1. Add a Micro SD card for saving files and documents.
2. Uninstall any program or app that isn’t needed.
3. Please don’t update Windows as the WiFi driver may be lost if you update. This is a software bug in recent Windows updates that causes this issue. How to Choose a Laptop for College

I’ve been breaking computers from a young age. In middle school I tried setting up a dual boot between Windows XP and Ubuntu but I messed it up and corrupted my Windows installation and left myself without a bootloader. After three days at the mercy of How-To Geek and Super User, I finally fixed it. As scary as it was almost breaking our very important computer, I enjoyed fixing it and continued to mess around with it.

I went to a vocational high school to study information technology. There I took computer repair classes to prepare for the CompTIA A+ certfication exam and network management classes for Cisco CCENT certifications. Our school ran out of vouchers to take these exams so I never got certified but I did learn a lot and worked as a computer technician for my school’s technology department senior year. I also started my own computer repair business at home to raise money for college.

Choosing a laptop for college was easy because I knew more about computer specifications than just “bigger numbers means better computer”. I bought a new Lenovo Yoga 11s for $800 and it was as good as the MIT IS&T recommended computers but half the cost. It served me well until this year when my laptop started getting burned in pixels, leaving ghost images on my screen. This happens when you consistently leave your screen on one image for too long. I had a warranty on it that was close to expiring so I took it to Geek Squad at the beginning of July. They gave me an estimated repair time of two weeks.

Five weeks later, I get a phone call from them saying that one of the parts needed for the repair is no longer being sold. So instead they gave me store credit to buy a new laptop. I’m now typing from my brand new Lenovo Yoga 2 which is twice as good as my old laptop and only cost me $100 on top of my store credit.

I’ve gotten a lot of questions from MIT parents about which laptops are good for their kids. I’ve compiled all the advice I’ve ever given on computer purchasing below. I hope it helps you make a more informed decision.

 

Warranties

Most, if not all, laptops come with a manufacturer’s warranty that says they’ll repair your computer if a part is found defective. But manufacturer warranties don’t cover drops, spills, stealings. Check the computer protection plans from your store to see if they’re right for you. I say get a physical plan that protects you from spills, drops, and stealing, especially if you’re going to be carrying your laptop around campus. Some stores, like Best Buy, even give you your money back in store credit for a new laptop if they can’t fix your old one.

But software warranties that cover antivirus scans and backups aren’t necessary. You can easily learn those things yourself. I had to purchase a software warranty when I bought my Yoga 11s two years ago and I never used it.

 

Mac or PC?

The question on everyone’s minds and the answer everybody hates: it depends.

A PC and a Macbook can function exactly the same and the Macbook will still cost extra no matter what just because it’s an Apple product. But since Apple tightly controls their software and hardware, Macbooks are slimmer and lighter than most PC’s. They also feel nicer and sturdier, with an aluminum body and sleek design. PC parts have to be compatible and swappable so those laptops are usually bulkier and heavier.

Macs CAN get viruses, now that hackers are getting more clever and Macs are becoming more common. You still need a good antivirus.

Some software that runs on PC doesn’t run on Mac. People in Course 2 Mechanical Engineering should be aware of this as the modeling software Solidworks only works for PC.

Course 2 advice from Snively’s 2008 post Laptops!:

“If you are going to be a Mechanical Engineer you should avoid a Mac. That’s not to say you can’t have one, but your life will be easier with a PC, the reason being the modeling software you’ll be using (SolidWorks) isn’t compatible with Mac. It was designed specifically for Windows and will likely never be ported. That being said, you can buy a Macbook Pro, dual-boot it with Windows, and then install SolidWorks (again, MIT provides it for free). You’ll need a Pro though, of the three types of Macs only it has the RAM and the graphics to comfortably run modeling software. The air and the Macbook will be really laggy.”

So in the Mac vs PC department, think about what software you might need and which one supports it. After that, judge them by their aesthetics. Then, for everything else, look at their specifications.

 

Now let’s break down computer parts:

CPU

The CPU processes and gives instructions it gets from the code of computer programs. People refer to it as the brain of the computer as a simple analogy, but it’s really more of a powerful central calculator.

