Spouses Ray (1912-1988) and Charles Eames (1907-1978) revolutionized American everyday life. They have designed furniture that has entered the golden foundation of design history.

Chaise lounges, plastic and plywood chairs and armchairs from Eames are timeless classics, forever included in the catalogs of the famous companies Vitra and Herman Miller.

Charles Eames was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and studied architecture at the University. Washington and in the 1930s he worked in various bureaus, which he opened with other colleagues. In 1938 he got an internship at the Crenbrook Academy of Arts.In those years, Krenbrook was a hub of talent and a creative laboratory for architects, sculptors, painters and jewelers.

The training took place in the form of master classes, the rector of the academy was the famous Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen, one of the visiting professors was Walter Groppius. Here Charles Eames met the son of Eliel Saarinen Eero, Harry Bertoya, the future modernist architect and urban planner Edmund Bacon, the founders of the Knoll brand Florence and Hans Knoll, and Bernice Alexandra Kaiser, who would later become known as Ray Eames. In Krenbrook, he was actively involved in the design of plywood furniture, in 1940, together with Eero Saarinen, Charles Eames participated and won first place in the Organic Design in Home Furnishing competition, organized by the New York Museum of Modern Art, in the same year Charles becomes the head of the Faculty of Industrial Design.

Bernice Alexandra Kaiser, the future Ray Eames, was born in Sacramento, California, before entering the Crenbrook Academy, she studied painting, took lessons from the famous artist Hans Hoffmann and participated in exhibitions of American abstract artists. She graduated from Crenbrook Academy in 1941 and married Charles at the same time. Since then, they have not parted and signed all their works together. After Crenbrook, the couple moved to California, continuing their experiments in molded plywood furniture. Charles also works with the film industry and Ray makes covers for the influential California Arts and Architecture magazine.

Designers are investigating the processes of plywood processing and ways of turning it into a durable material that can take any shape at the same time, even constructing a special machine for molding plywood furniture elements. The success, however, at first, was not furniture, but aircraft parts and biomorphic tires to support the limbs of soldiers wounded in the war – the result of the Eames cooperation with the US Navy. The medical splint created by them in those years turned out to be so beautiful that the Metropolitan Museum took it into its collection, in the classifier it is listed as artwork – “a work of art”.

Acquaintance with military technology went to the benefit of the designers, finally, after long experiments and tests, the production of numerous prototypes, in 1946 they showed their chairs made of molded plywood at an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA), and in 1949 – m at the Herman Miller factory began the industrial production of this furniture.

The first models to a huge success, ECW (Eames Chair Wood, other names: DCW, LCW), with an ergonomically and simultaneously sculpted back and seat made of plywood. The innovation consisted in the fact that the back and seat in these chairs are separated and are not attached to each other, but to the L-shaped curved profile. In 2001, Time magazine declared this first Imso chair as the best design piece of the 20th century.

Soon, similar ones were added to it, but with a frame made of metal tubes, as well as tables, shelves and tables. Eames furniture has transformed not only residential interiors, but also office spaces. When the chic leather Lounge Chair appeared in 1956, it became an indispensable attribute of executive offices. And in combination with a footstool, it is almost an indispensable element of living rooms in upper and middle class houses. “We wanted to create a modern and more comfortable alternative to the classic club chair,” the designers later recalled the history of this model. In November, in honor of the 60th anniversary of the legendary armchair, Vitra released a limited edition “anniversary” version – in black fabric upholstery. January 2017 is the last month of sales of this variant, which promises to become a rarity.

British journalists recently discovered that the discounter chain Aldi is selling fake Eames chairs at £ 40 apiece. Stories like this each time initiate heated discussions about whether quality design should be public or only belong to the high segment.

In the late 1940s and 1950s, the Eames created a number of iconic armchairs and chairs made from durable fiberglass, including the scenic La Chaise armchair that looks like a seashell. Their portfolio included wire mesh chairs and incredibly comfortable leather office chairs and even children’s toys, as well as the popular Hang-It-All coat hanger, which looks like a puzzle toy.

Eames chairs and armchairs are probably the most forged design items in the world. Only two companies in the world have a license to issue them: Herman Miller in America and Vitra in Europe and the Middle East. But there is a whole industry of fakes, offering fakes at prices ten times lower than the originals. In any case, the fact that both segments – originals and fakes – exist on an equal footing and both have their adherents, once again confirms the genius of the design created by Eames: it is universal, fitting equally well into the author’s interiors and into the rooms of students.

The plywood elephant, designed back in the 1940s, existed for a long time in only a few copies, and only in 2007, in honor of the centenary of the birth of Charles Eames, the toy was released in mass circulation in plastic. “A designer should be like a very good and empathetic host, who knows how to anticipate all the needs of his guests,” Charles used to say.

Ray used her artistic skills to design fabrics. The collection she invented for participation in the competition announced by the MoMA Museum in 1947 became a cult one. Geometric ornaments Dot Pattern, Circles, Cross Patch, intricate and at the same time understandable and even somewhat similar to children’s creativity, have changed consumer perception of decorative and upholstery fabrics. Today these fabrics are produced by the Maharam company.

In 1949, a project was carried out in California with support from California Arts and Architecture magazine to develop guidelines for the construction of low-cost private homes. The Eames took part in it and, as a result, they built a house in the Pacific Palisades near Los Angeles that went down in the history of architecture and design as the “Eames House” – they settled in it, embodying their ideas of ideal housing in the interiors and in the construction itself.

In 2006, the house was awarded the status of a National Historic Landmark. The base of the house is two rectangular “boxes” made of steel and glass. One housed a design studio (now the office of the Eames Foundation), the other housed living rooms. The Eames used standard building elements, sliding doors and window frames. The facades, lined with cages of transparent glass and colored asbestos, are similar to Mondrian’s compositions.

The unifying center of the house is a spacious double-height living room filled with light, with wood cladding on the walls and a large number of chairs and armchairs designed by the owners – only their own furniture was used in the interiors of Eames. The rooms of the house are full of souvenirs brought from India, Mexico, Japan, and works of art by the owners’ favorite authors. The creative, very personal and unique atmosphere that the owners did not hesitate to show to numerous guests (and the house was a real Mecca for architects, artists and other art figures of the mid-20th century) has survived to this day, the house can be viewed by signing up for a tour.

In the 1950s, the Eames professionally engaged in the creation of popular science and production short films. For almost 30 years of work, they shot about 125 short films, in some they talked about their own work and life in their home. In 1959, in the midst of the thaw, the Americans brought to Moscow a grand exhibition about the life and achievements of the United States. The famous architect Buckminster Fuller built a huge pavilion with a golden crystal dome in Sokolniki Park. There, at the same time, on seven screens, a slide film about America Glimpses of the USA, shot by the Eames spouses specially for the exhibition, was shown.

Their cooperation with IBM was especially fruitful – Eames filmed films on her order, decorated exhibitions. At the dawn of the computer era, they promoted the role of mathematics, physics and computing in the development of mankind. In 1968, commissioned by IBM, they shot one of their most famous popular science films, Powers of Ten, which clearly demonstrated the infinity of the universe and the microscopic nature of the atoms that make up organisms.
