling your hair will make it look shorter.

Weight & Thickness

The heavier the hair extensions, the thicker it is. However, 100g of 22-inch extensions are not as thick as 100g of 16inch extensions.

If you have thin hair, you’ll want to go with lower weight extensions otherwise it may look unnatural, anything around 80g should be adequate enough to add a bit of volume and length.

If you are seeking to have gorgeous volume with your hair extensions then anything between 130-180 grams would be a good option as they’ll add significant length and volume.

Style & Texture

Without it sounding too obvious, if you have straight hair then you are best off going for straight hair extensions so they will seamlessly match.

However, if you would like to have straight hair extensions but you currently have curly or kinky hair, you may want to consider a chemical or keratin treatment that smooths the hair making it less frizzy and more manageable, this will allow you your new extensions to all blend together.

If there are still parts of your hair that are wavy after the treatment, you could use a flat iron to go over these parts.

Curly hair extensions can be harder to match because curl sizes and texture can differ from person to person and they can prove difficult to blend in with your natural hair.

If you’re finding it difficult to find extensions that look like your own hair, then you can always buy straight extensions, straighten your hair, and then use a curling barrel (thinner for tighter curls) to match them up.

Colour

An important part of choosing your hair extensions is getting the color right, this is made a lot easier if your hair is currently its natural color and you have not dyed it. This means it’ll be easier to find a match to your exact color.

A lot of brands will offer quality color charts and pictures of the hair in good lighting so you can easily compare between them and your own. The most suitable colors for African American hair will be dark brown or natural black.

If you choose to get real hair instead of synthetic, then you will have the option to color it to match your own colored hair. This is a great option if you’ve got a very unique color dye on your natural hair already, it will allow you to get the perfect match.

However, dying your hair can really damage the quality of the hair extensions as sometimes they have already been previously dyed.

Best Clip in Hair Extensions for African American Hair – FAQ’s

Can your hair grow whilst wearing extensions?

Yes, if you’ve had your hair cut too short but don’t want to wait for it to grow out, you can wear extensions in the meanwhile and it will still continue to grow.

As you can install and remove clips in extensions within minutes, it won’t have an impact on your hair growth at all unless you decide to yank them out to remove them.

However, if you have tape or glued extensions and they are not installed or removed properly, it can damage the health of your hair roots and cause your hair to weaken and then split, which will require them to be cut to be healthier.

How can you tell the quality of human hair?

There is no definite set way to determine the quality of human hair by eye. If human hair extensions have been colored then they will not be in as great condition compared to undyed hair. If the human hair is matted, then that is a key signified that it is not in good condition either.

Which type of hair is better Brazilian or Malaysian?

Brazilian hair is naturally more coarse and thick, which makes it a better option for humid climates and does well when styled with heat, they’re most popularly used for lace wigs or sew-in extensions. Malaysian hair is straight and silky and is most commonly used by African American women.

How do you put clips in hair extensions in braids?

You should keep the thickness of the hair extensions at the crown of your head, that way it’ll avoid braids being stringy at the ends.

So instead of applying the hair extensions as you normally would to wear your hair down, place most of the extensions at the back of your head and then section your hair and continue to braid as you wish.

A single Fishtail braid and a single braid is one of the better options as you won’t be able to see the clips like you would with pigtail braids.

Are clip-in extensions a protective style?

Yes, clip-in extensions are a great alternative to traditional extensions as they are low maintenance and do not damage your hair as much as long as you look after them.

Clip-in hair extensions will still require you to main and care for them as you would normal extensions if you are to wear them every day.

90,000 Harvey B. Gentt Center for African American Arts + Culture, Charlotte, USA – HiSoUR Cultural History

The Harbio B. Gantt Center for African American Arts + Culture, formerly known as an African American Cultural Center, is located in Charlotte, North Carolina and is named after Harvey Gantt, the city’s first African American mayor and the first African American student at Clemson University. The current building is 46,500 sq. Ft, built over four floors and built for $ 18.6 million, opened and was named after Gant in October 2009 as part of what is now the Levin Center for the Arts on South Tryon Street.

The Harvey B. Gantt Center for African American Arts + Culture (formerly the African American Cultural Center) celebrates the contributions of Africans and African Americans to American culture and serves as an epicenter for music, dance, theater, visual arts, film, arts education, literature, and outreach community activities.

Situated on South Tryon and Stonewall Streets, the 46,490 square foot four-story building is a “modernist structure wrapped in glass and metal” 360 feet by 40 feet above the tunnels linking College and Stonewall Streets with a parking garage Duke Energy Center. To allow access from car and cargo ramps in a narrow area (400 x 60 feet), the lobby is on the second floor and is reached by stairs and escalators that form a central glass atrium and are based on Jacob’s staircase in the Book of Genesis.

The design was inspired by the Myers Street School in the Brooklyn area of Charlotte, the African-American part of the city, which was destroyed by the city’s renovation in the 1960s. The school was Charlotte’s only comprehensive school for African Americans from 1886 to 1907.Jacob’s staircase concept also appears outside the building. Another feature of the building is a rain screen with perforated metal panels in some areas and windows in others that resemble a blanket with fluorescent lamps that resemble seams. The Freelon Group won the 2009 Thomas Jefferson Award for Public Architecture from the American Institute of Architects for projects that include the Gantt Center.

On the east wing wall are diverging threads, Lucent Memories, a blanket-inspired work by David Wilson of Apex that recalls the Brooklyn story.

In a square linking the city center with buildings in other neighborhoods, Juan Logan’s intersections use Cuban specimens from the Democratic Republic of the Congo with chevron and diamond designs representing links between different cultures.

Mission
The Harby B. Gantt Center for African American Arts + Culture represents, preserves, and celebrates the excellence in the art, history and culture of African Americans and African descent. We spark interactions and conversations that inspire, expand, and enlighten everyone.