Aim for an Intel Core i5 or i7. If you can get the faster but more expensive i7, then that’s good for future proofing, but the i5 works nearly as well. Anything below that is useable but will be outdated soon. If you’re buying a new laptop, get your money’s worth with a good i5 or i7 processor.

Now there’s the Intel Core M in some of the new surface pro tablets. This is a less powerful processor than the i5 but it doesn’t heat up as quickly so it doesn’t need its own fan. This lets your tablet be slimmer and quieter. Pick this option if you’re okay having marginally less performance capabilities in exchange for a slimmer, quieter tablet/laptop. The difference in speeds is usually unnoticeable for everyday tasks.

AMD processors are budget processors. They’re good for the price but Intel’s CPUs are generally more powerful.

 

RAM

RAM is the amount of main memory that computer programs have available to use. A computer with 4GB of RAM means that it has approximately 4 billion bytes of memory for programs to use. But more RAM doesn’t mean your programs will run faster, only that can run more programs at the same time. If you have 4GB and are running an intense program that needs 6GB, then adding more RAM will be helpful as it gives your program more memory to work with. But if you have 4GB and your program only uses 2GB, adding more RAM won’t make it run faster but it will let you run more programs alongside it.

That being said, if you’re buying a new system, you should future proof it and buy as much RAM as you can comfortably afford. As we go through the years, the same old programs need more and more memory to work as they get more complex. This is why a lot of computers today are so slow even though people don’t have many programs installed. It’s just that programs in general require more memory to run today than they did yesterday.

4GB of RAM has been standard for a few years now but mainstream computers have been moving into 8GB territory. Higher end laptops and gaming PC’s are now even using 16GB.

IS&T recommends 8GB. That’s more than enough for doing anything, including SolidWorks and virtualization. As time passes, programs are going to require more RAM, but 8GB now should be enough to get you through four years.

If you have a 4GB laptop already, you can use it but be aware you may need to upgrade in one or two years, especially if you find yourself using intensive programs like the repeatedly mentioned Solidworks. If you’re buying a new laptop, skip the 4GB and go for the 8GB. 16GB is a luxury.

 

Hard Drive

Hard drives are what store your data. Inside hard drives are disks. To read data, physical motors spin the disks under magnetic read/write heads. Having these physical parts moving inside the hard drive is what limits their speed and makes them break more commonly than other parts.

Then come the SSD’s. Solid state drives. These hard drives have no moving parts. Instead, they use electronic circuity built out of semiconductors to store data. This makes them more resistant to physical shock and faster than regular hard drives.

When purchasing a computer, the little info card will usually say whether the hard drive is an SSD. If it doesn’t say, find out or assume it’s not an SSD.

SSD’s are much more expensive than regular hard drives. But they are a technology that is much better than and will replace them soon. So I would opt for a 128GB SSD over a 500GB regular hard drive if the price point isn’t that much higher.

If having an SSD is too expensive, look for hybrid drives. They combine both technologies together for a more affordable drive.

For SSD size, 128GB is usually enough. But now that 256GB is getting more affordable, gauge how much storage space you’ll take up and consider storing large files like movies and such on flash drives or external hard drives.

If you’re sticking with regular hard drives, get your money’s worth and get no less than 250GB of space. Even 1TB is becoming super cheap these days.

 

DVD Drive

Doesn’t really matter if you have one, you can always buy an external DVD drive for around $30.

 

Ports

Make sure you have an HDMI or mini HDMI port (or a Lightning port for Mac). This lets you connect to many of the projector screens or external monitors on campus.

You don’t really need an Ethernet port if you have a wireless card in your laptop. You definitely don’t need VGA, as that’s being phased out.

This isn’t really that important to consider, as they sell a lot of adapters for the ports your laptop doesn’t come with.

 

Video Card

Unless you’re going to be using your laptop for heavy gaming, then you don’t really need to worry about which video card your laptop comes with, most cover all of the basics. If you’re going to be using your laptop for heavy gaming, then you probably already know about video cards.

 

Operating System

For the love of beavers, do not get Windows Vista. There were a whole slew of computers that came out with Windows Vista a few years back at “affordable prices” and they were terrible. I had so many clients who wanted me to make their computers faster but they had Windows Vista so there wasn’t much I could do. Those were dark times.

Windows 8 works best on laptops that have a touch screen.

Windows 10 is really good and a nice mix of Windows 7 and 8. If you have Windows 7, 8, or 8.1, you can upgrade to Windows 10 for free.

 

Screen

Consider what screen size you’ll want. 11″ is usually the smallest that’s still comfortable to use while a screen larger than 15.6″ will probably be too large to carry around daily.

If you have Windows 8, get a touchscreen. Windows 8 is unbearable without a touchscreen. Windows 10 is better about it, but touchscreens are still nice to have.

 

Final Thoughts

Get a laptop with a good battery life. Take the listed battery life with a grain of salt and read up on online reviews to see if it holds up to what’s listed.

Get in the habit of backing up data onto the cloud and/or flash drives/external hard drives. You can schedule backups with MIT’s central backup service or other online services. I backup my data onto Microsoft OneDrive and onto an external hard drive.

Test the computer out at the store before you buy it. I’ve had laptops in my Best Buy shopping cart which had perfect specifications but, when I went to the store, found out that it actually looked ugly and felt awkward to use.

IS&T lists some recommended laptops and general guidelines for computer purchases. They’re similar to the guidelines I’ve given you above.

Some stores like Best Buy and Office Depot have lots of student deals for your laptops. I was able to get $150 back on my laptop because it had a student discount available. But I had to ask for it.

What kind of computer do you need to work with graphics

Powerful hardware is not required for general drawing.The average computer can handle photographs with ease, but more often than not, 2D graphics go hand in hand with 3D. Read more about how to choose a computer for 3D graphics and modeling here. Before choosing a PC, let’s take a look at the system requirements for programs that allow you to work with 2D graphics.

How to choose a computer for graphics

As you can see, the programs are not demanding. The most time-consuming process for a computer to process photos is applying filters. Regular drawings and vector graphics are small and easier to work with. For example, Nikon and Canon SLR cameras have 24 megapixels, which is a kind of standard.Images are obtained with a size of 6000×4000 pixels. And this is not the limit.

To apply a filter to such a giant, you need a stable processor. On a weak computer, this may take several minutes. But if you are thinking of rendering a 3D scene on a weak PC, then the process can take several days or even a week.

Now let’s define what computers should be for graphics and design 2019 release.

What processor do you need?

If you do not plan to work with 3D graphics, then an entry-level pebble, for example, Intel Core i3-8100 or Intel® Core ™ i5-8400 is suitable for you.These are four and six-core processors with a good frequency of 3.6 and 2.8 GHz. This power is more than enough for working with images.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 is often used instead of NVIDIA Quadro. How much RAM is needed

There are basically only two available chipsets: the well-deserved Intel 440GX “Marlinspike”, released back in 1998 for the first Pentium II Xeon “Drake”, and the new (for 2000, of course) Intel 840 “Carmel” with support for dual channel RDRAM. And if it is difficult to find a board on the first one, but it is possible, then the second one is a real “anobtanium” and is found mainly in branded workstations, but here we have self-assembly.

And looking back at the turn of the century, I remember that we could not understand the meaning of this strange RIMM memory at that time – it stands like a cast-iron bridge, but it seems not much faster. That would be DDR there! Here she seemed like a royal option. There was even a rumor that if you put it 32 MB, then the car will fly as if there are 128 of it!

The attentive reader will ask, what about ServerSet III? Yes, this chipset had an AGP version. Unfortunately, the AGP implementation from ServerWorks cannot be called successful – a significant part of the functionality is not supported, which also affected performance, there are problems with stability.Plus, motherboards on it are rarely comparable to those based on Intel 840.

What is available to us? After reading the forums and talking with more experienced colleagues, we display the following list:

So, part of the list is swept aside, since only 550 MHz processors on the “Tanner” core are supported, the other is rather of academic interest due to its rarity. Only the first three options remain, and Asus is the most interesting of them. And it’s not about equipment – SCSI and networking are found on other boards as well, it’s about a “user-friendly” approach to design. A convenient system of fixing processors, a plate reinforcing the board on the reverse side, a more familiar BIOS – even with the possibility of slight overclocking (!) – resembles modern top-end motherboards from this manufacturer.