History:
In 1974, as an English professor and doctoral student at UNC-Charlotte, Mary Harper offered an African American Cultural Center for Charlotte. Working with Dr. Bertha Maxwell-Rodday, director of the Center for the Study of Black Universities, she called her proposal “Vistas Unlimited: An African American Center for Culture and Service Charlotte-Mecklenburg.” Harper and Roddy realized that people knew little about the accomplishments of African Americans, and especially African Americans from North Carolina. The center they were planning would allow blacks to celebrate who they are and what their people have done. Harper and Maxwell-Roddy started with a festival at Marshall Park, a former site in the Brooklyn area. After the second festival in 1975, women helped start an African-American cultural and service center.

For ten years starting in 1976, the African American Cultural Center used 605 square feet of the former First Baptist Church, known as Spirit Square. Other locations were considered, including the McColl Center for the Visual Arts.

The permanent location ultimately chosen was Little Rock A.M.E. Church of Zion. The church was planning a new sanctuary across the street from its existing site on Myers Street, and people worried that the old building might be demolished. The neoclassical revival brick building, which was Little Rock’s third site, was designed by James McKenna McMichael and was completed in June 1911 at a cost of $ 20,000. Little Rock sold his old building in the city in 1979 and moved to his new home in 1981.The building was declared a historical monument in 1982. 7th Street had to be expanded, putting the historic building at risk. Instead, the old church was renovated using $ 1.1 million. US donations and a US $ 540,000 grant from the city, and Dalton Morgan Shook & Partners as architects. On March 15, 1986, the African American Cultural Center officially opened its new 11,000 square foot home at Myers and 7th Street. The two-story building had three levels: a 180-seat theater and a 300-seat amphitheater. His classes included music, dance, theater, and visual arts.

Voters rejected the $ 95 million plan. US to cultural sites and a new arena in 2001. At the time, the plan was to expand the African American cultural center by $ 10 million. USA, which came from the arts package. In addition to the expansion, several new sites were reviewed.

On November 2, 2005, a $ 17.9 million plan for a new African American Cultural Center was announced.Doll. USA as part of the Wachovia Cultural Campus on Tryon Street. It will take a lot of attraction to attract visitors. Bank of America announced that it would provide the Hewitt collection in 1998, but the existing building was not large enough.

On December 7, 2007, the African American Cultural Center, which announced earlier this year that their new facility would be named after Harvey Gantt, officially named the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African American Arts and Culture. This was later changed to Harvey B. Gentt Center for African American Arts + Culture.

Frelon, later named the lead architect for the National Museum of African American History and Culture, designed the new building. Even though the site was very narrow, Frelon saw how designing a building in this space was a challenge.

Following the decision to move the African American Cultural Center to the new Harvey Gantt Center, those interested in historical preservation wanted to make sure the old church remained in place. In 2008, Little Rock Church already asked to rent its old home. In April 2009, Little Rock paid $ 590,000 to buy out the old building, which was rebuilt on December 13, 2009 as the Little Rock Community Development Center.

The Gantt Center was the first part of the Wells Fargo Cultural Campus (formerly Vachovia) to be completed. It had four times the space on a small rock.

Gitt Center initiation ceremonies worth $ 18.6 millionDoll. USA on Trion and Stonewall Streets took place on October 24, 2009. Mayor Pat McCrory, who was about to leave office, told Gant, “Former mayor of former mayor, you were a great role model. You are the best of Charlotte, and I am delighted to see your name in this building. Gant said, “This beautiful, stunning building is far beyond my wildest dreams. I feel good that this magnificent building is – how far we have come. ”

The Harvey B. Gantt Center was featured at the Google Cultural Institute Gallery in February 2016, dedicated to black history, art and culture. The center was part of 50 cultural institutions, 80 curated exhibits, and over 500 videos, images and gallery articles.

Gantt Center with an area of 46,500 sq. Ft is located in the heart of Charlotte’s business district in what was once the Brooklyn Historic District, once a thriving center for the black community that was destroyed in the 1960s.

The Gantt Center is inspired by the Myers Street School, which was located in the heart of Brooklyn’s Old Town. The biblical term “Jacob’s Ladder” was used to refer to the school and referred to its prominent external configuration of the ladder. The stairs signified pride and the importance of education in advancing African Americans. This concept of hope, advancement and enlightenment through cultural awareness and education is expressed in the design of the Gantt Center through its modern interpretation of Jacob’s Ladder. Stairs and escalators carry visitors to the second floor main lobby at either end of the building, flanking a central glass atrium. The striking visual impact is a direct allusion to Jacob’s original ladder and perpetuates the ideals of enlightenment and progress through education.

The leather of the building uses patterns reminiscent of underground railroad-era patchwork designs and woven textile patterns from West Africa. These architectural references to African and African American history and culture highlight the building’s theme, creating an innovative and inspiring façade.

Collection:
Vivian Hewitt was the first African American librarian employed by the Carnegie Library in Pittsburgh, and she taught and served as a librarian at the University of Atlanta. Her husband John taught English at Morehouse College. John and Vivian Hewitt, while not wealthy, amassed one of the most significant collections of African American art during their 50-year marriage, beginning in 1949. Works of art have been gifted to each other over the years. The works were available to them at the time they were buying them because white people were not buying them, but as the importance of African American artists became clear, this began to change. The Hewitt Collection was acquired by the National Bank (later Bank of America) in 1998, and the plan was to find work at an expanded African American cultural center. The collection toured the country and 58 works now make up the majority of the Gantt Center’s permanent collection. African American artists of the 20th century include Henry Ossawa Tanner, Anne Tanksley, John Biggers, Elizabeth Catlett, and Romare Bearden.