Intel and Supermicro, in comparison with it, look like a harsh server hardware, although in principle they are not inferior in functionality. At the same time, they have proven reliability on their side, in the minuses there are significantly more meager settings, especially from Intel. It makes little sense to go deeper into the comparison, to this day these boards are very rare – one or two sentences can be found in Russia per year. This is the case when you do not choose the board, but the board chooses you.

Now I will tell you in more detail what the strict requirements for the dimensions of the board are connected with.According to my idea, the car should fit into a fairly compact case – the InWin H500 desktop. This is my favorite classic design in the “brick” style for a long time. Of course, he has a chic alternative in the form of a Q500 bigtauer in the same style, but on the desktop side, the compactness and charm of a “sleeper” a powerful computer in a modest looking case). My “combat” workstation on a pair of E5-2670v3 was built in this style, which gave a very interesting experience of building a rather hot machine in a small body volume.

Yes, I almost forgot about the RAM. The maximum will be enough! The 440GX chipset supports up to 2 GB SDRAM and is surprisingly omnivorous – it can work with regular or registered memory, with or without ECC, supports chips with a density of up to 256 Mbit (modules up to 1 GB).

Project: Video system

Let’s go back to dreams! Almost every child wants to play on the computer. So, you need to choose the coolest gaming solution, which at the same time will not really stand out from the role of a serious workstation.The choice of game cards is wide: the outgoing champion GeForce 256; not yet on sale, but already announced GeForce 2; the former king of 3D graphics – 3Dfx Interactive; presented by the two-chip Voodoo 5 5500 and the never-released Voodoo 5 6000; the successful Radeon from the ever-catching ATi. There were other, already outgoing solutions like S3 Savage, but they have a very indirect relationship to dreams.

There are probably even more cards for workstations. But most of them are highly specialized and will not be very good at games.So far, only one series can be called truly universal – this is the Quadro from Nvidia. These cards (as they still do today) are based on gaming chips, but use different drivers optimized for professional OpenGL applications. But in games, they show a very decent result. Our choice is the original Quadro or its updated version Quadro 2 Pro (based on GeForce 2 GTS). Both cards are quite rare, so we will use the one that we can find.

But we will not dwell on this.In 2000, games using 3Dfx Interactive’s Glide API are still very popular – a legacy from the times when each manufacturer developed their own solution. And 3Dfx was one of the best solutions before OpenGL came to PCs and Microsoft’s DirectX transition was in relative maturity. There can be only one AGP slot, so you won’t be able to install one of the latest Voodoo models without giving up a more productive card.

Let’s do it differently – a pair of Voodoo 2, presented back in 1998, provides a similar, and often more, in comparison with top-end single-chip solutions of the latest generations (Voodoo 4 4500 and Voodoo 3 3500).These cards support SLI technology (which is exactly how Nvidia acquired 3Dfx assets in 2001, including intellectual property and trademarks), which allows the two accelerators to work together on rendering frames, taking turns processing odd and even lines. As a result, the video system will occupy three expansion slots – as now, in 2021! And there are still three PCI and one ISA slots available (or 2 PCI and 2 ISA – one of the “universal” slots).

In recent years, retro computing has become a popular hobby.But with the popularity, prices for hardware began to rise noticeably, especially for gaming hardware – after all, a significant part of retro fans are retro gamers. The most striking example is just the cult 3Dfx video cards of the Voodoo and Voodoo 2 series. So a pair of Voodoo 2 will be a blow to the budget today – not only miners are “heating” the prices for video cards! But given the ambitiousness of the project, this sacrifice will have to be made. Moreover, to obtain sufficient performance, one would be enough, but in this case the resolution would be limited to 800×600 pixels.When using SLI, you can get a higher resolution – 1024×768, which is much more comfortable.

Project: Disks and Inner Peripherals

In a serious car, everything must be serious! For a long time, if one sentence mentioned disks and the word “serious”, there was a third word next to it – “narration” (SCSI). Really fast and reliable discs were produced with this interface. If for IDE the limit remained 7200 rpm (revolutions per minute) and the corresponding performance, then SCSI was released at 10,000 rpm for several years, and in 2000 there were also 15,000 rpm models.Our choice is 15,000 rpm, no compromises in this matter – hard drives have long become a bottleneck, and 36 GB will be enough. There will be only one disk: RAID arrays in workstations at the turn of the century were still firmly associated with servers, and only in video processing systems did they begin to occupy their niche.

An optical drive will also match the disk: it must also use the SCSI bus. DVD is still redundant – wide distribution of discs will begin in a couple of years, but the possibility of recording is already in great demand.And the best recording devices at that time were produced by Plextor. They were the fastest and most reliable for a long time, many new technologies first appeared in them, which later became standard: protection against buffer underrun, overburn – the ability to write a little more data to the disk than is laid down by the standard. In fact, the drive was bought in advance and specially postponed for this project. This is the Plextor PX-W1210TS, an internal SCSI CD-RW drive with 12x write, 10x rewrite and 32x read.

The possibility of long-term storage of large amounts of data will also come in handy, for this we will include a streamer – a magnetic tape drive in the project. DDS-3 drives provide a reasonable price-to-capacity ratio with up to 12 GB per cartridge (up to 24 GB compressed). In 1999, the new DDS-4 standard appeared, raising the bar to 20 GB per cartridge (40 GB including compression). But drives are still very expensive – this is the lot of servers, not workstations. You can also install a ZIP drive or a magneto-optical drive, but this will probably be overkill.

Let’s dwell on the above. All this requires a good SCSI controller. The most reliable and problem-free controllers of this period were devices from Adaptec – 2940U2W (Ultra 2, up to 80 MB / sec) and 19160 (Ultra160, up to 160 MB / sec). I will choose one of the options.

It’s not fun to work without music, and it’s disgusting to play without sound. You need a sound card that is good in both disciplines. More recently, the MIDI format was extremely popular for sounding games, in which music is represented by a set of samples stored in the system memory or the memory of a sound card.

There were other similar formats for recording sampled, “tracker” music – XM, MOD, S3M. A whole subculture has developed around them, including the demoscene. We talked about this in one of the previous articles. Now the era of MP3 has come and the old formats are not so relevant. The power of processors and the space available for storing data have also increased. Therefore, we will not consider ISA cards with hardware implementation of MIDI, although AWE32 / 64 would be one of the best solutions for a Pentium Pro machine.

Surround sound and positioning effects in games are coming into fashion. In the first case, one of the best solutions is A3D from Aureal, available in cards based on Vortex / Vortex 2 chips, in the second, API EAX from Creative, which is most fully revealed in cards of the Sound Blaster Live! In general, the sound quality is comparable, but my sympathies are with Creative.

There are only two slots left, we will install a network card in PCI. Intel PRO / 100 is an excellent choice, but 3Com is creating strong competition for these cards with the 3C905B / C series.Here we will proceed simply: which of these cards will be the first to come across in the box with network accessories, we will put that one. But the ISA slot has nothing to occupy. You can, of course, find a USRobotics Courier ISA modem, but public opinion in those years was on the side of external modems connected to a COM port.
Among the internal ones, cheap PCI Win-modems have become too widespread, as a rule, they work only under the aforementioned operating system and due to the general simplification of the design, they do not fit well with old PBXs and worn out telephone lines.As long as the slot remains free. Perhaps some interesting idea will appear in the future.

“And now we will try to take off with all this” – I remember an old anecdote. Yes, such a system requires an appropriate power supply. And this is the case when even a very powerful modern block will not work. Most PSUs manufactured after 2001-2003 provide maximum current on the + 12V line, while previously the main load was on the 5V line. We need such a power source.

It is highly desirable to use a block of a good manufacturer in order to be sure of its quality even after 20 years. At the same time, a power of 300 watts will be quite enough. I had the power supply from an Intel Columbus server chassis set aside for this project, which is a great option. The maximum current on the + 5V line is as much as 40A.