Hewitt’s African American Collection consists of works by renowned artists, including Romare Bearden, considered one of the greatest American artists of his generation; Henry Ossawa Tanner, one of the first African American artists to achieve recognition in America and Europe; Elizabeth Catlett; Jonathan Green; Jacob Lawrence; Ann Tansley; and Hale Woodruff.Bank of America acquired the Hewitt Collection in 1998 from John and Vivian Hewitt and promised it as the cornerstone of the Gantt Center’s permanent collection.

Dedicated Collectors, despite his financial constraints (John was a freelance writer and Vivian was a librarian), through his 50 years of collecting, Hewits became a close friend with many artists. By the 1970s, they were opening their home to showcase the work of Hale Woodruff, Ernest Crichlow, Alvin Hollingsworth, and J.Eugene Grigsby, Mrs. Hewitt’s cousin.

The Hewits were newlyweds when they bought their first piece of art, a Picasso reproduction. In 1960, they acquired their first original painting while on vacation in Haiti and added one painting at a time to it, celebrating special events in their life with art. “Our collection … until 1960 it will be called eclectic,” said Vivian. “John decided we needed to be more focused. For 15 years we focused on Haitian art (later), my husband said, “We know most of these African American artists. We’d better go back and collect some of our own culture while we can afford it. ”

Vivian’s cousin, J. Eugene Grigsby, artist and internationally renowned art educator, who also introduced the couple to numerous artists, many of whom wrote personal inscriptions or notes on purchased pairs, adding value in both monetary and sentimental form. For 10 years, Hewitt’s collection toured the United States. The Gantt Center is delighted to serve as its home.

The Hewitt African American Collection is a collection of fifty-eight works that celebrate the expression and passion of twenty artists, including Romare Bearden, Margaret Burroughs, Jonathan Green, Jacob Lawrence, Elizabeth Catlett and Henry Ossawa Tanner.

Shortly before the opening of the Gentt Center in October 2009, 26 works by 20 artists appeared in the center. Other works from the collection were to appear in the gallery dedicated to the collection within two years.

To reach visitors outside the museum, Hewitt’s Collection of African American Art, the cornerstone of the Harvey B.Ganta is now available online. The John and Vivian Hewitt Collection is a labor of love, created by two avid collectors over a fifty-year period. Even on modest means, Mrs. Hewitt was a librarian, and Mr. Hewitt was a medical journalist and freelance writer, Hewitt’s shared passion for collecting led them to collect a unique collection of art. The collection, bought by Bank of America and pledged to the Gantt Center in 1998, includes fifty-eight 2D artwork from twenty artists.

90,000 Draft 2013 could be historic | National Hockey League

NEW ARC – No one can say yet if Portland Winterhawks defender Seth Jones will be the first African-American in NHL history to be selected No. 1 in an upcoming draft. But this assumption has already generated a lot of interest in the hockey world.

The draft will take place on Monday morning Moscow time.

“The fact that Seth could be the first draft pick shows what a change has come and is good for hockey,” said Montreal Canadians defender PK Subban, who won the Norris Prize this year. “It’s not good for me, it’s good for hockey. But above all, I want to be seen as an outstanding player, not a black hockey player. This is how I see my career.I want to be a better player. ”

Colorado Avalanche Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Joe Sakik has already stated that if his club retains the right to pick first, then his team will opt for one of the leading attackers in the draft : Nathan McKinnone, Halifax Mooseheads’ Jonathan Drouenne or Finland’s Alexandre Barkove

Jones knows any of these players can be # 1. what he already believes.

“Draft means a lot to me, but neither my family nor I ever saw it as a competition between blacks and whites,” Jones said. “Being 1st is great. I understand why the draft means so much in the world. But I never took it from a different perspective.”

Jones may become the 7th US NBA Draft pick and number 1 behind Patrick Kane, who was drafted in 2007. In addition, he has the ability to draft higher than any other black hockey player in the history of this event, which is held 51 times. So far, the palm in this category belongs to Evander Kane, whom the Atlanta Thrashers chose in 2009 at number 4.

Will Jones be upset if he doesn’t come first?

“This is going to be an entertaining story for everyone. At one point, it seemed like everything was heading for it. Joe and Pat (Roy) know what they are doing,” Jones said. “If they think it will help their team, then that is their right.”

He smiled when asked if he considered himself a role model for young African Americans.

“It’s good to be in this category” – overall (198 cm, 102 kg) defender. “When you manage to captivate someone with hockey, it’s a good deed.”

These words are music to Lester Prize winner Patrick Willie O’Ree, the first black NHL player to join the Boston Bruins in 1958, 11 years after Jackie Robinson’s debut.

“It means a lot,” O’Ree told NHL.com about the possibility of Jones being the 1st draft pick. “It means a lot to the league. This is a black guy who just wanted to play hockey, set a goal, worked hard. He’s kind of saying, look at me, I’m going to get my best in hockey. “

Stanley Cup defender Johnny Oduya of the Chicago Blackhawks hopes that one day someone’s skin color will stop being a topic of conversation.

” I hope the day will come when we won’t even talk about (that a black player can be the best in the draft), “says Oduya.” For me, this is a common situation that is not even worth a damn. But until that day comes, so if it is spoken of in a positive tone, then it’s good. ”

Jones is one of the minority hockey players in this year’s draft, which includes defender Darnell Nurse (Salt St. Marie) right winger Justin Bailey (Kitchener Rangers), defender Jordan Subban (Bellville Bulls), right winger Nicholas Baptist (Sudbury Wolfs), defender Madison Bowie (Kelowna Rockets Vikings), defender Jonatabil Ismael Tigers “) and left wing Anthony Duclaye (Quebec Remparts).

Jones finished his first season with Portland with 14 goals, 56 points, a +56 utility in 61 regular season games. The NHL’s Central Scout Bureau (CSB) ranked him number one among the youngest players in the draft.