Implementation: Search, Build and Debug

As I mentioned above, the project has matured for a very long time, and the trigger for its start was the Supermicro S2DGE board that appeared on the well-known bulletin board.This is the younger version of the board, it does not have additional built-in controllers, unlike the closest “relative” S2DGU, which carries a SCSI bus controller on board and shares the PCB design with S2DGE. Before that, I missed out on the MS440GX, surprised by the high price tag comparable to current mid-to-high end home solutions.

On the same day, in a cozy chat room, among a narrow circle of retro lovers, I shared my find. And then my ardor was cooled down – my colleagues from Moscow had already looked at the board and noted that it was after a major repair.It was decided to abandon the purchase and continue the search. A small miracle happened – they were short-lived. On the same evening, one of his hobby colleagues in a private message said that he was ready to part with his copy of S2DGE.

The price was similar to the previous offer, but the condition is much better. The only drawback of this proposal is that the kit does not include a “holding mechanism”, a set of rails and mounts for processors – a thing necessary to securely fix half a kilogram heavy SECC2 cartridges.However, for the first time this can be neglected, fortunately, the case is horizontal and the bending moment will not affect the slots.

A colleague immediately warned that Supermicro boards of this series do not support ACPI, since they were designed back in 1998 in accordance with the requirements of Windows NT 4.0 – the main system for workstations based on the x86 architecture. She had a hard time supporting APM, and had no idea about ACPI. Recall that this system was able to issue a command to turn off the power in systems with APM only when a patch from Hewlett-Packard was installed.

In some cases, the installation of the “NT APM / Legacy Interface Node” driver and minor manipulations with the registry help, but, as it turned out, this only works with uniprocessor systems and is not compatible with the MPS-compatible kernel. Therefore, such a funny feature will remain – upon shutdown, the famous inscription “Now the computer can be turned off” will appear.

Despite all these features, the decision was made, the board was purchased and sent to St. Petersburg. Two days’ journey, and I have it in my hands.For the test, the processor was pulled out of the IBM Netfinity 7100 server in advance, there is just a suitable Pentium III Xeon 700 MHz, with a power supply voltage of 2.8 V (there are versions with a power supply of 5 / 12V, such were used mainly in branded machines) and a cache of 1 MB. The test is successful – the board is alive, the processor, as stated, is supported. But there are nuances …

Firstly, the board swears at microcodes – Supermicro decided not to add them to the latest publicly available BIOS, the FAQ on the company’s website mentions an updated version to support processors based on the Cascades core, but it is not publicly available.Technical support cannot share it for years ago. Secondly, the frequency is determined incorrectly – 550 MHz, like in the last model on the previous core – Tanner.

I did not manage to win the first one – I need to rebuild the BIOS, but while there is no programmer in my arsenal, I will not risk it. But the second, although I also sinned on the BIOS initially, turned out to be easier. After installing the OS, it became clear that the frequency was incorrectly set – CPU-Z showed the same 550 MHz. Oh, carelessness! A colleague delicately suggested – they say, it is enough to study the instructions – and even suggested where exactly to look.The multiplier for these processors was not locked, unlike the desktop counterparts – it must be set with jumpers. After switching the multiplier from 5.5 to 7, everything fell into place – both the frequency and system performance.

After a successful test, you can order processors – although the offer is small, but the opportunity to find the desired option is present. It is mainly supported by the dismantling of old servers. It is only important to pay attention to the processor voltage and, in my case, to the supplied heatsink (it was important not to exceed the height of the case).For example, a processor with a high (above the cartridge) heatsink and proprietary IBM latches fit into the case with a margin of only a few millimeters.

In principle, there were even quite rare 900 MHz processors on sale, the last ones released already in 2001, but they do not fit into either the time frame or the budget – their price was on average 5 (!) Times higher than for the selected 700 / 2M option. It took only one day to find and make a decision, which resulted in the purchase of processors from an IBM server with standard-sized heatsinks that did not protrude beyond the cartridge.They fit perfectly, and you can continue looking for components!