Nurse, Subban and Bailey told NHL.com that they would be thrilled to see Jones in the top pick.

“Hockey is probably the only sport in North America where there are not many African Americans. But I believe that more children are starting to play it now and they are becoming role models,” says Bailey.“It doesn’t matter if Seth Jones is first, second or third. He’s going to be a great player, he’s going to be emulated and more minority kids are playing hockey.”

Bailey has scored 17 goals and 36 points in 57 games in his debut season for the Rangers. It ranks 38th in the CSB ranking.

Subban’s older brother, P-Kei Subben, won the Norris Prize for the NHL’s best defender. Jordan Subban is ranked 55th in the CSB rankings. He has spent two seasons with the Bulls and is now sixth in the Ontario League full-back (15 + 36 = 51 in 68 games). In the first season (2011/12) he had 20 points.

“Seth has a chance to be the first. It’s great, we see how this sport is developing, more players from different nationalities are appearing in it and they are achieving success,” said Jordan Subban. “It helps hockey develop.”

Nurse is the second in the rankings of defenders after Jones and is ranked 4th in the CSB rankings. He set a personal best this season with 12 goals, 29 assists, 41 points, +15 utility and 116 penalty minutes.

How does he feel about the significance of Jones’ number in the draft?

“It matters,” Nurse says. “Every kid has someone he looks up to. When I was young, I watched Jerome Iginla how he worked. It’s great that Seth can be number one, it can affect other minority kids who might want to. take up hockey. Not only black guys, but others as well. ”

90,000 No-First-Use Policy: No Reason for Panic

After Barack Obama was the first to announce the American No-Use Policy, Washington’s security assurances began to be questioned across Asia.Tokyo and Seoul are considering developing their own nuclear weapons. Beijing has felt a surge of courage to pursue its territorial claims more aggressively. The same goes for Pyongyang and its nuclear program.

This is the scenario that my colleague Raymond José G. Kilop outlined in the first round. Parris Chang expressed a limited version of the same point of view. In my opinion, there is no reason to fear such a scenario.

First of all, all countries are bound by international obligations, and the leaders of the world powers make calculations on strategic security based on a certain level of trust, hoping that other states will keep their promises. As for Washington, its credibility has a solid foundation. The United States has a long track record of keeping its promises. This is partly why Washington has taken center stage in international relations since World War II. Finding a reason to accuse the United States of being an unreliable partner is very difficult.

So what conclusion about the credibility of the United States can Washington’s allies in East Asia draw if President Obama is the first to declare a non-nuclear policy? Will they have doubts about the American system of extended nuclear deterrence if this deterrence no longer includes the possibility of a first nuclear strike? You can rest assured that countries like South Korea and Japan are not so naive as to place all their security bets on the US’s right to launch the first nuclear strike. All that matters to them is that Washington complies with bilateral and multilateral agreements, and that, if necessary, the United States is ready to take immediate action. The no-first-use policy will in no way affect Washington’s commitment to protecting its allies. Nor will it affect Washington’s nuclear umbrella, the power of its traditional weapons, or its use of its international authority.

America’s no-first-use policy will also give Beijing no reason to be more aggressive. Now, despite the uncertainty of the American doctrine of using nuclear weapons first, China is already behaving quite confidently in Northeast Asia and the South China Sea. Beijing clearly does not see the possibility of a US first strike as a deterrent. Why, then, do some believe that eliminating such an opportunity will give China an excuse to behave even more aggressively? Beijing will gain nothing by positioning itself as an even greater threat to the United States, Washington’s Asian allies, and East Asian security in general. There is no prerequisite for Beijing to prefer an antagonistic response to the US announcement of a non-use of nuclear weapons first.

The situation with Pyongyang looks about the same. North Korea’s provocations in recent years have had little to do with US nuclear deterrence policies. On the contrary, the concept of American containment has so far proved to be a complete failure in the sense that it has not prevented North Korea from developing and testing nuclear weapons. In other words, North Korean leaders are not afraid of US nuclear deterrence. If Pyongyang decides to act more aggressively, it certainly has all the means to do so. But the fact is that an aggressive response to the United States’ announcement of its choice of non-nuclear weapons will not benefit the North Koreans.

On the contrary, the American policy of non-use of nuclear weapons can be the first to demonstrate to Pyongyang that the United States does not intend to overthrow the North Korean regime (and this is the main cause for concern of the North Korean leaders). But even if North Korean leaders do not fully believe the US policy of not using nuclear weapons first, at least this policy can reduce the degree of pressure that is forcing North Korean leaders to strive to maximize their nuclear readiness. The same can be said for the leaders of China.

In short, none of the players in East or Southeast Asia will benefit from abusing America’s no-first-use policy. Moreover, the countries of the region will perceive this policy as favorable, because if Washington declares itself to be a force maintaining the status quo in Asian nuclear affairs, then the entire region will become more secure. No one in East or Southeast Asia has sufficient reason to muddy the already murky waters of the regional political environment.

90,000 Rebirth of capitalism: how a pandemic is destroying the existing system, changing it for the better

For many, the absurd year 2020 has become a solid groundhog day.Time drags on four times slower than usual, and from the virtual shelves of online stores, buyers sweep away everything that helped kill boredom and was necessary on the farm in the last century – from puzzles to yeast. Oddly enough, at the same time, the world is transforming at an incredible speed, which has not been observed since the Second World War. In a matter of weeks, there have been radical, irreversible changes in the way we work, learn, and spend money. The most important changes concern the very core of our economic system.

Capitalism, the greatest engine for prosperity and innovation, was not in top shape even before the pandemic hit. Despite a decade of impressive economic growth and job creation, many Americans still felt that the system had been hacked and that hard work and playing by the rules were no longer the key to success. “It’s scary to realize this when unemployment in general is at its lowest level, unemployment among the African-American population, among Hispanics and among women,” explains financier Michael Milken, who knows firsthand about the economic processes of this time.”So people felt that something was wrong.”