Actually, at the time of the purchase of the board and, accordingly, the start of the project, some of the components were already in stock: a case, a power supply unit, a hard disk, an optical drive and a streamer. Thanks to this, the minimum version of the future dream computer was launched quite quickly – so far it has only 512 MB of memory (a couple of 128 MB bars came as a bonus with the motherboard, another 256 were found in my bins) and a SCSI controller from the Pentium Pro era – the Adaptec 2940UW model.

Immediately solved the issue with cooling. Slot2 processors are designed to use passive external airflow heatsinks. Supermicro suggests using a 40mm fan to purge the space between the processors. There is no solution for blowing off the heatsink of the second processor. My project uses a conventional case, which does not provide for the formation of air flows, as is done in specialized cases for workstations and servers. It has two seats for 80mm fans – one on the front and one on the back.In this case, the rear fan is located exactly opposite the processors. We take a fan from an IBM server with a small air duct and direct the air flow exactly to both radiators. The distribution of the stream is almost equally among the processors.

Yes, the solution is not classic – usually the air flow goes from the front wall to the back. In this case, it is worth considering this solution as a separate air intake for cooling processors. Since the machine in general is relatively cold and case fans in this assembly would simply not be required if the processors had active cooling, this option can be used.The machine has been tested for heat and stability – no problem. Unfortunately, the board does not provide for temperature control of processors; we had to change the temperature of the heatsinks manually using a tester: the highest value was 48 degrees. After installing the processor retainer, you do not need to install additional fans.

Certain adventures came out with memory. Initially, four sticks of 512 MB SDRAM each, another hobby colleague agreed to exchange 2 GB of DDR2 sticks for the same amount.Unfortunately, one of them was not stable. Most likely, the reason is its non-standard organization – a two-sided one-bank. A careful re-reading of the datasheet came to the rescue – the 440GX chipset supports register modules, including gigabyte ones. The limitation applies to the volume of the chip, not the module. As a result, a pair of 36-chip Kingston strips on 256 Mbit chips was removed from the inventory. They started working without a single problem and saved a lot of time.

With a good deal of luck, we managed to agree on the purchase of an Elsa Gloria II video card – the same hobby colleague from whom the motherboard was purchased came to the rescue.The video card with the name of the princess is based on the first version of the Quadro chip, an analogue of the GeForce 256, and carries 64 MB of SDRAM memory on board, connected to the GPU via a 128-bit bus. The second success – a mechanism for fixing the processors is about to leave from warm Sochi (he will be accompanied by spare parts for another project – the restoration of the HP NetServer LH Pro server). A SCSI controller was also found – a new, unpacked Adaptec 19160 from someone’s spare parts.

Very lucky with a sound card. Upon learning about the project, a friend who runs a second-hand hardware store presented an excellent copy of Creative SB Live! Platinum (model CT4760).This card has gold-plated rather than painted analog connectors and a black joystick port. A trifle, but it looks very stylish. A 3Com Etherlink 10/100 network card and a modem – the iconic USRobotics Courier V.Everything, also known as the “Big Black Courier”, were taken from our own stock.

Not long before the start of the project, I was lucky enough to buy three Voodoo 2 cards marked “no time to test” for a very modest amount. The most amazing thing is that two of the three cards turned out to be workable.Both are versions with 12 MB of video memory, but from different manufacturers. One is Orchid Righteous 3D II, the other is a rarer Gainward Dragon 3000. However, upon closer testing, the card from Gainward showed problems – only one TMU (texturing unit) out of two is working.

The card could not be repaired, and the search and purchase of a new one (and preferably identical to the first one) was out of budget both in time and in finance. So you have to make do with one. This will not hurt performance much, but it will limit the resolution – up to 800×600.Over time, most likely, I will still acquire and install the card, but not within the framework of this article.

Nostalgia session

Installation of the operating system and software does not cause problems. Windows 2000 already has drivers for most devices, but for a high-speed SCSI controller, you will have to prepare a driver diskette and press F6 while booting from the installation disk. After installing the system, you need to install the drivers for the video card and 3D accelerator. Optional – for a sound card, the standard driver does not allow using all its capabilities.