The evolution of capitalism. Could we have new billionaires?

Advertising on Forbes

And these moods only intensified in the spring, especially among young people. In late February, the last week before the COVID-19 era, Forbes surveyed 1,000 American adults under the age of 30 about their attitudes toward capitalism and socialism. Half supported the former, while 43% supported the latter.Ten weeks later, 80,000 deaths and 20 million jobless claims, we re-conducted the survey. It turned out that in the current and already depressing situation, the leaders of the poll have changed: 47% now speak positively about socialism, and 46% about capitalism. Changes in public sentiment have shifted to the public field, and ideas such as unconditional basic income, rental amnesty and guarantees from employers are rapidly leaving the periphery and becoming topics of general discussion.

Amid today’s confusion and bewildering paradigm shift, another fundamental shift is taking place – the invisible hand of the market is manipulating itself with great dexterity.

As one of the fathers of capitalism, Joseph Schumpeter, would have said, to create a new system it is necessary to destroy the old one. Therefore, another victim of the coronavirus can be considered the legacy of Milton Friedman, the founder of modern economics. By now, it has already lived out its age. Even conservatives at the Business Roundtable, an association of American CEOs, said last summer that they no longer embraced Friedman’s first dogma of shareholder primacy. You can see that this approach is a thing of the past by looking at any grocery store or UPS express delivery truck. These low-wage heroes used to be called “unskilled workers,” but now they are treated with respect as irreplaceable employees. CEOs who are pushing for the lowest wage rates and thus striving to maintain quarterly dividends can now only be pitied.

CEOs of the largest US companies urged not to consider profit as the main goal

The strategy that remained from the last economic collapse, according to which strategic enterprises are considered paramount, turned out to be outdated. In the 2010s, new economic activity from crowdfunding to cryptocurrencies has been on the rise, but with the pandemic hitting businesses like restaurants and hair salons especially hard, many have already sharpened their pitchforks. Shake Shack founder Danny Mayer has never taken a fancy to Milton Friedman’s views, and his clients, employees, neighbors and investors adore him for the most part. Yet when his large, open-source, stock-traded burger empire had the temerity to take out a loan under the Paycheck Protection Program, passions ran high enough to easily fry eggs.Mayer was forced to return the money to the government.

Finally, the era of progressive economic development has ended. Slow and minor improvements no longer work, and now just “good” is not enough. Times call for more sophisticated system solutions than before. We need advanced capitalism.

Michael Milken (Paul Miller / Bloomberg via Getty Images)

And if Friedman put profit at the forefront, then in advanced capitalism the most important thing is return on investment in all its aspects.Yes, this includes a huge sector of the state’s economic activity, which has been steadily moving forward over the past few years. And the main stakeholders here are not large corporations, but small businesses that simply want fair business opportunities and a level playing field for every market player. When properly applied, advanced capitalism will foster activities that aim at smart, long-term solutions that increase business performance on an ongoing basis.

Everything that has happened over the past few weeks can be expressed in three dual formulas according to the principle “one is more important than the other.” The story unfolds before our eyes.

Part I. Equal opportunity is more important than equal results

The virus has brought to the fore the more serious contradictions plaguing America, where people of color suffer disproportionately higher mortality, morbidity and unemployment. By the time the pandemic began, the richest African American, self-made Robert Smith, whose fortune is estimated at $ 5 billion, was already working to expand opportunities for black youth. Most of all, the world remembered his parting speech at Morehouse College in Georgia, when a businessman announced to the 2019 graduates about the full payment of their debts for their studies. Observing the provision of primary care to businesses under the payroll protection program was extremely frustrating for Smith, as the first tranche of $ 350 billion in April was snapped up in a matter of days by large companies with good connections and rich experience.

For three weeks ahead of the second tranche, Smith tried to find possible solutions. The problem was that the funds for the pay protection program were transferred through the electronic system of the Office of Small Business Affairs, to which only large banks have access. “In 70% of African American neighborhoods, there are no banks at all,” Smith says. And even if there were, then 90% of black business belongs to the field of individual entrepreneurship and has no close ties with banks. So large companies made their way to the front of the line.

So Smith reached out to organizations that provide small entrepreneurs with access to finance – credit cooperatives, small depository institutions, and over 1,000 local development banks. The businessman put them in touch with larger companies with access to the Small Business Administration clearinghouse. Smith hired one of his fintech companies, Finastra, to develop the solution, and then sent out information to 30,000 National Association of Black Churches ministers that they now also had access to financial aid. During the second tranche in May, about 90,000 loans were disbursed in this way.

Yet not every problem has a billionaire altruist willing to end it, so many Americans, especially millennials and Gen Z, have become disillusioned with 21st century capitalism.Since the existing system does not provide equal opportunities for achieving success, promises of equal results will prevail. The younger generation wants to feel that America is indeed a land of opportunity, but to do so, the root causes of inequality must be addressed immediately.

It all starts with the education system. Going to college was once a ticket to a higher position in society and was an almost sure-fire way to get to the upper middle class. Compare, for example, today’s debt-ridden and justifiably cynical college graduates with the heroes of the Great Generation who grew up during the Great Depression and returned from World War II – the latter were the most successful generation of Americans, thanks in large part to the Military Rights Act of 1944.Schools have suddenly started offering students work opportunities again as tuition fees. This is especially noticeable in Michigan, where Gov. Gretchen Whitmer launched an initiative called Futures for Front-Liners, which offers full state tuition fees for those who are pandemic participated in the life support of the population.

Be that as it may, the invisible hand of the market does its job even without the intervention of the authorities.College students have always been able to take advantage of guaranteed loans, and therefore, for a century, schools have had little incentive to revise their pricing policy. However, due to the fact that in a short time education became a common property, the process can no longer be stopped. “A lot can be changed that way,” emphasizes Michael Milken. “Is it obligatory today to pay $ 50,000 a year for quality education?”

Answer: no. For the first time in a generation, the higher education sector will experience market pressures and incentives to provide better services at lower prices.Kerry Healy, former rector of Babson College in Massachusetts who now runs the Milken Institute’s Center for Advancement of the American Dream, believes that “the traditional economic model in education is living its days,” and predicts that a quarter of small colleges will become part of larger or even will close. Such processes are absolutely normal and have been brewing for a long time. The institutions that remain afloat will have to become the first step on the path to the American dream, that is, to give students a degree without driving them into big debts, and to provide an opportunity to get a specialty with a backlog for the future, not only for 18-year-olds, but also for anyone who wants to.

Uberizing everything: how new technologies will change the state and capitalism

Similar dynamics are observed in another sector of the American economy, bloated to an incredible size – in the healthcare sector. As in the case of online education, telemedicine, too, literally in a few weeks moved from the category of a theory of the future to everyday reality. The positive experience is immediately widespread, and the results are predetermined in advance: greater patient coverage and lower cost of care.If there is not a simple paradigm shift, but a paradigm break, then the middle class in America will have one less headache.

The key to overcoming the coronavirus crisis is the constant implementation of such mechanisms to level the playing field for all market participants. This is precisely the goal Smith pursues, whose efforts are supported by such unexpected allies as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Ivanka Trump. In this way, the billionaire is trying to make the algorithm developed by his company part of a simple system for issuing loans to businesses. According to Smith, in this environment, large banks, as a prerequisite for participation in Small Business Administration programs, will continue to act as a service channel for financial institutions working with individuals who do not have sufficient access to banking products, whether they are urban or countryside. Thanks to a single set of software tools, the whole process will become extremely simple.By grouping small loans for secondary markets (which tend to have more stable payments than others), banks will gain a new line of business, and small borrowers will have access to a huge amount of new capital. “The return on investment in this model is extremely high,” says Smith. “And you can launch a whole ecosystem of lending for small and medium-sized businesses.”

Despite this, the billionaire’s ambitions go even further. He seeks to make the new American dream come true, which will become possible with the software package on the principle of “business in a box” and, for example, for $ 50 a month will make entrepreneurial activity much easier: the client will be provided with services for processing and transferring wages, making payments , scheduling payments, withholding funds and other equally daunting transactions. On top of that, this tool will automatically provide the bank with a transparent mechanism for assessing the stability of the business when issuing a loan.

How long will it take before such an integrated lending model becomes a full-fledged and permanent part of the financial system? Smith himself suggests that it will take “nine months.”

What would have been the time frame if we hadn’t been in a crisis? After a short silence, the billionaire grins: “Who knows?”

Part II.Stakeholders are more important than shareholders

Beginning in March, when workers in New York enterprises were sent home, the CEO of telecom giant Verizon, Hans Westberg, began to collect emergency online meetings every morning at 8 o’clock. “Decisions are now being made with incredible speed,” he notes, adding that at least twice a day he has to make calls that will judge his merits in five years. From the outset, his team of 10 people decided to look at each issue through a four-pronged lens in a strict sequence: employees, customers, the public and the latter – both in order and in importance – shareholders.

“Now we need to be clear about the landmarks,” emphasizes Westberg.

What does stakeholder capitalism look like at Verizon? Of the 145,000 employees, the head of the corporation did not fire a single person. Workers in hazardous conditions have received higher wages, and those who have contracted the coronavirus are entitled to 26 weeks of paid sick leave. 120,000 home-based subordinates — many of them usually busy with tasks that are not currently available — are assigned to corporate-wide projects or volunteer for Verizon. The purpose of such events is not to make money. Taking steps like this in this challenging time is meant to give people a sense of belonging to something greater.

For Westberg, employees are the same as for an elected politician – his voters. The head of the company interviews subordinates every two weeks to determine their effectiveness and identify areas that still need to be worked on. He also maintains transparency and starts a press conference every day at sharp noon, such as the one regularly held by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.”We have nothing to hide, neither in what we do, nor in business processes,” emphasizes Westberg. He quickly expanded his audience, and now it includes not only employees, but also clients, commercial organizations, analysts from Wall Street, anyone can watch his live broadcasts on Twitter and ask questions of interest. Typically, these “briefings” are followed by more than 50,000 users.

On the customer side, Verizon has pledged not yet to terminate contracts with those unable to pay.In an environment where communication with people is as important as electricity, this is the right decision. And for a company that has always been valued by many customers, this step is very reasonable. According to Westberg, “once you cut off contact with them, they will never come back.” As part of charitable initiatives, the corporation has provided all American high school students with a free subscription to The New York Times, provided communications and gadgets for children in 350 schools, and hosts free Pay It Forward concerts weekly.”Pay Another”) featuring artists like Billie Eilish and Chance the Rapper.

Shareholders? Wall Street seems to have come to terms with its place in the operator’s priority queue. “We have not received any objections yet,” Vestberg admits. At least analysts should be reassured by one piece of news. Verizon took first place in the Forbes debut rating of corporations showing conscientiousness in times of crisis. When compiling the list published the other day, the data of the non-profit research organization JUST Capital was taken as a basis on 22 different criteria: from client protection to emergency assistance for supporting dependents.

Of course, it is much easier for a highly profitable tech company like Verizon to do something for the good of society. However, among the first 25 participants in this rating were also low-income retailers such as the Dollar General, Walmart and Target hypermarket chains. The latter took an honorable second place: the company increased the working rate of employees on the “front line” by $ 2 per hour, made it possible to go to a paid sick leave so that the staff did not show up at the workplace with symptoms of illness, provides support to employees with children and elderly relatives, and increased the volume of the fund helping workers in financial difficulties.