In addition to Windows 2000, OS / 2 Warp (you will have to use the server version of Warp Server for e-Business or eComStation / SMP), Linux (optimally Red Hat Linux 7.3 or 8.0), FreeBSD will be able to fully work. For these systems, it makes little sense to have a professional 3D map. In my opinion, the Matrox G450 Dual Head would be the best choice. Voodoo will become, if not useless, then very narrowly applicable – support for it in Linux is limited, and in OS / 2 it is absent. But in these systems, APM is normally supported – software power off will work.You could have chosen Windows NT 4.0, but being a great working system, it has very limited compatibility with games.

What can you do with this machine? Anything! The main thing, perhaps, is games. Games of those years could not boast of photographic quality and immersion depth, they had to attract the audience with interesting and unusual stories, elaboration of game mechanics. For this, many people still love them. And some games just evoke nostalgia – Quake II, which was played at every break in the computer class, or Heroes of Might and Magic, which a girl whom I met at the age of 15 taught me.Someone will find pleasure in the opportunity to recall the working tools of twenty years ago – Delphi 6, Photoshop 6.0, Premiere 5.1 and others. The main thing is to find what will give emotions to you!

I think it is not very correct to give test results – you can always assemble a car of the next generation and get even higher performance. Instead of tests, let there be a gallery of screenshots of programs and games with which I wanted to work or play then, in the fall of 2000:

  • Windows 2000 Professional – one of the most successful versions of Windows;
  • Borland Delphi 6 – the first steps in programming;
  • Netscape 6 – a window to the big internet;

Perhaps this section needs to be added. The car turned out to be interesting and, perhaps, this article will inspire someone to build a similar system. The most important thing is to understand whether you are ready to spend money and time on a car that will most likely bring you only pleasure, but is unlikely to ever pay off – you will not be able to use it as a working tool, its time has passed.

As you can see, in some places I was pretty lucky. When looking for a retro iron, the most important thing is attentiveness and patience, as well as communication with sellers. Interesting offers, especially at low prices, go away quickly. Often sellers set prices that they see in ads (and goods at these prices hang for months, and often for years), and not those at which the goods are actually sold. As a rule, you can negotiate a compromise with them.

It is rare to find all the components in your city, even a large one – get ready for the cost of postage.They are not reflected in the table, but on average they can make up from 3 to 10% of the budget. There is a large selection of components on eBay; sometimes it makes sense to order rare things there. At the same time, prices for more common hardware there can be significantly higher than on local bulletin boards.

If you do not chase the maximum specifications, but take pre-top components, you can sometimes save several times. For example, as mentioned above, 900 MHz processors cost several times more than 700 MHz, but their performance differs by about 20%.However, in this case, their choice is also due to the need to comply with the time frame.

Think, is it worth immediately assembling a “dream computer”? For the first retro computer, you can use more common components – a regular Pentium III (1000 MHz Coppermine is slightly inferior to 700 MHz Xeon, and models based on the Tualatin core with 512 KB cache can be compared with the 900 MHz model). And the need for a dual-processor system is not always there: the most popular “nostalgic” systems of the Windows 95/98 / Me line simply cannot use the second processor.

AMD today officially announced the Ryzen 5000G (Cezanne) line of APUs for the AM4 platform. Like mobile counterparts, desktop APUs are based on the x86 Zen 3 architecture and are equipped with an improved Radeon Vega graphics unit. Initially, they can be found in ready-made computers from Advanced Micro Devices partners.

Ryzen 5000G desktop APU specs have been no secret for months now, thanks to numerous leaks. Leading the new Ryzen 7 5700G series with eight Zen 3 cores, 16MB L3 cache, dual-channel DDR4-3200 controller, and eight Compute Units (CU) Vega graphics. The APU operates at 3.8 to 4.6 GHz, the iGPU operates at 2.0 GHz, and the nominal thermal pack is 65 watts.

The above AMD flagship is opposed by the Intel Core i7-10700 (8 cores / 16 threads, 2.5 / 4.9 GHz) from the Comet Lake-S family.Here the “reds” claim a tangible superiority in the performance of x86 cores and more than twofold in the case of integrated graphics.