If you get the impression that the focus is now on employees, then so be it. This is what the Americans want. As a direct participant in the work on the rating of the most socially responsible companies, a Forbes partner, the research company JUST Capital, surveyed more than 100,000 Americans about what they mean by the concept of a conscious company. The responses were overwhelmingly similar: the attractiveness of an organization is determined by how much it pays its own employees and how it treats them.

In this new advanced capitalism, treating workers well is not at odds with business interests. It simply means that subordinates are being respected. A few weeks ago, Airbnb founder Brian Chesky did something unimaginable: he laid off nearly 1,900 employees, or 25% of the entire staff, and got applause for it. Yes, he released them with a very generous reward: severance pay for 14 weeks, an increased package of securities, an Apple laptop and a guarantee of payment for medical care for a whole year.Empathy was key for Chesky, however. He explained that he was simply forced to cut staff, so he treated his former colleagues not as corporate ballast, but as real friends. The head of the company instructed the HR department to look for new jobs for the laid-off employees and created a public database that tells about the merits of each of his former employees. “In my decision, I started from the principles, not from the needs of the business, – explains Chesky Forbes.”The goal of decisions based on corporate interests is the highest possible profit, while decisions on the principles of integrity are made without reference to financial performance.”

Advertising on Forbes

Albert Burla, who is considered by many to be one of the most influential CEOs in America today, adheres to similar principles. The head of Pfizer pledged to develop a vaccine for widespread use among vulnerable groups this year and intends to refute the usual predictions that the drug may be ready in only a year and a half.

How Pfizer is going to save the world and be the first to create a vaccine against coronavirus, spending $ 1 billion

Thus Burla takes two risks at once. First, this is the allocation of $ 1 billion for the creation of just one drug, which in the end may turn out to be ineffective at all. “Speed was our top priority, and it had nothing to do with return on investment or development cost, because it all came down to rounding errors,” Burla notes.”The most important thing for us is to create a vaccine.”

Secondly, the CEO of a corporation is risking his own reputation, because it is more likely that he promises too much and will not be able to achieve what he wants in full than if the opposite happens. “Our contribution to resolving the current crisis should be the driving force for all possible initiatives,” the top manager shrugs. – It is now vital to establish open and fast communication between all stakeholders. Other vaccine makers could learn from our experience. ”

The crisis develops according to two scenarios: either sows discord in society, or makes people kinder. The Greek-born Burla is no doubt aiming for the latter. Pfizer is working on an ambitious project in partnership with BioNTech, run by the Turk, Ugur Sahin. And although their countries do not like each other very much, the managers have already agreed that, as soon as the vaccine is developed, they will have a glass of brandy together. “We have only one enemy – the virus and time,” says the head of Prizer.

“Even in my dreams I could not imagine such growth”: what kind of business is booming during a pandemic

Part III. Decisions today are more important than decisions tomorrow

With the onset of the pandemic, Ray Dalio, founder of America’s largest and most pragmatic hedge fund Bridgewater Associates, noticed one characteristic thing: when schoolchildren in his native Connecticut were sent home and transferred to distance learning, children from low-income families became lag behind even further. Many of them lack food and live in cramped quarters where they have no personal space and where they are more likely to be infected. In addition, 22% did not have any home computer, let alone a personal computer, as well as a reliable Internet connection.

“I saw a real tragedy,” says Dalio. – And many people said the same thing: “It shouldn’t be this way.”

With the help of Dalio, who donated $ 100 million, the Connecticut administration, which donated the same amount, Bill Gates, Michael Dell and senior state and educational officials of the state, students from disadvantaged families received 60,000 fully equipped computers for classes.

For Dalio, whose fortune, according to Forbes, reaches $ 18 billion, such a decision was obvious – why not a reference example of investment in the future within the framework of advanced capitalism? It is also an omen of the way in which charity is developing now.

“The world has gone crazy with easy money”: billionaire Ray Dalio said that capitalism no longer works

This area has been actively criticized in recent years by a separate group of the American intelligentsia, demanding extortionate tax rates for billionaires to prevent them huge impact on society. This kind of economic policy does not seem to work. Most billionaires are already in favor of raising taxes regardless of the winner of the upcoming 2020 presidential election, and high rates are more likely to stifle economic growth than generate income for the state.

The effectiveness of such measures is also questionable in the public sector. Democracy itself is not very much governed by long-term planning. For example, providing for a prisoner in prison – from the point of view of finances and especially the welfare of society – is many times more expensive than providing him with education and development opportunities. But trying to convince politicians to invest in transformations that will bear fruit only after 20 years is simply useless, because they need the end result right here and now. Charities can serve as a kind of venture capital in solving problems, prove the effectiveness of various concepts, and also make mistakes that the government does not dare to make.

However, charity in its current form has become the subject of general discussion for a reason. Despite huge subsidies in the form of preliminary tax holidays, charitable foundations constantly hold about $ 4 trillion, and they are not used to systematically address today’s difficulties, but are waiting in the wings for tomorrow’s resolution.Charitable foundations are required by law to float at least 5% of their assets annually. But for most of these organizations, 5% is not so much the lowest mark as the ceiling of opportunity. Meanwhile, the owners of 730,000 accounts in fashionable donor funds managed to knock out the same tax holidays for themselves without any annual minimum whatsoever.

The pandemic only made the situation worse. Never before in our lifetime has society needed benefactors so badly. However, the scale of charitable activities is also declining due to the decline in income following the downturn in the entire market.

Forbes Top Hundred Billionaire announced the death of capitalism

Therefore, taking advantage of the moment, key players are now trying to transform charity with an emphasis on transparency of processes and the philosophy of “do good while alive”. The 43-year-old founder of Twitter and payments platform Square Jack Dorsey, who recently made headlines when he pledged $ 1 billion to fight the coronavirus crisis and its aftermath, is a case in point. At the same time, he enters data on each donation into a special Google Doc document with public access.

In May, a group of more than 275 philanthropists and entrepreneurs, led by the $ 100 million Wallace Global Fund, called on Congress to double the required minimum spending by charities and donor funds over the next three years to 10%. Thus, the initiative will be able to use an additional $ 200 billion. “This is not done in order to make history through their donations,” says Abigail Disney, one of the signatories to the appeal.”The main thing is to give the world what it needs so much now, and not to remain in the memory of people.”

Meanwhile, according to various internal sources, many signatories to the “Oath of Giving” are actively discussing the question of whether it is worth moving away from the inherent uncertainty about the timing and purpose of donations (the conditions for donating at least half of their fortune to charity during life or after deaths remain the same). Potential options include creating an emergency pooled fund to tackle COVID-19 and promoting a “do good while alive” ethic. No specific decisions have been made yet.

The stakes are now higher than ever. In conditions of economic chaos, various marginal segments of the population are becoming more active. Thus, during the Great Depression, there was a flourishing of the ideology of communism, isolationism and national superiority – and all this long before the era of social networks. Anyway, ten years after the end of the Great Depression, American business became the envy of the rest of the world, and workers in American enterprises achieved a quality of life that their parents and grandfathers could only dream of.

The United States is now at a similar crossroads: one road leads to advanced capitalism, the other leads to further societal decline and the sobering realization that it was all for nothing. “One way or another, a revolution awaits us. Either there will be a complete collapse, or we will do everything meaningfully and together, ”concludes Dalio.

America That Israel and Palestine Need by Mohamed ElBaradei

VIENNA – For generations of Arab youth, including my own, studying and working in the United States has been a highly coveted chance to experience the freedom, perspective, and sense of equality that the American way of life has embodied. The experience was doubly enriching for those of us who grew up in authoritarian or conservative societies. It was amazing to be able to think and act independently, without social pressure. I was thrilled at the prospect of returning home with the lessons I learned from a functioning democracy, including the key role of free speech, the importance of civil society, and the incredible benefits of empowering people.

Of course, I was also aware of the failures of the American system, especially deep-seated racism and inequality.I remember the Jim Crow laws that perpetuated racial segregation in the former Confederate states, and the assassination of Martin Luther King, who articulated African American dreams of equality and human dignity. But I hoped America’s democratic system had the necessary tools to fix itself. And I keep these hopes, because I personally saw profound changes in values, laws and mentality.

But what shocked me the most was that America, which is so proud of its love of freedom and justice, has too often pursued a hegemonic and repressive foreign policy, from the horrific wars in Vietnam and Iraq to the backing of ruthless dictators.Whatever its reasons, this gap between how America presents itself and the kind of foreign policy it pursues has reinforced the ambiguous perception of the United States in the Arab world and the rest of the world. Although many young Arabs wanted to become American citizens, almost all of them hated American foreign policy.

Arabs and Muslims regarded the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as the number one argument against America. They could hardly understand why a sense of empathy for the Jewish people (fully justified given the horrific atrocities that were committed against them) should lead to injustice towards the Palestinians.Over time, this US bias in favor of Israel became a consensus in American politics; for many lawmakers, supporting Israel is synonymous with fighting anti-Semitism.

Even more dangerous was the religious aspect of this conflict, which exacerbated the slow rift between the Muslim and Western worlds. Relations have deteriorated further due to US-sponsored wars in the Middle East and hit rock bottom after President Donald Trump imposed a Muslim travel ban and after his “Deal of the Century” designed to bring peace to the region. In reality, this proposal by the Palestinians only deepened mistrust, as it turned out to be much worse than any proposals made earlier.

The latest outbreak of Israeli-Palestinian violence has once again exacerbated deep-seated feelings of humiliation and anger felt not only by Palestinians in the occupied territories, but also by Israeli Arabs and residents of the Arab and Muslim world. For the first time in a long time, there was overwhelming popular support for Palestinian rights around the world, especially among young people.

It was hoped by many that the administration of US President Joe Biden would make the promotion of democracy and human rights central to its foreign policy. But those hopes were quickly dashed when the US government simply repeated the familiar mantra that “Israel has the right to self-defense,” without mentioning the elephant in the room: the creeping expansion of Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, as well as Israel’s policies of discrimination and denial of the Palestinian right to an independent state.

For me personally, this was deeply depressing. Over the course of five decades, I have seen US approaches to defending Palestinian rights become almost apologetic. And today, in bewilderment, I observe how the Jewish people, who suffered so much and for so long, were able to inflict the same terrible suffering on another people that they had previously inflicted on themselves.

The US is throwing money around trying to prevent further violence in the Gaza Strip, but they are not making any effort to address the underlying causes. In the Arab and Muslim world, there is a growing desire for an active struggle against the Israeli occupation, and extremism is on the rise. When I think about all of this and the 67 children who lost their lives in the recent outbreak of violence, there is no way I can shake off an almost overwhelming sense of despair.

Nevertheless, I see a ray of hope and a growing awareness that a return to the former status quo and the vicious circle of violence is not possible. I see the beginning of attempts to reassess values within Israel, among the Palestinians and in the Arab world in order to find new ways forward, based on the principles of coexistence and mutual recognition.

I have worked closely with the Israelis and Palestinians and have seen all sides make serious mistakes over the decades in managing the Middle East conflict.Nevertheless, I still hope that the United States will seize this opportunity and with all its weight will begin to equally apply to the Palestinians and Israelis the principle of the rule of law, which America considers sacred (and the importance of which I learned as a student at New York University School of Law) …

A more impartial US approach would help the Palestinians, Israel, the region and the world. If Biden manages to make the necessary shift in American foreign policy, then America will indeed return.
